First i hated my last jobs in underground
mine gold mine and start thinking about
how it can affect my new son in the
future.
After take this step-back in my mind
I stop cyber-security because. I Just
realize. I didn't know how the deep structure work!
The journey begin at this moment.

10+1 VSCode extensions I can't live without

At my previous post I talked about VSCode and how you can change the way it works, by installing the extensions that you need, based on the way you prefer to work. I would like to propose you my 10+1 extensions that I mostly use.
Project Manager by Alessandro Fragnani
I use to work on multiple projects at the same period, and a way to organise and switch between them as fast as I can is really mandatory for me. Project Manager helps to easily create different projects inside VSCode and switch between them from the dedicated sidebar. You can open a project directly to a new VSCode window, if you want to.
VSNotes by Patrick Lee
VSNotes is a really simple tool that helps you keep notes for anything you want. I use it in conjunction with Project Manager and I keep notes per project. VSNotes uses Markdown files, and it has it's own sidebar which you can use to find the notes you are looking for.
You can use tags in those files, for organising them. You can set also a base path where these files will be saved. I usually set the .vscode/vsnotes folder inside each project and workspace. That method helps me find the notes that I am looking for really fast .
Markdown All in One by Yu Zhang
Markdown is a lightweight markup language, and a simple way to format a text, with bold, italic, code block, headers and images. It is used in many websites, like the github.com, the tumblr.com and many others.
This extension will help you on creating your files in Markdown, as it has some helpful keyboard shortcuts for text formatting and a great preview feature, which updates itself as soon as you change the content. You can use it with VSNotes to view your notes.
PHP Intelephense by Ben Mewburn
As a long time PHP developer, I use a few PHP extensions to help me on my day to day work. PHP Intelephense is one of my most used extensions, as it has features like a fast code completion, workspace wide go to definition and find all references of a method and many others. And everything work super-fast.
phpcs by Ioannis Kappas
This extension works constantly at the background and uses the (PHP Codesniffer)[https://github.com/squizlabs/PHP_CodeSniffer], if it is available on your system. It helps you improve your code, by detecting violations of coding standards on your PHP, Javascript and CSS code. This way you can be sure that your code will remain clean and consistent.
Before you use this extension, you have to have phpcs installed and running on your system. The configuration is easy and the results can be viewed at the "Problems" bar at the bottom section.
PHP Debug by Felix Becker
This extension uses the debug features of VSCode to provide debugging usability for PHP, based on xDebug. This way you can use breakpoint on specific lines, to pause PHP execution and check the values of variables, arrays, objects and the flow of the code execution. I really love the conditional breakpoints, were the code pauses only when the condition is fulfilled.
PHP Debug uses the sidebar to show all the information, as well as a popup over the variables, where you can quickly get the defined values. There is also a "Call Stack" section at the sidebar where you can see the methods/functions and the files that were called before your breakpoint and navigate to that code as well.
The configuration of this extension is easy and works well with remote and Docker containers.
Better PHPUnit by calebporzio
If you write PHP code, using a modern framework, I am sure you use automatic testing, and maybe you are using PHPUnit, which is the most used method. Better PHPUnit helps execute the unit tests inside the VSCode window, for the whole suite or only the methods you work on.
Supports local running of PHPUnit, remotely through SSH and inside Docker containers, which is my favourite. The configuration might be a little bit tricky, but it works really good, as soon as you figure out how it works.
GitLens bu Eric Amodio
VSCode supports and uses GIT excellent out of the box. GitLens gives you a lot more features, which are difficult to full cover here. The features I love most are the Code Lens, were you can get information on each line of the code of the last author, the commit where he last edited this line and the date. Also, at it's own sidebar you can find almost anything you want, like the local and remote branches, the available stashes and the used tags.
You can also get the file and line history as well as you can do some comparisons of your code with other branches or tags. There is a powerful search view where you can search and explore commit histories by message, author, files, id, etc..
This extension is huge and a must have, if you use GIT.
Todo Tree by Gruntfuggly
Todo Tree is a simple extension that finds TODO tags inside your code and shows them at the sidebar. This is helpful for me when I start building a whole new feature, where first of all, I create TODO comments in the code, and then I know exactly what I have... em... to do, obviously. This way I help remind me the next steps and the results I expect from specific parts of the code.
Also, based on the available time, I create TODO comments for the code that needs to be done in the future. With that extension, things like that are not lost inside the project files.
The extension lets you create your own tags and set the colour that will be used. At the sidebar you have a lot of different ways to list used tags, like to show them all together, or in a tree view, based on the files and folders.
EditorConfig for VS Code by EditorConfig
One more simple but must have extension, which attempts to override the workspace/user configuration and respect the .editorconfig rules on code format. This way you can be sure your code is consistent with your colleagues' code, as you write with the same indention, using the same tabs width, or using spaces. Don't miss this out when you work in a team.
Better Comments by Aaron Bond
Better Comments is a useful extension, that helps you create more human-friendly comments in your code. You can stylize your comments, using own tags and colours for every single line. Also, it supports generic tags, like TODO or @param, and make them standout beautifully.
This list is in no way complete, but I hope will be useful, and find an extension that will make your development days a plessure.

