Who's Afraid of Xica Manicongo?

In this year’s Carnaval in Rio, the Paraíso do Tuiuti samba school made their whole presentation themed after Xica Manicongo, the first documented non indigenous travesti (a trans identity that’s very specific to South America) woman in Brazil’s history.

Xica was brought from Congo to Salvador, in Brazil, and sold as a male slave named Francisco Manicongo by the Portuguese in the 16th century. She would walk proudly around the city dressed with a cloth that was open on the side and tied around the front, typical for women where she was from, and was known for meeting with men during her outings.

A christian man once questioned her for the way she was dressed and demanded she would dress “as a man” but she refused to and continued to present as she was. In 1591, the man then accused her of sodomy and reported her to the Inquisition. The penalty for that crime at the time was to be burnt alive in a public square, so to avoid that fate, Xica then started to dress in men’s clothes.

Up until the 20th century, Xica Manicongo was mistakenly considered to be a gay man by historians, until her history was reviewed, and she was given the name Xica by Majorie Marchi, a black travesti woman, president of the ASTRA-Rio (Association of Travestis and Transsexuals of Rio de Janeiro) until her passing in 2016.

It was over an hour of presentation, around three thousand people involved, huge set pieces, all the costumes, music and everything else highlighting the history of trans women, of black trans women, of Xica Manicongo. The biggest cultural celebration in Brazil, people from all over the world come to see the Carnaval, especially in Rio, and this samba school showed this history so beautifully for all the world to see. And not only the history, trans joy, trans people who alive and well and fighting right now.

Among the members of the samba school they also invited many trans people to be a part of their presentation, among them there were deputies, councilors, activists, founders of social projects, actresses, artists, doctors, researchers, dancers, stylists, teachers, sex workers and more, many of them in highlighted sections (up on the floats, or in the opening act).

The samba school also made a partnership with ANTRA, the National Association of Travestis and Transsexuals, and together they founded the Trans-citizenship Project (Projeto Transcidadania), where they taught trans people to dance in preparation for the presentation, and created classes for trans people to teach them how to create costumes and props to be used in the parade. So dancing in the avenue where trans people using costumes made by other trans people, and now that they have those skills, they can be hired to future projects for other carnavals.

It was so beautiful to see, them showing all of that with so much pride and care and calling out conservatives directly. Brazil has been for over a decade the country that kills the most LGBT+ people in the world. The biggest Pride Parade in the world also happens in Brazil (the São Paulo Pride Parade). The fact that both of those things are true at the same time is something that I often think about.

I did my best to translate the lyrics of the song, there were some words that were very specific to African and African-Brazilian cultures that were very hard to translate so I included notes. Some of those words I was already familiar with but others were completely new to me, so I had to do some research, hope I didn’t make any egregious mistakes.

As you can see those are very powerful and very direct lyrics. The “I’m travesti” absolutely impossible to ignore, sang so clearly and holding so much power in that song. Those are the lyrics that were being sung for the entire presentation, the lyrics that the thousands of people watching would sing along to.

Rio’s Carnival: Songs about Afro-Brazilian religions ‘aren’t a coincidence but a movement’

Paraíso do Tuiuti Samba School told the story of Xica Manicongo, the first non-Indigenous trans person in Brazil

The massive presence of samba-plots about Afro-Brazilian religions at this year’s Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is not a mere “coincidence”, but rather “a movement”, according to songwriter Cláudio Russo, who wrote this year’s samba-plot for the Paraíso do Tuiuti Samba School, paying tribute to Brazil’s first Black trans woman, Xica Manicongo. Of the 12 samba schools in the special group, the elite group of Rio’s Carnival, at least nine will sing about this subject.

According to Russo, from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival was fueled by samba-plots sponsored by “the administration of cities and Brazilian states that bankrolled the parades.” “Then it went to big companies. There was a year when Salgueiro and Beija-Flor [other two of Rio’s top samba-schools] sang about the same subject, the history of aviation, each sponsored by a major airline,” he explains.

“That’s over. Sponsored samba-plots are now scarce. This made possible the movement we are seeing today, not only among samba schools but also among Carnival designers in Rio de Janeiro. Most of them have a degree in fine arts, usually from the School of Fine Arts at UFRJ [Federal University of Rio de Janeiro], with an academic background that makes it possible to come up with this kind of plot,” adds Russo.

BdF Entrevista, one of Brasil de Fato’s shows, interviewed Russo at the end of January, before the official parades of samba schools in the special group of Rio’s Carnival. Russo explained that the school presidents liked to talk about Africa and its religions because they supposedly required “much less in-depth research and were cheaper since the materials were made of straw, costumes, etc.”

“But then this movement grew and got to where we are today. We realized that the judges [who assess the samba schools during the parades] like this kind of plot. The ‘Carnival bubble’ loves this kind of plot and, generally, it doesn’t make for bad samba-plots. They are deeply related to our history. And I think this movement is very important because it brings Carnival back to its African roots,” he added.

Muso do Carnaval de renome internacional chega ao Rio para o Réveillon

Sambista conhecido como Gato de Salto viaja pelo mundo promovendo a diversidade e dando aulas de samba no pé.

