#This reminds me. There are a few other 'au's' I should help Mug and Partner write soon.
...
What?
Why are you looking at me? I had nothing to do with this recent development of a new... alternate universe, or whatever. I'm simply here to facilitate the process as per usual.

Daughter of wonderwoman au where marinette finds out her mother is actually Diana and somehow it ends up with her meeting/being introduced to the batfam maybe because she has super strength and is seen yeeting some bad guys who tried to mug her... Or something.
“... you are running from your problems, Mari,” Adrien’s exasperated voice reminded his best friend. Again. She ignored him, and he threw his hands up in exasperation. “Look, you don’t have to do anything about it! Nobody would hold it against you if you decided to just, ignore that you found anything out at all. But you need to actually think about what we just found out and decide whether or not you’re gonna do anything—“ he side-stepped a piece of trash that went flying in his direction. “—or if you’re gonna move on and pretend nothing happened.”
“Isn’t that what I’m doing?” Marinette shot back, pushing her bangs out of her face and tying her hair back with one hand.
“No, you’re currently hiding away in Gotham to avoid your parents while you beat up every random group of idiots who thinks you’re an easy mark,” he retorted. Another wannabe kidnapper went flying in his direction, making him sigh and side step again. She had thrown that one with only her one free hand, showing just how upset she was. “You’re ignoring everything in your life, which is not what we meant we said you should get a little space.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Marinette dropkicked the last criminal into unconsciousness before stepping back and putting her hands on her hips. She looked over at the now seven passed out men in the alleyway, and the one very frustrated ex-model pinching the bride of his nose. “I think I’m coping just fine.”
“It’s better than being forced to suppress all of your emotions, sure,” Adrien reluctantly agreed. “But not by much. Your angry rampage through Gotham has already attracted more attention,” he raised his hand to point at a nearby rooftop. Several shadows lurked there, looming over the building’s edge. “Which, might I add, is exactly why I told you not to come to Gotham.”
“You’re the one who followed me here,” she shot back before turning to the shadowy figures above them. “Go ahead and come down! But it was self defense, and you can’t arrest or beat me up for defending myself!”
The first figure to drop down straightened your just as quickly, revealing the imposing figure of none other than Batman himself. The little white eyes on his cowl seemed to narrow on their own as he looked down at her.
“That might be true, but I’m sure you know my policy on metas in my city,” he grumbled back at her. He wasn’t necessarily threatening, but he definitely wasn’t welcoming either. With all of his limbs hidden behind the cocoon that was his cape, Marinette would never be able to predict his next move if he did decide to fight. Not that she seemed particularly worried about that as she crossed her arms over her chest and met his glare evenly.
“Oh, do you own this city now? I wasn’t given the memo,” she retorted. “And considering I didn’t even know I was a meta until last week? I think I deserve a little slack. I’m angry and if people think the tiny little girl in pink is an easy kidnapping target, then it’s their fault for making themselves into the perfect practice dummies for me to try out my newly discovered strength on.”
Adrien saw the eyes on Batman’s mask narrow even further. Marinette wasn’t exactly at her most charismatic at the moment, and Adrien didn’t wanna get the both of them into a bad relationship with the experienced superhero who always seemed to know things he shouldn’t know. So he stepped up quickly, getting in between Marinette and the Bat and holding his hands up in a placating gesture.
“Okay, Monsieur Batman,” Adrien started slowly, making sure his posture was impeccable and his smile bright. “She’s telling the truth, even if she’s not... the most tactful about it right now. She just found out some very concerning things about her origin and Gotham is the best place for her to hide from her problems and let loose a little pent up aggression. But— well,” he grimaced. “We didn’t intend to run into you guys, but maybe it’s a good thing we did.”
“How so?” Batman was clearly still incredibly suspicious of the both of them and wasn’t giving an inch. So Marinette rolled her eyes (she was still very moody) and leaned around Adrien so she could get a good look at the monochromatic hero.
“I thank my lucky spots that we ran into you, Batman!” She said monotonously. “Me and Adrien are paw-sitively excited at this opportunity.”
Batman. Froze.
Not only were those two lines the very first lines ever spoken to him by two foreign heroes a few years ago (with a few key words changed to protect identities), but they had become their code phrase for whenever they made calls to one another outside of their costumes. All at once it seemed to hit him— the golden hair and bright green eyes on the boy, the blue-black hair and normally super-focused bluebell eyes on the girl that were currently sporting very uncharacteristic frustration. Their heights. Their builds. All of this info flowed through his mind and compared to the information stored in his memory, and it only took the span of two seconds for everything to click.
Suddenly Batman was at full attention, back straight instead of looming over them and eyebrows clearly raised high under his cowl.
He knew Chat Noir and Ladybug would never take a random vacation to Gotham. Ladybug herself had nearly waxed poetic about how much the city depressed her just from the pictures she saw online. If she had willingly come to visit, it was more than to just blow off some steam.
“Batcave?” He asked, earning a relieved look from Adrien and a moody silence from Marinette.
“Please,” Adrien agreed. “You can probably help us, actually.”
—*—*—*—*—*
Marinette leaned back in the metal debriefing chair, legs up on the table and looking for all the world as the picture of pure teenage rebellion and angst. Coincidentally, Red Hood was in the exact same position in the chair next to her.
Batman and all of his other bats and birds were in the cave with the two off-duty Parisian heroes. Everyone except Adrien and Marinette still had their masks on, since the two Parisians were still not privy to their identities. Yet.
To be fair, the bats hadn’t known the identities of the two miraculous users either before today.
“Cha Noir,” Batman started, only to get a head shake from the blond boy.
“Just call me Adrien. Chat’s out of the bag—“ he ignored the groans at the pun and soldiered on, “—so might as well use my real name.”
Batman nodded. “Adrien, then,” he amended. “Why are you and Ladybug really in Gotham?”
Adrien sighed. “I wasn’t lying, before. Marinette,” he gestured to his hero partner. “Just found out some distressing family news. Since HawkMoth is gone, she doesn’t need to repress her negative emotions anymore. But she also didn’t want to be around her parents while she processed everything. I told her to choose any other city— really, I begged— but she insisted on coming to Gotham.”
“The never ending cloud cover and constant rain seem thematic,” she finally spoke up, reaching into her big over-the-shoulder bag and pulling out a large envelope. She threw it to Batman, making the thin package slice through the air like a knife. To nobody’s surprise the seasoned hero easily caught the projectile between two fingers. He looked at the envelope and back to Marinette, silent questions floating in the air between them. Marinette decided to answer at her own pace.
“That’s what we found out. You see, one of my friends is a huge science nerd. A genius. And he wanted to compare DNA samples between us to see if there were any genetic components that determined a person’s suitability towards certain Miraculous or other magical artifacts over others. It was supposed to just be a fun side project that he didn’t expect any breakthroughs on. He mostly just wanted to satisfy his own curiosity. But instead of finding out if our DNA was linked to the miraculous, he found out that my parents are not biologically my parents.”
“Hence the whole just finding out that you’re a meta thing, right?” Nightwing spoke up, fully invested in the story. “Did they never say you were adopted before?”
“It’s not in the system,” she replied easily. “My parents have all the documentation to prove that I’m their biological child, except I’m not. When I confronted them about it, they caved and admitted that they had adopted me in secret and covered it up. Apparently a friend of theirs was involved in something illegal, and,” she waved at the envelope that Batman was now opening. “The details of what we were able to dig up are in there. The summary is this; their friend was part of a secret, illegal experimentation to create clones that could defeat the Justice League—“ the air seemed to get sucked out of the room as soon as those words left Marinette’s mouth. Everyone seemed to know exactly what she was talking about. “—a group called CADMUS. They made me, as apparently one of their early attempts. But I didn’t exhibit any of the powers they were looking for, or any meta traits at all, and my body refused to mature at the rate they wanted. They had no use for a seemingly normal human baby that they managed to clone, so they were preparing to kill me and start over. That’s when my parent’s friend stole me, not wanting to kill an infant, and begged my parents to take me in and pretend I was theirs. Low and behold, it turns out that my DNA just needed a very specific series of emotions to unlock it’s latent abilities.”
“Those emotions being..?” Red hood trailed off, earning a wolfish smile from Marinette.
“Intense anger, betrayal, and confused frustration closely followed by the desire to punch other people’s faces in.”
“That last one is just an assumption,” Adrien chimed in. “And maybe not accurate. But the first three, our scientist friend was able to confirm. The rapid experience of a lot of negative but action-oriented emotions released whatever had been holding back the powers in her DNA from expressing themselves,” he had switched to French so that he could explain everything exactly as Max had told it to them, but he knew all of them were fluent anyway so it was fine. They nodded along, processing the information.
The crinkling of paper drew everyone’s attention back to Batman, who had been flipping through the detailed break down of everything they had found about Marinette’s situation and how she was made by CADMUS.
“Uh,” Red Robin nervously spoke up. “What’s up, Batman?”
“Your genetic donors...” Batman breathed, getting a wink and finger guns from Marinette.
“Yup. Isn’t that just the most fucked up thing you’ve ever seen? They were clearly trying to make someone who could destroy the world.”
“That makes me nervous,” Nightwing admitted, getting up and going to get a look at the papers himself. “It can’t be that ba—“
When even Nightwing was left agape, everyone else who wasn’t in on it found themselves squirming.
“Just tell the rest of us, already!” Robin demanded after the silence stretched just a bit too long.
“The unknowing genetic donors that CADMUS used to make me,” Marinette spoke up, still with her legs up on the table. “Are a very mad-scientist’s-wet-dream combination of Lex Luthor, Bruce Wayne, and Wonder Woman.”
“We don’t even know why they added Bruce Wayne’s DNA,” Adrien admitted. “Although our scientist friend thinks it’s because of physique. His hypothesis is that, in order to support the genes of Wonder Woman, they had to add male genetics that could support the production of a very high muscle mass and would lean towards easy development of a very athletic body. Lex might be evil-scientist smart, but he’s a string bean. But if he added the DNA of another multi millionaire who just so happens to maintain a ridiculously fit body without putting any obvious work into it,” Adrien shrugged. “Then maybe the clone would be able to support Wonder Woman’s genetics and that of two human donors without falling apart.”
“So I’m ‘the clone’ now, huh?” Marinette snarked, earning an exasperated eye roll from her friend.
Batman just stared at the both of them for a moment. He walked away without a word, and came back with a fresh needle and a box. He placed it on the debriefing table.
“Can I do a paternity test myself?” He asked, his voice suspiciously less gruff than normal. “I trust the both of you, but I rather be safe than sorry with something like this.”
The both of them just stared at him in confusion. They traded a glance, and finally Marinette shrugged and moved to sit in her chair properly. Her shirt was already short sleeved, so she just held her arm out so Batman could easily get a blood sample.
“Sure, why not. But do you just have Lex Luthor or Bruce Wayne’s DNA sitting around to compare, or—“ she shut up when she watched Batman take off his glove and roll his own sleeve up. Realization slowly sunk in as he asked Nightwing to take a blood sample from him.
“Holy shit,” she breathed, eyes wide. “You’re— and Luthor doesn’t know— holy shit this is even worse than I thought,” Marinette rambled, not even noticing as Red Hood moved forward and took a small blood sample from her.
Adrien put a hand over his face and just laughed for a moment hysterically. “Oh my god,” he looked over at Marinette. “You could take over the world.”
“I have the blood of Batman AND Wonder Woman on MY side,” Marinette joked back, also hysterical.
When the bat’s high tech equipment was able to come back with a positive result only a few minutes later, Marinette and Adrien had to sit on the floor and just let it all sink in. Which Batman did not at all help by immediately unmasking himself and trying to make a proper introduction.
“I wanna go beat up random thugs again,” Marinette whined, pulling at her hair. “I’ll put on a mask, whatever, but just please let me punch people. I need to punch people right now.”

