ooh I didn’t know that! I started doing some more digging and I think I worked out where my confusion comes from: Cloud in the beginning of TFA says “How many years? Four since meteor. Six since the Lab. Ten since Nibelheim. Ten years of mistakes and failures and struggles!” I took that to mean he was ten years in the past, but nowhere does it say that explicitly (at least that I could find with a quick ctrl+f). He only counts back ten years to Nibelheim, but he’s actually about twelve years in the past. 

Meteor happened at the beginning of ‘08, meaning Cloud was 21 at the time (he was born in August of 1986 and would turn 22 in August of ‘08). If we go with TFA’s “four years since Meteor” line, plus the Sinnatious comment that Cloud landed prior to August, that means Cloud started out in late May/early June of 2012, and fell twelve years back to 2000. 

(It has to be late May/early June of ‘00, since Genesis gets the shoulder wound that kicks off his degradation sometime in the summer of ‘00, and - in CC - deserts in October ‘00. So it works if we take “summer” to mean “early June”, Cloud encounters Genesis very shortly after that - late June or very early July - and goes to Nibelheim in late July / early August, just prior to his younger self’s birthday. This lines up with the TFA chapter note that says Cloud has been in the past for about two months when he goes to Nibelheim.)

So four years since Meteor puts Cloud at 25 going on 26 at the beginning of TFA. If Cloud only jumped ten years into the past, he would have landed in ‘02, two years after Genesis’s desertion, when Sephiroth & co were around 21-22, and bitty!Cloud was fifteen going on sixteen. So he had to have gone twelve years back to land in ‘00, when Genesis (would have) deserted. (This still doesn’t quite line up with bitty!Cloud being only twelve, since he should have been thirteen going on fourteen in ‘00, but two years off is a lot easier to handwave, especially given the wibbliness of FFVII’s canon timeline and character ages.) 

Anyway, this isn’t to knock Sinnatious or say they made mistakes or anything! It’s just me getting a bug up my nose about ages because 1) honestly I spent way too much time trying to work out when in the timeline TFA happens so I could be as accurate as possible when writing my crazy fic-of-a-fic, and 2) when I actually started to dig into FFVII characters’ ages and the canon timeline, it got real weird real fast and then I had to keep going. Did you know that according to the timelines, Sephiroth was a decorated war hero in 1992? When he was twelve? TWELVE?!?! No wonder the guy isn’t the most mentally stable or socially capable guy on the Planet. O.O

“Write for yourself” and other well-meaning(?) but misinterpreted advice

Because I don't know when to shut up I'm posting this comment from AO3 and my response to it. Hi person who wrote it and follows me on Tumblr! Instead of sending me anon messages about this, you should probably just unfollow me now! 

I’m bolding the parts that I think are relevant to all writers and not just about my specific story. (Which you can find here with this link since I am obviously a person who will do anything for readers including, you know, write a story and want people to read it.)

 Wait, did you write this fic just because you felt like people reacted well to one thing from Breakable? I know writing's hard, but it sounds like you're not enjoying it, which makes sense if you're not writing it for yourself but for other people, and only looking for comments/kudos/hits. I say this because I saw your post on tumblr about how you just posted a new chapter and it wasn't getting any feedback. Why not write a story for you? For, you know, fun?

My reply:

  Okay, wow. First of all, I do write fic for an audience, after spending many years trying to write original stuff and failing to finish anything. The only way I can motivate myself to finish is if I know people are waiting for it. "Write for yourself" is common advice, but not the whole story. Yes, write the thing you yourself would want to read. But why would I write a whole story for myself? A ficlet of 500 words takes a few hours. A chapter takes minimum a week, probably 2 or more. A whole novel-length fic takes a year or more. Why would I spend all that time writing if it was just for me, when I could just tell myself the story *in my head* without having to do the work of writing it down and editing and polishing it, which is normally about 8 stages of editing for me? Why would I do that for myself only? That's not "fun." Writing has some fun moments, when I'm in the groove and the perfect phrase comes out, but overall it's not a fun hobby. It's not even a hobby, most of the time. It's a compulsion and when I'm in periods of my life where I'm not writing, I feel less complete, even if everything else in my life is going well.

Anyway, you are mistaken about the genesis of this particular story. The very first thing I wanted to write when I found Sherlock fic was Breakable, because I really wanted a hurt/comfort story where John was the one injured, to see how Sherlock would react, and I wanted the injury to be permanent, because I didn't see that often and I thought it more realistic than being cured by the end of every story, like most that I read. I read a lot of stories where one character was blind or deaf, but not many with mobility issues, so I settled on the set-up of Breakable, with John being permanently paralyzed and Sherlock blaming himself and the two of them taking 120K words to get to a good place together again. And I loved that story, and I still do. I love the characters and even though I don't think they are too different from canon John and Sherlock, they still hold a very special and unique spot in my heart. So I really, really like it when other people read this series and enjoy it. I get to share my love for the characters and universe with other people. "Write for yourself"--nope. I write to share my love.

