"Machines Can See 2025" wraps in Dubai after two‑day showcase of AI
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third edition of Machines Can See (MCS) Summit has concluded at Dubai’s Museum of the Future. More than 300 start‑ups pitched to investors from EQT Ventures, Balderton, Lakestar, e& capital and Mubadala, and more than 3,500 delegates from 45 countries attended the summit, while online engagement levels were high (4.7 million views). Real-time updates with the #MCS2025 hashtag are projected to exceed 5 million views.
The summit was hosted by UAE-based Polynome Group under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Strategic backers included Digital Dubai, Dubai Police, Emirates, Amazon Web Services, NVIDIA, IBM, SAP, MBZUAI among others.
“In just three years, MCS has evolved from a specialist meet‑up into a true crossroads for the world’s top minds in science, business and public policy. The week proved that when researchers, entrepreneurs and governments share one stage, we move a step closer to transparent, human‑centred AI that delivers real value for society,” said Alexander Khanin, founder & CEO of Polynome Group
Landmark agreements announced live on stage
During the two‑day programme, several high‑profile agreements were signed at the summit, including:
A trilateral Memorandum of Understanding between Astana Hub (Kazakhstan), IT‑Park Uzbekistan and Al‑Farabi Innovation Hub (UAE), creating a Central‑Asia‑to‑MENA soft‑landing platform for high‑growth start‑ups.
A Google Cloud initiative offering no‑cost “Gen‑AI Leader” learning paths and discounted certification vouchers to accelerate responsible AI adoption across the region.
Polynome Group officially launched AI Academy, an educational initiative developed in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi School of Management and supported by NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Institute. The Academy will offer short executive seminars and a specialised four‑month Mini‑MBA in AI, aimed at equipping leaders and innovators with practical AI knowledge to bridge the gap between technology research and commercial application.
Policy & talent
Day one opened with a ministerial round‑table – “Wanted: AI to Retain and Attract Talent to the Country.” Ministers Omar Sultan Al Olama (UAE), Amr Talaat (Egypt), Gobind Singh Deo (Malaysia), Zhaslan Madiyev (Kazakhstan) and Meutya Hafid (Indonesia) detailed visa‑fast‑track programmes, national GPU clouds and cross‑border sandboxes designed to reverse brain‑drain and accelerate R&D.
Breakthrough research
Prof. Michael Bronstein (University of Oxford/Google DeepMind) demonstrated Geometric Deep Learning applications that shorten drug‑discovery timelines and model subatomic physics.
Marco Tempest (NASA JPL/MagicLab.nyc) blended GPT‑4o dialogue with mixed‑reality holograms, turning the stage into an interactive mind‑map.
Prof. Michal Irani (Weizmann Institute) showed perception‑to‑cognition systems capable of reconstructing scenes from a single gaze sequence.
Andrea Vedaldi (Oxford) premiered a 3‑D generative‑AI pipeline for instant city‑scale digital twins, while Marc Pollefeys (ETH Zurich/Microsoft) demonstrated real‑time spatial mapping at sub‑10 ms latency.
Industry workshops & panels
AWS ran a hands‑on clinic – “Building Enterprise Gen‑AI Applications” – covering RAG, agentic orchestration and secure deployment. NVIDIA’s workshop unveiled its platform approach to production generative‑AI on Hopper‑class GPUs, complementing its newly announced Service Delivery Partnership with Polynome Group’s legal entity, Intelligent Machines Consultancies. Dubai Police hosted a closed‑door DFA session on predictive policing, while X and AI workshops explored social‑data pipelines on GPU clusters.
The parallel Machines Can Create forum examined AI’s role in luxury, digital art and media, with speakers from HEC Paris, The Sandbox, IBM Research and BBC, culminating in the panel “Pixels and Palettes: The Canvas of Tomorrow.”
Prof. Marc Pollefeys, Director of the Mixed Reality and AI Lab at ETH Zurich and Microsoft, highlighted the role of cutting-edge technology in daily life: “We are at a turning point where technologies like spatial AI and real-time 3D mapping are moving from laboratories into everyday life, transforming cities, workplaces, and how we interact with the digital world. The Machines Can See Summit underscores how collaboration between researchers, industry, and policymakers accelerates this transition, bringing innovative solutions closer to everyone,” he said.