Rolling out of bed and flailing onto the floor as a start of your day ensures you that the following 24 hours will ultimately suck ass. Getting up and readying yourself for the day by looking through one of your cardboard boxes for your favorite Dynamight hoodie, the back of your mind keeps nagging you, trying to remind you of something buried deep in your subconsciousness, and you have half a heart to try and remember, because for some odd reason, you feel so fucking weary, as if the few steps from your bed to your bathroom are somehow now endless miles, almost making you breathe out in relief after finally reaching it.
And as you are making your coffee, that odd feeling keeps annoying you again, prodding at your brain to remember something, something. And ultimately, that's when your eyes fall to the counter. You knew this day was coming and you were dreading it for months, so as you look at the calendar on your kitchen counter, you frown, the quote of the day you always love reading so much long forgotten when your eyes fall on the date.
Tumblr media
“You’ve gotta be kiddin' me.” You mumble at the calendar on your counter hatefully with furrowed eyebrows, as if it would either reply or change its date, it doesn’t do either, and your lips curl downwards even further. As in immediate response, you pick up your phone, your coffee pot tossed aside as you dial the number of the only person you could think might help you right now.
“G’morning y/n -” you hear Kendo’s voice through your phone, and you honestly want to sob right then and there, but you hold yourself, barely and speak over her overly cheery voice first thing in the goddamn morning. “It's Kats- Bakugou’s birthday” you whimper at the slip up, being so used to the first name basis you were in with your now ex-boyfriend.
“Yeah, was kinda hoping you would’ve forgotten.” She sighs, tugging at her bangs and pulling back her phone to check the time. “Tell you what, I get off work in an hour, then I’m spending the day with you. I’ll get tequila, I know you love your shots.”
“Ken, it's like 10 right now..” you can’t help but pout, having alcohol in your system as an escape to help you forget about the entire day still sounding better than the urge to cry and crawl into a hole, even if it's at the start of your day. “Y'know what? Get those gummy worms I like too.” “Bet.” you hang up with a sigh, moving back to the kitchen to sift through your bubble wrapped kitchen utensils, barely forcing yourself to prepare breakfast as to not have your liquor on an empty stomach.
You loathe the fact that you remembered his birthday, always reminded of him no matter how long ago since you’ve last seen him, being the center of the media’s attention for years as the number 6 hero in japan has its perks, well, in his case, but to you? Nothing but trouble and heartache as every channel you flip through plasters his face, whether it be about some big rescue mission he partook in or a new rumor about a potential lover to the explosive hero, followed by him almost attacking a reporter, yelling to them about ‘needing to mind yer goddamn business and keep my fuckin’ name outta your mouths’. Therefore, you opted long ago to stay away from the TV to avoid seeing him, his captivating rubies for eyes, covered by that goddamn mask you like to push up to his forehead, sweeping his bangs away and exposing his sweaty forehead that he bumps against yours as he makes love to you, still in his hero costume, all battered and dusty and so incredibly hot you have to-
You grip your coffee mug tighter, almost to the point of breaking the handle off of it, placing it rather roughly onto the table before pushing your food away, appetite gone with the thought of whatever paradise you were thinking you were in before now long gone and never coming back, all because of you, of your action, of your mistake.
Tumblr media
Kendo walks in with a bright smile on her face, as if her overly cheerful attitude will balance out the void you’re slowly but surely falling in. She shakes the bag of snacks in your face as you blink your eyes back into focus. Dragging your heavy feet across the floor to get to your kitchen to retrieve the shot glasses. Only kissing her cheek in thanks when you snatch away whatever it is she brought with her to lift your mood.
She eyes the boxes by your kitchen, the four placed haphazardly in your living room and the one you're using as a stool while filling your shot glasses, tongue sticking out to try and fill each one to the brim without spilling any on the new coffee table that she failed to notice before is still wrapped in bubble wrap that prevent any damage during the moving process.
“y/n…” you hum in response, a frown falling on your lips as the third glass spills a bit and the liquid pools on the plastic.
“Don't you think that you should’ve probably unpacked a while ago? Hasn't it been, what, five months?”
“I didn't know you were gonna come here to harass me about my life choices, Kendo”
She flinches away, your tone venomous, almost feeling it as a slap to her face, before leaning in when she sees your eyes start to water.
“If I did, that just means it's true… that just means it happened, and I did the stupidest thing- you know what,” you wipe the few tears that managed to escape away with the sleeve of your sweater, looking down at the shots in front of you. “It, it doesn't matter anymore just- can I just drink and try to forget about how my life has gotten nothing but fucking worse since the day I left him?”
You questioned your worth that one time, that one time all those months ago. Thinking that by doing what you did and leaving, he’d drop everything and run behind you, chase after you and win you back, but he didn't, and as you sit surrounded by the evidence of how much of a failure you find out you are without him, you regret ever questioning it, ever questioning him. Because to you, living in denial was so much better than whatever hell this is.
So all you could think of is to just drown yourself in alcohol until your mind is too numb to think of the possibilities of how you could have avoided this, how you could’ve been a less of shitty person, and stop imagining how your life would be now if you just swallowed all your insecurities and just stayed. Despite the neglect, despite not being prioritized, because in some weird twisted way, those lies held you with warmth that you were never able to find after uncovering the ugly truth you’re living in right now.
Tumblr media
You lay on your living room floor, the alcohol swirling in your system and clouding your vision as you trace imaginary shapes in your ceiling, the voice of Kendo muffled as she rambles on and on about her day, the amount of outlaws she bitch slapped - a term she uses to get a laugh from you - and how she considers herself the unluckiest being in the whole world for having Monoma as a partner of all people, seriously contemplating who she should beat up first between him and the villains.
“Must be nice,” you voice, low and slow, scared of how Kendo would react to what you’re about to say, yet your intoxicated self unable to stop your mouth from uttering the words. “To have a purpose in life, to not be quirkless and lost like us.” your face twists in an ugly scowl at your ceiling, but mostly to yourself for putting a downer on whatever mood your friend is trying so hard to build, proven by the hitch of her breath before she enters your peripheral vision when she leans over you, all upside down and pouty.
“What’re you talki-” the shrill ringtone of her phone breaks you away from each other as she leaps to fetch it and silence the god forsaken thing by answering the call. “Battle Fist here, yes sir, I was partnered up with Phantom Thief for the patrol at area B, n-no sir I wasn’t informed.” Kendo breaths out in irritation, pinching the bridge of her nose as she starts tapping her feet aggressively on the floor, eyes falling onto yours when you look up at her all weary and sad, knowing what she would tell you once she hangs up. “That dumbass is gonna be the end of me I swear.” She crouches down to your level and kisses your forehead, promising to be back in the morning with hangover food, before she leaves and locks the door behind her.
Now you’re left all alone, back aching from laying on the hardwood floor and eyes watering as you feel your loneliness eating you up inside, the god awful music thumbing loudly in your ears followed by the cheer of people as you-
Music?
You sit up abruptly, groaning at the dizziness of the swift movement as your hands fly to cover your ears, a failed attempt of ensuring your brain doesn’t begin to spill out from them, because of the loud voices, the bass shaking your entire fucking apartment by how strong it is, and you curse yourself for falling for the scheme the landlord pulled you in, paying half of the rent everyone did, just because you lived right below the penthouse that hosted the loudest parties in the area, 4 days out of the fucking week.
The money hungry shameless bastard praised the apartment the minute it spiked your interest all those months ago, selling it so well you actually moved in the next week, anything to stop feeling like a burden to Kendo as you couch-surfed her apartment. Only to realize within that first week from your downstairs neighbors that he rents the penthouse to host parties of all sorts, and due to its location in the city, it was pretty popular, yet you didn’t have the money to move out again, nor the heart to concern your friend with your problems, as she was a hero with other responsibilities aside from taking care of your hopeless self.
So you get up, barely gathering yourself onto that elevator to tell off whoever the fuck will answer the door first to turn the music down. You pound the door with your fist repeatedly the minute you reach it, the door opening so suddenly you almost punch the man standing in front of you in the chest, the cool air created from the door cooling your warm cheeks as you squint at your victim for the day.
“Welcome!”
“Listen here, you buttfaced moron” you start to chew the person’s ear out, your sight blurring yet still able to notice how bright his hair is, how fiery and familiar it looks, and you’re certain you’ve seen it somewhere before. “I’m trying to drink away my regrettable life choices and cry over my ex-boyfriend, so if you would just turn down the-”
“y/n?” oh, that’s where. Your stomach drops as Kirishima looks down on you, the bright smile he flashed to whoever he was welcoming now dropped with his eyes almost bulging out at your presence, you both stand in silence, the boy unbuttoning the collar that suddenly feels like it has a chokehold on him while you cross your arms and hope the floor would swallow you a floor down back into the comfort of your home.
Kirishima basically is shutting down the second his eyes lay on you, breaking a sweat as your eyes never waver, despite how you fail to stay standing straight, what was he supposed to say? ‘Hey we’re throwing a birthday party for your ex-boyfriend because he's been feeling depressed from the day you dumped his ass’ ? No!  He wouldn’t do that to his friend, but what was he gonna say now?
Well, he didn’t have to really think about what to say to you, because his other friend didn’t hesitate to push him forward, slurring something along the lines of ‘lettin the hot ladies in so they can take a look at the prettier blond, aka moi’. In his moment of panic, the redhead stumbles forward, his cup slipping from the tips of his fingers and meeting its doom by the floor, whatever was filling it now staining your pants as you both look at the mess between you.
“Woah bro, we said you gotta get’er wet but not- '' Denki's cackle stops him from continuing whatever filth he was gonna spew out - thankfully - before his eyes drop down to your chest, or more like what was covering it. “Hey! You a Dynamight fan? Hey Bakuhoe, comere for a sec.”
Dear God, move, for the love of all that's pure in this god forsaken world, move! Run!
All you could do is shake and breathe in short segments as your widened eyes meet his unamused ones, the garnets in his eyes glistening at your sight, he stands straight and so tall, suited up in his usual attire. Dressed for the occasion, words aren't able to describe his beauty. You try not to let your brain be dazzled by how incredibly handsome he looks. He is wearing a dress shirt, in the deep color of wine that complements his eyes, dress pants hugging his long legs, not to mention the open collar, and no tie. He looks like a long, lean Lothario.
At that your eyes drop down to the floor, specifically the now stained carpet, your hands wrenching the end of your hoodie to distract yourself from the piercing rubies that haunts your dreams.
You build up some courage, enough of it to lift your head to continue what you came here to do, so you open your mouth, and drop a few IQs while you’re at it. “The m-music is loud and m’tryin’ to sleep,'' you mumble, noting how Kirishima leans down to make up the words you are saying over the sound of the blaring music while Bakugou narrows his eyes at you as if disregarding his sight will make him hear you better. “So, if you could turn down the heat, that’d be,”
“You squiffed?” The blond grunts, leaning his face close to yours to inspect it, and he catches a whiff of alcohol in your breath, his eyebrows furrowing at your response. “No I'm not squinting-”
“Yeah you’re drunk alright,” he huffs at your less than intelligent reply, pushing his glass of whiskey - you figure since it's always been his drink of choice - against Kirishima’s chest, telling him to lower the fucking volume and grabs you by your bicep. “C’mon, I’ll take you home.” you stumble at the force used against you, no matter how weak it actually is, before you barely straighten yourself to push his hand away. “I can walk down all by myself, thank you.” Of course you’d expose where you live, you dumbass.
He doesn’t question your integrity, just continues to basically drag you to the elevator before pushing your apartment door open when you choose your floor, irked to find your misplaced trust in the people of the complex by not locking your door after leaving. He barges into your bedroom and tells you to change out of your fucked up pants and proceeds to saunter to your kitchen to get you water, eyeing the boxes that he comes across during that small trip.
He stands awkwardly by the door when he sees you standing in the middle of the bedroom, sifting through countless moving boxes with your pants on the floor, thrown next to a pile of clothes that he can only assume that its supposed to be your laundry ‘basket’, until you opt against wearing any since you can't seem to find anything to replace them. And when he asks you if you just moved in, his expression sours when you shake your head no and explain to him that you’ve been living for months in this space, after chugging that cup of water like you’ve been parched for days.
“Birthday party?” You ask out of the blue as you play with the strings of your hoodie, your ears perking up at the confirmation hum you receive. “Hmm, thas’cool… I-I guess.”
Bakugou’s impassive as he gently pushes you onto your bed, eyes meeting yours as he covers you up with your blanket. “Get some rest, I’m leaving.” He said, slowly stalking away from you and barely reaching your door as your big mouth talks on its own. Your body sitting up and facing his retreating back.
“That's what you always do, you always leave”, you utter and you see him stiffen his shoulders before he spins to face you, so fast you almost want to check up on him about getting a whiplash.
“Hah?” it's one syllable, but it shakes your very core, that one sound making you almost shake, overwhelmed by the amount of emotions, the amount of pain that one sound has. He steps closer to your bed, the stomps of his feet sounding like gun shots in your ear, and you pathetically lift up the blanket to cover yourself up, cowering behind it like it's some pseudo shield that might protect you from him.
“I’m the one that leaves?” he growls at you, his eyes sizing you up when you react to his forceful approach, leaning back to look down on you, but his lips are still curled in a frown, he tries to hold himself from blowing up at you, his feelings oddly enough still raw in his chest the moment he lay eyes on you the first time since you left, threw him away and walked away, probably finding someone better, probably finding someone who you tolerated, unlike himself, but when he sees you straighten up your back to rebuttal him, an automatic response to whenever he raised his voice at you from all those years ago, he knows he is in for a fight.
He snarls when you nod at him, your eyes hard and glaring up at him, not knowing that your silence is by your better judgement since you don't trust your voice, knowing it’ll fail you, probably crack and show him how much he actually is affecting you by his closed off posture and demeaning look down at your frame.
“Real fuckin’ rich of ya, y/n.” He snaps back, his hands brought up to his hair, tugging at it. “As if you didn’t pack your shit,” he kicks at yet another cardboard box fucking spewed in your room, noting its heavy weight when it didn't move but an inch by his action. “Dropped your keys by the fuckin’ door,” as an emphasis, he throws your apartment key at you, making sure it doesn’t actually hit you, but falls onto your lap. “And left. Without a single fuckin’ word, like I'm some lowlife who didn't deserve an explanation, like I didn't deserve anything! And-” that hurt, goddamn it.
Exhaling deeply, he focuses on how your eyes look a little less glossed over, a little more sober, but holding fear, and he almost steps back and out when he looks at how you’re fighting tears, almost wanting to bust his own kneecaps than to see you like this, always wanting nothing for you but to be happy, to never upset about anything no matter how small it might be.
Then why did you leave him? Left him to drown by his lonesome self, waves of his insecurities and sorrow crashing into him, pulling him even further down to his inevitable doom.
Despite the fact that you both yearn for each other, long to feel one another, engulf yourselves in the others presence. You both stand your ground, eyes glaring despite the emotions hidden behind them, mouths shut and curled into ugly scowls regardless of the words you wish to speak to each other, whispers of promises into each other's ears about being together forever, in spite of not knowing what the future holds.
Bakugou breathes out again, recalling all those months worth of coping mechanisms to exercise when placed in anger inducing situations like this one, the time in therapy spent to better himself, to control himself, to be the best version of himself, for you, hoping that one day you’ll pity him enough to want to come back, knowing full well he would never hold a grudge against you and welcome you back with open arms, intending to never repeat whatever it is he did that made you think of him as so unbearable you couldn't spent another day with him.
You on the other hand, are barely holding in the tears, wanting him to just leave your sight, so you can go back to the world of denial where he didn't look like straight out of a magazine, looking as captivating as always, as if your absence did not have an effect on the hero, of course it wouldn't, why would a quirkless extra have an effect on the great Katsuki Bakugou, that's what he used to call them, right?
“Just leave, Bakugou-” his ears pick up the way your voice breaks at his name, the way you utter it sounds so horrendous, because you aren’t meant to call him Bakugou, you’re meant to call him Katsuki, Katsu, Suki, your Suki. Not- “I hate you.”
The room suddenly spirals. The floor panels misalign themselves into zigzags. Bakugo’s eyes shatter like a glass window. He tries to hold himself against the tears that threaten to fall, stomach wrenching as if reaching from inside of his body, but it’s useless. He brings his hand up close to his chest and sinks his head, letting the words overtake him.
Oblivious to his internal struggle, you pile whatever courage you have left in another attempt to ask him to leave, aware that your body wouldn’t aid you in pushing him away physically, you open your mouth, only to gasp after a moment of silence when he pounces on you and grabs you by the neck, sliding a hand behind your head and leaning your face impossibly closer to his “you fuckin’ hate me? show me you hate me then,”
Then he's pressing his lips against yours, your half foggy mind all too surprised by the flow of motion you can only try to keep up with his feverish kisses, you try to pull away, to push him away, to no avail, Bakugou only stopping his assault on your lips to growl at them again “Show me then, hah?”
But he wouldn't even let you, his grasp on your neck loosening to circle around your back to push you to him even more. His kisses get more and more aggressive, trying his best to show you how much he was hurt by what you said, by what you did, after all this time, almost begging you to not let him have to voice out whatever he’s feeling because he would do so much of a worse job than he is doing now.
The hands you placed on his chest in a failed attempt to push him away are now just placed over his pecs, welcoming their warmth and the way they flex under your touch, your right hand clenching over where his thumping heart is, and he almost sighs in relief, the movement feeling like it holds together all the broken pieces of his heart to make it whole again.
Almost like that gesture calmed him down, Bakugou’s rough touches start to soften, very caring as they glide to your hips before sliding underneath your - oh my God it's your special edition Dynamight hoodie! His amused chuckle tickles your lips as he pulls away when he feels you stiffen at the realization, barely letting you breathe in ease until he places his lips against your ear. “Love how m’still the only one sprawled over yer tits.”
“But I still want the real thing, lemme see ‘em, hm?” And just before throwing a dumb retort and embarrasing yourself even further, the article is tugged eagerly off of your body and thrown haphazardly on the floor. Earning yourself a low whistle when he realises you’re wearing nothing underneath. Bakugou all but shoves you onto the bed, spreading your legs when you try to rub them against each other for any friction, wedging his body neatly between them as his teeth gently bite your soft buds, pulling them slightly before captivating the nipple entirely.
His tongue flicks against your hardening nipple while keeping a watchful eye at the sinful expressions your face makes, his one hand toying with and twisting the other nipple while the other slides down to tease your needy cunt, pressing his fingers against your -fucking soaked- panties, swearing under his breath at the feeling of your walls trying to clench around his fingers just from that one movement. Sitting on his haunches, he lifts your hips with ease to pull your panties right off, eyes travelling between your heaving chest and your exposed pussy. Before lowering himself and finding comfort in biting and sucking your nipples again.
Bakugou’s smirk grows with your moans as his tongue dances over your sensitive nipples, he presses his finger against your walls, and you immediately keen at the prodding feeling that almost feels foreign after all this time apart. His thumb pushing your pussy lip to the side to see you suck his finger in like the good girl he knew you always were.
“Ba-ba-ba,” you struggle to talk, your drool collecting at your lips, stopping you from forming any words as you feel a breeze hit your spit covered tits, whining at the feeling and wanting him to pull your nipples in the warm cavern of his mouth again. Bakugou’s eyes focus on the spit line connecting his bottom lip to your nipple before disconnecting it to smash his lips against yours in an effort to shut your blabbering up.
“Ba-ba, what? y’better not be callin’ me Bakugou with my fingers deep in yer pussy baby, its Katsuki for you, yeah?” he taunts with a fake pout that immediately turns into a grin at the way you hold your pathetic sobs, pressing another finger in your tight cunt, reveling in the wet sounds your pussy makes as he thrusts his fingers in and out of it, soaking his fingers in your slick as he curls them, eager to hear the squelching sounds it would make when his cock is shoved deep inside you. “Or better yet, lemme hear you say Suki, hmm?”
“Suki- p-please, eat me out” you throw your head back and bring your hands down to play with your clit, showing him where you want his lips to be, as if the blond doesn't already know where it is, and he scoffs at the thought, slapping your hand away and giving another slap to your clit, earning a moan from you from the sharp pleasurable pain.
“Yea, yea I fuckin’ know already, needy slut,” he growls, keeping eye contact as he circles your clit with his tongue before sloppily eating out your cunt, making a mess of both drool and your arousal, mumbling “my needy slut.” to himself, and you do hear it, yet you brush it off with the thought that your lust must be messing with your brain.
Your chest still flutters at his words and your walls clench in on his fingers as he curls them again in a way you didn’t know would make you yelp like it did. He thrives off of how your body responses so easily to him, your back arching and the squelching getting louder as his fingers pick up speed, his tongue so skillful in drawing circles around your clit before sucking it again. A whine escapes you when he draws his head away from you, only for you to see the way his eyes darkens, his chin glistening from your arousal when it catches the light.
“Let go for me princess,” he whispers uncharacteristically, making you question if the glint in his eyes is from his desire for you or something else. “Lemme see you fall apart for me, alright?” the way he’s almost begging you to come undone for him takes you by surprise, and your body curls in on itself so fast, not realizing your orgasm was creeping up on you until it hits you. The knot in your stomach breaks as you gush around his fingers, white crossing your vision as he slows his pace to help you come down from your high.
Your shuddering body lays on your bed, eyes unwavering as they meet Katsuki’s, his fingers stuffed in his mouth as he moans around them at your taste. It's all a blur after seeing that unravel, and you’re so woozy that you don’t register him discarding his clothes until he lays above you. Placing himself between your legs as he pumps his cock, hardened from seeing you fall apart on his tongue and fingers, his tip leaking precum and burning a bright red.
His movement is almost too quick for you as he dips his head into your leaking hole before pulling right back, a breathless chuckle escaping him when you whine and roll your hips and try to suck him in again, wanting to feel the stretch of him inside of you.
“Didja wanna say somethin’ princess?” he taunts you, one of his hands holding you down by your stomach while the other is wrapped around his length, teasing you in the ways that he knows drive you crazy, he leans in, using the tip of his cock to spread your pussy lips open and running it along your slit to coat it with your arousal.
“Katshu, p-please I-” you hiccup, your fists tightening on your bed sheet as you try to rock your hips up get more than just his leaking tip, but your begging is always interrupted when he isn't hearing what he wants you to say.
“Say you love me.”
You freeze at his demand, your widening eyes looking up at him before you pout your lips, not thinking about surrendering to him, no matter how much you want your cunt stuffed full of him right now.
“I don’love yooou-” you gasp as katsuki’s grip onto your waist tightens and you feel as he gives a thrust into your sopping cunt, arching your back at the burning stretch of being filled up by his thick cock. Katsuki’s hand traces down your left thigh before cupping behind your knee, hiking your leg up and out, close to your chest to expose more of yourself to him, wanting nothing more than to see his dick seething in and out of your tight pretty pussy, and by almost muscle memory, you did the same thing with your right leg, replacing his hands with your own, presenting yourself to him.
“Y’see that? Fuckin’ know you like the back of m’hand, y’think someones gonna- ah, take the fucking time to work you like I did?” he's right, absolutely right, he ruined you for any other potential lovers and he loved it with every fiber in his being, knowing this means you’re always going to be wrapped around his finger. You moan as he pushes more of himself into you, bottoming out and holding one of your tits and squeezing when he feels your walls do the same to his cock.
You hate it, after all this time, you’re still a blubbering mess the second he was one fucking inch deep in your pussy, sucking him in and clawing at his back begging for more. No self respect, no dignity, you hate it, how come after all this time he gets to come here and fuck you like you belong to him, like you’ve belonged to him despite everything that has happened.
You only realize that your eyes are closed when Katsuki’s breath hits your face, and you open them wide, noting how wet your lashes have gotten from your tears, only for him to kiss at the tears gliding along your right temple and licking the ones on your left. He breathes out a chuckle and when he leans to look at your eyes, the humor and menace you expect to see in his eyes are nowhere to be found, clouded by a solemn look instead.
“What? Yer cryin on me now, huh? Y’think a few tears are stoppin’ me?” His voice is masked so well, because he sounds like he was simply enjoying a game, like an imp that had branched from a demon. “C’mon, not gonna tell the birthday boy you love’em?”
“I don't love you, I hate you, h-hate you-” you keen as drool pools at your lips, your body betraying you as it shakes from pleasure, letting go of your legs to wrap them around his slim waist, to bring him in closer, if that was even possible, stopping his deep thrusts that were brushing up against your cervix, it feels pathetic, denying him the pleasure of telling him you love him while clinging onto him like he's your last breath of fresh air, because in a way, you feel like he is, like him leaving would just collapse your lungs and stop your heart from beating, you know that he’s gonna leave you. While your spent body would lay on your bed and you'd cry because you didn't tell him you love him, yet you wouldn’t ask him to stay, knowing deep down that you don't deserve it, you don't deserve him.
You feel his weight on top of you as he rests his elbows by your head, his lips brushing against your ear as he repeats again with every shallow thrust into your warm insides, his cock twitching from time to time in your walls. “You love me.” he says it once, twice, thrice. Every time his voice lowers more and more to a broken whisper, almost a plea instead of the cocky taunt he started off with.
Your legs are starting to ache from the grip they have around him, so you loosen up, your mind easy since his thrusts haven’t been rough nor painful. And when you do, you notice two things immediately, first, your thighs are so soaked from how he's making you feel, probably ruining your bedsheet at this point, second, he pushed his chest away from yours to look you directly in the eyes, one hand molding around your thigh to keep it from wrapping around him again while the other is placed on your stomach, his thumb inching closer and closer to your clit, wanting to toy with it, toy with you, but not ready to give you any satisfaction until you admit to him, please just tell him, that you do still love him. All insecurities, all battle scars, all emotional constipation as layers he covers himself with, that no one gives a fuck to peel off, to see who he really was, except you.
His red eyes lock onto yours as your chest heaves with breathless sobs at the lost of his warmth, and when you think he's lowering himself back down, he pulls out suddenly, sending a  shiver down your spine as you gasp, now feeling like you're frozen over, your tears coming from lack of both pleasure and warmth.
Suddenly your face is met with the pillow and you feel his hands on your hips as he lifts them up and off the bed, your half intoxicated, half aroused mind barely registering that you’ve been flipped over on your stomach until you feel his cock prodding at your cunt, easily sliding in like they’ve been made to be warmed up in there, when you know Katsuki would argue that your pussy was made just for him and to warm his dick.
He presses his chest against your back, pushing you onto the bed as he thrusts his hips roughly, pulling out fully before seething himself right back in, your moans and whimpers muffled by your pillow from being pushed down by his hand as his other holds your hips firmly.
Then what happened next probably shocked him more than you, despite how delirious you’ve become due to his relentless thrusting, his dripping tears feel cool on your bare warm shoulder, one by one as his groans and moans turn into strangled sobs, before Katsuki digs his teeth into that shoulder, to both hear you scream and to muffle his cries from you.
“because I love you” he sobs, detaching his teeth from their grip and kissing the bite marks before resting his forehead against it, but his thrusts never cease, getting sloppier, as if the confession is pushing him off the edge. Dragging the tip of his nose from your bitten and bleeding shoulder to the back of your ear, his own face flush and warm against you as he breathes harshly against your ear and kisses along it.
“So-” he moans again, the hand behind your neck now turning your face so he could see your fucked out expression, the tears streaming down your face and the drool that pools under your cheeks, with your tongue lolled out and your eyes barely focusing on his form.
“You better say you do too, becau-”
“I love you.” you gush, like saying it is a breath of fresh air, your eyes never leaving his teary ones, your gaze so intense and fixated on him with no regards to the way the snapping of his hips against yours is shaking your entire body against the bed.
With new found vigor from your confession, Katsuki grabs onto the meat of your ass, hammering into you from behind with force that pushes you against the bed even further, your pulled hair jerking your head back so he can listen to the lewd noises you are making, long forgotten the will to cover your pleasure and hiding your moans.
Your ass heavily slaps against his thighs as he grabs your hips with both hands and pounds into your sopping wet cunt, relishing in the way you’re begging for him. “Y’like it when I fuck you baby, hmm? Like it when I stuff you so fuckin’ full of me?” He growls, feeling you push your ass back every time you repeat ‘yes’ to his questions. “Yes, yes love it, love you, please please don’t stop, please ‘Suki. Yes, gonna cum ‘Suki please” you weep, your head pounding from the grip he had on your hair and your eyes crossing as you feel his thrusts stutter, getting sloppier when you bounce your ass against him, his hand coming down and slapping it.
“That's fuckin’ right, cum on this cock, c’mon baby” he brings four of his fingers to rub your clit with urgency, and you can’t help but arch your back as your orgasm hits you again, screeching as you feel your walls tightening on him, squeezing him for what he’s worth. “F-fuck ah, y-you’re so- Fuck” his heavy weight falls on you as he fills you to the brim with his milky seed, forehead pressed against your shoulder as he rocks his hips against you, pushing more of his load inside before slowly pulling out, gaze flutters down to where your bodies were once joined, seeing your mixed arousal seeping out of your hole and he has half a mind to push it back in with his fingers.
But he flips you over effortlessly, the sight of your crossed out eyes and wet cheeks squeezing his chest at the realization he might’ve been too rough on you, so he wipes your cheek with the palm of his hands and revels in the way you lean towards him, turning your face to kiss his palm. “Say it again.” barely a whisper, as you flip his hand and kiss the back of it as well, and he almost repeats himself, thinking you didn’t hear him, but your hands reach up and cup his face, bringing him towards you. “I love you Katsuki” and goddamn if that wasn’t the most beautiful thing you’ve ever spoken. “Again,” “I love you, Katsuki” “Again,” you giggle, and he knows that's probably what angels sound like.
Your thumb brushes over his warm cheeks, red from showing vulnerability, and you pull him even closer, “Happy birthday, ‘Suki.”
“Yea,” He breaths out, his lips barely brushing against your bitten and bruised ones. “It really fuckin’ is.”

Happy birthday, Finnegan.
I was writing this in the office at work the other day and my manager asked what I was doing and I answered that I was writing a story for my friend for their birthday because I didn't want to tell her I was writing fanfic. So, in true being friends with Lucy style, this is two days late. Sorry! No matter what, the creation of this character deserves to be celebrated.
This is set in an AU universe where the cubs are out.
CW: Food talk and a brief mention of alcohol
Rating: G
Please message me if I missed any content warnings or you think I need to change the ratings.
All characters (except Bailey, she's mine) belong to @lumosinlove.
“Friday night and the lights are lowwww, Looking out for a place to goooo,” Finn spun around the island, the wooden spoon at his lips providing the perfect microphone for his rendition. He halted in front of Logan, laughing at what he could tell was a disgruntled expression despite most of his face being covered by the hoodie he’d pulled tight around it, his hands covering the bottom half. “It’s my birthday, come and dance with me,” Finn pleaded, tugging at the overhang of Logan’s sleeve.
“Non, it is too early,” Logan grumbled. “Dance with Knutty.”
“Knutty is busy.” Finn threw a glance over his shoulder at Leo, smiling at the sight of his boyfriend humming to himself as he moved gracefully at the stove. Leo turned to meet his gaze, his damp hair forming golden curls that Finn thought made him look like a cherub.
“Here,” Leo tipped his head at the freshly prepared coffee. “Coffee’s ready, you can caffeinate him. Just needs sugar.”
Finn pressed his lips to Logan's forehead. "If bring you coffee will you dance with me after?" Logan huffed but nodded, pushing his hands through the holes in his sleeves to receive the steaming cup.
"Okay, deal, but I'm starting the song again." Finn's grin was met with a low groan. After drawing the drink out as long as he could, technically, Logan did fulfil his promise, standing to reluctantly move his body to the music.
Finn saw the exact moment Logan chose mischief, his bright green eyes lighting up even more than usual. "Catch me and I'll dance with you properly."
Finn raised an eyebrow, matching Logan's fast walk around the island. He was the first to risk Leo's wrath, picking up the speed to a jog, and took advantage of his longer arms to close the gap.
"Got' cha," Finn grasped Logan around the waist, Logan's head tipping back in an uncharacteristically bright laugh as Finn reeled him in. "You are the dancing queen, young and sweet," Finn sang loudly, spinning Logan away from him and pulling him back when their fingertips threatened to split.
Logan placed his palm on Finn's chest, letting himself be rocked to the music. "You should be singing this to Leo, not me."
Finn glanced down at Logan and despite the fact no words were vocalised in that moment, their eyes said a lot. In an almost synchronised moment they turned their gaze to Leo.
"Nutter butter," Finn said. "It's your turn to be serenaded."
"Oh no, what a shame, breakfast is ready," Leo smirked, pouring a generous helping of maple syrup over one of the bagel stacks; Logan's. Finn considered protesting, but the sight of his own plate was too tempting.
"The serenading will recommence at a later time," Finn insisted, grabbing one of the plates and carrying it through to the dining table. They didn't eat here often, preferring either the island or the sofa, but today it had been decorated with balloons and presents had been piled at the end.
***
"That was amazing, thanks Le." Finn already missed the stack of bagels; bacon and a poached egg layered between them, and dripping with hollandaise sauce. "Can I know what you've got planned now?"
"No problem, anything for the birthday boy." Leo swallowed a bite, sliding one of the wrapped boxes towards Finn. "We told you, it's a surprise. You can open presents though."
Finn worked his way through the gifts, too many of them from Leo and Logan. There was nothing extravagant but they seemed endless and each one reminded him how much they knew him. His favourite chapstick. A crate of beer from a craft supplier he really enjoyed. A set of massage oils and a promise to help him use them. Some monogrammed golf balls. And his favourite, a handwritten letter from the both of them that he would treasure forever. He read the cards from the rest of the team through damp eyes.
“Can you tell me the plan now?” Finn asked the question again once he’d worked his way through the gifts and the cards. Logan dragged his lips against his teeth, as if he was physically keeping the words from spilling from his mouth.
“Don’t give us those bambi eyes,” Leo shook his head, throwing a balled up napkin in Logan’s direction, the item hitting him square in the forehead. “Don’t you dare tell him.”
“I didn’t say anything!”
“I can tell you want to,” Leo retorted. “We have to clear up first. Put the music back on. I want to dance now.” It was much later that Finn came to recognise this for the distraction technique that it was, hence the three of them were arguing over the lyrics to Montero when the sound of the doorbell rang through the apartment.
Finn opened the door, a bounce still in his step and swaying his hips to an imaginary beat. He blinked at the figure in front of him, closing the door for a second before opening again. “Alex!” Finn pulled his brother into a tight hug, slapping his hand on the broad of his back. “Sorry, I thought I was hallucinating. What are you doing here?”
“I’ve come to see my baby brother on his birthday, obviously,” Alex laughed, squeezing Finn back until he struggled out of his hold.
“But,” Finn spluttered. “You were in Florida yesterday? I saw your Insta story.”
“I caught the first flight this morning, I’ve got to be back tomorrow for a photoshoot.”
“That’s crazy,” Finn said, shaking his head. “You’re crazy.” He tugged Alex inside, leading him down the hall into the kitchen. “Look who’s here!”
“Hey Alex,” Logan thrust his fist for Alex to bump his fist against. Finn looked between Leo and Logan, both of their faces showing no sign of surprise.
“Did you know?!”
***
It took a while for Leo and Logan to convince Finn they didn’t need to come along and he should spend time with Alex, but now they were alone, he was realising exactly how much he had missed his brother. The conversation flowed easily, Alex having almost an entire lifetime of practise at following Finn’s leaps in topics.
“So, I booked us in for a pottery class,” Alex glanced at Finn briefly before setting his eyes back on the road. “I thought you’d like that. It’s very tactile, y’know?”
“Nice,” Finn grinned. “I’ve always wanted to do that. I hope you brought spare clothes with you, because things are about to get messy.”
It was true. Finn had binge watched The Great Pottery Throw Down, so he knew learning to make even the simplest of things would be more difficult than it looked, but somehow the two of them managed to get the clay everywhere.
“Alex, that's too fast!” Bailey, the instructor warned, but it was too late. The clay sloped to the side, thinning out as it flew off the wheel and hit Finn on the cheek.
“Oops,” Alex grimaced. “Sorry, bud.”
Finn sent a mock scowl in his brother’s direction as he peeled the clay from his skin, dumping it back on Alex’s wheel. However, O’Hara’s were nothing if not perfectionists, and the two of them were determined to create something good. Neither of their first bowls came out right; Finn’s was too tall and thin, Alex’s was short and thick. When they tried again, Finn overcorrected, creating something that resembled Alex’s first. Alex’s second attempt was going well until it spontaneously collapsed.
“Third time’s the charm,” Alex huffed, manipulating his clay back into a lump to try again. He was right, giving a triumphant smile as he watched the grey ball transform. His work wasn’t as good as the ones filling the shelves opposite, their price tags indicative of the skill that had gone into them, but it was relatively smooth and definitely a bowl.
Finn whistled through his teeth, admiring Alex’s work. He laughed as he looked down at his own third endeavour, a small stumpy thing that could perhaps hold five Cheetos. “I tried.”
“Hey, no,” Alex argued. “Give it another go if you want. You’re nearly there.”
Finn rolled his shoulders back, pursuing his lips with determination. Alex watched Finn push his foot on the pedal again, his elbows tucked into his torso as he worked the clay.
“That’s it, apply a little more pressure on the bottom than the top.” Alex encouraged him. Finn smiled, his brother was always his biggest supporter. It reminded him of the time Alex had watched him tie and re-tie his shoelaces over and over again until he’d finally mastered it and could prove to their parents that he was ready for that new pair of sneakers.
“I guess I’m not needed here,” Bailey joked. “ You’re looking good, Finn. How about you two wash up and I’ll get those mugs you wanted to paint. We’ll get these in the kiln later and they’ll be ready for collection in a few days.”
Painting the mugs was a much more relaxing process, both Finn and Alex decorating two mugs each, one for each of their partners. Bailey sat with them and Finn watched in awe as she quickly made stencils whenever they needed assistance getting the designs in their heads onto the ceramic. By the time they’d finished, the three of them had come up with an elaborate plan for Alex to get back at his team mate for filling his hotel room with balloons and Finn concluded that Bailey was the coolest person ever.
“Damn,” Alex glanced at his phone. “It’s nearly 4. Let’s get you back to your boys before I start getting threatening messages from Tremblay.”
“Trust me,” Finn snorted. “It’s Knutty you need to be scared of.”
“Crazy goalies, am I right?”
***
“Wait, why are we at the aquarium?”
“You’ll see.” Alex’s smirk was infuriating. Finn craned his head forward, excitement bubbling inside him. Alex rolled his eyes as the engine rumbled to a stop. “Go on then,” he said, tilting his head towards a modern looking building, all glass and sharp angles.
“You’re coming as well?” Finn asked when Alex slid out the car too, locking the sleek black rental behind him. “Not that I mind.I just thought you had a flight to get?”
Alex shook his head. “ No, I’m not staying for long. I want to see your reaction though.”
“My reaction to what? We all know I love the aquarium but I’m not going to explode or anything.”
“I told you, you’ll see.” There was that smirk again.
Finn held in the urge to stamp his foot. “Urgh! You’re so annoying.”
“Love you too,” Alex laughed, pushing through a set of tall glass doors. A sarcastic quip rested on Finn’s tongue, but it shattered as he looked up to see Leo and Logan waiting in the entrance, backpacks slung over their shoulders.
“Lo! Knutty!” Finn jogged the short distance, “I missed you.”
“Glad to know I’m such good company,” Alex deadpanned.
“It’s only been a few hours,” Leo chuckled, accepting Finn’s hug. Finn smiled, lifting his head for Leo to place a soft kiss on his lips. “Did you have a good day?”
“Yeah, we went to this pottery studio, and then we got burgers and shakes like we used to when we were kids,” Finn nodded. Oh! I made you something.” He turned to Alex who had stepped into place beside him, holding his hands out. Alex grunted, but pulled the tote bag from his shoulder, placing two carefully wrapped items into his hands. “Open it!”
“Alright, give us a chance, Harz,” Logan laughed, tearing at the delicate tissue. Leo was much more methodical, peeling back the layers neatly enough the paper could probably be re-used.
“Did you do this?” Leo looked between the mug and Finn. He ran his fingers over the shiny glaze, a dark blue with tiny white stars scattered over. Inside, a moon phase created a border around the rim.
“I didn’t make the mug. We made bowls, but they won’t be ready for collection for a few days. I did paint it though. With some help from stencils. There’s a little note in the paper somewhere.”
“I couldn’t bring you the real ones, but hopefully these will do,” Leo read, his voice cracking slightly towards the end of the sentence. “Finn.”
Logan whined, the sound curling in the back of his throat. “It’s your birthday, you’re not supposed to give us things.” The mug he held had been painted white and the words ‘sweet like honey’ written over it in Finn’s neatest attempt at cursive along with several bees.
“Do you like it?” Finn rocked on his feet and Alex knocked their shoulders together, a small gesture of reassurance. “Look it’s you,” he pointed out a bee that had a small red cap on its head. The French left Logan’s mouth so quickly Finn couldn’t even begin to parse the words, let alone make any sort of effort to translate them.
“He’s mad that you are making him emotional in public,” Leo provided at Finn’s distressed frown.
“Aww, you do like it,” Finn grinned, wrapping his arms around Logan.
“Be careful! You’re going to break it.”
Alex cleared his throat. “As beautiful as this is, I’m going to have to go soon, so if we could do the big reveal?”
“Alex,” Finn almost growled. “I swear I will phone Nat - wait, what big reveal?”
Leo swung a backpack off his shoulder. Finn only now realised he was carrying two, one of which belonged to Finn. “We’re staying at the aquarium!”
“Well, yeah? Why else would we be here?”
“Non, Harzy, “ Logan laughed. “We’re sleeping at the aquarium. Overnight. Under the shark tunnel to be precise.”
“Oh my fucking God!” Finn couldn’t contain his grin as pulled Leo into the hug too, “Is this a joke? This better not be a joke.”
“Fish, there are children around,” Leo scolded. “And no, it’s not a joke. That would be mean.”
Finn let his boyfriends go, spinning around to face Alex. “Al, are you sure you don’t want to stay? This is going to be so cool!”
“I really have got to go soon,” Alex shrugged, a soft smile on his lips. He jerked his head in Logan’s direction. “Somebody count how many times Finn screams though, please.”
***
“Look!” Finn gasped, pointing up at the glass tunnel above where the three of them lay in their sleeping bags. “It’s a nurse shark.”
Logan rolled over, propping himself on his elbow and looking at Leo. “We’re not getting any sleep tonight are we?”
“I don’t think so.” Leo chuckled, shaking his head. He pointed to the tunnel. “What’s the weird looking one, Fish?”
“That’s a wobbegong, they blend into the sand,” Finn answered, curling into Leo’s side. Logan lay back down behind him, having offered Finn the middle spot for tonight. “This has been the best birthday,” he sighed happily.
“Happy birthday, Harzy,” Logan squeezed his hand through the layers of their bags. “Tell us more about the sharks.”

