Video
i made this in june and then procrastinated adding subtitles until now aghdfhadg. anyway, it’s just supposed to be a fun little video with some queer scenes i thought of off the top of my head. hope you enjoy!
[Video Description: White text on a dark grey background that says: "Star Trek Pride - LGBT by cupcakKe. some queer star trek scenes (definitely not all or most of them). In the top left corner is an illustration of the progress flag with rainbow horizontal stripes and with more stripes on the left side of the flag in a V-formation. The outmost stripe being black, then brown, light blue, light pink, white; followed by a yellow triangle with a purple line forming a circle in the middle.
Benjamin Sisko saying: "We're coming out". The song LGBT begins to play. It's instrumental.
Quark saying: "This is time for a pride demonstration."
A woman has her arms crossed. She is standing next to a man who is looking up at her. She says: "Our library is far too sophisticated for a man to comprehend." Cut to Riker who looks away. Behind him are Troi and Yar and Data. Data steps forward as he says: "I'm an android, mistress." The genderqueer flag appears in front of Data's torso, accompanied by three sparkles.
Kirk and Spock are standing in front of each other. Spock says: "I have been and always shall be yours." As Spock speaks it, the word "yours" appears on screen in cursive and surrounded by three sparkles.
Spock sits down on the captain's chair, looking puzzled. In the background nurse Chapel and Uhura walk into frame. They give each other a small hug and they kiss. A heart line appears around them. Chapel walks off into the turbolift. Uhura just stands there for a moment with one hand near her mouth. Three small hearts surround her.
Picard and Riker power-walk with serious expressions through a corridor on the Enterprise. The lyrics of the song go: "fuck out my way when you see me / I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
La Forge and Worf run through a corridor on the Enterprise. The lyrics of the song again: "fuck out my way when you see me"
Spock is lying in a bed in sick bay. McCoy and Kirk stand next to the bed. Kirk has a very concerned expression. He leans over Spock and has his hand on Spock's shoulder while Spock's hand rests on Kirk's arm. Song: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT". The camera angle changes so the viewer looks at Spock from over Kirk's shoulder. Kirk and Spock now hold hands. Song: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT / I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
Jadzia Dax passionately kissing her ex wife. Song: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT / lookin' like we belong on TV / I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
A short shot of Lieutenant Yar, then cut to Counselor Troi who says to Picard: "Lt. Yar is physically very attractive." The song is just instrumental again. Bashir sitting on a couch. Behind him is O'Brien sitting on something else. Bashir looks at O'Brien who says: "Well, people either love... or hate you". The words "love you" appear on-screen in a soft pink font as they are spoken and the words "hate you" appear in a hard red font as they are spoken.
Cut to a different scene featuring Bashir and O'Brien. They are sitting right next to each other leaning against a wall. Bashir says: "...and I love Ezri. Passionately." There a vocals of the song heard faintly in the background.
Cut back to the first scene. O'Brien is now leaning on the couch near Bashir and says: "I really do!" Bashir looks at him expectantly. O'Brien says: "...not hate you anymore." The words "not hate you" appear on-screen in a soft pink font.
Cut back to the second scene. Bashir says: "It's just that I... like you... a bit more."
Kirk, Spock and a yeoman are on the bridge. Kirk is sitting in the captain's chair. The other two are standing behind him. The yeoman is touching Kirk's lower back. Kirk says: "Dig it in there, Mr.Sp-" but cuts himself off as he notices Spock who stepped next to him so that Kirk can see him standing there. Kirk and Spock exchange a look. The yeoman takes her hand away.
Jadzia Dax and a klingon are hugging. The klingon laughs and says: "Oh Curzon! My beloved old friend." Jadzia answers: "I'm Jadzia now". Light blue, light pink and white hearts appear around her face. They let the hug go and are now holding onto each others' arms. An illustration of a worm on the string coloured as the trans flag appears on screen. The klingon says: "Ah, well, Jadzia! My beloved old friend."
Data walking through the corridors of the Enterprise. There are other officers walking towards him. He changes direction and walks into a corridor on the right. When the other officers get close to him a force-field appears and two of the officers walk into it and fall to the ground. Data keeps walking unfazed. Data has left the frame and the two officers are still on the ground. The song is louder again and the lyrics go: "fuck out my way when you see me / I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
Tuvok jogs through a corridor on the Voyager followed by a couple of crewmembers jogging behind him. Other officers who were walking there have to make space for them and stand with their backs by the wall. Song: "fuck out my way when you see me / I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
Data and Geordi look at each other and give each other a nod. Geordi smiles and his hand rests on Data's shoulder. Song: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
Mirror!Kira and Mirror!Ezri standing in front of each other. Kira holds Ezri's chin in her hand. Then they kiss. Song: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT / lookin' like we belong on TV / I'm rollin' with the LGBT"
Odo scoffs, turns and walks away. Song: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT" Cut to Quark standing next to Kira. Quark says: "That man loves me!" The song faintly goes: "I'm rollin' with the LGBT" and then fades out. Quark, turning to Kira, says: "Couldn't you see? It was written all over his back" He then raises a glass he's holding to where Odo had been standing and walks out of frame as well. Description End]

Some spoiler-y obervations on today's SNW episode, "Hegemony":
I'm really glad we got to see an adult Gorn that looks more humanoid. When Sam found those anomalous human readings I was really concerned they'd go with a "TOS Gorn a weird Human-Gorn hybrids" thing.
ERICA GOT TO SAY MULTIPLE SENTENCES IM SO HAPPY
I was 100% sure Batel was gonna die when she made a log entry at the start :D Pleasently surprised by how that went
I kinda wish the Gorn weren't such a drawn-out plot with SNW. The feeling I'm getting is that they're just doing "Arena" but with eight episodes scattered over three seasons and I don't really see how that's gonna be better than "Arena". For what it's worth I'd love to get a closer look at how Gorn society in SNW actually works, like how did y'all build those spaceships if you keep cannibalising everyone. And to this episode's credit they did tease in that direction.
Definitely more on board with Scotty by the end of the episode than at the start. I really hope we can keep Carol Kane next season and have her mentor Scotty. I like what SNW has done with Spock, Uhura, Chapel and M'Benga; so I'm optimistic about Scotty, but my first instinct whenever a new major TOS character appears is generally to groan.
How exactly does a demarcation line within a solar system? Like, I'm no physicist, but don't planets usually rotate around stars? Wouldn't that shift planets in and out of Gorn/Federation territory depending on the time of year? Incidentally, there's a Trek novel (by Peter David of course) that explores that exact situation, where a planet is in (IIRC) Tholian territory for two days every year.
Pike's voice when he says "Spock" after seeing the destroyed Caygua is just TT
Seeing Pike interrupt Battel's mission here with a subspace phone call, I wish we'd see that more often the other way around. "Sorry honey, can't talk right now I have to make the pirates revolt against their captain, I'll call you back later okay?"
Love the music cues reminiscent of TOS. And I'm glad in general that the post-Berman Trek shows got to recover from the "sonic wallpaper" directive.
The Starfleet delta pattern on the space suits is really distracting. Like, I know I'm supposed to look at how they're hand-holding but wow, that is a lot of deltas!
It kinda rubs me the wrong way that Spock and Chapel killed the Gorn on the Cuyaga, just when the planetside story gets all about how maybe we can talk with the Gorn. Probably doesn't help that the Gorn took like ten seconds to suffocate and seemed to be in excruciating pain throughout. Like, c'mon Chapel, shoot him already, it's be more merciful.
I think SNW is actually quite clever with connecting its Gorn continuity to that of TOS. The SNW Gorn ships like very different from the TOS ones, which is great because in "Arena" no one recognizes the new ship. The Gorn are only revealed as the perpetrators in conversation with the Metrons, so I think it's feasable that Kirk just doesn't know of them (as long as his relationship with La'an doesn't get any further) and the rest of the crew didn't want to interrupt during the conversation with the seemingly very powerful Metrons. After Kirk is teleported by the Metrons Uhura screams, because 60s show (she should be used to teleportation right, being in Starfleet), but the SNW retcon that she knows of the Gorn and their horrors really gives that moment new depth and makes it less silly.

