~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N’s POV
I felt a sense of being overwhelmed as I attempted to set up the PO Box address. Gasping for breath, I went to my desk to power up all the necessary devices. I sank into my chair while waiting for my computers to boot up. I had just started reading an email when I received a call from the post office. After logging into my laptop, I returned to the email to continue reading.
Dear Y/N,
We closely follow your channel and greatly appreciate your insightful reviews on K-pop albums. On behalf of everyone here at JYP Entertainment, we are pleased to offer you exclusive access to Stray Kids' newest mini album, Oddinary. We kindly request that you refrain from releasing the video until the official release date. We would also request early access to the video to arrange for Stray Kids to watch it together before the release. We sincerely appreciate your continuous support for Stray Kids. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Park Jin-young
I almost wanted to roll my eyes when he asked me not to release the video until everyone could access the mini-album. Like, I would even think about doing that anyway. I click on the attachment below where the mini album sits, waiting to be listened to. I look back at all the stuff I brought from the post office and drop my shoulders. ‘Do I want to record this video first, or wait and make a video about all the stuff I got from the fans?’ That thought alone was already making my head hurt. “On one hand, if I go ahead and listen to the mini album, all I’ll have to do is edit it. However, I’ll have all these packages and letters littering my room.
On the other hand, if I do the stuff from the fans, I might be unable to record the mini album video before it releases.” I say aloud to myself. I knew that no longer sitting here would prevent me from doing anything.
After making up my mind, I decided to make a short video showing all the stuff I got from the post office and then review the mini album. So that way, I can edit it and have it ready. In the meantime, I can start opening up the mail I’ve gotten from the fans. Satisfied with the plan I’ve conjured in my head, I get started on executing my plan.
Before I go any further, I type up a professional email to JYP thanking him for the access and promise not to release the video until everyone else has access.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After creating a brief video showcasing the items I received and promising to film myself opening the packages, I uploaded it to my channel. Next, I retrieved the attachment for the mini album. I reached for my headphones from the rack on my desk and plugged them into my laptop. After conducting thorough sound checks to ensure the viewers and I could hear the music clearly, I proceeded to freshen up and grab something to eat once everything was set up to my liking.
Returning to my seat, I feel refreshed after showering and having a satisfying meal. I lean back and settle in, cleaning my teeth thoroughly with brushing and flossing. I need to present myself well to my audience, and I want to avoid any distractions, like food stuck between my teeth, that could detract from the experience. The thought of it gives me chills.
Grabbing my favorite pair of over-ear headphones, I carefully place them over my ears, ensuring they fit snugly. I double-check the microphone to ensure it's picking up my voice clearly, adjusting the distance as needed. Taking a moment to compose myself, I settle into my chair and take a deep breath to calm my nerves. With everything in place, I press the button to turn on my camera and count to five before flashing a warm smile and beginning my address to everyone watching.
“Hello Lovelies! So, I have some fascinating news for all of you. I received an email from a certain company and have been given early access to this artist's mini-album. That’s right! JYP has given me early access to Stray Kids newest Mini Album!” I start excitingly clapping to myself and smiling as wide as I can. “Now, while I may be getting to listen to this early, this video will not hit my channel until the actual release date comes. I will also upload this video once everyone has access to it. As most of you know, I listen to the whole album and then talk about it—what I like about it, what stands out most, etc. Still, in the end, I will give this album an honest review and rate it from 1 to 10. So, let’s get started.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Third Person POV
The boys were called into one of the offices, and you could say they did not feel this would be a good meeting. Even when they get to the room, they see their boss already there with a laptop. Chan, getting ready to take the heat from their boss for the group, gets stopped by JYP. “I didn't call you here because you did anything. I called you here for quite the opposite.” The boys were about to ask him what they were called in for, but their boss beat them. “I have something that I want you boys to watch. I think you will enjoy this. Leave the laptop when you’re done and press play when ready.” He tells them, leaving them with the laptop. Once he leaves the room and the boys can no longer hear his footsteps, they rush to the computer. They hesitate before pressing play, but what they see leaves them speechless.
It’s a video of Y/N, and they see that their boss gave her early access to their comeback album. Before they get too far into the video, they get chairs to be comfortable while watching her listen to their music. Changbin brings up the idea of connecting the laptop to the projector so it's not crowded around a small screen. They all agreed and fixed everything; all they had to do was press play on the laptop. Once everything is set, Chan clicks on the play button. All attention turns to the screen showing their favorite YouTuber.
“So, Stray Kids newest comeback album is called Oddinary and I will edit in a picture of what the cover looks like.” Before talking about it, she adds a picture of what their cover looks like. “Just from looking at it, I would say it looks pretty dope, like a screen-like mannequin head with screws showing out of it. Their color scheme is green, black, silver, and maybe purple. The titles on the album are, in order, Venom. Maniac. Charmer.Freeze. Lonely St. Waiting For Us with Bang Chan, Lee Know, Seungmin, and I.N. Muddy Water with Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, and Felix. I like all these song titles. Waiting For Us will be a tearjerker, so I must have my tissues on standby.”The boys start laughing and nudging each other. She bites her bottom lip while moving her cursor to the first song. “I’m going to listen to the songs in order, and I might save Waiting For Us last since I want to make sure Muddy Water gets a fair chance. Plus, I would cry in the end. Okay, without further ado, let’s get started.” The boys watch and gauge her reaction to each song. She tells them that she will talk about each song after listening to them all. When she reaches the end, she stops playing the last song. “Wow. I’m trying to save all my thoughts until after I listen to Waiting For Us. Why am I so nervous about listening to this? I know it will be a good song, but this one might knock it out of the park.” She shakes her head. “Alright, let’s do this. I’ve got my tissues on hand.” The boys laugh with her. The music starts to play, and her reaction changes right away.
Chan sees her go ahead and grab a tissue. Lee Know sees that her eyes start to look shiny. Changbin says that she’s gripping the tissue in her hand tightly. Hyunjin notices that she’s trying to keep her face neutral but fails to smile. Han watches as a stray tear falls down her face, even though she’s happy. Felix’s eyes follow her hand as she wipes her face with the tissue. Seungmin looks as she replays the song again. I.N. watches as she closes her eyes, listening deeply to the words, and tears stream down her face. At the very end, she removes her headphones, looks off to the side, and then laughs.
“I told you I was going to cry. I knew it was inevitable.” The boys smile at the girl on the screen, waiting for her review. “I will give this mini album a 100 out of 10. It has some great aspects to it. I love how each song fits and feels with the album title. There was a reason why I left Waiting For Us last: because I knew I would fall in love with it and did not want to listen to the other tracks. As it turns out, I was right.” She and the boys laugh.
“One thing about listening to a song for the first time is that not all click with you immediately. Everyone is different. Sometimes, it may take a few listens before you think, ‘I dig this song.’ Others will like it right away. I would say that I loved each song, but a couple of songs that didn’t click right away were Venom and Muddy Water. Now, does that mean I don’t like those songs? No, I enjoy them. That’s like the IN LIFE album. At first, The Tortoise and the Hare didn’t click with me. I loved the lyrics and the music, but a couple of parts in the song threw me off. Now that song can be put on repeat, I wouldn’t get tired of hearing it repeatedly. The moral of all the nonsense I’m saying is that sometimes songs don’t click right away but end up promising.”
The boys, watching her intently, wait for her final words. “I made two edits of this video since I knew I wanted to send one to the guys.” The boys freeze up as she looks straight into the camera before continuing. “Stray Kids. If you’re watching this right now, I want you to know how proud I am of all of you. You’ve come this far, and you’re still doing an amazing job. You keep showing Stays daily that you still have tricks up your sleeves.” She smiles at them. “Keep up the good work, but take care of yourselves. That means taking breaks, ensuring you eat, and getting the necessary sleep.” She points at the camera, “That means you too, Christopher.” She raises her eyebrows. “Don’t make me fly over there and force you to sleep.” The boys start to tease their leader with her mocking words. He waves their hands away, trying to listen to what she has to say. “Well, that’s it for the video! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did until we meet again. Bye!” She smiles, waving at the camera.
(A/N: I decided to add this in because why not 🤷🏻‍♀️ The reader gets first access to Stray Kids mini album and Stray Kids get early access of the reader reacting to their newest comeback. I’ll be doing a second part to this chapter specifically to the reader videoing herself opening the packages from her fans (Including the boys 🤪)
(With a special surprise 😏)
Lover Boy | Ethan Edwards
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: after a stressful day Ethan has the perfect way of coming to the rescue and giving you a moment to relax.
song: Lover - Taylor Swift
request: yes/no
warnings: none
word count: 650
authors note: when I say that I had no clue how to write this, I had NO clue. Like not a single thought went through my mind. I won’t lie, this is shit but it’s here and even the poorly written ones deserve love. If you want to see the celly that this was apart of you can view the playlist here!
Tumblr media
Pure bliss was how you described your relationship.
Ethan and you had been dating since the summer before senior year and after being best friends you two only grew closer when you both moved to the University of Michigan.
It was almost written in the stars how much you two were destined to be together. Out of all of the universities you apply to umich was the only one you wanted to actually go to and it was after you got your acceptance letter that Ethan joined the wolverines for hockey.
