hiiiiii <3 25, 4, 20, 13, 14, 4, 3 + is there any passage you read this year that really stuck with you?
hiiiiii! evilly skipping 3/4/14/20 since i've answered them in other asks even though you asked first
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
dodging the question a little. none of the books i read were absolutely horrible, else i wouldn't have finished them. brennerova (wolf haas) wasn't particularly good, but brenner novels exist for their writing style, not the story/characters. didn't like the echo wife (made the mistake of thinking about the world-building), small game (which was gripping and enjoyable but tragically missing a proper ending) and la couleur des choses (could we please get to breathe for one page before getting the next bit of horrible news) as much as i hoped i would, even though all of them have something interesting going on in terms of their themes (echo wife), tension (small game) and narrative techniques (couleur)
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
next year i will finally read at least one french/german/norwegian/swedish book each again. also, despite numbers being entirely meaningless, finish 30+ books. ideally, branch out a little in terms of genres (some poetry? collections of letters? some other fiction genres?)
passage that stuck with me
dissertation epigraph just kidding kidding question mark but also it's funny (with added funniness for personal reasons and also based on the context in which it's placed in moby dick)
Finally: It was stated at the outset, that this system would not be here, and at once, perfected. You cannot but plainly see that I have kept my word. But I now leave my cetological System standing thus unfinished, even as the great Cathedral of Cologne was left, with the crane still standing upon the top of the uncompleted tower. For small erections may be finished by their first architects; grand ones, true ones, ever leave the copestone to posterity. God keep me from ever completing anything. This whole book is but a draught—nay, but the draught of a draught. Oh, Time, Strength, Cash, and Patience!
w&p andrey bolkonsky battle of austerlitz sky moment. but also many of the war scenes about the utter somehow humanizing stupidity of the soldiers and generals. i did go into this book thinking i'd enjoy the society scenes and tolerate the war scenes, but some of the war scenes are in fact pretty good

for the book ask: 3, 4, 6, 14, 12 :)
3. What were your top five books of the year?
Hm, tough to pick...in no particular order, I'd say Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, Eastbound, Pulling the Chariot of the Sun, Stations of the Tide, and The Postcard. Drive Your Plow and Eastbound are probably going to be all time fiction books for me, but the others were also really really good.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Quite a few! Most of the authors I read this year were new to me, but I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of Maylis de Kerangal's work, and Olga Tokarczuk's, and Pulling the Chariot of the Sun got me really curious about Shane McCrae's poetry.
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
I requested and then forgot to pick up The Myth of Normal from the library like 3 different times this year lol. I do finally have it, but am somewhere in the weeds of the first chapter, so I'd classify it as not having really got to it...yet. I also didn't almost anything from my owned book backlog :/
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
None! I'm currently reading 3 500+ page nonfiction books, so I don't anticipate finishing any of them in the next week.
12. Any books that disappointed you?
The Forest Museum is what I'm remembering with the most annoyance and disappointment at this point - this post touches on why, and having read some more very good books since then, the mediocrity of that one is even clearer. I was also pretty disappointed by the little I read of The Lightning Stenography Device by M. F. Sullivan, but I didn't finish it so maybe it gets better...maybe.

What do I have in common with the Jews? I don't even have anything in common with myself. Nothing could better express the essence of Franz Kafka, a man described by his friends as living behind a glass wall. Kafka wrote in the tradition of the great Yiddish storytellers, whose stock-in-trade was bizarre fantasy tainted with hilarity and self-abasement.

interesting question from tumblr user thetrial. btw did you ever have an issendorf-related url
let me dodge the question and instead give you the three books that got to me the most
lolita. books that make you read a host of essays right after including a whole other follow-up book (lolita: the story of a cover girl: vladimir nabokov's novel in art and design)
2. der process. the weird br audio book adaptation specifically
3. moby dick. i thought it would be quite meh and then many (although definitely not all) parts were in fact very fun/enjoyable

MOVIE QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“I only came here because I wanted to see if the inside of this famous legal system was as loathsome as I guessed it was. And now I’m too depressed to see anything more. I just want to get out of here and be alone.”