Storytelling and Character Development in Those Old Scientists
As the show that isn’t strictly serialized but also doesn’t have a hard reset button, the Strange New Worlds writers really impressed me with their genre savvy in so many ways with “Those Old Scientists.”
Several characters have very meaningful, not just silly interactions with Boimler and Mariner. The jokes were overwhelmingly good and the SNW crew were funny without acting outrageously out of character.
Except for Spock.
And that’s the part I think is brilliant. We’ve got another silly episode to go before we find out if this is a lasting thing or not, but if Spock experimenting with expressing his emotions is going to be a thing going forward, then SNW deftly anticipated how uncomfortable this was going to make fans and they leaned into it!
Starting this arc, if an arc it’s meant to be, in the midst of a comedy episode threw open the door to telegraphing to the audience what the appropriate reaction was. Which is cringe. Deliberately so. Spock is bad at this. Extremely bad at this. It’s okay to be uncomfortable. That’s what they’re aiming for.
Boimler’s future knowledge about Spock is another meta way of assuring the canon hawks once again that while the Prime timeline is messy at the level of detail, no one intends to screw with the fundamentals. Spock’s flirtation with expressing emotions is a phase.
However, I don’t think it’s just a bit. I don’t think anything in this episode was only for comedy. This episode is a lot like the character of Mariner herself. If you only pay attention to the funny, you’re missing what’s really going on.
Una gets a nice bit of reassurance that eventually she’s not going to represent a shameful episode in Starfleet history where it discovers a closeted “freak” in their midst, eventually her words and image are considered so powerful they’re recruiting poster material.
Pike also gets a vision of his afterlife. The clock is ticking but he’s on the right track and making the most of the time he has left.
Chapel and Spock get some seeds of doubt planted in them.
Uhura is encouraged to take better care of herself as the key to becoming the all star she now knows is her professional legacy. To become a more well rounded person.
Which brings us back to Spock.
The interesting thing about Spock and Boimler’s interaction is that I think Boimler is completely wrong. Not in a bad way, but like any student of history, he’s got caught up in the myth making.
Clearly the version of Spock he became invested in de-emphasized his decision to turn away from purging his emotions. The Spock we see from that point forward clearly feels emotion, he’s just not ruled by it. That Spock is so completely comfortable in his skin in a way that few humans or Vulcans ever seem to be.
My read on this is that post-Star Trek TMP, Spock has amicably reconciled his twin natures and has found a way to quietly permit himself emotion, and even to let a little out in a way that is designed to help his close colleagues read him better. Yet he also retains the immense discipline.
This is the path that I believe Ethan Peck’s Spock is on. His Spock will struggle to find an equilibrium until re establishing the sort of inner peace that can permit him to push forward a little emotion now and then to playfully gaslight McCoy and then deny everything as part of their eternal fencing.

The Noonien-Singh Family (ST:TOS & ST:SNW)
So the fact that Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh, the Enterprise's security officer, is a descendant of Khan Noonien-Singh, one of the brutal dictators that were overthrown in the Eugenics Wars, always raised the question, "But were his augments inheritable?" Is she, technically, what the bullies on the playground called her, an augment?
And I want to be bluntly clear about something here: Khan, and his fellow augments, had their DNA hand-selected by their parents, but I know of no canon or even soft-canon source that says that it was non-human or artificial DNA. I read the clues as suggesting that the particular augmentation package that his parents chose selected for intelligence, ambition, and ruthlessness at the expense, however intentional, of conscience or empathy.
So there's a follow-up question to that that's been on my mind literally since I first saw "Space Seed" in UHF reruns as a kid 50ish years ago, something that seemed obvious to me if no one else.
So what if the augments' parents deliberately gave birth to highly capable sociopaths? It's not like Earth didn't already have plenty of naturally-born highly capable sociopaths.
How much of the augments' rise to power, in the years before World War III, had to do with the fact that they were bright, high-functioning sociopaths? And how much of it had to do with the fact that their parents were wealthy enough to have access to the procedure? Or politically powerful enough? Or both? Did, in fact, the augmentations actually do anything?
So we find out in this episode that La'an Noonien Singh fears that she may have inherited, from one of her many ancestors, gene complexes predisposing her to sociopathic tendencies. At that remove, there's no reason to assume so. There's also no reason to rule out the possible that she, or Pike, or M'benga, or Chapel, or Uhura, or anybody else on the ship could have inherited those same naturally-occurring gene complexes. At this many generations removed from the Eugenics Wars, are her odds actually that much higher?
High on the list of reasons that the augmentation ban is such serious horseshit (not bad writing, not unrealistic, but legitimately a horseshit fact about the Federation) is that "do you have sociopathic ancestors?" is not a relevant question. The question is are you a sociopath?
Acting governor Kodos of Rigel Minor, "Kodos the Executioner," was a sociopath, and he was Starfleet. John Gill, who recruited the pre-warp people of Ekos to straight-up Nazism was clearly a sociopath, and he was a Starfleet Academy instructor. Neither of them had the excuse of having an augmented ancestor.
You know who hasn't shown any evidence yet of sociopathic tendencies, just brusque manners? La'an Noonien-Singh. And, yes, Una Chin-Riley.
(And by the way, even if being augmented had more to do with their rise to power than their inherited wealth and position, all that would prove is that augmenting humans is a bad idea, that humans can't be trusted with unsupervised access to genetic engineering. It wouldn't prove anything about whether or not the Illyrians could be trusted with it, now, would it?)