As a couple you always found a way to have your schedules merge for you two to see each other. But this week it was feeling a bit rough for your relationship with how stressed you had been.
Ethan rocked up to your room as it was late after a night time training session and he was surprised to see that you were still awake “what have you been up to?” He asked as he saw the scattered papers on your floor and your guitar that was on your bed. It had been a long week of near nonstop work for the music course that you were in.
The boy ultimately came to check up on you but he wasn’t going to tell you that “just been working,” you explained as you let out a sigh.
Your hands were sore from the amount of times you had strung the strings on your guitar “I should get back to it,” you added as you knew that you were only going to get less time with more work to do.
It caused Ethan to scoff “you can take a five minute break,” he pointed out as he ran his finger over the callouses that were on your fingertips as you had over played your guitar.
Complaints from you fell on deaf ears as the hockey player stood up “just hear me out on this baby.” He spoke softly as he held his hand out to you.
You gave him a testing look “not taking no for an answer.” The boy added causing you to finally listen to him.
His hand grabbed yours as he begun to play your favourite song on his phone. When the Lover album was released you dragged Ethan into your car as you drove around your home town letting you two listen and as you stopped at your favourite place in Edmonton Lover the song began to play. It sure sounded cheesy but Ethan realised that he loved you as you hummed along to the song letting yourself squeal as you gushed about how cute Taylor’s relationship was with her boyfriend.
So as Ethan held you as you two slowly danced around your messy dorm it helped you feel at ease. It was hard not to as you only had the space to look at the boy who filled your heart with love.
The hockey player let his hands go to your hips as you two just swayed along to the beat of the song.
This moment reminded you of all of the reasons why you loved your boyfriend, he had the ability to make your shitty days feel bearable.
Ethan smiled as he could see that you were thinking about something “what’s on your mind pretty girl?” He asked as he cocked his head.
You cracked a grin “how much I love you,” you mumbled as you leaned up to kiss him. It was comforting as he dropped his head to kiss you back.
The boy should have been embarrassed with how he felt like a school boy when you said that “well it’s a good thing I love you too.” He smiled as he pecked your lips once more as the song changed to the next one on the playlist that you two had.
This was the best break you could have asked for.
Behind The Campaign :: Louis Tomlinson
Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson released his debut album in 2020 through Sony but moved to BMG for his second album, Faith In The Future, in November 2022. Lisa Wilkinson, director of UK marketing (new recordings) at BMG, explains how they looked to reposition him in the market, what learnings were coming from his live success as well as his own festival, why his merchandise strategy directly informed his multi-formatted record release strategy, how they were able to build him without mass radio support, where a wider male audience was targeted this time round, why Twitter remains his most powerful social media platform and how a highly vocal and engaged fanbase was nurtured further and directly involved in the campaign.
1. Coming to BMG for his second solo album
This is his first album with BMG. His debut album, Walls in 2020, was with Syco Music [via Sony]. That was off the back of X Factor with Simon Cowell.
He had done a couple of more commercial singles – one with Steve Aoki [‘Just Hold On’] and one with Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals [‘Back To You’]. They were really successful streaming singles, but that’s not who Louis is. For the boys in One Direction, the ones that have been successful and the songs that have been successful are the ones that have stayed super pop and commercial. Louis did that but it’s just not who he is.
I think he felt, in that structure, that he just wasn’t getting the support to be who he wanted to be. That’s exactly why people come to us. It’s an artist services deal and we’re there to support you and advise you.
You can see from his live business and his merchandise business – and every other thing that Louis does – that there is an incredible fanbase there for him.
When they [Syco] released Walls, they achieved 14,000 units in week one and got to number 4 in Q1 in January 2020. We thought that just didn’t feel reflective of what was happening [around him].
We went and saw him at various venues on his world tour. We went to New York and saw those two shows and we went to Italy and watched his Milan stadium show in front of 30,000 people.
You’re looking and you’re thinking, “Those numbers don’t make any sense. How on Earth did you fumble that?” We were confident that we could do better than that.
He had a signing dinner in October 2021 and then his world tour started in February 2000 [sic], which was the delayed tour [due to the pandemic]. It went all the way through to September, pretty much nonstop.
They sold half a million tickets that year. All the while he’s on tour, he’s still making the album.
‘Out Of My System’ was released as a DSP-focused track before the album. It’s the rockiest and heaviest track on the album. He came straight off stage, went into a vocal booth off the side of the stage [to record it]. Because of the energy, he was so fired up. It was a difficult process because it was creating an album on the road.
He wanted to make an album for live. It was a totally different experience for him. Covid hit just a few months after Walls dropped so the tour was out of the question.
Before we started working on the album campaign, he did a show at Crystal Palace Bowl, which was the first incarnation of his Away From Home festival that he’s created and curated, which is for up-and-coming indie bands.
He gave away 8,000 tickets in August 2021 when we could start doing outdoor things again. I was there and was thinking, “There’s something big going on here.” The fans were so committed and dedicated.
Considering this is someone who hasn’t had real radio support or is seen in celebrity magazines or on social posts, this is a huge phenomenon.
That continued into the tour.
2 The centrality of merchandise
We started on the creative really early and that was a key factor in how successful the album was. We knew early on from discussions with management that his merch business was berserk. We knew what kind of fans he has. With their merch drops during Covid, they played around with the strategy. They got in a really cool design team and they would just do regular drops – limited-edition releases and you’ll never see it again. Everything just sold out constantly.
That informed the whole product strategy.
We knew we had to make product that’s limited in its nature because it encourages demand.
The fans just want it. It’s got to look amazing; it’s got to have Louis looking phenomenal because they just adore him; it’s got to be priced right; and there’s got to be a selection. So it’s more stuff, but less of it.
Instead of treating it like a music product, treat it like merchandise. We absolutely nailed that strategy.
We sold 35,000 records and around 2,500 units were streaming. A good chunk of that was physical album sales. It’s going to inform our strategy for any other albums we do with him.
We did 19 products in the end. We did a standard CD, we did a CD ‘zine which had 82 pages of beautiful content and photos, we had a picture disc vinyl, we did around eight different exclusive retail vinyl albums, we had a splatter vinyl for HMV, we had a colour one for Amazon, we had a clear one for Spotify, we had several more for Urban Outfitters and Target, we had an indie retailers one.
It was a collector thing: how many of the vinyl albums have you managed to get? We did a double deluxe vinyl for D2C. We did cassettes where the artwork joined together when you got all three. They were embossed and glowed in the dark. Louis has Easter eggs that he drops everywhere. The number 28 is like a lucky number, so you see 28 dotted around places. The same with 369 – he uses it in many iterations. If you had a UV light, you’d be able to see ‘3’, ‘6’ and ‘9’ embossed on each cassette.
3 The radio conundrum
We have seen historically that it has been tricky to get radio for him – but not because of any artist proposition issue. It’s just sonically that he wants to do something different to what radio wants to play.
It’s tricky because it falls through the gaps a little bit with what he wants to do. We’ve always looked at it as: let’s just assume there are zero promo opportunities at radio, TV and press. Let’s just take out promo entirely.
What you have got is a global, engaged, fanatical fanbase. You can do more with that than you can with those other things if you don’t have fans.
I would much rather have an artist who’s got an absolutely berserk global fanbase and that gets absolutely no support from traditional media – because you can work with that – than have an artist that’s not really got a particularly big fanbase but radio loves them and TV loves them. What does that matter if you’ve not got the fans?
We did always want to get promo because we would love to be able to expand Louis’ fanbase. But you’ve got to compete against Harry [Styles] and Niall [Horan]. They’re the first people you’ve got to compete against because, to play three One Direction members on the radio, I don’t know if radio stations would. Then you’ve got the sonic battle as well where he wants to keep it pretty raw.
The first single was ‘Bigger Than Me’, which is a big song to sing. It was a good bridge between the last album and this album. It gave the fans what they wanted.
We had really good feedback from radio. They played it to Clara [Amfo, Radio 1] without telling her who it was. She loved it and she did actually play it as one of the hottest tracks of the week. Greg James’s producers said it was brilliant. They absolutely adored it. Matt Edmondson and Mollie King’s team loved it. They thought it was great. But it got blocked at playlist conversations. It was like, Come on!
That was really disappointing because, pre-release, we were getting incredible feedback from producers, but we just couldn’t get it through the playlisting. We’d always planned for it not to go on radio, but if it got on radio that’d be just a brilliant bonus. So it didn’t harm our campaign strategy at all.
He’s too pop for indie stations and he’s too indie for the BBC [Radio 1]. It’s frustrating, but he’s making the music he wants to make and the fans love it. So what do you do?
‘Silver Tongues’ came out just before the album dropped, which was the official second single. That bridged the gap between those two singles. It was much more guitar based. It was up-tempo but it wasn’t too indie.
On the day that the album was released, fans bombarded Greg’s show on the 10 Minute Takeover [on the Radio 1 breakfast show]. And he played it! It was lovely but you could tell it was done like, “OK, I’ve done it now. Go away.” Which is just so sad because his demographic is right in that lane. It’s 18-25.