Introduction Learning how to code is a skill that will help you become more productive and competitive in the future. But it's not easy: many people struggle with it for years before they're able to make any useful contributions. So how do you go about learning coding? And what should you do after that? This guide will answer those questions and more! Where should you start? When you're learning to code, the first step is always the same: you have to pick a language. There are many options out there, but in my opinion it's best to start with the basics and work your way up from there. For example: if you want to learn how to write code using Visual Studio Code (a great editor for beginners), then start by setting up your text editor and installing extensions like Grammarly or keyboard shortcuts for common tasks. Once those are set up, move onto learning about how files work within VSCode—and then once that's settled down, see if there are any other resources available online that can help improve your understanding of these concepts even further! If this sounds like too much work at once (and it probably will), then consider taking advantage of local meetups where fellow developers come together every month or so; these groups usually host speakers who speak about their experiences working with specific technologies such as Ruby on Rails or ReactJS so that everyone gets something out of attending them regardless what level they currently operate at within tech fields like web development/designing websites etcetera." As a general rule of thumb, you should expect to spend at least half your time on learning new skills and technologies (and maybe more). If you're working solo or with one other person, it's likely that they will also be teaching themselves as well—which means there might not be much time for actual coding until later in the week when everyone has caught up with each other’s work (or if someone needs help with something). Think about what you want to accomplish when learning how to code. The first step in learning how to code is figuring out what you want to accomplish. If it's just for fun, then maybe some introductory courses will be enough. If your goal is more career-oriented, however, then it might make sense for you take a few more classes and become proficient with your chosen languages. In either case, don't forget that there are many different types of jobs available in the tech industry today—and not all require coding skills! In the VSCode Marketplace, code snippets for other flavors, such as Angular, are also readily available. The extension supports JS, TypeScript, JS React, TS React, HTML, and Vue. Once again, here’s the download link for the csharp snippets. While VSCode includes built-in JS IntelliSense, JS Code Snippets enhances that experience by adding a slew of import/export triggers, class helpers, and method triggers. For example, my Python code snippet will be written in the file python.json. Well, because I had a huge looming deadline for my next Pluralsight course, the only reasonable thing to do was to spend a day learning how to write VSCode Snippets and to write snippets for all the things that I missed from full Visual Studio 2017. In Visual Studio, you can use code snippets to add commonly-used code to your C++ code files. I kept doing all the CodeRush keyboard shortcuts in VSCode that I had ‘muscle memory’ for and (of course) they did nothing. The thing that really became clear once I started working a lot in VSCode was how much I relied on the CodeRush templates in Visual Studio 2017 - both the ones out of the box and the ones that I’d written - to get work done. So what did I do? I bought a MacBook Pro and made that my primary work machine. But I didn’t just want to learn it from Windows - the real power of. On the other hand, there is another tool that you can install. I tremendously speeds up the creating of a snippets from minutes to seconds -). NET Core and Visual Studio Code (VSCode). When you are creating your VSCode snippets, simply paste the text that you want to convert to a snippet to this tool, and you immediately get it converted to a JSON representation for a VSCode snippet. Scott Hanselman's 2021 Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
Can you believe it's been 6 years since my last Tools list? Tools have changed, a lot are online, but honestly, it's just a LOT OF WORK to do the tools list. But here's one for 2020-2021. These are the tools in my Utils folder. I made a d:\dropbox\utils folder and I added it to my PATH. That way it's on all my computers and in my path on all my computers and I can get to any of them instantly.
This is the Updated for 2020-21 Version of my 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2014 List, and currently subsumes all my other lists. I’ve been doing this for over 17 years. Wow. I need to do better, I guess. 
Everyone collects utilities, and most folks have a list of a few that they feel are indispensable.  Here's mine.  Each has a distinct purpose, and I probably touch each at least a few times a week.  For me, "util" means utilitarian and it means don't clutter my tray.  If it saves me time, and seamlessly integrates with my life, it's the bomb. Many/most are free some aren't. Those that aren't free are very likely worth your 30-day trial, and very likely worth your money.
These are all well loved and oft-used utilities.  I wouldn't recommend them if I didn't use them constantly. Things on this list are here because I dig them. No one paid money to be on this list and no money is accepted to be on this list.

