By Adam Elder
(BBC Sport) — On a Saturday evening in February 1990, many of the United States' finest footballers stepped on to A&M Studios' historic soundstage in Los Angeles.
A month before John Barnes would implore his England team-mates to "hold and give, but do it at the right time" in a studio in Berkshire, the United States team recorded their own rap - one they hoped would make the sport famous at home.
In a moment, some of Hollywood's biggest celebrities would walk through the door to join them.
The plan was to record a novelty music video for a star-studded jock jam called Victory. The track celebrated the United States' first trip to the World Cup in 40 years, long before any of these players were born.
Never mind fame, though. In 1990, making football a little less hated in the United States would have counted as a runaway success.
Americans mostly considered football a fringe concern - if they even considered it at all. Baseball, American football and basketball were the "real" American sports.
For most of the 20th century, football in the States was for "the others", to put it politely: expats, cab drivers, dishwashers, exchange students, leftists, intellectuals, Euro snobs and the like.
Still the US Soccer Federation was constantly thinking about how to grow the game.
Werner Fricker, the federation's stern but visionary president, had cannily realised Fifa's desire to wring American dollars out of the world's most popular sport. By 1988, he had guided the United States to victory over Brazil and Morocco to win the right to stage the 1994 World Cup.
But Fricker knew a World Cup in the States faced scepticism. He wanted to prove the hosts had a team good enough to qualify on merit.
He put up his own money to fund a push to qualify for the 1990 event. If the United States succeeded it would be the first time they had made the World Cup since Brazil 1950, where they earned their place via a second-place finish in a three-team pool.
"Werner refused to accept that qualification wasn't doable," said Kevin Payne, former director of marketing and national administrator for the Federation. "He knew what needed to be done, and that past attempts were amateurish."
Fricker made Bob Gansler the team's first full-time coach. A tough yet erudite German-Hungarian immigrant, Gansler's knowledge of American youth football ran deep.
The team picked by Gansler, many fresh out of college, had been raised during the North American Soccer League's Pele-led glory days and were a clean slate from past failures to reach the World Cup.
They had chips on their shoulders for all sorts of other reasons though.
Many of them were second-generation immigrants, their parents and family lives different from an 'apple pie' American ideal. They loved a sport that many around them reviled and yet there was no nationwide outdoor league for them to play in.

Console Sports Games of 1993 - Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer
Released in 1993 on the SNES, Tony Meola's Soccer is a sports game based around football (soccer) the game in the US used at the time United States national team goalkeeper Tony Meola's likeness on the cover otherwise this is an unlicenced football game with international teams as well as domestic teams such as Miami, Sacramento, St Louis, Boston, Milan, Rome and Liverpool.
The Japanese release of the game does not use Meola's likeness on the cover instead opting for Japanese national team player Ruy Ramos, with the game titled Ramos' World Wide Soccer or Ruy Ramos no World Wide Soccer. The Brazilian version of the game would do away with a named title opting for just Super Copa.

Tony Bennett Dead at 96
- “Tony, because of you we have your songs in our heart forever,” family says
Tony Bennett has died at 96.
The crooner died July 21, his family said.
“Tony left us today but he was still singing the other day at his piano and his last song was, ‘Because of You,’ his first No. 1 hit,” Bennett’s family said in a statement.
“Tony, because of you we have your songs in our heart forever.”
No cause of death was given.
“The best of the best,” Stevie Van Zandt said in eulogizing Bennett. “The last of the legends. A man whose heart was as big as his voice.”
Bennett’s hit-making career stretched across decades and centuries from 1951’s “Because of You” to 2021’s Love for Sale album, a joint with Lady Gaga.
“What a legacy of not only superb, timeless music, but a class-act study in cool, grace and elegance,” Keith Urban said of the singer.
Bennett’s career earned him a genre-spanning legion of fans from Foghat, “what a legendary voice and great human being;” to Sawyer Brown, “there are legends … and then there’s Tony Bennett;” to Al Di Meola, “the most beautiful voice of our lives, our loves and our heartaches;” to Brian Wilson who is “thinkin’ of Tony Bennett” on the day of his death.
In 2012, Bennett performed “the greatest gig I had ever witnessed,” guitarist Joe Bonamassa said in a statement.
“It was like dropping a needle on a record,” he said. “He was the last of the greatest generation of singers and musicians.”
Bennett said in 2021 he had Alzheimer’s disease. He played his final show with Gaga in August of that year.
“That’s how you do it,” Vernon Reid said of Bennett’s “life as lyric.
“Music and art fully realized. So hip. So real. So alive as long as he lived. Before orchestras. Before trios. Before the blank canvas. G.O.A.T. with few peers.”

