I feel as though the crew needed to read on dictatorship and colonialism so they can better portray them in the show I feels as thought it a tell don’t show type of phenomena, the isles became a utopia when Belos is gone and no one was upset their ruler was missing, the rebels didn’t provide evidence that Belos was planning a Genocide, and Philip was able to one-handily conquer the isles with the guise of wild magic being dangerous because why?
A lot of different stories have trouble portraying the power struggle and difficulties that arise as a result of a strong government with tight control of the people being removed.
In Avatar the Last Airbender, they did an incredible job of portraying the loss of culture and distinct boundaries due to the colonial behavior of the Fire Nation and even the way it affected the livelihood of towns and cities under it. They didn’t have time to also depict the way that the political structure would shift to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. This has led to a feature generally referred to as “The Good Successor” or something similar. The basic premise is that there is a descendent of the big bad who assisted the heroes and will take over after the fall of the aforementioned villain, allowing for a more satisfying resolution with less worries about the future while it’s implied that changes will happen after. In the example I used, Zuko would be this character.
The Owl House….did not do this. They don’t talk about the various ways that cultural traditions and history were erased by Philip’s actions and control of the government. From what we saw of Elsewhere and Elsewhen, he didn’t need to change much, anyway. The Isles already conform to the European and Colonial behaviors imposed by most wide-spread colonial empires, so there doesn’t appear to be a great loss of information history or culture, although there were mentions on the restriction of knowledge. They don’t mention any of the ways that the dissolution of the Covens affected the Isles or even what they did to counter that. It feels unrealistic and, quite frankly, lazy. Bad things don’t just go away because the person with the most power does; actual changes need to be made.

Go ahead, Mr. President, bring it up
President Biden is slated to meet with his successor Wednesday in the Oval Office in a gesture that Donald Trump never considered when he lost to Biden in the 2020 presidential election. I know that Joe Biden is a stickler for tradition, that he reveres the process and the pageantry associated with the office he has occupied for the past four years. Consider, though, the shabby treatment he…

Democracy at Risk: How to Prevent a US President from Discrediting Elections and Seizing Power
The peaceful transfer of power is a cornerstone of democracy, and the United States has a long tradition of respecting the outcome of free and fair elections. However, in recent years, there has been concern about the possibility of a sitting US President refusing to accept the result of an election and instead claiming that the election was fraudulent. This scenario raises important questions…

a fantastic commission from @themetalhiro of my Dungeons & Devil Fruits 5e Sniper Marksman, Vinsmoke “Starfall Gunner” Beretta!
it was an absolute treat to work with you, looking forward to the next opportunity to do so!
#one piece oc#dungeons and devil fruits#themetalhiro#other people's art#let it be known that this campaign is EXTREMELY AU mostly because our captain rolled the ‘king of the pirates’ dream#and there is no chance in davy jones’s locker of the daggertooth pirates beating the straw hats in THAT competition#so the daggertooths are basically taking the role of the straw hats in this version of the setting#there’s been a lot of development over the course of the campaign that ultimately led to her being established as a vinsmoke#most of it came about from rolling the Red Raid Suit on a loot table when we were doing a piracy#and bc gunner is the only one who doesn’t have a devil fruit she took the suit#then after she attuned to it the dm remembered that they’re genelocked#so we quickly worked something together behind the scenes#and it was decided that#1. vinsmoke sora has some distant three-eyes ancestry that judge wanted to tap into#2. lineage factor experiments to reactivate the genetic predisposition for the voice of all things resulted in the growth of a third eye#(2a. the third eye is actually attached to the same part of the three-eyed lineage factor as VOAT)#(2b. she has the pointed ears as a little treat for me personally from initial character creation)#3. because of the ‘kill on sight’ order re: three-eyes vinsmoke goji was sent away to be raised away from germa kingdom#beretta was what goji’s adoptive parents renamed her to conceal her true identity and she’s gotten attached to it#4. vinsmoke ichiji isn’t sparking red anymore now he’s sonic purple and he has thunder powers#she’s also trans and spent her timeskip training montage in kama land so iva did her a solid#pre-timeskip i had her presenting as male bc it wasn’t until i had started solidifying her character that i realized estrogen would fix her#but it’s been kind of cool how much easier she’s been to rp since her transition