You hated winter.
You supposed people found something magical about the view of fluffy white flakes catching the light as they drifted down from the sky and created a thick white blanket across the ground and trees. However, the fairy tale description was only true when observed from the other side of a window where the protection of four walls and a fireplace could block out the harsh reality.
“Don’t forget the shopping on your way back.” Your grandmother’s raspy voice cuts through the morning silence as you go through the tedious process of bundling up against the frigid weather you knew you’d be facing as soon as you stepped outside. The elderly woman was sitting in her favorite spot on the sofa, lap covered by one of the many blankets she’d made over the years. You grandfather shuffled into the room as if on cue with two piping hot mugs of tea. He hands one to his wife before settling happily into the place next to her.
“I never do.” Your words come out harsher than you’d intended, but your grandparents pay you no mind. They were either used to your attitude or too wrapped up in their own happily ever after. You finish off your ridiculously bulky outfit by shoving a knit cap over your head and then heading out into the cold.
You hated your job
You knew you should be grateful that you had the luxury of owning an apothecary. It was the type of establishment that would never want for business. There was also a certain pride in being able to provide people with medicines to relieve them of their aches and pains, allergies, and illnesses. The difficulty was in being surrounded by the memories of your parents and the perfect life they’d lived, as well as the constant reminder that you’d been robbed of the chance to experience that type of fantasy.
Trudging through the deep wet snow had made you a few minutes late, and there were already a few customers waiting outside the tiny shop you’d inherited by the time you arrived. You apologize politely as you unlock the door and let them inside, shedding the layers of your winter clothes as quickly as you can so that you can get to work. It was always a little busier in the winter months, but finding the right remedy for each person was something you’d gotten good at over time. Most customers came and went without much trouble, but assisting the regulars who’d known you since childhood was always a bit awkward. You did your best not to notice the pity and judgement on their faces as you prepared their orders with the same forced pleasantness as you did for everyone else.
You hated shopping
Having a job that earned enough wages to properly provide for yourself and your family was a blessing most people in your city could not enjoy. Your parents had always made sure to remind you of that fact whenever they came home with baskets full of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, bread, and sometimes even meat. As an adult, you still appreciated the fact that you did not have to know hunger, but it was always such a hassle to deal with the crowded market after getting off work.
When your parents had been alive, they had loved going out to run these types of errands together. It had always surprised you how they would choose to spend more time together even after living and working with each other every single day. They never seemed to get tired of each other, and you could remember vividly the way they’d smiled at each other with pure happiness and love in their gaze. It was hard to forget when you saw the same blissful look on every couple you happened to encounter as you went about your day. It made you feel so incredibly alone sometimes, but you did your best to bury those emotions deep down out of fear that they would consume you completely.
“How much is the bread today?” You ask the baker once you make it to the counter through the throngs of people. He tells you the price and begins to wrap up your order when you agree to it.
“You’re lucky,” he tells you conversationally. “This is the last loaf of the day.”
“Tch!” A frustrated sound comes from behind you and you turn around instinctively to make sure nothing was wrong. Standing next to you was a grouchy looking man with silky black hair, styled in an undercut. The long, soft looking strands on the top of his head came down to frame his face, drawing attention to the most important feature; his eyes. You notice right away they are both the identical shade of gray, which told you a lot about him already.
“Were you waiting in line?” You ask curiously even though meeting his sharp gaze directly was a bit intimidating. He regards you critically for a moment before sighing and looking away, probably forming his own judgments based on the incorrect story told by your own eyes.
“It’s fine,” his tone of voice is flat and a little dismissive. “I should’ve gotten here earlier.” He turns to walk away but something makes you call out to stop him.
“Wait,” you give him the friendliest smile you can muster before looking to the baker. “Please, wrap this up for him instead. I insist.” The baker shrugs, not really bothered by the change as long as he got his payment. The scowl on the man’s face gave way to surprise, and you thought the softer look suited him much better. You could see that he was preparing to reject your kindness, so you mutter a quick goodbye before turning away and blending in with the crowd.
You hated your eyes
In the world you lived in, everything revolved around a person’s eyes. They were more than just a mere window into the soul, they were also a glimpse into the future. As a child, you could recall the excitement of your friends as they studied the mismatched colors of each other’s irises, speculating wildly about which shade truly belonged to them and which was borrowed from a stranger that they were destined to meet sometime in the future. Their enthusiasm had been contagious in the beginning, and you’d enjoyed listening to people discuss their predictions about the background, appearance, and personality of their future partner.
“Did you get everything on the list?” Your grandfather asks as he takes the basket of food from you once you finally return home. The walk back from the market had been miserable. Your feet were cold and wet from sloshing through the snow, but the rest of you was warm and sweaty from the exertion of hauling the purchases all the way back while wearing so many thick layers.
“They were out of bread,” You inform him while shrugging out of your coat. A look of displeasure passed over his face but vanished just as quickly when your grandmother called to him from the kitchen. You were relieved that she was volunteering to make dinner this time, because the exhaustion from your day was starting to catch up with you.
You head into the bathroom, ready to warm up with a hot shower and put on a fresh pair of clothes while the meal was prepared. As you wait for the water from the tap to heat up, you catch a glimpse of your reflection in the mirror. Usually you avoided looking at your face for too long, but every now and then you decided to stare back at yourself for a moment. You frown as you meet the gaze of the two identical eyes that you’d be born with. They looked mockingly back at you from the glass, their dull gray hue like a running joke that you’d never found remotely funny.
Washing away the grime of the day helped clear your head of negative thoughts, and soon your mind drifted back to the man you’d helped at the market. The memory of his eyes reminded you that you had made the right decision. He was the one who had someone important waiting for him back at home, possibly even children that needed to be fed and taken care of. You and your grandparents would be just fine as you always had, even if there was a spark of jealousy in you that the man got to have the type of wholesome future that you could never enjoy.
You hated soulmates
The idea of having the comfort of knowing there was someone out there born specifically to fill your life with joy, support, and love was an overwhelming one. It was hard for you to really imagine what it must be like for people to be filled with that nervous anticipation every time they got the opportunity to meet someone new. You’d had secondhand experiences as you watched friends and acquaintances around you find their destinies in one another, but while those meetings spelled out the beginning of something wonderful for them, it only served to make you feel the bleakness of your situation more profoundly.
It was extremely rare for someone to be born without a soulmate, and although your parents tried to have a positive outlook, you had still felt the stigma associated with your condition every single day of your life. It had been impossible to escape the stares and gasps of astonishment from both adults and children alike during you school-age years. Most of them had never seen a child your age with two of the same colored eyes, so it was inevitable that you’d garnered quite a bit of unwanted attention. The people you met were merely curious at first, but as you got older the intrigue turned to pity.
As hard as it was to deal with the people around you who knew the truth, meeting strangers was almost worse. Those who still walked around with duel colored eyes held little interest in someone who had seemingly already found their partner, and everyone else was too preoccupied with their own established lives to pay attention to you at all. In the world you lived in, everything revolved around a person’s eyes. Unfortunately, your eyes had landed you into one of the loneliest roles imaginable.
You hated your luck
It should not have surprised you as much as it did when the man from the market walked into your apothecary a few days later, but considering the fact he’d been popping up in your thoughts sporadically ever since the first meeting, it certainly caught you off guard to see his face again. By the way his familiar gray eyes widened upon seeing you standing behind counter, you guessed he hadn’t been expecting to see you again either.
“Hello again,” you smile awkwardly to try and clear the air. You weren’t sure if it would be weird to mention the bread incident or not.
“Hello,” the man nods, his facial features relaxing into a neutral expression. You were glad he didn’t seem to be as agitated as he’d been in the market. “I’m looking for something that might help my mother. She’s recently fallen ill and nothing I do seems to be helping.”
“What are her symptoms?” The question falls naturally from your lips. As the man describes his mother’s condition, you find yourself taking in his appearance in more detail. His black hair looked as soft as you remembered, but now you were noticing other things like the shape of his nose and sharp angle of his jawline. The clothes he wore were on the nicer side, and it made you wonder what he did for a living. His stature was a bit on the shorter side, and although his build was lean, you got the impression that he was healthy and strong.
“Well, it seems like she may have caught a flu,” you explain once the man finishes speaking. You turn to grab a few items from the shelf behind you and place them on the counter. “These should work to control the symptoms and reduce her fever until her body is able to fight off the infection.”
“Thank you,” he sounds genuine as he pulls out some money to pay for the medicine. You accept the payment, taking note of his long, elegant hands and fingers.
“Not at all,” you assure him with an easy smile. “I hope your mother recovers quickly.”
The man nods in gratitude while scooping up the goods he’d purchased in his hands. He seemed to hesitate for a moment before looking back up to catch your gray eyes with his own.
“My name’s Levi, by the way.” The confidence in his voice did not match the anxious set of his features. “We didn’t get to have a proper introduction the other day.”
“O-oh,” there was no way to conceal the shock you felt in that moment. It was out of the ordinary for anyone to give you their name, especially a man who had obviously had his encounter with fate already. You manage to stutter out your own name, wondering if you were having some sort of intensely realistic dream as you watch the man’s lips twitch into the smallest, briefest of smiles.
“A pleasure to meet you,” he repeats your name to himself thoughtfully. “Have a nice day.” With all his business with you completed, he nods his head and exits your shop, leaving you to try and tame the wild racing of your thoughts and heart.
You hated false hope
It was embarrassing how often you had to remind yourself over the next few days that a person simply introducing themselves to you should not be taken as anything more than polite kindness. You had seemingly lost all control of your mind and feelings though, since scarcely a moment went by now without thoughts of Levi sending butterflies fluttering around in your stomach. It didn’t seem fair that you knew so little about him, but you understood that you’d have to be content with the memory of his ghost of a smile and the echo of the way your name had sounded as it escaped his lips. Part of you hoped you’d never see the man again so that you could get over your delusions as quickly and easily as possible, but another part of you longed to bump into him again.
“What are you doing in here?” Your grandmother walked into the bathroom to find you leaning over the sink, eyes wide open and focused so intensely on your reflection in the mirror that you hadn’t even heard her approach.
“Huh?” you whirl around to face her, finally blinking once you realized how tired your eyes were from the thorough examination you’d just given them. “What did it feel like after you met Grandpa?”
Your stomach sank immediately at the pitying look that grew on the old woman’s face. She reaches out to rub your arm sympathetically with a sad smile. “I’m so sorry sweetie,” is all she tells you before changing the subject completely. “Excuse me now, I need to use the restroom.”
“Right, sorry.” You offer a dry laugh as you move out of her way, reality rushing back like a harsh slap to the face. You’d known all along that you’d never really have a soulmate, but it was hard not to have grasped on to the small shred of a possibility. It hadn’t slipped your attention that Levi also had gray eyes, but plenty of people had the same or similar shade. Besides, the likeliness of soulmates having the same exact eye color was even rarer than someone being born without a soulmate at all. You vowed to keep these cold hard truths at the forefront of your mind from now on, and resigned yourself completely to the fate you’d been dealt.
You loved Levi
It had been a whole week since you’d given up the last loaf of bread that had sent your life into a strange whirlwind of new, unexplored emotions. The days between then and the present had been interesting indeed, but now you were determined to go back to life as normal. The weather wasn’t so terrible today, but you still bundled up to prepare yourself for the cold morning walk to the Apothecary. You arrived at the shop with plenty of time to remove the layers of winter clothes and do a quick inventory of items you’d soon need to restock.
It was around lunchtime when you really started to relax back into your routine. The steady flow of customers had helped to keep your mind occupied, and once things slowed down around midday, you picked up a rag and began to wipe down the counters and windows absentmindedly. The sound of the bell above the door alerted you to someone’s arrival and you quickly tossed down the rag and turned to greet them. Once again, you find yourself startled to be standing in the presence of the man from the market.
“Levi,” you mutter his name before shaking out of your daze. “Excuse me,” you look down and apologize in embarrassment. “Um, can I help you with something? Is your mother feeling better?”
“She’s much better, yes. Thank you.” Levi clears his throat awkwardly and you can’t help but think his posture is stiffer than you remember. You wonder again what he did for a living because he seemed to be a bit overdressed for a simple trip to the apothecary. He looked incredibly handsome in any case, and it was doing nothing to help quiet your wandering imagination.
“I’m glad to hear that,” you weren’t sure what else to say. You walk over to the small faucet behind the counter to wash your hands since you’d just been cleaning. The silence between you both grew more and more uncomfortable until Levi’s face suddenly contorts with frustration. You open your mouth to apologize for whatever you’d done but he cuts you off by coming forward suddenly and placing both hands on the counter.
“Your eyes,” he forces out the words before averting his own gaze. Any hope of keeping yourself grounded in reality seemed to go up in smoke as your heart rate kicked into overdrive.
“Yes?” you say breathlessly and the fact that you weren’t kicking him out for being incredibly inappropriate was enough to spur him on with whatever point he was trying to get to.
“How long?” he swallows thickly and takes a deep breath, “How long since they’ve changed?”
“They’ve always been this way,” it should’ve been harder to admit, but the way Levi was acting was distracting you from the shame you’d normally be feeling. A soft sound, like an intrigued sigh, escapes his lips and he covers his mouth with those beautiful long fingers you’d been trying not to think about. All you can do is stare at him as he comes to terms with the information you’d just revealed. You wondered why he’d even want to know and what he would do now that the truth was out in the open. Finally, after an unbearable stretch of time, Levi lowers his hand back onto the counter, revealing a faint but amused looking smile.
“Well,” his confidence began to return. “They look much better on you than they do on me.”
“What?” Every cell in your body seemed to be buzzing with anticipation. You wanted to believe that this was all leading up to something good, but a nagging fear in the back of your mind warned you against giving in to the false hope that you’d vowed to ignore.
“I was born with these eyes as well,” Levi confesses calmly while gesturing to his face. “Both of them.”
It was your turn to cover your mouth, wondering desperately if it was all right yet to dare to dream that there was meaning behind what was happening after all.
“I have no idea if this is all a coincidence or not,” Levi shrugs as his mouth pulls into a frown. “To be honest, I gave up on the idea of soulmates a long time ago, but I cannot ignore the fact that you’ve consumed my thoughts from the moment I saw you in the market.”
Tears unwittingly begin to blur your vision as all the tension inside you finally reaches a tipping point.
“I…” You aren’t sure whether to laugh or cry. Levi’s hand appears in front of your face, offering a handkerchief. You accept it gratefully and wipe the wetness from your eyes and cheeks. “I didn’t think it was possible, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking of you either.”
Levi folds his arms over his chest as if contemplating the matter seriously, but the pause only lasts a few seconds this time. Before you have time to worry about what he’ll say, he’s offering you his hand.
“Would you like to be my soulmate then?” he asks, a hint of teasing in his voice despite the nervous energy surrounding you both. You don’t hesitate to place your hand into his. You weren’t sure if your matching eyes was a sign that you were meant to be together, but it wouldn’t be fair to either of you to throw away the shot of having the kind of life you’d watched other people enjoy your entire lives. If you were able to bring each other happiness, you could care less if it was what fate had planned.
“Yes,” Your voice shook with the overwhelming emotions coursing through you, “I think I’d like that.”
“As would I,” Levi replies as a real smile takes over his face at last. The hope you see in the depths of his beautiful gray eyes makes you appreciate the matching color of your own for the very first time, and the idea of a happy future finally seems within your grasp.

the countdown
Tumblr media
Summary: There’s a countdown on your wrist, but what happens when it randomly resets?
Pairing: Daichi x Reader, Hinata x Yachi (side pair)
Warning: Fluff, I guess?
Word Count: 3578
Prompt: Soulmate AU: There is a clock countdown on your wrist to when you meet your soulmate
A/N: Part of the @celestialarchiveshq soulmate collab
Tumblr media
Y/N
It has always annoyed you, the ticking clock on the underside of your wrist, to the point that you started wearing things to cover it. Over the years, you watched people close to you obsess over the clock, a few of your college friends had dropped out because the constant partying and searching to meet their soulmate seemed to overshadow their grades.
When you were younger the idea of the clock reaching 0:00 excited you, meeting the person who was supposed to know you best, who wouldn’t want that? But as you matured, you started to believe that soulmates don’t always mean forever, they don’t always mean romantic partners, so how could you stay excited over something that could lead to a huge disappointment? Not to mention the depressing thought of what if your soulmate was the romantic type and they weren’t attracted to you. That could happen, right?
What if they preferred long hair but you had just cut it? Or the opposite? What if you had just colored your hair a color that reminded them of an ex? That thought would put you in a tailspin. What if they had exes? Even with the soulmate system, people still found themselves attracted to other people. It made you think of that trashy MTV show where everyone has a perfect match, but there’s always one couple that finds out they aren’t matches, but they refuse to move on. What if your soulmate had someone like that?
You drop your head down onto your desk, the loud bang catches your coworker’s attention as she walks back towards you with two mugs of coffee. Not that she needs it, just like her soulmate, she’s like an endless ball of energy.
“Still upset about last weekend?”
You slowly lift your head, rubbing your forehead knowing you’ll have some embarrassing red mark. Yachi Hitoka has to be one of the sweetest people you’ve ever met, she’s always there for anyone who needs it, helps out whenever she can, and at first you were worried when you met her. You instantly became protective of her, not wanting anyone to take advantage of her kindness, but then you saw her lay down the law when it came to someone missing a deadline for one of the ad campaigns and all you could do was smile proudly.
“I just can’t believe I was this close,” you hold up your hand, using your index finger and thumb to show a small amount, “to meeting them and they just disappeared.”
*                      * Over the weekend, Yachi’s soulmate Hinata Shoyo came in from Osaka to visit and the three of you ended up attending the Bunkyo Plum Blossom Festival. Despite being the third wheel, you couldn’t help but find yourself smiling, watching just how well they not only complimented their similarities but their differences as well.
You glanced down at your wrist, for no particular reason and felt the wind get knocked out from your lungs. Yachi turned to ask if you had heard her before she stopped walking, backing up to be at your side.
“Y/N, what’s wrong?”
You couldn’t find the words, your mind completely blanked as you held up your wrist, showing her just how low the clock had gotten.
00:01:13
00:01:12
00:01:11
“Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!” Yachi started to jump up and down, causing a small scene on the tightly packed sidewalk. Hinata tilted his head, waiting to be filled in as the two of you walked back towards him.
“Kinda romantic, Y/N. Meeting your soulmate at a festival.” Yachi now had her arm looped with yours, scanning the sidewalks.
“It’s never been this low before.” You said casually, but a knot started to form in your stomach. It felt as if every emotion you could imagine started to wash over you, grabbing ahold of you and making you realize just how real the situation could be.
What if they didn’t like you? What if it was a best friend type of soulmate? What if they simply brushed you off, telling you that they were going to be with someone that wasn’t their soulmate?
What if…?
What if…?
What if…?
Yachi hand slightly squeezed your arm, pulling you from the anxiety that had seemed into your chest, tightening with each breath. “Look at your wrist.”
00:00:20
You started to look around, wondering briefly if your soulmate had been looking around for you, eyes on the clock waiting to bump into you.
00:00:13
Your stomach dropped and you walked over to a wall, leaning against it with fear that you’d just drop if you didn’t have support. Wasn’t this supposed to be an exciting moment in your life? If so, then why did you currently feel like you were about to melt into a puddle of nerves?
00:00:09
“Are you okay?”
You glanced up, seeing two uniformed officers standing around you. Hinata quickly drug Yachi up to the brunette officer, the three seeming to be familiar with each other while raven-haired officer was waiting for your reply.
“Oh, uhm, yes.” You felt dumb, but you held up your wrist, “just a little nervous.”
00:00:07
He let out a small chuckle, “I’m sure things will be fine. My husband ran into a light post when we first met.”
Yachi waved you over, you could hear her mention your name to the other officer but your movement halted when the officers’ radios crackled, a voice requesting back-up. The two officers quickly excused themselves, a few other officers gathering around them before they left, disappearing around the corner.
When you saw a person walking towards you, you glanced down, wondering it this person could be it, but something in you cracked noticing a drastic change in the clock on your wrist.
1368:59:52
*                      * 1200:03:25
50 days.
That’s how long you have to wait to meet your soulmate. But would you ever meet them? You had asked around and no one else had ever heard of someone’s clock restarting, what if you didn’t actually have a soulmate? If it was just some glitch, your clock just resetting to some random time like an electronic clock after the power cuts out and then back on.
Absentmindedly, you sip on the coffee Yachi had brought you, looking out the window wondering that if it wasn’t a glitch, had your soulmate being eagerly looking for you that day too? Were they just as upset that your clocks reset? A smile twitches on the corner of your lips, maybe the whole soulmate thing wasn’t so bad after all.
*          *          *          * Daichi
Sawamura Daichi tilts his head back, squeezing his eyes shut as he lets out a yawn. Daichi is tired and stressed, all he wants is to sink into his bed and sleep. At least until his clock hit zero and his soulmate was standing in front of him.
He pulls himself up in the chair, rubbing his eyes before glancing down at the countdown that’s on his wrist. He isn’t someone that spends large amounts of time staring and obsessing over each tick of the clock, but just a few weeks ago, it seemed to have reset and that alone caught his attention.
960:12:46
40 days.
Part of Daichi wants to say the clock on his wrist doesn’t bother him, that it’s not something he thinks of often, but that’s a lie. His dedication to his job, to protecting not just his loved ones, but those around him often painted him as a strict, by the book type of guy. The guy that wouldn’t bother to think of love or soulmates, being too focused on his job, but Daichi is just another hopeless romantic.
Which is exactly why he often wonders how it will fit in with the whole soulmate aspect. Even with the ups and downs his job brought, the uncertainty that sometimes came with each day, he has never regretted his choice of profession. But while those things didn’t sway his own personal opinion, it leaves him wondering how his soulmate would feel about it. If it would be something that they’d be able to accept and understand why he went that route.
What if they couldn’t accept it? What if they asked him to change careers? What if it was the straw that broke the camel’s back and tore them apart?
What if…?
What if…?
“Keep it up and you get forehead wrinkles.”
He feels a warm hand on his shoulder, turning to see his silver-haired best friend smiling at him. Sugawara sits across from Daichi, the two finally having a free day to meet and catch up.
“Keep worrying about me and your hair will go white.” “Take that back right now Daichi!” Suga rolls his eyes as the former captain starts laughing.
After ordering drinks, the conversation sways to Suga and his new group of students before it inevitably goes to Daichi and his soulmate mark. When he called the former setter, he, like everyone else, had never heard of a mark resetting, but he refused to let his best friend dwell on it. Even now, Suga places a comforting hand on Daichi’s forearm as he gives him a comforting smile.
“Maybe fate decided it wasn’t the right time.” Suga offers, he didn’t have too much room to talk. His current significant other isn’t his soulmate and yet he refuses to let it go, saying that what he has makes him happy and that’s all that should matter.
Daichi sighs, taking a sip on his drink, one of his fears sitting on the tip of his tongue. “What if I end up arresting my soulmate?” “You’d have a pretty unique meet-up story. Ow!” Suga rubs his shin, Daichi sitting there with a smirk on his face.
“That aside, it doesn’t change the fact that it reset in Tokyo and I was just there temporarily.”
“Visit on a day off.” Suga shrugs, “though you were there for a festival that attracts tons of people.”
“I hope you’re better at advice when it comes to your students.”
Suga rolls his eyes, shoulders drooping in defeat, he really was out of ideas. “When exactly did it reset?”
“Not sure, it was low before I ran into Hinata, but by the time I got back from a call it had already reset.”
“Was there anyone else around? Besides Yachi.” Daichi just shakes his head, finishing off his drink before he twists his wrist causing the ice to circle around the glass. Then it hits him, there had been someone else, but he didn’t get a good glance, his partner was talking to them. He simply shrugged it off back then, but now he wondered if maybe, just maybe they had been his soulmate.

