What type of music does your muse enjoy listening to? // @rhpsdys

Anything and everything. He may be a snob at heart, but there aren't many types of music he despises in entirety. At least one or two songs of each is bound to charm him, either with lyrics alone or melody. He has a whole collection of guilty pleasure listening.
It all hinges on the way he experiences music in general - He devours all genres with the ardour of a newly arrived extraterrestrial, buys in bulk from record stores and always tends to have a new track spinning as background noise during his downtime. All at the risk of whatever task he's performing suffering a big fat record scratch if the song turns out to be trash, of course. But he's discovered plenty of gems like that as well, so he sticks to it, since it trumps heeding anyone's suggestions.
Classical, obviously, is his bread and butter. He's partial to the more structured Baroque and mid-period Romantic era pieces, as well as actual Plainchant. Orthodox cathedral chants in particular, what an otherworldly genre of choral music. It does make him feel like a bad catholic, though. Would never subject himself to solo piano and violin concertos unless he's preparing for a performance. As entertainment, he likes orchestral or choral arrangements a whole lot more. Puts himself to sleep with the most unhinged requiems of the Lacrimosa variety.
There's a lot of strange, obscure and foreign music on his list too. Or genres he enjoys for the esoteric experience his synaesthesia allows him to have. Percussion-only music, hard metal and bassy jazz feel thick and powerful, a neat sensation whenever he's upset, for example. The classical guitar techniques applied to latin music, on the other hand - calming, pleasant, often warm.
But reacreationally? In terms of casual listening? Rock is his favourite. Oh man, classic rock and roll & glam secretly have a soft spot in his heart. Anything grainy, upbeat and campy with boogie-down potential gets put on a spin loop for him to bop his head to, maybe dance if no one's looking. It's his pump-up, feel-good music for whenever he needs a lift of mood. Legitimately the happiest whenever he has his funky little hair bands on, so I would honestly say he enjoys listening to rock the most.
Bonus: In a cheesy fantasy where I get to direct a fight scene for him, I'd have it play out to I Was Made For Lovin' You by Kiss. As in, him actually putting on the song and using his sonomancy to weaponize it. Just a groovy lil' interlude.

