Traditional Arts and Crafts: Discover Turkey's rich tradition of arts and crafts, from intricately woven carpets and hand-painted ceramics to exquisite calligraphy and marbling. Explore the workshops and markets of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar and the artisans' villages of Cappadocia to witness master craftsmen at work and purchase unique souvenirs to commemorate your journey.
Hospitality and Warmth: Experience the legendary hospitality of the Turkish people as you journey through the country. From the welcoming smiles of shopkeepers in the bazaars to the gracious hosts of family-run guesthouses, you'll be greeted with warmth and kindness at every turn, making you feel right at home in this captivating land.
Practical Tips for Travelers
Visa and Entry Requirements: Check visa requirements for your nationality and ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months' validity from the date of entry into Turkey. Depending on your country of origin, you may be eligible for an e-Visa or visa on arrival.
Health and Safety: Take necessary precautions to safeguard your health while traveling in Turkey. Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and adhere to local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations. It's also advisable to purchase travel insurance to cover any unforeseen emergencies or medical expenses.
Currency and Language: The official currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TRY), although euros and US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Turkish is the official language, but English is spoken and understood in most tourist destinations, making it easy to communicate with locals and navigate your way around the country.
Respect for Culture and Customs: Respect the cultural norms and customs of Turkey, particularly when visiting religious sites and conservative areas. Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering mosques, and refrain from public displays of affection.
Conclusion
From the bustling streets of Istanbul to the tranquil landscapes of Cappadocia, Turkey offers a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered. With Heart Rock Adventures as your trusted tour guide, you'll embark on a journey of exploration and enlightenment, unraveling the mysteries of this captivating destination one step at a time. We arrived at 1a to our hotel, in the rain. It is a room in a cave which is cool. But we didn’t spend much time enjoying the room, as we were tired and also knew we would need to wake up at 7:30a the next day.
Our guide and taxi driver (two separate people) met us at 9a at the hotel. Due to Gokay’s dad being famous in the tourism industry here, somehow his mom and dad convinced the dean of the local tourism school to have one of the grad students give us a two-day personal tour of the area.
He was very knowledgeable, speaks both Turkish and English, and was all around a lovely 30-year-old who’s getting married in 24 days! Had to share his “meet-cute.” His fiancé was on one of his tours, they connected on social media because he thought she was cute. After 2 years of conversing on social media, he asked her on a date… they live 12 hours (driving) apart from each other!
Luckily, it was cloudy but not raining this morning. So, we started at Devrent, a rock formation on the side of the road, which the guide called “imagination valley” because you can see a variety of shapes (e.g. camel and Virgin Mary) in the rock formations aka “fairy chimneys.”
Tumblr media
Then we went to two sites, Zelve and Pasabaglari which were both government protected, so we paid to get in. But they were incredible! This area was covered in ash by 3 volcanoes at least 9 million years ago, which created this easy to carve, sandstone. Hence the cave hotels, and also these amazing sites of formations formed by air, water and change in temperature as well as caves dug into the rocks. If you’ve ever been to the indigenous sites near Sedona, it’s similar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that we went to a local pottery workshop (Alaaddin), where learned about the pottery of the region and the two types of clay they use. First red terracotta, from the river bottom. And the second was a white clay they mixed with quartz to make it strong. We got to try using their foot powered pottery wheel, with a pottery master, to make terracotta bowls. This was Gokay’s first time doing pottery!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We took a nice walk down the river walk, and then headed to lunch, at an old “kervansaray” (Caravan Palace for the music fans out there). An old inn to bring animals to and stay as a stop during a long journey. We had a fixed menu of soup, borek/appetizers, an entre with meat and rice, and then a fruit dessert. Can’t forget to mention the local wine. Due to the ash this region is great for growing wine grapes.
Tumblr media
During lunch it started pouring but somehow the rest of the afternoon we were lucky because we were inside or in caves while it was raining and walking outside when it wasn’t.
Tumblr media
We spent the afternoon seeing more caves and rock formations. We saw an old church built into a hill side with old frescos. This church was not government protected, so it was not in great shape. It was under someone’s current cave house that was also a cafe we had tea at as it poured rain.
Tumblr media
Next we saw the famous “love valley” which has the most phalic shaped fairy chimneys. It was amazing because it cleared up enough for us to see one of the younger volcanoes of the region covered in snow.
We finished our day at Ortahisar looking out on the large fairy chimney has previously been a castle, because it’s so easily guarded. Sadly, a lot of it has collapsed.
