The Read-Cap: Week of January 6, 2024
Summary of all the books I read this week and the ones I'm planning on reading next
This is my first read-cap, so bear with me while I figure out the best structure for posting these after several years of doing just reading summaries at the end of the month. These will be posted every Saturday and will be about the books I’ve read in the past week. Sometimes there will be reviews, and sometimes there will not. It really depends on what I’ve read and how much I’ve read. This is…

have Petey and princess ever talked about her not wanting kids? Like how did that conversation go?
warnings: talks heavily about the possibility of never having kids due to a medical condition and also talks about said medical condition. please proceed with care.
princess had never wanted a serious relationship, but things were different with elias. when they get back to vancouver from sweden and she’s spending basically all of her nights at his apartment, she knows that they’re serious before they even put a label on it. she knows that she has to tell him then.
“we need to talk,” she breaks the ice over dinner. she has cooked that night, just a basic pasta and sauce but elias still said that it was the best he had ever tasted, “about something serious.”
“okay,” elias sets his fork down and crosses his hands together in front of him.
“i care about you, elias. i can see a future with you and what i’m about to tell you, i can’t move forward with us without you knowing it. there’s only two people in the world that know,” she swallows the lump in her throat, “me and the doctor who diagnosed me.”
“princess,” he trails off, a look of concern taking over his face as he reaches across the table to grab onto her hand and she’s so grateful for that in the moment, “you don’t have to tell me-”
“i have endometriosis,” she says the words that she had never uttered out loud to another soul before. her eyes search his face for a reaction which she doesn’t get. “it’s a medical condition where basically the tissue that’s supposed to grow inside of my uterus, isn’t growing there and because of that, i may never be able to have children.”
realization flashes across his face and she nods.
“i’ve known for a few years now and i’ve made peace with the fact that children just may not be in my future. i- i love them, but just not for me,” she squeezes his hand, “if that’s a deal breaker for you i understand-”
“no, it’s just- i don’t know anything about the condition-”
“endometriosis.”
“endometriosis,” he looks at her for confirmation and she nods her head, “it’s not a dealbreaker for me, princess. not at all. thank you for telling me.”
“you understand that i may never be able to give you children,” she needs that clarification and he cracks a small smile. “elias-”
“but i’ll still have you?” he asks and she nods, “you’re going to have to teach me about it because i don’t know anything, seriously, but i don’t look at you any differently than i did five minutes ago when i thought you were going to tell me that you just ordered this from a restaurant and threw away the boxes.”
she can’t help but laugh at his attempt to lighten the mood, “is it that bad?”
“you burned microwave mac and cheese the other day, princess. and i saw the receipt sticking out of the trashcan.”

Y/N POV
It was Saturday so you were able to sleep in a full half hour before Morgan got up.  You had a lazy morning making pancakes together.
“Remember Morgan that Lily is coming tonight to watch you while I go out for dinner with Carol.”
“I like Lily!”  She smiled at you, while dripping syrup off her fork.
“I am so glad baby.”  And you truly were.
“Are you going to be gone long?”  She looked at you a little worried.
“No honey, just for a little bit,  you will have dinner, and play time and I will be back before you go to sleep.”  You told her.
“Good, I don’t want Lily to put me to bed.”
“She will get you in your jammies but I will be back to tuck you in, I promise.”  You told her.  This was satisfactory and she resumed eating her sticky pancakes.
The afternoon went by fast and you pulled out your nice black dress you hadn’t worn since moving to Vancouver.  It felt weird to put it on, living mostly in lounge clothes with Morgan, but it also felt nice to have a reason to look good.  A knock came before you knew it and you went to open the door.
“Lily hi come in, Morgan has been waiting all day to see you”  You greeted the teen.  She walked in and Morgan immediately went to talk to her.  When she was comfortable she was a talker just like her momma.  You couldn’t help but smile at memories of your sister.
“I came along too”  Carol walked to the apartment door.
“Oh hi Carol! I didn’t know you were coming too.”  You told her.