4 Targeting a male audience
‘Out Of My System’ was released as a DSP track, and that was really to show a different side of what was going to be on the album. It was the hardest one, the rockiest one, the speediest one, it was all about the band. It is one of the best streaming tracks on the album; it has really taken hold.
That was really just to get the male audience because we knew from the analytics we had prior to release that, although his demographics on social media are largely female, wider research that we did with our media teams said that he has a male fanbase. They’re just consumers. If they were to hear him on the radio, they wouldn’t turn it off – that kind of thing – but they’re not necessarily following him on social media. We knew that there was an opportunity there to reach another audience.
5 Building his songwriting profile
We just gave him creative freedom. Louis is really smart. He was the most proficient songwriter within One Direction. He has more songwriting credits than any of the other four members. We know that he’s a talented songwriter so it was just putting him together with people who can give him the confidence, like this album did, to move him out of his comfort zone.
There are some tracks on there that he will say were inspired by people like DMA’s and their album The Glow. ‘All This Time’ and ‘She Is Beauty We Are World Class’ have that slightly more experimental sound to them, which I think took a few people by surprise. He has really incredible writers like David Sneddon, Robert Harvey, George Tizzard and Rick Parkhouse. He has said multiple times in interviews that they gave him the confidence to have fun with it.
I don’t think he expected to get the amount of tracks that he did. It was a big album with 16 tracks. Then we put another three tracks on a digital deluxe edition in week one which shifted another 15,000 units globally.
6 Targeting the press
One of the big wins we had on this campaign was the NME coming on board. They were not interested last time. There was no music press. So one of our key targets on this campaign was to get music press.
We really wanted to get a Rolling Stone cover but the one we wanted to go for Harry was on. So we shifted and we retargeted the NME. We took them to Louis’ Away From Home festival in Malaga [in summer 2022]. He sold it out – 15,000 tickets in 24 hours.
NME did various interviews with Louis for their website and for their socials. They spoke to the bands that were on. It was a real seal of approval. And from that point onwards, we had nothing but great press from NME.
They supported everything – all the singles and we got a four-star review of the album. It was not like we bought it, but it was because we put them in the right place to really see him.
7 Boosting the digital strategy
There were two real strategic decisions that we made at the beginning that affected the outcome: one was the physical product strategy; and the other was the digital marketing strategy. If you don’t have traditional promo, and you’ve got an ardent global fanbase, digital is the most important way of getting your marketing across.
When we first started working with management, they said to us that there were some things that were non-negotiable. Everything should be fair, so we shouldn’t feel like we’re only offering things to fans of a certain demographic or to fans in a certain territory. It’s global. It’s got to be accessible. It’s got to be affordable. And it’s got to be innovative.
They are so good at doing things that break records and break the internet.
They did their livestream in 2020 and Louis sold over 200,000 tickets. It was the most-streamed livestream of a male solo artist during lockdown.
They had quite high expectations of the digital campaign going forward.
We spent quite a long time, about three months, prior to launching trying to figure out how we were going to break the internet.
With #LT369, we trended within about five minutes worldwide of that hashtag going out. When you tweeted the hashtag, it took you to a mini site where a Twitter map was starting to flag where people’s locations were. Over the course of the teaser week, the flags started to fall away but would leave ‘BTM’ which stood for ‘Bigger Than Me’, so we were teasing the single name.
We did a playlist builder and it was generated on socials as a cassette mixtape. You could share it and design your own cover on it. These were just things that really got the fans talking and engaged.
8 QR code and interactive community map at his Away From Home festival
The interactive map was linked to a QR code. We put QR codes around the festival site with absolutely no explanation as to what they were. But the fans notice everything.
We put the track titles from the album in pictures. They were really, really hidden. It took the fans two days [to work it out], but they observe everything.
Everyone started using the QR code. It took them to a website. We hadn’t announced at that point that the album was going to drop or that it was coming. It was a real mystery but that started the chatter going and we started getting trending hashtags for the album.
9 Twitter as his main platform and setting him up on TikTok
Twitter is his biggest platform [with 35.7 million followers]. What’s really interesting about that is that it’s super conversational, and you can see what they’re doing – as opposed to other platforms like Instagram and Facebook. He’s probably one of the only artists that still uses it as their primary platform.
He is really active on Twitter. He will go through bouts where he doesn’t post but then he’ll go on a reply rampage. He just replies randomly to people and does 40 in an hour. The fans go absolutely wild. Twitter was our key platform for launching initiatives and activations
There is a HQ account on TikTok and it crashed part of TikTok when it launched. Management love knowing that they crash things. We “crashed” our D2C site within minutes. There was a queue of 200,000 people in the D2C store at one point within the first hour of launching.
We didn’t technically crash the D2C store but, because of the size of the queue, it shut the storefront down which is what it does, and then forms a queue so that it doesn’t crash. We went on there and could see there were 200,000 people queuing.
10 Chart battle with Bruce Springsteen and the power of in-stores
I don’t think he ever thought he wasn’t getting a number 1 album. We beat Bruce Springsteen, we did it in Q4 and we doubled the numbers that Sony did week one last time [on Walls].
When we were in week one, and we were battling out with Bruce Springsteen, we said that there were an easy 3,000 units there if we put on four Banquet Records shows [at Pryzm in West London] and bundle the album with the tickets.
Every time they put a show on sale, you could see the numbers on the webpage. There were 200,000 people on there, even people who were not in the UK. They were ridiculous numbers.
It was more than Banquet has ever done. We sold out three shows in under a minute.
That was on release week. We had a really solid release week strategy so we knew that we had three shows in the pocket with Banquet.
We had two tracks that had not been released at that point, that weren’t on the album, that weren’t on the deluxe and that hadn’t been released as singles. We created a £4.99 digital album that had another two brand new tracks on it. You could only buy it as an album product and it was a D2C download.
We sold 15,000 of those globally in week one. We sold 6,000 in the UK. We did 3,000 extra records with Banquet in week one via the shows. We did an additional 3,000 with signed product that we put on sale in week one, because there were no other signed products in the market.
The digital super deluxe did 6,000 units. We ran multiple competitions. We gave away a signed guitar with HMV. We did a golden ticket to the tour with Crash Records.
We did a two-day pop up in Camden [North London] and Amazon contributed with signage. We did a one-day one in New York as well. We sold pop-up exclusive merch and we re-sleeved splatter vinyl with a London pop-up sleeve. We did around 2,000 of those. We did the same with the CDs and re-sleeved some CDs with the London pop-up. They were unique and fans could not get it again so they flew out the door. We had 3,000 people show up for it. That was full capacity.
We premiered the video for ‘Silver Tongues’, the second single, at the pop-up. That was the weekend of release but the single, which came out earlier that week, the video dropped on the Saturday.
11 Stationhead and Tim’s Twitter Listening Party
Stationhead is an interesting concept and we’ve done it a few times now. It’s linked to streaming, so every time you play a track within the show, it’s technically streamed by the amount of people that are listening to the show. Louis did one of those and, in terms of Stationhead’s history, it was pretty successful.
We got an email from Tim Burgess’s team saying they wanted to do a Tim’s Twitter Listening Party with Louis. They had such a good rapport and the fans were asking for it.
Beyond the chart units from the streams, it is the noise that it creates online that is more important to us.
It was one of their biggest re-listening streams, which is amazing when you think about the demographic that they have.
12 Fan-made Spotify Canvases
Across socials, we asked people to rework the ‘Bigger Than Me’ artwork. As a way of getting people to go and stream the track, we would change the Canvas semi-regularly so there was a reason for people to go and play it to see if their Canvas was one of the ones that had been selected.
The only downside is Canvases are only seven-seconds long. So if you go and you watch for seven seconds, it’s not your artwork and you come off, it can affect your average listening rate.
We were mindful of that. Our strategy was to do that post-pitching for any real major lists so that they weren’t looking at the data.
He has got really good listening data. It’s around 15 plays per listener which is way over the average. The save rate to libraries is huge and shows that he has really got a good lean-in listenership.
13 Documentary and the next steps
He’s going back on tour. He is back on another world tour from April starting in Asia and then he goes to North America. Then he comes back to Europe, culminating in an O2 show in London this time around in November. He previously did Wembley Arena.
The documentary [All Of Those Voices] premiered on 16th March and then went to worldwide cinemas on 22nd March for a week.
Charlie Lightening made it and went on tour with Louis. He had previously made the Liam Gallagher documentary [As It Was]. Historically he’s done most of Louis’ music videos as well. It was only this time around that we wanted to branch out and see if we could do something a little bit different.
It goes from the band through to his personal life and where he is now. There is a massive focus on the tour. It will blow people away to see what the Louis franchise looks like. This kid has an amazing franchise and most people just don’t have any clue about it.
The recordings business is such a small part of what he does. Obviously it helps to have records out to sell merch and to go on tour. That’s where he really excels.
I’ve never worked on a project where the fans are like they are. You get to see your visions immediately. You get to see the reactions immediately. You get to see the activation work immediately. That is such a buzz.