Tumblr media
We needed a nap at the end of this long day, but we went out to the local town of Urgup near our hotel and had a local dinner at “Cappadocia restaurant.” It was recommended by the guide and it was yummy.
We were going to do a balloon ride early tomorrow but with the possible rain, it got moved to Wednesday morning, so we have a chill night and tomorrow morning before we go around again.

You have been tossing and turning for what felt like hours. The gargantuan man that slept beside you has been knocked out, as he has been for hours. You envied him now more than ever. It had been a long day, many things went sour, many people were disappointed, you were exhausted. But every position you shifted into wasn’t right, the sheets were too hot no matter where your feet spread to, and the itch in your back couldn’t be scratched because it was in the exact middle of your back and you couldn’t even wake up Konig to reach it because that would be mean. Everything was uncomfortable, and no matter how many times you tossed and turned, it wouldn’t rest your mind and body. So, you give up.
You quietly slip out of the bed as to not wake him up. You successfully make it up and out of bed, on your way to your shared kitchen to make a cup of tea, hopefully that would soothe your body. Chamomile and vanilla tea with a hint of milk and honey. Konig’s favorite. Once the cup of tea was ready, you decided to make a turkey sandwich, because it was the middle of the night and why not? Your midnight snack was finally finished.
Your tired body found home on your humongous couch, courtesy of your humongous boyfriend. You started to flick through the channels on your TV, settling on some cheesy romance movie that you normally make fun of. Sometimes the monotonous voices of these crappy actors have the capability to bore you to sleep, why not try that now?
“Why did you leave me.” A voice whispers out, right next to your ear.
“Holy shit! Ko, you just scared the fuck out of me.” You gasp.
“Sorry.” He says, sheepishly.
“Why are you up? You were asleep 10 minutes ago.”
“I got cold, and lonely.” He confesses, which made your heart melt. He was very much like that. He was a tough guy, through and through, but when it comes to you, he’s a marshmallow, sweeter than pie and such a sensitive guy.
“I’m sorry baby, I couldn’t sleep so I came out here to make a cup of tea.”
“And a sandwich.” He adds.
“Yes. I’ll be back in a few minutes, just trying to relax a bit.” You say.
“I will wait with you, until you are finished with your tea.” He yawns.
“Ko, you are tired please go to bed I’ll be in there in just a moment.”
He says nothing, he just sits next to you on the couch, watching the movie you put on. Stretching, he puts an arm over you, just like they do in those stupid movies. His presence is calming, almost enough to make you want to sleep, almost. He’s thumb rubs even circles on your shoulder, attempting to guide tour body to a place of peace. You finish your tea, and place it on your coaster in the coffee table. He turns to you, hooking his arm under your legs, the other under your shoulders, bridal style. He moves towards your shared room.
He places you on the bed gently, and maneuvers you to lay on your stomach. He crawls in to bed next to you, and begins rubbing firm, but soft circles on your back. The actions immediately lull you into a place of calm. You let out a sigh of relief.
“Thank you,” you say, “love you.”
“I love you.” He repeats.
The rubbing of your back is what finally puts you into a well deserved sleep.

You learn so much about your friends while shooting the shit around a campfire together...
Apparently, when my pal Dan lived in New Jersey, he drove an ice cream truck. For the mafia. For context: If anyone else told that tale, I’d immediately call bullshit. But Dan’s a really straightforward, guy -- and he’s lived a pretty interesting life in general, including a stint as a wilderness tour guide in Alaska.
Incidentally, he also looks like the perfect ice cream man man: he has this eye-wrinkling smile and cheery red cheeks, and you can absolutely picture him wearing a paper hat at a jaunty angle.
That this company was run by the mafia wasn’t explicit, but was pretty obvious. His boss had the most Italian-ass first name -- “He wasn’t interested in telling me his last name, and I don’t know if he knew mine,” Dan said -- and was the only one allowed in the large freezer trailer where the inventory was stored. Dan said he assumed there were bodies in there.
Said truck was stored in the middle of a junkyard, which was guarded by Rottweilers at night. If you happened to still be in there when they were released, you'd have to climb on top of your truck and play "the floor is lava and the lava is angry dogs" til you got to the building that fronted the road.
The other two main factions were the Saudi Arabians and a single large Greek woman. "She was mean enough to hold her own," Dan said.
These factions had divvied up the local parks and ball fields and so on, which Dan learned the hard way. "But nobody owned the streets."
IHOP was neutral territory. If you parked your truck there, it signaled to the other factions that you wanted to parlay.
