Space Marine Chapter: The Modifiers

Description: A Fleet-based Chapter belonging to the Ark Ship “The Iron Nexus” and created from the Tech Priests. Entrusted with the most heretical task of seeking Xeno Artifacts within Xeno Temples and ruins. They are meant to find these relics and if time is of the essence modify them so that they can be utilized by the Imperium. Though they were created by the Tech Priests Legion they answer directly to the Institute. As is typical of Space Marine Chapters created from the Tech Priests, they are very smart and prioritize their own mission and the pursuit of technology over combat. Though of course that is not to say they are not good at fighting they just don’t enjoy it or see the use in it like other Space Marines. By order of the Institute they mainly hunt for Xeno technology both new and ancient that belongs to the Eldar and the Necrons as they are the most technology based.

Unique Trait: “Understanding” allows the Modifiers to understand how any technology they touch works. This unique trait lets them modify any piece of technology they get their hands on to ensure they never destroy any technology, only disassemble it to later assemble into something new. This is one of the few Space Marine Unique Traits that is not combat based at all.

Arsenal:

Mechanical Cutting Arm - Contains three saws on the side made of the strongest steel found in the Imperium to allow them to cut any material. But on the off chance it cannot cut anything there is a plasma vibration blade on the other side that can be extended and is used to cut even through impenetrable armor. Like all Mechanical arms it has its own artificial nervous system that is connected to the Biosuit of the Space Marine allowing them to control it like an actual limb. With this the plasma vibration blade can be extended and retracted whenever desired by the Modifier.

Mechanical Torch Arm - Contains a unique flammable substance that when blasted out will burn half as hot as the sun but can be blasted out at an accelerated pace to burn even hotter. Thanks to the nervous system that connects to the Space Marine’s Biosuit the Modifier is able to adjust the heat and the size of the flame produced with a simple thought. With this arm and the cutting arm there is nothing a Modifier cannot cut through.

Mechanical Pulse Arm - Possibly the most weaponized of all the Mechanical arms a Modifier has, contains two batteries filled with God Blood that charge the needles at the end of the arm. Can be used to overload Xeno tech, shock enemies or shoot lightning at them, or simply power up a device that is lacking energy.

Mechanical Multi-Tool Arm - Contains five flexible fingers that can extend into any angle and bend into different shapes. At the tips of each finger is a crystal of God Blood that can shift into different shapes thanks to the frequencies given by the nervous system of the Mechanical Arm.

Dual Automatic Bolters - No Space Marine is ever under equipped and the Modifiers are no exception. Possess two Automatica Bolters that are small and condensed versions of the Bolter gun, possibly the smallest version to date. Contains only 12 canisters of God Blood allowing 240 shots but fires much faster than a regular Bolter and even a Bolter Rifle. The AB for the Modifiers possesses Incendiary, Cryo, Explosive, Electric, and Armor Piercing frequencies for ammunition. However, by order of the Institute they were also given the Gravity Explosion, Gravity Implosion, and Void frequencies for their ammunition as an added boost of power against the Elder and Necrons they are expected to fight against.

Deity of Worship: Naturally they worship Novila as they were born from her Tech Priests. Believe it is their divine duty to find filthy Xeno tech and modify it more into the image of their god while also keeping any benefits it may have had such as power and plating armor.

Recruitment: When the Modifiers need reinforcements they go to a world where Novila is being worshiped and meet with the Churches. There the Orphans are surrendered to the Modifiers and taken to the Ark Ship where they will train as applicants. Once on the ship they will be given a simple battery made with Eldar tech. They will then be told that this is a heretic item and it must be purified, the Modifiers and Priests will observe how the children react. If the children destroy it they will fail and be sent back to the church. If they try to understand and maybe utilize it they will be observed on how they do so. If they manage to figure out it is a powersource they will be considered in the final decision. However if one of them figures out how to disassemble the battery without damaging the power core or having it blow up and kill them they will automatically be chosen.

Once chosen they will be taken to a DNA factory within the Ark Ship and placed in the rebirthing pods to become Modifiers. After they become Modifiers they will be augmented with the mechanical arms and sent to the Institute to be given their first mission.

Caution Regarding Chaos:

Khorne of Sacrifice and War - Immune, the Modifiers care not for combat only results so Khorne has no sway over them.

Tzeentch of Corrupting Knowledge and Magic - High Risk, Tzeentch knows all and sees all, a Modifier attempting to find new Xeno tech might be tempted by his words and become a willing soldier to his army.

Nurgle of Disease and Decay - Immune, Nurgle is stagnation and rot while the Modifiers want change and improvement. Nurgle has no sway over them.

Slaanesh of Pleasure and Pain - Medium Risk, due to the tech they collect sometimes belonging to the Eldar Slaanesh has one or more ways to reach the ears of the Modifiers and promise them so much more. Since Slaanesh offers pleasure through pain quite a few Modifiers can resist but there will always be those that let their curiosity get the better of them.

Malice of Anarchy and Vengeance - Immune, The Modifiers are actually often the targets of revenge rather than wanting it themselves due to their disregard to Eldar and Necron culture. Furthermore Modifiers believe in order of technology so anarchy has no sway over them.

It’s indicative of how violence and suspicion are deeply baked into the Imperium that this magos is just taking ALL of this as certainty. And that dogmatic obedience isn’t letting him even ponder how things could be different. Not even a wishful off hand comment. Betryal and murder is inevitable, there’s no recourse but to be sad.

More people need to point out that the ‘Golden Age’ Imperium was already a tyrannical, miserable, dumbed-down dystopia. Before the Horus Heresy, and before it’s emperor was put on the Golden Throne.