Windows Subsystem for Linux - It really can't be overstated how WSL/WSL2 has put the cherry on top of Windows 10. It runs on any build 20262 or higher as it was recently backported and it's integration with Windows is fantastic. It's also WAY faster than running a VM. Go learn more on my YouTube
Windows Terminal - Finally Windows has a modern terminal. You can run shells like Command Prompt, PowerShell, and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Its main features include multiple tabs, panes, Unicode and UTF-8 character support, a GPU accelerated text rendering engine, and the ability to create your own themes and customize text, colors, backgrounds, and shortcuts. It also includes a pseudo-console so 3rd party Terminals like hyper, conemu, terminus and more work better!
Windows PowerToys - They are back and they should be built into Windows. Install them here and get a color picker, fancy zones, file explorer addons, image resizers, keyboard manager and remapper, an Apple Spotlight-like running in the form of PowerToyrs Run, the Shortcut Guide and more!

VS Code - Visual Studio Code is hella fast and is my goto text and code editor. I still use notepad sometimes and I'm in full Visual Studio a lot, but VS Code is like the Tesla of code editors. Check out my Favorite VS Code Extensions below.
PowerShell/OhMyPosh/PoshGit/Cascadia Code - I've had a blast this year taking my console prompt to the next level. Try these out but also look at Starship. Whatever you do, play! Don't accept the defaults!
ZoomIt - A true classic but also the answer to the #1 question I'm asked. How do you draw on the screen when you're sharing your screen? ZoomIt has been THAT TOOL in my toolbox. Really take some time and learn how to do boxes, arrows, colors and more and you'll be a more effective screen-sharer. In fact, just go get the whole SysInternals suite and put it all in your PATH.
Winget - It's apt-get for Windows. Similar to choco which I've used in the past, WinGet is going to be included in Windows 10 and has a ton of nice features. I use it to setup a machine in an hour from the command line, versus a day before doing it manually. Just add your MSA (Microsoft login) to the Package Manager Insiders Program and get it from the Store. It's bundled with the Windows App Installer. Then just "winget search <tool>" and winget install whatever!
QuickLook - Free in the Windows Store, just highlight a file in Explorer and press Space to get a preview!
Amazing .NET and Developer utilities

