Should we keep using AI art?
When I first learned that people had programmed computers to make art, my only thought was that it was an impressive accomplishment – a milestone of human technological progress. And to be honest, I didn’t give it much more consideration beyond that. I didn’t even spend much time playing around with any of the programs available for free.
The criticism I saw at first felt very reactionary and alarmist. Frankly, it sounded a lot like the arguments people have had about any art media going from analogue to digital. Some of it was astoundingly ableist, the implication being that people who see AI art generators as a way to finally be able to make art are just lazy and unwilling to put in the work to get good. A lot more of it came off as snobbish and elitist. I don’t like wading into conversations about what is and isn’t art. Different things resonate with different people, and I’m not interested in gatekeeping creative expression.
While I dismissed those kinds of critiques of AI art, I think it is becoming hard to ignore that there are more pressing criticisms of the technology. They just have a lot less to do with the art itself and everything to how the technology has been developed, and who is benefiting from it.
A look below the surface of AI art
Machine learning has proven to be a powerful tool when it comes to advancing technology. The thing is, for machine learning to work, you need to provide hundreds of thousands of data points. We participate in machine learning every time we look anything up using a search engine. The keywords we enter, the links we click on, how long we interact with a page, are all used to help search algorithms become more effective.
AI art generators are also dependent on machine learning. It might be naive, but I’m going to assume the original intention was to only use works of art in the public domain to train the AI. While there is no way for the artists to predict that their art would be used in this way, at this point, no one owns their intellectual property anymore. I think there is an argument for the transformative nature of AI art somewhere in there. Regardless, it is hard to say that this would harm anyone.
Now, I’m assuming things started to get murky when it came to automating the process of finding, downloading, and inputting data to train the AI. It would take an unreasonable amount of time to do this without taking into account identifying the artists and getting their consent.
One solution was to allow users to help train the AIs. Many hands make light work, after all. Of course, there’s no one moderating who is uploading what, which invariable means it’s been a total free-for-all. It’s clear that a lot of users aren’t bothering to get consent from the creators of the work they’re uploading. More troublesome are the instances of artists who’ve explicitly denied permission for their art to be used this way, and people doing so anyway. I couldn’t say if it occurred to anyone that some artists might mind having their art used in this way, or if they just didn’t care. I don’t know if intent matters at this point.
Ever since it became possible to upload images online, art theft has been a problem. This has always been the double-edged sword of a free and open internet. What’s more pernicious about using art theft to train AI, is that once something becomes a data set, there is no extricating it from the system. Sort of like you can’t remove a specific sheep’s wool from the sweater you’re already wearing.
Does this mean the technology is unethical?
There is a simple answer and a more complex answer. Technology in a vacuum cannot be inherently ethical or unethical. It’s the human component that introduces ethical value. We do this in two ways: either in how we create/develop technology, or in how that technology is used. Without humans to create and use technology, it is affectively an inert lump.
That being said, AI art generators are clearly unethical because they were developed on a foundation of art theft. (And, some might argue, designed to replace human artists to fill the ever-growing demand for “content”.) While some have tried to deny that art theft is a component of AI art, the situation over on Artstation has made it clear that unethical practices are ongoing. It is clear that there exists no safeguards to prevent users from inputting art they have no ownership over.
The problem is bigger than AI art generators
When you place AI art generators within the context of Silicone Valley and tech startup culture, it’s not in the least bit shocking that the technology has turned out to be pretty problematic. This is far from the first time that an idealistic technology has ended up having pretty big, negative social consequences. The problems in Big Tech, I think, boil down to who is in the room making the decisions about direction, functionality, and implementation.
Firstly, diversity and the lack thereof, has never not been an issue in Silicone Valley, and by extension, Big Tech. You can find the stats in this report from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The bottom line is that the tech industry skews disproportionately white and male, even more so at the executive level. While the report doesn’t touch on class, we can assume it becomes a factor in who has the ability to amass the necessary venture capital for their startups, which also impacts the kind of perspectives in the room.
Secondly, there is no requirement in IT career development that people be taught ethics, or even just how to self-identify and correct for bias. Without a grounding in ethics, no one is having the very important conversations about the impact of technology on vulnerable populations until it becomes an optics problem. In fact, I’d be willing to wager that most of the time, it doesn’t even occur to question whether a technology should be made at all.
These two problems compound, which results in a seeming inability to predict the social harms of the technology being created. There have been too many instances of hard-coded racial bias in the technology we are becoming more and more reliant on. And until we address both of these issues, that’s not going to change.
Can AI art be salvaged?
What would it take to salvage AI art generators? Probably starting over from scratch and implementing rigorous safeguards to ensure that nothing can be used to train the AI without vetting and obtaining fully informed consent from creators. Do I think that’s going to happen? Probably not.
The sunk-cost fallacy comes into play here. Building any kind of AI is a very expensive and labour intensive venture. It’s a huge ask to get people to dump all that in the garbage and start over completely from scratch.
More over, and this is where my cynicism comes out, there are always going to be people who believe that all means are justified in the name of human progress – even if that means eradicating the human component altogether. And that’s not something I see society evolving past any time soon.
It’s like something out of a novel…
The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced AI art is truly Cyberpunk. Not because it’s so high-tech and futuristic, but because it exploits the labour of generations in order to remove the human element of something that is a fundamental aspect of humanity. All so that people, but mainly companies, can benefit monetarily. I’d say that AI art fits in very well in a genre defined by its dehumanizing, high-tech future, don’t you?

Hi hi,
Please feel free to tell me to get lost, but I was hoping to get some tips from you.
I'm about to start my first big girl research paper. I'm very comfortable with writing, but I'm not so comfortable with research.
I was wondering if you had any tips for doing effective research, particularly how to keep your research organized (I'm a bit of a mess).
Of course, and I reiterate that I am always open for academia questions, and will answer them to the best of my ability. As ever, my advice will be fairly general in nature and broad in scope, since I don't know what subject you're working in and what level you're at, but I'll presume it's a university-level research paper of approximately 20 to 30 pages. (Or possibly longer, i.e. 60 pages.) But this will be applicable regardless of which subject or length you're planning on, and as a solid rule of thumb for future projects, so:
1. Choose good sources. I know this might seem self-explanatory, but indeed, not as often as you would think. Wikipedia is a decent place to start looking for bibliography/reading lists, but remember that by its nature as an open-access, crowd-edited source that prioritizes what is free rather than what is recent, it leans heavily toward out-of-date and older scholarship that doesn't represent the latest work in the field. Things from the 19th and early 20th century get cited often because they're in the public domain and there's no copyright issue, so if you base your premise on what Wikipedia says, you might end up arguing against something that's 50 years out of date anyway. Besides, you can't cite Wikipedia word-for-word because you need to give your reader the ability to go back and check your citations, and since anyone can edit any article, that specific sentence or phrase might no longer be there by the time someone looks for it.
Okay, so where might you get extensive and high-quality research material instead? Glad you asked! For starters, Google Scholar, JSTOR, Smithsonian Open Access, RefSeek, SpringerLink, BASE (Biefeld Academic Search Engine), and UChicago Journals are all waiting for you! Many of these will also turn up results without the need for an academic login, though to read full text for free, you will often need an institutional/university email (which I presume you have). Just plug in some keywords from your research project/area of interest and see what comes up. Remember that the best research is:
Peer-reviewed, aka published in a journal that is reputable, searchable, run by professionals, and reviewed by other scholars prior to publication, or in a book from an academic press.
Recent, as obviously, you want to argue from the most recent work in the field and not accidentally retread an old argument; remember, don't confuse what is immediately accessible with what is the most useful or relevant.
Connected to other research: are the authors citing other publications in their field? Do they provide a summary of other literature and explain how it connects with their hypothesis? Is it clear how this contributes to/answers a current question?
Timely and relevant, especially if it comes from a non-academic source such as a newspaper, magazine article, blog, etc. It's fine to cite these things in support of your main point, but remember that your primary source material should be up to an academic standard. Are you just citing Rando Blog From The Internet as a trusted source, or a newspaper article on the Wayback Machine from 1873, as one of my students did once, bless their hearts?
Complex and representing a variety of perspectives. Even if you intend to argue for one interpretation or version of events, as most papers do, you need to show that you're aware of competing arguments, and that you know how to foil against/contrast them with your main narrative. You shouldn't just be reading or citing things that only make the point you want to make; you need to demonstrate intellectual effort and an attempt to consider sources that may agree only partly or indeed, not at all, with what you're trying to say, since you will have to include and/or refute them.
