A different flavour of Darkelf
Artsource
Anyone who's played eldenring knows that the subterrnaian stretches of the map are some of the coolest regions ever created for the franchise: ancient cities built into the walls of caverns vast beyond imagining, all lit by an eerie phosphorescence that one could easily mistake for innumerable stars. There are many creatures the underground, from priests of melted clay to shamanistic hulks that revere the budding of horns.... but most interesting to us today are the Nox, secretive worshipers of the night sky banished beneath the earth.
I couldn't help but be struck by how cool the Nox were, and how great they'd be as an alternative take on drow, still maintaining some of the darkelf hallmarks but providing a lot of fresh elements. Now, I'vealready posted my general take on the drow, but since I'm doing a 'soulslike roleplaying' project at the moment ya'll are going to have to indulge me as I've got Elden ring on the brain.
Here's some random Nox lore for you to pilfer for your own campaign:
The Nox once lived on the surface world and worshipped the moon, stars, and night sky, but were forced underground when a new order emerged and declared them heretics for failing to bend the knee. This was not a slow process: when challenged the Nox invented a weapon that could kill the destiny controlling god of their enemy and in retribution that enemy smote their cities underground by divine edict. The surviving Nox were rightly pissed about this and have been working through the ages to take their revenge.
You can tell you're in Nox territory because of the false night sky decorating the cavern ceilings, such is their love for the stars. Their culture is theocratic and matriarchal, dedicated to preserving the rites and traditions of their once great era. Much of their teachings are based around waiting for a so called "lord of night" one who will bring about their promised return to the surface and an end to their exile. Sadly because their enemy controls fate and has halted the progression of the stars, this lord will never arrive to overturn the status quo, leaving the Nox in theological limbo.
One of the many mystical traditions guarded by the Nox is the creation of life through the manipulation of alchemical quicksilver, primarily a servant species known as the albinorics. These homonculi come in different shapes but are consigned to much of the drugework in Nox territory, and are reliant on their creators to keep their bodies from degrading. One faction of the Nox have even attempted to create their supposed night lord through the use of this silver tear alchemy, and if that doesn't strike you as a fasinating questhook I don't know what will.
Another of the silverwrought gifts of Nox alchemy is to be reborn in a new shape, a trick most Nox use to prolong their lifespans through the ages but some utilize as a means of infiltration, detectable only by the fact that those who are reborn bleed silver. This of course only adds to the surface dweller's paranoia over the Nox, of whom they only usually encounter wandering alchemists, strange mystics, and plotting assassins.

Her life was completely upended in early November of 2018, amid one of the driest autumns on record in the Sierra Nevada, when the deadly Camp Fire swept into her hometown of Paradise, Calif., killing 85 people and destroying nearly 19,000 structures — the most expensive climate-related disaster in the world that year. "There are positives," she says. "My family got out alive." But Foudray's family home, a two-bedroom two-bath mobile, was a total loss. Five years later, she's still mostly living in an RV on her burned-out lot, hoping to get a new home within the next year.
[...] In the weeks and months immediately after the Camp Fire, survivors were anxious to get home. They soon became frustrated, angry about the slow pace of even just removing the fire debris. Then as the months dragged on, the scope of what was ahead began to settle in. It took nine months just to remove all the hazardous toxins and debris piles before the first homes could be rebuilt. Paradise's recovery had a lot stacked against it from the beginning due to its largely elderly and low-income population. Many were forced to leave in search of affordable housing.
[...] Originally built out into dense forests, Paradise today is a changed land. One million trees have been removed; the coastal range to the west and Sawmill Peak and the Sierra foothills to the east are now visible. Roads are being newly paved or reconfigured and blocked by flaggers. Utility crews are digging trenches and burying all the new power lines underground. And main thoroughfares are clogged with construction traffic. All the new homes have to meet tougher wildfire codes, including a new local ordinance that bans any porches or other fixtures built from combustible materials in the immediate perimeter of houses.