Diddy Releases The Love Album: Off The Grid

Diddy's The Love Album: Off The Grid is his first in 17 years and a necessary invention for the visibility of R&B to the masses. It's no coincidence that in 2023 the only household name in R&B is his artist Mary J. Blige who also makes an appearance on TLAOTG. Off The Grid has a sundry of players repping for the genre on the generous 23-song tracklisting. The title is explained on the opening track "Brought My Love" featuring The Dream and a sample of Herb Alpert's "Rise" when the mogul tells his partner that his sister has his phone. The plan is to escape into their love free of distractions and that intention is heard throughout the album. There is a lot of flirting, slow-dancing and lovemaking with a list of producers almost as long as the artists. Busta Rhymes, Dawn Richard and Kalenna join Diddy on the lively "Deliver Me" which gives a Dirty Money flashback while sharing an intimate conversation between lovers. J. Dilla is one of the producers of the song that should be heard on a dancefloor or in a moving car. 
Jozzy is the first artist signed to Diddy's Love Records and her profile has gone up since co-writing Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" remix and Beyonce's "Virgo's Groove." She is featured on the yearning that is  "Homecoming" which is led by the bass from disco band Ecstasy, Passion and Pain's "Born To Lose You." Diddy has another past reflection with "Stay Part 1" recalling Jodeci's classic with group member K-Ci and Compton rapper Kalan.FrFr. He shares the love he had with Kim Porter on the song named after her with vocals from Babyface and John Legend. Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy performs one of the interludes which keeps the romantic mood with operatic strings. It is hard not to feel like being encapsulated in a love bubble when Jazmine Sullivan sings "Need Somebody" with atmospheric drums and sacred organ chords in the background. The whole thing ends with H.E.R. surrendering to a  sensuous connection on "Space" with a sparse arrangement of piano and percussion. Diddy's reputation was built from his legendary contributions to hip-hop but TLAOTG's dedication to rekindling the true spirit of R&B in the mainstream proves that he really has become Brother Love. I love the way jazz tugs at our emotions in a way no other music can: it can calmly seduce your soul or prompt you to dance," states the award-winning composer and acclaimed pianist Lisa Hilton in the liner notes for her latest release, Coincidental Moment (Ruby Slippers Productions 1029), out December 1, 2023.  She continues, “The music here reflects the cool energies and history of jazz, but definitely sounds like today.”The nine original compositions and two cover tunes are laced throughout with rich blue tones augmented by modal flights all shimmering and swinging with Hilton's expressive touch on the piano. Coincidental Moment gracefully shares the spotlight with quartet mates Igmar Thomas on trumpet, Luques Curtis on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion. Royston's drum mastery is evident throughout the album, but his delightful and catchy bongo rhythms are also featured on tracks Jagged Lil' Bluesand Blue Tropics. Jazz traditionalists will enjoy the retro vibes of Happily Go Luckily and Anxiety Society with their cool grooves and snappy trumpet improvisations by Thomas. The entire quartet shines on the evocative Spanish-tinged Enigmatic Adventure and infuse Everyday Anthem with a stirring gospel energy. The Lil Chris-directed video is a tribute to Eddie Murphy's 1988 comedy Coming to America, with Bronson playing every character Murphy played throughout the film. Two days later, it premiered on Bronson's YouTube page as part of the 2015 YouTube Music Awards. He released a one-minute long " teaser" for the video on his YouTube page on March 21. On March 9, 2015, Bronson stated via his Twitter account that a music video for the song is in the works. Wonderful." Jordan Sargent of Pitchfork Media criticized Bronson's whiny vocals and Ronson's production throughout the song but gave praise to Chance's quirk-filled verse, saying that "he pulls off in half a minute what Bronson couldn’t in fifteen: using an imagined story to reveal humanity through humor." Music video Colin Fitzgerald of PopMatters put the track alongside "Easy Rider" as 'album highlights', saying that without them "the album's second half would seriously hinder the overall value of Mr. Pat Levy of Consequence of Sound praised Bronson's singing over the piano-heavy production but singled out Chance's verse as the song stealer for his "laundry list of things he hopes will happen to the girl who romantically maligned him." Okay here’s everything I can remember hopefully further viewings can fill in some gaps:
So they opened doors early and there were just a few of us in the lobby with Jaime still walking around taking pics of all her decorations half in costume
Curt got there from a class and he came to talk to us and was really excited about the show and telling us how much we were gonna love it
And Jaime was still wandering around and she came over and was like you’re here early so she took us over to show us the christmas tree and said you can be in charge of making sure everyone knows about this decorate your own ornament station and I cannot overstate how excited and proud she was of her decor and it looked so good and she’s so fucking sweet (and it brought me back to my very first irl starkid interaction being her talking to a group of us at avpw right after getting off her flight she really is an angel🥺) and then she said she had go eat dinner but her hand was hovering by my shoulder as she was saying it and I was like oh no will she won’t she and then she DID and I was like OKAY BREATHE oh my god I love her
Angela from shitty broadway was there to play piano in the lobby and she was so nice (everyone’s so nice lol) we did the whole ‘where have you come from’ so she got very excited about me coming from London and then she was taking group pics of us
Amy was on merch and she was so nice SK customer service is really :)
Then Corey had to run around handing out wristbands to confirm our vaccine status for those of us that got there early before they were actually giving them out and thank god he did because some people had to go back to get them when they got to the point of seating us and then I wouldn’t have been so close but also two second interactions with Corey are scarier than conversations with anyone else lmao (I mean except J&L but I didn’t talk to them)
And no surprise Bob and Denise were there but I didn’t need them to be in my eyeline, as I said I could barely manage to look at them because the show was a damn spectacle but the couple moments I did see they looked so damn proud of their kids also no surprise
But yeah my seats were SO GOOD and I couldn’t believe I was seeing them all in person again and having them be that close like it’s so surreal. And they also made such good use of the space it was really cool
As I said AJ KILLED the preshow oh my god. And they got Britney to do a fun filmed thing even though they asked her to do it during company tech week lmao she’s such a good sport
Also like I’ve said it and starkid and curt have said it but truly the ENERGY in the room, we were so excited, THEY were so excited, genuinely eeeeverything was getting cheers. And it’s always so special to be in a room full of starkid fans like that’s home brb crying 😭

