Professor Birthday Episode Three: "Clowns vs. Princesses" Overall Thoughts
In a moment of perfect zeitgeist timing, this week featured the Woman of the Moment, the Gorgeous and Iconic Bride Herself, MRS. LAUREN LOPEZ!! And also the ever-delightful Brian Rosenthal, whom I love a lot too but didn't just get married yesterday.
I adored this episode! It wasn't quite as dark as the last one but it was such a fun idea to explore--the growing cultural fear of clowns--and the addition of the "birthday princess" idea was a really clever way to drive the story along.
Full thoughts under the cut! But the point is, Lauren just got married this weekend! Support her and Joey by supporting the projects they work on, such as, I dunno, PROFESSOR BIRTHDAY ISN'T FAMOUS!
Brian's sad clown Wahoozle (no idea if I spelled that right) was a small part of the episode but a delight and genuinely fun to listen to even as he continued to have an extended emotional breakdown (I relate Wahoozle, I relate). And Lauren's Birthday Princess is probably the best guest character we've had! So endlessly kind and supportive and elegant and the Perfect People's Princess in every way (she even uses her Masters Degree to work for a non-profit helping elderly people! What a woman!) while also showing just enough cynicism and fake-sugar to actually be interesting instead of cloying (how she handles her blatant Disney rip-offs and low-key plays Wahoozle and Prof. Birthday like twin fiddles, or even the way she drops those poor elderly people in a hot second). You can't tell exactly where the real goodness ends and the goody-goody act begins, and its absolutely perfect. She just had me cracking up the entire episode. Well done, Mr. Kahn Gale and Mrs. Lopez. Expertly played by the both of you.
I loved getting to hear Lauren sing! Clark's been writing for her voice for years and really knows how to do it: she sounds fantastic! And Jaime got to really use her lower register to make a contrast with the crystalline Soprano Princess. And I love Jaime's lower register!
Another great episode in the books!

CHAPPELL ROAN b. February 19, 1998 ╰┈➤ "It allows me to feel really safe exploring those aspects of myself. I’d never be able to do that if I took myself super seriously with pop. I think that the project has allowed me to be a part of the queer community in a deeper way because I'm not observing from the outside anymore. I feel like I'm in it."

I have this fictional person in my mind, who is Luigi and he owns a restaurant. He has this alcove in the middle of the restaurant...and he needs a painting. He has asked me, "Please, Mr. Blendini, please make a painting for Luigi's alcove." So I always think, "This is for Luigi"