CodeTrack - CodeTrack is a free .NET Performance Profiler and Execution Analyzer. It works on basically every version of .NET and will give you massive insight into how your code is running! The flamegraph view is fantastic. It's free but you should donate as it's a one-person amazing app!
LINQPad - Interactively query your databases with LINQ with this tool from Joseph Albahari. A fantastic learning tool for those who are just getting into LINQ or for those who want a code snippet IDE to execute any C# or VB expression. Free and wonderful.
WinMerge - WinMerge just gets better and better. It's free, it's open source and it'll compare files and folders and help you merge your conflicted source code files like a champ. Also see Perforce Visual Merge which free and also can diff images, which is pretty amazing.
WinDbg - Low-level and classic but also new and fresh! WinDbg (Wind-bag?) is now in the Windows Store with ALL NEW VISUALS and more!
Insomnia and Nightingale are great alternatives to Postman for doing REST APIs!
NuGet Package Explorer - This app allows browsing NuGet packages from an online feed and viewing contents of the packages
WireShark - What's happening on the wire! WireShark knows!
GitHub Desktop - Gits, ahem, out of the way! Watch my Git 101 on YouTube!
Useful Windows Utilities that should be built in

Ear Trumpet - Fantastic advanced volume control for Windows! If you have ever wished that volume on Windows could turn their UI up to 11, Ear Trumpet is that app.
Teracopy - While I use the excellent built in copy features of Windows 10 the most, when I want to move a LOT of files as FAST as possible, nothing beats TeraCopy, an app that does just that - move stuff fast. The queue control is excellent.
AutoHotKey - This little gem is bananas. It's a tiny, amazingly fast free open-source utility for Windows. It lets you automate everything from keystrokes to mice. Programming for non-programmers. It's a complete automation system for Windows without the frustration of VBScript. This is the Windows equivalent of AppleScript for Windows. (That's a very good thing.
7-Zip - It's over and 7zip won. Time to get on board. The 7z format is fast becoming the compression format that choosey hardcore users choose. You'll typically get between 2% and 10% better compression than ZIP. This app integrates into Windows Explorer nicely and opens basically EVERYTHING you could ever want to open from TARs to ISOs, from RARs to CABs.
Paint.NET - The Paint Program that Microsoft forgot, written in .NET. It's 80% of Photoshop and it's free. Pay to support the author by getting the Windows Store version AND it will auto-update! It's only $7, which is an unreal value.
NimbleText - Regular Expressions are hard and I'm not very smart. NimbleText lets me do crazy stuff with large amounts of text without it hurting so much.
Markdown Monster - While I love VSCode, Markdown Monster does one thing incredibly well. Markdown.
Fiddler - The easy, clean, and powerful debugging proxy for checking out HTTP between here and there. It even supports sniffing SSL traffic.
NirSoft Utilities Collection - Nearly everything NirSoft does is worth looking at. My favorites are MyUninstaller, a replacement for Remove Programs, and WhoIsThisDomain.
Ditto Clipboard Manager - WindowsKey+V is amazing and close but Ditto keeps pushing clipboard management forward on Windows.
TaskbarX - It literally centers your Taskbar buttons. I love it. Open Source but also $1 in the Windows Store.
If you really want to mess with your Taskbar, try Taskbar Tweaker.
ShellEx View - Your Explorer's right click menu is cluttered, this can help you unclutter it!
OneCommander and Midnight Commander and Altap Salamander - As a long time Norton Commander user (google that!) there's a lot of great "reimaginings" of the Windows File Explorer. OneCommander and Altap Salamander does that, and Midnight Commander does it for the command line/CLI.
WinDirStat - A classic but still essential. What's taking up all that space? Spoiler - It's Call of Duty.

CodeSnap - Screenshots specifically tailored to make your code look nice.
.NET Core Test Explorer - Makes unit testing with .NET on VS Code so much nicer
Arduino for VS Code - The Arduino extension makes it easy to develop, build, deploy and debug your Arduino sketches in Visual Studio Code! So nice.
Coverage Gutters - This amazing extension highlights what code is covered with Unit Test and what's not. Ryan is looking for help, so go see if this is a great OSS project YOU can get started with!
Docker for VS Code - Container explorer and manager and deployer, directly from VS

Remote Containers - This is an AMAZING EXTENSION you have to try if you have Docker but it has a horrible non-descriptive name. But must be seen to be believed. Perhaps it's "Visual Studio Development Containers," I'm not sure. Open a folder and attach to a development container. No installs, just you debugging Rust, Go, C#, whatever whilst installing NOTHING. Amazing.
Remote SSH - Another in the VS Remote Family of Extensions, this one lets you use any remote SSH Server as your development environment.
Remote WSL - Edit and debug and build code from Windows...using Linux!

