As we commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, I renew attention to David Byrne's American Utopia. The central idea is that the world depends on our individual, inner transformation of mind and heart, which we cannot accomplish alone. Our true selves are linked to one another through relationships.
Byrne covers Janelle Monae’s “Hell You Talmbout” to name African-American victims of American law enforcement and the systemic racism that continues to perpetuate this ongoing legal form of genocide.
Say their names.
Eric Garner, John Crawford III, Michael Brown, Ezell Ford, Dante Parker, Michelle Cusseaux, Laquan McDonald, George Mann, Tanisha Anderson, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, Rumain Brisbon, Jerame Reid, Matthew Ajibade, Frank Smart, Natasha McKenna, Tony Robinson, Anthony Hill, Mya Hall, Phillip White, Eric Harris, Walter Scott, William Chapman II, Alexia Christian, Brendon Glenn, Victor Manuel Larosa, Jonathan Sanders, Freddie Blue, Joseph Mann, Salvado Ellswood, Sandra Bland, Albert Joseph Davis, Darrius Stewart, Billy Ray Davis, Samuel Dubose, Michael Sabbie, Brian Keith Day, Christian Taylor, Troy Robinson, Asshams Pharoah Manley, Felix Kumi, Keith Harrison McLeod, Junior Prosper, Lamontez Jones, Paterson Brown, Dominic Hutchinson, Anthony Ashford, Alonzo Smith, Tyree Crawford, India Kager, La’vante Biggs, Michael Lee Marshall, Jamar Clark, Richard Perkins, Nathaniel Harris Pickett, Benni Lee Tignor, Miguel Espinal, Michael Noel, Kevin Matthews, Bettie Jones, Quintonio Legrier, Keith Childress Jr., Janet Wilson, Randy Nelson, Antronie Scott, Wendell Celestine, David Joseph, Calin Roquemore, Dyzhawn Perkins, Christopher Davis, Marco Loud, Peter Gaines, Torrey Robinson, Darius Robinson, Kevin Hicks, Mary Truxillo, Demarcus Semer, Willie Tillman, Terrill Thomas, Sylville Smith, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Terence Crutcher, Paul O’Neal, Alteria Woods, Jordan Edwards, Aaron Bailey, Ronell Foster, Stephon Clark, Antwon Rose II, Botham Jean, Pamela Turner, Dominique Clayton, Atatiana Jefferson, Christopher Whitfield, Christopher Mccorvey, Eric Reason, Michael Lorenzo Dean, Breonna Taylor.
This non-comprehensive list of Black people in the United States killed by police since July 2014 was compiled by National Public Radio’s Code Switch as part of an episode entitled “A Decade of Watching Black People Die.”