2. A band I always come back to.
I think this is gonna sound cringe, but one of the first bands to get me into metal was a Christian glam metal group called Stryper. While their lyrics are overtly Christian and prosletizing, their musicianship is incredible and I have yet to find a dual-guitarist lineup I like better. Their early stuff in the 80s is like a mixture of glam and power/speed, and their more recent stuff after getting back together in the 2010s gives me a lot of Judas Priest vibes, lots of classic heavy metal with touches of power metal.
10. Most underrated musician.
I could list many musicians here. Some of them are actually quite popular within their own circles, but in terms of the general population they may not have a large following. First is Django Reinhardt, a Belgian/French Romani guitarist who effectively created the jazz manouche style (sometimes called g*psy jazz), and accomplished this with only two functioning fingers on his left hand due to severe burns. He also influenced the likes of Tony Iommi, Jerry Garcia, and Eddie Van Halen. Second is Paco de Lucia, a Spanish/Portuguese flamenco guitarist who branched into jazz and made "new flamenco" a world fusion style of flamenco and jazz. His works with jazz fusion guitar legends like Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin are some of my favourite pieces of music ever. Third is Buckethead. The man just hangs out and releases like 20 albums a year, almost all of them instrumentals. There are some other artists and groups like Leah McHenry (who goes by LEAH), Eye of Melian, dArtagnan, Steeleye Span, Imperial Age, Lords of the Trident, Sunburst, Blazon Stone, Númenor, Fire Whale, Grimgotts, Daniel Amos, Fief, Ziggurath, Crazy Lixx, Bloodywood, Crown Lands, Haralabos Stafylakis, T. Patrick Carrabre, Harmonium, Auri, Wilderun, Vials of Wrath, Karen Sunabacka, Oceans of Slumber, Signum Regis, and Paul O'Dette. (Sorry about the lengthy list. Also this covers metal, rock, classical, jazz, folk, and more)
30. A song from your favourite band.

Jeff Beck Dead at 78
- “Jeff could channel music from the ethereal,” Jimmy Page says
Guitarist Jeff Beck is dead at 78.
The former Yardbird who went on to forge a career steeped in blues, fusion jazz and rock died Jan. 10 “after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis,” his family said in a statement.
“His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss,” they said.
Beck’s former Yardbirds bandmate Jimmy Page mourned the man he called the “six-stringed warrior.”
Beck’s playing cast a “spell he could weave around our mortal emotions,” Page said.
“Jeff could channel music from the ethereal,” Page added. “His technique (was) unique. His imaginations apparently limitless.”
From the Yardbirds to the Jeff Beck Group, solo and in various collaborations, Beck’s recorded legacy spans 1966-2022. His impact on fellow players is deeper.
Former JBG band members Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood credited Beck with starting their careers. Beck, Stewart said, “was on another planet.”
“He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond,” the singer said. “Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything.”
Said Wood: “I want to thank him for all our early days together in Jeff Beck Group, conquering America.”
Beck’s death death reverberated through the music community, his fellow musicians giving testament to his influence.
“I feel sick,” Adrian Belew said.
David Gilmour called Beck “my hero;” Tony Iommi praised him as an “outstanding, iconic, genius guitar player;” and Dave Davies eulogized Beck as “a good friend and a great guitar player.”
“He made the electric guitar sing,” Steve Hackett said. “A powerful influence on myself and many others.”
Al Di Meola said he grew up on the Truth and Beck-Ola albums and recalled seeing Beck in concert in London.
“There was no one like Jeff,” Di Meola said. “He had the most unique style - in a very prestigious category.”