On most other projects, you launch something and then you have to market it and push it. This was more about pre-strategy, because you know that when you launch something, if you get it right, it’s going to work and you’ll get to see that reaction immediately. That was so much fun. Campaigns like that are rare.
𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚 (𝐏𝐓.𝟐) - 𝐂.𝐖
Tumblr media
𝚠𝚊𝚛𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜: 𝚔𝚒𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚗𝚐, 𝚌𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐?
Female Reader x Cole Walter
She stared at the mess she had made, a mess that she was so not looking forward to cleaning later...
Two days had passed, Y/n hadn't eaten in two days.
She was exhausted, both physically and mentally exhausted, she hadn't gone to school, or been outside of her room, she claimed that she was sick, she was technically sick. Sick of the bullshit that roamed her life.
She had barely even moved out of her bed; all she did was listen to Taylor swift and Olivia Rodrigo's albums over and over again and take steaming hot showers as she cried.
Other than that, she was reading and crying, but mostly crying.
Cole on the other hand had been message and calling the girl nonstop, he wanted to give her some time, but he still wanted to check up on her, but she wasn't answering.
He had called her 142 times and texted her 312 but she still didn't respond. She didn't want to talk to him, see him, or hear the sound of his voice.
Cole wanted to give her space like Danny said but he was started to get really worried, so he decided that it'd be good to come over and check up on her, give her, the homework she missed, and try to explain.
If she let him.
Cole arrived at Y/n's house, ringing the doorbell, but she didn't answer so Erin did, "What are you doing here?" she asked in annoyance, rolling her eyes at the boy, "I need to talk to Y/n," he answered holding her homework in hand, "And drop off her homework,"
"I was supposed grab that, but Mr. Applebottom (I'm so funny) said someone else already did," she snatched the homework out of his hand, the boy sighed, "I need to talk to her," he was willing to beg at this point, he just wanted to talk to her and explain.
"She doesn't want to see you," Erin closed the door on him, but Cole stopped the door with his hand and walked inside, "Who do you think you are waltzing in here like you own the place?" Erin asked yelling at the boy in annoyance.
She knew he didn't care so she just left him, but if he hurt her sister again, she'd make him pay.
Cole ignored her and kept walking until he reached Y/n's room, he planned to immediately open the door, but it was locked.
"Y/n."
no answer.
"Y/n come on we need to talk," he shouted over the music.
again no answer.
"Y/n!"
"I have NOTHING to say to you Cole, I never talk to you again, go home!" she yelled in anger, "Fine," he quietly spoke, she listened as his footsteps departed.
When she heard the front door squeak, she knew had officially exited her house, she slowly slid down her door with tears in her eyes, wishing she told him to stay.
She was surprised he didn't put up a fight but that just proved to her that he didn't care for her as much as she thought he did.
Cole walked out the front door and over to his car as Erin watched, he hopped in and started the engine. He drove down the street before walking back to Y/n's house and going over to her window, he knew she never locked it which if you think about it is dangerous, but she didn't care.
He quietly climbed inside the girl's bedroom window, stopping to watch as she cried over him as Erin tried to comfort her through the other side of the door. He felt horrible but it wasn't his fault.
"Just go away, Erin!" Erin's footsteps departed leaving the girl to break down once again. Cole quietly made his way over to the girl, making sure to not step on certain floorboards.
"Y/n."
Y/n's head shot up looking at the boy who you didn't want to see, "What are you doing here? I thought I told you to leave, Cole. I never want to see you again, okay? we are over. for good. get out." she demanded.
"No, not till you talk to me," he shook his head and sat beside her, she quickly moved to her bed, she didn't want to be near him, "Alright fine, you don't want to see me, or hear my voice, or talk to me, I know, trust me I know, I also know that you didn't see what you think you saw,"
"Really Cole? then what did I see? because I'm pretty sure I saw you eating some other girls face, while having a girlfriend!" she yelled in anger, Cole had never seen her this angry.
"If you would just let me explain, I promise you this would all make sense," she looked anywhere but him as he explained, "It wasn't like that, okay? It wasn't me I swear, that girl came and kissed me, I didn't even kiss her back."
Y/n looked like you could've believed him, but you didn't know if you should or not, was he lying? or was he telling the truth?
"You know why, because I love you, okay? I love you, not her. She didn't mean anything, okay?"
"I do not know what you want me to say other than... why didn't you come by sooner?" she said whipping her tears in embarrassment, she had been crying over the fact that he cheated on her but he didn't, she knew he didn't.
"If you had explained in person like you just did yesterday, I would've believed you," she said as she continued to whip her tears.
"I know and I should've, but everyone was telling me to give you some time and-" Y/n cut him off by pulling him into a hug, "I'm so sorry, I didn't answer your texts or your calls,"
"It's okay, it doesn't matter now, as long as you forgive me?" he questioned the girl pulling away to look at her, but his arms still wrapped around her waist, "I forgive you," she nodded with a smile, "I really am sorry though,"
"I'm the one who's sorry, I shouldn't have let you get away at the bonfire, I should've explained, I also should've come by sooner,"
"It's okay, you're here now, aren't you?" she questioned slightly shrugging her shoulders, "Yeah, I'm here now," he nodded.
"We should probably get out of here now," Y/n suggested, "Why?" he asked, "Well, I need to get away from all this depressing music, air, and probably eat some food," she told the boy, "Sounds like a good idea, right after a shower?"
"No." she shook her head, "Oh come on," he playfully pouted, "I'm kidding, relax,"  "A shower would be nice though," she thought out loud, "I knew you'd want too," he smirked, "Oh no, not with you, by myself,"
"Maybe we should eat first," he suggested seeing how pale his girlfriend was, "Why don't you order food, and I'll go shower," she suggested as she made her way to her bathroom.
"Nope, let's go eat," he lifted the girl up and threw her over his shoulder dragging her into the kitchen, she let out a yelp as she hit is back, "Cole," she yelled, she knew right then and there that she'd be up there for a while, so she gave up.
But Cole knew from right there that they would be okay again and that was all he wanted. To be okay again.
"Also, Cole," she spoke up once he sat her down on the counter, "Yeah?" he asked, standing in between her legs, "I love you too," the boy smiled at her as she pulled him into a kiss.
Cole gladly kissed his girlfriend; he was happy that they could do this instead of being separated while Y/n was practically dying on the inside.
"Oh my god you guys are disgusting!" Erin shouted once she walked into the kitchen, the two pulled away startled by her before they all laughed at the girl.
Cole then started cooking, which wasn't a good idea but then they just decided to order food and have that shower Cole had mentioned.
BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN: LOUIS TOMLINSON
MUSICALLY | 19 APRIL 2023
Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson released his debut album in 2020 through Sony but moved to BMG for his second album, Faith In The Future, in November 2022. Lisa Wilkinson, director of UK marketing (new recordings) at BMG, explains how they looked to reposition him in the market, what learnings were coming from his live success as well as his own festival, why his merchandise strategy directly informed his multi-formatted record release strategy, how they were able to build him without mass radio support, where a wider male audience was targeted this time round, why Twitter remains his most powerful social media platform and how a highly vocal and engaged fanbase was nurtured further and directly involved in the campaign.
☆彡
1. COMING TO BMG FOR HIS SECOND SOLO ALBUM
This is his first album with BMG. His debut album, Walls in 2020, was with Syco Music [via Sony]. That was off the back of X Factor with Simon Cowell.
He had done a couple of more commercial singles – one with Steve Aoki [‘Just Hold On’] and one with Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals [‘Back To You’]. They were really successful streaming singles, but that’s not who Louis is. For the boys in One Direction, the ones that have been successful and the songs that have been successful are the ones that have stayed super pop and commercial. Louis did that but it’s just not who he is.
I think he felt, in that structure, that he just wasn’t getting the support to be who he wanted to be. That’s exactly why people come to us. It’s an artist services deal and we’re there to support you and advise you.
You can see from his live business and his merchandise business – and every other thing that Louis does – that there is an incredible fanbase there for him.
When they [Syco] released Walls, they achieved 14,000 units in week one and got to number 4 in Q1 in January 2020. We thought that just didn’t feel reflective of what was happening [around him].
Tumblr media
We went and saw him at various venues on his world tour. We went to New York and saw those two shows and we went to Italy and watched his Milan stadium show in front of 30,000 people.
You’re looking and you’re thinking, “Those numbers don’t make any sense. How on Earth did you fumble that?” We were confident that we could do better than that.
He had a signing dinner in October 2021 and then his world tour started in February 2000, which was the delayed tour [due to the pandemic]. It went all the way through to September, pretty much nonstop.
They sold half a million tickets that year. All the while he’s on tour, he’s still making the album.
‘Out Of My System’ was released as a DSP-focused track before the album. It’s the rockiest and heaviest track on the album. He came straight off stage, went into a vocal booth off the side of the stage [to record it]. Because of the energy, he was so fired up. It was a difficult process because it was creating an album on the road.
He wanted to make an album for live. It was a totally different experience for him. Covid hit just a few months after Walls dropped so the tour was out of the question.
Before we started working on the album campaign, he did a show at Crystal Palace Bowl, which was the first incarnation of his Away From Home festival that he’s created and curated, which is for up-and-coming indie bands.