Tumblr media
At the arrival, they have found a city apparently abandoned by its inhabitants. They get confusing signals on their scanners and the readings of a power source on a building in front of them. While his teammates explore the inside of the building, Sulu finds a mobile plant and gets hurt mortally by one of its thorns. Kirk, McCoy and Spock came to his rescue once they listen to his scream for help.
Tumblr media
The doctor applies one of his antidotes, but it is useless aganist the plant's poison. Then, a group of plant-like beings suddenly appeared. Their leader, Agmar offers a cure for Sulu but McCoy refusses the help. Kirk accepts the help from the natives and just when they apply their antidote, Sulu recovers very fast.
Tumblr media
Agmar, the Phylosian told to the crew that they had an earlier contact with humans. One that brought the an infectious bactery that killed a generation of their own, but he also helped them to survive. As they are entering thru a cave, a flock of dragon-like flying plant-lifeforms attack the Enterprise's crew and kidnap Spock.
Tumblr media
The Phylosians got a system that makes phasers not working, then a giant human appeared and the natives made a bow to him. He identifies as Doctor Stavos Keniclus 5, the man who saved the natives from extintion. He told the team that he needs Spock for his plans and also told them to leave the planet.
Kirk orders to beam up the rest of the crew.
On the bridge, Kirk orders Lt. Uhura to investigate any data about Keniclus 5. Meanwhile, the doctor tries to find a way to defend themselves against the plant-lifeforms by using a recepie for a pesticide from his gran-grandfather's farm.
Uhura found a record of a scientist Keniciclus who left the Earth after loosing the Eugenic Wars. Kirk is surprised and trying to guess how he survived after more than 200 years.
Tumblr media
Kirk, McCoy and Sulu return to the planet's surface but much prepeared to rescue Spock. The natives brought them to a underground compound where Spock is located.
Tumblr media
Inside the cave compound, they encounter again with Keniciclus 5. He reveals himself as the fifth generation clone of the original Dr. Keniciclus. His plan is to imposing peace by strenght to the galaxy by invading every single planet they could. For that reason, he produced a Mr. Spock's clone, Spock 2.
Tumblr media
As soon as they learned Keniciclus 5's plans for galactic conquest, a new wave of the dragon-like flying plant-lifeforms made an attack. This time, the team is ready to counter using McCoy's pesticide formula as a weapon.
Tumblr media
After a successfully defeat of the flying creatures, Kirk triex to reason with Keniciclus 5 that he is unaware of the present time. That there is no need to continue wars from the past because the Federation had brought peace thru the galaxy. Then Kirk had a conversation with Spock 2 about the illogical action of imposing peace thru strenght. Some that goes against the Vulcan philosophy of infinite diversity in infinite combinations. Something that simbolize the elements of truth and beauty.
Spock 2 asserts Kirk's words and changes his mind. Meanwhile, the original Spock is dying in a chamber because of a memory drain performed by the mad scientist, Keniciclus 5. Spock 2 performs a Vulcan mind meld to help his original self to recover.
At the end, Keniciclus 5 was feeling useless after his plans failed miserably, Kirk and the original Spock convince him to use all of his knowledge and strength to help on the restoring of the Phylosian civilization with the help of Spock 2. All of them agree on that.

Fascinating Facts:
This episode was written by Walter Koenig. Due to budget restrictions, Koenig was not cast for playing the role of Lieutenant Chekov in The Animated series, but he made his collaboration by writing this episode.
Tumblr media
The Koenig's main source for inspiration for writing the story was the fact that cloning was a very discussed subject in that time.
The mobile plant-lifeform who attackes Sulu has the name of Retlaw. It is Walter spelled backwards. The idea came from a story of a comic book series where the aliens spoke bakwards.
The first reference to the Vulcan philosophy of Infinite Diversity In Infinite Combinations (or IDIC) was made in the third season episode of The Original Series titled “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” At first, Leonard Nimoy refused the idea for a symbol because he thought Gene Roddenberry's idea for merchandising its pin.

spuhura
I'm just going to do AOS spuhura for this
when I started shipping it if I did: Gotta be honest when I watched the movies I had no real strong feelings either way about Spuhura. But when I got into AOS mckirk, spuhura is normally the other pairing and reading all those fics made me ship them.
my thoughts: Most of the takes about their on screen relationship are super harsh and hyperbolic. Also Spock should get all the heat for the Farragut thing, like he literally admits to putting her on a different ship for non legitimate reasons. A more positive thought is I just think that they're cute!
What makes me happy about them: This may be a bit shallow but the height difference!!! When she stands on her tippy toes to kiss Spock in Into Darkness!!!!!! Literally perfection.
What makes me sad about them: Them breaking up in Beyond, them having to watch each other risk their lives.
things done in fanfic that annoys me: Like I get why its so prevalent and I've enjoyed fics that this was present in but I wish there was less Uhura being insecure of her relationship with Spock because of Jim.
things I look for in fanfic: McCoy & Uhura and Uhura & Kirk friendship.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Spock with McCoy. I'm not as sure with Uhura, I want to say Chapel but she was done so dirty in AOS so I guess Scotty? I don't really ship AOS Uhura with anyone else.
My happily ever after for them: They would serve on the Enterprise for at least 2 more missions, getting married in this time, with an extremely smug Sarek in attendance. Then they would go on shorter missions that allow them to focus on other things, Spock starts his work as an ambassador and Uhura teaching at the academy and being able to spend more time fully immersing herself into all the languages she only ever got to briefly experience. They spend time between New Vulcan and Earth and basically live to an old age being the power couple of the Federation/Starfleet.
who is the big spoon/little spoon: Uhura is the big spoon.
what is their favorite non-sexual activity: Performing music together but I also think Spock enjoys braiding Uhura's hair.

