Of female programming groups
I've had enough of all those ladies in code and stem girls and techsisters and this kind on exclusive groups. This is only a question of time when boys also have enough of that and make their own groups and then what now is hard, is then is impossible - to get in there. Besides, two more things:
Those women-only code groups focus more on support and experience than doing the actual work and getting better. It is necessary too, but the naming is misleading in that case - or I have different expectations than creators. The result is that women share their sad and bad experiences, but don't develop further to eliminate those kind of experiences.
Those specifically girls only groups and festivals and workshops and conferences seem to be with lower level of power than "normal" happenings. Not necessarily content-wise but the idea of speaking in women-only event seems smaller, easier, lesser, more unimportant and less of an archievement than doing the same on any "normal" event.
Maybe I've just outgrown these type of events for now?

My, My, My Michelle.
There comes a time when you go from drinking PBR to Guinness. There comes a time when you discover that food goes beyond french fries and mozzarella sticks. In the late 90s, I made these discoveries through friends and I call it my "coming of food-age". Now we have Roosevelt, Metzgar, and Saison. Then, we had Helen's, Zeus Gallery and...Bamboo.
The first time I went to Bamboo, I felt like I had gone from College Prep to my Masters. It was just a grown up place. It wasn't fancy, far from it, but I had heard the food was amazing. Here, you drank grown up, you talked about grown up things, and you ate some really good food. You felt as part of the establishment as the asses of bar flies adhered to their squeaky stools. I never felt uncomfortable there, no matter how much I was in someone's armpit. I knew when I went to Bamboo, I wouldn't have to deal with Irish Carbombs and dudes rubbing their crotches against me.
I sat at a booth with my soon to be fiancé, my best friend, and her husband. It was dark, but cozy on a nice Spring night. I had no idea what to expect, but was ready to indulge in a night of hanging out and taking in the din of the growing crowd. She walked up to the table, licked her fingers, and put the bevvy naps on the table. "What can I get for you guys?" slithered out of her lips as if to say, I don't have time for you to decide if the Bordeaux is from a good year or whether the fish is broiled or grilled. We ordered abruptly and said thank you. I was apprehensive to ask her questions about the specials, but she had a way of assessment with folks. It was like, she could feel out that we were in the "business" that we weren't going to treat her badly and we would send her off with a tip to put a smile on her face. In her lovable rasp, she commented on her night and was happy to tell us which specials were worth splurging on. Then I watched her stand at the bar, cigarette in hand, while she looked at her order pad. I was kinda in love with her whole thing.
From frequent nights and brunch's at Bamboo to eventually working for her at Cafe Rustica, Michelle Turner had become a fixture in my life that spanned almost two decades. I looked forward to seeing her and hearing how her day or morning was going because I could always guarantee a story full of spitfire and humor. She was one of my favorite waitresses in town and she was someone I would be scared to party with for fear she would drink everyone under the table, climb on a table, throw the bottle across the room and exclaim, "Children."
Michelle Turner had a personality. She was full of fire, she was funny, she was shocking, she was political, and she didn't give a rat's ass what you thought. She was a complete techsist. If she didn't have to have a cell phone she would gladly trade it in to be surrounded by the pages of books. How she loved to read. She used to get so angry with me when I started the crossword, because just like me, she hated when she went to do it and it had been started. We both had a love for art and we saw eye to eye on her want to do regular shows at Rustica. She provided an intimacy with Rustica you don't get anymore. I loved doing openings there because it was a night surrounded by friends, good food, and she was proud to give these artists exposure.
Her and Sam were my restaurant family. They took me in when I lost a lot in my life. Michelle, although often times, surely, had a kind heart. She always believed in doing the right thing, often times giving the bum a few dollars for washing the windows of the restaurant. I loved sitting with her while drinking her recommended wine while she told stories or we talked about what book she was currently reading or the latest gossip around town. There were times when this bold woman would be seen at her most vulnerable and it was always endearing when she put her arms around Sam, her husband, as he stood tall beside her, coffee in hand, a kiss to her head. Then she would respond with something snarky, but you knew it was in love. She was my Mommachelle, she took care of us when we needed it and she gave us tough love when necessary.
I will always remember the obvious things about her, the rasp, the curly hair, the cool jewelry, the wine tastings, those reading glasses she lost often. Her spirit is what will remain with me for the rest of my days. As I sit here through the tears, I can't help but laugh out loud because I just imagined her standing her and smacking me upside the head and saying, "What the f*ck is wrong with you! Get off your ass and go get a mimosa, it's Sunday for Christ's sake!" That was Michelle and I loved her dearly and I'm only sorry that I didn't get to see her again, to sit and listen to NPR while she mumbled over some issue she was having over her phone, while the beautiful flowers she brought in adorned the bar and I sip on my Tempranillo, tempted to steal her Style and start the crossword puzzle.