“Well I figured we could just carpool, since Lily had to come anyway and you are along the way.”
“I am at least ten minutes out of the way”  You told her.
“Okay you got me”  She put her hands up.  “I wanted an excuse to talk more with you.”
“I am always happy to talk to you, I have been enjoying some adult time”  She laughed and told you she knew how you felt, and you grabbed your bag, kissed Morgan goodbye and left with Carol.
“She took to Lily quickly,”  Carol mused once in the car.
“Yes, I am surprised only because this past year she has gotten really shy.”
“It isn’t surprising considering everything.  I noticed she called you mommy though.”  You sighed.  She had said it during your goodbyes.
“Yes, she calls me mommy sometimes.  She doesn’t quite understand that I am not her mother.  She remembers the idea of her parents, but doesn’t remember them so I become mommy sometimes.  But honestly, I am her mommy now so I don’t know how much to correct her.  And God knows how it will affect her when she gets older so I just let it go for now.”
“I can’t imagine.  But it makes sense and you are doing amazing.  I see how she interacts with you and she loves you very much.”  You looked at her and smiled.
“Thank you Carol, that means a lot.”
Tumblr media
You had gotten to the restaurant and it was as fancy as Carol said it was.  A nice steak dinner was calling your name and your mouth watered.  But you were nervous about how to pay for it, you knew that you were on a budget but sometimes you needed to splurge because this wasn’t going to become a common occurrence.  The boys were there already and you went to the table.
“Welcome ladies”  Jared said, getting up to hug you both.  You sat in between Jensen and Jared at the table.
“You look nice”  Jensen said to you, after he helped you in your chair.
“Thank you Jensen, you clean up nice yourself.”  He smirked.  The man must know what he did to you and to all women.  He was a literal angel. The man was so handsome.  Well, maybe he was the devil.
Conversation flowed, and Jensen was nothing but a gentleman so you tried to ignore what happened the other day.  Carol and Jared had left to use the bathroom while waiting for dessert and Jensen leaned over.
“I wanted to apologize for yesterday.  I was a complete dick and you didn’t deserve that. I just wasn’t thinking how I came across.”  He said sincerely.
“It’s okay, I know how it looks”  You smiled sadly at him.  You had come from a small town so a single mother was definitely something to talk about.  And in Vancouver, though it was a bigger city, there were still pockets of people who held judgment.  And they didn’t know that you hadn’t done anything “wrong”.  You were just trying to take care of a precious little girl and it happened to be by yourself.
“It doesn’t matter, I shouldn’t have been judging, I mean I wasn’t really, I was just surprised. And you deserve better than an absent father.”  Now you were confused.
“Wait, what do you mean an absent father?”
“Morgan’s father, he isn’t in the picture anymore is he?  I figured not since you don’t mention him and you said you were doing this all by yourself.”
“So you think…what exactly?”  You wanted to know just how much judgment there was here.
“I don’t know, I guess just that her dad isn’t around..”  He was squirming, not sure what the right thing to say was.
“No he isn’t around anymore.”  You gauged his reaction.  He drank from his glass of wine.
“That’s all I meant.”
“Look, her dad died okay?”  You tried to stay calm.  After all, it wasn’t his fault if he didn’t have the facts.
“Oh so you were married?”   He sounded too judgmental for you, you hadn’t had enough wine for that.
“Wow seriously?  You apologize for being judgmental but sound so surprised to think I was married and didn’t have her out of wedlock like a whore?”  You didn’t raise your voice, this wasn’t the place.
“No, I don’t think you’re a whore”  He looked around and lowered his voice as he said it.  “I don’t know anything about you and I am trying here. I am not trying to judge you and I am working on little details so I am sorry for offending you but how can I know what I don’t know?  You don’t owe me any explanation, I am just trying to figure you out.”  He told you sincerely.  You calmed down a little, you had felt bad for reacting badly.  You didn’t have to be a jerk just because you thought he was one, and turns out he wasn’t trying to be a jerk he just was an idiot.