The current transphobic backlash of course impacts trans people most but I think assuming it's About Us or even that we're a convenient scapegoat due to being such a small proportion of the overall population is like. A big rhetorical & tactical mistake, actually.
It's about reifying gender for everyone. It's about enforcing gender essentialism. TERFs are an important part of the puzzle here because feminism has become somewhat the default position in our society & the right knows they are unlikely to convince most women out of identifying as feminists, but if you can redefine feminism to include beliefs like "women are inherently weaker than men" (and therefore cannot beat men at sports) you can recouperate feminism enough that it doesn't matter. The end result is still a society that takes it as fact that men and women are inherently biologically different and therefore must take different roles in society. It's laundering the christian complementarianism I was raised with for people who would be repulsed by tradwife shit if you presented it on its face.
The dividing line between the sexes must be rigid and impermeable to enforce this worldview in law. The existance of trans people and especially the possibility of medical transition reveal that this line isn't rigid, which then implies that cis women aren't inherently destined to be babymakers and cis men aren't inherently superior at...well, maybe anything. If you want to ban abortion and birth control and force women out of public life and insist that men are superior in all the ways that happen to correlate with men wielding power in society, you first have to drive trans people out of public existance.
I'm not like an expert at deradicalizing terfs or whatever. But I suspect that pushing back against the idea that women are inherently inferior to men in certain realms - that women are designed by god or biology to take Different But Complementary Roles than men - is going to be extremely important in the fight for both trans rights and against the recouperation of feminism.

yes, yes, boba fett finds it strange and uncomfortable when people can see his face and this is one of the major reasons he almost never removes his helmet (in the expanded universe anyway), but another factor that i think isn't explored nearly enough is just how much his helmet shapes how he sees the world. it grants him 360° vision, lets him interface with his weapon systems and slave I, and automatically dampens loud noises and dims bright lights. imagine going through the vast majority of your life seeing the world through that lens and then suddenly taking it away. removing his helmet for any significant length of time likely isn't just uncomfortable for him but downright disorienting.

i live in the midwest US, right? and something that's been so fascinating to me is the fact that i spend equal time, roughly, in urban, suburba, and rural areas- and i'm seeing the same renewables growth in all three. solar panels, advertisements for EVs, charging stations, newly installed wind turbines, actual EVs and hybrids on the roads, i've even been able to witness solar panel installations in the city. the buses in my city's fleet are more and more becoming electric or otherwise more sustainable. i see farmers with portable solar and batteries by their houses. people in the suburbs are getting solar installed and bragging about new electric vehicles.
it's becoming more and more commonplace, and it's both affordable and popular to go green. that really gives me hope, honestly. seeing people who don't really care about the environment go environmentally-friendly anyways, because it's profitable, or cool, or cheap, or just because they like it. sure, it's sort of sad, but on the other hand it shows me just how widespread this change is. and it's not a huge thing either!! like i just see new solar or wind or the like and it's more of a "huh. neat" or "we need to look into panels for the house" than anything else. so much hope in the little things like that, in seeing the way the world changes when no one is looking.
having governments and activist organizations working for this is making a change, and it's so beautiful and i'm so lucky that i get to be alive to see the world changing for the better. and my area is experiencing unprecedented growth!! and i see so much of that come with solar. there's like, a gas-station style charging station near me. isn't that awesome? i can't wait to see more of it.
That's awesome!! Thank you for sending this in, that really is so full of hope, especially the fact that it's the midwest and it's happening equally across urban, suburban, and rural settings. That's so great to hear.
The renewables revolution isn't going anywhere, and it's because of just what you said: it's cheaper and easier and more profitable. And it's gonna change the world.

people actually sit here and believe that the whole point of gender is "man oppresses woman" and apply that to conversations about trans men. As if we exist as trans men just to oppress women bcuz ... apparently that's why gender exists. Great heavens.
I think they hate the idea that trans men are actually not oppressors, and are in fact oppressed, because its challenges their view of gender when all they know is "men exist as a class to oppress women" (which is... so radfem. And probably why all the "trans inclusive" radfems hate trans men)

boys i'm starting to think building a society where the primary imperative of business is to make as big a profit as possible might have been a bad idea
lads stop me if i'm wrong, but was it a mistake to make money so central to our society that rich people become functionally omnipotent?
gents i can't believe i'm saying this but am i wrong for not trusting the private sector to have my best interests at heart??