Qatar World Cup: USMNT Football World Cup Qualifying Series history El Salvador away
All through the U.S. Men's National Team's FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifying venture, ussoccer.com will take fans back through charming experiences the USMNT has recently experienced against every one of its passing rivals in the situation that the group will confront them. We start things off by taking a gander at a portion of the past experiences in El Salvador.
Fans from all over the world are called to book Football world Cup tickets from our online platforms WorldWideTicketsandHospitality.com. Football World Cup fans can book USA Football World Cup Tickets on our website at exclusively discounted prices.
Tumblr media
While the USMNT hasn't confronted Los Cuscatlecos too often in FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying, there have been a couple of intriguing away showdowns. For the greatest, the USA is undefeated against El Salvador in four qualifiers (2-0-2) detained in Central America (1989, 1997, 2004, and 2009). Here is a brief glance at three of those experiences.
USA 1, EL SALVADOR 0 - SEPTEMBER 17, 1989
There was such a lot of incongruity to this game for Hugo Perez, who scored the solitary objective in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Indeed, that is no error; Tegucigalpa, Honduras. While counting double in a 4-2 Olympic qualifying victory in San Salvador on Oct. 18, 1987, Perez was sufficiently booed by the group in his local country. Brought into the world in Morazán, El Salvador, Perez, and his family moved to the USA when he was nine.
He needed to stand by for nearly 12 months to get his payback, despite the fact that there were a few snags. On a full-scale level, the objective and result impelled the USA to its first Football World Cup billet in quite a while. On an individual level, the objective made Perez the principal USMNT player to score against the nation of his introduction to the world. His 78-year-old granddad Antonio made a seven-hour drive from El Salvador to see everything face to face. For more to know about Football World Cup Tickets Click here
Tumblr media
I've been searching for that objective for quite a long time, Perez said following the match. I needed to play well [for my grandfather]. Just getting this game played was troublesome enough. The match initially was planned for San Salvador on July 9 however was delayed endlessly as FIFA searched for an unbiased site after uncontrollable fans ended a previous passing match against Costa Rica in the melting away minutes.
Tegucigalpa was chosen as the scene, albeit the Americans needed to conquer one odd episode on game day. Goalkeeper Tony Meola, 20, who was to turn into the second most youthful goalkeeper to perform for the USA in a Football World Cup qualifier, gotten back from a group meeting hours before the opening shot.
USA 2, El Salvador 2 March 28, 2009
Confronted with a two-objective deficiency entering the last 15 minutes, the USMNT pulled off a noteworthy two-objective assembly behind Jozy Altidore and Frankie Hejduk that calmed a riotous horde of 30,500 at Estadio Cuscatlan. The hosts snatched a fifteenth moment lead on Eliseo Quintanilla's objective, exploiting a giveaway by DaMarcus Beasley. For more to know about Football World Cup Tickets Click here
Tumblr media
Quintanilla took a permit from Israel Romero and tired goalkeeper Brad Guzan as he slid the ball inside the far post. Guzan began instead of ordinary Tim Howard, who was serving a yellow-card suspension. Things looked bleak for the USA in the 72nd moment as Rodolfo Zelaya moved past Beasley on the wing and crossed the ball to Castillo at the highest point of the punishment region. Cristian Castillo then, at that point headed the ball in on one ricochet for a two-objective benefit.
Electrified, Bob Bradley's side proceeded to pull off one of the group's most noteworthy away revitalizes. Altidore, who came on in the 61st moment, scored on a header from three yards out off a Hejduk cross past reinforcement goalkeeper Juan Jose Gomez in the 77th moment. Gomez had supplanted harmed starter Miguel Montes minutes sooner.
USA 2, EL SALVADOR 0 - OCTOBER 9, 2004
What an introduction for Eddie Johnson, who scored the protection objective four minutes into his first USMNT appearance to assist with getting a 2-0 Semifinal Round Football World Cup Qualifying triumph before 20,000 onlookers at Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador. It took a veteran forward Brian McBride to place the Americans on the scoreboard in the 29th moment.
Tumblr media
DaMarcus Beasley's toss-in on the passed-on side to Kerry Zavagnin began the scoring succession in the assaulting third. Zavagnin discovered McBride, who penetrated a hard shot into the right half of the net. It was McBride's 26th global objective and seventh in six matches against El Salvador – the majority of any USMNT player. For more to know about Football World Cup Tickets Click here
We realized we needed to come out and score ahead of schedule against them, said McBride, who is the current USMNT General Manager. The objective removed the excited Salvadoran group from the match. Johnson, who had supplanted McBride in the 71st moment, put the nail in the notorious final resting place four minutes after the fact as he tapped home a Landon Donovan feed for a two-objective edge.
Johnson turned into the seventh USMNT player – and first since Miro Rys in 1976 – to make a big appearance in a Football World Cup qualifier and score an objective. No player has accomplished the accomplishment since. We played hard, and we played well, U.S. lead trainer Bruce Arena said.
Tumblr media
This was a vital game for us, and it implies that we've gone three street games without a misfortune. That is an achievement. We were considerably stronger in the subsequent half. Clearly, I figure we might have gotten more objectives. You don't dominate that many matches out and about in Football World Cup qualifying, so I can't say anything negative.

I think Tony Meola is the right level of color commentator for World Cup matches. He’s not filling us in on information about how players play for their pro clubs. He’s just commenting on what’s actually happening in the match, sharing technical information in a quick, basic way. He’s not terribly wonkish, nor does he keep describing everything in terms of emotion like some other commentators have been.

Tony Meola said “We’ve already seen Portugal and Spain yesterday, we’ll soon see West Germany, oh I’m sorry, Germany soon.”
The whole team is so B-list. The commentary is unbearable. Their team-specific correspondents are people I’ve never heard of, and I consume an awful lot of football media. I gave them three days to do better than their crap Bundesliga and UCL coverage and they managed to underperform even those broadcasts, so tomorrow I revert to muting the TV and streaming the world feed for audio. I can’t stand watching football with their American commentators. It absolutely ruins it.
