Short Circuit 2 (1988)
Tumblr media
In many ways, Short Circuit 2 is kind of a mess. It’s too long, key characters from the first film don't return (and the explanation for why is weak) and several plot threads go nowhere or are needlessly complicated. Nonetheless… the characters have so much charm and the parts that work are so good it wins you over. The first Short Circuit was a bit of a divisive film but if it appealed to you, definitely check out this sequel.
Sometime after the events of Short Circuit, Benjamin "Ben" Jabituya Jahveri (still played by Fisher Stevens) is now a struggling toymaker who lands a huge contract with the help of a street hustler named Fred Ritter (Michael McKean). When the run-down factory they’re using is ransacked by thieves tunneling beneath the building to get to a collection of valuable jewels, Johnny 5 (voiced by Tim Blaney) is sent to help his friend. In a big city with so many distractions and with many looking to exploit the innocent robot, can Ben fulfill the toy order on time AND catch the eye of the beautiful Sandy Banatoni (Cythia Gibb)?
Why does this film has a subplot about a gang who convinces Johnny 5 to help them steal car stereos and another about Fred being tempted to sell Johnny 5 to a tech company on top of the bank plot, the toy deadline, the romance and Johnny 5’s sudden realization that, as a machine, he doesn’t have the same rights as a human being? It’s as if writers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson came into the producer’s office with plans for not one, but three sequels to Short Circuit. “Sorry boys, but you only get to make one” they were told. Instead of picking the best ideas and leaving the rest for later, they just decided to include EVERYTHING. On the upside, this means Short Circuit 2 moves VERY fast. If there’s an element that doesn’t quite work, you’re moving onto the next thing before you know it.
Luckily, few elements DON’T work. Once we get into it, the relationship between Ben and Sandy is tender. You want them to get together. As for Johnny 5, he's so sweet and innocent that seeing him reading Pinocchio and Frankenstein, and realizing what those stories mean to him melts your heart. The special effects are once again excellent, largely due to everything we see on-screen actually being there when the cameras were rolling. It’s all puppetry and practical special effects. Sometimes you don’t realize how much of a difference that makes until you see it in action.
Like the first film, this sequel has many hilarious lines to offer. So many that, once again, you’re prone to miss one or two while you catch your breath. Director Kenneth Johnson, writers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson lack restraint. There is too much going on and it gets even wilder during the conclusion when the story takes yet another turn but there's one aspect of the conclusion that wraps up the movie so well it allows you to overlook the flaws. It’s a bit of a retcon, as the original Short Circuit clearly established that Ben WAS born in the United States while now, he’s applying for citizenship but where it leads will make you say "continuity be damned".
You don’t need to have grown up with Short Circuit 2 to enjoy it, though you do have to have enjoyed the first. What worked in that film works again here. Despite the overstuffed story and at least one element that hasn't aged well, those anyone excited to hear that they made a Short Circuit 2 will be happy with these results. (On DVD, March 30, 2019)

Favorite Crime Boss Villains
Tumblr media
Giovanni - The Pokémon franchise's original Big Bad and longstanding uber-villain, Giovanni is the boss of the Team Rocket criminal organization. Through much of the franchise such as in the Pokémon the Series anime, Pokémon Origins OVA, Pokémon Adventures manga, trading card game, and recent video games, Giovanni is depicted as someone who's a fine medium between a Moriarty and a Xanatos. He's powerful and power-hungry, utterly without moral scruples, and holds an ambition to spread his criminal empire across the entire world. He's also a meticulous schemer, a competent businessman, and a suave, charismatic figure as respectable as he is fearsome which is why he draws in so many loyal goons.* All of these factors have granted Giovanni his longevity. He's just too iconic a bad guy to keep down.
*Obligatory shout-out to Jessie, James and Meowth here!
Tumblr media
Wilson Fisk - If you want to see the ultimate fictional caricature of a criminal mafioso, look no further than Marvel's Wilson Fisk, better known as the Kingpin. As tall as he is wide, with a big bald head and fancy white suit, and often seen walking with a cane or chomping down on a cigar, the Kingpin is an inherently silly character....which is what makes it so impressive that he's actually played so utterly straight that all that silliness loops back around to making him terrifying. He's the ultimate, most literal example of a mob boss who makes themselves up to be some kind of classy, distinguished gentleman but in reality is a brutish, monstrous thug, able to crush anyone who displeases him with his bare hands. Fisk has appeared in multiple media throughout the years and has been superbly portrayed by the likes of Stan Jones, Walker Edmiston, Roscoe Lee Browne, David Sobolov, Gregg Berger, Travis Willingham, Jim Cummings, Tim Blaney, Michael Clarke Duncan and Vincent D'onofrio.