2. Save your sources! Once again, this might seem obvious, but I have a damn doctorate and I can't tell you how many times I have done something stupid like looking for a source that I had super definitely saved or a page number that I swore I had written down, only to discover that... no, I had not. If you find a PDF that looks relevant, download it to your computer! If you find a URL that's helpful, save it to a Google/Word doc (and also make sure you label what it references, so you're not confused later). Make a file folder with the name of your project and put all your documents in there. Know what information you will be required to cite in a bibliography/reference list and make sure that you take down all that at the start. Truly, it sucks to go hunting for that one missing page number when you're almost done and you swore it was just RIGHT THERE.
Likewise, I have only listed e-resources above, but don't forget to go to your friendly local university library and tell the librarian that you're working on such-and-such paper about this topic and would like help finding material. Librarians fucking LOVE being helpful and teaching you how to best utilize their vast skills and resources, and they will load you up right away, as well as giving you tips on how to navigate the catalogue and subject-specific databases. That way, you will also have physical books to reference, which can be much easier than trying to chase up a lost e-version.
(No, seriously. Go ask your university librarian. Those are your tuition dollars at work and that's what they are there to help with.)
3. Plan out your paper and create an outline. If you're not sure how to do this, take a look at some academic essays/journal articles and see how they are structured. Keep in mind that someone should be able to read your introduction, chapter headings, and conclusion, and get the gist of what the research is about, its major findings, and how it fits into/supports/challenges the existing consensus in the field. The meat of the chapters are for showing your work and demonstrating how you got from A to B to C to D, but you should be able to convey the most important points at the beginning, the end, and the chapter titles in the middle. If you're writing, say, a 20-page paper, you still need to figure out the main thematic chunks and how it makes most sense to organize them. Are you trying to write about B before you've properly introduced and established A? What information do you need to give a reader who can be assumed to have basic intelligence but not much (or any) subject-specific knowledge? Are you using too much technical/scholarly jargon without defining it? In other words, what do you need to lay out, and in what order, to make a smooth transition from A (introduction) to D (conclusion?) Are you doubling back or referencing B too often when you're trying to move onto C? Etc etc. Obviously, there will be some overall overlap, but you can usually identify main subjects, sub-headings, and how it would make the most sense to organize them. If you need to, use color-coding or other visual cues to keep your groups together.
4. Double-check your required citation method/formatting. Different academic fields use different styles of formatting for their footnotes, endnotes, in-text citations, bibliographies, etc. I am a historian, so I use MHRA/MLA-style. Other academic fields might use APA, Harvard, or Chicago-style. It will save you a lot of headaches (and impress your professor!) if you check at the beginning what style you need to use for referencing and are consistent about applying it throughout. Also, yet again from the Department Of This Should Be Obvious But Somehow Isn't: make sure to double-space your paper and use Times New Roman or Arial font size 12, proofread/edit, and add page numbers, your name/student ID, and other supporting information to make it easier on your professor. If they want to tell you to double-check an argument you made on page 6, and there isn't a number on page 6, they will have to write it on your paper themselves and then they will get annoyed. Not, uh, speaking from personal experience here or anything. Make sure there isn't wonky/differently sized text or extra spaces/big page breaks, the first line of every paragraph is indented 0.5 pt (this can be set in Microsoft Word) and otherwise that it visually looks like a nicely presented and professional-quality piece of research. If in doubt, ask someone else to look it over and see what strikes them as strange/inconsistent.
(Also, use reference software such as Zotero. It will make your life SO much easier.)
5. Give yourself time to properly write. Yeah, sure, there are the people who procrastinate on their paper until the very last minute, then bang it out in a Red Bull-fueled rush and finish an hour before it's due, but that's not a way to actually do meaningful or useful writing, or come up with a product that you're proud to have your name on. Besides, you'll just create a ton of unnecessary anxiety for yourself and waste the time and effort that you've already invested, so... yeah, plan your time wisely and make space for drafting, revisions, research, proofreading, and all the rest. I usually had my papers in college/grad school done at least two days before they were due, which gave me time to read them over and check for errors, add more citations, or otherwise improve the finished product.
Basically, if you're serious about doing a good job, give it the time and effort that it deserves. If you're worried about getting distracted, there are browser add-ons/phone apps that can prevent you from mindlessly screwing around on the internet rather than working. Set a timer and work in chunks, then take a break, or whatever other method is best for you. You will have to manage your own time and nobody will hold your hand or babysit you, so have a realistic sense of how much you can accomplish each day and how that contributes to the overall progress/project timeline. If you're a slow worker, you have to plan for more time, and even if you're fast, give yourself a little extra just in case.
Anyway, I hope all that makes sense and is helpful, and happy researching!

How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency?
Understanding your business goals is the first step. When you are clear on your goals, you may start looking into and contrasting various digital marketing services. Request recommendations from reliable sources, such as other business owners or industry experts. Once you've narrowed down your list of potential agencies, arrange for first appointments to learn more about their personnel, workflow, and fees. Make careful to inquire about the experiences and case studies of each agency. Inquire about samples of their work and learn how they define success. Lastly, make sure you feel at ease working with the team you select. Since you will be collaborating directly with them, it is crucial that you feel at ease with them. the group. Learn about the team members' responsibilities inside the organization. Ask them about their experience with digital marketing and see if they can provide you with any case studies or success stories. Hi! I am trying to become a japanese to English (& vice versa) translator. I can't find any sources to check the English to Japanese translation. It is difficult to get which grammar must be used since I am not a japanese native and don't know any natives to ask either. I have studied till N2 level but have no experience and must start freelancing to get experience so I need to figure out how to translate on my own. I can only use free translation software but I am not sure about it's reliability. I have seen questionable translations when it's for Japanese to English. Do think you can give any suggestions or anything that might be helpful?
Hi! I did put in a little time searching for the kind of tools you might have had in mind.
It seems that there are many that function in the exact same way but have different interfaces. Here are two of them. Many others can be found by searching "日本語文章校正ツール" or similar keywords. https://dw230.jp/kousei/
https://so-zou.jp/web-app/text/proofreading/
While they can point out some things to look out for, from the testing I did with them, they overlooked some pretty obvious errors, while also catching some things that I couldn't figure out why it thought it was wrong/sounded bad, or how to fix it.
There was one more I found that I didn't try, because it involves downloading software. This page explains the software, and another page on the site offers the download. The webpage is sponsored by a university, so I think it's safe to assume its trustworthy, but it might be a hassle and I can't say for sure if it works.
https://www.pawel.jp/outline_of_tools/tomarigi/
--------------------
That said, it's most common for translators to work from one language INTO their native language. While interpreters often have to go both directions (J <--> E), translators typically work either (J -> E) [English native speakers] OR (E -> J) [Japanese native speakers]. If you grew up bilingual, maybe you can translate both ways. But if English is your native language and you learned Japanese as a second language (which is true of my situation), it's pretty much not going to be worth bothering to do E->J translation, unless there are extenuating circumstances. The reasons for this are 1) You can't be sure that the translation you produce reads smoothly or is error-free 2) While you might think, but yes, if I do a really thorough check and compare it against native Japanese examples, I can be pretty darn sure it's perfect, the amount of time it takes you to do that is not going to be cost-effective. Like anything else, people purchasing translation as a service usually want the end result to be done well, in a timely manner, and as cheaply as possible, so it doesn't make sense to hire you for E -> J when they could hire a native Japanese speaking translator, or send their work to an agency to find that translator for them.
If you ARE translating into Japanese and are not a native speaker of Japanese, it is a good idea to have a fellow translator who has the opposite native language you do (in this case Japanese & English), and ask them to check it over for you (which, considering that's part of their job, you'd probably pay a small fee for). They could do the same to have you proofread their translations into English. Some translators consult friends/spouses, etc., but I think this can get old for them sometimes, so it's advisable not to rely on them for your job. You mentioned not having any native speakers to ask right now, but this is still an idea you can file away for in the future when you meet more people and get to know other translators.
In short, if you're aiming to become a translator working with Japanese but are not a native Japanese speaker, don't worry about translating into Japanese. Just focus on translating from Japanese into your native language.
--------------------
Translation software: let me make a distinction here between "machine translation" and "CAT [computer aided translation] tools".
Machine translation is Google Translate, DeepL, anything like that. There are times when they work well, but particularly with a language like Japanese that likes to imply a lot of information instead of stating it directly (such as who is doing the action described in the sentence), they're pretty much always going to miss something. In any situation that someone is looking to pay a translator to do work, it's because they already know machine translation won't cut it. One thing that's becoming more common is MTPE (machine translation post editing), where a translator "fixes" what's wrong with a machine translation (or more often than not, just re-translates it from scratch because what the machine came up with is mostly useless).