Alice Childress (October 12, 1916 – August 14, 1994) was a novelist, playwright, and actress acknowledged as "the only African American woman to have written, produced, and published plays for four decades." She described her work as trying to portray the have-nots in a have society, saying: "My writing attempts to interpret the 'ordinary' because they are not ordinary. Each human is uniquely different. Like snowflakes, the human pattern is never cast twice. We are uncommonly and marvelously intricate in thought and action, our problems are most complex and, too often, silently borne." She became involved in social causes and formed an off-Broadway union for actors. She took odd jobs to pay for herself, including domestic worker, photo retoucher, assistant machinist, saleslady, and insurance agent. She studied Drama at the American Negro Theatre and performed there for 11 years. She acted in Abram Hill and John Silvera's On Strivers Row, Theodore Brown's Natural Man, and Philip Yordan's Anna Lucasta. There she won acclaim as an actress in numerous other productions, and moved to Broadway with the transfer of ANT's hit Anna Lucasta, which became the longest-running all-black play in Broadway history; she won a Tony Award nomination for her starring performance. In 1949 she began her writing career with the one-act play Florence, which she directed and starred in, and which reflected many of the themes that are characteristic of her later writing, including the empowerment of African American women, interracial politics, and working-class life. In Florence, an African American, Southern, working-class woman, Mama Whitney, decides to travel by train from SC to NYC to retrieve her daughter, Florence, who is a struggling actor. However, after a white woman waiting for the same train offers to help Florence by recommending her for a job as a maid, Mama Whitney decides to send her daughter money instead of bringing her home. Her goal in writing Florence was to "settle an argument with fellow actors who said that in a play about Negroes and whites, only a 'life and death thing' like lynching is interesting on stage." #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #sigmagammarho https://www.instagram.com/p/CjnBFgjuvdd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Who’s Clapping
I thought it would be interesting to follow up this post with a little research into who Donald Trump brought in as cheerleaders for the signing ceremony for his executive order on policing. It is actually a harder exercise than it seems. You might think that links or expanded captions would be de rigueur journalistic practice in an era of digital news and reporting, but it’s not. I first located a list of attendees from CNN, then started googling.
From left, the law enforcement officials in the photo are:
Sheriff Tony Childress of Livingston County, Illinois
Dennis Slocumb, executive director of the International Union of Police Associations
Chief Steven Casstevens, president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police
Sheriff Tom Hodgson of Bristol County, Massachusetts
Sheriff Mark Cage of Eddy County, New Mexico
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, president of the Florida Sheriffs Association
Larry Cosme, president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association
Pat Yoes, president of Fraternal Order of Police
So I find myself at the edge of a rabbit hole. Beyond names and stations, who are these people? I assume they are there for something more than optics, that there is an expectation of an exchange of influence or power. What else do they hope to gain? Who paid their way to Washington? What are they getting for their applause? A night in a suite at the J. W. Marriott and a hefty per diem? Anything more?
And further, what does Trump expect to gain?
We are exposed to images like this all the time, to the extent that they are normal, and normalizing. For some reason this one has caught my interest, and I want to study it and think about it a bit more critically. I want to understand the symbolic value of the photo and the reasons these men were selected for it. In the context of widespread demand for a change in policing in America, what are these people expected to bring to the conservative and reactionary counter-argument?

A half-century after its premiere, Melvin Van Peebles’s musical “Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death” is heading back to Broadway.
The producer Lia Vollack said Tuesday that she is putting together a revival with the collaboration of the creator’s son, Mario Van Peebles, and under the direction of Kenny Leon. Vollack said she expects to present the revival on Broadway next year.
The musical, which began a nine-month run on Broadway in 1971, is constructed as a series of monologues, often vivid and confrontational, about Black life in a low-income neighborhood. Nominated for seven Tony Awards (but winning none), the show seems to anticipate both the confessional and personal style of musicals that followed, and the poetic spoken-word sounds of rap and hip-hop.
Melvin Van Peebles wrote the show’s book, music and lyrics. Bill Duke and Garrett Morris were in the original cast, and Phylicia Rashad was a standby.
Leon has long been enamored of the musical, which he performed in while a student at Clark Atlanta University.
“It was so visceral, and so strong, and so powerful,” he said. “It gives voice to people who we normally don’t hear on a Broadway stage, and if we do hear them, we don’t hear their truth, we just hear their suffering.”
Leon said the renewed focus on diversity and equity following a series of deaths of Black Americans in encounters with police catalyzed the production.
“Right after everything that happened last year, I talked with Lia, and she said, ‘What do you want to do?’” Leon recalled. “I said, ‘I would love to do “Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death” — I think it’s my life’s calling to do that play,’ and she said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
Leon said the challenge facing his production would be “How do you marry the ’70s to the post-George Floyd moment in an artistic way?” He added, “Nothing about it is going to feel like a museum piece. My goal is to make the audience feel as if the play is new.”
Perhaps best known as a film director, Melvin Van Peebles also wrote plays, novels, music and journalism. Mario Van Peebles, an actor who is being billed as the revival’s creative producer, said in an interview that he considers the musical (which he saw on Broadway when he was 14) his father’s best work.
“It was a transformational experience — I saw people of all colors coming in, some who had never been to a theater before, and many who had, and some laughed, and some cried, and some applauded, but everyone was somehow changed,” he said.
Mario Van Peebles said that throughout his life, people have told him that “Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death” was ahead of its time, and that he has been eager to revive it while his father, who is now 88, is still alive.
“Americans now have better tools to understand each other than we did before,” he said. “In a way, America has caught up, and the language and the tools that were once inner-city are now part of our culture.”
The New York Times, for one, gave the original production a mixed review.
“Whites can only treat ‘Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death’ as a journey to a foreign country,” the critic Clive Barnes wrote, “and on those terms I think it has the power to shock and excite.” (The paper summed up the show this way in a sub-headline: “Blacks Move Through Gantlet of the Slum.”)
The show has occasionally been revisited over the years; in New York, there was an Off Broadway production in 2006, when a New York Times critic wrote, “the series of vignettes explodes like a round of mini-riots.”
With racial equity much discussed in the theater industry recently, “Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death” becomes the seventh new production with a Black writer announced for Broadway when it reopens.
The others are a revival of “Trouble in Mind” by Alice Childress; a Michael Jackson biomusical called “MJ” with a book by Lynn Nottage; and the plays “Lackawanna Blues” by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, “Skeleton Crew” by Dominique Morisseau, and “Thoughts of a Colored Man” by Keenan Scott II, as well as an untitled play by Nottage.
Denzel Washington has told The Daily Mail that he expects a revival of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” to reach Broadway next year featuring his son John David Washington alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Brooks and directed by LaTanya Richardson Jackson. The producer Scott Rudin, who has the stage rights to “The Piano Lesson,” has declined to confirm the report.