Ethical & security focus
Panels “Good AI: Between Hype and Mediocrity” and “Defending Intelligence: Navigating Adversarial Machine Learning” stressed the need for continuous audits, red‑teaming and transparent supply chains. Dubai Police, TII UAE and IBM urged adoption of ISO‑aligned governance tool‑kits to safeguard public‑sector deployments.
High‑profile awards
On Day Two, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented trophies for the Global Prompt Engineering Championship, for breakthroughs in multilingual, safety-aligned LLM prompting.
Key takeaways
The summit underscored three strategic imperatives for the decade ahead. Talent aviation – backed by unified tech visas, national GPU clouds and government‑funded sandbox clusters – is emerging as the most effective antidote to AI brain‑drain. Spatial computing is moving from laboratory to street level as sub‑10‑millisecond mapping unlocks safe humanoid robotics and city‑scale augmented‑reality services. Finally, secure generative AI must couple adversarial robustness with transparent, explainable pipelines before the technology can achieve mass‑market adoption in regulated industries.

A local report confirmed that Busan, the second most populous city in South Korea, plans to use the Ethereum and Cosmos for its project “Blockchain City.” The Asian city has been developing its blockchain capabilities for a while and plans to double down on its efforts. South Korea’s Blockchain City To Operate On Ethereum And Cosmos The report claims the project is expected to be completed by 2026 as part of the Busan Digital Asset Exchange (BDAE) and Future Schedule Plan. The South Korean city has been experimenting with different implementations of blockchain technology. Busan is looking for ways to offer services, such as digital vouchers and others, and for ways businesses can operate on the blockchain. However, the experiments hit an obstacle due to the difference between the networks and “uncomfortable user experience (UX).” As crypto users know, operating on Ethereum and its many sidechains differs greatly from applications running on Cosmos, Cardano, Tezos, Solana, and other networks. These blockchains have transaction costs and speed and require tools many are unwilling to master. Therefore, Busan decided to concentrate on Ethereum and Cosmos to standardize its blockchain initiatives. Implementing this “Blockchain City” will cost around 100 billion Korean won or $74 million US dollars. The project will operate around the BDAE. Busan City’s Efforts To Contribute With Blockchain Technology According to the report, the BDAE was launched in November 2022 but is yet to roll out operations. The company will disclose its business plans in an upcoming event this November. The trading venues will provide users access to commodities, raw materials, and other assets via tokenized products. In the long term, the BDAE plans also to offer access to other assets, including tokenized global intellectual property (IP) rights. Tokenized assets and related financial products have been gaining attention from different sectors. Banks, exchanges, and financial service providers have noted the potential benefits of implementing these products. In a paper published on September 8, the US Federal Reserve (Fed) stated the following regarding the potential benefits of tokenization: the programmability of crypto tokens and the ability to leverage smart contracts, allows for additional features that can be embedded into the tokenized asset which might also benefit markets for the underlying reference assets. For example, liquidity saving mechanisms could be implemented in the settlement of the tokenized asset even if they are not implementable for its real-world counterpart.26 These attributes might lower barriers to entry for a wider set of investors, resulting in more competitive and liquid markets, and better price discovery. In addition to the “Blockchain City” and the BDAE, Busan will launch a blockchain innovation fund. The initiative will support the development of blockchain technology and related infrastructure. As of this writing, Ethereum (ETH) trades at around $1,600 and faces considerable selling pressure on short timeframes. ETH’s moving sideways with some losses on the daily chart. Is Seo Important For Your Small Business in Hong Kong Too?
Tumblr media
No matter how small or large your business is, you will always face competition. If you are in the market, planning to evolve, you need to put in a lot of effort. Whether you use traditional marketing strategies or digital ones, you need promotion. Nothing can offer that better than SEO. So, you should think about using SEO for your small business in Hong Kong.
However, if you aren’t familiar with the term, you can continue reading this article. We have discussed everything about SEO in detail. So, scroll down and help yourself understand the term and its benefits.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a marketing strategy in which websites are optimized to boost their ranking in the search engine result pages. In simple words, it helps your business to become more visible to your potential customers online. This strategy focuses on optimizing the website content as per the search engine algorithm. It depends on the qualities of your website content to let it appear in front of maximum people.