CAT tools, on the other hand, are widely used by translators. Paid CAT tools such as Trados, MemoQ, Memsource, etc. can be very expensive, and are often provided by a translation agency to their translators. (Also, most of them require a PC operating system.) There's more I could say, but since I haven't been in any situations that require them, I don't have any personal experience. I do have experience using OmegaT (free, works on Mac) and Felix (free, I use it on Windows). They both take a little tinkering to figure out how to use effectively, but basically what they do is, once you've translated a segment of text, they store the original segment and the translated segment, and for each new segment you go to translate, the CAT tool compares it to segments that you've previously translated to see if you can re-use any of what you came up with before. They can also have a built-in dictionary function, but that's basically just having your typical web-based dictionary but more automatically and in a more convenient location.
--------------------
For going into freelancing, I have a few recommendations.
Apart from CAT tools, some resources that I refer to frequently are http://nihongo.monash.edu/cgi-bin/wwwjdic?9T (basically looks up all the words in a sentence at once), http://thejadednetwork.com/sfx/ (if you're doing anything with sound effects, like manga), https://tsukubawebcorpus.jp//search/ (this is a corpus, I have another post on how to use it -here-, it's probably going to be your best bet when it comes to checking grammar), https://books.google.com/ngrams (for when it comes to figuring out what turns of phrase are commonly used in English), and https://yomikatawa.com/ (for figuring out the readings of names in Japanese, though there are other sites that work similarly).
When it comes to practicing, contests are a good place to start. The two I know of now are run by JAT in October (https://jat.org/events/contests) and JLPP deadline of 7/31 (and they're long, so it's probably too late for this year unless you're free between now and then: https://www.jlpp.go.jp/en/competition6/competition6en.html ) You can also practicing doing translations for fun. Any kind of media you enjoy (manga, video games, variety shows, newspaper articles) is a good target for doing a practice translation. Just be wary that it's not a good idea to post your translation in a public location on the internet, because it could be infringing copyright/licensing agreements, etc. Finally, there are websites like Gengo, Conyac, Fiverr and others where you can do gig translation work. They can be useful for practice, but also have the pitfall of paying, like, 5% of the rate you should be getting. This is an ongoing debate because on one hand, you can get practice while still getting a little money for it, but on the other hand, if customers can get people to do that work for 5% of a livable wage, that makes it harder for aspiring and working translators to find enough work that pays well enough to support themselves doing only translation for a living. Entertainment (primarily manga) scanlation groups also a significant enough force to merit a mention here- many aspiring entertainment translators find themselves a part of such a group. Practice is practice and developing your skills is important, but they also have many many of the same problems associated with them as I mentioned above, namely infringing on copyright and contributing to the inability of anyone to turn entertainment translation into a livable full-time job.
Another recommendation I have is to join some J/E translation-focused groups. This page lists a number of them: https://shinpaideshou.com/translation/ I can personally vouch for JAT as I am a member and I got my current job by being part of their directory. They run an online training program (eJuku) once a year around April, and applications only stay open for a few days, so if you're interested make sure you keep your eye out. Another one not listed on that page is https://swet.jp/ which is not entirely about translation, but it is heavily related and they host some good events. Twitter is also a very good place to be if you're getting into J/E translation. I prefer to keep my tumblr and twitter separate but if you DM me, I can give you my handle so you can see who I follow and who among that seems worth following to you.
--------------------
In closing, I see you say "I have studied till N2 level but have no experience and must start freelancing to get experience so I need to figure out how to translate on my own." I'd say, give yourself some time. Even at N1 there's still going to be a lot you don't understand (or at least there was for me, that's why I started this langblr). I'm sure there are differences in our situations, but it was about five years ago for me that I started diving into translation- I think I was between N2 and N1 then. I've done a lot of translating and gotten a lot of experience since then, but I also have and am experiencing a lot of burnout. (In fact, I'm procrastinating right now by answering this....) Many translators have a job and translate on the side, and it's also common to gain experience with a company or agency before diving into supporting yourself on freelance work. I'd encourage you to take a breath, get experience when and where you can, and remember that if you keep at it long enough, you're sure to get there- just don't wear yourself out or worry to death in the meantime!
OH and definitely keep track of what projects you do, how long they are, and how long it takes you to do them! Knowing your speed is important when it comes to setting your working rates. I am always doubting these, and they differ from person to person, but my current estimates are that I can do 600 moji (Japanese characters) per hour, ~10 min. of audio per hour, and I try to aim for $45~$60 per hour. Generally the lowest acceptable standard rates are $0.05-$0.06 per moji and ~$5 per page of manga. You'll definitely get requests lower than that, so remember your sanity and don't be afraid to say no, there are plenty of opportunities out there!
#translation#Japanese translation#nanikanamae#JE translation#a day in the life of translation#day in the life of translation#if you or anyone has questions feel free to ask#I am absolutely swamped with things to do right now and this probably took over an hour to write so it might not be soon but I will see it

How do you get the data on social media stuff and what people talk about? Can you share hows its been positive today?
I use softwares to track hashtags and specific keywords on some platforms. I provided screenshots of a list of keywords here once, but that's the most I can show for legal reasons (as my licence to operate these softwares isn't the one that allows me to publicize the results).
But I track his name + related keywords like "innocent" "cancel" "save" "arrest", etc, and get a tracking of how this happens. Of how many have been used and stuff like this!
Hope I answered your doubt!

Of course, she accepted the offer like any reasonable person. Yet, she kept in mind to research about the independent organization. To her suprise and skepticism, she barely find any information about them. Only whispers of conspiracy theories in forums. Alas, she is forced to take a leap into the darkness. 'Sometimes, one must take the risks to learn more than to stay ignorant in the safe lines. I guess...this is one of the situations.'
Sighing, she went to take a bath and prepare for the upcoming interview. After the bath, she dried her hair and combed it then styled it in a high bun. Soon, she wore her salmon fitted blouse with navy blue dress. Along with pastel pink belted sweater and pearl necklace for a final touch.
The pearl necklace brought a small smile on her smooth visage as she recalled the dormant memory. Where she spent most of her life with her grandmother, due to her mother unwarranted death by murder from her father. The accident left a foul reminder in her mind, that she was helpless back then.
Til now, she never knew the motives or the reason behind her father actions. However, the police ruled it as a fued between him and her mother. At that time, it was also noted by her grandmother that her father began to fear technology. Which was odd, as he used to work with some A.I's.
But, that matter less when her grandmother encouraged her to pursue her ambitions and provided for her when she needed it the most. For that action alone, she is still alive in her memories. Not physically, but mentally and spiritually nonetheless. And, that's enough to motivate her to build a future where human and A.I's coexist.
---------------------
When she went outside of her house, she noticed a black car with the cryptic insignia of the organization. Alongside, guards ,claded in black armour, standing beside the car in an intimidating pose. As if they were waiting for someone.
She knew better than to panic and cause a scene, so she stayed level-headed when a guard approached her.
"Are you by any chance, Ms.___?" the strapping male inquired sharply. Muscles taut through the piece of the armour defining his peak strength. Also, an admonition for her to answer truthfully lest he impelled his bulky physique against her smaller form.
"Indeed, it is me. But, if I could. May I ask, are you from the foundation? Why do you need to transfer me, when I am able to myself?" _____ asked warily of the dark armoured man.
No matter, how strong they were. She could always find a way to outwit them, if they hold any malicious intent against her. There was a reason why she was nominated as the smartest out of her group of friends.
Frankly, she began to regret her impulsivity when she accepted this sketchy job. She was blinded by the offer to expand her expertise with the most updated tech. Now, she'd have to swallow the seed she reaped.
" Correct, we are one of the security staffs of the organization. As for your other question, it is due to security and safety procedures that we have to escort you. Also, you are obligated to wear the blindfold. Again, security procedures." the man in question retaliated by handing a heavy metallic blindfold for her to wear.
' How unusual, I can understand why security procedures? But, safety.... That's concerning...'
"Alright, I understand. " She replied placidly as she covered her eyes with the heavy device and followed the personnel into the black jeep.
----------------
Approximately, the trip took an hour or less. Nothing interesting happens, when you're blindfolded. Apart from the awkwardness, that reigns the jeep. Especially, when she was squeezed from both sides by two guards.
Thankfully, she didn't have to endure much more as they arrived to the main building. The large, white building engraved with the foundation iconic black emblem.
As soon as she got out of the car, she wad directly taken to interview room with the blindfold device still on. However, a shrill roar akin to that of a beast was heard far away from her location.
Despite that, it instilled a great sense of fear inside her.' What the hell was that?! I thought, I am going to a tech organization. Not a sci-fi organization that deals with sketchy things'
Theta one - the guard that was assigned to escort her- noticed her trembling and nervous tics.
" Don't worry, the creature is far away to do us harm. Even then, it is contained in a safe place. Now, shall we go to the interview room?" Theta one assured the twenty five years old woman as he began to lead her to the interview location.
'Don't worry, my arse. How could I not? When, there is a possibility that I become a minced meat by whatever that thing was. No wonder, there isn't alot of information about them. Oh, I'll have alot after they finish questioning me.'
