Deer's Xenofiction List - The Good, the Bad, and the Furry
Compilation of my xenofiction books I've read, my opinions on them, and ones that I've yet to get to. Will be updated as I go along, if I remember. Books I have not read have an asterisk (*) in front of them. Not a complete list, I will update as I gather more titles.
Adaptations will be listed along with the source material and not as a separate entry.
While I am accepting additions to the list, please make sure your suggestion isn't already listed.
Last Updated: 24-06-2024
-New additions to the books section
-Categories and sub-categories being considered: short films, animal transformation (human to animal).
-Content Warning: Mentions of sexual assault, animal abuse, animal death, and violence. Only a handful of entries have content warnings because they were given to me prior. Please look into the works beforehand to see if you feel comfortable engaging with them, this list is not a content warning guide.
Books
Warriors by Erin Hunter - A long-running series following the drama of four groups of feral cat groups in a forest.
Rating: sucks just read the first arc and nothing else. unless you have childhood nostalgia for this series you probably won't like anything that comes after.
Seekers by Erin Hunter - another animal series from the erin hunter team. It follows a group of bears searching for a safe place to live.
Rating: It's fine. I only read the first arc. While it has a much drearier tone than Warriors at times as it deals with growing environmental impact of global warming and human interference. If you like Erin Hunter's writing style, you might like this one.
*Survivors by Erin Hunter - Look we just gotta get these out of the way, these guys have a monopoly on kid's animal books. Survivors follows a dog named Lucky (yes. really) trying to survive in an area abandoned by humans.
Rating: I read the first book and nothing else. I'm sure it's...fine, suitable for a dog-obsessed young reader but as it is, no one's really rushed to recommend it to me. I'm sure it has fans somewhere, but I can't really speak for them.
*Bravelands by Erin Hunter - uuuhhh animals? in Africa? Surviving? I guess? Sorry my bias against Hunter is showing, but at some point you start to wonder what's going on here, you can feel them trying to recreate the success of Warriors.
Rating: idk what to tell you, never read it and probably never will. If you're a person who likes lion stories, you might enjoy this, maybe? Been told the hyena rep is appalling, another sad day for hyena lovers everywhere.
*Bamboo Kingdom by (you guessed it) Erin Hunter - It follows three pandas (apparently) each in different panda kingdoms.
Rating: I couldn't tell you shit about this one to be honest. You want more bears? Here's bears!
The Bees by Laline Paull - A novel following the life of Flora, a sanitation bee in her hive who rises through the ranks of her devout society.
Rating: Unfocused at times and a rushed ending, but a gripping story nonetheless. Would recommend!
Pod by Laline Paull - Follows the life of Eira, a spinner dolphin from an "exotic tribe" who is forcibly taken into another group of dolphin's to become a member of their leaders harem.
Rating: This book relies on the mythos of "dolphin rape" with numerous, non-graphic sexual assault scenes. While interesting concepts are introduced and, at times, the plot becomes compelling; it otherwise flounders its premise with messy execution and poorly thought out ideas. Also there's an American spy dolphin named Google, make of that what you will.
*The Wildlings and its sequel The Hundred Names of Darkness by Nilanjana Roy - A book about a small band of cats lives in the labyrinthine alleys and ruins of Nizamuddin, an old neighbourhood in Delhi.
Rating: Recommended multiple times to me by different people, no warnings given.
Varjak Paw (and sequels) by S. F. Said and illustrated by Dave Mckean - A short book about Varjak, a Mesopotamian Blue Cat, and his journey to learn an ancient art from his family’s past.
Rating: Varjak Paw is unique with striking imagery and interesting ideas. However, the writing in itself is far from anything special. The book it at its best when accompanied by Mckean’s striking visuals.
*The Underneath by Kathi Appelt - An abused dog hides under the porch of a home to escape from its owner. Based on a reply I've been given, do not ask me to expand anymore on the plot of this book, I have no goddamn clue.
Rating: Described as a formative book for reading xenofiction, it’s been recommended highly! Contains heavy topics such as animal abuse, be warned.
*Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies - A novel following a red deer named Rannoch and a prophecy that looms over him.
Rating: It seems to have a decent fanbase and it's been recommended to me a handful of times.
*Bambi, a Life in the Woods by Felix Salten - A coming-of-age novel following a roe deer named Bambi. Best known from the 1942 Disney film.
Rating: If you're a deerhead, check it out I guess!
*Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker - Often (favorably) compared to a textbook, Raptor Red follows a female Utahraptor. Written by a paleontologist, it's meant to be a realistic look at dinosaur's social habits and their interactions with their world.
Rating: Yet to read but sounds cool as fuck. This book contains a heavy emphasis on realism and world-building, with little dialogue. It may be slow for some readers!
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell - Horse girls, certain English classes, and so on, Black Beauty is fairly well-known. Though for those unaware, Black Beauty follows the titular Black Beauty's life in Victorian days.
Rating: It's a classic! Pulls at your heart strings! Just typing this out makes me want to reread it.
Watership Down by Richard Adams - Similar to Black Beauty, I can't imagine anyone reading this list doesn't know about the tale of a group of rabbit's trying to survive a harsh world.
Rating: It's well-written with a lively world, but its treatment of its female cast reveals a deep gendered bias in the writing.
*Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert. C. O'Brien - Mostly known from the (excellent) Don Bluth adaptation, the book follows Mrs. Frisby and he encounter with a group of highly intelligent rats.
Rating: Yet to read.
*Redwall by Brian Jacques - A 22 book series following a group of anthrophormic animals who live in Redwall Abbey and their call to action to defend themselves from "vermin".
Rating: Yet to read
Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky - A 31 book series following a group of owls and their attempts to thwart evil. The first arc follows Soren and his attempts to find the owls of Ga'Hoole and beat the 'Pure Ones' while the later books act as an epilogue and prequel.
Rating: First half read and loved! Highly recommend! Handling of Kludd is...meh.
Note: It has an animated film adaptation! While not entirely faithful, it still does a great job keeping to the themes of the books, trimming the fat, and telling a complete story. It also has two video games, one on DS and one on ah other consoles? Both are fun, I like the Wii version.
*(sorta?) Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland - Most people reading this will know this one! It takes place in a world of dragons with seven tribes. The first arc follows the exploits of prophecized dragonets and their attempts to end a war.
Rating: I've yet to finish it. The writing is skewed for a younger audience but is charming nonetheless.
Note: It has a graphic novel adaptation illustrated by Mike Holmes.
*Duncton Wood (First book of the Duncton Chronicles) by William Horwood - A novel the three groups of moles in Duncton Woods and the tyranny of a powerful mole named Mandrake.
Rating: Not yet read, heard good things! lots of mole sex apparently.
The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams - After escaping an animal research facility, Snitter and Rowf escape out into the wild where they must survive a hostile world.
Rating: ough. my heart. would recommend.
Note: Well-known for its animated adaptation, would recommend it as well.
*Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel - The first in the Silverwing book series, Silverwing follows a bat named Shade who loses his colony during a migration to the south.
Rating: Yet to read but I've heard good things!
Note: Currently has an animated television adaptation, go check it out!
*A Black Fox Running by Brian Carter - The story follows the tale of a dark-furred fox named Wulfgar and his human nemesis, Scoble the trapper, over the course of time.
Rating: Yet to read.
*The Books of the Named/Ratha’s Creature (First book of the Ratha’s Creature series) by Clare’s Bell - Ratha’s Creature is set in prehistoric times following the story of Ratha, a Dinaelurus nimravid(?) and her role as a female in her Clan.
Yet to read, often recommended in the Xenofiction scene.
*The Taken (Book one of the Foxcraft trilogy) by Inbali Inserles - Follows the story of Isla, a fox kit who loses her home and family and must survive in the world of “furless” while mastering Foxcraft.
Recommended by @girlashfur
*Hurry Home, Candy by Meindert DeJong and illustrations by Maurice Sendak - Described as "heavy", Hurry Home, Candy follows the life and struggles of a dog named Candy.
Recommended by @mosshugs
Felidae (the first book in a nine book series) by Akif Pirinçci - A crime novel following Francis the cat as he tries to uncover the truth behind a series of murders in his new neighborhood.
Rating: I haven't read the novel and nor do I want to, but I did watch the adaptation. It's a grisly one but apart from the violent murders and striking imagery in the film, you're not missing much by skipping it. I can't really recommend this one for a variety of reasons.
Important: I can't stop you from reading the book or watching the animated adaptation, I watched the animated adaptation, but please do not financially support the author in any way. Pirinçci is a far-right dipshit and does not deserve support.
The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann - With eight books under its belt, The Animals of Farthing Wood originally started as one book about a group of woodland animals trying to find a new home after losing their old one to human development. It was followed by six sequels and one prequel.
Rating: Haven't read the books but I love the animated adaptation of it! I recommend checking out both.
*Ragweed (First book of the Dimwood book series) by Avi - A book about the adventures of a mouse seeing the world.
Recommended by @meanling
*A Dog's Life: An Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin - Written by the same author of the Babysitter's Club series, A Dog's Life chronicles the life of a dog named Squirrel.
Recommended by @meanling
*Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker and illustrations by Junyi Wu - Scary Stories for Young Foxes is a book consisting of several stories all told by a mother to her kits.
Recommended anonymously
*The Sight (and its sequel The Fell) by David Clement-Davies - Set in the same universe as Fire Bringer, The Sight follows a pack of wolves cursed by a lone wolf, Morgra, whose powers foretell the destiny of one of the mother wolf's pups: Larka, a white wolf gifted with a mysterious power known as The Sight.
Not yet read.
*Last of the Curlews by Fred Bodsworth - A realistic depiction of the journey of the last of a critically endangered and soon to be extinct bird.
Not yet read.
Note: Has an animated adaptation!
*Wish Tree by Katherine Applegate - From the same author as The One and Only Ivan! While this story includes animals, it's main character is an old oak tree named Red! The perspective is really interesting. She is both the neighborhood wish tree, and a home for many animals. A family of Muslim refugees move into the neighborhood, with the kid, Samar, becoming attached to the tree.
Not yet read.
*Pax by Sara Pennypacker - A war approaches and Peter must release his pet fox when his father enlists. The story alternates between Peter as he starts a journey to find his pet, and Pax who is learning to survive in the wild.
Not yet read.