Online businesses across the world, irrespective of their sizes, use SEO to boost their online visibility. After all, it is the most cost-effective way to improve website traffic, connect with more and more people, and boost your ranking over the competitors. You can also think of using SEO for your small business in Hong Kong. However, to get similar results, you need to have a well-optimized website. Well-optimized websites have better chances of appearing in front of your most potential customers. Thereby, you will be generating traffic on your website and gaining recognition.
Why is SEO important for your small businesses?
Whether you have a small brick-and-mortar store or a small online business, SEO can always help you. For online businesses in Hong Kong, SEO can help you gain leads and successfully convert them into customers. For offline businesses in Hong Kong, you can rely on local SEO. Local SEO will make the local customers aware of your business’s existence and make them visit your store in person. Therefore, SEO is necessary for small businesses' online presence.
However, if you are still not clear about the benefit you might get from SEO in Hong Kong, we can continue reading this article. In this article, we will talk about the reasons why a small business like yours should also use SEO in Hong Kong. Also, we will talk about how affordable SEO services for small businesses can help.
Here are the top five reasons to use SEO for your small business in Hong Kong.
1. User-friendly Websites:
SEO can help small business owners have faster, smoother, user-friendly, and mobile-friendly websites. Previously, the sole purpose of doing SEO was to optimize the content for search engines. This was done to make sure that the search engines can easily understand the website content and index it. However, the purpose has changed now. Now, SEO is also done to improve the user experience. Even search engines like Google prefer websites that offer a good user experience. A well-optimized website with great content can make even a casual visitor stay longer on the website. This will help in lowering the bounce rates and the website ranking on search engine results. So, you need to focus on SEO for your small business in Hong Kong if you want to evolve.
2. Bring in more customers:
To remain in the market, you need to stand out and boost your customer count. Boosting the customer base means you will have a boost in your sales and revenue earning as well. So, how do you think you can do it? Well, businesses generally use their websites to bring in customers. You can try to do the same. However, you will need a well-optimized website. With an SEO-optimized website, you can drive in more relevant customers and grow your business way faster than you thought before. So, you should think about focusing on SEO for your small business in Hong Kong.
3. Better conversion rate:
Of course, you want to boost your sales and generate a better conversion rate. As you can bring more customers with an SEO-optimized website, you will eventually start generating better conversions. Making your website SEO optimized will improve the loading speed, easier to understand, and more visible. In addition to that, it can make the website appear properly on all devices including mobile and tablets. Websites that are accessible from any device, well-navigated, and easy to read will get more attention from the users. This will help in holding the attention of the customers for a longer period. Furthermore, you will eventually gain more and more loyal customers, who will trust you and keep coming back to you.
4. Build brand awareness:
This is another great benefit that you might get by using SEO for your small business in Hong Kong. As discussed earlier, you can use SEO for both online and offline businesses. To build brand awareness, you need to make your website more visible on the search engine results. In other words, your website needs a good ranking on the SERPs. It will be best if it can appear as one of the top results on the first page of SERPs. This will help more and more customers find your website and get familiar with it. Eventually, you will gain the recognition that you want. However, to get the recognition you want in the market, you will need effective SEO strategies. For that, you should think of contacting an SEO marketing agency in Hong Kong.
5. Bypass Competition:
You must be well aware of the fact that you have several competitors in the market offering the same products/services as yours. This means all of these business owners and you have a common customer base. Some of these businesses must have an SEO-optimized website and some might not have one. You follow in the “not optimized website” category. The optimized websites attract most of the potential customers, leaving a few customers for others. Don’t you think optimizing your website will let you have better traffic or let you stand out in the market? Yes, it will. Search engines and SEO are very powerful tools. So, you should think of using them for your small business in Hong Kong.

“The Week In Tory:
1. The government launched a “Fix your bike” voucher website, only to break in less than an hour.
2. The government said we should all lose weight, yet is still issuing vouchers to help us buy burgers.
3. It was revealed the government spent £400m buying a bankrupt satellite company, OneWeb, to replace the Euro GPS system we lose due to Brexit. Months before, a study by MIT found that OneWeb’s tech is 6x less efficient than the EU solution: the worst of the technologies studied.