I'm not into star trek what's the context behind the kiss
Tumblr media
@vympr
the episode, "plato's stepchildren" involves a group of telepathic people who model themselves after greeks and call themselves the "platonians". the platonians also live for a very very long time and as such have a near constant desire to be entertained n all that. after they dont get their way, the platonians use their psychic powers to force kirk, spock, uhura, and nurse chapel to do humiliating things for their amusement, which includes the kiss. if you actually watch the kiss scene youll see that neither kirk nor uhura are into it and theyre clearly uncomfortable. the acts never go beyond that, but like. the kiss was against their will and white people STILL got mad like HUH 😭 anyways, i feel like the framing of the kiss ignores the reaaally uncomfortable context so everytime bhm comes around and people bring it up it makes me 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

ok so i think to try and at least keep up the interest and variety of the poll i wanna like group stuff into sub groups so we can hopefully keep up variety until later tho this is subject to change so like older classic stuff section: xena/gabrielle, janeway/seven of nine, kiradax, homura/michiru, misato/ritsuko, talia/susan from babylon 5, faith/buffy (maybe willow and tara but i do feel like i wanna make the distinction of femslash rather than just popular couple tho i know that line is very fuzzy), uhura/chapel for bravely pioneering femslash zines for the rest of us perhaps anthy and utena in this category but im a tad afraid of their power and ability to sweep polls to make them boring.. so this is the classic 90s giants and then weirdo sci fi stuff i like :) then like tumblr era classiques: so brittana, korrasami, swan queen, madoka/homura, bubbline, rosemary, vrisrezi, gwen/morgana, root/shaw, maybe ill run another sub poll to determine which of the various mediocre but popular femslash ships that were big at various points ur supercorps ur bering and wells whatever that i didnt watch or didnt get into cuz atm swan queens the one im letting thru cuz i was in the trenches there..oh in that vein probably villaneve deserves a mention then was like gonna put a bunch of the cartoon characters together so we can kinda hash it out there so like ruby/sapphire, catradora, um arent there those little gay kids from the owl house.. luz and amity i see, starfire/raven... actually im not sure any of these will be final categories but now im simply grouping for mental clarification video game girlies.. i was told to include merribel, harley/ivy, glados/chell, alphys/undyne ok now just a million ones i have heard of an considering.... then like stuff im considering including karma and amy from faking it because i run this poll and can make the choices, glinda/elpheba, all versions of carmilla/laura cuz i dont wanna make it just about the webseries, maybe bobbie/avaserala i know this is niche and theres a lot of sci fi shit here but i make the rules!! also on that note maybe georgiou/michael cuz again i was a believer before that show even started, i see that farcille the dungeon meshi girls get lots of reblogs, maxanne for the black sails fans and my bestie <3, avalance cuz my mutuals talk about it, amina/saira cuz i wanna :3, oh probably some of the locked tomb girlies, ok these are all my ideas thank u for suggestions mouse would love comments critiques suggestions..... wrow incredible im already at 32 plus 3 more potential inclusions so i have enough for a big bracket but again tell me the ones u think i should take out tell me who u think i should include thank you for your time :3

La'an: "Why aren't you practising with Mr. Spock?" Erica: "Oh, things are kind of weird between them." XD Erica knooows
"Explore new interests such as cooking." Awww
Sam!
Una, Erica, Nyota and La'an all hanging out together - crew!
"It is good to see you Nurse Chapel." So so awkward.
He barely looks different as human, but it's still so strange!
I find it so funny they have 10 minute intros. Just put the titles whenever, y'know?
Spock's face cycling through his emotions so quickly, that's impressive!
Oh no, the second hand embarrassment about Spock interrupting tat meeting. Aghhhh
"Vulcans can be such jerks." *hug* "Did I read the moment wrong?" Oh, that's super sweet!
"Sometimes I don't cry in the shower. Kidding!" What is he like?!
Amanda!!!
HAT! It's now hiding human ears rather than Vulcan ones! I love love love this!
"You aren't a practised liar yet." Oh is this when he learns to lie?
Uhura is the only one who sounds like a Vulcan XD The others are so bad at it!
I thought they were going to do the Illyrian gene thing there, saying their medicine couldn't fix the genes.
Interesting that Amanda hides her ears with her hair
No, Spock, you have to tell T'Pring or you won't be able to hide it if she's not on your side!
The dad! "These are delicious!" Who said Vulcans don't show emotions?
Girls on tour!
"Yeah, I hate analogies." XD
"So what, I gotta be the one to vote against doing the crazy maneuver? Does that sound like me?" ERICA MY BELOVED I'm so happy to see more of you being you :3
Spock's expression while being interrogated - somehow so neutral but you can see him holding back
"The other being diverted shields away from himself to protect you." "(quietly) He what?" Oh. Oh.
"Oh my god. Christine, come on!" "Seriously you do know. Tell them!" It sounds like they've been waiting for this opportunity for too long XD
Ughhhh why does friendship have to not be a convincing enough reason on its own?
"Yes, uh, the very important earth transition of..." "-charades" HAH! I CANNOT, YES! I want to see this so badly. (I love how strained Pike looks. Poor, stressed dear XD)
"I have to tell you-" *stab* oh Christine!!!
Spock not managing to hold the secret in, even as a Vulcan, but he's doing it Vulcanly because Vulcans do have feelings ughh I cannot!
"You refer to my human side as a handicap, yet my mother is the most resilient, compassionate, tolerant person I've known." TOO CUTE. I LOVE THIS
"You can read about it in my paper when it comes out later this year." POWER MOVE GIRLLL
Chris is the most dadliest dad in this episode and I love him for it
When T'Pring said "time apart", I don't think she meant go and kiss someone else straight away! Spock! Seriously?!
Okay, I enjoyed that episode - though I think Spock Amok was better? I am miffed we did not get to see T'Prings dad doing charades though! We were robbed! How can you mention that and then not even show it a little bit? XD

