#Uridium
Tumblr media
Attention bajoran workers, I have been informed that some of you have taken the habit of participating in the human practice known as "thugposting". Any reduction in the uridium refinement output is unacceptable, any and all such "thugposting" will cease at once or I will have no choice but to release neurocine gas into the habitat ring.

Linux Life Episode 85
Tumblr media
Hello everyone and welcome back to Linux Life, my ever ongoing muddling journey with Linux.
So since we last spoke I have installed Proton and Path of Exile is working fine.
Once again it used to have problems with KDE 5 Wayland but works quite happily with KDE 6 Wayland version. Which is a good thing I even tested it with the new league Necropolis expansion and it works incredibly well.
I admit I am not a huge player of games so I will eventually get around to trying other games but for now I am happy that it works.
I have however found an issue with the Cairo Dock Wayland test. The only way to add shortcuts now is to create a desktop shortcut and drag it to the dock. Previously you could drag from the KDE menu but that stopped working with the new plug-ins update.
It still can not offset the dock like the X11 version but in time I am sure they will crack it.
Screen capture can now be done using the KDE Spectacle app for the moment. Shutter has been got working with Wayland for Ubuntu but is only available a Deb file. Unfortunately he hasn’t got it working with Arch or I would go back to Shutter which is my preferred tool.
I did try a DebTap conversion but it failed to convert got stuck in a script loop. I have no idea if he intends to make an Arch version.
Tumblr media
Also managed to get OpenRCT 2.0 working using the GOG version of Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. It’s not a game I play a lot but it is works after installation of a tool called innoextract. Not my position to question why but it worked.
Tumblr media
I have also been playing with a few emulators. I am now running the latest version of VICE to emulate a C64. Installed and works fine had to make a few tweaks to setup to get joysticks emulated correctly but it works.
I just wish I knew more C64 games worth playing. Tried Kikstart 2, Uridium, Uridium Plus and BoulderDash. I have documented my life of upset with Commodore 64s in my other blogs and won’t make you suffer having to read about them again.
Tumblr media
Also playing with Atari800 emulator. Once again my knowledge of good games is limited I have tried Boulder Dash and Jet Boot Jack but they were the only two games I ever tried. I did try some demos from the Atari 8-bit Tosec with varying levels of success. However I do have the Tosec from archive.org so I will obviously test more games in time.
I have installed OpenMSX and fMSX and the Tosecs but to be honest I am yet to try anything running as BIOS roms need putting in specific locations which sounds like a lot of work.
If anyone has any gaming recommendations on the above emulators or PC games then drop a comment in the Facebook group.
I am now working with an iPhone to connect Linux to the internet. Took a bit of a fight but it’s working. KDE can even mount the iPhone to allow file transfer.
I copied some MP3s across and can be accessed on the iPhone using VLC
If I can do things like that then I can probably copy videos made using the iPhone camera back to the Dell and edit them using KDEnlive. As of yet that’s a future project but could be an interesting idea.
Also want to install Ardour to see if it works with Pipewire and see if podcasting is possible. May even try and see if I can get some VSTs working.
So have plenty of things to attempt when we next speak. Hopefully it will be successful but may equally may break things horrifically.
We shall see.. until next time. Take care...

Uridibad - a parody of Uridium
Something a bit different this week, with an early Sensible Software abandoned development called Uridibad for the #Commodore64. A parody of Uridium which the team planned to release as a quick budget title like Galax-I-Birds and likely via Firebird.

Uridium is a classic shoot 'em up video game that was originally developed by Andrew Braybrook and published by Hewson Consultants in 1986 for various home computer platforms (including MS-DOS). In Uridium, players control a spaceship known as the Manta, and the objective is to destroy a series of enemy spacecraft, as well as ground-based installations and turrets. The original C64 version of Uridium won the Golde Joystick Award in 1986.