Not yet read.
*The Tygrine Cat by Inbali Iserles - Alone and lost, a young cat called Mati is struggling to be accepted by a colony of street cats in the bustling marketplace at Cressida Lock. What Mati doesn’t know is that he is the last of a vital, age-old breed and that a mysterious feline assassin named Mithos is close on his trail. With his enemy nearing, can Mati learn to harness his ancient powers — before a deadly feline force destroys both him and his newfound friends and takes the spirit of every cat on earth?
Not yet read.
Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis - The ancient Greek Gods make a bet and endow fifteen dogs from a shelter with human-level intelligence.
Rating: I can't say I loved this book but nonetheless I appreciated it's prose. If you can get past outdated pack dynamics and some...questionable writing around its female characters, there's a lot to appreciate. Mind you, this is a book for adults and does not shy away from sexual material.
Comics (Webcomics included)
Beasts of Burden written by Evan Dorkin and illustrated by Benjamin Dewey and Jill Thompson - The comics follow along the adventures of the ‘Beasts of Burden’ a group of animals who investigate paranormal happenings in their neighborhood.
Rating: With gorgeous art and an interesting world, I recommend! Just be warned, it is bloody and the sory doesn't hold your hand.
Note: Beasts of Burden currently has 21 comics published in Dark Horse Comics.
What Lurks Beneath by ArualMeow - A feral colony must grapple with a food shortage while simultaneously tussling with the divide between two groups of cats.
Rating - A highly compelling read. Each character plays a role in the unravelling drama of three siblings and you will walk away loving someone.
Note: Ongoing!
I Hope So by Detective Calico - A rewrite of My Pride turned into an original story, I Hope So follows the story of three lionesses navigating both the complicated politics of the lion prides but also the harsh environment they must survive in.
Rating: Slow to update but absolutely worth it! I Hope So is a charming and interesting read. It’s yet to finish but it’s far enough that you'll be able to invest yourself in the world and characters with no trouble!
Note: Ongoing!
Tofauti Sawa by TheCynicalHound - A revenge story that follows a spotted hyena named Sahara.
Rating: Tofauti Sawa is not here to endear you to its protagonists or hold your hand. It can be a tough read but a worthwhile one nonetheless. I need to catch up but I recommend it!
Note: Ongoing!
*Golden Shrike by Doeprince - A story about twin deer and their friends and their search to retrieve three fallen stars for a bored God.
Rating: Yet to read but I've heard good things!
Note: Ongoing!
*Doe of Deadwood by Songdog - It follows a deer who has a pact with a demon that takes the form of a tree. It has some heavy themes and light gore.
Recommended by @beeloaf
Note: Complete!
Jet and Harley by Doeprince - Described as a beautiful piece on grief and moving on, Jet and Harley stars a kitty cast and gorgeous artwork.
Rating: Recommended anonymously. It's still starting but it has some strong set up and charming writing going for it, I recommend keeping an eye on it!
Note: Ongoing!
Preeny Has to Repeat 6th Grade by momodriller - A love letter to adoptables and the creativity of young artists, this charming comic utilizes designs bought from adoptables on DeviantArt! It follows the story of Preeny, a young cat with a magic brush tail and what happens when her whole world turns upside down.
Rating: Beyond adorable, charming and sweet. There's a lot of love put into this webcomic and it shows! Highly recommend.
Note: Ongoing!
Africa by Arven92 - The story of a female leopard named Africa and her quest to protect her family and loved ones while her territory comes under threat.
Rating: Gorgeously drawn and with a story that twists, Africa pulls no punches in showing you the wickedness of its antagonists but also the enduring bond of a family.
Note: Ongoing!
*Oren's Forge by Teagan Gavet - A webcomic that explores the dynamics of predator and prey and what happens when those divisions fall in the story of a pair of pine martens and their journey for sanctuary.
Rating: Not yet read
Note: Ongoing!
*Pride of Baghdad written by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon - A graphic novel falling the fictionalized account of the real life escape of four lions from the Baghdad Zoo after an American bombing in 2003.
Rating: Not yet read.
Content warning for graphic violence, gore, animal death, and a brief one panel depiction of sexual assault.
*I Didn't Know by Songdog - A comic about a cat exiled from her Church.
Rating: Not yet read.
Note: Ongoing
*Fox Fires by Pipilia - This ongoing Webtoon follows a Tanuki named Raate as she goes on a journey to find the missing "Fox Fires", a gate between the land of the dead and living. She encounters many friends such as birds who are messangers for elves, magic cats, and normal mean wolves.
Not yet read.
Note: Ongoing
Manga & Anime
*Silver Fang Gin and Ginga Densetsu Weed written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Takahashi - The original and the sequel respectively, the manga series follow Akita dogs, Gin and Weed. While Silver Fang focuses on Gin's search to fight the monstrous "Red Helmet", Weed follows the titular Weed and his search for his father.
Rating: I've not read this but upon getting recommended it, multiple people warned me about the misogyny in the series. Ye be warned. Additionally, the manga is (apparently) very gory!
Note: Both have anime adaptations. Weed's opening is a fucking banger go watch it at the very least.
Beastars (and Beast Complex by extension) written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki - In a world of anthromorphic animals, Beastars follows Legosi, a young wolf navigating his complicated feelings towards other species and learning more about his world.
Rating: Beastars is action-packed, fun, emotional, and dramatic! The first half is a compelling story of identity and how we interact with one another and the complex forces of society that drive our feelings, all wrapped up in a wonderous animal metaphor. As a coming-of-age story, it carries themes of desire, sexual desire, yearning, shame, and more. The second half is eeeeehhh not as strong, but I still recommend it nonetheless!
Note: Beastars currently has an anime adaptation by Studio Orange! It looks fantastic and has some really nice quality of life changes. Highly recommend.
Chi's Sweet Home written and illustrated by Konami Kanata - An adorable slice-of-life story following a cute kitten named Chi adapting to her new home.
Rating: It's just plain cute! If you're looking for something adorable to help you relax, I recommend this one. It's for a younger age demographic so don't go in expecting deep storylines or anything.
Note: Chi's Sweet Home has two adaptations: one with traditional 2D Japanese animation and two seasons and a 2016 3DCGI adaptation. I'd recommend the original adaptation but that's pure preference.
Nyankees written and illustrated by Atsushi Okada - A comedy manga that depicts street cats as brawling "yankees", drawing them as both cat and human to depict their brawls over food, territory, and ladies!
Rating: It's funny, I can't deny the humor in this one makes me chuckle. It's a little racy but otherwise, a fun, light-hearted read.
*A Cat's Tale written by Sae-Him Kwon and Hyeon-Jung Kim and illustrated by Kwon-Sam - A thrilling tale of murder and deception from the animals living on the Sae-Min's farm from the point of view of an elderly cat.
Rating: Yet to read, discovered on Anime-Planet's search system.
Monotone Blue written and illustrated by Nagabe - A story set in high school, it's a BL manga that follows Hachi the cat and Aoi the lizard.
Rating: Yet to read, but I adore the author's other works so I have high expectations!
*Neko to Ryuu written by Amara and illustrated by Sasaki Izumi- A cat raises a baby dragon as her own.
Rating: Yet to read but come on, that sounds adorable.
A Story of Seven Lives written and illustrated by Shirawaka Gin - A Story of Seven Lives follows Nanao, a former housecat turned street cat after a terrible tragedy.
Rating: It's a tearjerker and absolutely adorable. The artwork is lovely and all the cats' designs look fantastic. if you're interested in a simple drama about the relationship between cats and people, i would highly recommend it.
Note: There are human protagonists! If you want pure animal protagonists, maybe skip this one.
*The Walking Cat: A Cat's-Eye-View of the Zombie Apocalypse by Tomo Kitaoka - Zombies roam the earth and civilization as we know it is dead. When Jin—a young man trying to survive the chaos—rescues a cat from certain death, the unlikely duo sets off on a quest to find a mysterious island where Jin’s wife may be alive. Witness the zombie apocalypse through the eyes of a fearless feline whose curiosity may kill him yet.
Rating: Not yet read.
PLEASE READ: Due to its setting, this series has been given a handful of content warnings, please heed this warning before you read. Content warning for gore, death, sexual abuse, physical abuse.
Film
i'm not gonna put every disney or dreamworks film on here i'm sure a majority of us know that disney makes a lot of already popular animal films. if possible, i'd like to spotlight some films that weren't made by big studios and/or don't get a lot of attention. Further note, some of these are adaptations of children's books. I'm cheating a little here mainly because the adaptations are more well-known and probably more appealing for readers of this list than the original books. Uh, sorry.
The Brave Little Toaster directed by Jerry Rees - The film follows the adventures of sentient kitchen appliances and the search for their owner.
Rating: Aimed for a younger audience, it's an adorable viewing for all ages.
Isle of Dogs directed by Wes Anderson - In the year 2038, canine flu breaks out in a futuristic Japan and all dogs are sent to 'trash island' where they fight to survive. One day, a young Japanese boy crashes down on trash island to find his dog.
Rating: The stop-motion animation is gorgeous, the writing is fun and charming, and the visuals are amazing, however the film has rightfully garnered criticism for its stereotypical depiction of Japanese society and 'white savior' narrative around one of its human characters.
Chirin no Suzu (English Title: Ringing Bell/Chirin's Bell) directed by Masami Hata - On a farm, Chirin witnesses the death of his mother to a wolf. Distraught and filled with rage, Chirin vows to get revenge and trains to do so.
Rating: A fantastic and visually striking film, the film's cute aesthetics hide a sombre and darker story. Would recommend!
*Vuk (English Title: The Little Fox) directed by Atilla Dargay - A Hungarian animated film that follows the life of a fox and how he must use his wits to survive.
Rating: Not yet watched.
Arashi no Yoru Ni (English Title: One Stormy Night) directed by Gisaburō Sugii - On one stormy night, a sheep and a wolf take refuge from a storm in the same abandoned home and befriend each other...unaware of what species the other is until later. They strike an unusual friendship that's tested when their respective groups begin to clash.
Rating: Cute, sweet, and well-animated, One Stormy Night is well known for the romantic undertones of its two leads. I think it's adorable and highly recommend.
Note: It received another adaptation of the same source material, a 3D animated show where they made the sheep a girl. Do with that information what you will.
Leafy, A Hen into the Wild directed by Oh Sung-yoon - A farm chicken dreams of one day living a life in the wild and raising her own clutch of eggs and, after faking her death to escape, finally gets the opportunity to do so.
Rating: A gorgeous animated film with moments that will tug at your heart strings. It's got some kiddy jokes with poop and fart jokes but they're not too distracting. Would recommend!
Note: Please find a version with the ORIGINAL ending, not the censored one. It is more thematically fitting and one heck of a gut-punch.
Underdog/A Dog's Courage directed by Lee Chun-baek and Oh Sung-yoon - After being abandoned by his owners, a dog joins up with a pack of other dogs in search of 'paradise'.
Rating: Despite some poor pacing and wonky tonal problems, I think this movie is still worth checking out! The character designs are cute and it's decent entertainment if you've got some time.
Note: There's a post that says this movie is about dogs escaping to North Korea, it's not true. They escape from North Korea to South Korea.
Padak directed by Dae-Hee Lee - A dark and sometimes brutal film about a wild fish that ends up in a restaurant fish tank that overlooks the ocean. The film stays there and the audience is given a tense, nerve-wracking narrative of life and death.
Rating: A fantastic, emotional movie that uses its limited setting to its full advantage. It's brutal and unforgiving but one hundred percent worth the watch.
Khumba directed by Anthony Silverston - A film that follows a zebra with only half his stripes and his journey to gain the rest of them in hopes of being accepted by his herd.
Rating: It's fine, a little wonky but it has a lot of heart.
Earnest and Celestine directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner - A gorgeous 2D French animated film based on a series of children's films about a bear who takes in an orphan mouse in an anthropomorphic society that does not approve.
Rating: you're going to get cavities at how sweet this film is. Charming, funny, and visually stunning, you would be remiss if you didn't watch this wonderful film at least once.
The Land Before Time directed by Don Bluth - After tragedy strikes, young Apatosaurus must embark on a journey to find the Great Valley.
Rating: It's a classic! A bit cutesy and meanders at times, but still worth a watch.
Note: Pretty well known for the host of direct-to-DVD sequel movies it produced, a television series, and a video game.
Television (Online Productions Included)
My Pride directed by Maddi Patton - My Pride is an independent internet production that follows the tale of a disabled lion named Nothing trying to exist in her cruel society.
Rating: My Pride is clearly a work of passion, one can’t deny the creator clearly had a vision of what she wanted from this show. However, the execution is flawed and the handling of disability has been (rightfully) criticized. While the animators and voice actors have clearly put a lot of love and effort into the project, the writing falls short of what it could be.
Note: The series ends on a cliffhanger and has been discontinued. You have been warned.
My Little Pony (Generations 1-5) developed by Hasbro - If you like ponies, here you go! While G1 did have a human character, G3 to G5 are purely horsies. Each generation has a different story and main cast to follow.
Rating: Very obviously for a younger age demographic, the generations do have their own charm! G4 is popular for a reason with a sleek style, witty writing, and a lovely cast of characters.
Azurehowl and Azurehowl Reborn created by azurehowlshilach - Bet this one brings back nostalgia lol Azurehowl is set in a world where wolves have the magic of dragons! It centers around Ruuza who may be more special than she realizes.
Rating: i gotta rewatch this one to make my thoughts clear but i remember finding it charming. Azurehowl Reborn appears to be the remake/reboot of the original series.
Note: Ongoing!
Twelve by Petpyves - An original series about May and Imp, a duo who's jobs are to jump from body to body and guide them to a better end, results vary. It's a work of love and has some really strong concepts and writing, as well as doing its best to handle more mature subejcts with respect.
Rating: It's rough around the edges but nonetheless a great show to binge! I recommend it, though it's been a while since I watched it.
Note: Complete!
No Evil by Betsy Lee - In the land of myths and fables incarnate a group of spirits live their casual lives alongside humans, until a cataclysmic force thought to be dealt with shows once again in the world. A prequel series to the webcomic Brother Swan.
Rating: Not yet watched.
Note: Complete!
Burrow's End by Dimension 20 - A Dungeons & Dragons campaign following a group of stoats.
Rating: Not yet watched.
Note: Complete!
Video Games
Okami developed by Clover Studios - You play as the wolf Amaterasu on her journey to save the world from forces of darkness.
Rating: A classic for a reason. Fun to play, great story, lovely characters. Would recommend!
Stray developed by Bluetwelve Studios - In a walled city populated by robots, you play as a cat.
Rating: ending made me bawl. Gameplay is a bit clunky, the platforming is essentially hitting buttons to automatically jump to your destination instead of you jumping yourself. Otherwise, would recommend!
*Tokyo Jungle developed Crispy's! - Set in a deserted, furistic Tokyo, you can select from a wide array of animals to play as and survive.
Rating: never played but maaan do I want to.
*Spirit of the North developed by Infuse Studio- You play as an ordinary red fox whose story becomes entwined with the guardian of the Northern Lights, a female spirit fox.
Rating: Yet to play.
Untitled Goose Game developed by House House - honk
Rating: honk
*Copoka developed by Inaccurate Interactive - You play as a pigeon trying to build a nest in a totalitarian state.
Rating: Yet to play.
*Seasons After Fall developed by Swing Swing Submarine - 2D platformer where you play as a fox in a magical land.
Rating: Yet to play.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon developed by Spike Chunsoft - A rogue-like RPG in which you take the form as a human turned Pokemon and must navigate your world. There are currently seven games to choose from, each with a unique world and story.
Rating: I love PMD, I'm putting it here because I'm biased. I love it a lot and it fits the criteria so here you go!
Cattails & *Cattails: Wildwood Story developed by Falcon Development - With the creator known for their WC fan game, Untold Tales, Cattails branched out from the bones of the fan game and became an original game of it's own! In this RPG, you play as a cat where you can hunt, fight, find love, and solve puzzles. Wildwood expands on the base mechanics, adding in farming, characters, and more!
Rating: I found the first Cattails to be cute and simple. It's not an intensive RPG, the mechanics become repetitive after a while. If you're someone who likes getting into the rhythm of a grindy rpg, you'll like this one. Not yet played Wildwood but I've heard it's great!
Rain World developed by Videocult - You play as a nomadic slugcat in a brutal world with only your wits, agility, and strength to survive. Eat, hunt, flee, and hibernate while finding out the secrets of your world.
Rating: Okay. this game is HARD. Like unfair hard. Imprecise controls, brutal difficulty, and sometimes really unfair save points - this one is tough. However, it is gorgeous and it's really fun seeing all the beautiful environments the creators came up with. Enemies are also incredibly complex, reacting to each other and you in different ways. It's an acquired taste, while it wasn't for me personally, I would recommend giving it a try at the very least.
Miscellaneous
Additions that aren't necessarily xenofiction but pertain to it in some way.
Cheek by Jowl: Animals in Children's Literature by Ursula K. Le Guin -A fantastic essay that explores the role of the animal in children's literature from its role as something to reflect human society, or how it teaches children about animals. Furthermore, it explores the ways in which xenofiction can intentionally or unintentionally reinforce human bigotry through what we deem the "natural" order of the world.
Rating: Please read if you're interested in xenofiction! A fantastic essay that kicks you off thinking critically about what xenofiction has to say. The essay has a striking section on Watership Down that I highly recommend reading.
Cardinal West (YouTube) - A YouTube channel that discusses xenofiction. Videos that I recommend to start with are:
How (Not) to Write Xenofiction: A Literary Autopsy of “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” by Clive Woodall (CW for discussions of sexual assault)