Clark is phenomenal and he wrote the best show and his costume? So good
Dylan’s just so damn good in this role
Teared up just when Joey came on I love him okay and I missed him so much, but his background acting is truly divine
Lauren’s first appearance was from the audience so my simultaneous first thoughts were “god she’s so fucking GORGEOUS” and “fuck she’s TINY” because she was barely taller than people sitting down lmao
Meredith looked so happy 🥺
JAIME queen she killed her choreo lmao
And I’m not getting over Lauren and Brian as siblings and Lauren and Brian hug we won 😭
Janaya was INCREEEDIBLE oh my god
CHRISTMAS ELECTRICITY JAMES HE’S SO GOOD AND THE CHOREO AHHHHH AND HIS LIGHT UP SHOES and EVERYONE’S costumes looked so good excellent work June and we got a lil James Lauren and Jamie dance trio ugh it was so good
But then the cratchit interlude 😭 It was very fun to have new little bits of content to the show but this one just made me want to sob already, Lauren walking up with the kids (wearing the fucking boots I just can’t escape them) and then Joey did fully carry Brian on and wonders why he has back problems lmao
And then he held his hand out for her to join him when he started the song and this is me just being overemotional about them lol but it did feel really symbolic for their first live performance as a public couple 😭😭 And I did have a moment of ‘oh my god *everyone* knows they’re together now’ and you could feel how special it was and ugh crying forever
And he spun her which honestly when I was picturing the performance I was like god that would be so cute if he did and then HE DID but it made me think about their first dance so I didn’t need that because god they’re just so soft and sweet and the heart eyes 😭
AND THEN they did an almost kiss and got cut off by tiny tim which thankfully I was forewarned about because I would have died they live to torture us but ALSO that’s when Lo’s wig almost came off (because she has to tilt her head so far back to kiss him because she’s so tiny byeee😭) so that alleviated the feeling of wanting to die a little bit 😂
But the hand on her stomach literally just holding it for a few seconds Joey let me BREATHE
Oh the “honey” did come back 😒
And the high note 😭😭😭
I just literally will never get over how fucking incredible priceless was and how much it feels like this is just what they’re *meant* for like they’re so in their element and they’re so in love 😭😭
Okay remember in final ghost how brian and mere played those spouses yeah it was brian and AJ lol
But J&L were holding hands in their part kill me 😭😭 They made me cry again fuck them
Also Jamie’s costume was GORGEOUS
And okay christmas day DYLAN’S RED SEQUIN JACKET THAT WAS A SURPRISE YES JUNE
And god Ali turkey boy I love you so much
I think this was where AJ was over enthusiastic in his exit and slammed right into Lo as she came on so she got giggly
And the bit where scrooge gives bob a raise Joey and Dylan hugged and it was so cute oh my god 😭
Then curtain calls I love curtain calls but this one felt so special like Joey and Lauren’s faces and Brian and Mere’s hug and everyone being so damn happy to have done a live show again
God the show literally left me breathless and no one wanted to leave at the end lmao
Also I don’t remember specifics but there were little changes in the way some of the lines were sung and ugh so good it made me wish they were doing like a live album
Anyway that’s it for now but I can’t believe I get to do it all again four more times 😭

Thank you Lil Nas X for breaking the gay agenda every day and not only living your truest life through how you present yourself but through your music as well. In his 2021 album MONTERO, Lil Nas X served us with tracks that are not only personal to him but can be relatable to many queer people of color, and I am grateful for that. Through all the hate and pain he was able to give us an album that showed who he truly is and that he was okay with who he is and I think we need more artists today spreading that message. Though some tracks sound similar they each individually have their own personal vibe, with some also having greater meanings than others.
MONTERO(Call Me By Your Name):

With it being the first track on the song, Call Me By Your Name reels us in with its seductive chimes. Not only does the music sound amazing and throws it back to ancient Egypt but Lil Nas soothes us with his muffled, but understandable, voice.

Off the bat, I knew this song was going to hit different on a personal level since the title is named what it is lol, but overall this song gave what needed to be given. With its message behind individuals wanting you in their life when they were not in yours, Lil Nas gives a brutally honest backstory on the life of pop stars such as him and how people will only want something from you when you are doing good in life.
INDUSTRY BABY:

The sweet trumpets as the opener of the track grab your attention automatically and make you so excited for what is in store for the rest of the song. With its marching band/ hip hop swag, Industry Baby is hands down one of the best songs to vibe out to or get hype to during a car ride with friends or even to get pumped during a good workout. And don’t get me started on Jack Harlow’s feature on this track. Respectfully, Jack ate that shit up and you can’t but help but love his verse on the track.

I’m still trying to get the vibe of the song because at first I didn’t really care for it and I still kinda don’t but the message that we all just someone to love us was a message a rocked with. My favorite aspect of the song was definitely him singing the chorus and pouring out his emotion in it.

Only being 24 seconds long, I really couldn’t tell the message behind this interlude, I guess if you want to call it that, but I feel like there is a hidden message somewhere.

Another song that I kinda didn’t understand the message behind but I think the beat in the song is absolutely fire. Featuring the amazing queen Doja Cat, this track could have been better if her verse was longer for it was way too short.

Nas switches it up with a beautiful, mellow track still delivering his rapping skills. What definitely carried the song was the amazing piano work by Elton John was phenomenal. I became so joyful when I saw him featured on the song for I knew he was going to kill it.

In my opinion, I was more excited for Megan THee Stallions featured verse on the song rather than Lil Nas rapping and as great of a job he did Megan left NO fucking crumbs because she fucking ate that shit up.

LORDYYYY, WHAT A MASTERPIECE THIS SONG WAS !! Nas gives us a backstory behind all the pain he endured growing, not only being a black male in this world but a gay black male in fact. The message of constantly feeling lonely was prominent in the song and this track is by far my favorite song by him for it being so personal and raw.

Being the longest song on the album, Nas delivers another very personal track in which he sings I believe what was either a note to someone he loved or a note to himself. I could hear the rich emotion behind his voice and I loved it.

Back to the poppy/rap vibe, I didn’t really care for this song and I probably never will but a cool touch on the song was the voice recordings of him winning awards and his song being praised by a news reporter.

With its slightly heavy metal feel, this dark and twisted track was very interesting to listen to since it felt so different from his other songs and the rest of the album.