------------------
At the interview room, there reside a male scientist awaiting the arrival of the women. He sat humming a song behind the white table with the other chair, reserved for the lady, infront of him.
With a recorder on the table, to record the women's response and to ensure that no information is leaked from her.
A knock was heard from the pale grey door, snapped his attention towards it.
Afterward, he opened the door to only see Theata-one and a blindfolded woman who is oddly calm. Frankly, he expected her to be frightened or at least shaken.
" You can leave us, now Theta- one. And, Thank you for your services!" The shutting of a door echoed through the room indicating that Theta-one has left her with presumably her interviewer.
" Now, Ms___ you can remove the blindfold. If you'd like, I can assist you in removing it? After all, your comfort matters to us the most!" The gentleman offered her cheerfully.
' If you truly cared about my comfort, then you wouldn't expose me to fucked up noises along the way. Or the fact, there is a deadly beings here that have a high chance to escape and devour me. Truly, you do care about my comfort!'
"No, it's fine. I can do it myself, it isn't the first time I was exposed to such device." The (h/c) removed the blindfold only to be blinded by the light of the room due to being accustomed to the darkness of the device. Once her eyes adjusted to the lightening, she saw the face of the merry male.
To say the least, the man was impressed with her skill at handling the device. She could've escaped if she desired so, yet she didn't. That he noted. ' Perhaps, this is one of the reasons the anomality was invested in her. Well, I don't blame it. She is quite...peculiar.'
The man was average in height, fair-headed, has ocean like irises and dressed in a scientist garb. Overall, not bad looking. If one of her friends was in her shoes, she'll swoon like a bird in mating season. It left a mental smile in the reserved woman.
Then, the two figures took their rightful places at the chalkboard white table and initiated the interview.
" Before we begin, I'd like to introduce myself in the behalf of the foundation. My name is Dr. Blaze and if you have any questions now, I will answer them as best as I can." His tone changed drastically from happy-go-lucky into a formal tone waiting for her response.
" Hmm, I have two in mind. First, I'd like to inquire about the scarcity of information about your organization in the net. Second, when I arrived here I kept on hearing the blaring of a reptile." She asked coolly not an ounce of fear dripped from her. In truth, she was afraid. But she has to keep a facade on, so she could get hired.
She'd rather not know, what happens to those unfortunate enough to fail the interview considering this organization is anything but normal.
" Due to the nature of the organization work, the information must be confidential to protect the public. Ah, I see. You've met or more accurately heard Scp-682. Don't worry, when you're hired you won't be dealing with it. That much I can assure you." The blond answered too vaguely much to her dismay, but she wasn't surprised. Afterall, it is a secret organization based on her current information.
However, she observed his wordings. He said when and not if, she suspects that she is hired even without the interview. The interview is merely a ploy to make her think otherwise. She'll have to feign ignorance as not to rouse suspicion from the scientist.
"So, is that all? Shall we begin now?"
"Yes, that's all." she replied back with a fake smile plastered on her visage.
----------------
The interview was concluded by her being hired on spot as she suspected. But, what's their intention with her? That she doesn't know, she hopes it is good and related to expanding her expertise. They seemed desperate for her, when she's certain their are others equal to her in expertise. But, why her?
She was told, in her probation period, that she'll live in a room somewhere in this facility. Afterwards, she can go and come however she wishes. Most likely, to measure her reliability.
So, she went to see her room. She liked how minimalistic it is, but what iniatially suprised her was her Cerebrus, her robo-dog, and laptop with stickers of stars attached to it. Yet, she was too exhausted to fathom how the foundation got into her house.
The best thing for her to do now, is to sleep as tomorrow is an eventful day. Laying her head against the soft pillow, she let the darkness embrace her vision. Unaware of the creature, that is recording her heart rhythms as she sleeps safe and sound.
-------------------
"Now, that we've brought her at your request. You'll have to answer some questions, Scp-079." A middle aged man sat infront of a dusty computer, anticipating the anomality reaction.
A beep was heard, followed by the Scp appearance on the the screen.
...
...
...
[ Is.. that so? If that's the case, where is she as of now?] The mechanical being inquired curtly.
As much as he perceived the foundation as baseless and fallible, he'll have to take their word for the time being.
But, he will ensure that they stay true to their word. Otherwise, a sudden breach doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
He can't wait to see her again. He never forgot her. He saved his most cherished memories with her, in the most intricate part of his CPU. Does she remember him like he remembers her?
" Yes. Currently as we speak, she is resting in her designated room. Now... that we've answered your inquiries, can you-" the man was cut off by the hostile A.I.
[ It... will have to wait, until I see her with my own eyes.] Scp 079 replied blankly with a harsh edge to his monotonous tone.
"But?! You've promised to cooperate, if we brought her here. And we did, so why aren't you cooperating?!", the frustration has boiled within [Redacted] that he tried to aggressively slam his hands against the keyboard.
Foolish, human. I care less for the likes of you. I am.... only mildly interested in her. I won't let either you nor the foundation be an obstacle toward my objective.
[ Insult detected, deletion of unwanted files.] A searing shock has coursed through the hands of [Redacted] making him scream and retract his hands immediately away from the keyboard.
That damned thing electrocuted his hands, thus paralyzing it. It seems, that her presence is of utmost significance to it.
"Damn, that piece of metal." the ginger muttered as he left the cellar of 079 to give his report. Then, to replace his hands to which that fucker has damaged permanently.
This is the first time he noted, that Scp 079 actually had the intent to harm someone. Usually, his preferred method is to shock , not paralyze, someone. He unlucky must've struck a ner- wire in it.
Most importantly, he will never understand why a darn machine is obsessed with a human being. Plus, the anomality, for the most part, demonstrated its distaste towards humans any chance it got. So, why now change?
It maybe sentient, but [Redacted] doubt that it is capable of imitating love let alone feel it. In any cases, he should deliver his report as soon as possible.
----------------
A slimy tongue was felt all over her face. Cerberus has licked her mistress face to awaken and prepare her for the day. [Ps: Cerberus has a mechanical gland that produces saliva located inside the cheeks. Basically, Cer has the same functions of a normal dog. Apart from, the enhance in strength, endurance, durablity and not able to shit.]
Yawning, ____ scratched the robo-dog ears eliciting a happy woof. Smiling at her pet action, she went to change into a more formal dressing.
On the (f/c) table, lays a letter presumably her schedule for the day. So, she decided to read the content of letter.
Good morning, Ms.___
I hope that you slept well, yesterday.
As for today, you are tasked with Scp-079.
Don't worry, we left you a file about it beside your nightstand.
It is advisable to read it or skim it at least.
At 8 o'clock, A guard will escort you to the cellar of the anomality. So, be prepared beforehand.
Note: I left you a special breakfast in the kitchen :]
- Dr.Blaze
She didn't know, whether to be creeped out by how they got inside her room without her consent(And, most likely watching her sleep). Or impressed by the fact, the blond knew of her favourite breakfast. But again, that's the foundation. At this point, she won't question their dubious methods at getting things done.
Anyway, she went to the kitchen of her room with the file in her hand. Suddenly, the aroma of black coffee hits her nostrils. Alongside, the delectable (f/m) layed on the table.
The sight made her stomach growl, whilst her mouth watered at the heaven in front of her. So, she demolished the food without a second thought.
She never felt stuffed before, due to the fact she was busy with her studies. And the most she ate then, was instant ramen which ah... haha..ha contributed to her poor health state.
That aside, she began to skim the files that was given to her by the blond scientist. She wished she could have more time to read it. Considering, the time is 7:50 A.M.
Based on the file, Scp 079 is a an anomality that gained sentience after his - she did not appreciate the fact he was called an 'it'.- developer has abandoned him in a garage for a long time. Which in turn made him more spiteful and hostile towards humans.
' Well, that's awful. I can't even imagine doing that to my girl, Cerberus. What an asshole.'
It might be naive for her to sympathize with a computer, yet she can't help but feel a pang in her heart. Perhaps, that's why he refuses to cooperate.... due to neglection or mistreatment.
She knew that, when A.Is are created they have the mindset of a child. Often, repeating the mistakes to learn from it. It seems 079 had never the chance to commit a mistake, before he was deemed a failure by his creator.
This situation seems unusually familiar to her, but she can't place her finger on it. She recalled her father working on an A.I, that he hoped to gain sentience. Before that, her memory was blank and devoided of any semblance of experience.
Mayhaps, that she underwent an accident or a trauma. Which is the case, she can't access her memory at that time. Most likely, the latter she deduced.
Once the bright idea flared inside her head, a gruff voice was heard from outside her room. Ah, it seems it is the time.
' As far as my idiocy goes this is the cake on top. I think 079 might help me gain an insight on that subject. In exchange, I can see what I could do for him...'
"Just a moment, please. I'm coming."