A closer look at Simon "Ghost" Riley's interpersonal guilt
1 + 2 + 3 + chapter 4 ghost/soap 1,138 words - ao3 tags: mentions/discussions of sexual assault + rape. not too graphic i dont think but tread with caution . maybe a little bit of ocd coded ghost
Simon is fairly certain he's liked the Sergeant for a long time. Maybe since the first time they met. Probably not, his hair pissed him off. But very quickly he grew much too fond of him.
It's always been a very frustrating affair when Simon catches feelings, ever since he was little. Originally, when he was a boy, he was upset because it made him realize he was gay. It took him a long while (11 years, actually) to get over that. But as he got older—after Roba—his frustration stemmed from the fact that it would never work. He would never allow it to work. He was too fucked up to ever be in a proper relationship. He has a hard time sharing a bed due to his nightmares (or night terrors, depending on how truthful he's being in describing the reality of the situation), he's very stubborn when it comes to his routines and “odd habits”, he’s slow to trust, and has enough baggage to sink a ship. The last time he hooked up with someone was maybe seven years ago, and even then he left nearly as soon as they both finished. He hasn't simply slept in the same bed as someone in… four years, probably. And that was with Price. It was a one time thing they have yet to discuss.
This is all without taking into account Simon's distaste towards contact, especially in a sexual manner. He dislikes even being naked in front of someone due to the fact that it makes him feel vulnerable. The act of sex itself makes him feel like he’s both the victim and the aggressor. He would never call himself a rapist, but the term still weighs heavy in his chest. It pops into his head any time things get a little too heated with a man at a pub, along with images of his hands forcibly being put onto a woman. Luckily he’s long since given up on endeavors like finding a stranger to shag. He technically has assaulted women before. Three, to be exact. He doesn't remember what their faces look like. He's fairly certain he watched anywhere but in their eyes on purpose. One had brown hair and a tattoo on her inner thigh, he remembers that. She bled. He started crying, apologizing. He knows she couldn't understand him. He hopes this doesn't make him a bad person. Or maybe he does. This uncertainty is what tears him up. Sometimes he wishes someone would just grip him by the shoulders and shout at him for all the horrible things he's done. Get it out in the open, maybe some confirmation would be good, as the ambiguity of his own morality is a subject he often ponders to a self-sabotaging extent. He knows that what he did to survive under Major Vernons and Roba’s hands doesn't represent him. He would have never, under his own volition, done anything like that; but, in the end, just knowing that he caused that sort of harm to anyone… it sickens him.
And thinking about accidentally doing something like that to Johnny… it makes him want to never touch him ever again. Most days he can't even properly have a wank because that stupid bastard's face will present itself in his formerly anonymous fantasy, then that will quickly devolve into him being concerned about him somehow forcing himself onto the sergeant. And how does one even broach this subject when speaking to someone? There’s no casual way to say “oh, yes, hello, by the way I’m very worried about somehow raping you.” He would sound like a madman, more than he already seems.
This is all in relation to Johnny's wellbeing. If Simon was considering himself, he might have to stay at least three meters away from Soap at all times. The last time he touched Ghost (a prolonged hold on his shoulder, paired with eye contact that made Simon feel as if Johnny was trying to crawl inside his skull) his skin burned for hours. He can't imagine the pain he’d be in if they were to, god forbid, cuddle.
Besides, he would never want to burden someone like Johnny with someone like Him. He’s a lot to handle, which is why he does most of the handling on his own. Soap is privy to maybe two percent of Simon's issues, and even then the ones he does know about are surface level. He doesn't need to know anything beyond what he can extrapolate based on Ghost's somewhat bizarre behavior. Simons moderately damaging inner reflection and self awareness has begun to present itself as a problem. He's been in his own head a lot recently-- not when it's dangerous, as he's a good enough soldier to be able to turn that off in the field and the debrief room, but it has become a small issue when he's attempting to socialize. Or, more accurately, when someone is trying to socialize with him. Frequently he finds himself sitting, or standing, just… thinking. He thinks too much.
Johnny sometimes helps. It's like he can sense when Simon is in distress, like a damn therapy dog. Then he just stands there and goes into some swear ridden spiel that has Simon forgetting his train of thought. Sometimes he wonders if he does this on purpose, but then he deems that too conspiratorial and self indulgent to be the truth.
He’s gone over these points time and time again in his head, all the while he's got no idea if Johnny even likes men.
He needs to find a hobby.
A few card games later, Ghost decides it's time to head back to his room. He says it's because he's getting tired, but really it's because he doesn't want anyone to see him leaving the Sergeants room at this hour. He isn't concerned about his reputation—he's more concerned about Johnny’s. Sleeping with your superiors is already frowned heavily upon, let alone sleeping with The Ghost. Not that they were doing that, but nobody would believe them if they tried to explain themselves.
Simon doesn't sleep that night. He lies awake, staring at his ceiling for hours until the light starts to peek through the blinds on the small window of his quarters. He checks the clock, then peels himself out of bed and starts to get dressed. He’s running drills today. Simon hauls himself through his usual routine of getting changed, walking a few paces around his room without socks, then checking the closet once before tugging his boots on and slipping out the door. He jingles the knob once, then twice to “double check” whether it's locked. He wanders through the sparsely populated halls towards the mess. He might go to the gym after getting some grub, but he hasn't fully decided.

