208 - This Is Where I Leave You

It’s time to sit shiva with a slew of stars and 2014′s This Is Where I Leave You. Adapted from Jonathan Tropper from his own novel and directed by Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy, the film casts Jason Bateman as a man whose life falls apart at the hour of his father’s death. His mother, played by Jane Fonda, then tasks the entire family to sit shiva in his honor and seriocomic hijinks ensue. Levy would cast a feast of famous and noteworthy names to fill out the friends and family (including Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Kathryn Hahn, Corey Stoll, and more), but their combined skills were not enough to lift the film’s dated humor and stuck-in-neutral emotions off the ground.

The film debuted as a TIFF gala and was critically dismissed, with audiences feeling similarly underwhelmed upon release a few weeks later. This week, we talk about how the film sidesteps around a quite non-Jewish cast and where it places in the Fonda’s late-career era. We also discuss Fey’s limitations with her many crying scenes, our favorite performances from the Girls, and the 2014 TIFF lineup.

      eddie's heart rate spiked like a runaway coaster into the bottom of his throat only to plummet just as suddenly. dim reflections on silver rings quivered as eddie rubbed fingertips along the insides of his thumbs, alleviating the sudden jolt to his nerves. he’d been so lost in the valley of his thoughts, he’d almost forgotten she was there.

      ❝ shit . . . yeah, yeah, ❞ replied a weary chuckled, ❝ right now’s kind of a bullshit time for secrets. ❞ breathy relief curled the corners of parched lips. a genuine grin, unfettered by a polite need to take an edge off the collective tension. and yet it failed to touch his eyes.

      dawn was here then gone. yawning rays filtered in an overcast dream failed to chase away last night’s fog. dense vapors pooled into a creeping moat at the bottom of the slope. off-white pickets stripped by brine jutted in a row of uneven teeth. the inside of a grave was a livelier view. nothing stirred beyond the grime-stricken pane. just the occasional creak of the old walls buffeting the breeze.

💋 That's SO Fetch!: What To Read After Watching Mean Girls

🩷 Good morning, bookish bats! I actually have a weird, complicated relationship with Mean Girls. After reading Queen Bees & Wannabes, my mother didn't let me watch the 2004 film, as if THAT would somehow protect me from the realities of middle and high school (WOW, feeling old writing this now).

👠 Yet somehow, I CONSTANTLY ended up around people obsessed with the movie (and we love Tina Fey, so, I can't blame a single person). Right before the mess of 2020, I even had the luck of seeing Renee Rapp perform as Regina on Broadway, and WOAH. It was everything (and my little, late-in-life bi heart has a whole new appreciation for it). Funnily enough, my parents and sister were with me, and my mom thought nothing of it. It's been a while since I've done one of these posts (namely because of the strike, though I have a few sitting in my queue), so I figured now was the perfect time.