The acoustic, soothing vibe on this was absolutely amazing and to have Miley Cyrus featured on this song was even more amazing. Her voice captivates my soul every time especially when I can hear the emotion behind her voice in a performance or song, and I sure as hell heard it in this song.

Honestly, as much as this album had its ups or also had its downs with certain songs. When it comes to music and artist I start to like I always try to find a clear message in their songs and if one is not delivered I find it hard to really ever enjoy the song again. With that being said tho I am proud of Lil Nas X for making such a raw and emotional album for not a lot of artists are doing what he is doing today. I cannot wait to see what he has in store for his fans as his music career has only begun.

      I recently discovered Salami Rose Joe Louis from their song ‘Nostalgic Montage’, and it was enough to get me curious about the rest of their discography. The style was right up my alley. Planetary scientist gone full time artist, and it’s very obvious.

     ‘Son of a Sauce!’ is Salami Rose Joe Louis’ debut album released in 2016. After listening to this album I’m left feeling wowed. I believe Salami produced the album, and I am really impressed. 45 minute, 26 track album filled with dynamics, space/galactic/psychedelic feels, interludes, mind-warps and dreamy, mysterious vocals. 
     The album fits perfectly with the blog because i have no idea how to categorize the genre of the album. It’s weird, it’s beautiful, it’s very interesting. Some lo-fi, alternative, experimental, bedroom, abstract, qualities. Why even try to describe it? The album is full of personality and fluidity. There are many songs on here I would love to listen to while tripping, on a night drive, in the woods, or honestly just in my bed completely in the dark. Or like cleaning. You will be stimulated and feeling like you’re a little alien on an adventure while listening to this. Very cool, one of my new favorite albums. 
     There were many times where I wondered if Salami was foreign because of the way she enunciated and phrased words, but upon research she’s from the Bay Area! Regardless, I love the way she sings because it adds a whole new layer of uniqueness to the tracks, and actually in many tracks the lyrics are very undistinguishable. There are a couple tracks where her vocals are not the forefront, but the production is, so her vocals will be low, quiet, and muted. Other tracks full of beautiful harmonies and clear, sweet vocals. I’m glad she chose to highlight her production in various tracks, because truly it is incredible and should be focused on. Very interesting artistic choices all throughout the album and Salami is a true artist. 
     My only note is towards the end I did get slightlyyy tired...only ever so slightly. That’s why I took off half a point. It just got a little redundant and slow especially with the piano ballads, even though it was still unique. I started to need a little more excitement. But, it picked back up around Gabush and Why Do You Care When Im Gone.

*Crawwee- the percussion immediately draws me attention, I love the sound of the gentle tapping and the clouded drums and and bass combo. so dreamy. her soft voice compliments it so well. The chorus vocals are so interesting. 
Tell Meeeee- the percussion on this song is new. this songs a little grimier but short and leads us into the next track quickly 
*Tell Meeeee Again- evolving instrumentals from the last track. lovely
*Losing Sleep over the Cretaceous- upbeat again, the time signature/timing on this is fascinating. All the sounds are slightly overwhelming at parts but in the best way. It’s just your brain trying to catch up with all that’s happening. The ending of the song is lovely. 
*Why Do You Care When Im Gone- dreamy, starry, upbeat. paints a dreamland in your mind. Absolutely adore her vocals here. Love how in her production she’s not afraid to use any sound.