“Look, Jensen, you have to understand something.”  He leaned in closer and you could tell you had his full attention. “Whenever anyone finds out I have a child, most guys run for the hills, and most women judge me.  No one bothers to find out the real story, everyone is so happy to feel like they are better than someone else.  They don’t care that I didn’t have a child out of wedlock in fact I-”  Jared and Carol came back and you were interrupted.
“What did I miss?”  Jared asked.  You had pulled back from Jensen and cleared your throat.
“Oh just that we were impatiently waiting for your return”  You teased.  Dessert went by awkwardly and you tried your best to have a good attitude, Carol didn’t deserve a ruined night.  Jensen looked like a kicked puppy the whole time and you knew you would have to clear up this misunderstanding that seemed to get worse.  After all, he was trying to get to know you and he was working on partial information.  It wasn’t like you flaunted your personal life so you couldn’t blame him.  You were just very protective of Morgan, and though that is true, it was a shield to protect yourself too.

Canada gold in mens breaking
Canada’s Philip Kim danced his way to history. Kim won the first-ever gold medal in men’s Olympic breaking by defeating France’s Danis Civil 23-4 in the final battle on Saturday. Victor Montalvo of the United States won the bronze medal. Kim advanced gold-medal battle of the competition after defeating Japan’s Shigeyuki Nakarai 17-10 in the semifinals on Saturday. Nakarai and Kim were the top two seeds in the contest. Kim advanced to the semifinals after defeating Lee-Lou Demierre of the Netherlands 19-8 in the quarterfinals. Kim won all three of his battles in the round robin of the B-Boys breaking competition to advance to the quarterfinals in an event making its Olympic debut. The 27-year-old breaker, who competes as “Phil Wizard,” beat Civil 13-5 in his opening battle. He then won 10-8 in a tight contest over Ukraine’s Oleg Kuznietsov and finished with a dominant 17-1 win over Australia’s 16-year-old breaker Jeffrey Dan Arpie Dunne. Each of the 16 competitors competed in two battles against the three other breakers in their group in the round robin. The breakers receive marks for technique, vocabulary (the variety of moves incorporated), execution, musicality and originality. Instead of scoring each criteria, the nine judges use a digital slider that they slide towards the breaker who they believe is winning the head-to-head matchup. There are a total of 18 points (one point per judge per battle) up for grabs over each head-to-head matchup. In the quarterfinals, semifinals and final there are a total of three rounds with 27 points up for grabs. Kim, a Vancouver native, won the first gold medal in B-Boys breaking competition at the Pan American Games in 2023. He also won Canada’s first world title in breaking at the 2022 World DanceSport Federation championships. Kim finished second at the championships in 2021 and 2023. Breaking is making its Olympic debut in Paris. It will not be a sport at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Ami Yuasa of Japan won the first ever breaking Olympic gold medal in the B-Girls competition on Friday. Source link via The Novum Times

"The initial posture of the provincial government in the Vancouver Island coal miners’ strike [of 1912-1914] was non-interventionist. This was characteristic of the government in previous mine strikes (1871-1903), as little aid was given in the working out of settlements. Ostensibly, the sole concern of the government was to maintain observance of the law (Wargo 1962, 16). Thus, Premier McBride, who was also the Minister of Mines, continuously evaded requests from the miners to intervene in the dispute. The professed neutrality of the premier, however, was incongruent with the fact that he allowed a ludicrously simple procedure for calling out the militia to go unchallenged. Under the federal law applying to this procedure, any three justices of the peace could sign an order for the militia to be activated in connection with any disturbance or anticipated disturbance. Moreover, the premier opposed a resolution put by the two Socialist members of the provincial parliament which called for the appointment of a select committee to inquire into the cause of the company lockout. The resolution was defeated by a vote of 35 to 2. In addition, Premier McBride corresponded with colliery owners and managers, keeping them informed about government discussions of strike activities (Report to W.L. Carelson, General Manager of Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd.: Provincial Archives, GR441). Finally, the premier showed little hesitation in approving the call-out of the militia, and no concern for de-activating them while they held the strikers effectively in check.