episodes 5 analysis
i support women's wrongs, i support women's rights, but most of all, i support women's rights to be messy
in short, this episode truly captured something that i have always said about christine: she is absolutely brilliant, a genius in her field, and while emotionally intelligent when it comes to others, she has a lot of trouble making her voice heard when it comes to things that are extremely personal to her.
she is afraid of listening to her own heart and getting hurt, so she hides behind a smile instead. no one thinks the girl who laughs loud and fast has anything to hide, not when she lives her life so exuberantly.
she involves others in her life. everyone on the ship is helping her study. which means not only did she tell people, they all stopped what they were doing to read up on what her fellowship is about in order to quiz her.
as i explained on my previous unhinged post, christine is someone who inspires others to love and help her. that is just her power. and this episode made that very clear.
so, without further ado, let's get into it.
first scene, christine studying.
korby's principles. here we have another mention of my arch-nemesis, and also the man i'm weirdly obsessed about, i apologize, roger kirby. the show is establishing him as a huge deal on the field, knowing and understanding his principles is part of the application process.
we have christine reciting each principle (and she will use them all by the end of the episode) in various scenes. first, we have her and m'benga on sickbay and their fist bump.
Tumblr media
then, we have her and uhura training. and i just want to stop and say something i haven't said this season: let's stop and appreciate her hair here:
Tumblr media
i honestly adored this little moment between her and uhura. seeing christine on an enterprise t-shirt which is??? hot as fuck, not gonna lie. but also the little twirl she does when she gets it right??? it was so sweet and adorable! she is so excited about getting it right. i love how she just enjoys herself, does a little dance. its perfect.
finally, we have girls's night. christine, la'an and erica drinking together and they all do a shot when christine gets the final principle right.
Tumblr media
also, appreciation post for christine's dangly earrings. fashion statement.
here we have the chief medical officer, the chief of security and the pilot (+their prodigy communications officer) all helping christine prepare for her fellowship, being supportive of her. i love the found family vibes, how they all care about her. and you know christine would do the same for them.
also, i find this field christine is studying absolutely fascinating. a study of history, of people, understanding that your knowledge may not be as advanced as previous understandings of it. that you have to look backward to move forward. it is a perfect fit for her personality, a more humanities based approach of science, and something completely unique to what we've seen before.
also, if you are wondering, christine's favorite historical period is... one which did not happen (arthurian legends). jk jk. no, but she honestly loves tales of chivalry.
shuttle scene
oh, christine. baby girl.
what an awkward moment.
It is good to see you, Nurse Chapel. We did see each other in the turbolift the other day.
christine? why??? like, i love it. erica mentions on a previous scene that spock and christine aren't talking and things are awkward between them. so here we have smooth christine chapel, who doesn't appear to have trouble flirting or talking to people, making things awkward.
i feel like it was born out of exhaustion. she is tired of this situation, of this weird distance between them. he is her friend and she misses him. so she lashes out. he is polite and impersonal and she hates this. this is christine, who insists on being called christine, who dislikes formalities, and here he is, her friend, acting like she is a stranger.
spock though, is sweet. even though he was not involved in helping her study, he clearly heard about it and is now trying to support her in his own way. saying the vulcans would be lucky to have her. at this moment in time, vulcans are super human-phobic. spock is literally the only human-vulcan hybrid to exist (to survive, actually) and it took a lot of work to make their genetics match and the efforts were met with hostility. i feel like christine never had a good chance to get that fellowship because of the anti-human prejudice there (see disco season one), but here we have spock, someone who has faced this hostility, trying to say it will be okay??? because he believes in her? knows how good she is???
*screams*
anyways. let's all appreciate how cute she looks before we move on:
Tumblr media
then we get this wonderful line from christine:
I don't usually read into this sort of thing much, but, uh, it's felt like you've been avoiding me.
and the way jess delivers it... its so perfect. its clear that, no, she is lying, this is something she thinks about a lot, that she pays attention to, because she pays attention to people. so of course she noticed it from the second his behaviour changed. but she is careful, tries to make it seem like it doesn't matter, that this isn't hurting her.
and spock, of course, immediately swerves and does not answer.
anyways, i am obsessed that spock is so in love with christine he can't even talk to her normally.
if i had two nickels every time a man loved christine so much he became a mess, i'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird that me and @highaver had this plot (but beautifully platonic) already going on. snw writers??? are you following me??? let's talk, i have ideas.
back on the ship
i really appreciate getting to see christine zooming about, trying to come up with an answer. the way the show framed her was excellent. m'benga is offering suggestions and she immediately countering him, it is clear that when it comes to genetics, they are on equal ground and she might even know more than him. it is a very good use of her skills, and a very nice twist on a dynamic that majel said was boring during her time (just going yes doctor, i'll get it for you). christine gets to be a capable medical professional, a scientist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
christine and m'benga's friendship means so much to me, so i was very glad to see them working together again.
the way she so easily admits to him that she feels guilty, that she survived unscathed while he was hurt, using the worlds survivor's guilt. now that we know they served in the war together, this easy connection, the trust they have in each other (i'm gonna say christine always knew rukiya was there, no i don't have any proof but i know she did) is so?? beautiful.
back to christine, her working through the night??? m'benga questioning her and she just moves on to talk about work instead of admitting it?? i love a workaholic guilty gal who pushes herself to the limit in order to save her friends. becoming so focused, she forgets about her interview.
the interview.
well, that did not go well.
first, we have to talk about how the vulcan addresses her. he calls her miss chapel, which i found weird. now, in this blog, i have it as canon that she already has a phd, but even if she didn't, she is still nurse chapel, she has a title and he addresses her as if she was someone off the street.
i do love that christine's first reaction is to say christine. i love her informality, it is a nice consistent trait.
the interviewer is a jerk. the way he sees science is also very close-minded, something to be repeated and memorized, instead of understood and developed further, which is what christine did. she used her field experience to enrich her application:
Well, I just thought that maybe my field work would be relevant, given that I've made several discoveries.
with her being on a ship that is making first contact + exploring civilizations that have since been abandoned, christine has a lot of opportunity to study archeological medicine, to be the first person to analyze a culture under that gaze and discover something new, something meaningful for the present. i'm loving the idea that she's been publishing papers, becoming bigger in her field, while she is on enterprise. that she hasn't given up on being an academic, a researcher, this is still a big part of her life.
anyways, i'm gonna fight that guy behind denny's tomorrow.
meeting spock on the corridor.
Tumblr media
first and foremost, let's all stop and appreciate how beautiful she is. beaming, huge smile, soft eyes, laugh lines and small dimples at the corner of her lips!! honestly, is there anyone prettier than her?? cuter??? not when she has a smile like this.
i really liked that this was her only interaction with human!spock. for one, she was too busy the rest of the episode coming up with a cure to interact with him socially, or participate in his human lessons. but also, i think it gave her a glimpse of a more simple life, one where spock is quick to hug her when she feels sad, that he cracks jokes more openly, and understands what she is feeling. and while we can see her get swept up in the possibility, we also see she is not happy with it. she misses the old spock, wants that vulcan part of him just as much as the human side. he is not one or the other, he is both, that's the person she loves.
like, considering that christine has always represented textually his more human side, his humanity, softness, to separate them during this moment was very clever. it showed she is more than an accessory to his story line, but by also having this one moment, it also reinforced their connection. in every other moment, he is floundering, not understanding social rules and cues. but in that moment, because his human side already had a connection with her, it was easier. and again, that's the power of christine, of who she is -- she makes it easy for people to exist around her. he had nothing to prove, he didn't need to pretend he knew what he was doing, he could just be.
and here is one more gif of her smiling cause she is so adorable:
Tumblr media
back to sickbay + scene with the girls
christine has run through all available options. federation technology. m'benga secret studies, her own research. she's gone through them all and hasn't found a solution, the change the alien species made to spock's dna impossible to revert. again, i love that we saw christine being treated as an equal, and honestly, the expert. m'benga is not involved?? at all? he is assisting her, but he isn't doing the work, which means he knows she is the one who should be responsible for finding this cure, that this is spock's best option.
I JUST LOVE IT WHEN SHE GETS TO BE A SCIENTIST.
but science can only take you so far. when that fails, she needs to go batshit insane and let her heart lead her.
she goes to erica and nyota and convinces them to steal a shuttle so they can go talk to some aliens (alien which no other species has made contact with in thousands of years).
erica asks her if the captain okeyed this and she just doesn't answer. she continues talking about the plan, gives a speech and convinces the girls to basically go rogue. and again, CHRISTINE'S POWER!!! she can convince people to do anything, i won't be convinced otherwise.
If we don't do this now, Spock is going to be stuck like this. I was in that crash with him, and I survived, while he... was changed. If there is a way to save him, I have to try.
anyways, i need her to get into some sort of trouble for this.
BUT ALSO!!! the fact m'benga also knew and was like: rip, its impossible to stop her, what did you want me to do? tie her up?? cause that's the only way to stop her?? obsessed with this energy for her, actually.
scene with the aliens
girlies, if i cried when christine started crying, that's my problem, and i should not be judged for having a soft heart because christine has the softest heart in the world and that's what she used to convince the aliens to save her friend (and grumble grumble FRIENDS SHOULD GET TO LOVE AS DEEPLY AS OTHER RELATIONSHIPS THAT WAS RIDICULOUS FOR A SHOW THAT IS BUILT ON FOUND FAMILY OKAY)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyways, first, let's just take a second, and once again how admire, how heartbreakingly beautiful she is. how big her eyes are.
now let's mock her
the second gif, her doing a little movement asking for the girls to turn around so she can talk to the entity about her feelings privately?? even though they can still hear everything she says?? is absolutely adorable and charming. she wants that, even though its an illusion. they can still hear her crying, talking about her feelings, how much it hurts.
but it is absolutely christine. she denies her feelings to everyone, and to herself, she needs that illusion of privacy in order to be honest with herself. its such a small delicate thing but it really shows what sort of person christine is, and what her fears are.
also, when christine learns that spock diverted the shields to save her, her face! the entity calls them each other's caregivers and that's a great summary. they take care of each other, look out for each other,. they do it in quiet ways, in loud ways, in risking the enterprise and by not sleeping for nights in order to find a solution.
and then we have christine giving the episode's great big speech. it compliments perfectly with amanda's speech about how hard it is to love a vulcan when you are human.
Spock is... He's my friend. And... maybe sometimes, I wish that we had... more... connection. But when you healed him, you changed him. You made him, um, easier to talk to, someone who probably, um... understands my feelings a little better. But, um... it's not him. At least, it's not all of him because you took away the other part, a part that I was connected to. And I miss him... as he was. Can you please help put him back?
even though it is hard, it hurts, she loves him for who he is. this version of him, that is easier, who made her laugh and hugged her when he realized she was sad, is precious, but it is not spock, and she is not going to stop until she saves him. and she does, she gets the information she needs to create a cure. not by being the smartest person in the room, but by realizing that current science can only take her so far, that she needs to use technology from another culture to save him.
and to get the information, she doesn't need to dazzle someone, or memorize instructions. she needs to connect. so she shows the entity the truth inside her heart.
back to the ship
Tumblr media
after all of it, when she comes back, when he tries to say he returns her feelings, she stops him. she wants him back as he was, and if he can only confess his feelings when he is isn't in control of himself, she doesn't want it. she respects him too much for that. to allow him to do something he wouldn't normally do.
she wants all of him, faults and difficulties, or not at all.
also, i keep staring at this gif and i can't stop thinking about pride and prejudice:
You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.
and yes, i demand an au now.
back to the scene, when christine leaves and she is heartbroken i was ready to fight someone. she faced her feelings, admitted them to herself and the galaxy, saved spock and then had to let him go so he could go back to his engagement dinner. she can't have him, he is not hers, she has to let him go and it hurts so much. in this scene, when he says, i have many feelings, its confusing she replies yes, i know, me too. the girl on the shuttle at the beginning of the episode wouldn't have said that, she would have smiled and tried to make a joke of it. she wouldn't have opened her heart.
so when she has to leave, has to let him go, that hurts. she's been running away, trying not to face it, so it won't hurt as much, and the universe forced her to face it in order to save him. to save him, she broke her own heart.
Tumblr media
telling that vulcan (not spock) to go fuck himself ( and fucking spock )
LET ME JUST
I encountered a species that hasn't interacted with humans or Vulcans for centuries. I convinced them to help me with an ancient medical procedure. What sort of medical procedure? You can read about it in my paper when it comes out later this year. I would consider applying again, but, you know, the truth is... I don't think your fellowship is ready for me.
christine actually used the korby principles in real life. she did something unique, and completely impossible, and instead of using that to gain entry into the fellowship, she realized that she deserves better than a fellowship that isn't going to teach her anything a book won't. she is doing groundbreaking field work. she is going to wait for an opportunity where she can actually learn something new.
and again, brilliant christine. as i said at the beginning of the post, christine is incredible, a genius in her field. and here she is, after making a mess out of her personal life, she doesn't allow the same to happen to her professional one. there, she is calm, confident, and even cocky. she knows her worth in that aspect and she is not going to get pushed around.
on the other hand.... yeah, she is a mess in her personal life. she actively goes to find spock to talk to him. which is the last thing she should be doing.
she just faced her feelings, and instead of dealing of processing them on her own, she searches for him. wants that connection she talked about before. so when he says he and t'pring are taking some time apart, and that he has feelings for her (strong, vulcan feelings for her), she doesn't hesitate. she wants it, has been aching for him, so she goes for it. for this chance with him. doesn't think twice about how this can and will hurt her in the future, all the ways that it will go wrong.
christine is self-destructive. she is someone who tends to search for meaningless relationships in order to protect herself from the pain of something like this. something that is real and that if it ends... will leave her with permanent scars.
at the end, she is playing fast and loose with something that she's been trying to hold at bay for ages.
final thoughts.
i honestly loved it. her characterization, the way it deepens her complicated feelings with love, what an excellent officer she is. it was able to cram it all in, without having to do all of it through exposition. we know she is excellent by observing her. we know she is loved, because of the way everyone acts around her. i want more of christine + the girls, and i need to see more of these discoveries she's made in the past year. i want to see christine at work, being excellent. while i love the romance and personal touch of this episode (which i do), seeing her working was possibly my favorite part.
anyways, she needs therapy and i love that for her <3
also the rest of enterprise as well, cause please guys, don't support your best friend to break up an engagement. that's insane. funny as hell, not gonna lie, i love that chaotic energy for them, but pleaseeeee.