30 days
You’re dancing around your apartment, headphone in as you straighten up the throw blankets on the couch, so you didn’t hear the knocking on the door or the voice calling you until you turned and let out a scream.
You’re doubled over, panting as you struggle to catch your breath, Yachi apologizing frantically and repeatedly until you finally stand up, telling her you were just a bit startled.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” The worry on her face as plain as day.
“I swear,” you flop down on the couch, “what’s up?” “Oh yeah!” She instantly perks up, “my high school is doing an alumni volleyball game and Hinata’s going to be in it. Thought you might want to join!”
“When is it?” You know this is her way of saying ‘you can’t meet your soulmate if only go to work and home’ but you were pretty confident that if you waited long enough, they could just end up moving in next door.
“Next month! It’ll be so much fun!” She pulls her hands up to her chest, putting on her best pouty face, “please Y/N.”
You want to just tell her no because who knows what you could end up doing that clashes with her plans. Plus, if you had counted correctly and your clock didn’t decide to reset again, that would be close to when you were supposed to meet your soulmate. And you had been in Tokyo when it almost hit 0, so they had to be here, right?
“Yeah, of course.” You gave her a smile as she gave you a quick hug, telling you just how excited Hinata and the rest of the crows would be, apparently, she bragged about you to all her former classmates. She excuses herself to make a call, most likely to Hinata, and you take the time to sigh, you had never cared about your soulmate before, what was so different now?
*          *          *          * Daichi
“Did you just put in for time off?” His partner Ito teases, sitting down at his desk that’s next to Daichi’s.
“I’ve taken time off before.”
“Three years ago, doesn’t count.”
“It was—” Daichi starts to protest before he realizes that Ito’s right, the last time was just before Ito was assigned his partner and it had been for one of his sibling’s graduation.
“This much be important then.”
He shrugs, “just getting together with some old teammates from high school.”
Ito smirks, “should I call you captain to help take you back?”
“Don’t even.” Daichi shakes his head, getting up before heading to the breakroom. Maybe meeting up with old friends would help take his mind off the whole Tokyo debacle. Glancing down, he signs when he sees his countdown.

20 days.

“My mom said that you are more than welcomed to stay, she has the guest room ready.” Yachi beams, bringing you the usual after lunch coffee she gets. For the last few days Yachi has been eagerly gushing about the upcoming alumni event, having the entire weekend planned out with tons of things to do.
“I don’t want to impose.”
“You aren’t, if anything she’s excited to finally meet you!”
You haven’t had the courage to actually tell Yachi that you no longer wanted to go, that you would rather just stay at home instead of being the one that brings down the mood. The countdown on your wrist has all but consumed you lately and as you get closer and closer, you just want to forget about it. People lived happily without them, right? Who was fate anyways, trying to tell people who they should and shouldn’t be with. If you put in the effort, anything could work, right?
Part of you knows that’s not true, you watched someone try to date their someone who wasn’t their soulmate. They were blissfully happy and everything seemed wonderful, until one of them met their soulmate and soon their relationship had burnt out. It seemed no matter what, that bond from a soulmate just overfloods anything else.
But then again, when you watched just how much Yachi lights up when she hears from Hinata or when someone mentions him, you couldn’t help but want that too. Wanting someone who acted like they were seeing you for the first time each time they saw you, being able to just know how you felt with one look. You look down at the clock again, wondering if maybe it had reset because you didn’t have the right mindset back then. That if maybe fate somehow knew you weren’t ready yet, if it took almost having them to losing them for you to finally realize just how much a soulmate could offer you when you let your guard down.
240:26:01
10 days.
*          *          *          * Daichi
Night patrols are something Daichi never really thought he’d find himself enjoying, but the ability to just causally drive around in silence is more welcoming that he considered it would be. Originally, his partner Ito was supposed to have patrol but he offered to pick it up since he was getting the next few days off to visit with his former classmates, he really didn’t mind the last-minute change to his schedule. Especially since he was getting nervous thinking about the game tomorrow, it wasn’t that he was worried about his skill set, but there were going to be several pro players in attendance.
It was already 8:45PM which meant he only had 15 minutes before his shift ended and he could go home, which he figured would go by slowly since most people were already in for the night. The sudden blur of speeding headlights catch his eyes and he let out a defeated sigh, of course it was too much to ask for a quiet night.
16:14:32
*          *          *          * Y/N
Shit!
You curse yourself, you had told Yachi that you’d take the train to Miyagi, she left the day before to meet up with Hinata, but you ended up staying later at work than intended. So here you are, five hours into your drive, half asleep and irritated, you should’ve just told her no.
You hear your phone going off, no doubt it’s Yachi asking where you are, you look down briefly to grab it, not paying attention to the change in speed limits as you continue down the road. It’s not until you hear police sirens that your attention is pulled away from everything else and you just want to scream.
Luckily due to the almost empty streets, you are able to pull over with ease, the patrol car pulling in behind you shortly after. You close your eyes, hitting your forehead to the steering wheel repeatedly before you hear a car door close and brace yourself.
*          *          *          * Daichi
He taps on the driver’s side window twice with his knuckle, waiting for it to be rolled down. A speeding ticket wouldn’t take long to write up, so his plans to be home by 9:30PM was still looking good which he was thankful for.
As the window rolls down, he catches his soul mark in the reflection and he scrunches up his face, getting an odd look from the driver of the vehicle.
00:00:02
*          *          *          * Y/N
“This is awkward, but—” You stop, noticing where his line of sight is and you finally look down at your wrist.
00:00:00
He smirks, “I never thought I’d meet my soulmate right before issuing them a speeding ticket.”
You aren’t completely sure why, but you end up laughing to the point you end up coughing. You couldn’t believe it, your whole life wondering at what moment you’d meet your soulmate, thinking of all the different situations that could possibly set up running into them, for it to end up like this. Talk about anticlimactic.
“Speaking of soulmates, think you could let me off with a warning?” You bat your lashes at him, really hoping that the soulmate card will work.
He clicks his tongue, smile on his face, “no can do.”
You drop your jaw in disbelief, “I guess this will be one hell of a meet-cute story, huh?”
*          *          *          * “You are so lame, Daichi.” Sugawara laughs, Nishinoya joining in on joking with their former captain.
Daichi glances over to the other side of the gym where you are, laughing with Yachi and Kiyoko and he can’t help but be smitten. He had tried for the longest time to not imagine his soulmate, not wanting to put that imaginary burden of being what he had wanted on the one he ended up with, but with you, you just smashed through any expectations he had and it had only been half a day.
You look over and see Daichi looking at you before you quickly turn your head away, getting a laugh from the former team managers. You were thrilled to have your soulmate, everything made sense, and it definitely helped that he was easy on the eyes.
“I still can’t believe he gave you a ticket!” Yachi protests, shooting Daichi a scold.
“I can.” Kiyoko smiles, “and I don’t think Y/N minds.”
Kiyoko’s right, you don’t really mind at all, because that’s part of your story with your soulmate, with Daichi. The person who had you waiting at the edge of your seat since before you could even tell time, the person that the stars had willed to be yours.
The first time you had almost met, he was in Tokyo because the festival needed more officers to help monitor things, it was just by chance that he ran into his former classmates that you happened to be with. The time you actually met, he was covering a shift that he wasn’t even supposed to be working and you were running late which was something you didn’t tend to do.
He wraps an arm around your waist, pulling you into his side, placing a soft kiss on the side of your forehead. You let yourself melt into his side, finally understanding what was so special about soulmates, why so many people spent forever trying to find theirs.
“You know, I can talk to my boss, erase the ticket.” “No way! I’m gonna frame it!”
Daichi’s face deadpans, “what?” You nod, “oh yeah, you aren’t gonna live that one down.”
Daichi just shakes his head, letting out a deep breath, suddenly realizing you were gonna be as much trouble as Kageyama and Hinata were. But somehow, he feels himself looking forward to the adventure that was you.

Escapism AU (Y/n) & Passione
This is mostly about mc’s interactions with the gang including a bit of La Squadra and Unita Speciale. I’ll probably add more as I think.
Bucciarati’s Gang
Mc crashes at their house from time to time even though she has her own apartment
This either because she wants to sleep over for fun
Or because she’s finished a mission and their house is closer
Sometimes she shows up at 2 AM and just passes out on their couch
It happens more often than it should
Bruno eventually gives her a copy of the key
She steals food from the fridge too but makes up for it by buying groceries
They leave a toothbrush and cup for her in one of the bathrooms since she comes over so much
Before everyone was recuited, there were extra bedrooms in the house that weren’t being used
They left a guest room for mc but she doesn’t use it all the time, opting to pass out on the couch first
Either Bruno or Abbacchio usually brings her to her room though Abbacchio would never admit to it
Mista draws on her face with marker sometimes but leaves her on the couch most of the time. He can’t ruin her cute face all the time
Narancia cuddles with her on the couch or join Mista in doodling
Fugo leaves her on the couch but gets a blanket and readjusts her position if it’s uncomfortable
However, after Mista got recruited, mc gave up her room so Mista didn’t have to room with anyone
Now, she just sleeps on the couch or whoever’s okay with her borrowing their bed
She has tried several times to get them to wear normal clothes outside (they dressed perfectly normally before joining the mafia!) and only about half those times did it actually work
Mc is strong enough carry everyone in the group bridal style
The only ones who gets particularly mouthy when she does is Abbacchio and Mista but only because Mista wants to carry her too
She joins Fugo, Narancia and Mista in doing stupid things but it’s fun
She knows the torture dance
Mc isn’t technically a part of their team but they consider her to be because of how often she stays over and tags along for missions
She doesn’t expect anyone to really like her the way they do despite how obvious their feelings are
Part of it is because she isn’t supposed to be in this universe in the first place, that she’s an outsider of sorts. She’s here to make sure they don’t die
The other part of it is the guilt of leaving them to die in the first timeline. She feels like she doesn’t deserve how highly they think of her because of how readily she was to let fate run it’s course the first time around, even if they don’t remember it
She’s sooner die then let any of them do the same
Giorno
Mc meets Giorno before he’s recruited into the gang since she does go to the same school as him even though she doesn’t really show up to classes that often
She’s about 2 years older than Giorno
They became friends prior to his hair turning blond and she almost didn’t recognize him but his eyes are rather distinctive
When it did turn blond, mc got a vaguely panicked call in the morning from him saying his hair turned blond for some reason
She’s the first person to braid his hair with the needlessly extra loop at the end after it turned blond
She wasn’t sure how the donuts worked but the next time she saw him he had the signature donut hair so she guessed he figured out how to do it
It becomes routine for her to braid Giorno’s hair when she notices it’s undone
She gave him a crash course on stands when he found out she had one
They spend a lot of time in libraries
Mc insists on paying for food when they get lunch together though Giorno always refuses
I feel like Giorno lowkey craves intimacy?
Mc calls him “GioGio” sometimes
Trish
Hmmmmm, gay
I really like Trish hence why she’s included in the harem
Out of everyone in the gang guarding her, she’s the closest with mc since they’re both girls which is also why Bruno assigns mc to her the most often
Convenient for Trish since it means more time to flirt
Unfortunately, mc does fall under the “are we just being nice to each other or are we flirting” when Trish is just about ready to ask for her hand in marriage
She’s flirting, no doubt
Trish lets mc rest her head on her thighs which mc can confirm is very comfortable
Trish is one of the two people she trusts to do her make up, the other one being Abbacchio
You know that picture where there’s one girl sitting on the other girl doing her makeup
That’s basically Trish and mc
Post-Vento Aureo, they stay in contact and remain good friends as Trish pursues a career as a singer
Narancia
Mc joined Fugo on that walk where they found Narancia in the alleyway so she’s partially responsible for him joining the mafia
They bring him to Libecco where Bruno is and he gets food before going to the hospital to get his eye treated like in canon
She goes shopping with him after he’s out of the hospital
They get normal clothes but the next she sees him, he’s wearing his canon outfit and she wonders why she even bothered with his fashion sense in the first place
She’s the one who buys him his bandana that he wears in his canon outfit
They’re pretty cute together actually
She calls him “Nara”
While she isn’t available all the time to help Fugo tutor him, when she is around, she tries her best to help
They listen to music together and mc ends up reccomending a lot though some songs haven’t come out yet so she’s only able to play them on her phone
“If I run and jump at (Y/n), she’ll definately catch me!” “Wait, I’m holding a mug-” *Drops the mug and catches Narancia*
Hugs with Narancia often end with his face buried in the crook of her neck
Fugo
Probably the one mc goes with on missions the most
Part of it is because they’re the closest in age prior to everyone else joining, another part is due to mc’s nullifying ability effectively making her immune to Purple Haze’s virus
Mc be like “if I got infected with purple haze’s virus, I would simply become immune. rip to everyone else but I’m different.”
Still, Fugo is still very cautious when it comes to pulling out Purple Haze
Fugo buys her lavender hand lotion once and she decided she liked it so she continued to use it
He sorta associates lavender with mc
Mc buys him strawberry earrings. Sometimes she spontaneously buys stuff that reminds her of him
Fugo isn’t particularily fond of contact (backstory trauma) so mc tries to keep it to a minimum unless he gives an okay
Probably a few missions together where mc saves him, they’re walking down a street together and he just slips his hand into hers
Asadlskjh, I want them to hold hands
When she’s doing school assignments over at the Bucci house, Fugo helps her look over and proofread them despite the fact she has access to the internet through her phone and can search stuff literally from the future (not that he knows). She appreciates the input
I think that after Fugo leaves the group during Vento Aureo, I would like to bring him back somehow before the end of Vento Aureo
Abbacchio
He didn’t like mc at first, no surprises here, but after they went on a few missions together where she saved his life, he begrudgingly opened up
She reminds him of his dead partner due to how reckless she is in saving people
She an idiot but she’s his idiot
He’s likely one of the most worried when she gets hurt since he doesn’t want to lose another person who died protecting him
Abbacchio does come off as very tsundere seeing how prickly he is to everyone except Bruno but everyone except for mc notices that he isn’t that prickly to her either
Mc doesn’t expect him to like her to any degree so whenever anyone points out that he’s nicer to her, she’s like “what?”
They have late night talks a lot
Abbacchio stays up late drinking and mc doesn’t sleep consistently enough
Sometimes they go up to the roof of the house to talk
She has fallen alseep on him multiple times. His tiddies make great pillows.
Generally, she’s got her head resting on his tiddies, one arm hanging over his body, the other spawled out somewhere. He keeps one arm around her head and the other around her waist
Bruno
Mc with Bruno is oddly domestic?
she helps around the house, buying groceries, helping out in the kitchen and cleaning from time to time
Bruno appreciates it a lot
If Abbacchio and mc have late night talks, Bruno and her have early morning talks when everyone else is asleep and the sun is just barely rising
Bruno keeps telling her it isn’t healthy to sleep only 3 hours so he convinces her to fall asleep for a few more hours
He spoils her a lot and brings her to cafes
Bruno is one of the last people she would expect to like her more than a friend due to the “bruno’s a mom” memes and he’s nice to everyone (almost everyone, excluding ememies), there’s no way he would like her more
Sure, he kisses the crown of her head and the back of her hand from time to time and they cook together
But they’re just good friends, right?
He frequently lectures her on being more careful and not being so reckless
Mista
They discuss weird stuff a lot
The combination of mc’s general knowledge of random things due to the internet and Mista’s bad timing when bringing up topics leads to interesting conversations
Like, your tongue never sits comfortably in your mouth, your skeleton is wet, are you inside your skeleton or is your skeleton inside you?
Mc is always in a constant state of worry when he’s on a mission because his bullets always end up in his own body something
The only reason he isn’t dead yet is because his dumb*ss aura surrounds him
Mc qualifies as a cute girl 11/10
He flirts with her casually and the pistols tell her his thought even when he doesn’t want them to but she never seems to notice
“You’ve been flirting with me?” “Have been for the last year, thanks for noticing.”
Mc gets Mista a gun holster after the events of Vento Aureo because he really shouldn’t be tucking his gun in his pants like that
If someone was really angry, they could lean over and shoot his d*ck off
La Squadra
I sorta debated whether la squadra should be a part of the harem or not but I think mostly no
That’s because I don’t really have an age range for them but Risotto’s like 28 and big age gaps are creepy. So, I guess for some of the la squadra members, it’s up to interpretation whether it’s romantic or platonic. I’m inclined towards platonic though
I’m not sure if I want to save Sorbet and Gelato yet
Mc, of course, goes along for missions as she’s ordered to
La squadra is so broke. Why doesn’t Diavolo pay them more? They literally kill people for their job
Mc doesn’t crash at their house very often but she stops by to hang out and drop off food
She buys them groceries when she notices their fridge is super empty. She doesn’t need them to pay her back (her paycheck is suprisingly big), but they should stop eating takeout all the time
She usually calls Risotto to ask if there’s anything specific they want
She’s rather fond of Pesci. They go fishing together when they have time
Illuso and mc are gossip buddies
Melone gets kink shamed during missions
Ghiaccio and mc have gone ice skating together before
I don’t really have anything else for the others... I’ll think about it
When Vento Aureo begins, mc is trying to save them though she isn’t directly working with them
La Unita Speciale
These are pretty random
Tizano and Squalo are gay, mc was there when they proposed to each other
Mc gets ordered to buy food when they have meetings though it’s pretty rare
When she does show up to drop off food, it’s a constant feeling of “let me leave quicker please” because Cioccolata is freaky
She thinks she runs into Doppio way too often when she’s doing missions
The only good thing about it is that Doppio is pretty nice when Diavolo isn’t kicking about. On one hand, Doppio=nice, on the other Doppio=Diavolo
Mc feeds Secco sugar cubes when Cioccolata isn’t looking
She would not trust Cioccolata to patch up any of her wounds, he’s likely to dissect her
Mc gets missions through calls and emails but sometimes Doppio’s around to tell her what they are