My 75 Favorite Albums of 2020

Every year produces excellent music and 2020 was no exception. The exceptional thing about this year, though, is the loss of livelihood so many musicians suffered as a result of the pandemic. To better celebrate all I’ve listened to and loved this year, I’ve expanded my albums list from 50 to 75 albums and included a highlight track from each in the Spotify playlist below. 10. Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red: Carti’s long-awaited opus has only been out for a week, which is probably not a long enough time to give an album as sprawling and surprising as this one a full critical evaluation. But I do know when I’m hearing something that’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard: this album rearranges hip-hop at the molecular level. 
Whole Lotta Red is overstuffed with invention, the glitchy, expansive production giving Carti ample opportunity to glom onto the contours of the beat and experiment with his voice. That voice is the album’s main attraction: it squeaks, it squeals, it roars, it spits, it shudders, and organizes itself into irresistibly ignorant mantras (my current favorite is “Lamborghini parked outside, it’s purple like lean”). 
Across its 24 tracks (which feels like too many, sure, but only the 5-minute long Kid Cudi-infected droner “Metamorphosis” overstays its welcome), Carti plays with listener expectations, annihilating rap songwriting conventions (why do you need verse-chorus structure if every line is a hook) as he defiantly proclaims his desire to be unlike anybody else. Though it bears some resemblance in sound and subject matter to Future’s Monster (and much of the production owes a debt to the work of Lil Uzi Vert’s favored Working Of Dying collective), Whole Lotta Red firmly establishes Carti as a totemic figure connecting mainstream and underground sounds.
9. BbyMutha - Muthaland: BbyMutha is a natural born spitter, armed with a drawly stutter-stepping flow that routinely annihilates unconventional instrumentals. She glows with supreme confidence and comfort in her own skin, especially when she’s dripping with disdain with those who’d dare refuse her the respect she deserves. A 25-track opus that earns every minute of its runtime, Muthaland is an engrossing immersion into Mutha’s world, balancing a fascination with the occult (“Sorry I don’t fuck with n****s who don’t fuck with Satan”) with grounding interjections from close friends and her four children. Boasting rockstar fantasies like “Heavy Metal,” bad girl anthems like “Nice Guy,” and dancefloor-ready jams like “Cocaine Catwalk,” Muthaland is a tour-de-force by one of rap’s singular voices, and if she’s really finished with music as she’s claimed (rappers never really retire, but Mutha has indicated she wants to focus full time on her Apothecary), the game will greatly miss her incisive punchlines and crudely empowering perspective.
8. Westerman - Your Hero Is Not Dead: In 2020, Mid-’80s sophistipop grew into one of my favorite comfort foods. Westerman’s Your Hero Is Not Dead struck me directly in the sophistipop sweet spot, evoking the attention-to-detail and synth-heavy craftsmanship of that era and pairing it with harmonic complexity and a piercing emotionalism that recalls his idol Neil Young. On songs like “Blue Comanche” and “The Line,” Westerman constructs tales as twisty as his melodies, economically exploring how people relate to each other at the beginning and end of romantic relationships. Westerman complements his tasteful palette of synth sounds with intricate and lyrical guitar playing, most notably on the sighing, gorgeous instrumental “Float Over,” which softly segues into the title track to end the album on a gently-rising high note.
7. WizKid - Made In Lagos: The focal point of the sub-Saharan Afrobeats renaissance, Lagos is having one of the most exciting musical moments of any city since Kingston in the early ‘70s. WizKid is one of the scene’s biggest stars, with an ability to combine the sonic tapestry of his hometown with Caribbean-influenced beats and vocal styles. Made In Lagos is a masterwork of sound design, bringing creamy bass, chicken-scratch speckles of guitar, tasteful interjections of saxophone and brass, and an intoxicating mix of acoustic and electronic percussion, all offered in service to an immaculate vibe that matches the album cover’s shiny, monochromatic color scheme. Made with lockdown in mind, the album eschews uptempo dancefloor workouts in favor of stress-relief and romance. WizKid plays the perfect host, tamping down his melodic flights of fancy and embracing a song-serving smoothness. He’s a warm and inviting presence throughout, laying out the red carpet for a cross-continental cast of collaborators like H.E.R., Skepta, Burna Boy, and Damian Marley. The result is a truly global pop masterpiece, capable of brightening even the dourest day of a miserable year.