My alarm went off at 10:30 I fell back to sleep til 12:05, and I have no what timeline I woke up in(For context, Biden dropped out at 12:46 and the Nascar race started ~1:30).
Idk what even to think about politics other than it's going to be a long fucking few months and it's going to be terrifying the closer we get to that Tuesday in November. I saw the news about Biden while my sister was in the shower and I knocked on the bathroom door and she said she was almost done(We only have one bathroom) and I was like "No I have to tell you this NOW" and she's all doom and gloom but I have to remain positive(She also voted Trump in 2016 and now hates him but she'll never know I still hold that against her).
Woke up to a lot of stuff too(Tim Minear interview, Chiefs at training camp) and didn't have a lot of wakeup time with everything and it's been a very odd day. I was very awake awake awake then mid Nascar race I just felt all the energy leave me and had a mood drop. Probably belated wakeup stuff. Also my dad was working in the kitchen so I couldn't airfry what I wanted to.
Nascar was... today. Blaney was right about Larson being their golden boy. It was infuriating how obvious they put off not calling that caution so Larson could get the win.
Idk if I want to check out politics stuff(Should catch up on shit) and doom and gloom or just put on Fearless and play some House Flipper 2. I know what I want but I feel like I should doom scroll. Idk

[ad_1] For one night time at Vivint Area, the long run took keep watch over of middle courtroom because the Junior Jazz celebrated their 2nd annual Lead In combination Award rite. Over 3,000 attendees had been handled to an evening full of actions, particular popularity, meals, and a celeb basketball recreation that drew as many laughs because it did cheers for one of the most maximum recognizable faces in Utah.  Junior Jazz Superstar Sport Sign up for us March eighth at Vivint Area for an evening of a laugh and basketball with Junior Jazz individuals from around the state! You don’t need to pass over it: https://t.co/vlZs1iK2VC #TakeNote pic.twitter.com/VuT6YmKWY2 — Utah Jazz (@utahjazz) February 28, 2022 The longest-running formative years basketball league within the NBA, Junior Jazz spreads throughout six other states (Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, and Nevada) and affects the lives of over 60,000 children and lots of extra.  So to mix the elemental talents of basketball whilst preaching and working towards its 5 core values, Junior Jazz is seen as a vital stepping stone within the expansion of the formative years who take part. Thru its Lead In combination Initiative — the cause of the birthday party on Tuesday night time — all the ones concerned with the group are inspired to include and educate its 5 values: Recognize, Management, Sportsmanship, Kindness, and Positivity. That’s what the birthday party at Vivint Area used to be all about — embracing those that’ve taken the 5 core values to center and practiced them during the season off and on the courtroom.  The group passed out awards to people who went above and past, together with an Professional, Program, and Trainer of the 12 months.  AWARDS:Recognize Award: Bronx Zayas — South Jordan Game MiddleManagement Award: Carter Bowen — Copperview Game MiddleKindness Award: Scout Blaney — Delightful Grove TownSportsmanship Award: Ounces Schoenfeld — Clinton TownPositivity Award: Ty Poulson — Syracuse Town Officers of the 12 months: Jen Brown and Dashaun Sensible — West Level TownA veteran and a rookie, Brown and Sensible blended to present the Jr. Jazz league of West Level Town a beautiful enjoy.  Brown, an professional for over a decade, used to be extensively sought out for her distinctive taste of officiating. Extra than simply calling fouls and blowing a whistle, there have been at all times classes to be realized, and he or she used to be more than pleased to show them. She would repeatedly provide an explanation for to the athletes why a decision used to be made or what they did improper, serving to them reinforce.  For Sensible, a soccer participant at Syracuse Prime College, officiating for him used to be a technique to give again to a neighborhood that gave him such a lot and helped lift him. He has members of the family nonetheless taking part in within the leagues, so given a possibility to spend time with them and nonetheless take part in Jr. Jazz, it used to be a very easy determination. Program of the 12 months: Clearfield Town Trainer of the 12 months: James Couts — Layton, West Level, and Clearfield.Arguably the hardest-working guy in Jr. Jazz, Couts used to be unquestionably the trainer of the 12 months after main six other groups during the season.  For Couts, a father at house, training such a lot of groups in Jr. Jazz used to be merely about spending extra time along with his children and serving to others increase. It wasn’t all concerning the profitable and dropping — even though there used to be a good quantity of profitable — it used to be about ensuring they evolved the precise talents off and on the courtroom to reach existence.  Whilst the awards rite were given the birthday celebration began, the night time in reality started when the Superstar All-Celebrity recreation tipped off at 7 p.m. That includes individuals of the Utah Jazz broadcast group, a number of former school and professional athletes, and one of the most maximum