written for @mlcorefour appreciation week
After accidentally panicking and telling basically the whole world that she's dating a member of the hero team, Ladybug must someone to fake-date her, and fast. Of course Carapace suggests the obvious solution: she can just date his girlfriend for a few weeks. As the plan dissolves into chaos, the four learn what it means to be the heart of a team, while also getting into more shenanigans than humanly possible along the way.
---
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Those were the first words to tumble from Chat Noir’s lips, his smile too overeager, too happy to be genuine.
“I didn't-”
“Girl, you have GOT to be kidding me,” Rena Rouge interrupted, whirling on her the second her feet touched the rooftop. “I thought we were friends!?! Who is it? Pegasus? Viperion?”
“I thought he was dating Ryuko,” Carapace jumped in.
“I’m not-” Ladybug opened her mouth to explain, only to be interrupted. She couldn’t really blame Alya (who only had fifteen Ladynoir pinterest boards and showed them off to anyone who so much as mentioned the superhero duo).
“Oh, right,” Rena Rouge nodded. “Otherwise she totally would’ve been my next guess.” The fox heroine turned to her desperately. “Please don’t tell me it’s Tigresse. I’ve been working on my Tigerella fanfic for months.”
“Guys, can you calm down for-”
“King Monkey, maybe?” Carapace guessed as Chat plopped down on the edge of the building, failing at not looking miserable. “He doesn’t really seem like he’s her type, but you never know.”
Rena Rogue cut her off again. “I swear, if it’s Vesperia and I didn’t see it coming…” The heroine buried her face in her hands. “Ladybug you better explain. I don’t know what to do with my life anymore!”
Instantly, three sets of eyes locked on her, begging for clarification. Ladybug took a deep breath.
“Guys, I’m not dating anyone.”
“But you said-” Rena protested.
“I know and I’m sorry!” she cried, trying not to look at Chat as her face heated. Not that it meant anything. Obviously.  “The reporters kept asking all these questions and I just wanted to get out of there and it slipped out.”
It was hard to miss the flash of relief in Chat’s eyes.
“So, let me get this straight,” Carapace said, staring at her incredulously. “Your grand plan to get out of a stressful press conference was to tell everyone in Paris on live television that you’re dating someone on our team?”
It sounded a lot worse when he said it out loud.
“I panicked,” Ladybug admitted with a wince.
Carapace breathed a sigh of relief. “Well, at least you can just admit that and everything will go back to normal.”
Rena Rouge and Chat Noir glanced at each other knowingly and almost simultaneously burst into giggles, as if he had said something hilarious.
“That doesn’t sound like a good sign,” Ladybug swung her yo-yo in an anxious circle.
“Trust me when I say it will not work out like that,” Chat Noir smirked somewhat bitterly in the light of the setting sun.
Rena waved her hand across the sky as if she could already read the headlines written on the clouds. “Shocking Reveal - Ladybug Tells All.”
“I could just tell them the truth,” she tried to protest.
“Heroes Attempt to Cover up the Truth,” Alya finished, stopping the yo-yo’s frantic circle with her flute.
Ladybug groaned, wanting to kick something, preferably Hawkmoth’s stupid face.
“And of course it's right around the anniversary,” Chat Noir reminded her.
“Uh, no it’s not,” Carapace glanced at her partner like he was crazy.
And he kinda was. She distinctly remembered a picnic with a certain kitty on the rooftops near where she ‘fell from heaven’ as they watched a parade of small children stream by, wearing Stoneheart cosplay only a few months ago.
“Not that anniversary,” Chat Noir deflated a little. “I was talking about Oblivio.”
Her brain screeched to a halt.
“This just keeps getting better and better,” she groaned.
Carapace and Rena exchanged a glance. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“After a certain Ladyblogger posted a photo of me and Chat,” she locked her gaze on Rena, relishing the moment a little too much. “Some of the fans seem to have gotten it into their heads that Kitty and I are destined to get together on that day.
“Generally involving a week full of frustrated Ladynoir-shipping akumas,” Chat jumped in. “And one exhausted and pointedly not together bug and cat.”
Ladybug giggled. “Okay, you have to admit, some of them are kinda funny.”
The cat hero snorted. “I wouldn’t call Aphrodite funny.”
“What about the fanfic style one?” she nudged his knee playfully, trying to see if banter would help cheer him up. “You have to admit, throwing mugs at the akuma during the coffee shop AU was the best.”
A hint of a real smirk flickered across her partner’s lips.
“You called me sweet when you dumped all that sugar in my hair,” she reminded him.
“It was an accident!” he protested with a grin.
“Yeah, right,” Ladybug crossed her arms. “You were supposed to throw it at him. You totally did it on purpose!”
Chat clutched his chest, pretending to wipe tears from his eyes. “I can’t believe you would have such little faith in me, m’lady!!”
Both of them somehow missed the knowing glance their best friends shot each other.
All their weapons buzzed simultaneously, doubtlessly with an update from the news. Chat Noir flicked open his baton and sighed, showing the headline to the rest of them.
“Which of Our Heroes is Ladybug’s Boyfriend?”
Her partner scrolled through the article, grumbling under his breath.
Carapace raised his eyebrows under his hood. “Bold of them to assume you don't have a girlfriend.”
“I wish I could say that it’s bold of them to assume I’m dating anyone at all,” she sighed. “But I kinda started this so I guess I can’t blame them.”
“THAT’S IT!” Rena Rouge leapt to her feet, nearly knocking her boyfriend’s shell over the edge of the roof.
“What?” Ladybug glanced at her comrades to check if they had the slightest idea of what was going on.
“You told the press that you’re dating one of us on the hero team, right?” the fox heroine asked excitedly.
“Yes?” Ladybug answered hesitantly. “You were there too.”
“Not the point,” her friend waved the comment off. “The only solution that doesn’t end in even more akuma attacks is fairly obvious.”
The other three glanced at each other to see if they had gotten it.
“COME ON GUYS,” Alya sighed. “Ladybug just has to pretend to be dating one of us for a few weeks. Think about it. They go out on a few dates, cue general excitement from Paris about the first official hero couple, tragically break up after a few weeks and everything goes back to normal.”
Ladybug shrugged. “I guess it could work.”
“Why does this sound way too similar to the basic plot for any fake dating fanfic?” Chat Noir hissed in the nearby turtle hero’s ear.
Or hood by where his ear should be.
“Probably because that's exactly what it is,” Carapace whispered back.
Rena smirked.
“And I happy to know of an available cat who would be happy to take-”
Her triumphant Ladynoir wingwoman grin fell from her face as the duo shook their heads in unison.
“Bad idea,” Chat Noir admitted. “I don’t want to think about the worldwide catastrophe that could occur after out ‘breakup.’”
“It would be like last Valentine’s day, but infinitely worse,” Ladybug jumped in, wincing at the memory of yet another love akuma that nearly burned Paris to the ground in its mission to make its OTP kiss.
Not that kissing Chat was such a bad thing. He was kinda good-
She cut off that mental track before it could get anywhere.
“Well, who else are you going to fake-date?” Alya asked. “I mean, I would totally be up for the job, but…”
She gestured at her boyfriend.
Carapace’s silence spoke for itself.
“Uh, babe?” Rena nudged him with her boot.
“Yeah?” he said with a grin.
“You can’t actually be considering this.”
“Why not?” he shrugged. “It’s not like anyone in Paris will know any better.”
“Hawkmoth could target me!” Alya pointed out. “He knows where I live!”
Carapace shrugged. “I mean, he could do that anyway.”
“Still, this could…” her voice trailed off. “Uh- why you aren’t fighting me on this.”
The turtle hero shrugged. “I guess I don’t see a problem with it, dudette. As long as both you and Ladybug are cool with it, then I’m not going to stop you.”
“You’re supposed to be my voice of reason!” Rena Rouge stared at him like he had just admitted to secretly being Chloé’s BFF. “Are you secretly a sentimonster or something?”
Nino raised his hands innocently. “I’m just trying to be a supportive boyfriend and help you reach your dreams.”
“By handing me off to the first bug who wants to date me?”
Carapace fell back dramatically. “Babe, did you see Ladybug today,” he cried in an impression of his girlfriend's voice. “The way she stuck that landing and then she winked at me and I swear I died. No offense babe, but if Ladybug ever asked me out, I would break up with you in an instant.”
Rena turned bright red.
Ladybug giggled. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“You’re cool with this?” Rena spun on her.
“I mean, if Carapace is,” she smirked. “Sounds like it's the closest to a realistic relationship I’m going to get.”
Rena Rouge buried her head in her hands. “Hold on. I need to go scream on a rooftop.”
“Take all the time you need, babe,” Carapace called after her.
Ladybug smirked, grabbing her hand and kissing it like Chat would sometimes do for her (which totally didn’t leave her in a stuttering mess afterwards. Obviously.). “Yeah, babe. Take all the time you need.”
Rena Rouge turned red and fled.
“Whoops,” Ladybug turned back to Carapace with a sheepish grin on her face. “Too much?”
“Just because you’re fake dating my girlfriend doesn’t mean you can steal her,” Carapace nodded. “Don’t worry. She’ll be back in a few minutes and fully on board with this.”
“I should go and talk to her,” Ladybug said as she bit her lip nervously. She waved to Chat in a TOTALLY NORMAL WAY as she leapt over the rooftops.
***
The ribbons on her pigtails fluttered in the evening wind as Chat Noir watched her vault over the rooftop after her possible future fake-girlfriend.
Carapace whistled. “Dude, you’ve got it bad.”
Adrien’s face heated as he punched the turtle hero's arm. “Shut up.”
“Have you considered telling her that, you know, you still love her?”
Chat Noir laughed bitterly. “And watch her heart rip in half as she tells me yet again that we could never be more than friends? No thanks.” He glanced away. “I’d rather give up my miraculous.”
The sounds of the city that echoed off the rooftops awkwardly filled the void between them.
Finally, Chat Noir asked. “So, wait, are we actually doing this?”
Carapace nodded. “We’re superheroes. It’s our duty to protect Paris. If the only way for us to do that is for my girlfriend to pretend-date yours, then it’s a sacrifice we have to make.”

Idk what you’re saying about the new blog theme I love the purple 👀
Anyway can you do a fic where maybe Mikasa is super stressed so her s/o gives her a really good massage? She deserves it 🥰
▸ a/n : thank you!! i hope you don’t mind me making this a modern au ://
OVERWORKING.
MASTERLIST : MIKASA ACKERMAN X G!N READER
summary : just a couple, meeting each other after a whole day full of working and not seeing each other
cw :
FINISHING THE PAPER WORK they had bring home last night, y/n stretched their arms and legs out, a sigh of relief escaping their lips. grabbing their phone from the desk, next to an empty mug, the e/c eyed person turned it on, their lock screen popping out. y/n’s current lock screen was a photo of them brightly smiling at the camera with one of their arms around their girlfriend’s waist, as both of her hands were gently placed around y/n’s lower back, her gaze glued only onto her happy partner, while a small, affectionate was plastered on her face. reminding themselves the memory, the h/c haired person smiled, feeling their heart flutter at the sight of their lovely girlfriend, mikasa.
meeting each other thanks to both y/n and mikasa’s mutual friend sasha at the end of the middle school, before attending the same high school, caused both of them to grow really close and develop deeper feelings for each other later on. the promise of taking things slow at the start probably vanished, as it’s been four years since the two of them started dating and the couple has been already living with each other for five months now.
as the time on the person’s phone read 9:48pm, y/n wondered where their partner could be, knowing mikasa overworked herself a lot, worrying them a little. when they were about to put their phone back down onto the desk, a sudden notification rang, getting the e/c eyed person’s attention. raising their phone once more, the short message from mikasa, saying she should be home in ten minutes, made smaller wave of happiness rush through their body, excited to see their lovely girlfriend after the entire day of being alone in their shared apartment with a piles of paper work, and business emails.
closing the laptop shut, after checking for any un-read messages, y/n stood up from the chair, while shoving their phone into the back pocket of their sweatpants, before opening the closet and swiftly grabbing a random, comfortable hoodie. the h/c haired person turned off the lights in the bedroom, closing the bedroom door behind them as y/n made their way towards the front door, wanting to nicely surprise mikasa.
walking down the stairs of the apartment building's second floor, y/n fiddled with the keys to their own apartment with a sudden wave of energy. the streets were dark, yet filled with a bunch of loud car noises, dogs barking and people shouting over each other once in a while. cold air hitting the e/c eyed person's face, made shivers ran down their spine as they hugged themselves, hoping to ease the cold at least a little, while waiting for their girlfriend to finally come home from work.
looking all around the street, a car came into y/n's view, causing them to sigh in relief, because even in such an absence of light, the e/c eyed person could recognise who the dark car belonged to. as the owner of the car parked, the lights completely turned off, being followed with the sound of the car door opening and soon closing.
"y/n? what are you doing outside?" fast-walking towards y/n, mikasa furrowed her eyebrows at her significant other. "i was just waiting for you." innocently answering, the h/c haired person softly chuckled, as the ravenette quietly sighed. "something could have happend to you. you know how dangerous this place can be." gently placing her hand on the side of y/n's arm, mikasa looked around the dark street. "i'm alright, don't worry. now let's go." the e/c eyed person grabbed their girlfriend's arms, as it was still holding onto them, before placing the other hand on mikasa's cheek, their thumb softly brushing over it.
as both y/n and mikasa leaned in, their lips collided, sharing a quick, soft kiss, before exchanging a small smiles. walking hand in hand upstairs towards the couple's apartment, y/n could notice something was definitely off with their partner, her shoulders slightly slumped, while keeping her tired gaze onto the stairs. the second they closed the apartment door behind the both of them, the h/c haired person didn't waste any time, before helping mikasa to take off her jacket, placing it into the closet afterwards.
"mikasa?" y/n walked closer to their girlfriend, her back facing the e/c eyed person. "hey, what's wrong?" softly calling out, y/n placed each of her hands on both sides of the female's arms, while their chin rested on her shoulder. "it's nothing, y/n. it has just been a long day in work." answering after few seconds of silence, mikasa slightly turned her head to the side, making an eye contact with her partner.
as an smaller idea popped out in y/n's mind, they shortly pecked the ravenette's cheek, before leaning back with their hands sneaking onto mikasa's shoulders. "how about while you eat the dinner i made..." the h/c haired person started talking in a low tone, their fingers slightly digging into their girlfriend's shoulders, massaging them. "...i'll go fill up the bathtub, huh?" melting into y/n's gentle and easing touch, mikasa hummed in response as her dark eyes remained closed in pleasure and tiredness at the same time.
continuing massaging the female's shoulders, the stress from overworking herself leaving mikasa’a body. the e/c eyed person leaned closer. "i know you've worked really hard for the position, but that doesn't mean you have to be so hard on yourself, and overwork all the time." mikasa's eyes fluttered opened, when she felt the comforting touch of y/n's hands leave her shoulders, just to feel those two arms sneak around her waist, pulling her closer into their chest. "promise me you won't be so hard on yourself, mikasa." the h/c haired person muttered, their head buried into the back of the ravenette's shoulder. "i won't, y/n."
raising their head and quickly pecking the place it was burried into just a few seconds ago, y/n's arms left mikasa's waist as they walked in front of her, finally fully facing her. an assuring smile plastered on the e/c eyed person's face caused the corners of the female's lips also twitch into a smile, her heart fluttering at the sight of their caring significant other.

Grandma was perched on the chair at the register with her knitting, the needles lightly clicking against each other as she moved the yarn forwards and backwards all without looking at her work. It was a skill she acquired from years of practice.
Instead, she watched as you buzzed around the store, arranging and then rearranging displays even though each attempt didn’t look different from the last. It had been amusing within the first ten minutes, but after watching you do this all around the store, she knew something was off, whether or not you wanted to admit it.
“Honey,” Grandma called out, hands still moving as she raised an eyebrow at you. “Did you put something in your breakfast this morning that I should know about? Perhaps you thought it was sugar that you put in your coffee, but it really wasn’t?”
Usually a comment like that would have made you pause and laugh, but you didn’t. Instead, you licked your lip as you glanced at her for a few seconds before adjusting the decorative jade scarf on display.
“I had cereal for breakfast Grandma,” you softly answered, nose scrunching at how the scarf was now set.
The store itself was quiet with the lack of shoppers allowing the conversation to easily pass between you and your Grandmother with ease to keep it from silent. When you didn’t even hear the clicking of her knitting needles, you felt unnerved in the silence.
Turning around, you were surprised to see her arms crossed over her chest, the purple beads attached to her glasses glimmering as she propped them on the top of her head. It had been years since she had looked at you like this; an instant reminder of the days in high school when you attempted to be rebellious.
“What is going on? You’ve managed to do a week’s worth of work in the four hours that we’ve been open.”
You shrugged, looking away and at the scarf. It had been one of Grandmother’s creations. Ideally, it was meant to be worn at events rather than for warmth. “I fell asleep early last night. That’s all.”
It wasn’t a lie. After weeks of waiting up for Namjoon to come home, you finally couldn’t find the strength to stay up, crashing at eleven. You weren’t entirely sure when he came home last night, but when the alarm went off at seven thirty, he was already gone. Unlike you where you needed to be at the store for nine, he had to be at the studio for eight. But like every morning the coffee maker was already set and your favorite mug was waiting, prepared for you by Namjoon himself. All you had to do was press the button to start it.
Grandma shook her head though. Standing up, she walked around the counter and once she was in front of you, pressed her cool hand against your forehead.
The gesture made you smile. “I’m not sick Grandma.”
“I think I’ll decide that,” she teased, gently bopping a finger against the tip of your nose like she had when you were a child. “You may not be sick, but you’re bottling something up for sure.”
She always knew when you were dealing with an issue. As a child, you thought she was able to use magic to sense these types of things, and even though you were now an adult, you still liked to believe that she was magical. Especially when it worked in her favor.
“It’s nothing serious,” you half admitted, smiling up at her. “Namjoon’s just been pulling a lot of hours at the studio, so he’s there more than he’s at home.”
Raising an eyebrow, she ran her fingers through your hair. “He should tell his boss that his wife needs him at home.”
With a giggle, you stepped back once she removed her hand and went back to the scarf display. This time determined to drape it in a way that was pleasing to the eye. “His wife, doesn’t want to interfere with her husband’s career.”
“Please, the two of you are young and in your first year of marriage. He should be with you, in a certain room, in that cozy house of yours that has a few empty bedrooms.” Grandma sent a knowing grin to you, chuckling as you simply shook your head.
“Almost a year,” you corrected. “We’ve known each for a year, but he gave me the Mate Mark in November.”
Grandma hummed, making her way over to a wicker basket that held knitted rabbits dressed in thin sweaters and dresses. They were a hit with young children, perfect as baby shower gifts, and you absolutely loved to make them.
“Which proves my point even more. You’ve been married a little less than a year, and you’re both working like an old married couple.” Holding a bunny, she waved the rabbit’s arm at you. “As your Grandmother and your business partner, I’m telling you that you need a vacation. Go home, take a few days off and sleep in. I can run the shop on my own.”
“Grandma, I’m fi-”
“Yes, you’re fine,” Grandma interrupt. “You’re saying it but I’m not believing it one bit.”
A part of you wanted to argue for a little bit longer, expect all that came out was a sigh of frustration. You were more than capable of working for the rest of the day, but standing by the mannequin, Grandma was right. It was time to recharge yourself, and if you were going to figure out why Namjoon was acting so strange, it would help if you weren’t at the shop all day long. Glancing at the calendar, you realized that it was only Tuesday. How were you already so done with the week when it only just began?
“Alright,” you agreed, setting done the scarf once and for all to head towards the office. “I’ll go home, take that vacation.”
Her excited cheers were ignored as you went to gather your belongings, smiling nonetheless. As much as you teased her, you did love her dearly and were grateful to have Grandmother in your life.
Grabbing your purse, you gave her one last hug and reminded her that you’d be back on Monday before leaving the shop, the little bell jingling in your wake. The car was parked in the back-parking lot, but instead of guiding you there, your feet took you to the right, walking the short distance to another shop that was six doors down from yours.
The air conditioning hit like a wave washing off the summer heat as you entered the bookstore. From nowhere in particular soft music danced around the shop. It had been a while since you last saw Sarah and after everything, you were curious as to how she was doing considering that Hoseok was leaving at the end of the month.
“Be right there,” Sarah called out, her voice coming from a corner of the store that you couldn’t quite see.
“Or I can come to you?” You suggested, releasing the smile when she called out your name in glee.
Following the sound of her voice and books thumping on the floor, you weren’t surprised to see Sarah sitting cross legged on the floor in front of a bookcase. “Well I’m happy to see you like this instead of the last time I saw you.”
Sarah laughed, leaning over to hug you once you sat down next to her. “Believe me, I am too. What are you doing here? I thought you’d be at the shop.”
“Grandma insisted I needed a vacation.” You carefully leaned against a bookcase as Sarah continued to stack the shelf.
“Well I mean, you do,” Sarah agreed, glancing in your direction. “Besides that, how’ve you been? I’ve been meaning to text you but ever since Hoseok signed the contract, we’ve been running around trying to figure out what he needs before leaving for Seoul.”
You shrugged, spotting a romance novel with a crown on the cover. “I’m alright. Just…has Namjoon been in lately?”
Her hand paused its task at the mention of his name, this time turning to face you completely. Like your shop had been, the bookstore was currently free of customers. While that tended to be a worry, it was only noon and typical during the week. The weekend was when business really went to town.
“Actually, now that I think about it, he hasn’t been in these last few weeks. I think the last time I saw him was before the Dance Studio’s May show. Why, is something wrong?”
Licking your lips, you turned the book over, grazing the description with your fingertips. It wasn’t unlike Namjoon to skip out on his trips to the bookstore. It had been the first place he went to on his own when he first came to live with you and it was a habit he kept, always excited to tell you about the new sonnets and books he got that day.
It was strange for him to not be coming to the bookstore.
You knew when this all started, and you didn’t think Sarah wanted to be reminded of that so soon. “He’s just been working longer hours,” you said again, faking a smile when she raised an eyebrow. Guilt swirled in your heart from keeping the truth from her, but the last thing you wanted was to have her relive what Sue put her through. Even if it was just by remembering.
Luckily, Sarah nodded after a few moments. Whether or not she believed you, she didn’t mention it. “Oh well he’s probably just tired then. I know I tend to forget things when I’m not running on enough sleep.”
You chuckled in agreement, handing her back the book you had been looking at. “Yeah.”
A comfortable silence fell as Sarah began to re-stack the shelf again. You took the chance to look at her, noticing the differences since the last time you saw her. Namjoon had explained that Hybrids were able to sense everyone’s emotions and that depending on how severe they were, another person’s emotions could affect theirs as well.
When you had gotten the call from Sarah, her voice breaking over the line as she sobbed into the phone, scaring both you and Namjoon – who had been standing nearby and heard it all clear as day – while you hurried to gather your things to go see her. Before even reaching the car, you knew it was bad. She hadn’t even locked her door so when you arrived at her apartment that day, you had walked right in and found her curled up in bed, cheeks blotchy as she cried into her pillow.
It never crossed your mind that by telling Sue about what Colin had been doing would result in the choices that had been made. Guilt had been an unwelcomed guest in your heart and mind during Sarah and Hoseok’s separation. Despite all your attempts to reign in your emotions at home that night, Namjoon had picked up on them so much that as soon as he came home, he was right there by your side, hugging and sweetly kissing you and your Mate Mark, reassuring you that was never going to happen between the two of you.
Despite his promises, it already felt like there was a rift between you and him.
“How are you and Hoseok?” You asked.
Sarah smiled as she ran a hand through her hair, revealing the side of her neck where her own Mate Mark was. To any onlooker – and with some distance – every Mate Mark looked like an identical scar from a bite. Someone who you never met could have one that look just like yours, but upon closer inspection, it was easy to tell that no two were alike. How could they be identical? Namjoon’s jaw and teeth were different from Hoseok’s. It was the finer details; the grooves and ridges were their own individual shape.
“Amazing,” Sarah breathed out. “It’s just so good to have him back home. He finally got the rest of his belongings from Sue since she’s planning on moving, but it finally feels like everything is going right for us.”
It appeared that way too. There was a life in Sarah’s eyes that when you had gone to check on her with Hoseok gone, had been burnt out. You were scared that she was going to fall into a depressive state without him, but it was a miracle that she managed to fight against it and try to live her life, even when her Mate had been taken away.
A part of you wanted to believe that, if for some reason you lost Namjoon, you’d be able to continue living. Deep down however, you knew how easy it would be slip under the covers and not care, and not know that the days were blending together.
It did surprise you how easily she had mentioned Sue though. “Have you heard much from her?”
The smile on her face flickered, and you thought that maybe you had made a mistake.
“No. Actually, Hoseok’s been the one to talk to her when it came to scheduling a time to go over and pack his stuff.” Her fingers tightened around a hardcover and somewhere in the store, the clock chimed at the half hour. “I’m trying, but…it’s going to be a long time.”
Reaching over, you gently squeezed her shoulder as her words died out, not needing an explanation for how she felt. You knew what she meant and if you were being honest, if someone had done the same to you and Namjoon, you didn’t think you’d ever be able to forgive them.
It was as she was taking a deep breath that Sarah tapped the book and snapped her finger at you, drawing a grin out of you. “Since you’re on vacation, you can give these to Namjoon to look at.”
She hurried to the desk, leaving you to take your time as you stood up, lower back popping as you joined her. By the time you leaned on the wooden desk, Sarah had a stack of six hardcovers waiting for you. The pages were yellowed and upon opening the top one, the musty smell of an aged book greeted you. While you loved to read as well, you didn’t get overly excited over the famous book smell that you knew Namjoon and Sarah died for.
“I found them at this flea market Hoseok and I went to,” Sarah explained, opening up another one. The text was small and centered, and as you took a closer look, you realized that they were books of poetry.
“How much for them?” You asked, turning your purse to pull out your wallet.
Sarah waved her fingers though, lightly slapping your hand when you still tried to take it out. “Don’t worry about it. They’re a gift.”
“Are you sure?”
“If you do not accept these on Namjoon’s half, I will pick up the phone and call your Grandmother right now Missy,” Sarah playfully threatened, her smile about ready to break her face in half.
For a moment, there was silence in the little shop, but it didn’t last long as you both broke out in laughter. Even as you agreed and she bagged them up for you, you slipped a few dollars in the little donation jar that her boss insisted be put out.
“Now, why don’t you head home,” Sarah suggested, walking around the desk, and hugged you. “Steal a nap before Namjoon comes home tonight.”
“He’s probably going to be working until midnight again,” you said, accepting the bag.
But Sarah smirked at you, wiggling her eyebrows in a way that sent you into a fit of giggles. “Not unless you call him and tell him that you need him.”
“You are just as bad as my Grandmother,” you teased, walking towards the door.
Sarah just laughed as you headed outside, shaking your head in amusement. You knew that they meant well, but it was starting to worry you that everyone seemed to be concerned about your sex life with Namjoon, or apparently, the lack of one.
It wasn’t as if you didn’t have one – Namjoon had his heats like every other Hybrid – with everything that’s been going on, there just hadn’t been time to relax and get in the mood. You knew that Sarah was still relatively newly mated to Hoseok, so it wouldn’t surprise you if they were going at it whenever the desire struck.
But as you got into the car, the books for Namjoon carefully sitting on the passenger seat, you weren’t able to stop thinking about it. It felt like forever since Namjoon indicated that he wanted more than a few kisses or a few minutes of cuddling.
Again, despite knowing his love for you, your mind wandered to the other place, hands gripping the steering wheel tighter than usual. He hadn’t always had to stay so late, so why had things changed so suddenly?