He gave away 8,000 tickets in August 2021 when we could start doing outdoor things again. I was there and was thinking, “There’s something big going on here.” The fans were so committed and dedicated.
Considering this is someone who hasn’t had real radio support or is seen in celebrity magazines or on social posts, this is a huge phenomenon.
That continued into the tour.
do you listen to Nick Drake and if you do not.... i URGE YOU TO. "Place To Be" is literally the greatest song EVER. and even as someone who does not care for lyrics At All. the lyrics were like a wrench in the gut. It's from his last album Pink Moon in 1970. he died in '74 :( but also no pressure to listen to it. or like it. ACTUALLY my main objective i have decided is if you are comfortable sharing, what is your music taste? which solo/band musicians do you enjoy? what genres do you like most? what is your favourite song and/or album? and do you even perhaps have a favourite album COVER that has nothing to do with whether or not you like the album? and the list can be endless you don't have to choose only 1 or 3 favs. I am all ears. CURIOSITY. and you could always share ur spotify profile to me 😏😏😏(assuming you use spotify. + as always no pressure to answer + sorry for going anon i got scared)
i listened to Place To Be and it is so beautiful omg, definitely one of my new faves!!!!!! that's going on so many of my playlists and also i'll be listening to SO MUCH of his other stuff now!!!!!! tysm for the recommendation, i love it!!!!!!!!! the lyrics really are beautiful, i feel the exact same way about them and i also am usually not too specific about lyrics ♥️
my music taste is really odd because i don't think there's a single album in the world i could listen to without finding at least one song i like!! i really like old metal and rock, I LOVE Ozzy Osbourne and AC/DC. i also love Mitski, Nirvana, $uicideboys, Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, Taylor Swift, Madonna, Melanie Martinez, Ashnikko, LANA DEL REY, and there's some country/folk artists i like too. my family was weird but they have good taste in music lol, lately i've been listening to a lot of James Taylor and Neil Young.
right now my favorite SONG is definitely Place To Be (when i find a new song i like to listen to it nonstop for the next week so tysm again for the recommendation!!!) favorite album is complicated, because there are some albums that in CERTAIN moods i can listen to without skipping a single song, but it really always depends on my mood lol.
i don't usually use spotify, unless it's to listen to this playlist i made with my mutuals a while back♥️ but all my friends use it, so it would probably be convenient for me to finally make the switch and if i do i'll drop the link!!!
(being shy and going anon is totally valid btw♥️♥️♥️♥️ thank you so much for the ask and the good music!!!!)
I got tagged by @rockcandyshrike to do a wee music meme post and I’m gonna follow her example and do my top 10 most RECENT repeated songs because that’s more interesting than just my top 10 repeated songs. gives it a lil summer snapshot. I find that I mostly listen to metal and prog in the winter whereas as soon as the sun is actually warm I remember funk and classical exists lmao
1. Breakwater - Release the Beast
However hard you might imagine this song goes, you’re not ready for it!!! Heard this for the first time before the Coheed show the other night, immediately recognised a part of it being the origin sample for the entire daft punk song “robot rock”. This is so insanely good, and my discovery of it coinciding with actual summer weather means I’ve been blasting it while driving around with my windows down nonstop lmao. You’re welcome fellow citizens. The beast is fucking released
2. Bilmuri - BOUTTA CASHEW
Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean I stop listening to metal and post-hxc… Bilmuri have never failed me except for the fact that they never tour the UK. The danciest tongue-in-cheek bangers this side of dance gavin dance
3. Halogen - U Got That
SPEAKING OF DANCE!! Who among us can resist a house drop when it’s this chonky. I heard this on a tiktok meme shared to tumblr that I had to do like 3 levels of googling to understand because I’m an old woman. But this song makes me actually want to go to a club for the second time ever in my crone life
4. Caroline Polachek - Caroline Shut Up
I had heard a snippet of one of her songs ages ago and it didn’t wow me, but I gave her new album a try and holy moly!! Really interesting acrobatic vocals plus lush dense intricate dramatic varied production… im in love. Even though this is actually from her first album, it’s the best example of what I like about her stuff. She’s like a mix of Bjork and 90s Madonna and Enya and Imogen Heap. And brother I’m nothing if not a Heaphead. Caroline pls come to Scotland
5. Maria Callas - O Mio Babbino Caro
I got this song stuck in my head and of course it’s so hard to sing along to a soprano aria, but I specifically love this Callas version because the way she really takes her time with the phrasing emphasises the longing of it and it makes me cry
6. bel canto - A Shoulder to the Wheel
Recently discovered there’s a name for an artistic aesthetic I have VIVID memory and nostalgia for from the mid-late 90s - the name of the aesthetic is Global Village Coffeehouse. I found a 50 hour gvc playlist on spotify and have been finding banging new music one of which is this song!! I love the propulsive synths and drums and the DRAMA… let it wash over u
7. Chris Rea - On The Beach
It’s got to be this specific single version not the slower album one! My whole life I only knew Rea as the singer of a pretty great xmas song until this April when my beloved pal added this to our Highland roadtrip playlist. If this doesn’t get you feeling like a neon-soaked sweaty lounge-lizard having a hallucinatory tango under a palm tree with a sexy extra from Miami Vice idk what will
8. Aviations - Coma
Is it really a joe skinks music post if there’s not a 10 minute prog metal song………….
I’m hoping their last two singles this year mean we have an imminent album incoming and it’s gonna SLAP as hard as the rest of their output! Aviations embody everything I love most and seek out in my prog metal; super agile clean AND harsh vocals interacting with the extreme amount of syncopation and intricacy in the instrumental arrangements. Aviations use piano in their compositions better than any other prog band I enjoy. I mean listen to this shit it’s beautiful
9. Stereophonics - Pick A Part That’s New
I had a really fun time making a playlist of songs I remember my parents always playing in my childhood, it’s full of a lot of 90s soul and electronic music and also this… whiny britpop. But it surprised me how much fantastic whiny britpop there is
10. Sumerlands - Force of a Storm
My brother introduced me to this album and it truly fucks how much they sound like an old-school Heavy Metal band while being fully contemporary. Like they truly sound like Sabbath or Iron Maiden but with modern production sensibilities. I LOVE the strength of this guy’s voice. Like if this doesn’t make you feel like a barbarian riding a winged steed and brandishing a massive sword against a dragon drawn by Frank Frazetta idk what will. Can u tell fantasising is how I process music
I will tag @shrikestrike @acuzena @lungtile @kitsune-sam @wordssometimesfail @kelsey-arts @erebones and whomstever else wants to… of course nobody has to if they don’t want
@biteration tagged me to post the 4 albums that i'm currently listening to the most! this was so difficult to narrow down, it's been a great year so far for both new releases and new discoveries so there's a lot of different albums i've been listening to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sleep token - take me back to eden
this one is probably a pretty obvious inclusion lol but i've been listening to this nonstop since it came out. it's my go-to when i'm driving, or want to listen to music in general. both the instrumentals and the vocals are phenomenal here, and the lyrics in some songs in particular hit pretty hard. the final track has made me cry multiple times, which i mean in the most complimentary way possible.
haken - fauna
i know the cover looks like a reference to a certain nft but i promise it isn't haha. this one took a couple of listens to really process, a lot of prog albums can be that way for me tbh but like most haken albums i'm super into it now, there's no skip songs and you can jam to just about every track. there is a good mix of very prog-y songs (elephants never forget is my personal favorite) and some more standard structured ones, which helps break things up too.
none - damp chill of life
i'm not very plugged into the genre of depressive black metal, and i definitely have to be in the right headspace to get the most out of this one, but i'm a bit obsessed with this album and this band. it doesn't hold back at all in expressing bleakness and hopelessness and pain, but by the time the album ends, i find it to actually be cathartic and ultimately hopeful, or at least it brings a sense of determination, if that makes sense. the atmosphere here is desolate, but absolutely gorgeous.
pull down the sun - of valleys and mountains
for all my talk about take me back to eden that i've been doing since that dropped, no album since the dear hunter's act 5 has grabbed me so quickly and intensely as this one. one of the best prog/post metal albums i've ever heard. the band is based in aotearoa and has yet to really tour outside of there, so i don't know if i'll ever hear this played live, but i feel like that would be a transcendental experience.
i want to include some honorary mentions so bad but i will resist... tagging @malcriada, @videnoirs, @hollowburrow, and @gliscor if you'd like to do this!
Hi Cossette! I enjoy MUNA's discography (their self-titled release from 2022 is really good) :D I just quickly looked up some details on The Japanese House's upcoming album and there will be a MUNA collab!!
One of my favourite Phoebe Bridgers features happen to be Silk Chiffon from MUNA's self-titled album! I also enjoy her more acoustic collabs e.g. Nothing New, but Silk Chiffon is a pleasant surprise in that the song is more sonically polished and upbeat (though the lyrics are nevertheless very moving)
For Speak Now TV, I'm most excited about the vault tracks: the previously unreleased self-written songs that she wrote in 2009 ~ 2010. I don't have any specific songs on the top of my mind, but I'm certainly preparing to be surprised by her choices!