Something I really like about timebomb is that Ekko actually knows what he's getting into.
I'm not really seeing it get talked about but in season 1 they mention that Ekko and the firelights help people addicted to shimmer get off it and lead more fulfilling lives within the community. I should probably rewatch the scene for the exact wording (might be misremembering tbh) but that comment implies A LOT.
First: Ekko's mission is helping people where he can, he would probably try and help Jinx even if he wasn't in love with her
Second: He has experience dealing with severe mental illness as that often goes hand in hand with drug abuse, namely depression/suicidal ideation like what Jinx was exhibiting
Third: He's probably mapped out best course of action FOR dealing with this and has already figured out his own limits/boundaries. Meaning he knew what he was getting into trying to talk Jinx out of suicide, and was thus more equipped to deal with the aftermath
Fourth: He's probably helped ex members of Silco's gang. The firelights seem to have a theme of healing and repairing and recovering, so they've probably also learned to forgive. If they're mission is to rebuild the lanes into a safe space, they can't exclude people they don't like, they have to make room for them. I think they fought Silco out of necessity, and I doubt Jinx would be the first person they help who's killed one of them.
These all might be a bit of a stretch but I think it really fits. Beyond that, it shows that Ekko can ACTUALLY help Jinx. As much as unconditional love can do, Ekko has the tools for Jinx's recovery and a path ready for her. He also probably knows that her "healthy" will look different from AU Powder's "healthy." On top of that, I expect he knows how to respect her even in the middle of psychotic breaks and won't agitate her already frail mental state
#if you would like to (respectfully) disagree with me I'll GLADLY talk with you. I can think of nothing but Arcane atm#timebomb#ekko arcane#putting it in the tags bc I want to let people agree with my timebomb takes without having to listen to my other ship opinions#uh on that note I have some Caitlyn and Vi opinions that go a bit hand in hand with this#but I think that in contrast Caitlyn and Vi are mutually self destructive#see neither of them seem to make the others mental health... better.#Vi is desperate and needs love wherever she can get it#and Caitlyn... I'm not sure. I have a hard time reading her but a lot of the vibes I get off her feel like she just likes having the power#over vi#I KNOW THAT'S A STRONG CLAIM#hear me out#Vi in her search for unconditional love does a lot of enabling#a good example is when Caitlyn arrests that henchman in episode 3(?)#Vi is VISIBLY uncomfortable with that and for good reason!#Caitlyn just locked someone up for life for... nothing?#kinda like Marcus did to her (yes Marcus was trying to protect her but I doubt that's how Vi sees it)#but Vi doesn't voice this or push Caitlyn on it#instead she asks Caitlyn not to change#not great communication on Vi's part#but also indicative of how little their values align#and how little Caitlyn actually considers Vi and her problems and history#Caitlyn doesn't help Vi heal and she turns on Vi the second Vi stops enabling her and letting Caitlyn do as she thinks is best#neither of them are ready to deal with the others problems or communicate well#again. willing to discuss this. my opinions are swayable.#I just personally found Caitlyn made the most sense and was most compelling when she was going down facist dictator path#sure she could be more but I don't think the show ever really transitioned her away from that#you can see it in the way she treats Maddy#hhhhhh I should go to bed rather than spill every last thought I've ever had

your male power fantasy stallion protagonist? yeah sorry we forcefemmed her. she's much happier now. yeah actually there wasn't any forcing involved, the moment it was suggested she just started femming herself with a fervor that was honestly impressive. something about being a housewife? I don't know, it was either that or be a girlboss with a body count, so I guess this was the best option. her wife seems happy about it at least. oh, you thought she had a husband? haha yeah about that