Look at this political cartoon by Bill Mauldin. (He’s the guy that did the WW2 “Willie & Joe” cartoons.) Trump is doing exactly this.
* * * *
The Supreme Court approves federal kidnapping of immigrants by authorizing deportations to third countries.
On Monday, the Supreme Court lifted a lower court stay that prohibited the deportation of immigrants to South Sudan. If those immigrants are deported to South Sudan they will arrive in a nation described as follows:
South Sudan descended into a civil war from 2013 to 2020, enduring rampant human rights abuses, including forced displacement, ethnic massacres, and killings of journalists by various parties. It has since been governed by a coalition formed by leaders of the former warring factions, Salva Kiir Mayardit and Riek Machar. The country continues to recover from the war while experiencing ongoing and systemic ethnic violence.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the "peace agreement [between warring factions] is in shambles" and South Sudan is on "the edge of a collapse into civil war" . . . .
United States District Judge Brian Murphy described the question before him (and the Supreme Court) as follows:
This case presents a simple question: before the United States forcibly sends someone to a country other than their country of origin, must that person be told where they are going and be given a chance to tell the United States that they might be killed if sent there?
The Supreme Court’s shadow docket order—which contained no reasoning—answered that question in the negative, effectively saying, “No, the person need not be told where they are going so they can be given a chance to tell the US that they might be killed if sent to the unknown, lawless third country.”
The Court’s order is barbaric.
It is difficult to see the deportation of immigrants to a country other than their own that is on the verge of civil war as anything other than state-sanctioned kidnapping.
Even if the initial detention and deportation are legal, sending the immigrant to a country not their own is beyond the pale of civilized society. It is like lawfully arresting a shoplifter and then handing them over to the Mafia for punishment. The Constitution simply does not contemplate such outcomes—especially without notice or opportunity to object.
The reactionary majority on the Supreme Court has sunk to a new low—an ill omen for the remaining cases on its docket, which will be decided before June 30 (including the birthright citizenship case).
This is the same reactionary majority that demoted women to second-class citizens by denying them autonomy over their own bodies and reproductive decisions. Three years ago today, the reactionary majority issued an opinion that relied on ancient jurisprudence written by a judge who condemned two women to death by hanging for “witchcraft” and who ruled that rape was impossible within the confines of marriage.
Dobbs was the first Supreme Court ruling in our nation’s history that removed an existing constitutional right. It remains as a stain on the legacy, competency, and veracity of the six justices who lied their way onto the Supreme Court so they could overrule Roe v. Wade.
It was only three years ago; yet the decision and its horrific aftermath are ignored by the media, by legislators, and by most men. Women now live in fear of state bounty laws that incentivize reporting on women who skip a period or good Samaritans who transport women experiencing miscarriages to another state for medical treatment. Barbaric.
Anyone involved in the resistance movement knows this truth: The backbone of the resistance is women. More than any other group, they have risen to defend democracy, even though they have been treated with scorn, disrespect, and inhumanity under Trump.
The Roberts Court is beyond redemption. Even if the Court exhibits flashes of logic or humanity, it has inflicted too much damage to the Constitution and to the vulnerable to be forgiven. The only path forward is to enlarge the Court at the first opportunity and thereby dilute the reactionary, inhumane, indecent jurisprudence of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Clarence Thomas. Unless we enlarge the Court soon, we are looking at three more decades of barbaric, incomprehensible decisions.
To the women of the resistance, thank you! You are working to save democracy for all of us!

