W A T C H I N G
I told my mom about this movie and she's enjoying it.
One more enjoyable movie together before this cancer removal and chemo journey begins.
But one more nice movie for us.

Is there anyone else out there who both read "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" AND watched the movie "Three Thousand Years of Longing" who I can complain to about the movie making Alithea care WAY more about her boring ex-husband then she ever did in the original short story? And for taking out what her original first wish was? Because I'm still annoyed about both of those story decisions.

The story would be better if they setup that Alithea was yearning for love and companionship from the start.
I like that the ending is a play on “set them free and if they love you, they will return”. But even this is a contrivance, they could have easily moved from England and lived happily ever after.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is a 2022 fantasy romantic drama film directed by George Miller and starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Miller wrote the screenplay with Augusta Gore, adapting the 1994 short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" by A. S. Byatt.

TILDA SWINTON in CONSTANTINE and 3000 YEARS OF LONGING
TILDA SWINTON in CONSTANTINE and 3000 YEARS OF LONGING
Figure 1 – Tilda Swinton I probably saw her in something else previous, like Broken Flowers, with Bill Murray, but I first really noticed Tilda Swinton in the fan-spurned movie Constantine (2005), with Keanu Reeves, where she played the angel Gabriel. I really noticed her in the non-genre movie Michael Clayton (2007), with George Clooney and Tom Wilkinson, where her performance was so good—her…

Three Thousand Years of Longing Trailer
Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba star MGM’s Three Thousand Years of Longing is based on A.S. Byatt’s short story “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye.” The film is directed by George Miller from a screenplay by Miller and Augusta Gore.
Alithea Binnie (Swinton) takes a trip to Istanbul where she buys a bottle. Said bottle contains a djinn (Elba) who offers her three wishes. As Binnie notes, though, “There is no story about wishing that is not a cautionary tale.”
Three Thousand Years of Longing hits theaters in Summer 2022.

Fantasy Recommendations Wanted
I already have 28 unread books to read before I purchase anything else, nevertheless, I want some very specific recommendations on fantasy books!
I have enjoyed lots of fantasy in the past (Pratchett being the bridge for ten year old me from kid books to non-kid books before the age of YA) but 99% of the books shelved in a bookshop Fantasy/Sci-Fi section leave me cold.
My absolute favourite fantasy novels are:
The His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman
The Earthsea series by Ursula LeGuin
Little, Big by John Crowley
Lud in the Mist by Hope Mirless
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye by AS Byatt
The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro
Both of Susanna Clarke’s novels (Piranesi and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel)
The Once and Future King by TH White
Also, not a novel, but Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series is the epitome of fairytale storytelling as far as I’m concerned, where everything happens after a year and a day or in a week with two Sundays or to a seventh son of a seventh son. The story The Luck Child in particular still makes me well up.
The issue is, that although I absolutely adore those books listed above, that’s about as far as it goes, almost everything else I try does nothing for me. I’ve read all of Pratchett, Gaiman and Tolkien too and enjoy them (The Watch books, Troll Bridge and The Hobbit being my favourite of each). I like the first few Robin Hobb books, I like the bits I choose to like from Narnia, I liked the first Scott Lynch book and I liked/detested The Magicians series in equal measure.
So, what am I missing? I much prefer whimsy to grizzled be-stubbled men with a grudge, I much prefer a magic system to be based on endearing nonsense rather than maths and physics and if I’ve not listed a major series/trilogy of some kind then I’ve probably tried and not liked it. I’m not particularly interested in YA (a personal preference rather than a value judgment!)
Recommendations gleefully accepted!