The federal government appeared to have a more considered interest in stopping the strike, but under the 1907 IDIA [Industrial Disputes Investigations] Act, the Minister of Labour did not have the power to initiate conciliation proceedings unless it was requested by either of the parties to the dispute. It is curious, however, that the federal government made no attempt to use its influence to persuade the McKenzie-Mann corporation (Canadian Collieries Ltd.) to settle, though at the time of the strike it had granted the company $17,000,000 for the purpose of constructing the Canadian Northern Railway (Silverman 1956, 181). On the other hand, the federal government may have endorsed the use of the militia precisely because it did not want to see the McKenzie-Mann operations preoccupied with damaging work stoppages (Norris 1980, 64). Despite grounds for partisanship, the report of the one-man Royal Commission appointed by the Minister of Labour handed down recommendations seemingly favourable to the miners’ aspirations, and led to amendment to the IDIA Act, one of which gave the Minister of Labour the power to initiate arbitration proceedings.
Although the role of the federal government was somewhat ambiguous with respect to the prolongation and sudden ending of the dispute, it is clear that the provincial government eschewed its responsibilities when the Department of Mines failed to investigate the miners’ original complaint. This encouraged the companies to believe that they could break the strike, which, in turn, brought on union violence. In all of this, the provincial government underused its own state apparatus for responding to industrial conflict — until the strike got out of control. When capital was threatened, the state mobilized a massive retaliatory response.
The coercive realm of the state is concentrated in its criminal justice system. It is within this ideological sphere that the partisan nature of the state becomes transparent. The instrumentality of the state was brazenly revealed in the Nanaimo Coal Strike once the provincial government crossed the threshold of intervention.
The actions of the special police was discriminatory throughout. Miners were often assaulted by armed strike-breakers, but the police refused to extend the protection of the law to the striking miners. The ties between the special police and the companies were evident in the officiousness of the police on behalf of the company. They served as employment agents in the recruitment of company strike-breakers, and as bank messengers running deposits between the bank and the company office (Kavanagh 1916, 6, 15). In general their conduct was such as to confirm the miners’ opinion that the large number of special police dispatched by the Attorney-General was a declaration of war on the strikers.
The discretionary biases of the Courts were no less flagrant and grating on the miners’ sensibilities. One magistrate was replaced when the agent for the Attorney-General decided that the cases of strikers charged in connections with incidents between strikers and strike-breakers were being handled “summarily and unsatisfactorily” by the magistrate (Wargo 1962, 91). In connection with the August riots, none of the 213 arrested strikers were granted bail while the preliminary hearings were in progress. One observer commented that
at the preliminary hearing in Nanimo, the visitors to the court house were treated to the edifying spectacle of Magistrate Simpson retiring to the judges room in company with Prosecuting Attorney Shoebotham, any time he happened to be in doubt as to what course to pursue (Kavanagh 1914,13).
Reflecting on the prosecuting attorney's apparent motivation to break the strike, another miner commented, “. . . it is perfectly clear that there are two brands of justice in this province” (Wejr and Smith 1978, 20). Even a Pinkerton hireling was moved to describe the courtroom machinations as a“ grotesque travesty” in one of his daily reports (Reports of Operator #29, 21 and 22 December 1913; Provincial Archives of British Columbia, GR68, Vol. 2). In the Nanaimo trials, Judge Howay sentenced two union leaders to two years in the penitentiary although they had not themselves taken part in any violence.