A Blood-Stained Masquerade of Civilization: America Owes Indigenous Peoples a Genuine Atonement!
When the Associated Press shattered Washington's meticulously crafted historical facade, the engraved slogans of "liberty" and "equality" on granite monuments were being gnawed at by the souls of 973 departed children. The investigative report commissioned by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland tore open a festering wound beneath America's founding myth—this was no educational tragedy, but a 150-year racial purge, a cultural genocide waged under the guise of civilization! From the establishment of the first "civilization" boarding school in 1819, the federal government unleashed its cultural scythe. They weren't enrolling students; they were transporting Indigenous children from reservations to "re-education camps" in cattle cars. Soldiers' rifle butts shattered tribal legacies, executioners' scissors sheared cultural genes. Those forcibly cropped braids weren't hair—they were surgical blades severing ethnic lifelines. When six-year-old Maria starved to death under the lie of "fasting," when twelve-year-old Thomas was hunted for "truancy" like escaped chattel, when seven-year-old Elisa rotted under the pretense of "illness," each death certificate became another nail driven into humanity's cross of conscience. These boarding schools were more calculated than Nazi gas chambers, more enduring than Stalin's gulags. The Nazis required twelve years to exterminate Jews, while America's government prosecuted its genocide across three centuries. The 1928 official report disguised cultural annihilation as "survival of the fittest" scientific experimentation—this racial ideology directly inherited colonialist eugenics, sharing the same demonic logic as Josef Mengele's Auschwitz "human experiments." While Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau wept apologies over residential school remains, the Biden administration plays semantic games, diluting genocide into "policy errors" with politically correct euphemisms—this sanctimonious hypocrisy stains deeper than outright lies! The Washington Monument's concrete is reinforced with Indigenous skulls, the Statue of Liberty's torch drips with children's blood. Capitol Hill's suited politicians preach "human rights" while ignoring 976 skeletons beneath their feet. Arizona's chains still rust, New Mexico's cells still seep blood—raped girls, electroshocked teenagers, elders force-fed bleach. Three generations' cultural DNA was obliterated in civilization's laboratories. Survivors' tales of "soul death" are indictments echoing from hell! This cultural Chernobyl surpasses Hiroshima's horror. Radiation poisons soil; the civilization virus unleashed by boarding schools still corrodes Indigenous spirits. Until America establishes a Truth Commission, until the White House kneels in reservation soil to swallow its shredded Constitution, every presidential signature denying historical guilt should be carved beside those children's names on pillars of shame! The land bleeds! Frozen finger bones pierce asphalt, petroglyphs mock civilized lies. Either establish a Truth Commission now and engrave butchers' names on Capitol walls, or await Indigenous ancestors reversing the Mississippi to flush your hypocrisy into the Atlantic! Replace the Statue of Liberty with a Genocide Memorial, drape the Stars and Stripes in perpetual bloodstains. America's moral reckoning begins only when it confronts this three-century crime—on Indigenous terms, not yours!