and countless of hundreds of others have lost their lives to systemic racism and police brutality in the united states. THIS MUST END. “normal” shouldn’t be citizens afraid of those charged to protect them. “normal” shouldn’t be weapons banned in wars used on peaceful civilians. “normal” shouldn’t include the continued abuse of those who are treated as less than by the system. WE HAVE THE POWER TO INACT CHANGE. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AGAINST RACISM AND POLICE BRUTALITY.

I'm so fucking angry
I'm 16, so I can't vote
I'm living in my parents' house, so I can't go out and protest
I have signed so many petitions, but I still feel like I should be doing more
I just learned about the steps to fascism in school, and I see the signs
I can't tell my parents this is happening because it's "fake news"
My healthcare rights as a trans person just got taken away, but "just stop being trans it won't affect you"
I want to take a bigger stand on social issues happening, but I can't
The only fucking things I can do is try and help save the fucking bees, because that's not a matter of human rights so for some fucking reason I'm allowed to talk about it without getting yelled at
https://blacklivesmatter.com/petitions/
So go and sign some of those petitions maybe?
I'm so fucking sorry to everyone that has to deal with this first hand, but I know that the most important thing for me right now is staying alive so I can help make more changes later

Content warnings: police violence, racial violence, victims of hate crimes, white supremacy, and police violence.
Read by: Shariba Rivers, Pat King, Alexander Danner, Ryan Schile, Bilal Dardai, Duo Yang, Eli McIlveen, Amelia Bethel, Joshua K. Harris, Michael Turrentine, Kathleen Hoil, Marsha Harman, Ele Matelan, Jeffrey Nils Gardner, and Eleanor Hyde.
Transcript below the cut.
Today is Wednesday, June 10, 2020. There will not be a new episode of Unwell today. Following the example and the words of Black Lives Matter Chicago, we call for an end to the state violence against and criminalization of Black communities through police forces, an unjust legal system, and federal, state, and local political organizations.
As the artists of HartLife NFP, we call on our fellow art makers in positions of institutional power and privilege to take concrete actions to make your institutions and artistic work explicitly and actively anti-racist.
We affirm our commitment to do the same here. We will interrogate ourselves when we have fallen short of this goal and recommit to do better every time.
The United States is a country founded on land stolen from indigenous peoples, built with the stolen labor and lives of enslaved Black people. We call especially on White listeners to reckon with this fact, today and every day.
The following list is both incomplete and horrifyingly long. These people were victims of hate crimes, police officers and of an unjust, white supremacist system.
We say their names and we remember their lives.