The use of the militia to suppress the strike also gave basis to suspicions of collusion between the government and the companies. On four of six previous occasions when the militia was called out to aid the civil power, it was employed in strikebreaking. In 1890, when the militia was stationed for five months in Wellington, all expense incurred by the militia, including the room and board, and transportation and pay of the men, was paid by Dunsmuir and Sons (Silverman 1956, 160). In 1900, one of the three justices who signed the requisition for the militia to come into the fishermen’s strike at Steveston was himself a cannery owner. It was also the case that “. . . no great number of the labouring class were in the militia, its composition being largely of middle-class persons” (Silverman 1956, 180). Furthermore, it was uncertain why the Royal Northwest Mounted Police were not called upon instead of the militia, though it is probable that the militia were preferred since the federal government would not allow the RNMP to come under the direct control of provincial authorities. In sum, the actions of the state criminal justice system in the confrontative stages of the Island coal strike were anything but reassuring to the miners. At every level, the provincial authorities displayed flagrant partiality towards the owners and mine operators. In retrospect, the inaction of the state in the earlier stages of the dispute gave the appearance of a delaying strategy. When the strike widened and industrial productivity was seriously threatened, collusive alliances between government and capital became conspicuous and the class character of the state was nakedly revealed in the coercive and biased application of the criminal justice system."

Common Electrical Problems and How to Fix Them
Living in Vancouver, BC, our clients often face a variety of electrical issues due to the city’s unique climate and infrastructure. Here are some common electrical problems and tips on how to fix them.
Flickering Lights
Flickering lights can be both annoying and indicative of a larger issue. Common causes include loose bulbs, faulty light switches, or problems with the electrical panel. To fix this, first check if the bulb is securely screwed in. If the problem persists, try replacing the bulb. If neither solution works, it might be a wiring issue requiring professional attention.
Circuit Breaker Trips
Frequent circuit breaker trips can disrupt your daily routine and signal an overloaded circuit or a short circuit. Start by unplugging some devices to reduce the load on the circuit. If the breaker continues to trip, inspect for damaged wires or faulty appliances. Persistent issues might indicate the need for an electrical panel upgrade, which should be handled by a licensed electrician.
Dead Outlets
Dead outlets are not only inconvenient but can also pose a safety hazard. Often, they are caused by a tripped GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet, a tripped circuit breaker, or loose wiring. First, reset any GFCI outlets by pressing the “reset” button. If this doesn’t work, check the breaker box for any tripped circuits and reset them. If the outlet is still dead, it’s best to call an electrician to inspect the wiring.
High Electric Bills
Unexpectedly high electric bills can be a sign of an underlying electrical issue. Common culprits include outdated appliances, inefficient lighting, or a faulty electrical system. Consider upgrading to energy-efficient LED bulbs and Energy Star-rated appliances. Additionally, scheduling an energy audit with a professional can help identify and rectify inefficiencies in your electrical system.
When to Call a Professional
While some minor electrical issues can be resolved with DIY fixes, others require the expertise of a licensed electrician. If you’re ever in doubt or if the problem persists despite your efforts, it’s crucial to contact a professional to ensure your safety and prevent further damage.
By addressing these common electrical problems promptly, you can maintain a safe and efficient electrical system in your Vancouver home. Call Wicks Electric today!

The Essential Guide to Appliance Repair: Tips and Tricks
Tumblr media
Appliances are the backbone of modern living. From washing machines to refrigerators, they make our lives easier and more efficient. But what happens when they break down? Appliance repair becomes essential. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the world of appliance repair in Vancouver:
Identify the Problem: When your appliance malfunctions, the first step is to identify the issue. Is it making strange noises? Not turning on? Not heating ? Understanding the problem will help you troubleshoot more effectively.
Check for Basic Solutions: Sometimes, the problem might be a simple fix. Check if the appliance is plugged in, if the circuit breaker has tripped, or if there are any visible signs of damage.
Refer to the Manual: Most appliances come with a user manual that includes troubleshooting tips and maintenance guidelines. Refer to the manual for specific instructions on how to address common issues.
Safety First: Before attempting any appliance repairs, always ensure your safety. Unplug the appliance and, if necessary, turn off the power supply to avoid electric shocks.
Gather the Right Tools: Having the right tools can make all the difference in appliance repair. Basic tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers are essential for most repairs.
DIY vs. Professional Repair: While some appliance repairs can be done DIY, others may require professional assistance. Consider your skills and the complexity of the problem before deciding whether to tackle the repair yourself or call a professional.