[...] This costs a lot of money. And it turns out a lot of the aid coming into disaster areas — like the millions pouring into Lahaina right now — tends to go to rebuilding infrastructure, not individual private homes. "We're not good at this in our country," says Ed Mayer, executive director of the Housing Authority for Butte County, which includes Paradise. "Our history of disasters, and no fault of their own, FEMA sort of has a one size fits all approach." The U.S. government typically comes in and tries to help people find temporary housing quickly while disaster victims figure out how to rebuild. But Mayer says that doesn't work in states like California and Hawaii where there has been a worsening affordable housing crisis for years. "Our wish at the very outset of this disaster was, hey, we want some soap bubble housing," Mayer says. "And when I say soap bubble housing, we want some housing we can erect tomorrow."
Still, five years later, Mayer's office is celebrating some successes. There are some 3,000 affordable housing units now in development in the county, thanks in large part to housing officials leveraging aid and various grants. Most are not in Paradise, however, and officials say it's probably a fraction of what's actually needed. In the days after the fire, an estimated 35,000 displaced people flooded into nearby cities like Chico.

Fallout's Electrical Grids
Inspired by Any Austin's videos on GTA IV & V (go watch them), I decided to map the path of every electrical pylon in Fallout 3, New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76. It was an interesting experience that was sometimes fun and sometimes really dull and boring.
Now, these maps aren't full depictions of the electrical grid - I don't include utility poles for the most part (because there's too many and when I tried it was incredibly boring and dull) or underground cables (because I don't know whether or not they exist). But it does include the electrical pylons, which should give some interesting information about where power is coming from and how it's routed throughout the world.
The Capital Wasteland's Electrical Grid:
The pylons in FO3 are interesting - they're a lot more sporadic in their placement, but they're also pretty fun to follow. Also, almost every line was connected to a substation, which is neat. Fallout 3 also explicitly states that most of the power lines for DC are underground, so it's plausible that some of these lines could just go underground when they end, rather than just stopping.
The Mojave Wasteland's Electrical Grid:
New Vegas was honestly a little bit boring to do an electrical survey for. It was mostly just one long line of pylons going across a flat desert, so I found myself very bored while mapping this one. But regardless, it was interesting to see that the pylons form an *almost* complete line, with the exception of a few spots that don't connect.
Also, for New Vegas, I mapped out the utility poles of the world as well, mainly because the pylons didn't give much interesting information. Interestingly, the only utility pole that got anywhere near a substation (where they'd normally hook up to) was a short line nearby the Nevada Winds Solar Farm.
Fun fact, New Vegas also has the only clear indication of underground cables that I was able to find in any of the games. The El Dorado Substation has wires leading directly into the ground facing Helios One, and the substation attached to Helios One's power plant also has lines leading into the ground, facing the El Dorado. It's a neat detail! That's what the squiggly line between Helios One and the El Dorado Substation is meant to portray.
The Commonwealth's Electrical Grid
Fallout 4 was a bit disappointing - there were only 2 pylon lines in the whole Commonwealth, I expected there to be more. The main line at the top starts outside of the map near Sanctuary Hills and goes all the way to an unmarked destroyed power plant nearby County Crossing, where it just kinda... stops.
The other line at the bottom starts at an unmarked substation (which also has a Deathclaw v Behemoth fight) and goes into the Glowing Sea before unceremoniously ending in a single destroyed pylon, with no visible continuation of the line.
I did also start mapping out the utility poles for the Commonwealth like I did for the Mojave, but I got bored because there's a lot more and the Commonwealth is a lot bigger.
Appalachia's Electrical Grid

(You'll have to zoom in to see any detail, since 76's map is very big.)
This one was my favorite electrical grid survey to do, because 76's world is just so damn cool and well made. It's also very cool to see that 76 has the most accurate electrical infrastructure in the entire series! There are 3 pylon lines in Appalachia, each connecting to 3 different power plants across the regions, as well as multiple substations along the routes. Doubly interesting, the utility poles also actually connect to the substations, which is a first!
I was very impressed with the level of detail in 76's world, there's so many little details, like how in the forested regions, the area beneath the pylon wires is actually cleared out, like they are in real life. It was just cool to see the developers actually pay attention to that kind of thing, along with the aforementioned utility poles connecting to the substations.
Conclusion
Now, you may ask, "Why did you do this?" And my answer is, because I thought it'd be neat and I didn't have anything better to do. You might also ask, "What did we learn from this?", to which my answer is basically nothing but hey, at least we reaffirmed that Fallout 76 still has the best world map of the games.

