Chapter 51 of the Harrowing is here!
Chapter 51 of the Harrowing is posted! In this one, Annatar has anxiety, Elrond comes to an unwelcome realization (which a lot of readers have been eagerly waiting for him to reach), and Frodo loses his patience.
Just a little, and just for a moment, but it's still pretty noteworthy, when it's Frodo.

I have finished The Angst Version™~ (of chapter 50 of The Harrowing by @chthonion >:D) The bonus chapter added some stuff/re-inspired me, which is all to the good imo~ gotta get that Maximum Angst Factor AMMIRIGHT?? >:D (also. Mostly paraphrasing stuff just so you're aware~)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we got some of the conversation~ (without dialogue, 'cause a picture tells a thousand words~ >:D)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then a sketch that was completely inspired by the bonus chapter-
Tumblr media
It's not as 'polished' as the other ones, I just had thoughts about that tidbit and decided I absolutely had to mention it- so it got a drawing to match. :D
And finally, because I don't want to end this on too depressing a note-

:')
I'm not crying, you are.
My personal favourites include Extra Angry Maedhros + hands over the face Annatar, - then- actually. y'know what? I can't pick favourites. I like them all too much to do that. But that was the 'segment' that I experimented on - to try and convey the emotions through how chaotic/forceful the lines were, and it worked exactly how I wanted it to. Which is very satisfying.
>:D
(also, I don't think Maedhros was quite that visibly angry in the actual chapter, but it's supposed to be a mix of that plus Annatar's perception of him/what made Annatar panic. Make of that what you will. Eheh. Eheh. Eheh. >:D)

He knows the difference. And here he is anyway, curled up alone on the couch and weeping into a handkerchief, because the only thing his mind will hold is the fact that someone else has been acting upon him, with the tang of divine power under the notes.

Frodo's embroidering hobby in @chthonion's amazing story The Harrowing deserves its own sketch, and Frodo deserves coziness :)
Can you believe this is the first time I've drawn a hobbit?

little sketch dump :) I've been super inspired by @charri-fish's gorgeous marker art, I adore how they shade skin and I wanted to study them :) I loved working with just a purple or blue marker for shading (it works great on light tones but I don't have a medium purple marker so shading Orome was a bit of a challenge). I also love the green tone I overlayed on Annatar, I think it gives his skin so much more life than if I just used a skin tone and I just love it. Anyway, super pleased with my little study :D
On to the art! The first page has Orome, Celegorm, Glaurung, and Annatar. The second page has Genereux (who i solidly gave up on sorry baby), Glaurung when he was still too little to leave Angband, and Maedhros. I have close-ups for Maedhros and Annatar because I like them a lot but also because they are also fanarts for @chthonion's amazing fanfic The Harrowing! I was reading chapter 50 and just how Maedhros was described beamed this image into my head and I had to draw him! And of course I am ever a fan Annatar thinking that his poker face game is insane while everyone else reads him like a book hehehe :3

A not at all ominous conversation with the wizard. No wonder Elrond brought a sword 😄

A Maedhros and Fingon reunion in Valinor, inspired by "The Harrowing", my currently favourite fanfic, by @chthonion
This is a digital painting done in procreate.
Quote of a bit of the scene, of which I tried to capture the feeling, under the cut (you should really read the whole fanfic it's so good and inspiring!):
“You came,” Maedhros whispers at last, when they come up for breath.
“I came for you,” Fingon says. “Did you doubt that I would?”
Yes. Yes, for a thousand reasons, all of them more plausible and more reasonable than this; but Maedhros cannot answer, because he’s started to cry in earnest, and he feels as if he will never, ever stop.“I looked for you,” Fingon says. “For thousands of years—of course I did, Maedhros. I came as soon as I knew where you were.”
Maedhros muffles his face in Fingon’s shoulder and cries as he did not cry when his brothers died one by one, as he did not cry when the Silmaril burned him, as he did not cry when Elrond and Elros left for the last time.
Fingon holds him.
Fingon is here.
Fingon is alive.

“Yes,” Maedhros says, and for a second—for a fraction of a moment—his voice wavers on the sound. He takes a steadying breath. “I want to ask why. I’m not going to. You’ll tell me you did it because you wanted us to be together; and either it’s the truth, and I won’t know how to believe you, or it’s a lie, and I won’t be able to tell the difference.”
The Harrowing Ch. 32
“No, don’t,” Annatar says hastily. He hates this, hates not knowing what’s going on, but Maedhros is right; he’s not thinking clearly. “You’re sure?” “I’m sure,” Maedhros says. Either Maedhros is telling him the truth, and he truly believes it—which is as close to a guarantee as Annatar will get—or he’s lying, and Annatar is doomed anyway. If Maedhros and Elrond are working against him, Annatar cannot best them in this state. Annatar can’t even make his eyes focus in this state.
The Harrowing, Ch. 46
Hey, @chthonion, how could you do this to me?

As my spouse and I worked our way through a beta read of the upcoming chapter of the Harrowing, they kept joking that certain lines were probably on the Annatar bingo card...so I made the bingo card. Shoutout to my spouse and @ghostofasecretary for helping me get as many entries as possible!

Edit: for context, this is a re-imagining of chapter 50 Annatar being like "Look. Maedhros. I know it might feel like it's only you making an effort to atm, but you aren't the only one trying to change round here, y'know?"
I didn't come up with this, but as I was reading through the comments on Chapter 50 of The Harrowing, I saw one that absolutely needed to be brought to life with appropriate visuals~ (took me like five days before I had any spare time, but it's here now >:D)

“I am the worst of my family, Annatar,” he says, his voice low and urgent and cutting, a razor aimed at his own throat. “Everyone thinks it’s Atar, but it’s not. After he was gone, I kept going. I led them into Kinslayings. I made Maglor follow me, when he wanted to avoid more bloodshed. I kept them together and alive and moving forward, when our destruction would have served the world better. I killed innocents and permitted them to be killed, and I did it with my eyes open, with the full knowledge that I was acting against every principle I pretended to cherish save for the one that valued my family. I was willing to do anything, compromise anything, to protect them from the eternal darkness. If I was going to get angry with you, I should have been angry with you for waking me up in the Void, and letting me see the nothingness for what it was. At least before I died I could imagine that the blood on my hands was to protect my family from some unknown horror, and not from simple nonexistence.”