Once, near the time school got out, Dan was plying his trade toward the end of a long cul-de-sac -- the signature bells of his company playing over the PA system -- when he heard “Turkey in the Straw” getting closer. One of the Saudis turned onto the cul-de-sac, heading slowly towards him. To escape, he’d have to drive right past him.
And then, as he was getting ready to gun it: “Do your ears hang low” approached. It was the Greek lady, turning into the same cul-de-sac. Suddenly he was in a three-way stand-off.
And then, to top it all off, the school bus pulled in and began unloading kids.
As Dan watched in horror, the Greek lady parked her truck and, marched over to the Saudi guy’s truck, cursing loudly.
And then -- before the horrified eyes of the children, in the din of competing ice cream truck speaker systems -- she REACHED into his open window, pulled him halfway through it by his hair with one hand, and started pummeling him with the other.
Dan beat a hasty retreat. He later heard through the ice cream man grapevine that the cops were called and the Greek lady ended up being sent back to Greece.

How MK can be Latino and Jewish: A Guide for Fanfic Writers and RPs
Thank you to @fdelopera for help me with this post
This is my headcanon (the canon in the Usaigi Fanfic Universe) and you're welcome to adapt it for your own works of fiction. Of course, this is not the only explanation and you are free to headcanon however you’d like* ** This is a long post but please read and reblog.
*as long as you’re NOT perpetrating antisemitic and/or racist rhetoric
**if you do use mine I'll be over the moon and would love to read it. Also credit is nice
In honor of Oscar Isaac’s actual ethnicity(Guatemalan-Cuban) and to stay semi-realistic to actual history, in my hc Elias’s family is mostly Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewish from Cuba who left Cuba during the Cuban revolution. Wendy’s family is Ladino(a term in Guatemala for someone who is multiracial with a mix of indigenous and European ancestry. Mestizo in other countries) with Mayan and converso (Sephardic/Crypto) ancestry. Oscar Isaac, in real life, is also Crypto-Jewish (literally, “Hidden-Jewish”) on his father’s side, making him Patrilineal Jewish by descent. His father’s family are descended from Converso Jews who were evicted from Spain in the 1500s.
Nitpicking Other Fandom Explanations/HCs
I’ve read some fanfics where Wendy is Latina and Elias a non-Latino jew. I personally prefer my explanation because the actor who plays Elias is also Latino. And, (to me) having Wendy be the Latina convert and Elias the (American) Jew plays into the idea that people from Latin America can’t be Jewish, so I personally don’t vibe with that headcanon.
Both before and during WWII, there was a wave of Jewish refugees who sought asylum in Latin America. I’ve seen other fans suggest that the Spectors could be the descent of these refugees who settled in Argentinian (or another South American country that took in refugees) because “Spector” is an Ashkenazi last name and proceed to imply that they would not be “Latino” by blood.
Firstly, I’d like to point out that there is no such thing as being “Latino by blood.” In the same sense that you cannot be Canadian or American by blood. First Nations and Native Americans are the only ones able to make that claim but their history and culture existed before the land was called Canada or America. They are Inuit/Navajo/etc by blood, not really Canadian/American by blood. It’s a European idea. “Latino” similarly, is a European word used to describe an ethnicity; it is not a race. (x) So even if the Spectors left Poland/Russia/Europe in 1930s, settled in Argentina, and some generations later MK was born, MK would still be Latino.
Secondly, while you don’t need to follow my headcanon, if you choose to make Elias 100% ethnically European Jewish(white), I would still encourage you to make Wendy indigenous/multiracial. By making both sides of the family descendants of Jewish refugees from Europe, you’re whitewashing MK. Oscar Isaac is a POC actor, let his character also be POC. Don’t just make the character Latino, let them be brown.
ok back to me~
On Elias
“The majority of Cuban Jews are descended from European Jews who immigrated in the early 20th century. More than 24,000 Jews lived in Cuba in 1924, and still more immigrated to the country in the 1930s. Following the 1959 communist revolution, 94% of the country's Jews emigrated, most of them to the United States.” (x)
For Elias and his side of the family, him being Cuban makes sense. He could be the descendant of those who left Spain, Turkey, and Eastern Europe due to persecution and intermarried with non-Jewish Tainos/mestizos. Elias would still be Jewish but also have some indigenous ancestry as well. If Elias was in his 20s when he had Marc, his family could have left Cuba in 1959 along with most other Jews and resettled in the States.
Further reading on Jewish Cubans: https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/cuba-virtual-jewish-history-tour
On Wendy
In my head, Wendy is Ladino with Mayan, European, and conversa(Jews forced to convert to Catholicism) ancestry.
