Agitated

I am oddly agitated.

Not that it never happened to me before: I do remember the nervousness that took over when I operated on the twins; it was not basic. I was about to make an astonishing discovery, an outstanding achievement, and after… my previous failures I felt ill at ease. Couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep; spent nights drawing endless schemes and graphs, scrutinizing the readouts, checking the blood tests, the X-rays, the God-knows-what-else.

Didn’t help.

I simply couldn’t sit still. My hands grew itchy, my veins grew itchy, my intestines grew itchy, my whole organism felt out of place as if it needed proper cleaning from the inside. Maybe it’s exactly what I am going to do. Cleaning. Nobody dies from it. It’s a routine surgery, in Gallinger’s parlance; nobody dies from a routine surgery if they are overall fine.

Am I fine?..

I stare blankly at the phone. They have reattached the cords, it works as it used to. Which, by itself, doesn’t make any sense anymore.

I am slightly agitated.

My hands are itchy from the inside, and I can’t help it. I am at the threshold of another scientific revelation, a breakthrough that will change the medical world, but I… not that I don’t care at all. I do.

But I’ve been caring for too long.

When Christiansen had committed suicide, I couldn’t understand him or his motives: how could a man of his intelligence, a man of his grandeur and stamina, make such a rash decision and deprive people of his incredible ideas and unique approaches.

Then Sonya died by my hand. I killed her. She wasn’t my first corpse, not even a second, but I deceived her. She was not bound to ever wake up, and she kept haunting me even when I was drowning in heroin. Impossible: nothing could reach me in such a state, but she somewhat succeeded to glare at me from the other side.

Now I get it.

It’s not about the burden, not that pathetic horseshit about ghosts haunting you till the day you die.

It’s about you. Your visions, your setbacks, your underestimation, your lack of… what exactly do we lack? Knowledge? Time? Basic understanding of the processes in a human body?..

What is it? What is it that we don’t know?

I sigh and cast a glance at the phone on the windowsill. They reattached the cords. Her voice will never reassure me. She sounded so confident, she did trust me, and I… failed her. Where did I go wrong? It was another routine surgery, with not-so-routine tools. Why, of all people…

I tap my fingers across the table. I am certainly not fine, and even Gallinger seems a tad put-off. The Gallinger, who felt no contrition whatsoever at abducting me from the sanatorium and forcing me to tie those damn knots. The Gallinger, who punched Edwards in cold blood – in public. The Gallinger, who handled things with immense nerve.

Even he looked concerned.

I reach for the phone, stop halfway, realizing. Grab a crowbar and break into a drawer. Fuck it. Self-performed operations aren’t a novelty, but I still need my courage – or delusions.

Am I afraid?..

Pull the plug. Sniff it in once, twice…

So be it.

“Dr. Thackery?” Bertie’s clearly troubled.

“Sure, Bertie the Wise. Bring in the gurney! Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown!”

Ten minutes to go.

And then Dr. John Thackery, no matter the outcome, will become history.