4. In June the government merged the Dept for International Development into the Foreign Office, and said the move "guaranteed there would be no cuts in International Aid". Only this week the government cut International Aid by £2.9bn.
5. And the government quietly granted permission for your health records to be given to Palantir, a controversial data-mining company said to have worked with Cambridge Analytica on Brexit.
6. It did both these things (numbers 4 & 5) the day parliament broke up, so there couldn’t be any questions.
7. In answer to questions about the Russia Report, the government’s suggested solution is to (I'm not making this up) to ask Russia to tell us who their spies are!
8. Ex-Russian intelligence staff say 85% of their work is not spying, but “political funding and misinformation".
9. Which brings us to Funding and Misinformation news:
1) Since 2012, the Tory party has had almost £3m in donations from members of Putin’s cabinets.
2) 14 current government ministers have received donations from individuals or companies connected to the Russian leadership.
3) Home Secretary Priti Patel said the Russia Report could be ignored because it was now 9 months old and “out of date”! The reason for the report being “out of date” as Ms. Patel claims is the government as it delayed the release of the report for 9 months, and the reasons given were described as “simply not true” (aka "misinformation") by the Intelligence Committee.
10. Now Covid news where Health Secretary Matt Hancock boasted he had met the targets on his “Six tests” on Covid 19. Well Full Fact found 4 of the 6 targets were missed, one target couldn’t be met because it had never been defined, and 1 “relied on a definition [that] does not reflect practice”.
11. The cross-party Media & Culture Committee found that the government’s support for arts was “vague and slow-coming” and “jeopardised UK culture”
12. The cross-party Public Accounts Committee found : 1)there was an “astonishing failure to plan for the economic impact” of Covid 19
2) It also said the policy of discharging patients into care homes was a “reckless and appalling policy error”
3) It called the government “slow, inconsistent [and] negligent”
4) The chair of the Committee said “A competent government does not run a country on the hoof”.
13. More on-the-hoof news: the government quarantined tourists returning from Spain because Spain was a danger! Yet only the day before, Spain had 2 Covid deaths. Britain had 114! Side note the transport secretary was on holiday in Spain, so was effectively trapped by his own department’s decision.
14. Which brings us to Brexit, and a report from London School of Economics showed a WTO Brexit will permanently shrink 16 out of the UK's 24 industry sectors by up to 15% each. Permanently!!!! This report lead to: 1) A Tory MP tweeted “👍🏼WTO here we come!”
2) Another pro-Brexit Tory MP with a grasp of what's to come tweeted “my strong advice is: take the opportunity to live abroad”
3) Dominic Cummings (chief adviser to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and considered to be the main engineer for Brexit) tweeted that leaving the EU "could be an error”!!!!
15. And now PPE contracts, so prepare to begin eternal screaming:
1) £252m to Ayanda Capital, registered in Mauritius for tax purposes. PPE not delivered.
2) £186m to Uniserve. PPE not delivered.
3) £116m to P14 Medical Supplies, with assets of just £145. PPE not delivered.
4) £108m to PestFix, with just 16 employees. PPE not delivered.
5) £107m to Clandeboye Agencies, a sweet wholesaler. Yes, a sweet wholesaler. PPE not delivered.
6) £40m to Medicine Box Ltd, with assets of just £6000. PPE not delivered.
7) £48m to Initia Ventures Ltd, which registered itself as “dormant” in March. PPE not delivered.
8) £28m to Monarch Acoustics, which makes shop furniture. PPE not delivered.
9) £25m to Luxe Lifestyle, which has no employees, no assets, and no turnover. PPE not delivered.
10) £18m to Aventis Solutions, which has total assets of £332. Not a typo, £332. PPE not delivered.
11) £10m to Medco Solutions, incorporated just 3 days after lockdown, with share capital of (not a typo) £2. PPE not delivered.
In all, approximately £1bn to inexplicable suppliers for PPE that hasn’t been delivered!!!!!
The government still polls well for economic competence. Go figure.