Spock's deal as developed over decades:
logical, stoic, superhuman strength, superhuman precision, green blood, pointy ears, scientist, musician, vegetarian, friend to animals, telepath, hippie sympathizer, idealist
has more powerful emotions than humans, so he has to hide them
over years of cold professionalism, forms incredibly deep attachments to coworkers Kirk and Bones, even though their human lifespans are tragically shorter than his own
a complex reflection of an imperfect but remarkable and beloved real person (Nimoy's two biographies are called "I Am Not Spock" and "I Am Spock"); because of this, Spock is famously Jewish-coded and expressed many of Nimoy's strong personal values and creative ideas
historically significant gay interpretation by an important fandom and published writers; in the wider fandom, Spock's sex appeal surpassed the actual lead actor's
he has some romances as a young man, but he ultimately dedicates his life to the noble cause of Romulan reunification
bizarre alien libido on a fuck-or-die 7-year cycle; this silly premise is taken extremely seriously
difficult relationship with his Vulcan father and human mother
complex relationship with Starfleet, especially w/r/t Pike, Kirk, and Romulans
has a secret half-brother who darkly mirrors Spock's own struggles with emotions, forming bonds with other people, and faith in God
sacrifices himself out of pure, logical love and gets reborn through the misuse of a terraformer-turned-superweapon
the platonic ideal of a nerd
In 2009, Spock was recast, but this version is from an alternate timeline. There are two significant changes to the character, which are not as appealing to me, but I still appreciate them:
his homeplanet was destroyed. This enormous tragedy gives us a character who is much less stoic. In my opinion, this takes away from Spock's uniqueness. But as a Star Wars fan, I appreciate that Spock's grief for his planet gets to affect him in a way Leia's never did
he has a relationship with Uhura. This is a fun decision, especially as these characters had some chemistry in the original show, but it is a bit spoiled by the creepy tracking device subplot
This recast is a fundamentally different character. In my opinion the best thing about him is when they lean into that difference; Quinto's Spock knows about Nimoy's, and has profound feelings about his alternate self. This was handled beautifully after Nimoy's death, and I am grateful that his protege's version of the character got to grieve with us in the real world.
In 2019, Spock was recast for a second time, and this version is supposed to be the same character as the original. But they have made multiple changes to the character anyway, which I mostly dislike. I haven't watched SNW since I feel this interpretation of Pike is even more ableist than the 60s version, but I am trying to keep track of what this franchise is doing with their best character:
Spock now has an additional secret sibling, an adopted human sister Michael. The reveal that Sarek chose Spock over Michael for Vulcan Science Academy, which Spock refused anyway, is some fun drama. It makes me feel bad for Michael and angry with Spock, which is a bummer. I do not think we needed to have Trek's first Black woman protagonist anchored by her relationship to a legacy character. I enjoy their dynamic, but I don't see a fundamental mirror of challenging topics with them like I do with him and Sybok. And of course this bond isn't going to be able to influence Spock in the future, as his bond with Sybok will
Spock now also has dyslexia; I appreciate the representation, but again this isn't going to influence him at all in the future; Spock in "The Menagerie" is an ableist character by modern standards
he's in a love triangle with Chapel and T'Pring; to me this is OOC for all three of them, and unnecessarily makes original Spock into a big, insensitive jerk. While he is a passionate character, the whole point is that he controls his passion, even to the point of choosing his love for humanity over his love for individuals. His deep friendship with Kirk and Bones is only possible since they have grown old together, which is the main theme of the original movies
where'd the chest hair go
Peck's interview where he says they're pushing Spoimler and he enjoyed acting with Quaid because they're both from acting families = so this actor's input into this once highly personal character is just queerbaiting and nepotism
The reason I wrote this post is because, in the newest SNW ep (spoilers), Spock becomes somehow humanized and, as a result, happily eats bacon. First of all, "I love bacon" is like, the definition of cringe outdated internet humor. More importantly, this is a nonsensical and possibly offensive move for a character who is Jewish-coded and vegetarian. Vulcans can eat meat, but they choose not to as part of their strict code of ethics. Spock in particular has a deep love for all forms of life, and his telepathy even gives him the ability to understand every creature from the Horta to the whales. Of course Federation meat is synthesized, but, at least in my interpretation, I can't imagine Spock even symbolically enjoying eating one of the smartest animals on Earth.
Of course every beloved character will develop over time, sometimes even in prequels. But these changes ought to make them more complex, or more personal to a new creator. The things that made Spock special are draining away. He is becoming more fashionable, straighter, more ordinary. Most fans seem to enjoy the new version, but I am left reeling at these odd decisions.