23 Books in 2023
@mrs-storm-andrews tagged me a while ago to name 23 books I read this year. This year was rather rocky, so no 23 book titles, reading thoroughly wasn't really in the cards for several months. However here are some titles for fun reading the endless titles for studies don't count...
Getrude and Claudius by John Updyke
Posession by Antionia S. Byatt
The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by Antonia S. Byatt
Butter by Yuzuki Asako (Personal favourite!)
Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann (also a personal favourite)
Sisi by Karen Duve
Травля, the Hunt by Sasha Filipenko
zur See! by Dörte Hansen
Djamilja by Cingiz Aijtmatov (however the names are latinized in English...)
the white ship by Cingiz Aijtmatov
Miss Smilla's sense for snow by Peter Høeg
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Susanne Collins
the Bloody Chamber and other stories by Angela Carter
House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski
Lapvona by Otessa Moshfeg
la Belle sauvage by Phillip Pullmann
other people's clothes by Calla Henkel
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisnero
the big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
honourable mentions of BD and manga: re-read of le Chat du Rabbin (defintie recommendation), Dungeon Meshi, re-read of the entire Noragami series, and part 3 of my lesbian experience with loneliness by Nagata Kabi
honourable mention of Ephraim Kishon's shorts as they never fail to make me laugh.
Next up, if anyone would like to share their favourite titles from this year: @bookwyrrn, @maddenedbythesstars, @thewitch-2077, @bengalaas. @moviestorian, @quimaera, @frederick-the-great, @bigre-fichtre, @nikita-not-nikola, @ante--meridiem, @historia-vitae-magpie, @rainhalydia, @janiedean, @devilinthebox

November Reading Wrap-Up
November was a great reading month for me, and I read 10 books this month, which is well above average. I read a several new releases, and continued on with a new favorite series.
1.Seasparrow by Kristin Cashore (4.5/5 stars): This is the next book of the Graceling Realms series, and follows Hava as the main character. An arctic and seafaring setting are two of my favorite things, and this book had both. I also found parts of this emotional and there was a theme of disability and motherhood. And more of the wonderful blue foxes. I felt like Cashore's writing reflected Hava's pov and mind, which was interesting to read. ya-fantasy
2.The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater (5/5 stars, audiobook): This was my annual reread of one of my all time favorites. The audiobook is superb and if you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? young-adult
3.Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell (3.75/5 stars): This was one of my most anticipated books of the year. This is a sci-fi set in the same universe as Winter's Orbit but in a very different place. This has do with the military, mind control, coups, and romance. mlm adult sci-fi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger (3/5 stars): This is a middle grade book about a Lipan girl and a group of animal people from the world of spirits. More ace rep, real world issues, and a good story. middle grade
5.A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner (3.5/5 stars) book 4 in the queen's thief series. Enjoyable, but not quite at the level as the previous two were. Following a different character and his development and growth. ya fantasy
6.The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake (4.5/5 stars): Sequel to The Atlas Six, and I found this one so entertaining and I could not put it down. I enjoyed this one more than the first book, and I eagerly anticipate the third. adult fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7.Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance (1.5/5 stars) Admittedly, I sort of hate read this. Which I never do, but I decided to read this mainly because I read What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte over the summer, and Catte's book is a response to this. I wanted to have a better understanding of why books like Hillbilly Elegy are detrimental to the people actively doing work in the Appalachian region and beyond. memior
8. Sistersong by Lucy Holland (4.5/5 stars): I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would at first. Lovely medieval Briton world, trans main character, pagan magic, and external threats. I had a good time reading this one. historical fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9.Thick As Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner (5/5 stars) Book 5 of the queen's thief series. My favorite so far, and I was thoroughly wowed by this book. I love the two main characters so much and I was rooting for them and their relationship the whole time. Features a travel narrative and epic poetry, so of course I loved it. ya fantasy
10.The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A.S. Byatt (3/5 stars): This is a collection of fairy tale short stories by one of my favorite authors. Some of the stories I liked more than others. literary fiction

December reading plans:
queen's thief 6
Moon Witch, Spider King (dark star #2) by Marlon James
Another AS Byatt
A nonfiction

I am still so flabbergasted that there’s a movie adaptation of “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye“ and that it’s directed by George Miller, like holy hell. I thought only me and mom even knew/cared about that collection of short stories.