♥️♣️ Royalty AU Headcanons ♠️♦️
Hello tumblr! It's been a hot while, but I've returned with a real nice treat for ya! That treat being around 3,500 words of headcanons for
✨W o r l d b u i l d i n g ✨
Now, I know, neonross, the creator and rightful owner of this lovely, lovely AU has already done some worldbuilding and in no way am I trying to disrespect that or anything! Their word obviously comes first!
I just thought it would be fun to come up with some worldbuilding headcanons for the four kingdoms. ^^; So yeah, this entirely for funsies and only my personal take on this, so keep that in mind please.
Now, please enjoy!
♣️The Queendom of Clubs ♣️
Let's start with Julie's kingdom!
♣️Geography & Flora
Pretty sure it's been stated that Julie's queendom is mostly underground in a ginormous cave system. Let's keep that! I think it would be cool if the caves are mainly of the lush kind, with lots of moss, flowers and giant mushrooms. How do plants thrive underground with no light? By making their own light. That's right baby, we're talking bioluminescence all the way! In general I would paint the flora (and later fauna) as the most fantastical out of the four kingdoms. ^^ Everything is just colorful and gleaming with light of its own creation, making the Club's caves a truly dreamlike experience. In terms of geographical location, I would put Clubs into the south east corner of the map. And it's faaar in the south, we're talking tropical climate on the surface with a huge jungle taking up most of the land. Meanwhile in the caves below it's much cooler and more temperate.
♣️Fauna
As stated the animals in this queendom are also very fantastical. From glowing moths and butterflies to phoenix like birds in all sorts of colors. I also like to think that they don't have horses down there to ride on, instead utilizing sturdy, deer-like creatures. Or as an alternative, maybe even something akin to oversized mountain-goats to scale the cave walls. And their local dragon species is veeery tiny and cute. Their scales are shimmery like the feathers of hummingbirds. When they shed, their scales are used to make jewelry! That's why they are called Gem Dragons. I think their size is somewhere between a hummingbird and a beetle.
♣️Architecture
Space and real estate is valuable in a cave. And a lot of it is needed to keep up with farming food and producing all things needed for the citizens. To deal with this issue buildings are anchored in the ceiling! The way they're built makes them look like upside down towers. The oldest buildings however, including the royal castle and capital, are carved straight out of the walls and stalagmites. (Are those the spikeys that hang from the ceiling? Or was it stalagtites? I can never remember-) Buildings are connected by walkways and bridges instead of streets. They make for an interesting, multi layered maze for navigation, just like the caves. :)
♣️Culture and Politics
Surely you noticed I called the Kingdom of Clubs a Queendom instead. For good reason! I like to think that their societal structure is inherently matriarchal since the very beginning. There only ever have been queens, Julie is no exception. Perhaps that is why her brother Jonesy opted to be a musician instead? The people of Clubs are inherently different from the other kingdoms in general, because of their origins. They're Rainbow Monsters after all! With horns and tails and all sorts of vibrant colorations! Evolutionwise their women have always been the taller and stronger ones, hence the matriarchal society. It's mainly women in important positions as well, however that doesn't mean that men aren't respected in their own ways. More in general I would say the people of Clubs are bubbly and cheerful and very open and approachable. Just like their queen! The Queendom of Clubs has established a consistent trading system with the Kingdom of Diamonds, since they're direct neighbors. Clubs mainly sends off jewelery and other minerals from underground, as well as the occasional batch of medicine that can only be made from their fantastical plant-life, to be sold in Diamonds and receive money, fruits and foods from the surface and sea as well as paper, books, tools and wood. Overall relationship to Diamonds and Hearts is relaxed and friendly. Spades is... Currently a mystery. It used to be hostile in the past, but since the last king was recently assassinated, Clubs is apprehensive towards Spades. They will stand back and carefully observe the further developments in Spades.
♣️Magic
Clubs magic stems from their ability to nurture and their empathy. Hence why it is closely connected to the living world around them. They're able to manipulate or summon plants, let them grow, reshape or wither. They can also talk to animals (and flowers, but only the very skilled ones can) and easily gain their help or trust.