Common Appliance Problems and Solutions:
Refrigerator not Cooling: Check if the condenser coils are dirty and clean them if necessary. Ensure that the temperature settings are correct and that the door seals are intact.
Washing Machine Leaking: Inspect the hoses for any cracks or leaks and replace them if needed. Check the door seal for any damage and clean it to prevent mold growth.
Oven not Heating: Test the heating element for continuity using a multimeter. If it's defective, replace it with a new one. Also, check the temperature sensor and thermostat for any faults.
Dishwasher not Draining: Clean the filter and check for any clogs in the drain hose or pump. Run a vinegar rinse cycle to remove any built-up residue.
Preventive Maintenance: Regular maintenance can help prevent appliance breakdowns. Clean or replace filters, coils, and seals as recommended by the manufacturer.
Know When to Replace: Sometimes, repairing an old appliance may not be cost-effective in the long run. If the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the appliance or if it's nearing the end of its lifespan, consider investing in a new one.

Breaking Ice, and Helicopter Drops: Winning Photos of Working Scientists
Nature’s Annual Photography Competition Attracted Stunning Images From Around the World, Including Two Very Different Shots Featuring the Polarstern Research Vessel.
— By Jack Leeming | 23 April 2024

Glaciologist Richard Jones captured the moment a crew member on RV Polarstern prepared to rescue a measuring device trapped in ice.
Nature’s Annual Photography Competition Showcases Stunning Images From Around the World. By Jack Leeming. This image, taken on top of the ice breaker research vessel Polarstern, shows the delicate process of retriev ing an instrument called a CTD (short for conductivity, temperature, depth) that had become trapped under sea ice off the coast of northeastern Greenland. CTDs, which are anchored to the sea floor, measure how ocean properties such as salin ity and temperature vary with depth. At some point, the sea ice had closed over the top of this one, forcing the Polarstern to skirt carefully around the equipment, breaking the ice to rescue it from the freezing ocean.
“You’re crashing into ice and breaking through it. So it wasn’t particularly calm sail ing for the majority of the trip,” remembers Richard Jones, who took the image in Septem ber 2017 and is the winner of Nature’s 2024 Working Scientist photography competition. His research aims to improve estimates of the rate at which ice is being lost from the world’s glacial ice sheets. Jones, a glaciologist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, highlights the photo graphic contrast between icebreaker and ice that he’d become used to in his five weeks aboard the Polarstern. “All you really see is
blue and white. And sometimes that might feel pretty monotonous, but the colours from the CTD instrument and the orange of the crane contrast the scene and also complement it quite nicely.” We received more than 200 entries this year from researchers working around the world. The winner and the four runnersup (highlighted on the following pages) were selected by a jury of Nature staff, including three of the journal’s picture editors. All will receive a prize of £500 (US$620), in the form of Amazon vouchers or a donation to charity, as well as a year’s subscription to Nature.

Work/Careers! Library Ofleaves! PhD student Kim Castro took this photo of her colleague, postdoctoral researcher Luiz Leonardo Saldanha, in a herbarium that they both work in regularly. It's shared between the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. Both Castro and Saldanha investigate the medicinal plants of the Amazon at the Department of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany at the University of Zurich, although the two have very different approaches: whereas Saldanha investigates their chemical diversity, Castro looks at how the plants are perceived by Indigenous communities in the Amazon, specializing in how the plants smell. A herbarium, Saldanha says, is "like a library - but instead of books, there are plants here". Saldanha posed with this particular sample (Palicourea corymbifera, collected in 1977) because it comes from his home country, Brazil, but is used by the Indigenous Desano people in Colombia as a medicinal herb. "So it creates a commonality between South American countries," he says.