It only took me like 36 years to get around to it, but I finally played Uridium on my C64 so figured I'd check out the cover art. Upscaled and retouched a little. Not sure of the artist on this one.

Uridium - Player Sprite Animation
So I spent this morning deconstructing the ship animation from Andrew Braybrook’s seminal C64 space shooter, Uridium. There’s something so elegant about the way the player’s craft flips over and then rights itself to change direction. All of this happens effortlessly over a 50Hz scrolling background.
Below is the looped animation. The position of the cast shadow is used to indicate height above the surface (it is not uniform through the anim cycle - there is added elevation during the flip before the ship goes back to hugging the surface at full speed).
Tumblr media
And below is the ship animation from the Amiga follow up, Uridium 2:
Tumblr media
Uridium was Braybrook’s third game following Gribbly’s Day Out and Paradroid. Getting the smooth 50Hz scroll routine down in assembler was his chief concern. He wanted the game to look and handle like it belonged in the arcade. The gameplay itself was simplified and polished to squeeze the most out of each CPU cycle. The end result is a truly iconic game of the 8 bit era.

Uridium (Graftgold/Hewson, Commodore 64, 1986)
[this post is an edited version of an earlier post on Uridium]
Tumblr media
Gallup all formats chart, Your Computer Volume 6 No. 5, May 1986
Tumblr media
Uridium is by the quite prolific Andrew Braybrook, creator of other games including Paradroid. Given that his twitter handle is @UridiumAuthor it’s clear it has a special place in his career. As with the music charts you can see a pattern where #1s are not the product of a release being exceptionally successful -- many big sellers never make it -- but of momentum built that means something new getting immediate attention. For games this usually applies to games within a series, and means we’ll be seeing a lot of sequels. It’s not as easy for a game developer as for a singer or band to get the same following, since they’re not emphasised in the same way, but sometimes it works, as we have seen with Ultimate.
Tumblr media
In Andrew Braybrook’s case it’s also interesting because Uridium is not an obvious game to see at the top. It’s a space shoot-em-up, which is a genre that kind of goes right back to Space Invaders, in this case turned on its side and scrolling, but we don’t see a whole lot of those at the top in the mid-80s. In the context of Paradroid, a which uses a shoot-em-up as a base for a complex game about taking over droids and exploring, Uridium is back-to-basics. It seems that he’d earned players’ trust that this was an exciting prospect.
Tumblr media
Your more simple task involves taking on enemy defence drones and doughnut-shaped fighters above the backdrop of the enemy’s larger transporters. Without reading up I wouldn’t have known that the parallax scrolling -- the transporter moving on screen, the stars staying in place behind it -- was considered a major technical triumph, but partly that’s because Uridium looks and plays smoothly enough not to seem like a tech demo. Its limited colour palette with occasional details brightly picked out works very nicely, including the way it changes up each level.
Relatively simple as its gameplay is, Uridium is not quite a typical shoot-em-up, and my learned response that I should get from the left to the right of the level as quick as possible and prioritise avoiding enemy ships let in short order to repeated failure. Compared to other games I was familiar with, the enemies are really underpowered. You can even fly through them, or rather over them -- 3D space! However, I initially kept getting wiped out by the more impenetrable defence that is walls, or getting to the end of the transporter and having to turn around.
Tumblr media
The twist comes from the fact that the goal of each level isn’t just to get through and survive, shooting as needed, but to destroy docked and defenceless enemy spaceships on the transporter on your way. Do enough of that and you can come in to land and do whatever mysterious action it is that leads to the whole lot disintegrating as you sweep away. That means the better strategy is a lot of slowing down, which the game lets you do to the point of turning around and heading back where you’ve just come from. There’s still enough danger to keep that from getting dull, though. The other effect of the set-up is to place you more clearly in the role of an aggressor than these things usually get, which is an odd feeling when any explanation for the need for such pre-emptive strikes takes place off-screen. Careful, methodical death and destruction, with a high score table to track it.
