A darker theory that just hit me: SPOILERS

What if Eclipse was lying about the bomb? He always planned to just kill Lunar for the hell of it? What if he sets it off anyway?

So Eclipse uses the Star to kill KC, which devastates Moon because the choice was taken away from both of them. But, once Monty gets to Lunar, Eclipse sets off the bomb on Lunar, intending to kill them both to get rid of them both at once. But Monty manages to be just far enough away he doesn’t die.

Monty has to tell Sun and Moon that Lunar died, not knowing Eclipse killed KC, which makes them resent Monty for 1) leaving Lunar completely alone and thus allowing Eclipse access to kill their baby brother and 2) giving Eclipse the Star, which killed KC.

Monty truly looses everything, Lunar, the Star, his only two friends, another potential friend. Which leads him to drinking and processing his grief in that bar when Foxy shows up.