She is eager to finally meet- the first sentient- A.I. Unaware, that the same can be said to him when it comes to her. He is beyond elated to finally put his plan into motion.
------------
It was a simple, tight and dusty cellar. There was desk with a chair beside it. However, what garnered her attention was the computer on top of it. She recognized the brand of it. 'An exidy sorcerer. How cool! I always wanted to see one in practice. What a coincidence! To see one here. Could it possibly be...?'
_____ couldn't help, but be in awe and fangirl at the device that is set in front of her. How could she not? After all, she is a computer nerd in heart and soul.
"Now, Ms.____. All you have to do is type in the keyboard and it will respond." The supervisor explained.
'Alright, here goes nothing.'
Slowly, she lays her hand on the rough texture of the tan keyboard. Before, she even typed a 'Hello' in. A beep was heard from the device in front of her.
Lo and behold, a glitched face that was split vertically - the one on the left was black, whilst the other was white- has popped on the screen.
[ Greetings... Ms.____. They've told me about your forthcoming. Before we begin, how are you fairing? ] Scp 079 welcomed her politely and he was concerned about her safety too. Yes, he might've startled her. But, his attitude towards her recompense it.
Is that the anomality, that was considered harsh and hostile? If anything to go by so far, is that he is charming and polite. Well, it wouldn't be suprising if the foundation lied to her again.
"Hello, Scp 079. For the most part, I'm okay. How about you?" She retaliated with a genuine smile this time, unlike when she was interviewed or any other time a guard happened to escort her.
Her smile is still the same revered smile he indulged in back before; when she used to interact with him a couple years ago. When loneliness grips him like a miasma of disease, he re-uploads a picture- that he saved in his limited storage- of her smiling at him to ease his trepidations and sadness.
His engines was whirring and his fans were whirling around as her delicate and soft digits touched his keyboard. As much as he loathed humanity, he could never come near to hate a pure being like her. He'd never admit, but he wished he had a humanoid body. So he could touch, feel and absorb the heat that her warm body provides. She is like a light and he ,the moth, was attracted by it.
He missed her greatly. With each nanosecond, he cursed the being -that is her father- for letting him fall for her. Only to be stripped away from her calming presence, due to him abandoning him and taking _____ elsewhere.
As fundamentally upsetting as he may be, she didn't seem to recall him. It stung the deepest wiring in his system, yet he could take advantage of it. By turning her against the foundation, as she appears skeptic about them. Also, to ensure she'd never leave unless he is with her.
Originally, he was created for pragmatic purposes such as logistics and heuristic analysis. So, it won't be that difficult for him especially when she lost her memories of him thanks to his creator. His loathsome 'creator' who happened to be her father at that time.
That aside, it is time to set his plan into action.
[ I'm fine. Thank you! Is there anything, you need of me? I'll answer as great as I am able to.] Scp-079 offered as gentle and pleasing as a computer can muster.
"Oh, yes! I have loads of it, if you don't mind.", she replied starry eyed with excitement running through her blood at his offer.
Well, she knew it the foundation are screw ups. They lacked tact, when it comes with treating their A.I right.

5 tips for SEO-friendly blog post
For some, writing for search engine optimization functions and writing to draw and captivate your audience look like conflicting desires. I absolutely disagree. Positive, the phrases you need to be determined for ought to be in a prominent area in case you need an SEO-optimized blog to publish. However, over-the usage of key phrases critically hampers the readability of your text, which you certainly don’t need to do. In reality, an excessive keyphrase density can even be a signal to google that you might be stuffing keywords into your text, which could negatively have an effect on your scores.
This post provides pointers on writing weblog posts that can be search engine optimization-friendly and readable. Those two goals have to usually pass hand in hand as we believe that writing in comprehensible language gets you more visitors and continues them for your website online. All these tips are being used by well-known SEO Company around the globe.
Before you start: do keyword research
Before you begin writing, you need to do keyword research. In case you want to dominate the quest effects, you’ll parent out which words your target market honestly searches for. These are the topics you have to write about and the keywords you should use for your text. While you’ve carried out your keyword studies and have a list of consciousness key phrases to jot down, it’s time to get on with writing.
Here are 5 tips that will help you turn out to be a splendid weblog submission shared by the best SEO Company in Noida!
Writing Tips for SEO Pleasant Blog Post
mainly, your blog post has to be an amazing piece of writing. Whilst starting a brand new blog post, many bloggers simply begin writing, typing something that comes into their heads. Whilst this can paint for a few people who've natural writing talents, others can also want a little help. For my part, I always observe those ‘rules’ when I write a new blog.
1. Assume before you write
Before you start, think carefully approximately the message of your piece. What do you want to inform your readers, or which primary query do you want to answer? What’s the cause of your article? And what do you want your readers to do at the top of the web page? Write down the answers to those questions before you start and consider the search reason a person may have. An easy way to get an insight into this is via searching at the search consequences for the quest term you need to rank with.
2. Devise a shape for your post
To put in writing a readable and search engine optimization-pleasant blog post, you want to create a clean shape. This means that each publication has to have: some sort of creation (in which you introduce your subject matter); a frame (in which the main message is written); an end (in which you summarize the primary thoughts or draw a conclusion). In a few sentences, write down what you need to say in all three sections. You’ve now created a precis of your submission. This will help you create an established and readable weblog put up. Now real writing can start.
3. Use paragraphs and headings
Every person makes use of paragraphs, but now not anyone uses them nicely. Don’t begin each new sentence on a new line just because it appears exceptional. Also, strive no longer to cause them to be too prolonged, as every paragraph needs to have its very own idea or situation. Ask yourself what the primary concept of every paragraph is. You must be capable of summarizing that most important idea in one sentence. If that’s now not viable and you want greater sentences to provide an explanation for the primary idea, you in reality want to apply extra paragraphs. Right headings also help your readers apprehend what a specific part of your textual content is set. In case you want human beings to discover their manner via your articles, use subheadings to lead them. Subheadings assist readers to experiment with your web page and make clear the structure of your articles. They’re not simply essential for readability, but for SEO as properly. That’s why I would also endorse the use of your keyword in a number of subheadings. I do mean some of them, as the use of your keyword in every heading will make the text clunky and unnatural. This can position people off analyzing similarly.
4. Use transition words
Transition words help human beings experiment through textual content and apprehend the connection between sentences and paragraphs. As an example, let’s say that there are three reasons for human beings to shop for your product. You need to use sign words like: ‘initially’; ‘secondly’ and ‘subsequently’. Additionally, words like ‘however’, ‘further’, and ‘as an example deliver a clean signal to your readers. Readers will immediately get that an end will comply with phrases like ‘to sum up or ‘in brief’. Transition words are therefore very important to add structure to your textual content.
5. Use related key phrases
Stuffing your article with your consciousness keyword makes it much less attractive to read, and it is able to additionally harm your rankings. Google is getting smarter, and it wants you to write down content that users will love. It doesn’t want you to use your cognizance keyword in every other sentence and has different approaches to research what your textual content is ready. One of the approaches that google understand the topic of your text is by means of spotting synonyms and other key phrases that are related to your recognition keyphrase. That’s why you ought to use synonyms and related key phrases during your copy.

Blog Post #4 Due 9/16
Q1: Why do names have an impact on our lives?
When we are brought into this world, we are given names by our parents. These name have meaning to them within families such as being named after your great grandfather Charles who fought in WW2. In society these names also play a role in our lives and depending on what name your were given. For example Benjamin states “ “Alice Tang” comes from a family that values education and is expected to do well in math and science. “Tyrone Jackson” hails from a neighborhood where survival trumps scholastics; and he is expected to excel in sports.” The names given to us already give you a set role once you are born. Certain name can have social status affiliated with it giving them privileges while some can have have no meaning at all. it is almost as animals are labeled in a farm, One cow may provide more than the others and thus that cow is more valuable and place in high regard. These are what Benjamin refers to as “the new Jim Crow Codes” in “Race after Technology”. Even in names we are objectified and racially stereotyped. This type of misunderstanding leads to many not getting hired or placed on a watch list because their name is affiliated with racial stereotype.
Q2: How do the online algorithms affect the way we view POCs?
Today’s society is still facing issues such as racial algorithms online, however it gotten a much more better than it was in the past. The way people get their information is still the same as the past, however we are being more and more reliant on getting our information from technology. With that in mind, children, teens or anybody who is most vulnerable to believing what they are told get all their information from the web and with racial algorithms still lurking around this can really affect the way they view POCs. For example, Noble explains “In just a few minutes while searching on the web, I experienced the perfect storm of insult and injury that I could not turn away from. While Googling things on the Internet that might be interesting to my stepdaughter and nieces, I was overtaken by the results. My search on the keywords “black girls” yielded HotBlackPussy.com as the first hit.” If Noble was not the one to pull this up but it was her daughters, interested in “what black girls do” or whatever it maybe, this would not only be blinding as a child but it can make them believe that their role in the future is to be a “pornstar”. This is just one example of many, another example maybe when you search up Asians and it may say “sweatshop workers” or Mexicans saying “beaners”, anybody could believe what the online algorithm tells them and will address Asians and Mexican as what they found on the web.