♣️Royal Colors
Pastel Pink and Silver. (The crest of the Queendom of Clubs is the only one that changes with every ruler. Since the royal family consist of Rainbow Monsters, each new queen always chooses her favorite color. The accents however will always stay silver)
♣️National Instrument
Crystallophone. (They sound ETHEREAL! Fight meh-)
♦️The Kingdom of Diamonds♦️
Frankie's kingdom! Yaay!
♦️Geography & Flora
Diamonds is the direct neighbor of Clubs, just east of it. Sitting in the south east corner of the map, its climate is also tropical. So yes, the flora is mainly your typical jungle and palm trees in the coastal regions. BUT! The overall vibe of the civilization in Diamonds is French. Don't ask me how that fits together with a jungle - Idk either - but it does now. XD In the north (just like Clubs, but I didn't mention it until now, whoops-) Diamonds borders on the Sea of Suits, an ocean that divides Diamonds and Clubs from Hearts and Spades, but isn't too big, so the four kingdoms still feel united enough to be the Lands of Suits. The flora in Diamonds is tropical, we're talking exotic fruits, giant evergreen trees and foliage that fights to take over everything. The coast is mainly lined with beautiful white beaches and coral reefs, with the occasional proper port of a town or city sticking out into the sea. I think the weather is comparable to the one we find around our equator. The sun rises exactly at 6am and sets punctual as ever at 6pm. It also rains every day from twelve to 3pm at usually the exact same time day in, day out. I think Frankie likes this kind of predictability. :3
♦️Fauna
In such a warm and humid climate, all kinds of critters simply thrive. From creepy crawlies to frogs, other bugs and butterflies, the wildlife in Diamonds is rich in diversity. (And so is their cuisine 😭). It also feeds into their king's obsession to study as many critters and plants as possible. But beware, the jungle also houses predators like snakes, tigers or jaguars or panthers (which are... essentially just melanistic jaguars, but shhhh-). Thank goodness there's all types of pretty birds to distract us from them! The local dragon species are basically Butterfly Dragons. Yep, four-legged, chitin-armored dragons with very beautiful and elaborate butterfly wings. They are quite peaceful herbivores, which only adds to their charm. They're not super big, not much bigger than the people, I'd say.
♦️Architecture
Oh boy, now we fully dive into the French inspired aspect, especially the Baroque style and historical phase. You know these beautiful castles and gardens and towns, planned and designed with utmost care and precision and decorated into absolute oblivion. Everything feels grand and opulent, no wall or pillar is left without trim, windows are made from beautiful stained glass and ceilings are adorned with murals. (The murals are mostly made by Hearts artists.) Towns and especially the capital are filled to the brim with culture of high class. You will typically find museums, libraries, institutes and other educational establishments, as well as opera houses and theaters.
♦️Culture and Politics
Ahhh yes, the court of Diamonds. Probably the largest and most complicated structure-wise out of all four kingdoms. Intruige and corruption sadly are quite common, so are secret messages hidden in gifts or the way a fan is waved. Sadly the court is also quite conservative when it comes to homosexuality, hence why there has been an assassination attempt on Frankie. They're also making it difficult for Frank to legalize same-sex marriage. (Bastards-) For the main public, the craze for fashion runs high. Everyone tries to copy their favorite noble, trying to achieve the unrealistic body goal of tiny waists, or wearing powdered wigs and only the most elaborate clothes they can afford. Even the men wear make-up, to cover up any imperfections or wear heels for extra height. Strong perfumes are also adored by many. (How beautifully hypocritical, isn't it?) When it comes to trading, Diamonds likes to trade off any excess fruit and foods they have, since they are viewed as exotic delicacies by the other nations. However they are mainly known for selling wisdom. Teachers, researchers and professors from the Diamonds Kingdom are highly sought after and considered the best in the Lands of Suits. They are paid fortunes just to travel to other kingdoms and teach there.
♦️Magic
Diamonds magic is closely tied to their intellect. Therefore it is much like alchemy, a craft that must be meticulously studied in order to be mastered. With their scientific magic they're able to do just about anything. With this magic being considered "artificial" however, what it can achieve is ultimately limited by the understanding of reality of its users. If you think something is impossible, then it most likely will be. In addition to that, it will also have a negative physical effect if overused. Starting with bodily aches and nosebleeds, the symptoms may also get as severe as life-threatening seizures, brain hemorrhaging or heart attacks.