16. Meanwhile a Nuffield Health study found after 10 years of "chronic underinvestment", UK is at the bottom of the league table for health resources; and diagnostics and surgery by the NHS will take 4 years to return to pre-Covid levels! But £1bn for non-existent PPE.
17. The government’s “world beating” test-and-trace programme was described as “scandalous” by the British Medical Journal, and found to miss its 80% target in every Covid hotspot announced this week.
18. And finally, Boris Johnson refused a public enquiry into government handling of Covid 19....”-Russ

Harnessing Blockchain for Change
By: Nicholas Ambrosino ‘23
Tumblr media
Another day another Bitcoin billionaire. As we approach 2021, cryptocurrency finds its way into every piece of finance news and business journal. We are continually learning more about the blockchain technology that fuels cryptocurrency and the stream of data it perpetuates worldwide. This blockchain technology gives us the power to decentralize currency, securely store information, and instantaneously communicate with people globally. It also provides agencies and humanitarians alike with an opportunity to better assist the populations they serve. How can we harness these new-age developments for beneficial change? How can the global use of blockchain technology save the lives of millions of individuals?
Blockchain is the future of humanitarian aid. We have to modernize our approach to refugee assistance and allocate more funding to investing in modern technology to ensure lasting, effective change. Blockchain has the potential to disrupt a large number of industries and change the lives of many. This technology could help millions of refugees by solving some of the most critical problems they face. Although the applications are limitless, I'm going to break down three critical issues blockchain could tackle. The first of these issues is hunger.
Hunger
According to recent numbers, over 26 million refugees need daily support from NGOs and international organizations – and unfortunately, this number is projected to rise in 2021 (UNHCR 2020, 1). These organizations face many challenges while distributing aid—they need to keep track of all transactions made in shops and marketplaces to ensure proper use of funds and avoid mismanagement (Bayram 2018, 1). The World Food Programme (WFP)—a branch of the U.N. that has recently received the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize—is already harnessing blockchain in the communities they serve (WFP 2020, 1). In 2017, the WFP gave Syrian refugees cryptocurrency-based vouchers that could be redeemed at dozens of participating shops and markets throughout the community. Often, aid payments cost millions in bank transaction fees, but the use of cryptocurrency was found to cut these fees by 98% (Castillo 2017, 1). Along with saving money and having more funds to allocate to food security, using blockchain sped up transactions, lowered the chance of data mismanagement, and helped support local economies that were brutally impacted due to the pandemic. There is no longer a need for a bank account or cash, as cashiers use eye-scanning hardware to verify the user's identity and redeem the e-voucher funds (Bayram 2018, 1). Storing funds in a digital identity leads us to the next humanitarian challenge blockchain can overcome.
Documentation
When refugees are forced to abandon their homes, many leave behind important documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, passports, and I.D. cards. These are nearly impossible to retrieve after leaving the country—assuming they haven't already been destroyed by natural disasters or seized by a hostile government. An estimated 70% of refugees lack essential identification documents (Aburass 2017, 1). Blockchain can securely host and transfer unlimited amounts of data. Each identity verified on the blockchain cannot be faked and is time-stamped for security. Host governments and support organizations should start issuing digitally-authenticated identification documents stored in a blockchain (Mohan 2020, 1). New developments allow refugees to obtain digital versions of documentation, and with the right technology can be obtained, as home countries for refugees often have scattered analog records or haphazard digital ones verifying their identity (Huang 2019, 1). Host governments can use these to verify each individual through continuity, then issue new forms of identification. Helping refugees obtain digital I.D. documents can ultimately help them prove their identity and that of their families, and assist them in signing contracts, applying for jobs or universities. Further on the potential opportunities we could provide refugees with, I'm led to the final critical issue blockchain technology can tackle.