In addition to the vault tracks, I'm also looking forward to listening to Sparks Fly and Back To December with the much improved production & vocals in the re-recording! (and yes!! fingers crossed that she will expand more of Speak Now & the Debut in the later shows of Th Era Tour)
I just looked up about Gracie's upcoming deluxe version of Good Riddance and am looking forward to hearing the bonus tracks :D Listening to deluxe / expanded versions is fascinating that you get to appreciate a musician's creative process towards working on the main album e.g. the songs that almost made it to the standard tracklist and it's a joy to see these songs seeing the light of the day 💖
Gracie had mentioned about personal growth whilst working on Good Riddance, so the deluxe tracks will be a wonderful opportunity to listen to the additional songs that paved way towards her maturing artistry!
P.S. Speaking of album tracks, what are some of your all-time favourite deluxe / bonus album songs?
hello jennifer!!! i hope you're having a good thursday! i saw something about a MUNA collab, and saw something about bon iver also being on the album and i'm so so excited. i know justin has worked with the japanese house before on dionne, and i really like the way their voices blend together so i'm really excited for whichever track he ends up on — i'm just so excited for in the end it always does to drop! i've been listening to sunshine baby nonstop (to be fair, i haven't been listening to a lot of music this week though).
i've only listened to the MUNA "essentials" playlist and i really like the things i've heard but i need to do a proper deep dive! i downloaded all three of their albums to listen to on the plane tomorrow, but we'll see if i actually end up listening to it! speaking of speak now TV, i wonder when we'll get a speak now TV vault puzzle! i would love for debut to get it's own section (and for more speak now songs on tour), but i feel like it's pretty set in stone now unfortunately, at least for the US leg. i'm still crossing my fingers for surprise songs though! there are a lot of things on speak now that i'm attached to (like the shaky breath in last kiss) that i hope she'll keep for the rerecording too! and yes!! i'm super super excited for gracie's deluxe good riddance! i ordered the vinyl a little bit ago, and i'm really glad that i waited to order it (there was a good riddance vinyl available in the UK that i almost caved and bought, but it didn't include the deluxe tracks). noah kahan is also, i believe, announcing the deluxe version of stick season today (?) which is exciting! i think his vinyl is also going to include the deluxe songs, which i'm really thrilled about. i'm still a little bit bummed that the midnights 3 AM songs aren't on vinyl!
i think my favorite deluxe/bonus album songs include: if this was a movie, come back...be here, jump then fall (i'm counting fearless platinum edition), the great war, new romantics, you are in love, wonderland, bruises by reneé rapp, it'll all work out by phoebe bridgers, and then all four tracks on the emails i can't send: fwd album by sabrina carpenter (opposite, feather, lonesome, and things i wish you said). i feel like i'm missing some songs here, but that's all i can think of right now! what are some of your favorites? 🤍
hii so i just got this idea and i haaaave to share
you know taylor swift’s my tears ricochet?
THE BRIDGE
'and i can go anywhere i want, anywhere i want, just not home'- suresh can literally have anyone, like, the girls are dropping their panties and opening up their legs for him, BUT the only girl he wants, the only one that feels like home is mc, and he fucked up their relationship and can’t go back to her, even if that’s the only thing he truly wants, cause she cut him off after the break up.
'and you can aim for my heart, go for blood, but you would still miss me in your bones' he hurt mc. badly. that’s not up for debate. and in the villa, knowingly or not, he’s still hurting her (i mean coupling up with arlo and flirting with her the whole day even tho mc said she wants to give him a second chance? dick move). but even tho he’s kind of digging that knife deeper and deeper, he seeks mc, he misses her, he needs her. and he’ll still do anything to get her back. he’s trying his best, just has a funny way of showing it (lmao)
'you had to kill me, but it killed you just the same' by hurting mc, his one true love, he hurt himself. he repeatedly shows signs of selfloathing, especially in those episodes right before casa; "i spent a long time wishing i could take it back, how i hurt you" "living without you doesn’t even compare" "they haven’t learnt the lesson i learnt from losing you" and whenever mc takes a jab at him, he always has the sad expression. that man is hurting, he regrets everything he did, especially cause he sees that mc’s upset by it, even after all this time has passed.
Bestie YES TO ALL OF THIS!! Fellow Swiftie here, I’ve been playing Folklore nonstop since this season started!! I think that album as a whole is soooo MC/Suresh vibes, the angst, the love, even the cheating / moving on parts of their relationship.
Your take on the lyrics are so spot on 😭 I think the lyrics work even better if you’re on a Suresh route but i could even see them working when you’re not and just have so much angst about the relationship😫.
Also this part:
“And I still talk to you (when I'm screaming at the sky)
And when you can't sleep at night (you hear my stolen lullabies)”
It gives me his last speech before casa vibes. When he told MC that the reason he came was because she probably needed closure, because he still did. Makes me think of how many sleepless nights he spent thinking of MC, talking to her ghost to pass the time 😭😫
If you thought tears ricochet worked for them, listen to exile 😭😫😣😩😖 it’s sad, so fair warning, when you compare to their relationship.
and i know !!!! min with cats is truly one of the most healing things :(
and yes i did! watching that truly was an experience! i remember watching and seeing lix and min get eliminated and my heart just broke for them tbh my god. and the lix and chan part !!!!!!! forever crushes my soul. (also i tried to watch that video but literally had to pause after five seconds because i couldnt handle it ahfdjskg)
aaaaah dance teacher minho my beloved '(as if all the genres of lino arent my fav!!)' adshjf same again !! you truly truly get it mel <3. there's just something so soft about it! :(
and im glad to hear you've had fun getting into them ! 'felt like i was going insane when i first got into skz because their music is SO GOOD i was listening to it 24/7 and constantly had random parts of songs stuck in my head throughout the day LOL' ahjdskf valid !! was there a certain song/album that made you really get into them? or !! wait was case 143 your first comeback then? -🌻
santaa ur back i missed you!!
i remember the struggles of my uni days so i totally get it 😭 is it finals season right now? you got this <3 fighting!!
as for which album got me into skz, i remember i listened to the whole noeasy album straight through and i was like wow this album was literally no skips for me, maybe i gotta learn more about them?? and now the rest is history hahahaha. i also just really love a lot of their title tracks especially the ones like all in, miroh, and gods menu that are so hype (i had the DDU DDU DDU DDU DDU DDU part stuck in my head a lot when i was listening to skz music nonstop 😂 love that part). it's funny because i remember i tried listening to some skz music when i got into kpop in 2020, and i was like idk if this is for me....and now almost 3 years later i'm like THIS IS MY TYPE OF MUSIC LOL i love the noise music <3
case143 was kiiind of my first cb?? but not really in the sense that i wasn't anticipating it, since i was just learning about them when the album dropped (i fully got into skz like a few days before lino's birthday 😂 so that was good timing i guess since he ended up being my bias (and dare i say now...one of my ults....👀))
also LOL THE WAY YOU CORRECTLY GUESSED that my fav track on the maxident album is taste....ok but hear me out, besides the fact that lino is in it and the choreo is....the choreo (lol), i also love lino's falsetto in it (the "don't make me bad i'm addicted to you" asdjfhak i want to hear him sing more!! i think he has such a sweet voice 🥺) and the way that the song slowly builds up and then drops at the chorus with the beat! give me your tmi is my 2nd fav track on the album i think though
MAAAARK IS MY BELOVED I LOVE HIM :(((( i started off in kpop as an nct fan, and i have been slowly collecting more groups and i'm becoming a multi mess hahaha. besides nct and skz, i also like txt (soobin is my bias but i love all of the boys a lot <33 it was so hard to pick a bias); nine.i (a rookie group i discovered recently whose music IS SO GOOD??? one of their members produces the songs too i think and i highly recommend listening if you haven't heard of them - young boy and wasted youth are my favs but their whole discography is no skips for me); day6, p1h, svt, enhypen (in varying degrees of familiarity lol), and i also like kbands like xdh, nflying, the rose (i mostly listen to their songs and dont really know all their names but ONE DAY!). i'm mainly a bg stan, i dont have anything against ggs but i usually listen to their music and dont know their names lol (currently obsessed with stayc's songs). what groups do you like? :D
also im glad you enjoyed the lino fancams LOL (no shame here, i am the one who listed 12724 fancams after all jsahdfka) i love how he is so silly on stage and seems to truly enjoy it!! i always laugh at the thunderous fancams where his hand slowly slides down to changbins butt hahahaha. also i discovered this gods menu lino fancam today which i must share because it is insane and he went so hard especially in the chorus, i love how he really commits to all the moves and has so much power yet control in them. and yes, all his fits are amazing ugh he is sososo gorgeous
this also got really long so dont worry about it haha it just means we're having a good convo :)) hope you have a lovely day/night as well <33
How are you doing today? Pretty swell. I’m on leave Monday to Wednesday without knowing Thursday is a holiday, so I’m feeling great that I only have to work Friday ;) Not having the usual feeling of doom I get on Sunday evenings is apparently enough.
What is the last song you listened to in a car? All Day by RM and Tablo. I’ve been streaming Indigo nonstop since it came out; it’s almost ridiculous how well-made the album is from start to finish. Not always do you come across a body of art that strongly translates as a labor of love - and not just love in the case of Indigo but of blood, sweat, and tears as well.
