Unnamed Orkney van Signatory Vintage Mogen we zeggen dat dit een Highland Park is? Ons gezond verstand (en trouwens ook de landkaart van Schotland)  zegt ons dat dit slechts 2 distilleerderijen zouden kunnen zijn. De woeste eilanden van Orkney, helemaal in het Noorden van Schotland, huisvesten enkel Scapa en Highland Park. Bij het ruiken én proeven weten we genoeg. De naam van de distilleerderij mag niet vermeld worden, but who cares… Dit is topwhisky! Het betreft een single cask, slechts 342 flessen, en op een vatsterkte van 56,2% gebotteld. En dat door onafhankelijk bottelaar Signatory Vintage en deel van hun Un-chillfiltered Collection. 13 jaar oud, in 2018 gebotteld, en komende uit de warehouses van Signatory, speciaal voor enkele whiskyshops uit België. Een heerlijke neus komt ons tegemoet. Ja nu weten we het zeker dit moet Highland Park zijn. Vinden we dat erg? Nee hoor, integendeel! Bij het ruiken is hij grassig, waxy, met zachte kruiden. En die typische peat uit het Noorden. Als we proeven is hij nog steeds lekker waxy, zoals uit de neus bleek. Minerale tonen en houtachtig. Tropisch fruitig en wat zoutig op het einde. De finish is rokerig, met wat honing en vanille en duurt zeer lang… Dit is puur genot hoor! Will it be unlucky 13 for the Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar? We shall have to see what the equinely-monikered Shetland Reel has to offer in its “Batch 3″ blended malt!

Actually, Shetland refers to an archipelago that seems to me to be the northern-most part of Scotland. These islands are a full 80 kilometres north of Orkney, which is itself considered pretty far north. The Shetland Reel is also the name of a dance that is indigenous to the islands, though I haven’t seen anything to suggest why the company would be named after the dance. 

It was exactly a year ago when I first experienced Shetland Reel as part of the 3rd SWAC. Their first batch was a foothold into the whisky world, combining product from Islay, the HIghlands, and Speyside. It was pretty decent! Since then, Shetland Reel has won some awards for their gin, redesigned their bottles, and evidently tried a second batch of blended malt that was limited to 1,800 bottles. That was a 47% ABV product, and while I’m not sure what went into it I do know that it won a gold medal at the 2016 San Fransisco World Spirits Competition and a silver at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. That ain’t nothing!

This third version is also comprised of single malts from Islay, Speyside, and the Highlands. It sits at 46% ABV after having married in an undisclosed type of barrel for a full year.

The nose is mad decent, throwing a good amount at you. I picked up oak, grain, pear, green apple, and intermingled salt and smoke. Maybe even a hint of rye bread? Is that possible?

Up front on the palate is salty caramel, and plenty of it. There is also an intriguing bit of bitter coffee and liquorice, spiked with a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg. This boasts an incredibly long finish for a blended malt, the Islay coming through strong with plenty of peat and smoke, plus a salty undercurrent and some bitter oak tannins.

This was really cool, and much more assertive than I remember the original Shetland Reel being. The smoke is so perfectly-timed to assert itself on the back end, it’s kind of amazing. I liked this a lot!

Incidentally, if you’re a reader, I highly recommend the book in the background. The Break by Katherena Vermette is an incredibly powerful and stirring story about an Indigenous family in Winnipeg and how they cope with their own reaction to a sudden act of violence and the institutional forces that bear down upon them as a result. At least, that’s what it’s about so far; I’m a little better than half-finished, but I would recommend it without reservation.