without a doubt
rowan x lorcan, modern au, yulemas au, word count: 2098
“Darling, please,” his boyfriend laughs, “stop pouting.”
Rowan frowns and tucks his chin into the collar of his hoodie. Lorcan’s hoodie, actually. “I am not pouting. I’m upset.”
Through the screen of the laptop, Lorcan’s image is grainy. His smile dims slightly, “I know. I’m sorry, Ro. I was really sure that we would be done by now.” He flicks his eyes to the side and the muscles in his sharp jaw feather. His dark brows lower and he mutters, “I never would’ve taken it if I knew I’d be gone this long.”
“I know, my love,” Rowan whispers, subtly wiping away the silver that lines his eyes. “But this is your dream. It’s always been your dream, L. I can’t be the reason you give that all up, you know?”
Lorcan nods, that frown still on his fiercely beautiful face. He looks down and picks at his bedspread, “Yeah, I know.” Quickly, he snaps his head up, his eyes ablaze, “I would though. I’d give it all up for you, if you asked.”
The words rest on the tip of his tongue. Rowan almost blurts them out, but he doesn’t. Instead he smiles softly to hide the aching, yearning feeling that never quite dulls. “But I’m not asking you. So you’re stuck there.”
Lorcan laughs humorlessly and his eyes sparkle, “Yeah, I know.” It falls kind of flat. If they were together, Rowan would kiss him and they would forget all about it all. “Oh, I got you your Yulemas gift today. Putting it in the mail tomorrow.”
“Oh, really? Will I like it?” Rowan shifts to lie on his stomach and props his chin up on a ring-laden fist.
“Rowan Whitethorn!” Lorcan gives him an offended look, “When have I ever gotten you something you haven’t liked?”
Rowan laughs and concedes, “You’re right, you’re right. You truly are the gift master.”
“I know,” Lorcan replies smugly. He stretches his bare arms above his head and tucks his hands behind him, his head cradled by his inked biceps. “You’re a very… appreciative receiver.” With his cocky grin, there’s no way to ignore the implication.
An outraged gasp escapes Rowan, “Are you calling me a whore?”
Lorcan laughs, “No, I am not calling you a whore. You can have the qualities of a label and not be the label.”
“You are calling me a whore! Oh my gods, I hate you,” Rowan complains, his green eyes narrowed in warning. “Maybe it’s a good thing you aren’t here ‘cause I could kill you right now.”
“Oh, I love it when you sweet talk me, baby. Reminds me of how you stole my heart.”
Rowan snorts and grabs a pillow to cushion his chin, “I love you. And I wish I could say it in person.”
His boyfriend’s face softens. Lorcan says back, “I love you too and I wish you could hear it for real.”
They smile at each other, eyes filled with longing and reverent adoration. Until hours later, when they both fall asleep without bothering to hang up, they talk about everything and nothing at all. It mends their incomplete souls, even if just for a moment.
 ☽ ☼ ☾
“Happy Yulemas Eve!”
Rowan smiles and accepts the hug Aelin pulls him into, “Happy Yulemas Eve, Fireheart. Is everyone here already?” He looks over his friend’s head down the front hall of her apartment.
They step back and Aelin nods, “Yeah, they’re all here. Well, almost.”
He nods and steps in, “Yeah… he- he tried, you know, but there wasn’t any way.” Rowan shrugs his coat off and hangs it up. “It’s fine. He promised to call and say ‘hey’ later, during presents.”
The golden-haired woman grins and takes his bag of gifts, “That’ll be nice - we all miss him. Now,” she tucks her hand into his elbow and tugs him in, “come along, there’s lots to do!”
In the open-concept living room, their friends are already there, at varying levels of sobriety. They call out their cheerful greetings as Aelin puts Rowan’s presents beneath the tree. Fenrys surges to his feet, “Rowan!”
Rowan laughs at the sight of his drunken friend, “Hey, bud. How are you doing?”
“I’m very, very, very good,” Fenrys slurs. “Ress is here, did you see?” He casts an adoring look at his boyfriend, who blushes like always. “He’s my boyfriend.”
“I know, Fen,” Rowan says, his bright grin not quite reaching his eyes.
“Oh! Oh no, I’ve upset you,” Fenrys exclaims, his face twisted in wasted anguish. He throws his arms around Rowan and pats the top of his head, “Oh, it’s ok, it’s ok. Lor’s a miserable misan—”
“Ok, Fenrys, why don’t we go somewhere else, hmm?” Lysandra interjects, pulling Fenrys away. She kisses Rowan’s cheek, pushing him to the kitchen like a perfect hostess should. “There’s food and drinks in the kitchen and dinner will be ready in half an hour - help yourself, ‘kay?”
Rowan nods and walks to the kitchen, quietly filling a plate. A petite woman slips up to him, a drink in hand for him, “Hello, Rowan. How are you?”
He smiles as he pops an olive into his mouth, “Hey, El.” Rowan shrugs, “I’m… fine. I’m fine. Really, it’s…”
“Fine?” Elide suggests, a cheeky grin on her heart-shaped face.
“Yeah,” Rowan sighs.
She leans against him, rubbing his back soothingly, “Ok, well, c’mon to the living room and sit with me. Borte and Aelin are going at it again.” Elide pulls him to the couch without waiting for his response.
For a while, Rowan forgets about being alone. Around him, his family talks animatedly, egging the two most chaotic members on as they battle over the finale to some show they’re both obsessed with. The others watch with rapt attention, laughing outrageously at the things Borte and Aelin say.
In a lull of silence, Rowan stands up, “I’m going to step out for a bit. Too warm.” He walks to the balcony as the conversation resumes, albeit much quieter. Everyone turns to their respective partners, whispering soft nothings and laughing at stupid jokes. His breath hitches and Rowan looks to the kitchen just in time to see Lysandra hold a sprig of mistletoe over Aelin’s head and the couple kisses, smiling as they press their lips together.
His chest squeezes painfully tight. Tears burn his eyes and Rowan rushes outside. It’s bitterly cold and the sharp winter wind nips at his face. He sniffles, blowing out a long breath to keep his tears at bay. It’s stupid.
In the pocket of his oversized corduroys, Rowan feels his phone buzz. He hastily pulls it out with clumsy, half-frozen fingers. He expects to see Lorcan’s contact flashing over the screen with a waiting call, but all he sees is a text message.
lover boy <3: srry ro smthng came up
lover boy <3: can’t call tn
lover boy <3: luv u
All his air escapes him in a pathetic, teary exhale. Rowan shakes his head in disbelief and types back quickly.
pretty boy: are you sure? i really miss you
lover boy <3: i’ll call tmrw
lover boy <3: promise
Rowan sighs and replies resignedly.
pretty boy: ok love
pretty boy: i love you too
Rowan shuts his phone off and wipes his eyes, cursing himself for his tears.
Aren’t you ashamed of yourself? Asks a hissing voice. His ears burn in shame. He’s finally doing what he’s always wanted to - why aren’t you happy for him? He would be happy for you.
Rowan shakes his head to dispel the thoughts and puts his phone in his pocket. He pushes his silver-blond curls off and braces his hands against the railing. After a few minutes, the glass door slides open and someone steps out, “Ro? Is everything alright? We’re going to open gifts now.”
“Y-yeah, everything’s fine. Something came up and Lor can’t call tonight.” He turns, shrugging his shoulder up. “It’s fine.” Rowan drags his red and silver lined eyes up to Aelin’s. “I’m fine.”
“Oh, honey, I’m so sorry.” She steps out and takes his hand, “Come on, we’ve got presents.”
He smiles and lets her pull him inside. He’s ushered to a seat and handed a mug of mulled wine.
Aelin peruses the available gifts and picks a slim box up, “And this one is for Rowan, from his very own lover boy.” She passes it to Rowan who takes it. He traces the tip of his finger over the label, smiling at his boyfriend’s looping handwriting.
Rowan doesn’t bother to be patient and tears into it, not noticing the tittering giggles and scurrying feet behind him. He tosses the wrapping paper to the side and eases the top of the box off.
Whatever’s inside is covered in tissue paper. Rowan carefully opens it, puzzled as he sees a folded slip of paper. He takes it out and glances into the box, but there’s nothing more. “Oh.” He unfolds it and reads it quickly.
turn around - L
Rowan frowns and puts the box down. “What is this?” He looks up and their faces are pink with barely controlled glee. “Guys, what did you do?”
From behind him, he hears a dry, dark chuckle. “Won’t you turn around, my darling?”
A half sob escapes Rowan and he stands up, the note fluttering to the floor as he turns. In the hall, Lorcan stands. He smiles a tired, weary smile, but it’s lazy and easy and golden and Lorcan. “Lor?” Rowan runs towards him, crashing into his boyfriend. He clutches at the back of Lorcan’s jacket, his smile blinding.
Lorcan laughs quietly and pulls Rowan close, his big arms around the green-eyed man’s waist, “Hey, Ro.”
“Hi,” Rowan whispers, tears caught in his lashes. “Are you really here?” He lifts his head, eyes searching Lorcan’s face.
Instead of answering, Lorcan closes the distance between them and kisses Rowan deeply. Rowan melts into the embrace and softly sighs his boyfriend’s name, slim fingers sliding into dark hair.
“Good gods, get a room already,” Aelin heckles cheerily.
Lorcan bites Rowan’s lower lip and flips Aelin off as he slides his tongue over Rowan’s. Rowan hums sweetly and pulls away, his lip tucked between his teeth, “What are you doing here? What about work?”
“I quit,” Lorcan says proudly, his eyes bright.
Rowan gapes at him and pushes his boyfriend backwards, “You what? Lorcan!” He smacks his boyfriend’s shoulder, “You love that job. Oh my gods, you did this for me, didn’t you? Didn’t you?”
Lorcan grins widely, tugging Rowan back into his arms, “I’m sorry, pretty boy, but I did. No matter how much I liked it, I couldn’t be without you for that long.”
“But,” Rowan makes a helpless gesture, not entirely sure why he’s fighting this, “you love that job.”
“Yeah,” Lorcan bumps the tip of his cold nose into Rowan’s and pecks his lips, “but I love you more. I couldn’t enjoy it ‘cause I was missing you all the time.”
Rowan can’t articulate everything he wants to say, so he hopes his kiss does it for him, “I love you so much. So much, love.” He lazily cradles the back of Lorcan’s head.
“Hellas below, you have no idea how badly I’ve wanted to hear that for real,” Lorcan murmurs. “I love love love you.”
Behind them, their friends start to catcall and whistle in appreciation. They break apart, cheeks burning and lips love-bitten. Reluctantly, the couple walks into the living room. Rowan sits down in the oversized armchair and picks up his drink. As Lorcan goes around, saying hello to everyone, Aelin perches herself on the arm of Rowan’s seat and toys with his light curls, “So, how do you like your gift?”
“You- this was you? You did this for me?”
“Oh,” she laughs merrily, “I wish I could take credit for it, but I only helped with the getting him here. This idea was all your mans.” Aelin tilts her head to the side, “Best Yulemas ever?”
Rowan looks up to find Lorcan already looking his way. The dark-haired man walks over to him and bumps Aelin out of the way with an expert hip check, “What are you two talking about?” Lorcan sits down beside Rowan and slides his hand into the hair at the back of Rowan’s head.
Rowan rests his chin on Lorcan’s shoulder and kisses the skin beneath his jaw, “This being the best Yulemas ever.”
“Really? That good, hmm?”
“Mmm,” Rowan smiles and kisses him softly, “without a doubt.” He nuzzles his nose against Lorcan’s, “Best Yulemas ever.”

This is our entry for the Fairy Tail Reverse Bang, which was a really fun event hosted by @ftguildevents.
We were lucky enough to be paired with @x-thekid who is the wonderful artist behind this fan art. You can see her post here. Please take a moment to let her know how much you liked her art!
A few notes:
This story touches upon three in-game quests - Isosceles or Love Triangle (Juvia Character Story), Monster Outbreak from the Very Difficult Requests Set DLC, and The Search for the Supreme Scent (Ichiya Character Story).
This AU has elements of Fairy Tail canon, game canon, as well as game elements we have attempted to incorporate into the story. An example of this is duels, which is an in-game mechanism and not at all as dramatic as Gray might make them sound. ;)
In the game all the playable characters are always at Fairy Tail, this includes Jellal, Ichiya, Kagura, Sting, Rogue, Lyon and Chelia.
We had a lot of fun working on this story and we hope you enjoy it! It is four chapters long and we will post a chapter daily until it is done.
Chapter 1
Natsu entered the newly restored Fairy Tail Guild in his usual manner, kicking the door open and announcing his presence.
“I’m back!”
Only a few people looked up from what they were doing, accustomed as they were to his loud entrances.
“Morning Natsu,” Lucy greeted from her spot at their team table.
“Oh, hey Lucy,” Natsu walked over to the table, plopping down across from her while Happy went off searching for the other Exceeds.
“Are you taking a job with the slayers today, or are we going on a team job?” Lucy asked, and from the look on her face, he could tell which answer she was hoping for.
“No rent money again?” he asked with a knowing smile.
“I’ve been going on a few requests with Levy and the others, but the jobs they take don’t tend to pay as much,” she explained quickly. “Although,” she teased, “there’s definitely a lot less destruction.”
Natsu chuckled. He certainly couldn’t say the same of the jobs he’d been going on. He was bad enough on his own, but adding Sting and Gajeel to the equation, it soon grew beyond anything he could have imagined.
“Sorry, Sting and Rogue should be here any minute.”
“Oh well, I’m sure I’ll figure something out,” Lucy began, but her voice was drowned out somewhat unexpectedly.
“For the last time. NO,” Gray’s yells cut through all conversations, and everyone turned to see what was happening. “I don’t want to go on another job with you!”
Gray stood by the request board, holding a flyer in his hand. His mouth was set in a hard line, but his fingers moved ever closer to the hem of his shirt, which Natsu knew meant he was anxious. Juvia stood next to him, leaving barely any space between them, as she usually did. Her eyes filled with tears at Gray’s tone, her gaze imploring him to change his mind, but it seemed for once the ice mage was determined not to back down.
Natsu heard the murmurs start, and given the things that were being said, he hoped Gray wasn’t able to.
“But Gray-sama, we make a perfect team,” Juvia pleaded, still determined to get her way, “Our magics are compatible, and Juvia can protect you better than anyone.”
“I don’t need protecting,” Gray scowled, crossing his arms over his chest. “What I need is a partner who can keep their head on the job, and not on me.”
“Juvia can do that!” Juvia exclaimed, utterly oblivious to the rebuke. Her tears disappeared, and in her excitement, she grabbed on to Gray’s arm.
Gray shook himself free from her grasp and took a step back. “I said, NO,” he repeated firmly.
The guild’s murmurs only grew louder and more disapproving of Gray as Juvia once again began to cry, running off towards one of the rear exits that led to the pool. Many heads turned to follow her, some even sparing sympathetic looks, but no one offered to check on her, and after a few awkward seconds, Gajeel sighed and stepped up to the task. Natsu couldn’t help but feel bad for his rival, although his mind was swimming from what he’d just seen. Gray, however, seemed to have had enough. One second he was there, the next he was gone, and all that could be heard was the sound of the heavy guild doors slamming shut.
Natsu was as shocked as everyone else. Gray had always had a temper. He knew that better than anyone, but it was unlike him to lash out at any of the girls.
“What was that about?” he asked Lucy, who, like Mira, usually knew just about everything that went on in the guild.
Lucy peered at the guild doors thoughtfully and shrugged, “I guess she finally pushed too hard.”
“I thought he liked going on jobs with her,” Natsu commented, his brows furrowing in confusion when Lucy began to laugh.
“You really have been gone a lot, haven’t you?”
“What do you mean?” he frowned, not liking that there was something about Gray he didn’t know.
“All I know is last week he practically begged me to go on a job with the two of them,” Lucy confided, “I thought Juvia was going to find a way to stab me with her eyes. It was so awkward.”
She glanced around the guild to make sure no one was paying any attention to them before revealing, “He looked miserable too. And the sad thing was when I asked him why he wanted me there,” Lucy paused, looking pained by her next words, “He said he didn’t feel like his body was safe around her.”
Natsu tried to come up with some sort of retort but found he couldn’t focus on anything but the maelstrom of emotions brewing inside him at hearing those words. On the one hand, he was cautiously hopeful that maybe Gajeel had been right when he’d told him he was reading too much into Gray’s relationship with Juvia. But that was short-lived. It was soon replaced by an increasing fury at the idea of Gray feeling that way about someone in their guild- the one place where they should all feel safe. “Aren’t Cana’s drinks great?” Erza commented as she joined them at the table, holding a mug full of some strawberry smelling concoction, and saving Natsu from having to come up with a reply.
“They sure are,” Lucy agreed, seeming just as relieved to change the subject. “Just the thing before going on a job.”
His two friends continued talking about some of the other upgrades they had added to the guild while Natsu struggled to control himself. He could understand being angry on Gray’s behalf, but this rage flowing through him seemed excessive, and it disturbed him.
Gray had always been able to take care of himself. He didn’t need protection from anyone, least of all him. Natsu tried to take part in the conversation around him when Juvia happened to walk past him. The hair on the back of his neck rose, and to his great shock, he found himself growling at her, his fists balled and ready to attack. Juvia gaped at him before hurrying away from their table.
Lucy glanced at him curiously while Erza’s eyes narrowed at the display. Natsu could already tell he was in for it, and he wasn’t disappointed when he felt the sharp sting of her fist connecting with his head.
“For goodness sake, pull yourself together, Natsu! Is that what you slayers do on these jobs, act like wild animals?”
“Of course not!” he complained, rubbing his head, even as he tried to figure out what the hell had just happened.
“Did we miss something?” Sting Eucliffe asked as he promptly shoved Natsu further into the booth to make room for him and Rogue. “We saw Gray as we came in. He looks pissed.”
Natsu shrugged in reply, not wanting to get into what had happened.
“Are Gajeel and Wendy here yet?” Rogue asked, looking around the guild for the other slayers.
Natsu could tell the moment Gray reentered the guild, not just by the surge of his familiar scent but also by the whispers. When the ice mage took his seat at their table, Natsu made sure to look down at the tabletop so that Gray wouldn’t be able to see his face, just in case it betrayed his feelings.
Natsu could feel the guild’s temperature drop a few degrees as soon as Gray noticed Sting and Rogue. “Great, you two are here again.”
“Gray!” Erza scolded, “Is that any way to talk to our friends?”
Gray covered his eyes with his hand in what Natsu recognized as a futile attempt to control himself. A few moments later, he fixed his gaze on Natsu and scoffed, “So I’m guessing you’re going off with them again today?”
Natsu nodded, not trusting his words not to anger Gray further when he was so clearly holding on by a tenuous thread.
“When you talked to us about this, you said this shit was only going to be once a week,” Gray reminded him.
“I haven’t been gone that often,” Natsu protested, even though he knew it was certainly more than they had initially planned. “I don’t hear anyone else complaining.”
“Oh, believe me, we’ve all done plenty of complaining. You just haven’t been around to hear it. Lucy can’t make her rent from the jobs she can manage on her own.”
“If you’re so worried about Lucy, why don’t you go on a job with her?” Natsu challenged.
“Hey!” Lucy snapped, “Leave me out of this.”
“That’s not the point, and you know it,” Gray pinched the bridge of his nose, “Ugh, you’re giving me a headache.”
“What’s the matter, Princess?” Natsu goaded, “You miss me?”
“Don’t put words in my mouth, Flame Brain. You’re neglecting your friends- our team- to go off to play with the other dragon slayers.” To make matters worse, Sting decided to butt into the conversation. “Nah, we’re not playing! We’re, uh...pushing each other to get stronger!” he grinned, casually resting his elbow on Natsu’s shoulder. “You know, similar magic and all that.”
“Oh God,” Rogue hid his face behind his hand, looking ready to slide underneath the table.
“Did you just say I’m weak?” Gray spat furiously.
“Huh? Where did you get that from?”
“Just shut up, you’re only making things worse,” Natsu scolded his friend.
“Natsu! You can’t talk to Sabertooth’s Guild Master like that!” Erza berated, horrified by his words.
“What?! He doesn’t care!”
“That’s it!” Gray pounded his fist on the table, “I challenge you to a duel!”
If looks could kill, Sting would have dropped dead that very second.
“Yes, that’s a great idea!” Lyon exclaimed, suddenly appearing next to Gray. “If Sting wins, Natsu and Wendy can go to Sabertooth. And if you win, they can stay in Fairy Tail!” “Not this crap again!” Gray scowled at his foster brother. “Where the hell did you even come from? And why are you people here all the time?!” he complained, raising his hands in disbelief at all the non-Fairy Tail mages lounging around. “Don’t you have your own guilds?”
“I don’t see what your problem is, “ Lyon shrugged, “seems to me like it would fix everything.”
“Oh, hell no, I do not agree to that,” Natsu chimed in, “I love you guys, but I am a Fairy Tail wizard.”
“What the hell, Flame Brain, are you implying I’m going to lose to him?” Gray scoffed, looking offended, although Natsu thought he caught a glimpse of hurt in the ice mage’s expression for a moment.
“What?! I didn’t say that!” Natsu objected, but Gray refused to look at him.
“Who even said we wanted you?” Rogue pointed out, even though it was evident that Sting’s eyes were already lit up at the idea of a challenge.
“ENOUGH!” Erza shrieked, and when they continued to bicker despite her outburst, she muttered, “I’m surrounded by complete idiots!”
She watched them for another minute, looking from one wizard to the next. She grabbed Natsu and Gray by the collar, swiftly realizing they were the only two she could do anything about. Knocking their heads together, she managed to shut up Sting, Rogue, and Lyon, who could only stare at her in shock.
“They’re all insane,” Rogue muttered under his breath, but thankfully Sting was the only one to hear him.
“I’m sorry I’m late. Carla wanted to stop at the market and-,” Wendy stopped mid-sentence, marking the unnatural quiet at a table filled with people known for their loudness. She peered closer, noticing Natsu and Gray glaring at each other and sporting two large bumps on their heads. “Did I miss something?”
She moved over to their side of the table, calling on her magic to heal them, although this didn’t seem to ease their hostility in the slightest.
Thankfully the awkwardness was interrupted by Master Makarov making his way over to the stage.
“Settle down brats, I have an announcement to make,” Makarov yelled from the stage, waiting for a few minutes until he was sure he had everyone’s attention. Peering at the faces that were now intent on him, he remarked cheerfully, “Oh good, I see many of our friends are here! This concerns you too.”
“Do you know what this is about, Erza?” Lucy whispered, but Erza only shook her head.
“We have been through a lot in the last couple of years. All of you have shown courage and skill far beyond your years, and I am incredibly proud of you.” Makarov beamed.
“Now, about eight years ago, we were rudely interrupted in the middle of one of our time-honored traditions, and I, for one, think it’s time we finish what we started.”
“S-Class Trials?” Natsu and Gray chorused eagerly.
“Indeed!” Makarov confirmed with a wide grin, “When I informed the Council of my intentions, they asked that I open the testing up to the other guilds since we currently have the best setup for it. For that reason, the rules have changed a bit.”
“There will be no nominations this time. As far as I’m concerned, you have all more than proven yourselves, so anyone who feels ready is welcome to participate. Teams can have up to five members and may include wizards from different guilds. You may ask one S-Class Wizard to be part of your team if you wish. Any team that completes every exam phase successfully will see all its members promoted to S-Class. The exam will once again take place on Tenrou Island."
“That’s all I have for now. I will have more details on the test itself once I have spoken to the other Guild Masters,” Makarov peered down at Sting and Rogue with a smile. “Master Sting, am I right to assume you and Rogue will be participating?”
"Of course we are!" Sting was almost glowing with excitement, and even Rogue gave an eager nod.
“Alright then, we’ll figure out a way to keep you in the loop so you can pass the information along to the rest of your guild,” Makarov informed him, “We’ll talk about it later.”
Sting nodded in agreement, and Makarov turned his attention back to the others, “ I want you all to think about whether you will take part in the exam or not. I firmly believe you’re all capable of this, but only you can decide if you’re up to it. I’ll need your response by the end of the week, along with a list of your team members.”
With that, Makarov walked off the stage and made his way over to Cana’s bar, climbing onto a stool and ordering a drink. Everyone began to talk all at once, the guild’s noise rising to almost unbearable proportions for the dragon slayers.
Natsu couldn’t contain his excitement any more than the others; he would finally become S-Class! Something he and Gray had dreamed of doing from the moment Erza had joined their ranks so many years ago. He looked towards where Gray had been sitting just a few minutes earlier, only to find the seat empty.