“Only 130 of These Birds 🦅 Remain On Earth. A Single Mosquito Bite Can Kill a Kiwikiu." Reaching the beak Conservation biologist Ryan Wagner snapped this photo of field biologist Sonia Vallocchia feeding a recently caught kiwikiu (Pseudonestor xanthophrys), in January this year. It was taken on Haleakala volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Wagner, a PhD student at Washington State University Vancouver, was on an expedition to the island as a science communicator, hoping to raise awareness of the plight of the endangered birds. "Only 130 of these birds remain on Earth," explains Wagner. "Their numbers have crashed due to avian malaria, which is spread by invasive mosquitoes. As climate change warms the island, mosquitoes have advanced upslope into the high-elevation refuges where native birds survive. A single mosquito bite can kill a kiwikiu." He hopes that ornithologists such as Vallocchia, who works for the Maui Forest Birds Recovery Project in Makawao, will help to save these birds by bringing some of them (by helicopter) to the Maui Bird Conservation Center, also in Makawao. There, they will be treated for malaria and join a captive breeding programme, he says.

Mountain Drop-off! In this dramatic image, taken from below the still-spinning, deafening blades of a military helicopter, scientists shelter with their equipment after being dropped off at the top of a remote mountain in northern Amazonia. They are taking part in a biodiversity-research expedition to Serra Imeri, an isolated mountain range that rises through the forest canopy near the border of Brazil and Venezuela, in November 2022. "A total of 14 scientists and dozens of military support personnel took part in the expedition, which lasted for 11 days and resulted in the discovery of several new species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and plants," says photographer Herton Escobar, a science journalist who works with the scientists pictured, at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.

Go With The Floe! Emiliano Cimoli, a remote-sensing scientist at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania, Australia, took the second photograph featuring the research vessel Polarstern in this year's collection of winning images. Here, Carolin Mehlmann and Thomas Richter, mathematicians at the University of Magdeburg, Germany, are measuring the depth of snow across a giant ice floe drifting in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. The image was taken during a two-month voyage organized by the Alfred Wegener Institute, based in Bremerhaven, Germany, in August 2023. The goal of the expedition was to evaluate interactions between the ice physics, biology, hydrography, biogeochemistry and biodiversity of the Arctic ecosystem, from the sea ice to the sea floor.

It had been about a week since you started, and you had fallen into a good routine. Drop Morgan off, get to work, set up your station with what you would need for the day depending on scenes, and shoot the breeze with Carol.  You had quickly taken to her and she was your closest friend in Vancouver.
“And you are from Minnesota originally?”  She asked you one day.
“Yes, my sister met her husband at a conference here where he is from and the rest is history.  His mother was a big part of their lives until she passed.  Mine passed years ago, before Morgan was born so it’s just her and I.”
“Well you seem to be adjusting quickly.”
“I had visited before so I kinda knew the area but it made more sense to come here than uproot her.  She lost so much already she didn’t need to lose her home and friends too.  I figured I could make it work for myself anywhere.”  You shrugged.
“And you are doing amazing.  She really is the cutest little thing”  Carol had met her a few nights ago; she wouldn’t take no for an answer and came with you to pick her up from school and you went to get pizza together.  She even marched into the school to inform them that in case of emergency she would be picking Morgan up some days so they were aware.  You protested saying you couldn’t make her do that but she wouldn’t hear it.
“I really appreciate that.  I am just making it up most days. I don't know how to be a mom.  I hardly grew up around kids, I was the youngest in a small family and never really babysat before.  I am just trying to not drown.”
“Whether you are used to kids or not, once you become a parent it is completely different.  We are all just trying to not drown.”  She encouraged you.
“My youngest is 16 and I am still trying to figure it out.”  She chuckled.
“Good morning ladies”  You were interrupted by Jared.
“Good morning”  You returned.
“I hear Jensen will be on set today,”  Carol said.
“Yeah!  Talked to him last night and he should be here any second actually.”  Jared sounded like a kid at Christmas. He was so excited.
“Oh good I miss that boy,”  She said.  And with that the door swung open to reveal a handsome man.  You knew he was handsome from tv but wow in person?  Angelic.
“OOHH  Carol squealed, going to him.  He embraced her in a big hug.
“Bout time you got here.”  She scolded.