well known names within the media, the sport introduced laughter, hysterics and a minimum quantity of basketball ability.  After all, it used to be David Locke’s Black squad out dueling Alema Harrington’s White group 61-59 in a recreation that used to be gained on a shot with lower than 5 seconds to play. Former skilled basketball participant and social media influencer Elijah Davy stole the display along with his skillset for Locke’s group whilst present Jazz TV Analyst Mike Smith thrived for Harrington’s squad.  However what can have been the largest takeaway from the sport used to be that simply because you quilt Utah basketball for a dwelling does no longer imply that you simply belong at the identical courtroom the Jazz play on. Native beat writers Andy Larsen (Salt Lake Tribune), Ryan Miller (KSL), and Tony Jones (The Athletic) moved from their media spots within the stands to play at the courtroom, and the effects had been as anticipated.  Larsen led the gang with 5 issues, 3 rebounds and showcased a propensity for hustle. Miller did a bit little bit of the entirety, and Jones, a believed basketball savant, completed with two issues, 3 assists and showcased excellent imaginative and prescient at the courtroom. The night time used to be a rousing luck and a technique to honor the ongoing excellence and legacy of everybody concerned with the Junior Jazz group.  [ad_2] #Junior #Jazz #Celebrates #Annual #Lead #Award #Rite

Short Circuit (1986)
Tumblr media
Short Circuit may be a clone of E.T. and what it does has been done better later with The Iron Giant. Still, there’s room in your heart for one more kind-hearted, misunderstood, big-eyed outsider who befriends a fellow loner, isn’t there? While some aspects of this charming, often very funny comedy haven't aged well, it's got a lot of appeal.
When a military robot is struck by lightning and becomes self aware, its creators immediately assume it’s become a menace. Actually, Number 5 (voiced by Tim Blaney) just wants to learn about the world and make friends. After meeting Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy) the two must convince those after the robot - specifically its chief engineer, Newton (Steve Guttenberg) that its behaviour is not a mechanical malfunction; that “Number 5 is alive!”
Director John Badham gets key elements right. Firstly, the robot’s design. With its big eyes and voice (just the right mix of synthetic and goofy), you immediately fall for Number 5 even before you get to know it. As you spend more time with the robot, you get a good taste of its personality, including its fears and goals. The incredible special effects and puppetry help a great deal. What you’re seeing is an actual robot being interacting with real people and it works wonders. The special effects have aged incredibly well and call me crazy, but the machine has actual chemistry with Ally Sheedy? They’re so good together you almost wonder if she’ll end up going with the metal bookworm instead of the obvious love interest instead…
It’s tried-and-true stuff but it works. Kids will have a great time laughing at Number 5’s antics as it expands its lexicon and attempts to figure out this big world of ours. What about the adults, or those who might’ve grown up with the film but haven’t seen it in 20 or so years? For you, I say hold on. One aspect of the film will take you by surprise: Fisher Stevens as Ben. This character is an oddball. With his thick Indian accent and knack for mixing up idioms, he's a stereotype being portrayed by a white actor in makeup. What's strange is that dialogue reveals he’s lived in the United States his whole life. So it isn’t even that he’s a foreigner, it’s that… he’s such a nerd he doesn’t understand the basics of human communication? Seems so from the way he reacts to women. I can't tell you whether you'll be offended or not. All I can say is that he's got all the best lines in the movie. You’ll want to watch Short Circuit with the remote handy so you can pause and rewind it to write down and then memorize some of the dialogue. It’s memorable stuff but comes so fast you’re likely to drown out a good chunk of it with your own laughs.
Aside from one questionable aspect (that still somewhat works nonetheless), Short Circuit has the makings of a lasting childhood favorite you’ll want to show to your children someday. It’s got likeable characters, a story that's both fun and harmless, many big laughs (some of which only the parents will get) and incredible special effects. The script is memorable and endlessly quotable. I liked it even more the second time. (On Blu-ray, February 22, 2019)