Work
Several challenges prevent refugees from integrating into the labor market, such as learning the local language and acquiring new skills. These issues aside, many refugees are still in the process of having their asylum applications assessed, years after arrival, and thus have limited access to work. Blockchain offers enhanced collaboration and transparency between governments, businesses, schools, and citizens. Essential information can be shared quickly and widely, with genuine transparency (Bayram 2018, 1) The U.N. and its agencies could create profiles of verified refugees on a blockchain platform, where governments and firms seeking additional workforce would have access to offer them jobs. Corporate entities would provide training, sponsorship, and employment to these individuals (Mohan 2020, 1). Another blockchain could be created in which altruistic colleges and universities can access a database of refugees seeking education and could offer additional academic courses and certifications to increase skills and schooling. Blockchain could also help NGOs provide vocational training, language training, and cultural awareness programs to any refugees who seek it (Mohan 2020, 1).  Developments in technology allow us to build an ecosystem in which refugees can acquire education and training to become eligible for jobs that would eventually help them achieve independence for themselves and their families.
Critics will argue that this shift to a more modern approach will be costly – but allow me to retort. I'm not strictly calling for more money – while an increase in funding to host governments and organizations like the World Food Programme would undoubtedly help, I'm speaking to the innovation that can occur if we reassigned and reallocated investment in blockchain without further increasing funding. Moving focus from technology that will serve the developed world to help improve the efficiency of refugee assistance. Do we invest in blockchain start-ups forming another cryptocurrency that will greatly profit a select few or start-ups that benefit millions of individuals? It ultimately boils down to appealing to angel investors' humanitarian values and the blockchain companies they choose to fund. The intricacies of blockchain technology resembles the world's interconnectivity and the connection we all share as humans. We can have another Bitcoin billionaire or aid humanitarian actors to further empower the people they serve, preserving millions of individuals' lives.
To conclude, this is an unprecedented time of unrest and movement of peoples in need. While it is not the first time we have faced these challenges, it may be the first time we have more efficient technologies to collaborate and find innovative solutions. Blockchain offers governments, businesses, and agencies the opportunity to understand refugees better and provide tangible solutions that benefit everyone. Supporting blockchain start-ups is a huge step towards solving one of our time's most significant crises, and it all starts with how we allocate our funds and channel our energy.
Nicholas Ambrosino ’23, a finance and international business major and humanitarian action minor at Fairfield University, submitted this piece as part of an op-ed assignment for Foundations of Global Engagement.

A Year of Bittersweet Capstone
This school year has been extra challenging for us. Not just because it is our last year in high school but because of our capstone subject. Every time I hear that word, it seems very daunting and bothering at some point. Knowing that I have a few knowledge about wirings and how it works, I have already prepared myself on the amount of stress capstone may bring. As I am writing this personal blog, it amazes me on how I can look back at some of the hardest part of this school year and how I can finally say 'Salamat God kay tapos na'. My biggest achievement is finally relating to Aristotle's 'The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.' This is truly hard yet rewarding task for all of us. I am very glad we are able to make our project as we have envisioned it to be.
Tumblr media
Imagine if we were given the whole school year just to work on this project without other tasks, it would be the ultimate dream. Flying agricultural drones and robots equipped with artificial intelligence? If only we were given enough time for it, it would not be impossible. Of course, in reality, there are a lot more to do and accomplish in school. We had to juggle our time between doing school works for the whole day and going to a group activity for this project after school.
To be honest, I think our school is not ready for this subject and so are the students. The school is introducing robotics in the subject but there are only few teachers who are knowledgeable on programming. We cannot just solely rely on those Indian people on YouTube to teach us all of these things. Programming is new to us, especially we haven't had any computer-related subjects. We only had ICT subject when we were in 7th grade and nothing else. I also know some students in previous school years having the same subject who had the same struggle. However, since this is part of the new curriculum of K to 12, we cannot do anything but to bear with it. Also, as a student, we also wanted to do our best for the project but we lack support. It is ironic that the school is not even initiating a seminar or a workshop for programming but is having a subject for robotics. This is our struggle. I would not be shocked if other students would encounter this problem too in the next coming years. Unless the school would really take it seriously in coming up with ways on how to make students be ready and equipped for this subject and the so-called 'Industry 4.0', everything would be fine.
Tumblr media
I salute all those programmers in YouTube who are very willing to share their innovative ideas to their subscribers. This allowed us to at least have an overview on how to properly connect and wire all the sensors. Following the instructions in YouTube was somewhat easy but programming was the hardest part since some were not willing to share their codes for the Arduino. Although they also film their codes but sometimes it is just 2 seconds of the whole instructional video. It's funny how we were so desperate to know the code that we had to screenshot some clips of the video and zoom in just to get an idea of it. We were totally clueless at the start of the year.