Tumblr media
“You are being really naughty, babe” said a man on a mask and a knife on his hand. You were tied to a table with your hands and feet immobilized, and you could feel the tip of the weapon right on your stomach as you were only in your underwear. You flinched as it was cold, but you were sure that you could take it.
“I’m not your babe, asshole” you responded, making him even more angry. He didn’t hesitate, and with a quick move he stabbed you right in the middle of your naked torso. You squealed, a tear falling down your cheek. The mystery man let out a little laugh and removed the mask that was hiding his face. He stared at you with his dark black eyes and came closer to you to whisper in your ear.
“You’re gonna wish you hadn’t said that.”
And then everything went black.
You woke up breathing heavily and with sweat running down your forehead. The fear installed itself in your mind, taking control of your thoughts and emotions. It was hard for you to keep your breathing even after that awful dream, just like had happened many times before. You shut your eyes while sitting down and tried to focus on positive things but, by doing so, those dark eyes appeared in front of you and made it ten times worse. Your hands travelled to your head, trying to keep out the memory of what had happened to you last month.
It was clear that you didn’t get over that completely. Your boyfriend and team partner Spencer Reid had been there to help you go through it all, but you couldn’t help falling again in that never-ending spiral of panic and anxiety you thought you’ve left behind. Of course no one expected you to move on so quickly as you were about to die if it wasn’t for the BAU team, but it was being harder than you thought it would be. You didn’t get it, though; why was your dream so much eviler than what actually happened? A one-on-one confrontation does not resemble to dying tied to a table, but the feelings were the same and those brought the past back.
“Y/n? Are you ok?” Spencer sat on the bed next to you when he felt you move, and placed his hand on your shoulder. You shook your head in response, letting his arms surround you on a tight hug. Your breathing was still uneven and fast, and everything you did to slow it down ended up in a failure. “Breathe with me, y/n. Just breathe with me.” Spencer’s voice was rough as he had just woken up but it was soothing and calming. You placed your forehead against his and your hand on his chest, right above his heart, so you could sense his heartbeats. He took a deep breath that you imitated while he rubbed his hand up and down your back.
Slowly, you started to calm down. After a few minutes of breathing, both of you stayed silent. You took your hand out of his chest and melted against him. The tears that had been held back started to blurt out and all you wanted was to be close to Spencer forever. He tightened his grip, your sobs being the only sound that filled the room. He hated seeing you like this, and even though it had happened before, it was hard for him to control his own emotions for you. You needed someone stable who could hold you, and he had to be that person. He wanted to.
“Do you wanna lay down?” he asked softly against your hair, brushing it with his hand. You gave him a little nod before throwing yourself again in bed. Your head was on Spencer’s chest, his heartbeats quieting your demons one more time. His arms never let go of your body, keeping you close to him, keeping you safe.
“Thank you” you managed to say, eyes closed at the feeling of his hands petting your hair. You were so grateful for having him, but you didn’t have enough strength to say something else. Your arms squeezed his torso, just to show him that you really meant it.
“I’ll always be here for you, y/n. There’s no need to thank me” you looked up at your boyfriend, his eyes shining in the darkness and his messy hair falling on his face. You were amazed by his beauty and kindness. You never wanted to be with somebody else.
“You promise?”
“I promise” a little smile formed on your face when his hand reached up to clear some of the tears that still rolled through your cheeks. You hugged him again, this time with your mind at ease.
“I love you” you whispered, your body turning off and falling asleep almost immediately. You didn’t hear it, but Spencer replied.
“I love you more.”
...
The alarm went off and you had to make an effort to stir your arm to turn it off. You stayed in your position for a couple of minutes, waiting for Spencer to hug you from behind like he always did in the mornings. But that day wasn’t the case. You turned around just to find the other side of the bed empty and sighed. You were already missing his touch and warmness.
You flinched as you stood up, stretching your arms above your head. Through the window entered some rays of sun that illuminated the room. The trees outside waved a little and a shiver ran down your spine, causing you to cross your arms on your chest. A hint of a smile appeared on your face; you loved windy days, it reminded you of times where problems didn’t exist and there was only happiness.
The smell of coffee returned you to reality, and you couldn’t help but to follow it to the source. Walking barefoot through the hallway you arrived at the kitchen, where you saw Spencer from behind. As soon as he heard you, he turned to you with a smile and with a take-out mug on his hand.
“Hey” you greeted him, the familiar routine finally occurring.
“Hey, I made you coffee” he extended the mug to you, your hands touching casually when you grabbed it. The warmth irradiating from it to your skin caused chills inside of you. You hadn’t noticed how cold you actually were. “How did you sleep?”
“I’ve had better nights” you admitted with a sigh. “I’ll manage it. I just need to find a way.”
“It’s the third time this week, y/n” you really didn’t want to think about it. To overcome the nightly panic attacks in the past, it took you meeting and opening to Spencer. He’d been way more helpful than all the therapy and pills you’d taken. But now that they were back, you really didn’t know how to handle them, and neither did Spencer. You could see how worried he was about your mental health and it made your heart ache to not be able to remove the sadness you saw in him. The last thing you wanted was to drag his pure soul into your own personal hell.
“I know but… I just need time. That’s it” you gave him a comforting smile because you thought he needed to see one, even if you had to force it a little. He smiled back, but with sorrow in his eyes. Even though he knew he did the best he could, he just wished he could’ve done more. You were his sunshine; he didn’t want your light to go away. You took a sip of coffee while your sight was fixed on Spencer’s clothes. He was wearing his typical sweater and work belt while you were still on your pajamas. “Why are you already dressed up?” you asked, your eyes travelling to the clock on the wall. It was 7:38 a.m. You choked and almost spilled your drink. “Oh my god, we’re horribly late!” You squealed. You usually woke up at 7 a.m. so you could have enough time to eat something and get ready –including the morning cuddles–. But now you had only 12 minutes before heading out to Quantico and you hadn’t done any of those things yet.
“Relax,” said Spencer with a chuckle “why do you think I made it to take out?” he pointed at your mug with his head. You looked at it confused, thinking about it for a second. Then you realized.
“You let me sleep” your eyes met his, and all you could see was pure love irradiating from them.
"I, uhm, calculated how long you take to get ready and set the alarm for another half an hour. I thought you might need it." Your heart melted, he was too precious for this world. He really meant it when he said he’d always be there for you.
You approached him, leaving the mug on the counter behind him, and you joined your lips to his. Without any doubt, his hands travelled to your waist, pulling you closer to his body. Your fingers wrapped around the hairs at the end of his neck, making the kiss more intense, but keeping it soft and delicate. You’ve missed this. More than eight hours without kissing him was hideous. “You’re the best” you whispered against his mouth, a smile spreading on both of your faces. “What did I do to deserve you?” you kissed him again, but this time it felt different. His hands started wandering up your shirt and you were loving the feeling of his skin on yours. However, you needed to get to work, and Spencer had to control himself the moment you tried to remove his sweater.
“I think you should get ready or else we’ll definitely be late” he hummed, breaking the contact between you two. You pecked his lips before swaying away from his arms.
“We can finish that later” you winked at him, then headed back to your room. He let out a little laugh while fixing his clothes; like he hadn’t thought about that already. He picked the mug you’ve left next to him and was about to take a little sip, hoping you wouldn’t notice, but your voice made him put it back down. “Oh, and don’t drink my coffee!” He rolled his eyes, but inside he was delighted. Regardless last night, you were still happy.
It was all that mattered.

Chapter 39 - SBT
Here it is!
Lucien and Mundy entered the hotel and Lucien pointed him straight to the lift. They got in and a young man was there, in his working uniform.
"Bonjour Bastien."
"Is it you, L?" Bastien asked, visibly confused as he stared at the bandaged face and the absence of a suit. The fact that the Frenchman was half carried by a friend of his puzzled the young man too.
"Oui…"
"Oh, Gosh, what happened?" Bastien pressed the button for the fifth floor and the lift took off.
"I got what I deserved." Lucien answered.
"Is it that serious?"
"Non, I am delighted to know that it is more fear than harm as we say in French. And please, meet my partner in crime, M."
"Hello, M."
"Hey, mate."
"Hold on, I've seen you before…" Bastien examined Mundy's face. "Do you know Maurice by any chance?"
"Yeah, used to work with him. Parents would also bring-"
"God yes, I remember! Your parents were the farmers, weren't they? I remember when I was a kid!" Bastien burst out.
"Yeah, that's them, yeah."
"Your mum used to make the best of jams, M."
Lucien looked up at Mundy. The man had a smile on his lips but the Frenchman could easily read the sadness on his face.
"Yeah, she did."
The lift stopped and after the jingle of a bell rang, the doors slid open.
"Merci, Bastien. And sorry I don't have anything for you today…"
"L, you don't need to, look here." Bastien removed his red and golden cap off his head. The young man had got a haircut. "I put a lot of your tips aside and could pay for my first proper haircut at a barber's!"
His hair was short on the sides and behind, a bit longer at the front with a longer tuft above his forehead that fell between his eyes. It was Lucien's haircut, minus the grey hair.
"Oh…" The Frenchman's jaw had dropped below the bandages.
"Very bad choice, mate, look at his ugly face eh. Lucky you, you don't look like him at all." Mundy teased, to lighten up the moment as he saw Lucien's shock.
"Bushman!"
Mundy chuckled and they got off of the elevator.
"See you later!" Bastien said as the doors of the lift slid slowly shut.
Mundy waited for the lift to close completely before asking.
"Right, which room is it?"
"Go straight and it's the first door on your right."
Mundy obeyed, still carrying part of the Frenchman's weight on his shoulders. He walked through the carpeted corridor and stopped at the door. Lucien unlocked it and both entered.
"Perle? Je suis rentré, mon bébé."
[I am back, my baby.]
Mundy held his breath for an instant. He heard noises like ticks against the wooden floor. He didn't understand where it came from until he saw Lucien bend down and kneel on the floor.
"Oh, you ok?"
A ball of white fluff came running, her claws trying to grip the sliding floor and she drifted on the varnished wooden planks. She crashed into Lucien's hand and mewled repeatedly.
"Oui, mon petit tu m'as manqué à moi aussi…"
[Yes, my little one, I have missed you too…]
Mundy stared and blushed. He didn't understand what Lucien had said but seeing him display affection caught the Aussie off guard.
"M, please…?"
Mundy helped him up.
"Let us take a seat on the sofa."
They both sat down and Lucien raised Perle to his face. She tapped the bandages, tried to tear it away from his face.
"Non, mon bébé, je ne peux pas l'enlever au moins pour quelques jours."
[No, my baby, I cannot take it off before a few days at least.]
"Meow!"
He kissed her fur and she started purring.
"Your sheila's not in?" Mundy looked away as if Lucien had been kissing a human lady.
"Yes, she is."
"Ah, ok." Mundy answered. "You sure you don't want me to leave you alone with her?" He stared at how Lucien was tickling his snow white kitten and how she squealed happily under his fingers.
"Please, M, have I not insisted enough?"
"Right, right, ok." Mundy wiped his hands on his thighs nervously.
Lucien played with Perle while Mundy looked around him at the living room of the Frenchman's suite. It was very spacious, the furniture was of a very modern style and oh Lord, the entire wall on his left was windowed; that is of course if we also forget about the massive piano standing there and looking as though it is not occupying as much space as it should.
Lucien noticed the awkward silence and how nervously Mundy's eyes darted from every detail in the room to the next.
"Something is the matter?"
"I'm… I'm waiting to meet Pearl… Uh, is it ok if I say it the English way? I can't say it like you do… uh… Payrle or something…"
"Meow."
"What are you talking about, Bushman? What are you waiting for?"
"Well, your sheila! You wanted me to meet her, didn't you?" Mundy whispered such that she wouldn't hear.
"What did you say her name was?" Lucien asked with a calm grin on his lips.
"Wasn't it Pearl?"
"Meow."
Lucien smiled and released the kitten from his hands.
"Say it again." He said.
"What the hell is wrong with you? I'm not gonna call for her!" Mundy whispered.
"Please, just say her name."
"Ugh…" He sighed. "Pearl."
"Meow." The kitten trotted to the Aussie and climbed on his lap.
"Oh, hello there, little kitty cat."
"Say it again."
"What the h-"
"Please." Lucien insisted.
"Pearl."
"Meow." She squealed under Mundy's fingers and started to purr under them. Oh yes, this one knew where to scratch perfectly…
Lucien looked down at the kitten and back at Mundy.
"What?" The Aussie was confused.
"Say it again."
"What are you not tellin' me again?"
"Please, Bushman."
"Right, last time… Pearl."
Lucien nodded at the kitten and Mundy looked at her in his hands.
"Meow?"
But still, the Aussie didn't seem to catch the drift and Lucien sighed at how oblivious he was.
"Look at her collar."
"Yeah, it's pink, she's a little girl. Gosh, is this silver…? Spook, you're one hell of a - No, are you shittin' me?!" Mundy burst out when he read the name on the silver pendant.
Perle.
"You named your kitty after your sheila?!"
"Non, I didn't! I am not that strange. Non, this is Perle."
"Meow?" Perle looked up at Lucien.
"Yeah, her name is the same as your lady's."
"Bushman, this is Perle."
"Meow."
"Stop repeatin' it, I got it, her name's Pearl!"
"Meow?" Perle's head swooshed to the Aussie.
"Bushman, there is no other female in this suite but her! Perle is my kitten, not my lady companion!"
"Meow!"
"What?!"
Lucien laughed at how shocked his guest was.
"All this time I thought she was a sheila!"
"I know!" Lucien answered and Perle brushed herself between their thighs, a bit on Lucien and a bit on Mundy.
"And you didn't tell me anything?!"
"Non."
"She's a kitten!" Mundy slapped his own forehead.
"Very observant."
"You bloody mongrel!"
Lucien chuckled.
"I do apologise."
"Why not tell me Pearl was your cat?"
"It is the way you react when you talk about her." Lucien answered, his eyes on the kitten again.
"What d'you mean?"
"I can feel it. Whenever you remind me that I have someone waiting for me at home, you have this particular tone of voice, this peculiar look on your face."
Mundy blushed slightly.
"Well, I don't know, I mean uh…"
"Neither do I. I don't know what you feel when you talk about her. At first, of course, I thought you envied the idea of having a partner and, if I am being honest, you told Lulu so, so I knew this was at least partly true. But it isn't just that." Lucien shook his index finger. "There is something else that I cannot understand…"
"And you smile at it." Mundy said, tilting his head on one side.
"Oui, I must admit I like mysteries. But we need to figure out something first." Lucien said.
"What's that?"
"Perle absolutely hates people. So far she hissed at anyone who came close to her. She also brings her claws out and threatens to strike anyone who gets close to either me or her. But look at her now…"
Perle was laying in Mundy's hands. She was purring as he scratched below her jaw and her neck, and the rhythm of her blinking slowed down.
"She is purring loudly and about to fall asleep in your very hands."
"Yeah, well, I'm good with animals, always been like that."
"And animals are good with you too it seems."
"Hm, yeah… So wait, I'm piecin' it up together now. This kitty is the reason why you don't want to kill Duchemin and end up dead yourself?"
"Partly, oui. If I was to go to the next life, no one would be left to take care of her. And she likes no one apart from me and you it seems. But presumably, if I die, that means that we will have caught Duchemin, and in this scenario, you would die too. Oh, look at her now, she is asleep…"
Mundy didn't dare move his hands in which the baby cat was sleeping.
"Yeah… She's adorable."
"She is indeed. Also, please excuse me, I will make that cup of coffee I promised you."
"D'you need help?"
Lucien managed to stand on his own.
"Non, merci. I think the pills are kicking in. I don't feel the aches as much. I should be able to do it on my own. Please keep an eye on her." Lucien answered and Mundy nodded.
The Aussie waited with Perle in his hands, feeling her tiny body inflate and deflate in his hands. On his side, Lucien was preparing a cup and a mug. He readied the coffee machine and waited, preparing a tray with a few nibbles.
"She'll grow up to have very long hair."
"Huh?!" Lucien got startled, he didn't hear nor expect Mundy to come and join him in the kitchen. "What are you doing here? Where is Perle?"
"In my hands still, look. And I came to make sure you wouldn't collapse or anythin'."
Mundy leaned on the kitchen top.
"Very posh-lookin' kitty with her long hair, I'm not surprised you chose her.”
"Don't they all have the same hair length?"
"Nah, hers is quite long, especially for a kitten."
"And you are wrong, I didn't choose her." Lucien answered, now dealing with the coffee and pouring it in the cup and the mug. "She chose me."
"Ah, so you went to a fancy pet shop and she kept on staring at you?"
"Non, Bushman. I found her at my hotel room door, dirty, shivering and hungry."
Mundy's eyebrows jumped.
"You rescued her?!"
"Shh… Don't be so loud, you will wake her up." Lucien answered and took the tray. "Come, let us have a seat."
They found themselves on the sofa again, the coffee and nibbles on the coffee table. Mundy put the kitten on his lap delicately and took the mug that Lucien handed him.
"Thanks, mate."
"My pleasure."
They both sipped on their coffee.
“Mh, that’s a good one… Doesn't taste too bitter. Did you put sugar?"
"Non, you saw me prepare it and you are right. You have quite the palate, M."
"Well, and you're one hell of a weird bloke."
"Why?"
"You really rescued her?" Mundy looked at Perle on his lap.
"Oui. At first I thought I would just feed her a bit of tuna and she would go away. I also thought she was grey but that was only the dirt that her fur had accumulated in the streets. Look here, you see these little scars?"
Lucien showed his hand.
"Yeah."
"That is from her, on the first day we met. She bit me and wouldn't let go. After she ate the tuna, I gave her a quick wash and seeing how hard she clung to me, I let her sleep with me."
"And she slept under you, eh?"
"Sort of, oui, she slept on my very pillow, next to my face."
"L, from what you are telling me, she loves you more than she would her own mum."
Lucien smiled tenderly.
"So do I." He answered.
"And after that, you ended up buyin’ her a silver collar, and little toys…?" Mundy pointed at a few of them on the floor.
"She has a harness and a leash too. I take her to Victoria's diner for breakfast or lunch sometimes."
"Meow…"
Perle woke up and brushed herself on the Aussie before climbing on Lucien's lap and lying on her back.
"Look at you, mon bébé, you are spoilt."
"Did you call her 'my baby'?"
Lucien scratched her neck and she yawned.
"Oui, I did. Does that surprise you?"
"Y-yeah, kind of."
"Why?"
"You're so… cold. It's just a bit odd to see you like that." Mundy answered honestly.
"Remember that Lulu and me are one and the same." Lucien explained while Perle purred, her fur being massaged slowly under his fingers. "The man you saw sing and cry is me."
"You could have faked it, eh. I saw you with Duchemin, you faked smiles like I've never seen before."
"It is different when I sing. I don't fake it. Music overtakes me." Lucien reached out to the coffee table for some biscuits and handed one to Mundy.
"Thanks, mate."
"Am I a mate now?" Lucien asked.
They exchanged a gaze and a smile.
"Possibly, yeah."
"Good." Lucien nodded to himself. "What privileges does the rank of mate grant me?"
"What? Mate, it's not like the army with ranks and stuff… It just means you're a friend."
"Well that is quite the recovery. I went from the man you wanted to kill yesterday night to a mate the next day. Besides," Lucien leaned back and Perle climbed up his chest to settle on his collar bone. She curled up there and purred on his shoulder. "I do imagine a man like you does not have a lot of those."
"A lot of what?" Mundy asked.
"Mates."
"Yeah, well… Used to have more before my parents passed. Now I have fewer ones."
"Can you name them?" Lucien asked.
"Why? Wanna see if someone's already got your name?" Mundy joked and took another sip.
"Highly unlikely, non, it is just to satisfy my curiosity."
Perle brushed herself on the bandaged face and purred. Lucien left a silent peck in her fur.
"Yeah, alright… uh… There's Eddy, Matt and Phil… Maurice counts too, I guess."
"And outside of your professional duties?" Lucien asked and Mundy frowned. His eyes went up to try and find at least one person he had kept in touch with outside of his job, but his prolonged silence was the answer that Lucien had expected.
"I see." The Frenchman said, and Mundy lowered his head in shame. "M?"
Mundy didn't raise his eyes.
"Perle, s'il te plaît, vas-y. Toi, il ne te résistera pas."
[Perle, go ahead, he won't resist you.]
Perle climbed down Lucien's shirt and jumped on Mundy's lap. He could feel her tiny claws grip the fabric as she climbed up his polo shirt and settled on his shoulder, brushing herself there. She mewled and purred.
"M?"
This time, Mundy raised his head.
"There is no shame to have. I have lived the same way. You are my first 'mate' in a long, long time."
Mundy smiled.
"Sorry about beatin' you up that hard. I was really pissed off."
"I understand, you had every right to feel so."
"Yeah, well… I beat you up hard, hm?"
"Oui, harder than I thought you could or would."
"Sorry… If that's any help, I can give you a hand to change your bandages. The Doc showed me how to do it and I did it with him."
Lucien's eyebrows jumped.
"You helped him?"
Mundy lowered his head.
"Yeah. I… I had the entire night to think it through while you were sleepin'."
Mundy leaned back on the sofa, Perle still on his shoulder.
"I don't know why you thought lyin' was better than just telling me the truth. But I won't kill you over this, of course not. I was just pissed off because I told Lulu things that I didn't want to tell you. But now you know them anyway."
"I told you a lot too." Lucien answered. "And I thought I could fool you into telling me more about yourself by sharing a bit more about myself too. The only catch is that of course you wouldn't know it was really me."
"Why did you want me to tell you stuff like that?" Mundy had that earnest look in his eyes, a look of genuine kindness.
"Because…" Lucien sighed. "Disclosing what I am or what I feel is not something that I… do? Do you remember when you told me that you envied Lulu's ability to talk openly about whatever he wanted without feeling odd about it? Well, I can't agree with you more. I wish I could just let my emotions speak more in me, let them guide me and see where they take me."
"Why don't you do it?" Mundy asked.
"For exactly the same reasons as you. I have done it in the past and it ruined me. I cannot afford to go through that again and I don't want to."
"Hm."
Mundy seemed a bit away, as if his mind had gone far.
"What is the matter?"
"There's something you said, I mean, something Lulu said, that I can't get out of my head now that I know you're him."
"What is it?"
"When you said that you… uh… you didn't only like sheilas…" Mundy's face turned as red as a brick. "I mean obviously if you don't want to talk about it or - or if it's a lie then that's fine but uh…"
"I told you, M. Everything I said to you as Lulu is the truth."
Mundy's eyes rose behind his yellow glasses to meet Lucien's.
"Hm, ok, alright…"
"Why are you so uncomfortable? You told me that you too could enjoy the company of men, non?"
"Y-yeah…" Mundy put a hand behind his neck nervously. "I mean… No one knows that about me. Even my parents didn't know."
Lucien smiled and put a hand on Mundy's shoulder, next to Perle.
"Then I feel privileged to know that you trusted me with this knowledge."
"I trusted Lulu." Mundy answered and Lucien felt something fall in his ribcage. He removed his hand off Mundy's shoulder. "It's hard to trust you."
The Frenchman sighed.
"I know. It is my curse. My tongue is tied by contract. I cannot say anything I want. I cannot say the truth of what I am, what I want and what I feel…"
"Why?" Mundy asked.
"I told you. It is by contract."
"A contract with who? Who's the mongrel who got you to shut your mouth and bottle up everything you feel inside you?!"
Lucien raised distraught eyes to his friend, through the bandages. He couldn't say that it was the French Ministry of Defense.
"If I told you, I would have to kill you."
"Not if I find them first and deal with them." Mundy answered. "Tell me who they are and where to find them. Are they in Oz?"
"M, would you really go out there and kill them if I told you who they were?"
"I'd talk to them first but if they leave me no choice, yeah. I mean what could possibly be worse than what I'm goin' through now? I'm walking to my death. Might as well help a friend if I can, eh?"
Lucien's smile faded.
"You have no idea what you are saying."
"Yeah I do." Mundy put his arm around Lucien's shoulders. "Whoever they are, we can do something about it. There's always a solution, ok?"
"Not in my case I am afraid."
"How long has this… uh… 'contract' been going on for now?"
"Almost three decades."
Mundy's jaw dropped.
"What…? Oh Gosh… I'm sorry for you b-but I'll help, ok? Just tell me who and where, I won't tell you anything and you won't know."
Their eyes were locked on each other’s. And Lucien felt it. Mundy's arm was on his shoulders and Perle was curled in a ball of fur on his shoulder. That man was absolutely mad. He was ready to go and kill just on Lucien's word, even though he had lied to him continuously.
"How do you know that what I am telling you now is not a lie?" He asked the Aussie.
"I don't. I just continue to trust you."
Lucien might have melted in tears if decades of being a professional spy hadn't made him a machine.
"Even after all the lies? And those that I refuse to break yet?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"I've seen you with Pearl. You can be genuine about yourself. I don't know what holds you back to do it, but you can be honest. I've seen Lulu too. He's… He's really something and it's a shame you feel you can't be more like him because of some stupid paper." Mundy answered. "Look, you don't have to help me do it. Just tell me who and where."
"I… I can't."
Lucien hid his face in his hands and lowered his head.
"I am sorry you will never know me really. You will never know my name, never know the respect I have for you, M." He spoke in his hands. "You will never know what I am, my profession, and you will never understand anything about it all. That is why I lie. I have no choice."
"Hey…" Mundy's hand slid on Lucien's back and he stroked it slowly. "It's alright. I don't get it but I respect it. Just please, keep the lies to a minimum, ok?"
Lucien's head jerked back up and he looked at Mundy with glistening eyes.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that you're right. Your lies and me blindly trusting you led us to see Duchemin from up close. So even though it's not ideal, it works for what we want to do." Mundy answered. "But uh… Why did you sign that contract in the first place? Can you tell me?"
"Because… Back then was a different era with different problems and they needed someone like me." Lucien answered. "Me on the other hand, I had fled home and had nothing to lose, or so I thought."
"Was it also like this with your… your fiancée?"
"Oui. I am afraid so. I was lying to her but like you, she knew I was lying and yet decided to support me. I was younger and not half as broken as I am now so I thought it could work. But part of me always said it: I cannot settle down, I can't think of doing all these things that normal people do."
"Because of your contract?"
Lucien nodded.
"Oui, because of that cursed thing."
"Hm." Mundy tapped Lucien's back gently. "I don't care about it. We all have our burdens and our mistakes to drag with us I guess. I'll help you and we'll get Duchemin."
"M?"
"Hm?"
Their eyes connected and even with the bandages, Mundy could see Lucien's eyes shining differently.
"For what it is worth, I will try to not lie to you about anything else than my name and what I am, my identity."
"Are there other lies you want to set straight with me?"
"Hm, let me see…. Perle is a cat, I live here in this hotel, I am Lulu… Non, I don't think so. But if I think of anything that I can share with you, I will."
Mundy smiled.
"Thanks, mate."
"Non, thank you…"
Lucien looked away to dry his wet eyes.
"... You are quite unique, M."
"Yeah well, you're one hell of a weird bloke too, eh?"
"Meow!"
"C'mon, admit it, kitty. Your dad's weird."
Perle brushed herself on Mundy's neck and cheek.
"Here, go and tell him he has a friend, now."
"Meow?"
"No, not you, you're his baby apparently, I'm the friend. Now go tell him, chop, chop"
Perle turned and went to Lucien's lap. He carried her to his face and didn't deafen the sound of the kisses he gave her.
Mundy laid his arm on the sofa's back and Lucien played with the kitten as he leaned down more until he let his neck rest on the sofa's back too. Mundy froze as Lucien was in fact using his forearm as a pillow.
"Mon bébé, s'il te plaît, va lui dire à quel point je… Tu trouveras les mots mieux que moi."
[My baby, please, go and tell him how much I… You will find the words better than me.]
Lucien released the kitten who went back to Mundy. She climbed on his polo shirt and reached his shoulder. She walked carefully on the arm he had laid across the sofa's back and curled in a ball of warm fluff down on it. Lucien stayed there and raised his head and his eyes to Mundy who was past crimson.
"Thank you, M." Lucien gently said, almost like a whisper.
The Aussie was paralysed way too firmly to say anything back. Perle was on his arm and Lucien rested his head on his forearm, staring at him with his gentle, almost poetic light blue eyes. Mundy lowered his head and looked away to bite his cheek.
And he remembered Emma, that waitress. He had spent a night with her and didn't feel a millionth of the chaos that he was now experiencing in his insides. And L had just laid on his forearm...