So after I finished writing this story that I love, I didn't think I'd ever write a sequel, because I couldn't imagine what it would be about. I knew I wasn't going to write a fic where John gets cured, and I didn't think I had anything else to say that would be enough for a longer fic.  I wrote some ficlets with the characters, and that was fun (for the sense of fun as described above—I like the end product, the process is pretty terrible). Then I had an idea about Moriarty. I'd meant to mention him in Breakable, but he never made it in. My idea was that he had died as in canon, and Sherlock had nightmares where he was taunting him about having broken John. But it just never fit into the story as I wrote it. But a couple years after I was done with Breakable, I had another idea. If John and Sherlock were together from the beginning as they were in this universe, then most likely Reichenbach never happened. Maybe Mycroft kept Moriarty locked up when he first had him in for questioning, instead of letting him go like he does on the show. But if Moriarty learned Sherlock married John, what would he do? Flip out and escape from prison so he could torment them, obviously. So there was the idea for this fic.                                                                

BUT. It wasn't enough. This is where your mistaken assumption comes in. When I wrote Breakable, I put all the stuff with Sherlock's mental health in it without thinking about it too much—it just seemed to be what the story required. But readers really reacted to it, which made me realize it was an important aspect that lots of people (myself included) could relate to. So now, 2 years later, I saw a solution. The plot with Moriarty was fine, but it wasn't very much like Breakable, in that what I enjoyed about the original was the internal plot—how John and Sherlock's relationship both changed and didn't change, and how we saw Sherlock's internal thoughts and emotions. But the stuff with Moriarty was external, and writing that would have a completely different feel and tone from Breakable. I love the feel of Breakable, and I'm not much interested in external plot or cases in general. But with not wanting to pursue anything further with John's injury, and Sherlock and John settled pretty firmly in their relationship by the end, I didn't know how to recreate that feeling, which was, to me, essential if I wanted to write a long sequel. Sherlock's mental health offered me a way to keep that feeling and tone. I knew about the study on dementia and anticholinergics, which had come out while I was writing Breakable. I thought Sherlock would definitely have strong opinions on it, given that he is taking one of the drugs in the study. So there was my plot—external incidents with Moriarty, plus an internal side for Sherlock in regard to his mental health. (Of course in the 2+ years I have been working on this, a lot more stuff has also made its way into the fic.) But I certainly didn't think, "Hey, I'm going to write this story about this because people will want to read about this one specific thing and so I will have an audience." Yes, I want an audience. Yes, I go through the cumbersome process of writing and editing and posting so other people can read it. But the story itself is the one I want to tell. If I wanted to write something designed to pull in readers, I'd be writing fic about how Mary was evil and the baby was fake and John never really hit Sherlock and everyone is soft and smol and no one ever does anything wrong. I write what I want to read. And then I offer it to others, and hope they like it, too.

And telling a writer to stop writing a story is more than a bit not good, even if you think you are doing them a favor. It's much like telling them they wrote a chapter wrong and out of character, which is not a very good thing to do. Would I stop writing something because of poor reader response? Probably not, because I know some people are enjoying it and don't want to let them down. But there are many, many abandoned fics where a writer stopped because of a hurtful comment, which is what triggered my complaining in the first place. I think you are not the same person who made that comment, but I can't say for sure since you posted your comment anonymously. But I suggest if you don't enjoy reading this because you think it's somehow lessened by being a product written for an audience, you stop reading it and maybe don't follow me on Tumblr anymore. I'm not a person telling myself stories as I fall asleep at night. I'm a fic writer posting my fic to share it with the world.

A Reckless Touch

A sigh. “Genesis.”

“I said no, Sephiroth!” Genesis turned to him, glaring at him with red-rimmed glowing eyes. Sephiroth felt his heart clench in his chest at the sight, forcing himself to swallow past the thickness in his throat and continue.

“Cloud’s worried about you.” He said softly, stepping towards the other only for Genesis to take several steps to his one and increasing the distance between them.

“He shouldn’t be.” Genesis grit out, eyes narrowing as he curled in on himself, hands fisting in his sleep shirt. “He shouldn’t give a damn about me right now.”