♥️The Kingdom of Hearts♥️
Time for our Wallyyyyyyy!
♥️Geography & Flora
North of the Sea of Suits lies the Kingdom of Hearts. It is the biggest of the four kingdoms and lies in a Mediterranean climate. Still warm, but not as warm as Clubs or Diamonds.Flora and landscape would be reminiscent of irl Italy and Spain. With sunny, rooling hills covered by vinyards, olive tree orchards or apple orchards! The coastal region is mainly flat with the occasional forest. The further north you get, the thicker and more common forests become. The ground also gets hillier/ more mountainy the further north you go. But the actual mountains mark the border to the Spades Kingdom. More on that later.
♥️Fauna
Pretty basic, to be honest. Deer and boars and bears out in the wild, many common birds as well, as well as swans, wild geese, ducks and peacocks! The Kingdom of Hearts is also known for its extensive cattle farming. They've got looots of cows. (I love cows-) Besides cattle they also have your classic farm animals like pigs, chickens, geese, etc. And they're also famous for their horse ranches. Their horses are the sturdiest and most magestic ones. Maybe like Friesians? Y'know, stature wise between a draft horse and a normal one with nice, flowy manes and feathered hooves- Oh right, their local dragons- Almost forgot about those, whoops. They got the typical, fire-breathing High Westerns. Four legged, scaled, winged beasts that like to collect hoards. They come in a variety of colors, the most common one being red. They start out small when they're young and continue to grow larger and larger the older they get. They never stop growing. :) That's why occasionally the knights of the kingdom set out to hunt them.
♥️Architecture
Typical Mediterranean architecture with a touch of fantasy ornamentation. Simplistic white or cream colored facades, adorned by colorful shutters and the occasional vine growing on it. Roofs are made with these typical red shingels. Windows can be arched and occasionally have stained glass even in common buildings. Many homes have terraces too. Only the royal palace is a bit of an exception, exceeding in elegance and complexity, with tall towers, sleek as spires, grand halls and generous gardens. Its a work of art, created by multiple generations of Wally's anchestors. Its decorations took inspiration from the Kingdom of Diamonds, although they don't quite reach their abundance. You could say it looks more balanced.
♥️Culture and Politics
Ohhh the people of Hearts... So full of soul and... Heart. If you know what I mean. They certainly know how to enjoy live, whatever they choose to do, they do it with passion, pouring their all into it. They are energetic, flamboyant, charismatic and firey! Very in touch with their emotions (and open about them) too! Typically. The people of Hearts are also artists through and through, just like their king. Be it literature, poetry, sculpting or painting or anything else that is considered creative, it is probably a wide spread hobby in the Kingdom of Hearts. So is dancing too, actually! It is quite common for people of communities (Families, villages, neighborhoods in towns) to come together at the end of a day and celebrate together. Fast-paced, cheerful music is played and couples engage in wild dances similar to flamenco or tango. Meanwhile foods and drinks are provided by everyone, for everyone. Oftentimes there's no real reason for these spontaneous festivals; sometimes it's simply the good weather and a good mood. As I said, the people of Hearts just love to enjoy life. Their fashion is also heavily inspired by traditional Spanish clothes. They are sooo pretty! Especially the flamenco dresses! <3 I also like to think that they hold "siestas". Hmm, onto politics- The Court of Hearts is your classic medival type of court. Nothing to special to say about it here. ^^ Hearts frequently trades with Clubs and Diamonds, mainly selling art, creative services and livestock. Hearts used to be at war with Spades not too long ago. They fought over dominance in the Lands of Suits, since they both used to be equally as influental. But now Hearts clearly rules over all and has Spades pay large sums of reparations to this day. The war ended just a few decades ago and was fought by Queen Ambrosia (Wally's mom) and the late King of Spades. Needles to say, now that said king was recently assassinated, Hearts is very worried about the future, because the new ruler has yet to reveal themselves and who knows if they're insane or not?
♥️Magic
Hearts magic is tied to their emotions! Pretty sure neonross mentioned something about the people of Hearts having that "will" that allows them superhuman speed and strength. So let's honor that! Their magic is tied to their inner going ons, so basically their will to. And it mainly helps them to alter their physical abilities and also give them new ones. Like short bursts of flight, the ability to attack with fire, freeze with ice or whatever else you can imagine yourself doing with your emotions.
