World building dump #2 - LEM Hearing

Lotus Eared Macaques can hear the past and the future, they can determine truth from lies, hear the dead when spirits are close. It is extremely rare for a LEM to be born with the ability to hear all these things very accurately, they do all have supernaturally enhanced hearing of the present.

Macaque is one of these gifted LEMs, it was one of the reasons LBD wanted him so badly.

The vast majority of them have things they are better at hearing and things they are worse at, and they can work on their weaknesses to improve them regardless of their amount of ears.

Six eared LEMs tend to be able to hear with more clarity from all the categories, but they typically have a strong suite they hear best in.

This is why six eared LEMs were so heavily targeted by hunters, they were already less common than four or two eared LEMs, so they were worth a lot more.

World building dump #1 - Ear Coverings

I want to ramble about Rotten Fruit but I want the rambles to make sense so this is it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you are unaware, a Lotus Eared Macaque is the kind of monkey demon Macaque is.

Ramble time!

Lotus Eared Macaques started wearing bonnets and head scarves to hide their ears so they wouldn't be targeted by hunters, free monkey demons picked up on it and joined in solidarity with them.

Most hunters would be looking for the ears, and didn't know the other traits LEMs had, darker fur, purple to pink face masks etc, wouldn't be able to identify them. Other species and troops of monkey demons could have darker fur and those colors of face masks, the only sure way to know was to see the ears.

Specialized LEM hunters, back when those were a legally supported thing, would be able to pick out a monkey demon from a LEM, but the coverings helped them stay under the radar better.

The bonnets and head scarves became part of monkey demon culture after long enough time, they are handmade by a family or troop member for the individual and all cubs wear them whenever they leave their homes until they are at least in their 20s.

If someone in your troop is expecting a baby, you cover your ears to not give away whether or not the baby could be a LEM, since the lotus ears are the dominant trait, everyone knows if one parent is a LEM, the baby will be too.

World Building Dump #5 - LEM Hunting (and Macaque lore)

LEMs have been hunted and sought after for thousands of years, and that was not going to stop without some serious effort.

The demon trade was officially illegal, but demon trafficking is still rampant, and LEMs still found themselves getting hunted and trafficked. And hunting/trafficking LEMs isn't explicitly illegal since so many people in power benefit from it, either getting paid big bucks to let it happen, or they can get their own LEM.

Sometimes it's hunting them down to be “trained” and sold to the high society Immortals who one, sometimes it's trophy hunting for their ears, the only way to keep the glow is cut them off while they are still alive, and then either kill them, or use the now earless monkey to make some baby LEMs to be sold later.

Being targeted like this has gotten many LEMs killed to the point where they all have shadow magic because the ones who didn't have it strongly got killed, nothing like being hunted by literally everyone to force some speedy biological adaptations!

LEMs are good at shadow magic because that was their only sure way to survive.

Traffickers and LEM hunters are why Macaque's moms died, they were being hunted, because they were both six eared, very rare to find due to how sought after they were.

They ended up dying after taking sanctuary in a temple, one to the goddess Nuwa and her creation, Liu'er Mihou, The First Lotus Eared Macaque.

Liu'er Mihou is considered blasphemous and taboo for any LEM to use as a name, but LBD didn't care about that and renamed Macaque from Yinying Hua Chichi, to Liu'er Mihou.

World Building Dump #4 - Lotus Eared Macaque “Adoption”

LEMs were never legally considered slaves, even though they were being enslaved by whoever “owned” them. They were legally considered a child of whoever owned them, their "parent" clothed, taught, fed and cared for them like one, so they should be treated legally, as an adopted child. Even if they're an adult.

LEMs who are “adopted” are entered into a database of LEMs that are off limits to be trafficked or captured.

They have a tracker chip at the base of their tail that's used for identification, getting a chip is part of the adoption process.

Traffickers check any LEMs they catch for who their “family” is and will generally return them, the “family” of LEMs tend to be well off demons and Immortals, and they have trackers, so they get returned with an apology payment after being patched up from any injuries they suffered.

Sometimes traffickers/hunters sell LEMs to enemies of their "family", or they have been hired to kidnap an enemy's LEM.

It's so normalized that any LEM who isn't hiding their ears is considered to be "adopted", despite wearing headscarves not being expected when they are older, most LEMs wear them whenever they leave their homes.

I meant it when I said they get treated more like a pet than anything else. (Macaque had a slightly different case with LBD)

I finally finished the first chapter of Bitter Peach!

I rewrote it three times at least because it just wasn't working but I finally got it down and I'm so happy!

I got it done before I leave for a little trip tomorrow, hell yeah!

I gave Wukong a gun! for a few seconds, but he still had a gun and intended to shoot someone.

And I'm working on some doodles of baby Shadowpeach in Rotten Fruit, they are being so gay and doing so much crime, one of them is literally them about to beat someone up. They were in a gang.

The snakes have beef!

They have so much beef.

Understandably because Xiangliu orchestrated the death of the two kids Nuwa gave the power to fix the pillar of heaven to if anything went wrong when she wasn't there and she can't figure out what he did with them after.

Xiangliu just has mommy issues and took it out on two month old babies.

Nuwa is really fun to write in Grinning Shadow, she thinks she's helping, but oh boy, she is not.

And then in Cracked Family, Nuwa has knowledge she can't share and that makes all her interactions with the monkey family a little sad.

this was me last night.

It's such an interesting experience to write, Wukong and Macaque genuinely doing so good and they're loving, caring parents, but it doesn't matter.

No matter what they do or how good they are, they will end up doing a lot of damage to each other and their daughter, just because of who they are and how they deal with really difficult situations.

It's a tragedy for a reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

World building dump 3 - Monkey Demon Exploitation

Monkey demons as a group have had it rough, they are extremely animalistic for demons, they really are just short human sized, intelligent bipedal monkeys, and for the majority of history they were treated as animals, smart animals, but animals nonetheless.

Lots of regimes and governments have used monkey demons as a labor force throughout history since they were considered more disposable than their own mortal subjects, and using the convenient labor force of these weak demons that don't have offensive magic was preferable to overtaxing their own people and suffering from their people revolting.

No self respecting mortal would join in the rebellion of a class of work animals.

Enslaved monkey demons did not partake in the headscarf tradition, most laws prohibited enslaved monkey demons from ever covering their ears, to make it easier to distinguish free and enslaved monkey demons.

Any LEM that was discovered and captured would immediately be taken by whatever government or power was in the area. Trying to keep one for yourself instead of turning them in was extremely illegal and penalized, but turning a LEM in would get someone richly rewarded.

Enslaved LEMs are kept under strict watch, often forced to follow their “master” at all times. They would get treated more like a prized pet than a work animal.

Monkey demon slavery is banned now, but LEM slavery isn't because it was never considered slavery, even though it totally was.
