In the last couple days, I’ve had a few people in the tumblr writing community follow me, so I figure it might be worth talking about my publishing experience a little. I’ve been a pretty well known fic author, professional ghost writer, had a literary agent for two years, and ended up self-publishing.

I spent my entire life belittling self publishing (a learned behavior, but that’s a separate issue), and was determined to traditionally publish books. In 2021, I really thought I had it. I sent out my first YA novel manuscript, received eleven manuscript requests, and signed with an agent. I couldn’t tell you if this was the dumbest decision or best decision I ever made, because it did end up getting my published — just not the way I expected.

That period of two years did some of the most harm to my creative joy I’ve ever experienced. I’ve always found joy and excitement in writing, and in sharing it. The person I worked with in the industry was never excited by anything I wrote, even though they were the one who wanted me signed. Some of the things that bothered me are typical of the trad pub industry, like wanting me to shoehorn a blackmail plot into my book to artificially raise stakes. Others bothered me far more — I was asked to take out or tone down serious topics, such as drug use. I didn’t like that, but I did it. Other instances still I have come to realize are not reflective of professionalism in the publishing industry, but happened to me, when I got ghosted time and time again by my own agent.

Eventually, it came to a head. I don’t even remember which manuscript I tried to show them that they criticized, but I finally asked if they even liked my writing, and suggested we part ways. They agreed.

Shortly thereafter, I decided fuck it, I’m gonna publish this book I know they would have hated because it’s 100% character based. My first book, Train Track Princes, is my most successful book.

Bonus: I got to make all of the art! One of my little paranoias about trad pub was that I’d have to have somebody pick all the visuals for my book and it would look like garbage. Now if it looks like garbage, it’s because I made it that way, not somebody else. I don’t think it looks like garbage, though.

Train Track Princes will turn two years old on January 1, 2025. I release all my books on the characters’ birthdays. It’s a silly little thing, and I’m glad that I get to do it. (The newest one, Only Slightly Dead, comes out 2/26/25).

Earlier this week, days before I got laid off, one of my students found out I wrote books. I showed him where I put my books in our our library, which one is most popular (Train Track Princes), which one is printed in an intentionally dyslexic friendly font because the protagonist is dyslexic (Common Strange Behavior), and which one addresses recovery from drug and alcohol use (This Dissonant Princess, sequel to TTP). I tell him that Only Slightly Dead is about grief. I tell him that when my agent read it, he told me that not all the characters could be gay.

(Agent also said they found the “romance” between the two adult characters more compelling than anything between the main characters, despite this exchange in the second chapter:

My student asked me why I worked at our school if I wrote books. I explained to him that publishing, both traditional and self publishing, is not necessarily lucrative. I also told him that even if I did make a shit ton of money from my books (I make a little), that I’d still work where I did. It was never about making money.

“What’s it about, then?” he asked.

“Making sure at least one person feels less alone. I did that.”

Now it’s about making as many people feel as seen as I can, really. People who have survived attempts on their lives, people with EDs, people with broken families, people struggling with addiction, people who don’t do well in school, people whose finest qualities cannot be measured by a test or a paper or a letter, people who are TOO MUCH, people experiencing grief, people living with HIV. You get me. I know all of these people in real life and I am some of these people.

My personal experience with trad pub is not a blanket experience, but you will be asked to alter what you wrote, sometimes for better, and sometimes for worse. I decided that, in my case, it was for worse. My stories are their finest at their most feral.

Now I write queer books about fucked up protagonists getting to save the day or finding their happy ending. I get to publish their stories on their birthdays. I get to illustrate them inside and out. I had no idea this was exactly what I wanted.

This week, while my students frantically wrote and revised sci-fi short stories, I said to them: don’t question it. Be feral. Keep going. Be feral.

Design and good design examples

Trying to explain design would be quiet complicated. This is due to the fact that design have been implemented in so many aspects of our life that is not possible to equally give a single definition of it.

But what makes up to a good design?