RescueTime - Are you productive? Are you spending time on what you need to be spending time on? RescueTime keeps track of what you are doing and tells you just that with fantastic reports. Very good stuff if you're trying to GTD and TCB. ;
Carnac - This wonderful little open source utility shows the hotkey's you're pressing as you press them, showing up as little overlays in the corner. I use it during coding presentations.
DOSBox - When you're off floating in 64-bit super-Windows-10-Pro land, sometimes you forget that there ARE some old programs you can't run anymore now that DOS isn't really there. Enter DOSBox, an x86 DOS Emulator! Whew, now I can play Bard's Tale from 1988 on Windows 10 in 2021! Check out Gog.com for lots of DOSBox powered classics
Oh yes, and finally Windows Sandbox - You already have this and didn't even know it! You can fire up in SECONDS a copy of your Windows 10 machine in a safe sandbox and when you close it, it's gone. Poof. Great for testing weird tools and utilities that some rando on a blog asks you to download.

NimbleText - Regular Expressions are hard and I'm not very smart. NimbleText lets me do crazy stuff with large amounts of text without it hurting so much.
Markdown Monster - While I love VSCode, Markdown Monster does one thing incredibly well. Markdown.
Fiddler - The easy, clean, and powerful debugging proxy for checking out HTTP between here and there. It even supports sniffing SSL traffic.

Visual Studio Code: A Power User’s Guide
In this guide, you’ll learn how to take advantage of Visual Studio Code to supercharge your development workflow.
This article is written for beginners who may be using Visual Studio Code for the first time. VS Code, as it’s commonly known, is considered a "lightweight" code editor. In comparison with full integrated development environment (IDE) editors which occupy gigabytes of disk space, VS Code only uses less than 200MB when installed.
Despite the "lightweight" term, VS Code offers a massive number of features which keep increasing and improving with every new update. For this guide, we'll cover the most popularly used features. Every programmer has their own tool set which they keep updating whenever new workflows are discovered. If you want to learn every tool and feature VS Code has to offer, check out their official documentation. In addition, you may want to keep track of updates for new and improved features.
Prerequisites
In order to follow along this guide, you need to be proficient in at least one programming language and framework. You also need to be conversant with versioning your project code with git. You'll also need to have an account with a remote repository platform such as GitHub. I recommend you setup SSH Keys to connect with your remote repo.
We'll use a minimal Next.js project to demonstrate VS Code features. If you’re new to this, don't worry, as the framework and the language used are not the focus for this guide. The skills taught here can be transferred to any language and framework that you’re working with.
A Bit of History
If you’re new to programming, I recommend you start with a simple text editor such as Windows NotePad. It’s the most basic text editor and doesn't offer any kind of help whatsoever. The main advantage of using it is that it forces you to memorize language syntax and do your own indentation. Once you get comfortable writing code, upgrading to a better text editor such as NotePad++ is the next logical step. It offers a bit of essential coding help with features like syntax colorization, auto indentation and basic autocomplete. It's important when learning programming not to be overwhelmed with too much information and assistance.
Once you’ve gotten used to having a better coding experience, it's time to upgrade. Not so long ago, these were the fully integrated development environments on offer:
Visual Studio IDE
NetBeans
Eclipse
IntelliJ IDEA
These platforms provide the complete development workflow, from coding to testing and deployment. They contain tons of useful features such as analyzing code and highlighting errors. They also contain a ton more features that many developers weren’t using, though they were essential for some teams. As a result, these platforms took a lot of disk space and were slow to start up. Many developers preferred using advance text editors such as emacs and vim to write their code in.
Soon, a new crop of platform independent code editors started appearing. They were lightweight and provided many features that were mostly exclusive to IDEs. I've listed them below in the order they were released:
Sublime Text: July 2013
Atom.io: June 2015
Visual Studio Code: April 2016
Mac developers had access to TextMate which was released in October 2004. The snippets system used by all the above editors originated from TextMate. Having used all of them, I felt that the editor that came after was a significant improvement over the current one. According to a developer survey done by Stack OverFlow in 2019, Visual Studio Code is the most popular code development environment with 50.7% usage. Visual Studio IDE comes second and NotePad++ comes third.
That's enough history and stats for now. Let's delve into how to use Visual Studio Code features.
Setup and Updates
Visual Studio Code package installer is less than 100MB and consumes less than 200MB when fully installed. When you visit the download page, your OS will automatically be detected and the correct download link will be highlighted.
Updating VS Code is very easy. It displays a notification prompt whenever an update has been released. For Windows users, you'll have to click on the notification to download and install the latest version. The download process occurs in the background while you’re working. When it's ready to install, a restart prompt will appear. Clicking this will install the update for you and restart VS Code.
For Ubuntu-based distributions, clicking on the update notification will simply open the website for you to download the latest installer. A much easier way is simply running sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y. This will update all installed Linux packages including VS Code. The reason this works is because VS Code added its repo to your package repo registry during the initial installation. You can find the repo information on this path: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vscode.list.
User Interface
Let's first get acquainted with the user interface:

VS Code's user interface is divided into five main areas which you can easily adjust.
Activity Bar: allows you to switch between views: explorer, search, version control, debug and extensions.
Side Bar: contains the active view.
Editor: this is where you edit files and preview markdown files. You can arrange multiple open files side-by-side.
Panel: displays different panels: integrated terminal, output panels for debug information, errors and warnings.
Status: displays information about the currently opened project and file. Also contains buttons for executing version control actions, and enabling/disabling extension features.
There's also the top Menu Bar where you can access the editor's menu system. For Linux users, the default integrated terminal will probably be the Bash shell. For Windows users, it's PowerShell. Fortunately, there’s a shell selector located inside the terminal dropdown that will allow you to choose a different shell. If installed, you can choose any of the following:
Command Prompt
PowerShell
PowerShell Core
Git Bash
WSL Bash
Working with Projects
Unlike full IDEs, VS Code doesn't provide project creation or offer project templates in the traditional way. It simply works with folders. On my Linux development machine, I'm using the following folder pattern to store and manage my projects:
/home/{username}/Projects/{company-name}/{repo-provider}/{project-name}
The Projects folder is what I refer to as to the workspace. As a freelance writer and developer, I separate projects based on which company I'm working for, and which repo I'm using. For personal projects, I store them under my own fictitious "company name". For projects that I experiment with for learning purposes, and which I don't intend to keep for long, I'll just use a name such as play or tuts as a substitute for {repo-provider}.
If you’d like to create a new project and open it in VS Code, you can use the following steps. Open a terminal and execute the following commands:
$ mkdir vscode-demo $ cd vscode-demo # Launch Visual Studio Code $ code .
You can also do this in File Explorer. When you access the mouse context menu, you should be able to open any folder in VS Code.
If you want to create a new project linked to a remote repo, it's easier creating one on the repo site — for example, GitHub or BitBucket.

Take note of all the fields that have been filled in and selected. Next, go to the terminal and execute the following:
# Navigate to workspace/company/repo folder $ cd Projects/sitepoint/github/ # Clone the project to your machine $ git clone [email protected]:{insert-username-here}/vscode-nextjs-demo.git # Open project in VS Code $ cd vscode-nextjs-demo $ code .
Once the editor is up and running, you can launch the integrated terminal using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+~ (tilde key). Use the following commands to generate package.json and install packages:
# Generate `package.json` file with default settings $ npm init -y # Install package dependencies $ npm install next react react-dom
Next, open package.json and replace the scripts section with this:
"scripts": { "dev": "next", "build": "next build", "start": "next start" }

Before we look at the next section, I’d like to mention that VS Code also supports the concept of multi-root workspaces. If you’re working with related projects — front-end, back-end, docs etc. — you can manage them all in a single workspace inside one editor. This will make it easier to keep your source code and documentation in sync.
Version Control with Git
VS Code comes built-in with Git source control manager. It provides a UI interface where you can stage, commit, create new branches and switch to existing ones. Let's commit the changes we just did in our project. On the Activity bar, open the Source Control Panel and locate the Stage All Changes plus button as shown below.