“Rosso’s freaking out,” Sephiroth tried, knowing the other had a soft spot for their girlfriend.

Genesis’ response was not want he expected.

“She should be.”

Sephiroth stopped, frozen by the anger and certainty in Genesis’ voice. “What?” The single word reflected just how taken aback he was to the other’s declaration, coloured with disbelief and confusion.

“Rosso should be the one out here in the middle of the night,” Genesis explained, turning away from Sephiroth and tightening around himself. Magic and tension was practically leaking from his frame, staining the air around him with power and anger. “She should be the one freaking out while I comfort Cloud!”

“Genesis,” Sephiroth said, trailing off when he realised he didn’t know what to say to his lover in that moment.

“We’ve been so prepared for Rosso to mess up, you know we have!” Genesis shot at him, anger an inferno. “So ready for her to slip up and hurt Cloud without meaning to! So ready to comfort her, tell her she’s still figuring it out and how Cloud wouldn’t hold it against her!”

Sephiroth was left to stare at the other man as he moved, pacing as if the energy in him wouldn’t be expelled any other way. They had been prepared for Rosso to slip up, it was only inevitable given how little time she’d had to learn how to curb her strength as to not hurt an unenhanced person. And Rosso had been prepared too, doing whatever she could to minimise the risks to their ‘normal’ partner; keeping her distance and rarely initiating contact with him despite the fact they all knew she wanted the casual intimacies both Sephiroth and Genesis could share with the slim blond.

They… hadn’t been prepared for Genesis to hurt Cloud.

It had been a nightmare, a bad one. Sephiroth didn’t know exactly what had happened, just that between one moment and the next Cloud was crying out and cradling his shattered arm to his chest while Genesis stared in shock. The shock had only lasted a moment before he fled, leaving Sephiroth to deal with their distraught partners.

He’d left Cloud in Rosso’s care once he healed his arm, letting them draw comfort from each other while he sought out Genesis and attempted to bring him back to the apartment. He hadn’t worried at all at leaving them together, they were twined together in a way that was comfortable for Cloud’s still aching arm (he’d take him in for a check-up in the morning just to make sure it had healed right) and Rosso hadn’t seemed likely to move anytime soon.

That just left him with Genesis.

“Cloud won’t hold it against you either,” he finally said, soft voice cutting through Genesis’ unheard tirade and getting a scoff for his efforts.

“He should,” Genesis snarled, turning to glare at him again. “I know how to control myself. Him getting hurt because of me should have been impossible!”

“It was a nightmare,” Sephiroth said, soft and calming, trying to make Genesis see reason. “You weren’t in control of yourself, you didn’t know it was him.”

“How can he trust me not to hurt him then?!” Genesis shouted, quickly crossing the distance between them and staring up at Sephiroth coldly. “What if I do something worse next time?!”

“You won’t,” Sephiroth said, sure and confident. He knew Genesis wouldn’t allow himself to hurt Cloud again, even by accident.

“You don’t know that!”

Sephiroth swallowed as tears gathered in the other’s eyes again, hands reaching out to pull the other against his chest. Genesis crumbled against him, folding against him with a harsh noise.

They would remain like that until Genesis calmed enough to return to the apartment and the two Sephiroth had left to comfort each other.

10. Bill Cipher (Gravity Falls) First of all on this list is this asshole, gosh I have no idea why but there was a period of time where I absolutely loved Gravity Falls and I shipped with a human form with Dipper mostly because of the amazing art and some pretty complex fics written for the ship. It was a wild ride and honestly thinking about this phase of my life always makes me feel weird, like I liked him purely because I liked reading shippy fics starring him. 

9. Pearl (Steven Universe) This one is kinda weird too? Idk man I absolutely love Pearl’s design and the way her character is written. I’m not in loop with the SU fandom because ugh it’s not a happy place to be but I absolutely love browsing art of her. I love how she’s such a broken character for a kids show! I used to read SU meta and they’d go on and on about how she’s a shit character, an asshole towards Amethyst and toxic. But tbh, I feel like she’s just a complex character that made bad choices at times, she’s trying to get better, she’s trying to cope with the loss of Rose someone she probably loved in more ways than one and how she felt Rose chose Greg over her, and now she’s gone. I mean, she just can’t let go and I think that’s very human.