During our second semester, we were thankful that we had the subject Empowerment Technology. This subject was not a burden to us like how other subjects would feel like. It even made things easier for us by guiding us what to do in our projects. Calling it a blessing in disguise? I'd say yes. Our subject teacher, Sir Rae John Arango, was very willing to help us finish our project. He even set a target date for the project. I can clearly remember when he said 'Dapat before kayo magbakasyon tapos na 'yang mga projects niyo para pag Christmas wala nang problema'. Who would not want to enjoy the holidays, right? But of course, knowing that we are procrastinators, we did not meet that target date. Sir Arango still helped us program our projects despite being busy with his Continuous Improvement Project. Even if there were 11 groups for Capstone, he managed to help us all. I truly admire how he was very passionate in helping us one group at a time. To be honest, our capstone subject was only making us knowledgeable on the proper ways in conducting the research but not on how to do the actual project itself, on how to program and build the actual robot. I bet we are all very grateful that the Empowerment Technology subject are able to do this.  Doing the project was somehow a lot easier for us by since our teacher was guided us on what we need to download, search for and other sensors to buy. Sir Arango is an angel sent from heaven to us struggling students or what I prefer to call 'frustrated programmers'. We owe the success of our projects to you Sir. (Sir Arango, if by any chance you are reading this, beke nemen)
Tumblr media
We were on our track, fully confident that we are going to be able to at least start programming our project, AgriCop. When we thought everything is going in our favor, Typhoon Tisoy came. There was a blackout in our whole province. When we thought things couldn't get any worse, we were all wrong. There was no signal for us to communicate with other groupmates and to even just search in YouTube for the project. The scariest part of it is that I even had to charge our laptop using the generator while knowing the risks of the fluctuating current. I just needed to start doing the codes but then there was no internet to search for reference. We ended up doing nothing for the whole month of December. A month away from Capstone and a month before cramming and stress because of it.
Working in a group of five made it a lot easier. Although other groups have more members in their team, I mostly prefer to work in small groups. We are the only group with all girls which made it quite difficult since when need to immerse ourselves in mechanical and electronics. We are quite good in making arts and crafts, designing things, doing calligraphies and other artworks. However, this is the complete opposite of what we are used of doing. We had to let go of the paint brushes, scissors and color palettes. Instead, we learned how to properly handle screwdrivers, how to use a grinder and most especially how to solder. It was an intimidating task for all of us but we were open to learning new things. I am also grateful to my brother who taught us how to do all of these things. We did not know what tools to use but he was there to let us borrow all of the things that we needed for the project which allowed us to save a lot of money instead of buying new tools. I am so proud of what we have learned and achieved.
Tumblr media
We were already warned by our teacher at the start of the school year that this capstone project would really be worth a lot of money. We had to save money from what my parents give as our allowance in school because sometimes it is quite embarrassing to ask extra money from my parents for this. Also, we had to buy the most basic parts first since our group did not have enough money to buy all things at once. Capstone even tested our negotiating skills since we have figured out that some of the things we have ordered were not useful for the mechatronic system of AgriCop. So, we had to sell it to other groups who needed extra relay drivers and arduino board. We were also lucky since one of our groupmates have vouchers and her shipping fee for her orders is always 50 pesos only. We also had to wait for Shopee's promo such as during 11.11 and 12.12 Christmas sale for us to get discounts. We also asked for scrap materials like aluminum tubes to reduce our expenses. Overall, we spent about 6 thousand for this robot. For me, that is already a large amount of money since it is like the salary of a normal government employee for a month of work. I am very thankful that our parents were very supportive and would understand us if sometimes we go home late just for this project. Seeing how the AgriCop works and operates is worth the amount of money that we have invested for it.