Do you like prefer apple cider warm or cold? I don’t even drink that. When did you last feel misunderstood? Haven’t felt that way in a while.
Have you ever visited The Louvre or would you like to? I’d love to but I’ve seen how crowded it can get so tbh I’d be just as fine and content going to less-populated museums.
Have you ever accidentally locked yourself out of your place of residence? Well, not by accident. But there were a handful of afternoons in grade school where I was dropped off by the bus but there had been nobody to open the door (the helper was out). It was whatever and I just hung by the carport.
Do you remember your favorite songs as a kid? Had to have been Disney soundtracks and such. I wasn’t into music until I was around 10, when I started getting into Beyoncé.
Do you currently feel calm? I am mostly calm yeah, but my stomach is being a bitch and is keeping me from feeling at my 100%. Probably from the amount of coffee I had today + the massive six-course meal I practically wolfed down at lunch.
When did you last lace up a pair of shoes? Last Friday when I wore Chucks to work.
What's your go to comfort meal? Spicy tuna salad and sushi.
Do you enjoy cloud watching? I’m not so much an observer of clouds. I prefer stars.
Do you currently have any candles lit? Nope.
If applicable, what's your favorite sports team? I don’t like watching sports.
How many cardigans do you own? I used to have this cute black one but I have no idea where it went. I last wore it December of last year then it just kinda...disappeared lol which is frustrating.
How much is too much for clothes? (I am mad at myself over purchasing a $30 cardigan lol) I actually don’t mind shelling out for clothes sometimes since you’re paying for quality. That said, the only time I’d actually react is if I see the price of some designer brands for, say, a white t-shirt that I could buy the exact same look of at some department store.
How soon do you normally decorate for holidays? The only thing we put up is a Christmas tree and we do that either late October or early November.
Are there any important things happening this week? Nah, I’m leaving work behind this week and am feeling like a free fucking woman. Only agenda on my book is to catch up on going to museums, which I’m going to start on tomorrow.
Do you know anyone who is terrified of dogs? Yes, I know a handful of people who are.
What scent was the last soap you used? Just the plain/basic smell of soap. How old were you when you made your first big purchase? I was 23 when I bought my current phone. I will put up the disclaimer that my dad’s credit card was initially used to make the transaction haha but I pay him every two weeks, so it’s technically under my expense still.
What last made you angry? Just a bunch of drivers and pedestrians being stupid during our drive up to Antipolo earlier.
What's a color you think is underrated? Idk if there’s any I would call that.
What are you usually doing when midnight comes around and you can't sleep? Watch YouTube videos or play In the Seom until my eyelids start feeling heavy.
What is your favorite way to eat rice? (white, steamed, fried, brown, sweetened...) Steamed and white.  What color is the top you're wearing? Red with white print.
When did you last laugh so hard you cried? Lmfao, last night. My dad had been retelling a HILARIOUS story to my sister (which he had already shared with me that morning), and since I knew how the story was gonna go I ended up in stitches while he was talking, which made him laugh too. Then we’d both try to calm down, he’d start talking again, I’d laugh again, he’d laugh too, and that entire bit just happened like five more times until I had tears running down my eyes. Poor sister literally never got to hear the end of the story because at the end of it all the entire dining table was just laughing too.
What's your favorite horror movie? The Shining.
What's your favorite and least favorite fast food restaurant? Favorite would be McDonald’s, Jollibee, and KFC. Least fave is Burger King...I don’t hate their food but the menu is just a little boring. It’s my least favorite only in the way that it’d never really be my first choice.
How many pictures can you see in the room you're in? No pictures here in the dining room.
When did you last sign your signature? Last Tuesday.
What cover do you think is better than the original song? Paramore’s cover of Drake’s Passionfruit.
Are you currently listening to music? Yeah dude. Indigo.
What do your favorite pair of pajamas look like? It has a purple checkers pattern; and instead of pajama pants, the bottoms are shorts. The top is free-size so it looks a bit big – but cozy – on me.
What is something you've been working on? Being a better and a more patient leader. And improving on task delegation. Still focused on work after all this time, seriously? Hahaha.
What's something that excites you about the future? Growing and learning through the experiences I’ll inevitably be gaining. I don’t wanna mount big expectations on my shoulders, so for me making the most of what I have and where I am is enough for now.
How often do you drink smoothies? Never.
What's a TV show you have gotten into recently? I started watching The Golden Girls last night and the first couple of episodes were hilarious.
Have you ever had to have a tooth cut out? Uhhh not cut out but pulled out, yeah. I’ve had that happen twice.
When did you last rush for something? Last Friday when I, to nobody’s surprise, waited for the last possible minute to get up before work.
How many blankets do you own? Three.
Have you drank enough water today? Sure.
Do you prefer apple pie or pecan pie? Not much of a pie person but if I had those two choices right in front me I’d head towards the pecan one in a heartbeat. What color takes up most of your wardrobe? Black.
What makes you feel alive? Accomplishing something, making people smile, being around my friends, getting strength from Bangtan.
Who is your last missed call from? Can’t remember. I usually pick up my calls now though since they could always be related to work and I don’t want anyone ending up complaining about me.
Do you have any unusual pet peeves? Picky eaters.
What is a food you think is nasty that most people enjoy? Grapes.
Would you rather never be sick again or be rich? Be rich.
What I'm listening to now:
De Todas las Flores by Natalia Lafourcade (October, 2022)
The Loneliest Time by Carly Rae Jepson (October, 2022)
There Goes Rhymin' Simon by Paul Simon (May, 1973)
Been thinking about how you don't have to do a single extra thing. You could eat and sleep and do nothing more. I am very grateful to Tricia Hersey, the Nap Bishop, for her consciousness-raising work around rest as a form of resistance within the context of US slavery. I am very grateful to my family for teaching me the basics of naptime. It goes like this: after lunch, everyone drops. We reconvene around 4 to drink tea. My dad can add to this, tell you about napping in the parking lot when you're at your job, and sleeping at 9:30 pm daily. Lately I've been napping almost everyday, and I wake up feeling like I went to another dimension. That can be disorienting, but mostly it's good. It's something to look forward to. Going to sleep at night is still tricky. The depressed, pessimist part of me feels like sleeping is giving up, but there is a way to make it a ritual of self love. I love being snug like a bug in a rug. It's a time for nursery rhymes and lullabies, a cup of sleepytime tea, returning to the soft few square feet that know your body best, a pile of clean laundry lying peacefully beside me.
What happens when you sleep is that your ears turn off. The eyes are easy, the lids close and it's obvious what is happening. It's harder to notice when your ears stop listening, because it's the last thing that happens before you sleep. And so, when the ears stop, it's extra exciting to wake up in the middle of the night and hear a song or thought playing on some nonstop livewire of the subconscious. Not that it's even deep, it's usually the last song I was listening to before I slept. But there it is, the innards.
Natalia Lafourcade's new album De Todas Las Flores is her first album of original music since 2015 when she released Hasta la Raiz. The album is inspired by a romantic break. Ed Morales interviewed her for the New York Times recently, and she said: “Breakups can be so deep, at the cellular level, that you have to reconstruct your life and reconnect with yourself. It’s difficult work, forgiving yourself, forgiving the other person. So I went to walk in the mountains, and returned to my garden, a metaphor for a field of emotions and possibilities that had to be explored.”
Relevant to sleep, rest, silence and listening that they allow for are these few lines from the mid tempo, waltz-ish dance number "El Lugar Correcto:"
Perdona si lloré, lloré, lloré mientras bailaba
Tenía dolores viejos que atender de aquel pasado
Entonces regresé a ese silencio necesario
Para escuchar el corazón hablar de la verdad
I don't really want to translate this, because translating is so difficult, but the gist is: "I'm sorry if I cry during this dance / I have old pains that I need to tend to / so I will return to this needed silence / to listen to my heart speak of the truth." It's nice to hear her emerging from her silence with this song, the intermittent tears a reminder that there are unspoken things that will end us unless we visit the quiet heart regularly.
I have a lot less sound in my life right now. I used to live with 3 roommates, work on a staff of 60, and spend my day with four different groups of 30 teenagers. I had a tendency to cultivate the kind of close friendships where I didn't always know which voice was mine and which wasn't. It's ok, that happens, it's pretty normal. When you break up with a person, place, job, or whatever, we use metaphors like "snap out of it," or "wake up," but now I realize it sort of felt like I had my eyes open the whole time and couldn't sleep. It's been a disorienting and ongoing thing, to recalibrate. A lot of my recent experiences are marked by confusion: is this quiet loneliness? Are my innards, laid bare, inadequate? (The answer is always no; you can always do absolutely nothing; silence and space are not the problem).
De Todas las Flores is very good. It's serious, very beautiful, timeless, which has sort of been Lafourcade's vibe for a while now. One of my favorite tracks is "Canta la arena," because it's bouncy, and it's about the ocean, and features lap steel, the beachiest sounding instrument. It offers continuity for those still wishing for summer, as if Lafourcade is simply doing her healing on the quieter side of the same tropical island as Bad Bunny. The lead single off the album is "Mi manera de querer," which is, unexpectedly, a bisexual anthem. Now everyone can wonder if it was a woman who broke her heart.
