A couple of months ago I (hubritically) thought that, as I am not a young child, I would already have immunity to young child germs, and thus wouldn't catch the scuzz my little sister had.

I was wrong. It was the first time I had a fever in a couple of years. It was awful (I'm being a wimp, but it sucked! I was tired and my head hurt and my chest was full of mucus that I was still coughing up weeks later when I felt all better!).

COVID tests were all negative (as were my sister's). It wasn't the flu (not that bad, and it wasn't flu season yet). It was just generic elementary-age child scuzz, and it sucked.

I actually don't want to have any illness, even a mild one, thanks. And, while it may be mild for you, it could be lethal to your friend's immunosuppressed mom (my reason for getting the flu shot every year as a kid despite my allergy making it uncomfortable), or that old lady in the checkout line at Walmart, or some unlucky young stranger on the street. Do you want to be the reason they got seriously ill?

weirdest side effect of the pandemic is how many people i know who get sick and say 'but my covid tests are negative so i should be fine' like you know other illnesses. exist. right.

If you are pregnant or will be living with a newborn child for any reason, talk to a doctor about getting your TDaP re-upped. When I was pregnant the first time, they told me I had to wait til after the baby was born to be vaccinated -- they vaxed me as soon as I was out of the delivery room, basically -- but the baby's father had to go get a vax on his own.

This means I can use my child's age as a marker for when it's time to get the next vaccine, which is convenient -- two days after their 10th birthday, I had to pick up meds at a pharmacy, and just asked if they'd vax me and they did. Lots of pharmacies have it for not very much money, and trust me: you do NOT want whooping cough, and you don't want to watch a child you care about have it, either.

My grandfather wanted to be an opera singer.

But, you see, his youngest brother died of whooping cough, just a few years before the Pertussis vaccine would be developed.

So my grandfather did not become an opera singer. He always loved opera, listened to it, would sing along to his vinyl records of it, play it on the radio whenever he could. But it wasn't his profession.

No. He became a pediatrician.

It's about what kind of world he wanted to live in, you know?

Also, you need a TDaP booster (Diptheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis) every 10 years. People generally forget about it as an adult unless they have a tetanus scare, but if you are ever regularly around kids, it's important to stay up to date.

The Measles vaccine is good for life, especially if you got the full 2 doses as a kid. But DTaP/TDaP is different! Make sure you have that up to date!

Decided to ask at the grocery store pharmacy if they did Tdap boosters and the look on the pharmacist’s face was priceless

You can get a TDAP vaccine at pharmacies! You are supposed to every ten years.

I only learned that LAST YEAR.

anyway today I learned if I'm having a muscle tension dysphonia flareup and can't talk, and I get vaccinated, which is normally a trigger for my MTD when i CAN talk, the two cancel each other out and I can talk again after not being able to for six days

The website really asked me if I wanted to get my Tdap that day as well since "the cdc says you can receive up to FOUR immunizations at one time!"

Buddy I don't actually want go do flu and covid both at the same time except that I ran into Scheduling Issues, and I'm not taking any time off.

Why would I want to be miserable with THREE shots at once?

December has been a bit crazy. A handful of 14+ hour days. I just had to Google "does metal have to be rusty to give you tetanus". Family in town. All that kind of stuff.

I'm working on it, but it might be a little later than Christmas. The good thing is that it's literally written into the plot that it can be a bit late.

Two years. It's two effective years for whooping cough. The CDC website isn't updated to provide latest scientific studies, and it won't be anytime soon.