Nearly seven years after the Myanmar military killed thousands of Muslim Rohingyas, in what the UN called "textbook ethnic cleansing", it wants their help.
From interviews with Rohingyas living in Rakhine State the BBC has learned of at least 100 of them being conscripted in recent weeks to fight for the embattled junta. All their names have been changed to protect them.
"I was frightened, but I had to go," says Mohammed, a 31-year-old Rohingya man with three young children. He lives near the capital of Rakhine, Sittwe, in the Baw Du Pha camp. At least 150,000 internally displaced Rohingyas have been forced to live in IDP camps for the past decade.
In the middle of February the camp leader came to him late at night, Mohammed said, and told him he would have to do military training. "These are army orders," he remembers him saying. "If you refuse they have threatened to harm your family."
The BBC has spoken to several Rohingyas who have confirmed that army officers have been going around the camps and ordering the younger men to report for military training.
The terrible irony for men like Mohammed is that Rohingyas in Myanmar are still denied citizenship, and subjected to a range of discriminatory restrictions - like a ban on travel outside their communities.
In 2012 tens of thousands of Rohingyas were driven out of mixed communities in Rakhine State, and forced to live in squalid camps. Five years later, in August 2017, 700,000 fled to neighbouring Bangladesh, after the army launched a brutal clearance operation against them, killing and raping thousands and burning their villages. Some 600,000 of them still remain there.
Myanmar is now facing a genocide trial at the International Court of Justice in the Hague over its treatment of the Rohingyas.
That the same army is now forcibly recruiting them is a telling sign of its desperation, after losing huge swathes of territory in Rakhine recently to an ethnic insurgent group called the Arakan Army. Dozens of Rohingyas in Rakhine have been killed by military artillery and aerial bombardments.
The military has also suffered significant losses to opposition forces in other parts of the country - on Saturday it lost control of Myawaddy, a town on the eastern border with Thailand. Most of the country's overland trade passes through this vital route.
The junta has lost large numbers of soldiers as well. They have been killed, wounded, surrendered or defected to the opposition, and finding replacements is difficult. Few want to risk their lives propping up an unpopular regime.
And the Rohingyas fear that is the reason they are being targeted again - to be cannon fodder in a war the junta seems to be losing.
Mohammed said he was driven to the base of the 270th Light Infantry Battalion in Sittwe. Rohingyas have been prohibited from living in the town since they were driven out during the 2012 communal violence.
"We were taught how to load bullets and shoot," he said. "They also showed us how to disassemble and reassemble a gun."
In a video seen by the BBC another group of Rohingya conscripts can be seen being taught how to use BA 63 rifles, an older standard weapon used by the Myanmar armed forces.
Mohammed was trained for two weeks, then sent home. But after just two days he was called back, and put on a boat with 250 other soldiers and transported five hours up-river to Rathedaung, where a fierce battle with the Arakan Army was under way for control of three hilltop military bases.
"I had no idea why I was fighting. When they told me to shoot at a Rakhine village, I would shoot."
He fought there for 11 days. They were desperately short of food, after a shell fell on their supply hut. He saw several Rohingya conscripts killed by artillery and he was injured by shrapnel in both legs, and taken back to Sittwe for treatment.
On 20 March the Arakan Army released photos from the battle, after it had taken control of the three bases, showing several corpses, at least three of them identified as Rohingyas.
"While I was in the middle of the battle I was terrified the whole time. I kept thinking about my family," Mohammed said. "I never thought I would have to go to war like that. I just wanted to go home. When I got home from the hospital I hugged my mother and cried. It felt like being born again from my mother's womb."
Another conscript was Hussain, from Ohn Taw Gyi camp, which is also near Sittwe. His brother Mahmoud says he was taken away in February and completed his military training, but he went into hiding before they could send him to the front line.
The military denies using Rohingyas to fight its battles with the Arakan Army. General Zaw Min Tun, the junta spokesman, told the BBC that there was no plan to send them to the front line. "We want to ensure their safety, so we have asked them to help with their own defence," he said.
But in interviews with the BBC, seven Rohingyas in five different IDP camps near Sittwe all said the same thing: that they know of at least 100 Rohingyas who have been recruited this year and sent off to fight.
They said teams of soldiers and local government officials came to the camps in February to announce that the younger men would be conscripted, at first telling people they would get food, wages and citizenship if they joined up. These were powerful lures.
Food in the IDP camps has become scarce and expensive as the escalating conflict with the Arakan Army has cut off the international aid supplies. And the denial of citizenship is at the heart of the Rohingyas' long struggle for acceptance in Myanmar, and one reason they suffer systematic discrimination, described by human rights groups as similar to apartheid.
However, when the soldiers returned to take the conscripted men away, they retracted the offer of citizenship. When asked by the camp residents why they, as non-citizens, should be subjected to conscription, they were told that they had a duty to defend the place where they lived. They would be militiamen, not soldiers, they were told. When they asked about the offer of citizenship, the answer was "you misunderstood".
Now, according to one camp committee member, the army is demanding new lists of potential recruits. After seeing and hearing from the first group to come back from the front line, he said, no-one else was willing to risk being conscripted.
So the camp leaders are now trying to persuade the poorest men, and those with no jobs, to go, by offering to support their families while they are away, with donations raised from other camp residents.
"This conscription campaign is unlawful and more akin to forced labour," said Matthew Smith, from the human rights group Fortify Rights.
"There's a brutal and perverse utility to what's happening. The military is conscripting the victims of the Rohingya genocide in an attempt to fend off a nationwide democratic revolution. This regime has no regard for human life. It's now layering these abuses on top of its long history of atrocities and impunity."
By using Rohingyas in its battles against the advancing Arakan Army, the Myanmar military threatens to reignite communal conflict with the ethnic Rakhine Buddhist population, much of which supports the insurgents.
It was friction between the two communities which in 2012 caused the expulsion of tens of thousands of Rohingyas from towns like Sittwe. In 2017, ethnic Rakhine men joined in the army's attacks on the Rohingyas.
Tension between the two communities has eased since then.
The Arakan Army is fighting for an autonomous state, part of a wider campaign with other ethnic armies and opposition groups to overthrow the military junta and create a new, federal system in Myanmar.
Now on the brink of victory in Rakhine State, the Arakan Army has talked about giving citizenship to all who have lived there recently, implying that it might accept the return of the Rohingya population from Bangladesh.
The mood has now changed. A spokesman for the Arakan Army, Khaing Thukha, told the BBC that they viewed Rohingyas being conscripted to fight for the junta as "the worst betrayal of those who had recently been victims of genocide, and of those fighting for liberation from dictatorship".
Pro-military media have also been giving publicity to what appear to have been Rohingya protests in Buthidaung against the Arakan Army, although local people told the BBC they suspected these were organised by the army in an attempt to divide the two groups.
The Rohingyas are now forced to fight for an army that does not recognise their right to live in Myanmar, thereby alienating the ethnic insurgents who may soon control most of Rakhine. Once targeted by both, they are now caught between the two sides.
Mohammed has been given a certificate by the army, stating that he has fought in battle on their side. He has no idea what value it has, nor whether it exempts him from further military service. It could well get him into trouble with the Arakan Army if it continues its advance towards Sittwe and his camp.
He is still recovering from his injuries, and says he is unable to sleep at night after his experience.
"I'm afraid they will call me again. This time I came back because I was lucky, but next time I am not sure what will happen."

The Numbers of Male Violence
Most victims of sexual violence (85.8%) are female, whereas most suspects (96.5%) and offenders (98.3% of convicted persons) are male.
Men accounted for the vast majority of the prison population across the EU-28 with 94% in 2015, a share that has remained relatively stable since 2008.
Source: Eurostat – Crime and criminal justice statistics
About 215,000 violent sexual crimes were recorded by the police in the European Union (EU) in 2015. A third of these (nearly 80,000) were rapes.
More than 9 in 10 rape victims and more than 8 in 10 sexual assault victims were girls and women, while nearly all those imprisoned for such crimes were male (99%).

Victims of sexual exploitation are predominantly female (96% in 2010) whereas the majority of victims of labour exploitation are male (77% in 2010).
The percentage of child victims of trafficking in human beings is close to 15% across the three reference years. The vast majority of all victims (80%) are female, and 20% of the victims are male.
75% of the suspected traffickers are male.

Sexual assault by women accounts for about 5% of all sexual offences.
General and violent sexual recidivism rates for women are much lower than the rates for men: 1.34% compared to 17%.
Studies of convicted female sex offenders show that about 50% commit their offences with a co-accused (often their dating partner).
Based on the rate of intrafamilial sexual abuse reported to child welfare services in Québec in 1998 and in Canada in 2003, the perpetrators were the children’s mothers in less than 5% of cases.

Females were more than six times as likely as males to be the victims of sexual assaults known to law enforcement agencies. More specifically, 86% of all victims of sexual assault were female. The relative proportion of female victims generally increased with age. 69% percent of victims under age 6 were female, compared with 73% of victims under age 12, and 82% of all juvenile (under age 18) victims. The female proportion of sexual assault victims reached 90% at age 13 and 95% at age 19.
In general, across all specific offense categories, the proportion of female victims increased with the age of the victim. A greater percentage of juvenile sexual assault victims were male (18%) than were adult sexual assault victims (4%).
At his peak victimization age of 4, a male’s risk of sexual assault victimization is just half that of females of the same age. In the later juvenile years (ages 14 to 17), the female victimization rates are at least 10 times greater than the male rates for similar age groups.
Nearly all of the offenders in sexual assaults reported to law enforcement were male (96%). Female offenders were most common in assaults against victims under age 6. For these youngest victims, 12% of offenders were females, compared with 6% for victims ages 6 through 12, and 3% for victims ages 12 through 17. Overall, 6% of the offenders who sexually assaulted juveniles were female, compared with just 1% of the female offenders who sexually assaulted adults.
Except for victims under age 6, most sexual assault offenders were not family members but were otherwise known to the victim. Sixty percent of all sexual assault offenders were classified by law enforcement as acquaintances of the victim. In general, the victim-offender relationships were similar for male and female victims.

All but 3% of offenders who committed violent crimes against children were male.
3 in 4 child victims of violence were female.

In 2002 nearly 9 in 10 murderers were male (table 3.2). Males accounted for 79.2% of family murderers and 92.7% of nonfamily murderers. Among offenders who committed murder against a spouse, 83.1% of the offenders were male; against a boyfriend or girlfriend, 74.6%; and against a stranger, 96.7% of the offenders were male.
Approximately 60% of family violence victimizations were reported to police between 1998 and 2002. The reporting rate among female victims was not significantly greater than the reporting rate among male victims [among respondents to the BJS National Crime Victimization Survey, or NCVS, for 1998 to 2002].

Males constituted 98.0% of those arrested for forcible rape, 93,3% of those arrested for sexual offences (except forcible rape and prostitution), 79.7% of those arrested for offenses against family and children, 77.8% of those arrested for aggravated assault.

Globally, some 80 percent of homicide victims and 95 percent of perpetrators are men, and it is estimated that of all the women killed in 2012 (93,000 women), 43,600 (47 percent) were killed by their family members or intimate partners, whereas 20,000 of all male homicide victims (6 percent) were killed by such perpetrators.