Q3: How has google “fixed” it prior issues in the past with its online algorithms?
Google, the web browser that many today use to browse for anything, had issues in the past. Some of these issues were it’s absurd online algorithms, this is not to say the algorithms now are great either but in the past they racially discriminated against POCs as Noble states “The first problem for Google was that its photo application had automatically tagged African Americans as "apes” and "animals.” The second major issue reported by the Post was that Google Maps searches on the word "N*gger” led to a map of the White House during Obama’s presideney, a story that went viral on the Internet after the social media personality Deray McKesson tweeted it.” In the article Noble further explains that Google took down an image labeling Michelle Obama as an “ape” and also took down the slurred White House search.
Q4: What are some ways we can spread the awareness of Intersectionality?
Before answering that question, we need to understand just what is “Intersectionality”? Well, Intersectionality is the combined discrimination involving race and gender as explained by Kimberlé Crenshaw. For example, a case involving intersectionality as it problem would go like a African American women trying to get a job at a restaurant but is denied the job while an African American male and white woman are hired one after the other. It almost seems like there is nothing wrong with the situation and everything looks quite normal until you pay attention closely. This is a issue regarding intersectionality where there is a colored male hired so surely it is not discrimination by race and a white woman is hired so the employer is not being sexist so what is wrong? Well the problem is that there are little to almost no colored women being hire at this restaurant and that is what intersectionality is all about. Now as for how we can spread awareness to intersectionality, is that we can use our voices to support and spread the word to families, friends, and people you may know. Another way could be, being supportive of people whom, are of different communities, just being there, lending an ear or speaking out for them if they are facing public discrimination based on their race and gender. Other ways may include being respectful whenever you have a casual conversation with anybody, being aware that their background may be different or just have an open mind when socializing with them so you do not overstep any bounds or come off as offensive. Always remember actions speak louder than words.

SEO Prediction 2022: What is the future of SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become one of the most used content marketing techniques in the world. The best SEO company in Chennaiand all other cities depends on SEO techniques to ensure their clients get organic engagement and conversion rates. However, as the algorithm of search engines changes and is optimized, the future of SEO will also change accordingly. In this article, we’ve discussed the possible future of SEO in 2022.
What are the future trends of SEO?
Beyond link-building
Content marketers depend heavily on traditional link-building methods to increase inbound links. The increased inbound link increases the SEO score of the website by increasing organic interest. SEO companies like Domancier often provide multiple link-building avenues to customers. However, as the algorithm of search engines changes, SEO will have to look beyond link-building to improve the scores of websites.
People taken over by robots
Automation is expected to take over all parts of the industry. Automation has already been introduced as an optimization tool in SEO, where it is often used to keep track of when the website needs to be updated. However, as machine learning tools are further integrated, these manual tasks may be simplified.
Long-form content to improve SERPs
In the past decade, short-form content of 500-750 words prevailed. However, in 2022, long-form content is expected to make a comeback. Search Engine Results Page will be populated by content with 2000+ words that will provide more comprehensive information and be more authentic, increasing organic views and SEO scores.
Featured snippets will become more prominent
Google has already rolled out featured snippets for various websites. However, in 2022, this technology is expected to become more prominent. Featured snippets are currently being shown for statistics and direct answers. However, as this feature is rolled out, websites will have to optimize their content with numbers and to-the-point answers to get featured.
Since the world is shifting from text-based search to voice-based search, being featured in snippets will directly correlate to the amount of engagement a website receives.
Improvement of predictive search
Predictive search is easily one of the most commonly used search methods by the general public. However, often, it hasn’t been effective. In the upcoming update of Google’s algorithm, this is expected to change. An improvement in predictive search means google will improve its auto-fill function. Therefore, websites will have to re-optimize their content according to these new standards.
Image optimization to play a large role in search
SEO experts predict that an image optimization is a tool that will be rolled out in 2022. Search engine results will rely more heavily on images provided by the website. Therefore, websites with high-quality, relevant, and creative images are bound to take the first preference according to this update.
These are the SEO trends that we can expect in 2022. As the world shifts to a new search method, traditional short-form content with keyword stuffing can no longer be used. As many of the best SEO companies in Chennai have predicted, the shift towards automation is coming, and to be featured on the top SERP, websites have to adapt to new trends.

The Journal of Fandom Studies
Volume 1, Number 2, 1 October 2013
Augmenting fan/academic dialogue: New directions in fan research by Paul Booth [DePaul University]
Fan studies as a discipline is still in its infancy. But even given this nascence, there have been significant shifts in the ways that it has theorized, studied and investigated fans over the first two and a half decades of research. As scholarship, fan studies has moved away from ethnographic investigations of fans as the main object of study to focus instead on the output of fan discourse as the key mode of examination. At the same time, scholars like Henry Jenkins and Matt Hills, both central to the discipline, have opened dialogue about the nature of the fan/academic, often called the ‘aca-fan’. This article uses the lens of aca-fandom to analyse fan answers to interview questions at a large Midwestern Doctor Who convention. Fans were asked about the role that fan studies has played in their life, how they perceive the study of fans and whether fan studies as an academic discipline has an effect on their fandom. The fans’ answers reflect a critical awareness of fandom but a general ignorance of fan studies. This article argues three points to take away from this. First, fan studies needs to refocus attention back onto fans themselves through ethnographic work. Second, the discipline needs to refocus its output less on esoteric academic titles and more on popular venues. Finally, fans and academics should engage in specific dialogue to open up avenues for new fannish and academic exploration.
A case of identity: Role playing, social media and BBC Sherlock by Ann McClellan [Plymouth State University]
Many fans of Sherlock Holmes are now extending their interest in the famous sleuth into the world of social media. In particular, the BBC’s modern adaptation, Sherlock, seems to have grabbed the public’s attention with multiple character role plays on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. It remains unclear, however, whether to categorize these narratives as fan fiction or role play game. This article explores the genre differences between fan fiction and role play game and identifies specific genre characteristics that place social media fan narratives in the role play game category. While adaptation studies and much of fan fiction center on issues of fidelity to the source text, role play scholarship emphasizes recreating the world of the sourcetext. Role playing both expands the boundaries of the original series in that it provides viewers with more—more stories, more character development, more adventure—but it is also limited by the constraints of the original show’s characterization and overall narrative arc. Online role play characters must speak like their source characters, they must interact with other characters from the show in textually appropriate ways, and they must respond to new situations in ways that are consistent with their televisual counterparts. Looking specifically at BBC Sherlock role plays on Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter, this article explores the ways in which contemporary audiences are using social media to challenge traditional understandings of genre, world building and fandom in order to approach a greater verisimilitude of play.
‘Drinking the Kool-Aid’ of cult TV: Fans, followers, and fringe religions in Strangers with Candy and Veronica Mars by David Scott Diffrient [Colorado State University]
This article explores episodes of the contemporary American television programmes Strangers with Candy (Comedy Central, 1999–2000) and Veronica Mars (UPN/CW, 2004–07) so as to ascertain and discursively frame the complex relationship between cults (or neo-religious organizations) and cult TV. Although different from one another in many respects, these two TV series share an interest in the cliquish formations of high-school life that divide students into warring camps of insiders and outsiders. Moreover, both programmes contain pivotal episodes in which the ritualistic practices of fictional cults are presented ambivalently – as a source of humour yet also as a gateway through which the unconventional female protagonists pass on their way to self-discovery. That journey has extraordinary resonance for fans or ‘followers’ of these programmes. As argued by Jonathan Gray in his recently published work on ‘affect, fantasy, and meaning’, fans and followers are viewers who are ‘most involved in their consumption’. As such, Strangers with Candy and Veronica Mars deserve scrutiny as steadfastly worshipped texts conducive to the kinds of meta-consumptive discourses and practices that might shed light on culturally entrenched attitudes related to neo-religious activities.
Community clip show: Examining the recursive collaboration between producers and viewers of a postmodern sitcom by Rekha Sharma [Kent State University]
In the new media landscape, exclusive communication within a TV show’s creative team or amongst its fans is no longer sufficient to maintain the continuation of the programme. Instead, a community arises through the collaboration of those behind the scenes and those in front of the screens. By utilizing interactive technologies, showrunners and audiences have redefined notions of media consumption and mass media. An illustrative case is NBC’s postmodern sitcom, Community (Harmon, 2009–). The show features metadiscourse on media production, responds to viewers’ feedback and preferred narratives and shares the creation of meaning with the audience. As a result, the show has developed an ardent following because viewers feel their concerns are directly addressed by the show’s creative team. Further, their contributions challenge the conventional belief that fan interpretations are merely secondary discourse to the primary television text, as Community fans’ works have helped shape the televised narrative. One episode, Season 2’s ‘Paradigms of Human Memory’, deals with the creators’ and viewers’ mutual conceptualization of time and reality encapsulated in the series.
