Terminator: Genisys (2015)

I’ll admit it. I was suckered by nostalgia when I first saw Terminator Genisys and give it too generous a rating. The movie is encouraging at first but the longer it goes on, the worse it gets.

In 1997, an artificial intelligence named Skynet launched our nuclear missiles against us in an event the survivors would go on to call “Judgment Day”. Led by John Connor (Jason Clarke), mankind was about to win the war against the machines when Skynet sent a cyborg assassin back in time to kill John's mother, Sarah (Emilia Clarke) and prevent him from being born. To save her, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is also sent back to 1984 but when Kyle arrives, he finds Sarah allied with an elderly Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and already aware of upcoming war to be waged. Now, the future and the past are both unknowns.

For some, tossing away the events of Terminator Salvation may be a relief but here’s the thing. While it might not have been good, at least it was new. The first three Terminator did all you could do with the time travel aspect. Skynet was about to look as ineffective as Team Rocket when Judgment Day unexpectedly happened at the end of #3. Now, this reboot has regressed the storyline. With the changes to Sarah Connor’s character, the news that John Connor might’ve been killed after sending Reese to the past and Judgment Day being erased, none of the other movies matter anymore… except when they do. Unexpectedly, Genisys relies heavily on nostalgia and stands on its own.

After a pretty cool encounter with a Terminator (Byung-Hun Lee), Kyle and Sarah (who bicker constantly) travel to 2017 and make one stupid decision after another. They know when Skynet becomes online so they've decided to arrive merely days before the big date. What a bunch of fools. They barely have the time to prepare a proper assault even with Sarah’s guardian “Pops” gathering weapons and intelligence for the mission.

Your heart sinks further the longer the story goes on. John Connor appears, transformed into an agent of Skynet. Every other test to create a T-3000 has killed the subjects but luckily, John’s got plot armor to protect him and merely becomes evil! When we see scheming A.I., it’s got a holographic avatar with a central brain - something we deemed ridiculous back in 2003. Don’t even get me started with that conclusion. Through a happy accident, Pop becomes a nigh-invincible T-800/T-1000 hybrid. All signs point to 2019's Terminator Dark Fate ignoring this sequel completely but if it hadn’t, what was their plan from here?

It appears as though Terminator Dark Fate will hope you’ve forgotten about this movie (and John Connor, apparently) but if you see it, there’s a scene during the end bizarrely scored end credits that promises more to come. Terminator Genisys will have you looking back fondly at Salvation, which isn’t a good sign. (On Blu-ray, October 18, 2019)