There is many factors that can influence and make a design good, this is due to the fact that ‘’Good design’’ does not end with creating something that looks good but expands and should give ability to perform, converts, impress and be able to fulfill it’s purpose. Based on (Anders Toxboe) the good design is not something that can be just measured in one perspective but in many different ones.

To give some idea of what a good design can represent we gathered 5 ‘’Good design’’  examples :

1. Google maps app for mobile phones and tablets.

Most people would wonder what is so special within the app and just take it as something given. But if we look from modern day perspective we see how greatly the towns are expanding, number of people, places, traffic and distance to travel increase. Most people wouldn’t be able to just get in they're car or bus and just go from Point A to point B as many times we know only where we are at the moment but we don’t know how to get to our final destination in a time sensitive manner. Google maps provide exactly this perspective, it allow us to search for the shorter and faster direct route to our destination and constantly updates us on the traffic and delays on the way, both visually and with voice feature so not to distract you looking at the screen while driving. 3. Aquarium sink, fish tank within a sink

This design example might not be for the pocket of the average consumer due to it’s approximate price of 4000£ but would defenetly leave a good impression to the viewer. From a design perspective this is really good because is quiet memorable and impressive among the people that would come across it. It can make for a good point of starting conversation if for example a guest staying in a hotel had the possibility to use a room with such extras, it will firstly make they're stay more memorable and for sure they would be excited to tell to they're friends about it so they to visit it as well.

4. Grocery store without staff by Amazon.

This one is quiet unique and have launched at the beginning of this year in Seattle by Amazon (BBC NEWS). Amazon opened the first store that doesn’t have staff or cashiers or even self service check out stations. This is quiet impressive mood and have gathered the attention of many people already, but what it makes it unique in design perspective to be included in our list, this is the functionality and ease to use provided to the consumers. Every one have come across waiting to pay for they're product, but not any more within this shop you can just come scan your shop app and walk around the isles and pick anything you want and just walk away. The shop uses numerous cameras and sensors to distinguish what you pick and what you left behind after that, so you only pay for what it takes. This is really innovative design witch we think is future driven towards more efficiency in the service sector.

5. Underwater hotels

There are few hotels that are build under water already and all vary in they're shape and size. According to (BBC NEWS) and looking in general at the concept of underwater hotel and it’s design we can say that is quiet impressive. But what it makes it so impressive? The location in witch such hotels are designed. It attract people because the only thing separating you from the sea is the glass coupling around, this provides a great area to observe the sea and it’s creatures and astonishing view before going to bed or waking up.

Our “Digital Transparency in the Public Realm” project brought people around the world together to co-create a visual language to demystify the tech in cities.

Digital technology is all around us, but often invisible. Consider: on any one urban excursion (your commute, perhaps), you could encounter CCTVs, traffic cameras, transit card readers, bike lane counters, Wi-Fi access points, occupancy sensors that open doors — potentially all on the same block.

Many of these new innovations are exciting. After all, they can make public spaces more comfortable, responsive, and efficient. But there’s little transparency about what data these technologies are collecting, by whom, and for what purposes. Signage that does appear in the public realm often contains either small snippets, which give no indication of how to follow up or ask more questions, or multiple paragraphs of dense text.

That’s a problem. Consider the digital technologies we experience online. Research has shown that few users read long, jargon-filled privacy and data collection policies, leaving users to consent to digital technologies without a full understanding of their implications or trade-offs — and unable to provide feedback or ask questions.

A movement toward digital transparency can help by providing easy-to-understand language that clearly explains data and privacy implications of digital technologies. Digital transparency can empower users to meaningfully engage in what is fast-becoming a critical conversation of our time. And, equally important, transparency can nudge both users and data collectors towards best practices.

As digital technologies become increasingly embedded into our physical spaces, we can bring digital transparency to the public realm — an opportunity that has been identified as critical by academics, cities, and civic groups around the world.