6. Ka - Descendants of Cain: Firefighter by day and rapper/producer by night, Ka is a master of allusion. He organizes his thoughts into themed collections of metaphor, illustrating the bleak realities of street life with gnomic symbolism. On Descendants Of Cain, Ka’s strongest work to date, the enigmatic rapper expresses himself through a litany of biblical references, drawing parallels between ancient parables (he goes far deeper than the Cain/’caine double entendre that rappers have been using for decades) and the stark code of morality with which he lives his life. The 48-year-old hermit produced the project himself, creating an immersive sonic realm, crafting expansive, noir-ish backing tracks populated by late-night saxophones, sparkling pianos, and the occasional shot of sweeping strings. Once again, Ka’s music comes almost entirely without drums (certainly without “beats” in the traditional hip-hop sense–every once in a while, he adds an open hi-hat or a subdued shaker), the artist preferring to let his music swirl around his half-whispered words of wisdom. The album ends on a tearful, sentimental note with “I Love (Mimi, Moms, Kev),” in which the artist ditches the biblical lyrical conceit and expresses his love for his wife, his mom, and his best friend atop light percussion and a warm soul sample.
5. SAULT - Untitled (Rise): Rise is the second part of a diptych that SAULT recorded in response to the movement that exploded in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Black Is, the first part, is a great album (you’ll find it in the lower reaches of my 2020 list), but the mysterious UK collective fulfilled their immense potential with Rise, a propulsive, powerful, and danceable album that doubles as a thought-provoking examination of the nature of freedom and liberation. The album tackles weighty topics–police violence, fake-woke “allies,” protest, cultural appropriation–but handles them with an inspiring effervescence and a propulsion meant to usher right-thinking people into the streets. The music itself is an intoxicating marvel, combining elements from every trendy musical movement from the early ‘80s (post-disco, post-punk, house, hip-hop, whatever the hell ESG was) into a percussive and surprisingly cohesive cocktail. The album immediately makes its greatness known with its first four songs, one of the strongest opening runs of any album in recent memory: the swaggering, funky, keep-your-head-up anthem “Strong,” which features a drum solo from SAULT architect Inflo, the soaring, club-ready vamp “Fearless,” concept-establishing, string-heavy interlude “Rise,” and especially “I Just Want to Dance,” the best song ESG never wrote. 
4. Fiona Apple - Fetch The Bolt Cutters: Fetch The Bolt Cutters arrived with the kind of universal acclaim that can make some people suspicious. The Pitchfork review got a lot of attention, not just for its perfect score but for its bold statement that “no music has ever sounded quite like it.” 
That statement might’ve been slightly hyperbolic. Fetch The Bolt Cutters has the kind of propulsive left-hand piano figures, chest-thumping percussion, and impassioned vocal performances that we haven’t heard since...the last Fiona Apple album. But the album deserves its experimental reputation. These songs mess around with song structure and melody in ways that resemble avant-garde singers like Meredith Monk, use overlapping vocals that occasionally evoke the works of post-modern composers like Luciano Berio, and echoing modernist composers like Edgard Varese in the way she wrings pathos out of rhythmic elements.
Though Fetch might be a slight step down from The Idler Wheel, it’s an invigorating listen, packed with the soul-baring confessionals that only Fiona is capable of executing. Combining literary wordplay with plainspoken directness, Fiona forces the listener to confront her trauma and contemplate her diagnoses of patriarchal ills. The songs are uniformly excellent–especially opener “I Want You To Love Me,” the most “traditional” song on the record, and “Shameika,” a burrowing childhood rumination with a happy ending–but Fetch The Bolt Cutters stands out to me as a collection of amazing moments: when the jig-like “For Her” fades into an unforgettably painful cadence (“Good mornin’, good mornin’/You raped me in the same bed your daughter was born in”), Fiona’s ground-shaking vocal intensity at the end of “Newspaper,” her dogs howling over the outro of “Fetch The Bolt Cutters,” the winking repetition of the title phrase on “Ladies.” Her albums display more than enough ambition to forgive the long gestation periods, but hopefully we won’t have to wait another 8 years for Fiona to bare her soul once again.
3. Drakeo The Ruler - Thank You For Using GTL: Embroiled in a Kafkaesque legal saga that shines a light on the worst aspects of our horrendous justice system, Drakeo The Ruler spent more than three years wrongly incarcerated for a crime he not only did not commit, but for which he was acquitted (for more info on Drakeo’s ordeal, read Jeff Weiss). He’s now mercifully a free man, mostly due to the work of his lawyer, but at least partially because of publicity generated by Thank You For Using GTL. Recorded over the phone from prison during the height of the pandemic, it’s a miracle that an album created under such sub-optimal conditions sounds as excellent as it does, but credit producer JoogSzn–who not only supplied the creeping, head-nodding backing tracks but recorded Drakeo’s phoned-in vocals–and engineer MixedByNavin for the project’s astonishing fidelity. Drakeo and Joog spent hours on the phone to record the album, in the process paying thousands of dollars to GTL, the predatory telecom company of choice for the