8. Pitch Black (Rise of the Guardians) Alright but this fandom was the first one I’d ever been in once I started out in tumblr. It was very cool and leaves bittersweet memories tbh, I absolutely adored the art and fics this fandom churned out, I used to ship Pitch and Jack Frost. The thing about Pitch is the fact that the fandom practically merged the movie with the lore from the original Guardians of Childhood the movie is based on. In the book, Pitch has such a tragic backstory, his name was Kozmotis Pitchinier and he was the best general of the Golden Army. After capturing all fearlings, he was designated to guard the prison of their imprisonment , he was haunted by their whispers and pleading and his only solace was his daughter, of whom he kept a photograph of in a locket. But one day, sensing his weakness, the prisoners imitated her voice and hypnotized Kozmotis to believe she was being held inside with them. Frantic, he opened the doors to release her, but was instead possessed by ten thousand Fearlings.

Sorry for the long summary but I just want people to know more abt his backstory haha.

7. Loki (MCU) I didn’t really know about Loki until I watched Thor: The Dark World in the cinema and I was instantly in love despite this movie being the absolutely worst of all the MCU movies, which looking back I’d have to agree. Loki is yet another tragic character whom I’m sure everyone already knows about. I think Loki is a vulnerable character who tries to be good, wants to be good but he just can’t, or he tries and other people just won’t accept him. He’s a frost giant and those people are considered monsters, how can he not be bitter that he’s the very thing ha’s been indoctrinated to hate and fear. He is a very complex character that the MCU practically does not do enough justice mostly because he’s portrayed as a villain in the movies. But I wouldn’t consider him a villain, more like an antihero, nobody trusts him and he doesn’t think anybody can love him either. I’ve only read a bit of his comics and I gotta say Loki deserves so much more than what he gets.

6. Dr Strange (MCU) (I’m breaking the one character per fandom rule idc) I know a shit ton of people absolutely HATE Dr Strange, and for a variety of reasons too. They hate him because Benedict Cumberbatch plays him and hating on BC is practically the new edgy on tumblr. People think Dr Strange should have been played by an american asian and all that yada plus the ancient one being whitewashed. While I agree some aspects of Dr Strange is problematic, I think people need to give it more credit, at least watch it for the cool effects that the stupidly huge amount of people worked on. Also as an asian, I can guarantee you most people outside of America doesn’t give two shits about these controversies and movies should be a source of pleasure instead of thinking about all the negative shit only. Dr Strange deserves so much more, he’s an interesting and while he does share some qualities with Tony Stark, he’s his own character with his own issues. Plus his comics are very fun to read, come on, magic in the Marvel is such an awesome concept. Fuck you haters, I just wanna have a good time with the magic man.

5. Sherlcok Holmes (BBC Sherlock) This is also one of my earliest fandoms on tumblr. Sherlock season 4 absolutely ruined it with all the queer baiting and the shitty plot. But Sherlock had always left bittersweet memories for me too. Mostly because of the absolutely amazing and complex fics written for it, I will never understand how fic authors do it but Sherlock fics were amazing and I would gladly choose these fics over canon any time. 

4. Asuka Langley Soryuu (Neon Genesis Evangelion) I have so many feelings about this bitch right here, honestly one of the most relate-able characters for me. Asuka is a very human character, she’s very proud and has emotional issues. She was considered the best of the best and was trained to be an Eva pilot since she was four because she’s a child genius. However she has a tragic backstory, her mother underwent some tests and became insane, believing that Asuka's doll was her daughter and refusing to acknowledge the real Asuka, referring to her as "that girl over there." She eventually commits suicide by hanging herself; Asuka found her body when she went to tell her the good news that she had been chosen to become an Eva pilot. She couldn’t let go that Shinji the main character was starting to become a better pilot than her despite training for months only. She suppresses a lot of her emotions and had unhealthy ways of coping. I just want her to be happy.

3. Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood) Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is what I would consider the holy grail of anime tbh. Edward is just about the most selfless person out there in the fictional world of anime. I love the fact that Ed and Al started their journey off with mildly selfish reasons that is to return their body parts whom they lost to in a deal with Truth to bring back their mom which ultimately failed. In the end, Edward is willing to lose his alchemy, the very things that defines him, that started this whole mess, that is the source of his joy and misery for the sake of gaining his brother’s body back instead of selfishly using the Philosopher’s stone that’s made using human souls. I just want this shorty to be happy and I’m glad he is with that satisfying end.

2. Hitsugaya Toshiro (Bleach) The reason this guy is ranked so high in my list is mostly because, he’s been there for me since I was a smol kid, I’ve had a crush on him ever since I was 10 and I could never let go. He’s the one fictional character whom I still fallback to every time things stagnant, I love reading fics about him, he’s just so cool! He’s a child genius with a sword that can shoot ice dragons. Plus he’s always written in such a complex way in fics, Kubo missed his fucking chance by not expanding more about his character in the manga, but clearly Kubo is incompetent when it comes to plot so whatever I guess.