Mentored online coding bootcamps - what are they all about?
So you’re a Social Sciences major. You’re not a techie, you hate math and you think programmers are some kind of anti-social aliens that you have nothing in common with. But you read the news. And what they say is “tech is the literacy of the modern world”, and “if you want financial freedom, learn to code” and then there was something about a prodigy kid who learned to code on his own and got accepted to an Ivy League university at 12. You try to ignore it, because no way YOU can learn programming, but you can’t help but feel you’re missing out on something huge.
It’s true. The buzz about the tech industry is real and the demand for skilled people doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. But luckily, the odds are in your favour. We’re talking about the growing number of top-notch online developer bootcamps. They’re a great way to get acquainted with technology without having to quit your job, make long-term commitments to studying at a university or giving out huge amounts of money for courses, all before you even know if you can really get along with tech.
Our very own Tech Sisters volunteer Hanna-Mari has first-hand experience. “After graduating from the university with a degree in education - a field I didn’t want to pursue a career in - I found myself in need for some serious marketable skills. That’s when I stumbled upon Skillcrush - an online mentored program that helps you build your tech knowledge from the ground up, teaching you the basics of web design and development.
The people behind Skillcrush were concerned with the small percentage of women in the tech industry, so their primary goal was to introduce tech to women. Men are absolutely welcome to join, but the student base is mostly female and all the mentors are women too. But the best thing for me was the awesome community of students helping each other out. And of course, the mentors are always there for you too, helping you solve any problems ranging from bugs in your code to career advice. Also, Skillcrush managed to blow that stereotype of programmers as boring weirdos right over. The industry is really full of amazing innovators and out of the box thinkers who welcome newcomers with open arms.
It’s been some nine months since I enrolled in their 101 course and I can honestly say it’s the best career decision I’ve ever made. I’ve been able to take on a lot more tech-related tasks at work and it gave me the nudge to keep exploring the tech world, so at the moment I’m up to my elbows in Android development. I love it!”
How can you get started? Here’s a Course Report webinar with the alumni of all major mentored online programs out there. Check ‘em out, pick your favourite and indulge yourself in the endless possibilities of the tech world. And who knows, you might just end up liking it.

Tech Sisters new season has kicked off!
Autumn is here and so is Tech Sisters with our new and exciting plans ready to be realized. This time we have something new and something old for you to discover and we hope it inspires you as much as it has done for us!
As some of you may have already noticed, we sent out our fist newsletter and we promise there will be more coming! We’ll keep you updated with what we’re up to and what is generally trending in the tech scene right now. So if you haven’t signed up for our newsletter yet, then this is the best time to do it!
Our season’s first long awaited networking event will take place in less than 2 weeks on the 23rd of September. This time we will be hosted by one of the greatest software development company in Estonia - Nortal. More info of the speakers can be found on the event page. Those of you, who are not able to attend this time, due to a limited number of seats, keep your head high because we have another event planned already on the 20th of October in BIGBANK. Stay tuned by liking our FB page or following us on Twitter to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!
Tech Sisters’ events are not only inspirational but also practical. Meaning that there will be at least one HTML & CSS workshop coming this year and many more in the future. Also if you happen to know any enthusiastic teenagers who are interested in IT and tech, give them our Digigirls web and Facebook page address, so that they’ll have the chance to be part of something awesome and also practical. This time we will visit other Estonian counties not only Tallinn, so spread the word about the events to your friends all over Estonia.
Anyone interested in Startups should already book their calendars on the 13th until the 15th of November because that’s when we’ll have another Garage48 Pärnu Women Special event happening in Pärnu. This time the theme of the event is Tourism! So get your best ideas and friends together and make your million dollar dream into a reality!
For those of you who got really excited just by reading this post and feel they have some spare time, motivation and wish to give back to the tech community, even when you’re not in tech world yourself, we’d love to have you on-board to help us spread the word even further. If you recognized yourself, dear future volunteer, please send us your motivation letter and contact info to [email protected].
If all that above hasn’t inspired you enough, keep your eye on our Facebook page, because there are several fun and exciting events happening all the time and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we have more info ourselves!
We hope you have an inspiring autumn and that Tech Sisters’ events will have a saying in that as well! See you at the events!