L.A. corrections system, whose mechanical interjections serve as a constant reminder of the injustice that made the album necessary. Of course, a good story is a good story, but that alone doesn’t get an album on 2020’s most prestigious Best Albums list (mine). It’s a classic rap album, perhaps the best ever released by an incarcerated rapper, and a thumb directly in the nose of the D.A. and the LAPD. The album is a lyrical marvel, packed with winding wordplay and outlandish flexes, as Mr. Mosley takes aim at 6ix9ine, cackles at sorry-ass Instagram haters, and sneers at American-made cars (“To be honest, a Hellcat isn’t a foreign”). Each song has a carefully considered concept, the rapper’s punchlines building upon one another to make an airtight case for his status as L.A.’s top dog. He contrasts his own whip-crashing lifestyle with flashy wannabes on “GTA VI” and “Backflip or Sumn,” mourns a favorite department store on “RIP Barneys,” and proves he still doesn’t rap beef on “Maestro’s Tension.” The album’s masterstroke comes with “Fictional,” the final track, in which Drakeo exposes the prosecution’s use of his lyrics as evidence in criminal proceedings as the farce it is: “It might sound real, but it’s fictional/I love that my imagination gets to you.” Drakeo’s story was a rare bright spot in 2020, and a rare one with a happy ending. Just last week, the rapper released Because Y’All Asked, a studio-recorded version of Thank You For Using GTL, giving the album’s songs the clarity they deserve. But I think I’ll mostly return to the original, which will live on as an excellent album and a vital document of post-George Floyd America.
2. Pa Salieu - Send Them to Coventry: Hailing from the middle of nowhere–or, more accurately city in the English Midlands only known in the states for its middling Premier League team–Gambian-British artist Pa Salieu served up the most distinctive, visceral, and daring rap debut of the year. His style fuses elements of grime, drill, afro-trap, dancehall, and the darker edges of U.S. hip-hop into a percussive slurry, injected with the urgency of his struggle to survive. The magic of the album comes from the way Pa’s fluid flows interact with the shimmering and foreboding production (Felix Joseph and Aod lead the cast of the project’s sound architects), which is perfectly suited for cold city nights. He slips effortlessly into the pocket, toe-tagging the beats with a combination of aggression and trance-like meditation and uttering casually powerful pronouncements (“I'd make a killa riddim offa any riddim/The grind can never stop 'til I'm wrapped in linen”) that make you believe he’s Britain’s next great rapper. Pa keeps the vibe consistent throughout, but the moments that stand out are the moments when he locks into an unbreakable groove over no-frills production, like on singles “Block Boy,” “Betty,” and “B***K.” The artist’s wry sense of humor and brash confidence keeps the album from feeling bleak, but Send Them To Coventry wisely ends on “Energy,” a warm and bright ode to keeping your creative spark safe from the prying forces of fame and fortune.
1. Kassa Overall - I Think I’m Good: “I think I’m good”–a phrase that’s ran through my head throughout this shitstorm of a year. Sure, I postponed a wedding, cancelled trips, and saw my friends and family much less often than I would like, but I count myself among the lucky ones. Still breathing, still sane. Though it was recorded and released before the pandemic started, Kassa Overall’s I Think I’m Good became a lodestar of sorts for me. It’s a brilliantly introspective and deeply personal album about existing in enclosed spaces–whether a jail cell, an NYC subway car, or the inescapable prison of your own body.
Kassa Overall made his name as a jazz drummer, touring with icons like Geri Allen, but his solo music incorporates elements of hip-hop, classical, and trap to create a wholly original milieu. The album features contributions from over 30 accomplished voices, ranging from luminary Vijay Iyer, to Kassa’s saxophonist brother Carlos Overall, to virtuosic pianist Sullivan Fortner, to venerated activist Angela Davis. But all the disparate elements come together in service of Kassa’s deeply personal and engrossing vision.
Taking partial inspiration from Kassa’s struggle with manic depression, the music fluctuates between meditative calm and unbearable tension, mimicking the patter of an unquiet mind. Album opener “Visible Walls,” is a mesmerizing prayer for salvation soundtracked by fluttering harps, piercing woodwinds, and heartbeat percussion. “Find Me” buries a plea for help within a cacophony of sampled voices and rattling piano notes. Fortner’s piano guides us through the hauntingly devastating “Halfway House” and the Chopin-indebted “Darkness In Mind,” each highlighting a different stage of grief (despair and acceptance, respectively). The arc of I Think I’m Good concludes with the hopeful “Got Me A Plan” and “Was She Happy (For Geri Allen),” a Vijay Iyer-assisted tribute to his late friend and mentor. 
It’s ironic that an album that so deeply explores the feeling of isolation vibrates with such a collaborative spirit. I Think I’m Good feels like an answered prayer–a community coming together to check on a beloved friend who’s gone through a tough time: “You good, man?” “I think so.”