But how do we start? Cities like Boston and London have already taken important first steps by posting clear signage whenever they employ digital technologies in the public realm. Similarly, regulatory entities in both the E.U. and the U.S. have called for the development of icons to communicate key terms and concepts around online privacy in a clear and digestible manner.

That would certainly help. Design languages already help generate understanding around complex issues every day. Nutrition labels help demystify the content of the foods we consume; Creative Commons logos quickly convey the key elements of their copyright licenses; and universal symbols help us effectively navigate through transportation hubs anywhere in the world....

Further Research - Guy Farrow ‘Ocean Portraits’

Farrow shot these range of portraits with the intention to help raise awareness of the plastic pollution in today’s ocean. I gathered from research that the creative behind this imagery challenges the ‘standard’ environmental photographs of plastic floating in the sea. They explain ‘by violating a model with plastic cutlery stuck up the subject’s nostrils, it is hoped this will help audiences better their understanding of wrongdoing’.This particular shot was featured in December 2017 issue of the Daily Mail accompanied by the tagline ‘If it were you, would you care more?’I believe that the research that I have taken from this shoot will enhance my images in the progression of this module in a positive and more informative manner. I believe it has given me more understanding into the issue and it is interesting to explore visually when the roles are reversed.

A synopsis for my research topic

From the images I have gathered on Pinterest, there are two angles I think could be an interesting scope to research on. From looking at traditional Japanese tattoos, I have decided to narrow it down to two angles which includes the meaning behind the tattoos and how it has become a symbol of criminality within the Japanese culture. Specifically, I will be focusing my research on the Japanese mafias also known as the Yakuzas. I will be using semiotics as a methodology to create a better understanding towards the connotations behind the Yakuzas and their tattoos. My thesis would therefore be ‘the semiotics of Japanese traditional tattoo within the Yakuza culture.’

To start my research essay, I will first introduce my topic in regards to the history of Japanese traditional tattoos. I will be focusing on how the representation of the tattoos has changed from being a symbol of wealth and status to becoming a form of punishment where prisoners and slaves were forced to get tattoos [1]. This was done to segregate them within society. I will then introduce my first argument by using semiotics to decode the cultural meaning behind the variety of designs presented on the skin of the Yakuza members. Because semiotics is concerned with the idea of signs and the meaning of it, it allows me to comprehend the Japanese tattoo culture as a whole. I will be able to develop a deeper understanding of the motifs and how certain symbols and designs are used to convey the Yakuza’s personalities and beliefs. My third argument will then be about the Yakuza culture. I will be explaining how and why the Yakuza members have chosen to adopt the tattoos in their everyday lives. Not only are the tattoos used as a symbol of status, the tattoos acts like a ritual to becoming an official gang member. The tattoos also signifies their perseverance and manliness as the process of getting it done is long and painful [2]. Moving on, my third argument will be about the Yakuza daughters specifically Shoko Tendo, a daughter of a Yakuza boss. She was born into the Yakuza culture and has been abused many times throughout her early years by other gang members. Although she despises the Yakuzas, she has a body full of tattoos to represent the end of the emotional abuse given by the members.[3] I will be using semiotics to decipher her motifs and meaning behind her tattoos. My final argument will be about the difference between traditional tattoos and the modern tattoos we see today on many people in the west. I will again be using semiotics to dive more into how the west perceives Japanese tattoos as more of an art and fashion trend rather than a status symbol. I will be exploring the two cultures and how they differ in beliefs, creating different connotations within the designs of the tattoos. As a conclusion, I will be wrapping up my thesis by examining the overall culture and approach that is evident within the Yakuza members and how they have impacted the meaning of Japanese traditional tattoos. Lastly, I will be presenting images throughout my research for visual aid and evidence.

A high standard of education is fundamental for preparing children for their future. At school we’re taught about a variety of different topics and we learn through so many different experiences and events. This shapes our self-progression, self-development and the way we interact with the world. Our whole learning experience has a significant bearing on our society, which reinforces just how important education is.