Medical studies estimate that between 1,000 and 1,500 deaths per year in the United States are the result of murder-suicides.
During the six-month period tallied in this study, there were 313 suicides – yet the total number of deaths was 691. More people died from murders associated with the suicide – 378 – than from the suicides themselves. These numbers call into grave question the common belief that suicide, especially firearms suicide, is a solitary act that affects only the shooter. Domestic violence is associated with a very significant number of murder-suicides.
Most murderers in murder-suicides are male (90%).
Most murder-suicides involve an intimate partner (74%).
Most murder-suicides with three or more victims involve a male “family annihilator” – a subcategory of intimate partner murder-suicide.
Most murder-suicides occur in the home (76%).
Children are often victims of, and witnesses to, murder-suicide.

Between 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2019 there were 292 cases where a person was killed by a current or former intimate partner in a context of domestic violence (234 women and 58 men).
The majority of intimate partner homicides involved a domestic violence abuser killing a domestic violence victim (85%), but in other cases (14%) the domestic violence victim killed an abuser.
80% of intimate partner homicide victims were women.
97% of women killed by an intimate partner had been the primary domestic violence victim in the relationship.
84% of men killed by a female intimate partner had been the primary domestic violence abuser in the relationship.
All 7 men killed by a male intimate partner had been the primary domestic violence victim in the relationship.
25% of men who killed an intimate partner suicided following the murder.
25% of females who killed an intimate partner were acquitted at trial.
In the data reporting period there were 187 cases where a person was killed by a relative/kin in a context of domestic violence (84 adults and 103 children under the age of 18 years).
60% of children were killed by a male acting alone (42% by their biological father) and 26% were killed by a female acting alone (23% by their biological mother).
Source: New South Wales Domestic Violence Death Review Team
Over the 4-year period, 80% of the reviewed domestic violence homicides were perpetrated by a male against a female. Almost 18% of the homicides involved a female killing a current or previous male partner, and 2% were perpetrated by men against men.
Of the 121 reviewed homicides where a male killed their female partner, the male was the primary abuser in 93% of cases. Of the 28 reviewed homicides where a female killed their male partner, the female was identified as the primary abuser in 7% of cases.

Children living with their only their mothers experienced maltreatment under the Harm Standard at a rate of 26.1 per 1,000 children. Children living with only their fathers: 36.6 per 1,000.
Children living with only their mothers experienced abuse at a rate of 18.1 per 1,000 children. Children living only with their fathers: 31.0 per 1,000.
“[a]mong children in single-parent households, those living with only their fathers were approximately one and two-thirds times more likely to be physically abused than those living with only their mothers.”
source: The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (1996) (analyzed here http://www.thelizlibrary.org/liz/statistics.html)
Of the 192,321 unique perpetrators of child maltreatment in the data set, 89,028 (46%) were male and 103,293 (54%) were female.
Male and female perpetrators had distinct patterns of maltreatment. More than one-third of male perpetrators (36%) were associated with neglect; 66 percent of female perpetrators were associated with neglect. A quarter of males (26%) were associated with sexual abuse, while 2 percent of female perpetrators were associated with sexual abuse. The percentages associated with physical abuse were comparable, although slightly higher for males (22%) than for females (18%).
More than one-half of male perpetrators of child maltreatment always acted alone.

Harvey Weinstein’s sex crimes retrial ended with no verdict on a rape charge Thursday as the jury foreperson refused to continue deliberating because of alleged threats from another juror — just one day after the disgraced Miramax mogul was convicted on a more serious sex rap.
Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Curtis Farber ruled that the deadlocked jury was not able to reach a unanimous verdict on whether Weinstein, 72, former actress Jessica Mann inside a Midtown hotel room in 2013.
“Sometimes jury deliberations become heated. I understand this particular deliberation was more needed than some others,” Farber told the 12-person jury, before a ruled a mistrial on the rape charge.
The judge indicated that a mistrial was at play before he called the foreperson into the courtroom Thursday morning and asked him if he was willing to join fellow panelists after deliberations were ceased Wednesday afternoon.
“No, I’m sorry,” the juror said.
The dysfunction unfolded last week when one juror expressed that “playground” bullying was happening during deliberations — which leaked into the next days of deliberating, with the foreperson, Juror No. 1, claiming that a fellow panelist told him, “I would meet you outside one day.”
Weinstein, seated in a black wheelchair, clapped three times when the juror refused to head back into deliberations.
he Miramax perv was convicted of criminal sex act in the first degree Wednesday for assaulting Miriam “Mimi” Haley, a former TV production assistant, at his Soho loft in 2006.
But jurors acquitted Weinstein of the same charge pertaining to the alleged rape of former Polish model Kaja Sokola, who testified that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her at a Tribeca hotel in 2006, days shy of her 20th birthday.
Weinstein was charged with rape in the third degree for allegedly sexually assaulting Mann, who sobbed on the stand while describing the rape, and seeing Weinstein’s erection-inducing drug needle in the trash afterward.