"It feels so good and so unexpected. When I recorded it, I had high hopes but they never went up this high."
"I guess that's on me for having such low expectations," I said shaking my head.
"Could you tell me the meaning of the song? Give a little insight."
"Black Jack is about gambling with your life and all the decisions you want to make with so little time. Everything we do feels like we're playing a game of chance and I think my song with its fast-paced beat really gives you that feeling."
"Any inspirations?"
"You'd be surprised to hear this but I had such a huge mixture of music growing up."  "Like from Lauryn Hill to Bjork, I was everywhere and I think that really shows in the songs that I make. I like to be versatile.”
The energy in the room shifted slightly and I braced what was he was going to say.
"So recently you've taken pictures with New York rapper, Pardison Fontaine." Tommy gave me a look and I sat up straighter, paying attention. Nervousness started to run through me because anything I say could be critical to my career.
Junior was a lot like other radio people, messy as hell because that's what people like to hear. They're interested in you but they're more interested in the drama that surrounds you because it creates traction.
My manager, Shanice couldn't come but she prepped me the night before telling me what to do. 
"Yeah, we took them at Meg's birthday party! It was so much fun." I said nodding my head at the memory. " I took pictures with a bunch of other people too."

Released a mere 13 months after the bland and tiresome Changes, the Canadian singer delivers yet another set of mawkish love ballads and Top 40-baiting pop to remind us all once again that he really, really, truly, madly, deeply loves his wife Hailey Baldwin and of his commitment to God.
On ‘Deserve You,’ he admits: ‘When I'm in my thoughts sometimes/It's hard to believe I'm the person you think I am/The person that you tell me you love.’ He’s even ‘off my face in love with you,’ replacing one vice for another as he finds himself stoned after one touch of Mrs Bieber. On the skittering, soaring ‘Ghost,’ he vows: ‘If I can't be close to you/I'll settle for the ghost of you.’
Bieber also pledges to die for her, to walk through fire ‘even if your kiss would kill me,’ on ‘Somebody,’ be the shoulder for her to cry on, and even calls he ‘the only good thing I’ve ever done’ on ‘Anyone’ as they dance under a sky full of diamonds.
‘Love You Different,’ however, leaves nothing to the imagination: ‘Under covers ain’t no rubbers/ On this planet I’ll treat you like a mother/ Let’s make babies.’
If it was just a couple of love songs dedicated to his wife, it’d be fine, but one after the other, at this level of co-dependency and self-loathing from a now 27-year-old Bieber, is just suffocating and kind of frightening. Then again, Homer did say complete and utter dependence is a ‘wonderous, marvellous thing’...
The breezy ‘Peaches,’ meanwhile (ft. Daniel Caesar and Giveon) is carefully tailored to be a potential Song of the Summer, this time praising Georgia-grown produce and California weed alongside his wife. It’s like a more grown-up version of that ‘you gotta keep your head up, oh-woah’ song, with just a dash of Maroon 5’s ‘Sunday Morning.’
Then there’s previous single ‘Holy’ (ft. fellow wife-lover, Chance the Rapper), a sweeping gospel pop ode sampling, of all things, Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love with You,’ that sees Bieber ‘runnin' to the altar like a track star.’ But this goofy eagerness for The Lord is outmatched by some even goofier lines from Chance, like this one: ‘Life is short with a temper like Joe Pesci.’ As both an Italian and a music lover, I just can’t abide. Then again, Chance really doesn’t like criticism, so that probably explains its first draft-like quality....
Look, I have no problem with religion or spirituality of any kind (Except for Hillsong, ‘cos fuck Hillsong, fuck Morrison and fuck prosperity gospel). I don’t even consider myself an atheist. It can help provide guidance and comfort in troubling times, as it’s done for Bieber. It’s also quite ironic that I post this review on Good Friday... But like a lot of born-again types, he must espouse his religious beliefs at every single turn, in the most preachy and insufferable way possible; there's just no in between.
Justice also sees Bieber attempt to restyle himself as some sort of humanitarian – by sampling the powerful words of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
But rather than use them to speak out against racial injustice or police brutality, they’re merely used to prop up Bieber’s overwrought declarations of love on piano ballad ‘2 Much’ and on an interlude halfway through the album... which is immediately followed by ‘Die For You’ (ft. Dominic Fike), dedicated yet again to Hailey.
Although he admits that ‘I know that I cannot simply solve injustice by making music, but I do know that if we all do our part by using our gifts to serve this planet, and each other, that we are that much closer to being united,’ Bieber’s social conscience rings hollow, nothing but a gross, vapid, self-indulgent attempt to capture the cultural zeitgeist. It's corporate brand wokeness; the bare minimum when it typically comes to celebrity activism. Or maybe this is some weird way of atoning for the awfulness of ‘Yummy’ and trying to game the Spotify algorithm. That he didn’t anticipate such backlash in the first place is also pretty galling.
Even the album’s title is perplexing: What justice is Bieber fighting for, exactly? The right to bone Hailey Baldwin? The right to dedicate soppy ballads to her?
But, like Changes, there are a few diamonds in the rough.
The hazy, drum-powered atmospherics of ‘Deserve You’ could’ve easily sat alongside Purpose’s biggest hits, like a softer, slower take on Jason Derulo’s ‘Cheyenne.’ ‘Unstable’ (ft. The Kid LAROI) is sparse and ghostly with those ‘Another Day in Paradise’-like vibes.
‘Die For You’s intensity is matched by punchy 80s synths. ‘Somebody’ (produced by Skrillex) is also urgent and feverish, given some extra grit with some power pop riffs and murky percussion, while the glitchy ‘Love You Different’ (ft. BEAM) is as bold and vibrant as ‘Sorry,’ combining garage-inspired beats with dancehall swagger.
If Bieber had just stripped away all the cheesy ballads and stuck with the 80s synthpop, he probably could’ve turned Justice into his very own After Hours (not nearly as good, mind you, but still better than... this).
Justice is not nearly as profound as Justin Bieber thinks it is, his latest album once again let down by cheesy, uninspired lyrics and a lack of focus as he relies on a grab bag of styles: early MTV-style New Wave, tropical pop, RnB, pop rock. Although the acoustic ballads are, thankfully, kept to a minimum and the production is just as slick, with much stronger collaborators for the singer to bounce off (Then again, just about anyone is an improvement on fuckin’ Lil Dicky...)
Like Changes, it’s also about five or six tracks too long. Hell, there’s no less than four deluxe editions of Justice: The Target Exclusive, The Walmart Exclusive, The Alternate Version (featuring one extra track), and The Triple Chucks Deluxe. It’s so fuckin’ shameless, but what do you expect from the guy who released ‘Yummy’?
His quest for TikTok notoriety blew up in his face. His attempt to ‘continue the conversation of what justice looks like’ is hollow and plain tone-deaf. His syrupy, obsessive odes to his wife have more than grown thin at this point. If he doesn’t gain some self-awareness soon, then It’s hard to know just where Bieber goes from here...