The experience of learning can be a much trickier for those with learning disabilities. For this group of individuals, learning can be much more problematic, and they can require an entirely different approach. But is our education system successful at delivering that? Let’s look into the subject matter further with the article below…

SEN can impact on children’s physical ability and more

Adults and children who experience learning difficulties are extremely vulnerable and traditional teaching methods used within the education system can often prove unsuitable. Research shows that within the UK population, approximately 193,707 children of school age are affected by SEN, which can profoundly impact on their overall learning experience including behaviour, physical ability, reading and writing, concentration levels and ability to understand things.

Many question whether the UK has the right support systems in place. Findings indicate that most children with special educational needs (SEN) attend mainstream schools – which you may find surprising? Government figures suggest that less than 10% go to specialised centres.

Worryingly, many schools face cuts in the future

Approximately, 2,000 children with SEN are known to be awaiting provision and urgent education funding throughout the country, however this was not discussed in the 2018 Budget (released in October last year). You can use this useful tool to see whether schools in your area will be facing cuts in the future and whether your children will be affected.

How can teaching approaches can be adapted for those with SEN?

A lot of children with SEN require specifically adapted materials to work with in school. Below, we take a look at some of the important areas that need to be considered when spending money in mainstream schools, to ensure equal opportunities for all.

Fonts

A lot of children who suffer from dyslexia find it very difficult to digest particular typefaces both in print and on a screen. Readability will differ depending on the chosen font, but it’s recommended that you stay away from any typeface that have ticks and tails at the end of most strokes — such as Times New Roman.

This is because these types of font tend to obscure the shapes of the letters, which can be frustrating to someone who finds it difficult to read generally. The size of the ascenders and descenders are also important for many dyslexic readers, as they often rely on the visual shape of a word due to phonological awareness. If the stem of a certain letter is too short or too long, this could make their reading less precise.

Sans-serif fonts are the preferred option by many people with dyslexia. However, it must be noted that some power-players are making the move to ensure text is more accessible. Microsoft Office, for example, has set their default text as Calibri, which is a modern sans-serif typeface. Myriad Pro, designed by Adobe, is another clean aesthetic typeface that can help those with dyslexia.

However, for those with visual impairments, Tiresias can be a good option. This font is used for subtitles and signs, but there is also now a screen version (Tiresias PC) that can be ideal for any digital work.

Colour Vision Deficiency

Teachers aren’t often trained when it comes to a colour vision deficiency. Reports from Colour Blind Awareness found that there are around 400,00 colour blind pupils in British schools — 40% of which don’t know they have it. As a result, schools aren’t often equipped with the right books, learning cards and more to teach with the condition in mind.

As a lot of colour deficiencies go undetected, children develop their own coping strategies. However, this will not always work, which can become problematic. Although the natural assumption of colour vision deficiency is red/green colour blind, there are some that can’t see any colour at all.

There are many things that you should consider in the classroom when it comes to allowing all pupils to have an equal learning experience. When it comes to colour recognition, lighting is an extremely important factor. One rule to follow is the brighter the light, the easier it is to recognise colour. Following this, you should always look to sit those with colour deficiencies in natural light!

It’s also advised that teachers use strong contrasts on the board and on computer screens. When possible, try to avoid using red and green or pastel colours to highlight core teaching points, as this can again become more difficult to read.

Animation Job Advertisements

Junior Animator – King’s Cross, London N1 (on-site only)

This advertisement to me looks like generally produces motion graphics style explainer videos that aim to illustrate complex topics. 

It does seem to use mixed media in their videos such as photographic assets and textures combined with motion graphics and 2d animation. This is particularity the reason why the advertisement appealed to me, because aside from animation, I enjoy painting and working in mixed media. Though, while  at NUA, my main focus has become improving my animation and character design skills, I would like to explore mixed media further as I progress with the course.

The advertisement does encourage diversity of animation style in the applicant’s portfolio. In that sense it seems to be generally concerned with the production and working with ready made assets as opposed pre- production design process.  They  look for proficiency of experience when using in After Effects, Photoshop, Flash and TVPaint.