1. Kylo Ren (Star Wars) The Star Wars fandom or specifically the Kylux subfandom is probably the happiest plave I’ve ever been in since forever. It’s the first time I’ve ever talked to anyone at all online, I only lurked around in other fandoms but Star Wars made me able to brave the fandom and talk to people in it, I’ve met so many amazing people and read amazing fics in it, it’s mostly due to the KRB discord chat that I’m still going strong with this fandom. I absolutely love Kylo Ren and can he please crush me between his thighs. The thing that attracted me to him besides his unconventionally attractive appearance is his emotional vulnerability. Kylo has been neglected by Leia and Han as a kid and sent away to jedi school with Luke, he’s been manipulated by Snoke as a kid and Leia and Han just don’t think they can take care of him properly, they’re afraid of him and always too busy with their work, Kylo wasn’t planned, the way their relationship worked just wasn’t ideal for child rearing, Kylo was left alone with Luke, unable to understand why his parents don’t want him anymore, how he was too emotional for the jedi way. While what Kylo did was not justifiable with all that murdering, it’s not a stretch to say that he was very mush a victim of circumstances too. I related to Kylo a lot as I’d been sort of neglected as a child too, both my parents were always busy with work and I only saw them during mealtimes and before bed.

Mage of Blood: one who learns and experiences bonds, blood, relationships, family(, etc), and [learns and experiences] with/through them.

Heir of Time: one who manipulates progression, rhythm, continuity(, etc), is protected by them, and Becomes them.

Witch of Hope: one who controls and manipulates potential, belief, optimism(, etc), and [controls and manipulates] with/through them.

Knight of Space: one who protects space, matter, creativity(, etc), and exploits such to protect themselves and others.

Seer of Life: one who knows growth, wealth, food(, etc), and with/through them.

Passive vs Active: 2/3

Overlapping Aspects: None

Overlapping Classes: None

So, first off: you have your Space and Time players, which is good! First step to success is checked off. Your Time player is an Heir, so they shouldn’t have too many issues managing the timelines.

As for your Space player…Well, it kind of ties into a couple other things as well. First of all, your Space player is a Knight; that means that your session has a toxic lack of Space, which will make breeding the Genesis Frog very difficult, as there will likely be a dearth of frogs to breed.

To compound that issue, you have a Witch of Hope and a Mage of Blood. So you’re going to have some massive change that the Witch has to enact within Hope in order to assure success of the session, and some kind of disaster within Blood that the Mage will need to avert. For the sake of emphasis, let me expand:

You have some massive change within potential, belief, optimism, hope(, etc) that has to be enacted for your session to be successful, and a disaster within blood, relationships, bonds, family(, etc) that has to be averted somehow for your session to be successful.

When you combine that with your toxic lack of Space, and overall probable difficulties with breeding the Genesis Frog, you have some major problems within your session–it’s entirely possible that you won’t be able to win and will have to Scratch.

That isn’t to say it’s not possible for you to win–but it’s likely that the shenanigans necessary to do so will be Epic.

To aid in guiding the session, you do have the Seer of Life, however! They will be able to guide your players towards the futures that involve the most Life, and in tandem with the Heir may be able to aid in the Epic Shenanigans that will likely be necessary for your session to be successful.

You have all my good wishes, friend. I think you’re going to need them.

Roles! So, for friendleader, I think your Mage of Blood or Witch of Hope is most likely to end up stepping up in the beginning, but your Seer of Life should probably take it over as those two…really need to focus on what they need to be doing, and not on leading the other players.

On frontlines you’ll end up having your Witch, Knight, and Heir, likely with the Witch and Heir swapping off between frontlines and support as needed.

On support you’ll probably end up with your Seer running strategy and tactical in tandem with the Mage, the Mage also running sabotage with the Witch and Heir.

And now for the tips section! (which I suppose has become an excuse for me to be sassy. I’m so sorry…)

Someone always manages to screw this up in some sessions, but I’ll say it nonetheless–Don’t. Trust. Jack. Noir. He will show you his stabs.

Your Space player is such a tired smol. Let the Heir help them, and let them rest!!

Together your Mage and Witch have all the right tools to become unwitting masterminds of their session–please keep an eye on them, so they do what they need to do! Instead of messing with their co-players’ heads.

Your Seer is probably the only person with the energy to be the Only Sane Person.

You all!! Have such tight relationships together!! Doesn’t it get a little claustrophobic sometimes, though?

Your Heir probably gets so caught up in what comes next that they mess up with everyone a lot. Let the Mage give them a smack sometimes, get them back to the now.