Chapter Five: Good Morning
Virgil’s POV
I woke up to the sound of my alarm once again. Groaning, I rolled over to shut it off, but didn’t make an effort to get out of bed just yet. Yesterday was my first day at school, and everything felt so surreal. As if I didn’t have three gay panics over three very handsome boys yesterday. Trudging my way towards the bathroom, I went about his morning routine. I heard my mom call me downstairs, and I braced myself for what she had to say.
Breakfast today was eggs and toast, and the table was already set up for the three of us. My parents were already seated at the table. They didn’t say anything to me, so I slowly took my seat in front of them. My mom was humming while my dad was sipping his coffee, so none of us spoke to each other. I was trying to eat as fast as I can to avoid whatever they had to say. Unfortunately, fate was not on my side.
“So Virge!” my mom suddenly piped up. Her eyes were bright, but they didn’t fill me with warmth. “I’m sorry we didn’t see you at all yesterday. Your father and I were being situated at our new jobs, so our coworkers took us out for a drink.” My father nodded in agreement.
“But now that we’re all together for a bit,” he said, putting down his mug, “tell us how was your first day of school?” Oh god, please don’t.
“It was good.” I replied monotonously. I wanted this conversation to end. I knew that they didn’t care if my first day was good or not.
“Make any new friends, sport?” my dad asks again, eyes finally leaving the newspaper, asking a silent question. My mom nods in agreement.
I sucked in a breath. “Yeah, I made a couple new friends.” I replied quickly. ‘Please don’t ask, please don’t ask, please don't ask-’
“Boys or girls, sport?” his dad badgered. I nearly cursed right then and there.
“Boys, dad.” I answered, frustrated. I felt a little bit of glee when he saw his parents frown.
“No girls yet, honey?” my mom asked, disappointed. “No one that caught your eye yet?”
‘Oh there was someone, more like some people, who caught my eye yesterday. But you wouldn’t care for that now would you, mom.’ I thought bitterly. I didn’t grace them with an answer. Instead, I stood up and walked upstairs to my room to cool off and brush my teeth. My parents are so… I can’t even describe them. I took deep breaths, trying to calm myself down. There was no way I was going to school looking like I had a panic attack. Steeling my nerves and locking the door to my room behind me, I went downstairs to put bacon in the Tupperware to eat on the way to school. My parents weren’t in sight when I left the house.
Once at school, I waved good morning to Talyn and headed towards my locker, still chewing on bacon. I was lost in thought, I didn’t notice someone coming up behind me until I felt a pair of arms wrap around my shoulders. I jolted and whirled around to see the smiling face of Patton staring at me.
“Oops! Sorry to startle you like that, kiddo!” Patton apologized, his light brown eyes losing a bit of their brightness to them. I quickly shook my head.
“No, no. I’m sorry for being so jumpy.” I murmured, hoping he didn’t hear me. Patton narrowed his eyes disapprovingly.
“You shouldn’t apologize for being who you are, kiddo.” Patton said calmly. I felt a warm feeling bubbling in my stomach. “Next time, I’ll call out to you before hugging you, ok?” he said with a bright smile. I nodded in response and held out my Tupperware of bacon. He squealed and eagerly took  a couple pieces. “Thank you, kiddo!” he said.
“Did you need me for something, Patton?” I asked curiously. Oh god, what if I’m already in trouble. I know I didn’t do anything, but what if? Patton seemed to sense my thoughts and shook his head.
“I just wanted to see how you were doing! This is your second day of school, so I wanted to check in with you, see how you were doing, see if you made any new friends. That kinda stuff!” he exclaimed. I nodded.
“I did meet some new people yesterday. They seemed nice.” I recalled, thinking back on Dee and his friends. Patton nodded, urging me to go on. “The classes are ok, and I’m getting used to the way things work around here.” I answered truthfully.
“And you also met Roman, Logan, and me!” Patton cheered. I nearly dropped my Tupperware of bacon, and I lightly blushed. Hopefully Patton didn’t notice it.
“How did you-?” I began.
“They’re friends of mine too! I talked to them yesterday about you, and they mentioned meeting you in different classes. Speaking of,” Patton paused, “they should be here by now.”
I turned to put away my Tupperware of bacon and focused on getting the books I need for my morning classes. 'He was talking to them about me?!’ I thought. ‘Oh jeez.’ Moments later, I heard the sound of running footsteps and Patton’s cheerful good morning greeting.
“Sorry we’re a little late, Patton.” I heard Logan say. Roman echoed the greeting. The three of them began talking about random subjects. I paid no attention because they were at my locker, just hanging here.
I closed my locker, possibly startling them, and turned to greet them a good morning. Well, I was, until I noticed that Roman and Logan were holding hands. I paused, standing in place for a few moments, collecting my thoughts. I felt… hurt? Jealous? Confused? My thoughts were spiraling. ‘Of course you go and fall for two people who are unavailable.’ a tiny voice in my head sneered. ‘Good going!’
Roman noticed me staring at them and smiled brightly. “Good morning to you, gatito! How are you on this wonderful morning?” he asked dramatically. Logan noticed me too and his lips curled into a small smirk.
“Why hello there, short stuff. A pleasure to see your face this morning.” he greeted calmly. There was a pang in my heart when I blushed at their words.
‘Don’t forget they’re already together.’ the voice reminded slyly. I pushed it down. Instead, I gave them a weak smile in greeting and turned and walked away to Math class.

Patton’s POV
I watched as Virge scampered away from us. He looked a little hurt. I turned to my partners, and they gave me a questioning glance.
“Were we too forward?” Roman asked hesitantly. It was his idea to greet Virgil in the morning. I quickly shook my head
“Maybe he’s not comfortable with a lot of people in his personal space? He did seem startled when I hugged him this morning.” I assured him. Roman didn’t look convinced, but Logan looked thoughtful.
“Perhaps,” he began, gesturing to where he and Roman were still holding hands, “he noticed this?” He looked at his partners. “We were on the right path with our plan to get him comfortable around us and eventually tell him about our relationship. But it seems that Virgil is a little too observant.” he explained, finally letting go of Roman’s hand.
“He got the wrong idea.” Roman said in shock. “We need to explain this to him!”
“Now let’s not get too hasty, kiddo.” I said, “I agree that we need to explain, but we need to do it in such a way that it won’t scare him off.”
The bell rang, signaling that class is about to start. “I’ll talk to him in Science class.” Logan said,  and the three of us went our separate ways.

Virgil’s POV
After handing in my worksheet to the teacher, I sat down with a heavy sigh. Dee looked over at me curiously. “Everything alright there, shortstack?” he asked. I gave him a weary nod and he frowned. “You can tell me and lunch, ok?” he said, and turned to the lesson. It was difficult to concentrate, but I tried my best. Thankfully, the teacher didn’t notice me not paying attention, so the lesson went on just like that. But it was the next class I was worried about.
Walking over to my seat, I saw Logan looking over his notes muttering under his breath. Oh god, why does he have to be my seatmate? Taking my seat, I took out everything I needed. I felt a small tap on my arm. I looked over and saw Logan looking at me curiously. I gave him a shaky smile in greeting, still thinking about what happened this morning. Logan opened his mouth to say something, but Mr. Williams began the lesson.
When class was over, there was ten minutes left before the next one. I put my books away and felt Logan tap me again. I looked at him curiously. His blue eyes were full of something I couldn’t process. Knowledge? Understanding? I don’t know.
“Virgil,” he began softly, “I wanted to apologize.” He gently took my hand in his, the same way he was holding Roman’s hand, giving me room to pull away from his grasp if I wanted. I didn’t. “It seemed that we overwhelmed you this morning. You looked panicked, so on behalf of Patton, Roman, and I, I wanted to apologize and make sure you’re ok.”
Stunned, I quickly gave my response. “No! Don’t apologize for that! I shouldn’t have made a scene like that.” I said hastily. Logan pursed his lips, and I flinched. ‘Great, now he’s gonna be suspicious.’ the tiny voice commented.
“Yes, well, we were supposed to meet you earlier, but Roman was a bit late this morning, so Patton went to meet you first while I waited for him.” Logan explained, rolling his eyes. I nearly laughed.
“Oh? Did Roman drag you over to my locker then?” I asked. ‘Is that why you were holding hands this morning?’ I thought desperately. I let out a sigh of relief when Logan nodded.
“He’s always a bit dramatic early in the morning.” Logan commented dryly. I covered my mouth with my sleeve as I tried to hold in a laugh.
‘So this was just a giant misunderstanding then.’ I thought to myself, ignoring the tiny voice in my head. We both sat there in a comfortable silence until the bell rang. Logan stood up first.
“I’ll see you later short stuff.” he called, let go of my hand, and walked out of the classroom.
***
Dee’s POV
I watched Virgil walk into the lunchroom, and I waved him over to our table. Remy and Remus were already there waiting for him. “You feelin’ better shortstuff?” I asked. He didn’t look the best when we were in class today. He looked more exhausted than usual, despite the eyeshadow he was wearing. Now, he seems a bit happier. Virgil nodded.
“Yeah, thanks for asking Dee.” he said, pulling out his lunch. It was a simple sandwich and a juicebox. Same as yesterday. It seemed like a normal lunch, but it was too small for my liking. I watched as Virgil bit into it, taking tiny bites. “There was just a slight misunderstanding this morning, nothing too big.” he continued. I nodded.
“I see.” I said. Remus looked over at me curiously. He began poking me with his fork again. I ignored him.
Remy peered over at him from over his sunglasses. “You’re a scrawny thing, Vee.” he said. “Is that all you have for lunch? You gotta eat more, babe.”
“Yeah shortie!” Remus piped up, proceeding to poke Virgil now. “You can share with me if you want!” Virgil laughed softly.
“Guys! It’s fine. Don’t worry about me!” he replied cheerfully. A little too cheerfully.
Remy frowned, but changed the subject quickly. “I hear there’s a new store opening at the mall this week.” he said nonchalantly. “Wanna go check it out?”
I nodded, eager to change the subject. I’ll think about it more later. “Sounds good.” I replied. Remus nodded, already texting away to inform his parents. I looked over at your smallest member. “You coming with, shortstack?” He choked on his food and looked up at me in surprise.
“You want me to come with you guys?” he asked, eyes wide.
Remy rolled his eyes. “Of course we do babe.” He held his hand out. “Gimme your phone babe.”
Virgil did so, and Remy put his phone number in before giving it to Remus, and then Remus gave it to me. I gave it back to Virgil.
“Perfect, now we can all stay in touch.” I said cheerfully. The four of us finished our lunch and dispersed when the bell rang. Virgil walked off to his Study Hall, while Remus and I walked to our next class. The chaotic teen was gleefully cackling all the way there.
“Roman’s gonna be so jealous.” he replied when I asked, and I burst into laughter.

Note: My dear readers, thank you so much for your support of this series. This whole process has been an absolute joy, and much of that is because of you. I’m grateful for every reblog, comment, and like you’ve left these last few weeks. Each one has made my days brighter. : )
Although my work schedule means I’ll probably be pretty scarce on Tumblr for the rest of June, I would love to return to this AU later in the summer. If there are other stories you’d like to see within this universe, please let me know!

Kellen stifled a yawn with the back of her hand, pouring herself a second cup of coffee with the other. From the window above the sink, she could see her son still running circles along the shoreline. As the object of his chase, Cassian ran ahead in stunted steps -- close enough to be caught, but not close enough to remove the challenge entirely.
She joined them outside, giggling to herself as their laughter carried over on the salty breeze. Once she’d laid her towel across the sand, she sat for a moment, watching. Morning coffee may no longer be a private affair, but the change suited her well. Taking a sip from the too-full mug, she couldn’t help smiling as Owen caught and clung onto one of his father’s legs. Those two were thick as thieves.
Cassian had volunteered to keep him occupied during the morning so that she could spend the time adding to the tan she’d started the day before. It was a generous offer, though she knew it had been prompted by at least one ulterior motive: the more worn out Owen was, the longer he’d nap. A longer nap meant more time for the two of them to pursue more...intimate activities.
They’d been on Nantucket for less than twenty-four hours, but already she felt more relaxed than she had in years. Between the sun and the sound of the surf, the time away from work and city life, and the companionship of her little family, she truly lacked for nothing.
Nothing, it seemed, but seashells.
Hurried footsteps startled her out of her sunbathing daze some hour later. She jolted back to reality to find her son before her, holding out a handful of sandy shells. She received them graciously, making room for him to sit next to her on the towel while he babbled on about the things he’d seen and done along the shore.
Cassian caught up to them, an apology in his eyes for the interruption. She smiled in reassurance and dusted off another corner of the towel so that he could join.
“It’s a great day for swimming,” he remarked with his gaze on the horizon.
“It would be even better for sailing,” she challenged, brushing a film of dried sand from Owen’s cheek. “We’ll have to look into boat rentals once he’s a little older. Maybe in a couple of summers?”
Cassian chuckled beside her. “Already planning our next trip?”
“I thought we could make it a tradition. Maybe even buy a house of our own out here someday.”
He fell quiet, though his fingers strayed over to interlace her own. The moment was cut short by Owen’s decision that it was time for a swim, but it was enough for Kellen to take his meaning.
It still felt a bit foreign to talk so freely about the future, even moreso to talk in terms of our and we. Over the past weeks and months, much of the ambiguity about their future had been stripped away. She’d been tiptoeing around the most pressing issue for a while, but she hadn’t taken the plunge quite yet. Soon, she promised herself, cheeks burning as Cassian turned toward her and flashed a winning smile.
She was sure that the smile had been prompted by something their son had done, but she only had eyes for him. Up to his knees in seawater, carrying Owen in his arms, she couldn’t imagine any other path for her future. Maybe soon was even closer than she’d realized.
Kellen fell back to the towel, shielding her eyes from the sun as she considered her options. What was the purpose of prolonging the inevitable? She knew they were going to be together, and marriage was something Cassian clearly wanted. With a dull thrum of regret, she thought of the time their family had already spent fractured apart. She never wanted that kind of separation again. If a wedding meant there would be even more binding them together, how could she say no?
In the distance, she heard the crashing waves and the excited chatter of the two people who meant the most in her life. As she drifted into a light doze, the answer to her question became abundantly clear.
_____
The sand was still warm when she and Cassian ventured back out several hours later. Spreading their blanket wide on the empty beach, she kicked off her shoes and sank onto the pliable ground.
“Just look at that water,” he admired, passing her one of the wine glasses he carried so that he could find a seat next to her. “I know we’ve been out here all day, but the view never gets old.”
Nantucket sunsets were a sight to be remembered, and tonight was no exception. After a full afternoon of swimming and shopping in the local markets, there was nothing she wanted more than the chance to relax with with him.
“It’s good to be back.” Kellen sipped her wine, enjoying the way the light caught the tips of the waves as they rolled in. She could just make out Owen’s static breathing coming through the speaker of the baby monitor as it blended with the ambient noises of the sea.
Resting her cheek on Cassian’s shoulder, she allowed her eyes to close in utter contentment. “This trip is a vast improvement on the last time,” she murmured dreamily.
He shifted slightly beneath her to find her hand. “That’s an understatement.”
Eyes springing open, she set the glass aside and raised her head to glimpse his face. “You mean this is better than the summer we spent being young and stupid and pretending we weren’t head over heels for each other?”
His brow lifted with amusement. “I never want to go back to that stage. I like where we are far too much.”
And what about where we’re going? She asked the question of herself, wondering if now was the time to bring up the subject she’d been considering earlier in the day.
“Where we are is perfect,” he claimed, giving her fingers a meaningful squeeze. Kellen knew his desires enough to understand that there was some amount of compromise in the statement -- no doubt made for her benefit. But she didn’t want that kind of compromise any longer.
“It’s almost perfect,” she corrected, outlining his lower lip with a single finger. “You know what would make it absolutely perfect?”
His initial concern turned to thinly-veiled curiosity. “What’s that?”
“If you went and got that ring that you’ve been carrying around for forever. I know it’s in your suitcase.”
Bewildered, he stretched out a hand to mirror her touch. She held his eyes as he traced from her cheek to her jaw, down to the fine point of her chin. “Really?” the word was rough, as though it had caught in his throat.
Grateful as she was for his determination not to push her, now that her mind was settled, she wanted action. “Yes, really.”
His entire face erupted into a smile, and he pulled her lips to his for a hasty kiss. “I’ll be right back.”
“Don’t wake Owen!” she reminded with a laugh.
“I won’t,” he promised before disappearing around the side of the cottage. He returned scarcely a minute later, sprinting once he made it to the sand. As he dropped to the blanket before her, the fading light from behind bathed him in a circle of red and gold.
Her breath caught, and she could feel the surging pulse at her throat.
“You’re sure this is what you want?” He checked, noticing her demeanor. At her nod, he rose to one knee and stretched out both hands in invitation.
Kellen took them gladly, stroking his fingers in reassurance. “You’ve practically proposed already, Cassian. I’ve just taken my time saying yes.”
“But we should go out for a fancy dinner, have a moonlit stroll or something… I want it to be the most romantic night you’ve ever had.”
“Hmm. I’m no expert, but something tells me tonight is going to be pretty hard to beat,” she challenged, sitting up on her knees until her eyes were level with his.
“Cassian, I went a summer hiding my true feelings and pushing you away because I thought it would protect me. I spent the next three years wanting to forget you, and I failed miserably. These last nine months, I’ve let you in, and they’ve been the best months of my life. I want a future of holding you close and loving you with everything that I have. Wearing this,” she continued, letting go of his hands to find the small box beside him on the blanket, “is part of how I want to show you that love.”
“And you say you’re not good with words,” he chuckled, almost breathless under the significance of her statement. Cradling her face with both hands, he bent forward and grazed her forehead with his own. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” she echoed as he pulled away. “But you have no idea how long it took me to think all of that through. Give me numbers and logic any day… as long as I’ve got you there too.”
“I will be. But can we make this official, first?” He reached for the box, and she surrendered it willingly, every bit as eager as he was to view its contents.
“Kellen, you’re the love of my life. You’re strong and hard working, you’re stunning, you’re funny and fiery and smart -- and I can’t imagine a better mother for our son. Beyond all of those things, you’re the perfect partner for me. Like you said, the last several months have been...incredible,” shaking his head for emphasis, he took a moment before moving on. “I want what we have now to last for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?”
“Weren’t you listening before?” she questioned, cheeks aching from the width of her smile. “You know I will.”
“I know,” he assured with a laugh. “But I’ll take any chance I get to remind you how lucky I am that you’re mine. Besides, I’ve gotta let that romantic side out somehow.” Flipping back the lid, he carefully lifted the ring and slipped it onto the appropriate finger.
Kellen nudged the slim stripe of gold with her thumb, doing nothing to disguise her enthusiasm as she inspected the gem. Under the watercolor sky, flecks of every color bounced off each facet of the diamond’s surface. “You did such a good job, Cassian. This is perfect.”
“Just wait ‘til you see it together with the wedding band,” the words were almost shy, as if he couldn’t believe that the conversation was taking place. “And I don’t deserve all of the credit. I took Grainne into confidence: she’s always had an eye for fashion.”
“I think you’re selling yourself short,” she critiqued, remembering all of the times he’d chosen things for her in the past. “But remind me to thank your sister anyway the next time we see her. Grainne’s the only one who knows?”
“She is. I know it hasn’t been a secret for you, but I didn’t want anyone else to find out I’d bought it. You didn’t need that kind of pressure.” Rolling onto his side, he eased himself into the seat next to her.
Taking advantage of his new position, Kellen propped herself up to climb on his lap. The sand shifted beneath her weight, but he extended an arm to hold her steady. Even after she’d made herself comfortable, his hand still rested on her hip. “This is nice,” she remarked, running a finger across the flat of his thumbnail.
“Here.” He stretched away from her, removing the hand for just a moment before it returned, clutching stem of her glass.
Kellen accepted the drink and relaxed against his chest. “Thanks for being so patient with me. It’s just... marriage is a big step. I needed to be sure.”
“I needed you to be sure,” he agreed, absently fiddling with the new addition to her finger. “And this would still be in its box if I thought there was any chance you weren’t.”
“I’m absolutely certain.” She tilted her head back, straining for a view of his face. “You sure you’re ready to be stuck with me for the rest of your life?”
His features lit with a boyish grin. “It’s all I’ve wanted for ages. Though I do have one complaint about the timing: I don’t think I’m going to be able to fall asleep tonight.”
Chuckling under her breath, Kellen tilted her hips into the heat between his thighs. “Do you really think I’d let that happen? I have plans to make sure you’re fully worn out first,” she promised suggestively, smirking as she heard the hitch in his breathing. “But for now, I want to sit with you for awhile and watch the stars come out.”
“That’s perfect.” Spoken at her ear, it came as little surprise when the words ended with a kiss to the sensitive skin behind it.
Shivering into the sensation, her next words were unusually quiet. “And since you’ve been thinking about it for longer than I have, maybe you can start telling me about your perfect wedding.”
He paused for a drink of wine, but held her a little tighter when he resumed. “Well, you’re there with a massive smile on your face--”
“Of course!” she broke in, too excited to regret the interruption.
“The biggest smile you’ve ever had,” he appended. “And Owen should be...”
Though some part of her followed the words, a sudden outpouring of delight made it difficult for her to focus on anything but the unbridled happiness that carried through her veins.
What she’d told him before had been true. She was absolutely certain about spending the rest of their lives together.
For so long, she’d been determined to control it all -- to calculate every aspect of her life and plan it to perfection. Yet now she knew, without a shadow of doubt, that nothing -- no scheme, no equation, no amount of thinking in advance -- could ever have led to something as perfect as the future that now lay before her.