Star Trek SNW Headcannons
This is some of my Star Trek Strange New Worlds bullshit. Feel free to scroll, followers. Scroll like the wind!
So far Star Trek: SNW has been the most Heterosexual Star Trek in YEARS. Granted, we're just a bit past halfway through the first season. There's been queer shit mentioned-ish. But compared to DISCO, this series has embraced being the gayest straight show since TOS.
I like it. Don't me wrong. The nostalgia is ON FIRE with this show. I'm just eating it up like a turtle and a strawberry. (Om...nom...fucking nom...)
But my thirst to see my queer fam represented (as well as myself) on screen has lead my brain to turn into a neon rainbow cloud of electricity with one mission: gay everyone. Gay as verb, mind you. I want to gay EVERYONE.
Now, I won't. In my headcannons I'm sure they'll be a token straight character, so don't you worry my little allies.
But I need more queer.
Get ready your hate comments, my sweet lampreys, because I'm about to RUIN some stuff.
Pike: I'm about to start ruining right now. Pike is our token hetero. He's a tried and true ally, but he has a thing for powerful feminine energy. He wants to be RULED. (But what about Spock?? You leave Kirk's bitch out of this!)
Una: Bi. Lusting over La'an. Knowing the chain of command, tho, so not wanting to do anything about it. Probably has had a previous romantic life. Perhaps has a child/children.
La'an: Lusting over Una. Follows the damn rules so same as Una. Repressed emotionally enough to have only had unsuccessful flings. Is too intimidating for most, even the butchest among them. Loves women but doesn't need your fucking labels because she's so out of touch with her romantic side that she doesn't even think about it.
Ortegas: Ace/Demi (that's right, AT ME). She is passionate as hell. She is friend. She is queer platonic with Chapel. She is loving some garlic bread and cake. She is tired of your bullshit.
Spock: Pan. I mean, if he's gonna be bi (which he totally is) it would be just as logical to be pan because there are so many expressions of gender and spectrums of anatomical and genetic sexual characteristics...why limit? Fascinating. He also has a crush on everyone all the time. Polyam as well because ¿Por qué no dos?
Chapel: Thinks she needs a man but really she just needs a family. She's in so many queer platonics she has trading cards. She likes sex. If anything she is pan. But she thinks she wants to settle down. Pines for one person while not realizing she actually wants everyone. Also has a kink for aliens. Would never tell anyone she's sweet on Hemmer. But who wouldn't be?
M'Benga: Complicated. His love is focused on his daughter currently. His energy is taken by figuring out how to save her. No time for relationships other than the platonic family ones he's making with the crew or professional specialists he's working with to treat her. He's a sweet cinnamon roll and I hope they give him happiness. I'd want him on my side. Fierce love, that one.
Hemmer: My love! Hemmer! Hello, dear! He's super gay. Has an Andorian low-key partner he connects with daily on another starship (Shran story influence). They joke about how Starfleet tries to spread the aliens out to every ship and that's why they've never been assigned together. They're casual because neither have the emotional resources to dedicate to each other in a committed way. But neither one are too invested in seeking out other partners either. Both have traumatic backstories where they are rejected by their family units. I even have his partner's name. Etnar. Also, Etnar's a botanist.
Uhura: Super into other cultures, she is super pan. Everything is open to her. She wants to know. She has compassion. Her relationships have been strong and passionate. But she is still wandering before settling down. She is focused on what's in front of her, not the future. Crushes? Oh yeah. Like Christine she can't help but find everyone so attractive but also so interesting. She doesn't know if she'll ever feel like she truly belongs but she wants to make the MOST of her time! I just can't wait to see where they take her. And unlike the other characters, I really don't need to see her in a relationship. She is a such a full character already. I just want to see what she accomplishes!
Kirk: You think I'd pass up Sammy? Nah. He's curious. He'll try anything once. He defies labels. He just does things for the sake of doing them. He gets hurt. He gets up. He tries someone else. Ends up in a surprisingly stable relationship. Probably with an androgynous alien without the definitions of sex and gender that we have. They're very happy together.