♥️Royal Colors
Red and gold, of course <3
♥️National Instrument
Guitar (For those firey Spanish guitar solos, babey!)
♠️The Queendom of Spades ♠️
Ohhh, buckle up! NOW things get interesting!
♠️Geography & Flora
Up north in the mountains and foggy highlands lies the Queendom of Spades. Not much grows up ther in the cold and rugged weather aside from grass, moss pines and the occasional berry bush. For inspiration I'm thinking Scotland, Sweden and Norway. <3 It's beautiful in a wild way only these nordic/celtic/gaelic regions can achieve. And it's equally as moody, the skies are often overcast. Being so far in the north the Queendom of Spades doesn't really experience your typical four seasons how we may know them. They experience polar day and night! And the northern lights if you're lucky. ;)
♠️Fauna
Unlike the plant life, there's variety in the animals. All as hardy as the people there. In terms of wildlife you have a smaller species of deer, caribou, wild sheep and mountain goats. Common predators out there are wolves and mountain lions. In terms of livestock, Spades mainly breeds sheep and goats, but they also have chickens and Highland Cattle. (These are fucking cute-) Their livestock is very important to them, because the animals and their products are their main food source. Spades' horses are smaller than Hearts' horses, but they are nimbler and a lot more robust. The dragons in Spades are your classic Wyverns. Stone-colored, spiked reptiles with impressive wings. They're very intelligent and live in groups in the mountains. They breathe fire too and can shoot spikes from their tails and backs. Wyverns are about double the size of a horse and the people of Spades used to deal with them by taming them. And riding them of course. After the war, Hearts strictly prohibited this practice however. Much to the new queen's dismay.
♠️Architecture
In Spades function mainly comes over form. With the exeption of important buildings that is. Buildings are either constructed out of wood or stone. The bigger and more important a building is, the higher the chance is it's made of stone. So your typical village contains of viking style wooden houses and a longhouse/shieldhall with a stone foundation in the center. The royal castle is made entirely of stone, naturally. It's shape language is very square, very rough. Very fortified too, with high walls and only one entry and exit point. It sits at the edge of a steep mountain, sourrounded by high cliffs. It was built with the purpose of being a fortress first and foremost. But now that Queen Raena (Rah-Ena, yes she's my OC. If you want me to yap about her, lmk) has taken the throne, she's trying to turn it into a home as well.
♠️Culture and Politics
Spades culture is reminiscent of the one vikings once used to have. The royal court is much smaller and simpler than the other three, with most of it's members being equals aside from the queen of course. Instead of nobles or noble families, Spades is divided into clans. (This is more of a Scottish aspect. Just want want to have it pointed out for clarity.) Clans are typically one large family and all share the same last name. The clans aren't divided into different social classes, but they are constantly competing for dominance and influence throughout the kingdom. Each clan has one "Head of the Clan", a leader, who will automatically become council member in the royal shield hall. Head of the clan is either the eldest or strongest family member, depending on what is valued more by each clan, strength or experience. For those who believe in strength, the royal family included, it is a perfectly acceptable and legal practice to beat your leader in a duel or outright kill them to earn their place. That's all I'm gonna say. :) In general the people of Spades are as rough around the edges as the land around them. They seem a little cold and closed off towards outsiders, but towards their kin or anyone who managed to melt the ice, they have the capacity to be caring and well meaning. Unfortunatley they are not good at talking, especially when it comes to feelings. They're also quite prideful and stubborn, often getting stuck on ideals or beliefs even if they don't benefit them. That's what got them into the war in the first place :,)
♠️Magic
Spades magic is deeply entangled with their pride and anger. Therefore it is either protective or very destructive in it's nature. It runs especially strong in the royal bloodline, granting its weilders the ability to shapeshift into a more monstrous version of themselves. How that 'monstrous' side of them manifests depends entirely on the individual. And the weilder, who is not in control of their anger is therefore not in control of their monstrous version.
♠️Royal Colors
Purple and Silver.