Tumblr media
Last week has been the most tiring week in my entire existence. It was the very first time that I have experienced studying the whole day in school, going straight to our classmate's house, eating at around 8:30 or 9:00 in the evening, losing track of time, staying awake until 4 o' clock in the morning and going to school at 7:30 AM. We have gone through this cycle every day last week. It was physically and mentally draining. We also had different summative tests and projects to pass aside from the AgriCop. We did not even have the time to review or even do requirements in other subjects. Staying up late was the most challenging part of it. My father would always remind us to get enough hours of sleep but at that time we just cannot. We were deprived of sleep. The schedule of final defense was moved a week earlier than the planned date. Every single day we were required to pass different outputs in capstone. At that time there was no room for 8 hours of sleep but more space for eye bags and eye strain. We already divided the tasks for each of us. I was assigned to work on the write-up. There was this one time that I can't really handle my sleepiness anymore that I took a nap for an hour not minding how many mosquitoes were already buzzing in my ears and biting my arm. Four o' clock in the morning is our usual 'dismissal' in the group activity. We are so blessed that the father of one of our groupmates would drive each us to our houses even if it is already early in the morning. My father also does the same thing when we decided to do group activity for the last few days in our house. We are very grateful and blessed.
Tumblr media
We have invested so much in this project, our effort, money, sleep and sacrificing time for other subjects. At some point, we felt like we were the underdog out of all the groups but I am glad that each of us did not let go of that little hope that we can pull this through. We were all tired. I saw it in the eyes of my classmates and even in my own groupmates' as we go to school in the morning after probably not getting enough rest at all. I heard their voices saying 'Di ko na aram ang uunahon', 'Papano na ini', 'Di pa ngani ako nangarigo nan nagmahaw'. We were all going through the toughest part of our life as graduating students. I always believe that the only way to overcome a situation is not to run away from it but to get through it with high hope. I am very thankful that I have groupmates who would always lift each other up and still laugh at the dumbest things that we would do at 2 AM. The perfect term to describe all of us is 'sabaw'.
Tumblr media
We were nervous and at the same time excited during the poster presentation of our project. This was the time that we did not have any practice of our script. We just had the time to read the lines once and then the first judge already stood in front of us. We were glad that they get to appreciate our projects and made suggestions for the design of AgriCop. There was this one science teacher which was part of the judges who made me teary-eyed. Not because I was scared or intimated but because she understands what we have gone through and she was really listening and paying attention to every detail that we are saying. She told us that she really appreciates the Mechatronic System of AgriCop that is not complicated compared to other groups. She also mentioned about how it could help farmers to easily replicate our study using mechatronics. She appreciates how we put into consideration the situation of the farmers and the knowledge that they have when it comes to programming. In every word that she mentioned, I could sincerely feel her genuine appreciation to our project and how we, girls, are able to come up with AgriCop. Finally, there was at least this one teacher who can relate to all of our struggles and how hard research is. She understands our situation and acknowledges all the efforts that we have put in this project. We needed that extra boost of support at those moments. I would forever cherish all the kind words that she said to us.

The day of the final defense came. At this same day, we were also preparing for the awards in school so it made it extra hassle for us. We were practicing the script at around 10 AM and also writing down all the possible questions of the panel. I remember how nervous we were entering the STEM B room to present our project. We weren't able to finish our presentation since we exceeded the time limit and the panel already told us to show the remaining slides. The teachers were very kind to us which is the complete opposite of what we were expecting. I guess they already knew the amount of effort, money and sleepless nights we have invested for this. They commended and congratulated us for the project. They also mentioned that they witnessed how our research studies have evolved from simple studies in junior high to a research product with quality. We feel blessed that the AgriCop functioned properly and cooperated well with us. Leaving that room made us all sigh in relief. Finally, our capstone project is done. After a whole school year of working on it, it is already finished. I remember how we were all jumping around outside the room saying 'Tapos na!'. We also had a mini celebration and ate sotanghon and puto which was the food left for the panels. I can still feel that relief we all felt at that moment. A truly rewarding moment.
Tumblr media
Capstone has been a very tough subject for all of us. We weren't prepared for it, especially in programming but we are thankful that our Empowerment Technology teacher guided us all the way. Being in a group of all girls did not became our weakness, instead Capstone allowed us to work even harder and build stronger friendship.  I will leave all of the stress, rants, negative emotions, will and hopes that I have had doing this project here in my blog. As I venture more on robotics in  college or in my future job, I'll look  back at this and remember how we all started. I'd remind myself of a struggling student without any idea of robotics but manages to overcome it and finish strong.