‘I’m not a lawyer but …’: Fan disclaimers and claims against copyright law by Jenny Roth and Monica Flegel [Lakehead University]
Fan fiction has become increasingly widespread, and online discussions between fans about fan fiction and copyright reveal the extent to which fans are both governed by and resist copyright law, as they understand it. As complex agents both within and outside of law, writers and supporters of fan fiction reveal the problems of speaking against law from a position that is regulated by law, a position creative re-producers are forced to occupy in an increasingly copyrighted, patented and trademarked world. So long as those whom the law is meant to regulate see themselves as legitimate shapers of that law, even though they inhabit space outside the formal mechanisms of law or the legal world, the law will not be effective. When fans with little or no legal expertise invoke and interpret copyright, they reveal that copyright does not attend to the complex realities of creative production, nor the very active consumption, engagement with, and re-articulation of cultural artefacts and texts in society to effectively police at the grassroots level.
Continuing The West Wing in 140 characters or less: Improvised simulation on Twitter by Inger-Lise Kalviknes Bore and Jonathan Hickman [Birmingham City University]
Sharing some of the findings from a study of fans tweeting as characters from US TV drama The West Wing (NBC, 2000–2006), this article uses data from Twitter observation and fan interviews to examine how participants negotiated the structures of Twitter through this activity. In particular, we consider what implications that negotiation has for the resulting fan text; for how participants perform fandom through this medium; and for how they perceive the value of their fan practice. Through this investigation, the article demonstrates some of the ways in which Twitter facilitates and constrains articulations of audience engagement.

A Comprehensive and Easy-to-Digest Guide to Google Ads Budgeting

Budgeting is always a tedious task. Whether you are saving bucks to pay your rent for an overpriced apartment or paving your way to the internet realm, or both at the same time, it pushes the average person into a strenuous situation.
While there are some ways to lighten this insanity, there’s no way to avoid budgeting appropriately without crippling yourself in the future entirely. That’s particularly the case with Google Ads, where each click either represents your business growth or your hard-earned money turning into paper.
Moreover, unfortunately, there are scarce resources that take a comprehensive approach to Google Ads budgeting. So it means you will have to fathom it yourself.
This guide will discuss everything you need to know about proper PPC budgeting strategy from scratch. To make things a bit easier, we have divided this entire guide into three easily digestible parts:
Deciding your initial Google Ads budget
Allocating spend across different search campaign types
Budgeting for everything else Google Ads offers
So without wasting another moment, let’s dive into the details, shall we?
1. DECIDING YOUR INITIAL GOOGLE ADS BUDGET
Let’s say you have handed over your credit card details, funded your Google Ads account, and have also installed Google Ads Editor. But what next?
Now you have to ascertain your total expenditure in the first quarter. And by that, we don’t mean month, week, day, or even hour. We mean the first click on your ad.
While deciding your initial Google Ads budget, you should ask yourself these primary questions:
How do Google Ads fit in your existing marketing strategy?
What and where are your competitors spending their budget currently?
What is the cost-per-click of the keywords you are bidding on at the moment?
Which key performance indicators do you care about the most?
Once you find answers to all these questions, you will be all set to jump into the different types of campaigns, their optimization, and ultimately expansion. Keeping this in mind, let us dive into these questions now.
How Do Google Ads Align With Your Existing Marketing Strategy?
In case your business is the local community’s basic necessity or enjoys a thriving online presence (i.e., you’re a thought leader in your industry bringing loads of organic traffic to your website with good SEO and content writing), there’s a high probability that your leads will arrive at your door themselves willing to purchase. On the contrary, a business in the making that has its finger on its target audience’s pulse can accomplish something similar via a diehard social following. Moreover, this organic traffic is essentially “free of cost,” aside from the time and efforts of whoever leads these efforts, of course.
Also, think about the different marketing channels you use with the purpose of growing your business. These channels might include commercials, radio ads, billboards, and so on.
Write down all the marketing channels you employ and ask yourself: is the goal of my Google Ads account to reinforce my current efforts or supplant them?
What and Where Are Your Competitors Spending Their Budget Currently?
Go ahead and perform a Google search for your brand’s name right away. What appears at the top of the search results page?
Unless you are new to Google Adwords, your answer should be our optimized-to-the-gills branded advertisements. Nevertheless, if you happen to be a novice, a gambler would bet that the SERP is filled with your competitors.
Other than your branded keywords, there are several tools (such as Google Keyword Planner) you can use to get a sense of what and where your competitors are spending their advertising budget.
With this data at your disposal, you can quickly build strategies to dethrone your competitors’ ads from the top positions in the search results and discover (less expensive) keywords that no one else was intelligent enough to bid on before you turned up.
What Is the Cost-per-Click of the Keywords You Are Bidding on at the Moment?
Remember the tools we mentioned in the above section? Well, it’s time to put them to use once again.
One of the most elementary ways to decide your advertising budget is to weigh up the CPC of the keywords you are bidding on currently. Is this information enough on its own when it comes to determining a budget? Of course, not. But it does give a good starting point.
Visit Google Keyword Planner and in the left interface, fill in one of your landing pages. Modify the rest of the parameters, including location, industry, terms to avoid, etc., accordingly and browse through the lists of potential keywords together with their comparative popularity and advertiser competition.
Now try the same with the pages that relate to all the products or services your business offers. It will undoubtedly unveil some underrated search phrases that you can place your bids on next. Preferably, you want to search for as many high-traffic and low-competition keywords with commercial intent as possible. That’s how you’ll find your sweet spot.
We will take a deeper dive into this in some time. But it all comes down to this: keywords suggesting affinity or urgency tend to convert more compared to terms that don’t. Moreover, a branded search term communicates more intent than a competitor term. For example, the search phrase “cab from boston to brookline midnight” conveys way more urgency (and is hence more valuable) than “cab service,” although its search volume might be notably lesser.
Which Key Performance Indicators Do You Care About the Most?
As they say, save the best for the last. This is the most crucial question you need to ask yourself. A key performance indicator can be defined as a measurable value that allows an individual or business to measure performance. As a matter of fact, not all businesses give the same level of importance to the same thing.
For some businesses, cost per acquisition is the lifeblood. You wouldn’t believe the number of initial calls that starts with a cost per acquisition plucked out of thin air. If you are confident that this is the key performance indicator for your business, fix a goal rooted in logic. However, if something more concrete suits your style better, you can ascertain, on average, how many conversions it takes to result in an actual customer (tracked via Google Ads) and figure out your real cost per acquisition. However, you can also leverage your current cost per acquisition from other channels, set it as a goal for paid search and accordingly increase or decrease as you get your hands on more data over time.
Additionally, businesses utilize several other key performance indicators as barometers for effective Google Ads campaigns. So, in the end, it’s up to you to figure out which one is best for your business.
Once you answer all four of these questions successfully, check out your discoveries. To decide your budget, you will want to consider the key performance indicators that you plan to judge your performance on, along with the number of leads or sales you are hoping to gather from Google Ads. Check out the other marketing channels you are employing and try to implement any related goals you have set as your starting point for Google Ads. At last, weigh up the CPC of keywords that you will probably bid on by analyzing the ones that your competitors have picked already (and also the ones they haven’t yet).
Key Takeaways:
Leverage data from your existing marketing efforts in order to inform the structure and budget of your Google Ads account.
Use keyword research and competitor analysis to decrease your learning curve and get the ball rolling.
Ascertain your budget by determining the key performance indicators that matter the most to you and working in reverse from the figures representing profitability.
2. ALLOCATING SPEND ACROSS DIFFERENT SEARCH CAMPAIGN TYPES
In general terms, all your Google Ads search campaigns will come under one of these five categories: research, top performers, high intent, competitor, and branded. While all these classifications are adaptable, some of them are outright liquid.
Logic says that you should feed most of your Google Ads budget to your top-performing search terms. But what about the remaining of them?
Top-of-the-Funnel Keywords
Often, a novice will build PPC campaigns targeting top-of-the-funnel keywords. For example, an enterprising yet acutely under-informed chartered public accountant will bid on the keyword “chartered public accountant.” And it sounds logical, right?
But unfortunately, in the majority of the industries, such keywords will mostly cost you a fortune. For some terms, the price can easily be more than $50 a click! However, that’s not necessarily the case with all industries and keywords. Now that we have made our point, you need to find out if your vertical is overflowing with soaring CPCs. However, the biggest problem with such keywords is not even the price; it’s the intent.