Click on it. Next, enter the commit message “Installed next.js dependencies”, then click the Commit button at the top. It has the checkmark icon. This will commit the new changes. If you look at the status located at the bottom, you'll see various status icons at the left-hand corner. The 0 ↓ means there's nothing to pull from the remote repo. The 1 ↑ means you’ve got one commit you need to push to your remote repo. Clicking on it will display a prompt on the action that will take place. Click OK to pull and push your code. This should sync up your local repo with the remote repo.
To create a new branch or switch to an existing branch, just click the branch name master on the status bar, left bottom corner. This will pop up a branch panel for you to take an action.

Support for a different type of SCM, such as SVN, can be added via installing the relevant SCM extension from the marketplace.
Creating and Running Code
On the Activity Bar, head back to the Explorer Panel and use the New Folder button to create the folder pages at the root of the project. Select this folder and use the New File button to create the file pages/index.js. Copy the following code:

With the Explorer Panel, you should see a section called NPM Scripts. Expand on this and hover over dev. A run button (play icon) will appear next to it. Click on it and this will launch a Next.js dev server inside the Integrated Terminal.

It should take a few seconds to spin up. Use Ctrl + Click on the URL http://localhost:3000 to open it in your browser. The page should open successfully displaying the “Welcome” message. In the next section, we'll look at how we can change VS Code preferences.

If you look at the status located at the bottom, you'll see various status icons at the left-hand corner. The 0 ↓ means there's nothing to pull from the remote repo. The 1 ↑ means you’ve got one commit you need to push to your remote repo. Clicking on it will display a prompt on the action that will take place. Click OK to pull and push your code. This should sync up your local repo with the remote repo.
To create a new branch or switch to an existing branch, just click the branch name master on the status bar, left bottom corner. This will pop up a branch panel for you to take an action.

Support for a different type of SCM, such as SVN, can be added via installing the relevant SCM extension from the marketplace.
Creating and Running Code
On the Activity Bar, head back to the Explorer Panel and use the New Folder button to create the folder pages at the root of the project. Select this folder and use the New File button to create the file pages/index.js. Copy the following code:
function HomePage() { return <div>Welcome to Next.js!</div>; } export default HomePage;
With the Explorer Panel, you should see a section called NPM Scripts. Expand on this and hover over dev. A run button (play icon) will appear next to it. Click on it and this will launch a Next.js dev server inside the Integrated Terminal.
It should take a few seconds to spin up. Use Ctrl + Click on the URL http://localhost:3000 to open it in your browser. The page should open successfully displaying the “Welcome” message. In the next section, we'll look at how we can change VS Code preferences.

VSCode Sync Settings and Extensions Tutorial – Synchronize Devices!

Isn’t it a nightmare to switch from your P.C. to your laptop and you don’t have any of the Visual Studio Extension snippets and settings. If you want to know how to sync your visual studio across multiple devices in this article you will learn how to do that.
So the best way that I have found to sync your visual studio code is this extension here. Settings sync:

The first thing that you need to do is to install the extension on your VSCode.
Now this extension is using GitHub, where it uploads y our settings to a gist and after that you use the gist to sync your settings to other devices.
Now to start uploading our settings, just press SHIFT + ALT + U for upload, and Visual Studio should open your GitHub page.
There you can create personal access tokens.
If you’re not logged in, make sure you do that. So you would want to click on the “Generate New Tokens” here, on top of it and should ask you to type your password again.
After you are in, you would want to give your access token description or a name  basically. I will give mine the description VSCode Sync Tutorial and after that go ahead and scroll down to where the guest check-box is and check it.
Now let’s click on generate token. This will generate a token for us that we will need to use in VSCode.
Please save this somewhere as we would need it on the other machines as well. Now open back the Visual Studio Code and it should be asking you now for your GitHub token. Go ahead and paste it there and click ENTER. Now you can upload your settings by either pressing SHIFT + ALT + U or if you forget the keyboard shortcut for any reason whatsoever, you can also trigger the plot by pressing F1 and searching for “sync”.
There you should be able to find the command “Sync Update/Upload Settings”. I also want to show you how you can update your token or find it in case you forget it. Search again for “sync” and now click on Advanced Settings. On top you will see ” Edit Extension Local Settings”. C lick on that and you’ll be opening the Sync Local Settings JSON file, and let’s first format it, so we can read it better, by pressing SHIFT + ALT + F.
Now, here you can see our GitHub token. You can change it from here or recover it in case you forget it. Now in order to simulate a new system, let’s reset the extension settings and delete all of our saved extensions and restart this VSCode. O pen the Visual Studio Code again and go ahead and install only the settings sync extension.
After you install it, l et’s download our settings by pressing SHIFT + ALT + D. I t will ask us for our GitHub token again, t hat I told you to save somewhere. So paste that there. Now it will also ask those for GistID that sync settings has created. S o in order to find that, go to your GitHub and open your Gists, and find the one that was last created by the settings sync. Now open this and in the browser address, after your name and the forward slash, t his would be the ID of your Gist.
Copy this and paste it in the extensions. Now you can freely sync your settings. One other cool thing that you can do this with this extension is that you can share your settings in a public Gist and everyone will be able to sync with them.
For example if a colleague of yours likes your settings, you can give him the gist and he will be able to download it. You can also do this if you don’t want to use tokens when syncing, but if you do that, remember to share your settings to a public guest by using this option.

A proper terminal for Visual Studio
Whack Whack Terminal is an experimental free plugin for Visual Studio 2017 that aims to bring a full terminal inside of Visual Studio. Those of you who use Visual Studio Code have long enjoyed the integrated xtermjs terminal. Justin Clareburt worked with Daniel Griffen on hacking together this solution as an experiment. There is no plans for it to be more than an experiment, I'm told BUT I always say vote with your feet. I figure a few tens of thousands of installs and someone will decide to build it in. I have long used Mads Kristensen's Quake Mode that lets me launch a command prompt from VS, but ever since the NuGet Package manager showed up in VS many years ago, I've always wanted a real FULL terminal in VS.
Today, the code is alpha quality, so expect it will actively improve, and don't be mean in the GitHub Issues. They've versioned it at 0.2, and is aiming for parity with the features in the terminal in VSCode for version 1.0.
Still, go install WhackWhack in VS2017 NOW! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
I'm sure they will update it with lots of great features like changing the fonts and colors, but if you want to hack away (as of the date of this blog post) you can mess around in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\Common7\IDE\Extensions\sjogt3hc.qcl\daytona with ZERO WARRENTY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. I went into there and edited the default.css file by removing all the comments and changing the background-color to black, the text to white, and adding a font-family choosing Consolas. If you do that, you'll likely need to uninstall/reinstall at some point when REAL customizations come. Again, alpha. But awesome.
"Whack" is a shorthand word for a slash (forward or otherwise) and the default hotkey is Ctrl+\, Ctrl+\. That's twice. so Ctrl WHACK WHACK. When you use the hotkey it will open the folder in the same folder as the currently selected project in the Solution Explorer.
If you want to change the hotkey to something else (like a more sensible Ctrl+~) you can do it in Tools | Options | Keyboard like this.
Then assign a new one by clicking in Press Shortcut Keys and typing "Ctrl+`" (which to me, is Ctrl ~ on my keyboard, without the shift)
By default the shell is PowerShell, but there's also places to support bash/Ubuntu, etc. For now, if you want bash, you can type C:\windows\sysnative\bash.exe in the terminal.
And just to freak you out, here's top running inside Visual Studio.
