[ID: a screenshot of an unreviewed Genius annotation for Fall Out Boy’s song Pavlove. The lyrics are “It’s three drinks too late to/Talk to anyone but myself.” The words “three” “too” and the “one” in “anyone” are highlighted. The annotation in question reads “3,2,1, clever”. /end ID]

One of my favourite pastimes is finding the most beautiful unreviewed annotations on genius lyrics. Offical notes that provide factual context on the artists are nice. But someone’s personal interpretation and emotional response to the words written purely out of love for the music? That’s where it’s at.

Genius.com is bullshit. I added this obviously genius annotation to Faith Hill's The Way You Love Me and it remains unreviewed and has a -2 rating. They hate me because I'm right.

After Dark Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I see you, you see me
How pleasant, this feeling
The moment you hold me
I missed you, I'm sorry
I've given what I have
I showed you I'm growing
The ashes fall slowly
As your voice consoles me
[Chorus]
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
[Verse 2]
We're swaying to drum beats
In motion, I'm feeling
My patience controlling
The question, I won't speak
We're telling the stories
Our laughter, he knows me
We're leaving, we're talking
You're closer, it's calming
[Chorus]
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
[Bridge]
The night will hold us close and the stars will guide us home
I've been waiting for this moment, we're finally alone
I turn to ask the question, so anxious, my thoughts
Your lips were soft like winter, in your passion, I was lost
[Chorus]
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know
As the hours pass
I will let you know
That I need to ask
Before I'm alone
How it feels to rest
On your patient lips
To eternal bliss
I'm so glad to know

In Feb. 2015, Mr.Kitty uploaded “After Dark” to his YouTube channel with some cover art. In April 2019, a fan named Diana Sandra posted the song to YouTube with footage from “Career Opportunities,” a 1991 film with Jennifer Connelly, which in April 2022 had more than 55 million views.
“I really appreciate the fan videos and making my music accessible to people that don’t really know what I do or anything like that,” Mr.Kitty said. “And then the ‘Career Opportunities’ one popped up, and I just remember watching it and I was like, this movie was really, really bad. I was like, this movie kind of sucks. But the way that Diana Sandra…edited it, made it good, I guess. And so it really got people interested.”
“And then months later, it’s just like the views for that kept climbing. And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.’ But the thing is, yeah, they can’t monetize it. So all the views and all that goes to me.”
In a funny twist, Mr.Kitty loves Jennifer Connelly and has several collectibles, including a photo book from “Labyrinth” – a movie she starred in from 1986 – and a record where Connelly is singing in Japanese.

What’s your interpretation of Orville’s line “Some other town, someone else's life Dead in the night,”? I had one opinion first but then a different one occurred to me and I’m curious to hear what others take this part to mean 👀
This is a really interesting question. “Dead of Night” is one of those songs where I’m a little like, “No thoughts, just vibes.”
In the sense that it was extremely impactful for me the first time I heard it (I’m pretty sure I cried), and now when I hear the line “spend a Johnny’s cash, hitch another ride,” every thought threatens to vacate my brain.
If you read the (unreviewed/unverified) Genius annotation, it suggests that the narrator is the one who has been left behind in this scenario. I think that’s a reasonable and valid take, but in a LOT of Orville’s music he (the narrator of any given song) is the one who never settles down and spends his time on the move. Judging by the snapshots we get off the relationship he’s singing about, he tends to be the one on the move even before the relationship is over. We do see the other person saying, “It’s time to ride,” but aside from that, we get Orville telling this person to “hold on tight,” and we hear that they “shut their eyes,” which suggests that Orville is the literal (and positively figurative) driving force. He doesn’t seem to sit still for long.
So my theory would be that HE is the one in another town and “another life,” after stepping away from the relationship, for better or for worse. The life he describes earlier in the song (“let’s get high,” “spend a johnny’s cash,” “hitch another ride,” etc) seems pretty chaotic and unsustainable for long periods. I imagine that our narrator left that life behind for something more stable, but in the process became something he never expected or planned to be. He is now, effectively, in “someone else’s life,” and his old life and old relationships are “dead” now—even though their memories still keep him awake in the literal “dead of night.”
Although it’s not the same kind of relationship or as serious of a betrayal as the one in THAT song, something about that this narrative reminds me of “Pancho and Lefty,” by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.
Lefty, he can’t sing the blues all night long like he used to. The dust that Pancho bit down south ended up in Lefty’s mouth. The day they laid poor Pancho low, Lefty split for Ohio. Where he got the bread to go, there ain’t nobody knows….Pancho needs your prayers, it’s true, but save a few for Lefty too. He only did what he had to do, and now he’s growing old.
What do we leave behind when we save ourselves? How do we decide what is and isn’t worth it? Do we ever get to know if we were right?