Along with Lafourcade and Carly Rae Jepson, the other artist I have been listening to incessantly is Paul Simon. I adore him. It's surprising to me how endlessly relatable his music is to me. Right now I'm listening to "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" from 1973. At a pace:
"One Man's Ceiling Is Another Man's Floor:" It's just apartment house sense / It's like apartment house rents / Remember- one man's ceiling / is another man's floor." I got new neighbors on Nov 1, which I at first thought was a family visiting my neighbors for the weekend. But no, there are children and they live here and they scream and run around and I can hear everything.
"St. Judy's Comet:" "Little sleepy boy / Do you know what time it is? /Well, the hour of your bedtime's / Long been past / And though I know you're fighting it / I can tell when you rub your eyes / You're fading fast."  My sister, brother-in-law, and baby niece stayed with my parents for about 10 days this month and it was very sweet seeing the little one do things like sleep, eat, and scoot around. Loved hearing this lullaby from Simon, about what I realize now is a very common situation for parents (baby doesn't want to sleep). I added this song to my playlist of songs by artists addressing their children. which is a lovely playlist. It's also cute to hear about this son a few years before he goes on a trip to Graceland with his "famous daddy."
"Take Me to the Mardi Gras:" Just to mention my favorite lyric on the album: "You can legalize your lows / You can wear your summer clothes / In the New Orleans," which is such a great moment of alliteration and slant rhyme, as well perfectly evocative of the desire to be sad and wear your summer clothes (again, if it's not clear, I miss the summer, go ahead call me Miss Summer!!).
"An American Tune:" The album is from 1973 and he is Paul Simon, so he kind of does this annoying exoticizing thing with New Orleans, matched by the off putting patriotism in "American Tune," but whatever. I recently saw Rhiannon Giddens cover "An American Tune" when she performed a few weeks ago at McCarter Theater in Princeton, and she shared that Simon re-wrote the song for her in a different key so she could play it on banjo, and also changed the line about the Mayflower. I wish I could hear her perform now, after I'm much more familiar with the song, but whatever. Probably still a little too patriotic for my taste. But there are beautiful moments, including the last lines which are fittingly sleepy for this blog post: "Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day  / And I'm trying to get some rest / That's all, I'm trying to get some rest "
Yeah so that's all folks, just trying to get some rest so I can listen to my heart!!
Meeting Their Long Distance Partner For The First Time ~ BTS Reaction
Jin:
You could feel his eyes staring on you for the whole journey as you made your ways to the dorm, eventually calling him out on it as you finally glanced across to look at him for the first time.
A bright red blush made its way onto Jin’s cheeks, “I’m sorry, I just keep thinking that I’m seeing things and that you’re not really here.”
You held your arm out in front of him, “why don’t you pinch me? That way you’ll know that I’m real.”
“I’m not pinching you,” he laughed, “I know that you are there, but it just feels like I’m living in a weird dream when this is a moment that I have dreamt about for so long.”
“I hope that it’s better than your dreams though.”
His head nodded immediately, “seeing you for the first time has made me happier than I could ever describe, you have no idea how I’m feeling right now.”
“If you’re anywhere near as excited as I am, then I think I do,” you joked.
His hand reached across to rest gently against your leg, “excited doesn’t even begin to cover how I feel. I just don’t want this to all be a dream.”
“It’s not a dream Jin, I really am finally here in Seoul, with you.”
Tumblr media
Yoongi:
He couldn’t look away from the stare that you had looking out of the window as you had your first sightings of Seoul. You’d heard so many stories, but the real thing exceeded it all.
Yoongi almost had to pinch himself that you were finally beside him, “I bet Seoul is so different to your home, it’s a whole new world.”
You turned your head to look across at him, “it’s just so big and busy, I’m not used to a city like this.”
“You get used to it,” he assured you as your eyes moved back to looking around, “there’s so many places that I’m going to take you to over the next week to explore.”
“I’ve already spotted a few places that intrigue me.”
Yoongi’s head nodded, “make sure you remember them and I’m sure that I’ll be able to squeeze them into what I have planned for us, it’s a busy week.”
“A busy week to make up for so many months far apart,” you smiled.
His smile matched your own in an instant, “you’re exactly right, there’s so much time to make up for, so that’s what we’re going to do.”
“I can’t wait to see all the things you’ve planned out for us.”
Tumblr media
Hoseok:
As he opened up the door of his room in the door, you couldn’t quite believe the background you’d spent so many months seeing Hobi in, was finally real and in front of you.
Hobi’s smile was wide as he stood beside you, “I’ve spent hours sat in this chair talking to you, and now you’re finally here.”
Your head shook in disbelief, “I’ve spent so much time staring at all of the photos behind you too.”
“Hopefully, we’ll be able to take one for the two of us whilst you’re here,” he smiled, showing you a gap in his albums, “I’ve even made space for you.”
“Am I worthy enough to appear on your photo wall.”
Hobi’s arms snaked tightly around your waist, “you’re more than worthy enough to make an appearance. I’ve waited months for the chance to be able to put you on there.”
“I’m sure over the next week we’ll take plenty of photos,” you smiled up at him.
His head nodded back at you, “who knows, I might even go crazy and find the space to put two photos up there of you and I to remember this time by.”
“You really do know how to go crazy Jung Hoseok.”
Tumblr media
Namjoon:
Your eyes lit up as you looked around the arrivals lounge noticing Namjoon stood a large placard in his hands with your name written across it and a wide smile plastered across his face.
His arms wrapped around you as soon as you were close to him, “it’s so good to finally meet you in person, this is crazy.”
Your head nodded in agreement, “I can’t believe that you’re real, you’re a real human Namjoon.”
“What were you expecting? For me to be a robot?” He laughed, taking a hold of your hand, “I’m real, and you’re real. All of this very real right now.”
“I just never really imagined you as real.”
His head shook as his hands cupped either side of your face, “I know what you mean, you’ve been a face on a screen for so long that seeing you physically is just so surreal.”
“It feels like a dream, that’s the only way I can describe it,” you chuckled.
His head nodded in agreement, “the best dream ever, a dream that I’ve been counting down the days to coming true for so long.”
“I completely agree, it’s the best dream, and reality.”
Tumblr media
Jimin:
His smile grew as you lifted up the plane ticket so that it was in shot for Jimin to see. It was a moment he’d longed for, and at last, it was finally happening for the both of you.
You moved it to the camera so that Jimin could read the information that was on it. “I can’t believe you’re actually coming to Seoul.”
Your head nodded, “it’s got it written there in black and white, there’s no turning back now Jimin.”
“I don’t want to turn back either, I’ve waited for the moment when you would come to visit for so long,” he chuckled, continuing to stare at your ticket.
“Can you believe next week I’ll finally be with you.”
He threw his head back, running his hands over his face. “It doesn’t quite feel like it’s happening just yet, I don’t think it will until I really have you here in front of me.”
“There’s so much I want to see of Seoul and explore with you,” you mused.
His smile widened once more, “I’ve already made a list of all the places that I want to take you to make this an unforgettable trip for you.”
“I really can’t wait to finally see you, properly.”
Tumblr media
Taehyung:
As your last evening in Seoul began to come to an end, neither of you quite knew the words to say as you relaxed beside each other in Taehyung’s dorm, staring aimlessly around the room.
After several minutes, Taehyung was the first to break the silence. “It feels like you’ve only just got here, and you’re going.”
You glanced across at him with a weak smile, “now I’ve done it once, I can come and visit more often.”
“It just feels like I’ve got used to being able to hug you and kiss you in person and I’m having to let you go,” he admitted, “I don’t think I’m quite ready for that just yet.”
“Next time you can come and visit me, and I’ll show you around.”
His head nodded at the idea, appreciating how cheerful you tried to remain. “I definitely don’t think I’m quite ready to go back to just seeing you on the screen either.”
“I agree, seeing you not in person again will feel like a step back,” you acknowledged.
Taehyung frowned as your mood dropped, “let’s not think of it as a step back but building towards when we can see each other again.”
“I like that way of looking at it, it’s a lot better.”
Tumblr media
Jungkook:
Meeting his group members was always the moment that scared you the most about finally visiting Seoul. As you walked into Jungkook’s home, you could feel them all looking at you straight away.
Jungkook moved his arm to wrap around your waist, “guys, this is Y/N,” he grinned, letting you go as each of the boys gave you a hug.
It felt slightly surreal as you saw them all in the flesh, “it’s so good to finally meet you all properly.”
“Jungkook’s talked about you nonstop, at least now you’re here we can tell you all the things he’s been saying about you,” Taehyung teased.
“I want to know everything you have to share.”
Jungkook’s head shook beside you, pulling you away from them. “You really don’t have to listen to their stories, I have plenty to share on them as well.”
“I want to get to know all seven of you,” you soon assured him.
His smile grew as he looked down at you, “why don’t I show you around before we do anything, you can get to know where you’re spending the week.”
“I already know this place; I’ve seen it on video enough times.”