Note
Kirk: *kicks open the chapel/courtroom doors*
Bones: We object!
Chekhov: we don't know if that's how it works here
Uhura: We object anyway!
Spock and MC: *smooching it up*
Kirk, in the middle of being pained by psychic powers: *slides Bones some credits*
Bones: *splits it with Uhura*
MC: *unleashes their wrath upon the court*
Spock, off to the side: (am I... attracted to this?)
MC: Spock... Were those truly your feelings for me?
Spock: yes. I apologize if they were unwanted-
(sounds of a struggle from behind the door as Kirk struggles to hold back Bones from throttling Spock and Checkov tries to stop Uhura from smashing their faces together like two Barbies bc goddamnit if these two morons start moving backwards after finally making progress-)
This is so funny and so absolutely true! Uhura and Bones and Kirk definitely had money on all of this and Bones was definitely ready to start smacking Spock for not saying anything earlier

78 Great Things in Ghosts of Illyria (Part 1)
Star Trek Strange New Worlds season one episode three... such great writing and character moments for the entire cast I had to split the post into two ---- > Part Two
Strange New Worlds | Children of the Comet | Ghosts of Illyria Part 1 & Part 2 | Memento Mori | Spock Amok | Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach | Serene Squall | The Elysian Kingdom | All Those Who Wander | A Quality of Mercy
TIL ion storms extend into outer space and are not just concentrated in the atmosphere of the planet
OH MY GOD THE LEATHER JACKETS ARE SO COOL they are so cool they are so cool
Idk why, but I really enjoy the beam up triangle formation everyone stands in
The way everyone pauses as the lights flicker during the auxilliary power transfer and then continue about their business
"I am a genius. Move quickly."
Spock losing himself in the Illyrian journals not realizing the ion storm is upon them
Spock's fancy little bag that's the exact right shape for the Illyrian archive tubes
The frustration and disappointment of Chief Kyle and Number One as they realize they won't be able to get Spock and Pike off the surface
Number One pep talk for the bridge crew so they don't freak out over the captain and science officer being stuck on the planet
Number One in command mode - I just want more of this, I love seeing her in action
"Whatever tweaks your freak, pal." The whole exchange between Ortegas and Ensign Lance is gold 😂😂😂
Ortegas' danger meter goes from whatever tweaks your freak to calling for security on deck 14 (to be fair, Lance head-butted the wall panel)
Oh no. I think I might--oh no.
Please ignore me, I think my sexuality is now Number One ripping open her uniform shirt 😱
"I'm okay." <-- this is the first time she has ever not been cool and composed. Whatever just happened has shaken her up
Skeptical!M'Benga
In the future there are devices that can draw blood from your upper arm through your clothes
Engineering troubleshooting! Including a nice explanation for the way the biofilters work
Inquisitive Number One and Grumpy Hemmer is always a win
"I can sense that expression you know."
Ugh, level 5 diagnostics are the worst, you're so right, Hemmer
Number One is worried at this point and Uhura is very perceptive and definitely notices after they make brief contact with Pike
La'An calling Number One Chief - I want to know the back story on that
"I never think of you as a child."
And La'An is related to Khan - that Khan
"Is this the only light you have?" 😂😂😂 Like it's a bar and she doesn't like the beer on tap
La'An is not moving or awake at all from this point up until almost the end of the episode which means they sedated her early which means she was a pain in the ass to get to sickbay 😂
It is so sexy to see someone in power ask a doctor for advice and then…. take. the. goddamn. doctor's. advice. That is all.
Hemmer just snaps his fingers and they all go to their little lockdown work areas - beautiful
"You are deliberately mixing my metaphor in order to indulge your anxiety."
The plasma Illyrians remind me of the space ghosts from Titan AE and I am not mad about it
Lower deck quarters! I see three bunks but there would possibly be room for a fourth depending on how the room is shaped. I like the fancy bunks.
Number One hopping on to the biobed next to Uhura and casually asking her if she's doing anything right now 😂😂😂
Spock reminding Pike he's not human and also suggesting they weight probability in their favor
Uhura trying not to freak out that the first officer is lying in her bed
Number One figuring out how the virus is spreading
M'Benga's awe and frustration with the revelation that the virus travels on the electromagnetic spectrum
Nurse Chapel looking out for her patients when Number One suggests doing a shipwide blackout to go along with the lockdown
Oh man, watching all of the lights go out on the ship from the exterior is SO COOL
To be continued!

🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them: Christine Chapel, if you've got one. Tommy boy if you don't.
💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?
Thank you for asking these questions, @grissomesque! 💕
🧠 Christine Chapel
Something I headcanon for Christine Chapel is that her relationships with other women are important to her, whether that’s shore leave with Ortegas (SNW), literal hugs and kisses for Uhura (TOS), or knowing details like what Ilia liked to wear (TMP). All of those can go romantic or platonic, but choosing to see a centrality of women for a character whose plotline can often be Spock-adjacent (and don’t get me wrong, I ship SNW Chapel/Spock) really resonates for me for Chapel.
💔 A fic of mine that broke my heart
A fic of mine that immediately came to mind in terms of breaking my heart is War Torn, a Kathryn Janeway and Miles O’Brien friendship story set during the Cardassian War. The fic answers some questions (that I had) about key commonalities between the two characters, as well as the power and importance of a truly great captain.
Please ask me questions from the Fanfic Writer Emoji Ask Game. It’s fun! 💕