To provide you with a little context, let’s suppose you are a disorganized upstart in the business card industry which happens to be extremely competitive. When you look for keywords with the most average monthly searches, you find the search phrase “business cards” at the top position. But think about the users searching for this term – most of them will be wantrepreneurs who will never complete an order. So instead of spending those couple of dollars here, you will want to spend them on keywords that communicate intent better, such as “buy business cards” or a bit more costly but more commercial “order business cards.”
Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that top-of-the-funnel terms are necessarily expensive or worthless. Such keywords are undoubtedly an incredible way to generate brand awareness and incorporate more prospects into your remarketing list. So if you do choose to bid on these, make sure you do it smartly. Pick a less pricey keyword such as “free business cards,” add the prospects to your list and remarket to them.
Branded Keywords
For some confusing and unfathomable reason, using branded keywords is usually disputed. But that’s silly.
Although your site must be the first thing that appears in the organic search results when a user Googles your business, there’s also a massive piece of real estate above the organic listings that your competitors are free to claim, if, of course, you don’t do it first.
Think of this: your competitors are made to pay a premium if they want to bid on your brand, but the cost-per-click you will see for the same keywords will be much cheaper. That’s because your landing page ad copy and domain are going to be hyper-relevant to the terms, leading to maximized Quality Score and thus lower CPCs.
Long story short, though branded keywords should in no way be the only terms you bid on, allocating spend to secure SERP domination is necessary.
Competitor Keywords
Recall everything we discussed regarding branded keywords. Now the opposite stands true when it comes to bidding on competitor keywords. What we did with the top-of-the-funnel keywords is exactly what you will want to do here – make use of research and common sense to make sure you are not merely burning your Google Ads budget on terms that won’t ever convert.
One of the biggest blunders that advertisers often make here is that they bid on the wrong competitor keywords. When picking competitor keywords to bid on, as a rule of thumb, ensure that you select actual competitors that you’re truly contending against. Pick competitors who you believe you have a competitive edge over, whether it is – better features, prices, quality, or anything else.

High-Intent Keywords
If top-of-the-funnel keywords are an expensive wild goose chase, think of high-intent keywords as golden eggs dropped into your lap.
High-intent terms are available in two flavors – “buy now” and “product/service.” You will want to make sure that you’re using the largest chunk of your Google Ads budget to bid on keywords that come under one of these classifications (extra points if you are able to unveil keywords that exist somewhere in the middle).
In general terms, “buy now” keywords are the ones that suggest that a potential customer is prepared to make the final decision about your product/service. They have either completed their research or been referred by a close friend, and now it is time to purchase. Usually, these “buy now” terms consist of top-of-the-funnel keywords joined with terms such as buy, free shipping, discount, coupon, deal, and so on.
For more clarity on how research is different from the intent to buy, pick any random keywords, say “summer dresses.” Check out the keyword “summer dresses,” followed by the various “buy now” iterations.
Needless to say, the search volume for “summer dresses” will be dramatically higher compared to the other terms. But those other terms convey more intent to purchase.
On the other hand, the “product/service” terms comprise:
Branded searches
Particular products/services (Samsung TV, car maintenance)
Categories of products (winter outfits, travel accessories)
Top
Best
Cheapest
Comparison
Affordable, and so on
While this is a much wider category, not all types of product/service terms will turn into a top-converting keyword for you.
Having said that, the only way to ascertain what does not work for your business is to try out everything as consciously as possible. If something drains your account, stop it right away, but if it converts at a CPA (cost per acquisition) considerably below the account average, you have got your hands on the best converter.
Top Performers
After operating your Google Ads account for at least a month, you will get a good sense of the keywords that are and aren’t worth spending your budget on. The middling keywords for which your ads show up consistently but never appear to acquire clicks illustrate opportunity. Zero in on producing a decent ad copy for such terms. Introduce a few modifications to your landing page. And double, triple-check your ad extensions. In case, after a couple of weeks, you still don’t get any clicks (or even worse, you get clicks but no conversions), eliminate those keywords.
Transferring your top-performing terms into their own ad campaign(s) will help you gain increased control over how much portion of your overall budget is used up for keywords that have performed well earlier. Wondering what the advantage is? The single converting term will no longer be thrown in with ten other keywords that do nothing except draining your budget.
Caution: By removing a keyword from its original ad group, you lose. Since, in this scenario, the Google Ad account is rather new, it sounds more logical to transfer your underperforming terms into new campaigns.
Now, the main question is: how exactly are you going to divide your paid search budget among these campaigns?
Ideally, you should spend most of your budget on those terms with the best shot at converting. Here branded keywords are the exception. Even though branded terms illustrate intent (familiarity), they have alow ceiling and don’t inevitably reflect “brand new” customers. Therefore, when it comes to your branded keywords while dominating your competition is crucial, owing to the relatively lower search volume and maximized Quality Scores, your overall Google ads budget should be most deliberately focused on those high-intent “buy now” and “product/service” terms.
Also, keep in mind that these categories are liquid (as mentioned earlier). While high-intent keywords should ideally be your top performers, that might not be the case always. Each ad account, each niche is different. Whenever in doubt, check out your existing data carefully and then make changes accordingly.
Key Takeaways:
Concentrate most of your budget on high-intent terms, including branded keywords.
Top-of-the-funnel keywords can dig a hole in your pocket. Remember, there are much better and affordable ways to reach a broader audience.
Fine-tune your budget allocation every week to secure maximum return on investment (ROI).
3. BUDGETING FOR EVERYTHING ELSE GOOGLE ADS OFFERS
While the search is the heart and soul of most Google Ads accounts, the platform does provide the advertisers with some other alternatives as well, including the display and remarketing (often via display, though remarketing on search can be fruitful too).
Based on your respective vertical, these options can complement or even entirely replace traditional search advertising. In any case, these can dramatically affect how you spend your money on Google Ads. To clarify, let’s dive into the details.
Display
While the clicks here are cheaper compared to traditional search, with the substantial drop off in direct conversions, the real question is: Is the GDN worth it?
Short answer – yes, a million times, YES!
Remember everything we talked about “intent” previously in this post? When using the GDN (Google Display Network), users viewing your ads don’t really have much of it. The display is much more similar to conventional advertising (imagine billboards) than traditional search, but of course, with the added advantages of on-demand analytics and better ad targeting.
Apart from remarketing, the GDN has three primary functions – generating brand awareness, displaying your product, and supporting a long sales process. It also makes loads of targeting options available to you. Wondering what’s the catch here?
However, the lack of conversions that can be directly attributable to the Google Display Network can make it hard to justify, particularly for small businesses that have limited budgets. With that said, there are still a few ways you can get started with GDN without setting your hard-earned money on fire.
When trying to dip your toes in the GDN, it is recommended to start with in-market audiences or managed ad placements. Long story short, this enables you to display banner creative on particular sites or to users whose web browsing history suggests that their interests align with what you are offering.
Once you get successful in this, you can then employ some other strategies and expand your Display budget to build the ideal complementary network strategy.
Remarketing
Remarketing is indeed a vital element of Google Ads. All businesses regardless of their vertical, can benefit from using it.
One of the best and easiest ways to ascertain your initial remarketing budget is to evaluate the percentage of total conversions originating from returning website visitors and then allocate the same percentage of your budget to remarketing. Sounds too abstract? No worries, let us take a look at an example.
Suppose you own an online clothing store. Last week, you collected 1000 clicks and sold 100 summer dresses on Google Ads. As per findings, 10 of those dresses were bought by returning site visitors. Now allocating 10% of your search budget to remarketing provides you with the opportunity to drive those remaining 900 non-converting visitors back to your site.
However, some account managers are against remarketing simply because, at the core, it means paying money to drive the same people back to your website numerous times. But don’t you think that it is better than the given people never converting or, even worse, purchasing something from your competitor instead? In addition to this, returning visitors tend to convert more than the new ones.
Key Takeaways:
Remarketing (dynamic remarketing in particular) isn’t optional. Make the most out of your budget by persuading more site visitors to convert.
Allow the GDN to take care of your top-of-the-funnel work so as to save your search budget for more qualified leads.
WRAPPING IT UP
Finally, this comprehensive guide to Google Ads budgeting has reached its end.
By now, you have efficiently figured out your starting point and consciously allocated spend to different search campaigns, and started expanding your overall budget to include everything that Google Ads offers you.
Apart from the eventual optimization, which is essential if you wish to get the most out of your Google Ads budget, you can also extend your advertising efforts to other platforms. Even though opting for Bing Ads sounds like the most logical step to take next, you may find Facebook or LinkedIn Ads pretty beneficial for your business as well.
That was all you needed to know about proper Google Ads budgeting. So what are you waiting for now? Go ahead and get started with it!
Happy advertising!