Assuming that Wendy was also in her 20s when she had Marc, she’d have been born and lived through the Guatemalan Civil War/Genocide (1960-1996). For context, with the support of the United States government, the Guatemalan government committed genocide against the Mayan population as well as widespread human rights violations against civilians. Wendy could have immigrated to the US when she was a teenager like many Latine children did (and still do) in order to escape the violence and war. Then, she could have converted back to Judaism, married Elias, then proceed to have Marc and Randall.
How would the MK System be considered Jewish if Wendy were not raised Jewish, and converted in adulthood?
(by fdelopera)
Most major Jewish denominations in the US will recognize a child as Jewish if the mother converts before marriage. These denominations include Reform (Ashkenazi denomination from Germany), Conservative (Ashkenazi denomination from Russia), and Reconstructionist (Ashkenazi denomination from the United States).
Nowadays, some Orthodox congregations also allow women to convert who weren't raised Jewish, and consider the children to be Jewish, so long as the conversion takes place prior to marriage. (Ultra-Orthodox congregations are still strict about this.)
However, in the 1980s when MK was born, this was not normally the case. In Orthodox communities, it would be unlikely for children to be considered Jewish if the mother was not born Jewish, and there was much less awareness of Crypto-Jewish people from Latam.
There is a "relatively" large Latine Jewish population in Chicago (relative to other Midwestern cities, at least), and because of this, there are several Sephardic synagogues in the Chicago area. The Spectors might have considered joining one of these synagogues as a family. Perhaps Elias grew up in one. However, Sephardic synagogues tend to be nondenominational Orthodox, and as such, they would have been more strict about conversion. It is possible that they would have prevented Wendy from converting, and they might have gatekept Marc and Roro from their Judaism.
Wendy might have decided to convert Reform, since a Reform congregation would recognize her Jewish heritage, and therefore her conversion process would be much easier. Elias might have left his childhood synagogue and followed Wendy to a Reform Temple. (In the show, the Spectors are coded as Reform Jewish, and so this HC works.)
However, Reform congregations were not as used to Latino members in the 1980s and 90s, and so the Spectors would likely have encountered racism in these communities, even though the Reform congregations would have recognized Wendy as Jewish, and made it relatively easy for her to convert.
So, the family would have experienced possibly less racism in Sephardic synagogues in Chicago, but Wendy might not have been welcomed. They would have been accepted as Jews in the Reform Temples in Chicago, but they likely would have experienced racism.
So, it's another instance of the family being outsiders in their own communities, further marginalizing them. And by extension, marginalizing the MK System and making it difficult for them to participate in both Jewish and Latine communities.
What does this mean for MK system (and by extension Randall)?
The Spectors would likely have been the black sheep in their community.
Not really fitting in with the Jewish community (since they’re Latino) and not really fitting in with the Latino community (since they’re Jewish). They are Jewish, they are Latino, but not in “the right way.” While I feel like this is important to keep in mind, I would suggest not writing about this particular subject (“gatekeeping”/racism in the Jewish community) unless you are a member of these communities AND you have done your research. By making an auntie in your fic say something racist, you may be contributing to the idea that Jews are racist which could harm them in real life. By making a tia say something anti-Semitic, it could do the same. Even if you're writing angst/drama, I think I’m not the only POC who will say that reading stories about racism isn’t super fun. MK has a shit ton of trauma that you can explore without unintentionally saying negative things about communities you are not a part of.
But can I write cultural trauma I have a Jewish/Latine beta reader?
Don’t ask Jewish/Latine people to read a fic about our cultural trauma. It’s rude, it’s insensitive, it could be triggering. It’s not POC/Jewish people’s job to tell you when you being offensive.
I think it’s fine to talk about how they feel like they don’t fit in, but please don’t make your Jewish characters/Latine characters be racist/antisemitic.
2. Intergenerational Trauma
At this point, I’m starting to believe it’s impossible to be Indigenous/POC or Jewish (or Autistic) without trauma. All these groups have been victims of hate crime, genocide, and discrimination for most of human history. If Elias’s parents escape a war, that could have affected him. If Wendy lived through war, that most certainly would have affected her. If neither got help, support, or healthy coping skills, that would affect Marc and Randall. This is intergenerational trauma. This is why it’s a cycle.
Bonus: This is all great, all power and blessed Usaigi, but do I need to talk about all of this in my fanfic?
No, of course not. This is all just for backstory you may want to keep in mind if it’s relevant to your story. If your fic is a fluff piece about Marc and Steven going to the park, totally not relevant. If your fic is a flashback of when the system was younger, may be relevant.