O forte dele é o samba no pé no alto de uma bela plataforma. De tanto esbanjar talento e habilidade para manter o compasso, o equilíbrio e a elegância em cima dos saltos, ganhou o nome artístico de Gato de Salto. Nascido em São Paulo, o sambista vive hoje em Viena, na Áustria, e realiza aulas e shows de samba pelo mundo inteiro, com passagens em mais de 20 países, atuando também como intérprete das línguas português-inglês, alemão e francês em organizações internacionais. O artista chega ao Brasil neste sábado, 30, para passar o Réveillon no Rio e cumprir a extensa agenda carnavalesca até os desfiles em fevereiro.

Pelo segundo ano como muso, Gato de Salto se prepara para a estreia na escola Império da Tijuca, agremiação que desfila pela Série Ouro do Carnaval carioca na Marquês de Sapucaí. Mas a sua relação com o bairro da Zona Norte da cidade é antiga, quando começou como passista no Salgueiro em 2017 lutando pelo espaço de “Passista Diversidade”, uma vez que o artista tem uma imagem modernista, dança com trajes femininos e defende o samba da cabrocha, se reconhecendo dessa forma. A causa, que trouxe bastante repercussão na época, foi abraçada pela agremiação que conta com esse espaço já definido para o Carnaval de 2024.

Além de precursor nesta iniciativa tão inclusiva, o sambista possui laços familiares e afetivos com a região, o que fez com que o convite viesse espontaneamente por parte do Império da Tijuca: “Eu conheço a comunidade do Morro da Formiga e adoro a energia da escola. Eu espero me renovar como artista e como pessoa e agregar à agremiação”. Mas faz segredo quando o assunto é a sua fantasia, que representa o Requinte do Reisado, situado dentro do enredo em homenagem à cirandeira Lia de Itamaracá: “A roupa do desfile tem um número absurdo de faisões e sempre muita pedraria”, disfarça.

Seus figurinos são desenvolvidos e confeccionados por uma aluna que, de tanto conviver com o artista, se apaixonou pelo Carnaval e criou um ateliê na Áustria chamado Atelier Adiamantina: “Ela aprendeu a executar a criação de fantasias da maneira mais perfeita e atenta aos detalhes que eu já vi. Sempre fico impressionado com o resultado. Tudo é meticulosamente planejado e pensado. O conforto e beleza são incomparáveis a tudo que já vesti em cena”, destaca o sambista, que tem preferência por vir com figurinos bem pequenos e um adereço na cabeça luxuoso, além do salto, claro, sua marca registrada.

Após as festas para brindar o novo ano, Gato de Salto já está preparado para os ensaios técnicos na Avenida que, além de ser um importante treino para as agremiações, funcionam como um termômetro para o público. E o artista realiza esse importante encontro com o Império da Tijuca no próximo sábado, dia 06 de janeiro, dando destaque ao setor que traz as festas do Nordeste. Para pisar forte na Sapucaí, o sambista intensifica os ensaios e os treinos na academia, faz uma dieta controlada e possui o acompanhamento de uma esteticista por conta das luzes do Sambódromo.

Aulas de samba no pé fora do Brasil e representatividade LGBTQIAPN+ marcam a trajetória do artista

Professor de samba no pé há oito anos para alunos em diversos países, Gato de Salto desenvolveu uma metodologia própria para o público estrangeiro: “É um desafio muito especial e gratificante. Quando se dá aula para iniciantes, preciso ensinar as origens do Samba e do ritmo, que para muitos é desconhecido. Essa realidade me forçou a desenvolver uma técnica mais específica”, explica o sambista que aprendeu a arte de sambar com nomes como Evelyn Bastos, Rainha de Bateria da Mangueira, e Alex Coutinho, Diretor da Ala de Passistas da Paraíso do Tuiuti; e também foi integrante da Ala Maculelê no Salgueiro entre 2017 e 2020. As aulas são presenciais e onlines e o sambista vai lançar após o Carnaval um curso virtual exclusivo para iniciantes.

A paixão pelo maior espetáculo da Terra surgiu no artista diante do empoderamento de pessoas que, normalmente, não possuem voz na sociedade: “Não há momento mais arrepiante do que ver mulheres negras se expressando majestosamente no samba. Eu, pessoalmente, nunca me vi representado. Por isso tive que criar e trilhar meu próprio caminho e me sinto honrado em ser a inspiração de outros como eu. O que me move é a minha própria necessidade de me conectar com minhas raízes brasileiras e de expressar minha energia de alma. Preciso ser livre e dançar como eu sou. Não há lugar melhor para isso do que no Carnaval”, reflete.

Para viver momentos tão fortes e significativos na Avenida, Gato de Salto encontra a força e o foco na espiritualidade: “Faço uma oração. Peço calma e um bom desfile para mim e minha escola. Uma herança do meu tempo de passista é tocar o solo no início do Setor 1 e fazer o sinal da Cruz. Acho esse ritual lindíssimo”. E com uma presença tão marcante na Avenida, a principal mensagem do sambista é trazer à sociedade um olhar mais amplo sobre os corpos e suas formas de expressão: “A arte não tem gênero. O artista pode ter um gênero biológico, mas a arte é livre. Quero com a minha imagem provocar uma reflexão”, finaliza.