The application requirements include:

1+ year professional animation- I don’t have any experience working in the animation industry, besides what the university has offered.

Great communication skills.

Experience in working as part of a creative team- I do have experience of volunteering at art galleries and doing a range of manual labour jobs. These roles required to work with a team, regardless not a creative team. There are some university projects we have done up till now that required team work, but they may not be enough.

Creative thinking to produce compelling content- This is generally what we do as part of the course. Though, there would be a leap when comes creating content for specific fields such as science and technology.

Solid frame by frame animation- Something I am striving for in 2d animation, but I can’t deny there are gaps in my ability. 

Good motion graphics work- something I plan to improve on as the course progresses. 

Strong illustration skills- Besides animation I have done fine art and I do enjoy drawing. Though do need to improve when working on Illustrator.

A collaborative approach to problem solving.

Great if you also have:

Stop-frame animation experience.

Knowledge of DragonFrame and Illustrator.

Not sure if I entirely understand this job, but it looks like it’s a job for a sound studio, that does sound production and music for films.

The sort of work they seem to be interested in uses up to some extent experimental approach and mixed media to generally support their marketing. They look for work in photography, stills, VFX, motion. 3d, 360, AR, practical effects. Since, I am more of a traditional animator, I may not meet their demands. Even more so, it doesn’t seem to be a job with great focus on animation at all, or perhaps at least character animation, As much as I would enjoy mixed media and abstract art, the studio seems to be looking for an approach that differs to what I enjoy doing.

2D ANIMATOR

This is a not a permanent job, but is rather searching for people to contribute towards animating few inserts for a film that is aimed to be submitted at various film festivals. It looks like the person posting the advertisement is an independent animator. 

The film is not intended to make financial gain. The reason I’ve put it on here, is because it is something I could potentially do now for experience. I wasn’t able to find the website of the producer, Kier Black, but was able to find one of the main animator Adam Oliver, who was contributing towards the film until recently. 

Based on the producer’s description of the film:

‘Men Only is a dark, ironic comedy-drama, with a 13 minute runtime, aiming to build on the achievements of my other work.’

I am assuming the style in geared more towards adult audiences as opposed to what is in Oliver’s show reel, so I am not entirely sure what to expect from the style of animation. In any case, it may be a good opportunity to gain some experience.

For this course I was able to truly find my motivation and passion. Also the main things I learned were the importance of the planning  and assessment phases or techniques in the design process. Taking the time to understand and dissect feedback or criticism to better amplify my projects has begun to train my mind for the real world and prepare me to never settle. With designs and trends always changing, its important to be able to adapt and knowing that assessment is the key to further any designs. So for this month I decided to better my mind map and logo skills to better prepare me to enhance my advertising and copy designs for this Brand. Mind mapping is one of the best ways to capture your thoughts and bring them to life in visual form(Pinola 2013). This brainstorming technique is very effective and helps bring out a bunch of different creative ideas to which will help solve my future design projects. By enhancing my map creation skills, it read more clearer and connect terms or ideas better. You can generate ideas very quickly with this technique and are encouraged to explore different creative pathways (Pinola 2013). Taking my knowledge a step further, I then high the core goals and mission to give a better understanding of the brand, and provide a strong base to build upon for future projects.

That lead into the logo design process which is still in process. After one week of exploration these are just a bunch of quick sketch created base off the brands characteristics so far. Patrice Martin a creative director of the IDEO design team, focus on Creative Ambiguity which Martin goes on to explain how Embrace Ambiguity is a process of given yourself permission to explore tons of possible solutions or ideas. That will help me lead into more creative logo ideas for the next few days as I continue to explore different concept ideas. This is the sketch period or beginning process, so creating a diverse magnitude of concepts will benefit the final logo design.

Overall im building my skills to become a master in my field. Learning the importance of proper planning and assessment may have been the highlight of this course, but a theme thats really starting to takeover is professional on presentation. With only a few months to go, I embrace the challenge and look forwards to learning and advancing my skills.