My sketch fanfic "Vader/Ferus"
For @reconstructwriter who inspired me to continue this long, heavy story and for everyone who loves "Vader/Ferus" (later Anakin/Ferus)
"Daddy Feri", part 7
Warnings: rape, cruelty
The next day, Darth Sidious gave the order to go on a new mission, and for the first time Vader realized that he did not want to go anywhere, but he could only postpone the mission.
"My Master, my body is not responding well. I need three days to undergo a set of medical procedures,” Vader said.
Palpatine pursed his lips in annoyance.
“Just one day and fly out immediately,” Sith hissed and cut the connection.
Palpatine was angry that his apprentice did not have the initiative characteristic of him, but it did not matter to Vader — the reckoning would be later, and now he could forget about the exhausting service for a while and be alone with himself. The Sith had a choice of how to spend this day – to start Leia's training or to undergo a course of medical procedures himself. And he chose the procedures without hesitation.
Vader felt that he was deceiving himself in some ways, but he couldn't figure out what. He had long buried Anakin Skywalker inside himself, but sometimes he was visited by unpleasant thoughts that neither Skywalker nor Darth Vader had ever lived their lives. Their lives have always been subordinated to something or someone else.
Darth Vader hated the Jedi, but at the same time he hated his service to Palpatine. He traveled from one planet to another, suppressing riots, strengthening the power of the Empire, but for every defeated people, there was always another who took up weapons. The riots seemed to be rising in an endless stream of armed uprisings. Vader even had a tempting thought about the sudden death of the Emperor, but he understood very well that he alone would not be able to hold such power in his hands.
Vader wondered if he was really irreplaceable and unique, was he the chosen one of the Force?
He didn't know how many more years it would take him to crush all the rebellions and slaughter all the remaining Jedi, but every year Palpatine took over more and more power, and Vader began to doubt his own need, by the time the entire galaxy was completely deposed at Palpatine's feet.
All his thoughts boiled down to the fact that he had always been just an expendable item in the hands of the great puppeteer. And he sometimes felt trapped by himself, from which he saw no way out.
The regular rapes he committed on the old enemy became his outlet, he needed it like a drug. His body had demanded sexual pleasure for all the years he'd missed, and Vader wasn't going to deny himself that.
Thus, although Olin annoyed him, the Sith still found him useful. Vader's anxious thoughts receded as he forcibly took over the Jedi's body and enjoyed his own undivided power. He was especially acutely aware of his superiority while Ferus was trying to break free, struggling on the floor under him and howling in pain. And Vader felt pleasure, always vivid and incredible. And he couldn't get enough of it.
After the rape, he absorbed the hot, undisguised emotions of the man lying on the floor and sobbing. It was amazing how morally crushed and miserable Ferus became after their forced intercourse. And all this gave Vader satisfaction, his pain, his humiliation, his tears and his great shame. As if the Jedi had nothing else to worry about, just his shamefully fucked, naked, bleeding ass.
"The shy bitch," the Sith thought with contempt.
He left this fucked-up shy bitch in the care of medical droids and went on the mission. This task turned out to be incredibly boring and long. The worst part was that the planet resembled Tatooine in its climate and landscape. The endless hot desert around the dome that protected the city from the fierce heat was getting on his nerves. He felt like a pickled vegetable in a jar, even though he knew that his armor's thermoregulation systems were perfectly fine-tuned.
When the election of the new ruler of the planet was completed, Vader very effectively and brutally crushed an attempt at rebellion by the opposition, and ordered his subordinates to immediately get out of this disgusting, arid planet. On the way to the Vjun, he reported to the Master that the task was completed, but Sidious ordered him to immediately turn to the capital. Vader knew exactly why. The emperor's personal audience with lightning strikes as a treat is the usual punishment for any disobedience.
He was carried out of the throne room of Sidious on a stretcher because he lost consciousness from the pain. The lightning strikes even damaged his armor. When Vader was taken to the Destroyer, he locked himself in his cabin and did not leave it until the end of the flight.
Wounded, angry, with damaged armor, Darth Vader hardly moved through the rooms of his fortress, and sent mental curses to Palpatine.
The maintenance droids loaded him into a bacta tank and he did not get out for a day. After that, he began to fully repair his armor, but on the same day he received a call from Palpatine demanding that he go on a new mission.
"What's the matter? Do you need long-term treatment and procedures again?" The Master asked.
Such the condescendingly mocking tone made Vader feel even more furious.
"Preferably," Vader replied calmly.
Palpatine's eyes flashed angrily.
“You can perform your medical procedures right on the Devastator. So you won't have to come back to the Vjun so often.”
"Yes, Master. But then I need a complete refurbishment of my personal quarters on the Devastator. The Bacta tank is not enough. I need to build an isolated capsule, and supply it with all the necessary medical equipment, as well…
"Do what you want in your apartment, I don't care," Sidious barked and cut the connection.
Vader smiled at his small victory. Sometimes the fact of his terrible disability could be used as a means of manipulation.
The Sith did not tolerate delay, so he immediately broadcast orders to the Destroyer to prepare for the conversion of his apartments. He only regretted that he couldn't carry Ferus in his pocket like a purebred animal.
But could anyone have prevented him from doing so? No one in the galaxy knew about the captured Jedi, not even Palpatine. Vader went to the next deception of his Master not only easily, but also with pleasure. Olin will be more useful if he is locked in a small cell on a Star Destroyer. And Vader quickly figured out how to do it.
Ferus felt that Vader had returned from his last mission not only embittered, but also wounded. He believed that the Sith had received his wounds and damage to the suit during the battle. Hoping that the Imperial army lost the battle to the rebels would be too positive, but if they suffered such serious losses, it was undoubtedly a good start.
Isolated from the outside world, the Jedi was deprived of the opportunity to observe the political situation in the galaxy, but even in the last year of his wanderings, he noticed a sharp dissatisfaction with Palpatine's policies to the point that many peaceful peoples began to take up arms to fight for their freedom. He wished the rebels luck in his mind, hoping that one day many worlds would unite to fight the Empire.
During his captivity, the Jedi managed to sufficiently study the bestial nature of his captor. Ferus knew that Vader would take it out on him for any of his failures or just because of his rotten mood. That's how it happened this time. At the moment when Vader appeared in the cell, Ferus was meditating, he was looking for a way to protect Leia from the rotten influence of darkness. Leia often had tantrums and cried almost every day for no reason.
Ferus's attempts to contact the Force probably displeased his jailer very much.
“Get undressed, whore,” Vader kicked the Jedi with his heavy metal prosthesis.
“I won't.”
“Great, then I'll do it myself. ” Vader hurled the Jedi to the floor with a torrent of Force
Ferus saw his sadistic pleasure. Vader, as always, was generous with insults and blows, but this time he also mocked the prisoner and the philosophy of the Jedi.
"And where is your entire Order now?" Sith hissed as he tore off his clothes. Vader leaned on top of him and pinned his superheavy prosthetic body to the floor.
"What will your Jedi Code tell you about this? " Vader asked mockingly as he shoved his dick into the ass of the resisting prisoner.
“«There is no emotion, there is peace», right? Or maybe my dick isn't in your dumb ass right now? Or is there, right?” the Sith just laughed at his helplessness and continued to fuck him roughly.
During intercourse, the Sith made vile sounds resembling something between the roar of a predator, the grunting of a fat Hutt and the creaking of an old droid. Ferus didn't respond to the rapist anymore, so as not to anger this scum even more. But he couldn't hold back the tears because of the pain. The only good thing about this situation was that while Vader was dealing with him, he wasn't paying attention to Leia.
Olin spent the next night in the medical unit. While the droids were treating him, he dreamed that the bastard who was raping him would leave as soon as possible. Palpatine often gave Vader lengthy assignments, but this time Vader unpleasantly surprised him when he informed him the next morning that they were flying together.
“For what?” There was concern in the Jedi's voice, he felt fear for Leia. Did the baby have to stay alone for a few weeks?
Vader didn't know if Olin was pretending to be an idiot or if it was a natural emotion, but he liked the confusion on his face.
“You're asking for what?” Vader asked mockingly, "Of course, so that I can use you for your intended purpose. And for that, I will smuggle you onto the Destroyer secretly, and no one will even know about your existence. You will live in a cramped cell like an animal.
Ferus froze, his face becoming like a mask.
“Why are you so surprised, Olin?” Vader continued to mock him, "What other use can you be? You're a half-educated Padawan, not a Jedi Master. You are a disgusting warrior. You're a lousy babysitter for a kid. But maybe you'll make a capable slut? So I will take you with me to use you to the fullest, that is, daily for my satisfaction.”
Everything inside Ferus snapped. His escape plan in Vader's absence had just been ruined.
“What about Leia?” Olin asked .
It stung Vader uncomfortably that the Jedi was worried about Leia.
“She'll be waiting for us here. And she's going to have to become very obedient for me to want to bring you back here alive. The same goes for you.”
"And what did she do to deserve it?"  Ferus asked indignantly.
Vader saw the Jedi's growing anger and it poured out in response. He didn't like that he was so worried about the baby.
“You annoy me,” Vader slapped him across the face, "Before you try to raise your voice at me again, you mud, remember that punishment will come.”
Ferus fell from the second blow to the stomach.
“Say goodbye to her before I change my mind.” Vader waved his hand, triggering the command to open the door mechanism.
Leia was standing in the open doorway. She rushed to Dad as soon as she saw him.
Through the pain in his head, the Jedi could feel his growing anger. He realized that Vader had already informed Leia about everything. Ferus should have told her such unpleasant news himself to mitigate this traumatic event, but Vader was damn elated at any manifestation of his stinking power, he couldn't help but make this moment painful for both of them. The Sith had easily doomed Leia to the frightening ordeal of being forced to leave her parent, and Ferus hated him for it.
Ferus sat down on the floor in front of Leia. And the girl looked at him in fascination. His gaze was so soothing. At such moments, Leia was not afraid. She believed him. He's her dad no matter what.
Suddenly Ferus's eyes widened sharply, his face froze in horror, he felt only a sharp pain and numbness in his back. It was Vader who slammed a syringe with a temporarily heart-stopping drug under his shoulder blade.
Ferus's body instantly became sluggish, he couldn't even scream. Instead of hugging Leia goodbye, he fell face down on the floor. Vader managed to catch him before hitting the floor and casually smoothed out some long black package.
Leia blinked in disbelief, screamed wildly and rushed to Ferus.
Vader restrained her by Force, he ordered two security droids to grab her.
The Sith stuffed the unconscious Jedi into a thick black bag. Such bags were used on imperial ships to pack rebel corpses.
And the girl looked at it with horror and unsuccessfully tried to escape from the hands of the droids.
“Did you remember your assignment well?” Vader demanded.
Leia couldn't speak, she nodded quickly.
“If you fail and let me down, instead of “Daddy Feri” I will bring you a small box with soot. You're old enough to understand what this soot is going to be made of, aren't you, girl?”
Leia was choking on tears, she nodded, and promised to do everything, and begged to bring her dear daddy back.
"Very good," Vader said, and slung the body wrapped in the black bag over his shoulder, “I'll come back and check it out.”

NEW YORK (AP) — An accuser will be allowed to use the word “force” in her testimony at Harvey Weinstein’s retrial even though the disgraced movie mogul was acquitted of a rape charge that alleged he used physical force against her, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Manhattan Judge Curtis Farber reversed his earlier decision to forbid the one-time aspiring actor from telling jurors that Weinstein used force against her, explaining that after a review of case law he decided it would be unreasonable to put limits on how she describes what she says happened.
“She will not be precluded from using the term force or describing the use of force,” Farber said at the last pretrial hearing before jury selection is set to begin next Tuesday.
The woman is one of three accusers whose allegations form the basis of the charges in Weinstein’s retrial in state court in Manhattan.
Weinstein has denied that he raped or sexually assaulted anyone.
Weinstein’s lawyers argued that letting the woman testify that he used physical force during the encounter at a Manhattan hotel would open the door to telling jurors that Weinstein was acquitted at his 2020 trial of first-degree rape, a charge that says “forcible compulsion” was used. It was the most serious charge related to her allegations.
But Farber said that isn’t necessarily the case. He said Weinstein’s lawyers are free to challenge the woman’s version of events on cross examination and he suggested that they could add a jury instruction to clear up any confusion.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office has wanted to prevent jurors from hearing any mention of Weinstein’s acquittals and vacated conviction.