♠️National Instrument
Fuck it: Bagpipes. (I love bagpipes. Bagpipes sound amazing imo-)

“…right. It doesn’t seem like your dearest Karga will be coming anytime soon. Not in his own at least. And as much as that won’t change anything for me I must admit that I will feel… guilty about hurting those who were his friend who treated me well. So I have decided to help you to the best of my ability to get him Back.”
[The shepherdess sighs, before pulling out a piece of paper, and begins to draw a field onto it, with a map in the corner. It doesn’t make any sense]
“I know it’s not very helpful but it’s the best I can do to map the ever expanding plains that is Away for you. It’s a field of long grass, depending on the season you’re in it might have spring flowers, usually wildflowers of some sort. It’s always got hills for what seems like miles and miles ahead of you. Think the ideal countryside but stretch it out for as far as the eye can see. That’s what it’s like. Once you manage to get there, resort assured you’re going to find him. You may get lost but nobody can hide there. That’s all I can really say. Best of luck, Cass. For what it works, I hope you find what you need.” - the shepherdess @basra-of-the-crows
"O...kay?" Cass takes the map, confused. "I'll see what I can do."
Cass visits any wide open fields they can find in the real world, making sure to check off those places to start. Upon exhausting every real world field that they have the motivation to check, they decide to try something else.
Cass's Spiral Zone looks -to them at least- like when you clip out of a map and can see all of the outlines of buildings and npcs above you. To anyone else, it's a basic Spiral Zone. That's how they navigate to places. Therefore, when they spot what is essentially a blip in that map that looks like an out of place large field, they're a little more confident that this might be the place.
Cass keeps an eye out above them while taking a winding detour through the part of the Spiral Zone that starts to look like an underground utility tunnel. Looking for any people in this blip, they eventually spot a sole figure, "Oh, there we go. This is... probably right. And if it isn't, oh well."

Hi! Feel free to delete this ask if dm agony aunt stuff isnt your cup of tea, but I would be very interested in your take.
It's probably not ideal that as a long time dnd player I've never played through a traditional dungeon, but I'm running a campaign right now and part of it in my plans involves a nice long dungeon crawl. As a dungeon enjoyer, what (in your opinion) are the key things (mechanics, design ideals, structural choices, etc) that turn a mere room-by-room sequence of combats into a dungeon?
No problem at all, I enjoy answering questions like this! :)
So based on a quick read I assume that you will probably want to run this dungeon as mostly having combat encounters. That's not bad by any means, because especially in more modern editions of D&D combat is pretty much the most rewarding form of gameplay, but to one part of making a good dungeon is to make sure that it isn't just a succession of combat encounters! In my opinion one of the things that makes a dungeon come alive is giving its inhabitants at least some motivations, provided they are thinking and feeling creatures and not like mindless creatures or creatures motivated purely by hunger or hatred of the living. The goblins should not attack the party because you planned a goblin encounter, but because the goblins are defending their home!
It's entirely okay to prep a dungeon where you expect many of the challenges to be combat challenges, but especially when it comes to intelligent inhabitants of the dungeon you should consider their wants and needs and how the adventurers might play these various factions of the dungeon against each other!
A dungeon should have multiple pathways for the group to explore, but the party should also be able to make informed decisions. A T-intersection leading to two identical doors is not giving the characters an informed choice. A side path in the dungeon leading deeper underground and with the smell of offal emanating from it while the path ahead of them has the sound of rushing water coming from it is giving them an informed decision.
Finally, a good dungeon utilizes locks and keys but not all of them have to be actual locks nor actual keys. You want to lean into the infinite possibility space and reward unorthodox solutions. An endless chasm that divides the dungeon into two is a lock with multiple keys, including flight, teleportation, or even just a character who can jump over the chasm. Characters should be able to pick open locks or use a knock spell on a lock to open a shortcut and only later, while searching the other, unlocked branch discover a goblin with a key, making the players go ook ook and point at the map.
It's also okay to just put in an obstacle that's impassable or that you don't have an actual solution planned for. And then watch your players still come up with a way for the party to pass it, via a combination of engaging with the fiction and utilizing system mastery. That shit owns.
So yeah: give the inhabitants of the dungeon motivations beyond just wanting to kill the characters, allow the party to navigate this web of factions, provide informed choices with multiple different paths, utilize locks and keys, and plan out obstacles with no preplanned solution and just let the party come up with their own solution.