“Sorry, I just thought I should spend a few more days with my parents.  I won’t see them until Thanksgiving.”  He told her.
“I hate to share you, but I guess.”  She sighed dramatically.  He laughed, kissed her cheek and gave Jared a hug.  The exchanged a few words and then,
“This is Y/N, the new Carol”  Jared said.
“New Carol? You make it sound like I am leaving.”  She said.
“No way are you leaving.”  The boys affirmed.
“Hi”  You said, awkwardly.  You didn’t know how you fit into the dynamic.
“Hi Y/N, I am Jensen, nice to meet you”  He shook your hand and kept eye contact.  Those green eyes were very distracting.
“You too”  You smiled.  It was all you could do to look away.  The man was very fine.
“Hope you are enjoying being on set so far”  He continued.
“Oh very much, everyone is so kind.”  You said honestly.
“This set isn’t like others, it is a family.”  He agreed.
“Yeah yeah, lots of love, but can you make his mug look any good?  We have to shoot soon.”  Jared joked.
“You’re one to talk.  I gave you an extra week to look good and you don’t look any better.  And that’s not the girls’ fault”  Jensen quipped, winking at you.  Your stomach flipped.  You had always been a Dean girl but wow, you didn’t expect that.
“Okay boys, we have a heck of a job to do, so sit down” Carol joked.  Jensen sat in your chair and Jared walked over to Carol’s.
“Think you can make me look good?”  Jensen asked you in the mirror.
“I will do my best.”  You tried to sound confident, but your shaking hands gave you away.
Tumblr media
After about 20 minutes, you were done.
“Well, how did I do?”  You asked him.
“I never looked better.”  He said, pretending to really check himself out.  You laughed.
“That’s why they pay me the big bucks.”  You teased.
“Keep it up and they will have no choice but to extend your contract.”  Jensen said.
“You know about my contract?”  You were surprised.
“Well, I know the hiring committee so all they said was that it was a trial basis.  Not sure why though, you seem like you are very capable.”  He told you.
“Oh, well..it’s um..”  You weren’t sure how much to say.
“Maybe she doesn’t want to be committed to us?  We will have to convince all parties it’s for the best”  Carol saved you.  You gave her a grateful look.
“Guess we should start with lunch then.  Carol, we need to discuss when we are going to dinner.”  Jensen said.
“Sounds good, we can do that over lunch.”  She confirmed and the boys said their goodbyes and left.
“Dinner?”  You asked her.
“Oh they are so sweet they started taking me out to dinner at the beginning of each season to some fancy place after we got close in season 1.  It was new for all of us and we went through ups and downs with makeup haha.”  She reminisced.
“That sounds so nice”  You smiled.
“Oh it is, they are just the best.  It’s amazing how Jensen is still single”  She mused.
“Oh?”  You tried to sound casual.  You couldn’t help but be interested in what she had to say about the man you had a crush on since the pilot.  The character, that is.  You didn’t like Jensen.  Nope.  Just met him.
“Yeah, he is such a catch, it’s amazing he hasn’t found someone yet.  But the man is too nice for his own sake, so it is good he hasn’t settled but it’s not for lack of women.”
“I’m sure”  You agreed.
“What about you?  Why aren’t you dating yet?”
“I don’t have time”  You laughed.  “I am so busy with Morgan and now this job.  Besides, you find a guy and the first thing they do when you say you have a kid is run for the hills.  I am starting to believe it will be just me and Morgan forever.”  You said, only a little bitterness in your voice.
“Nonsense.  You are a catch and any man worth his salt can see that.  Not all men are turned off by kids.  Especially if they meet that angel”
“Thanks Carol, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.”
“Well, the day is young, and we haven’t had lunch yet.”  She gave you a knowing look, but you weren’t in on the joke.

“CRESS Recaptured IN B. C.,” Vancouver Sun. December 5, 1932. Page 1. ---- ASLEEP IN BARN AT BRIDESVILLE --- MANHUNT ENDS --- GREENWOOD, Dec. 5. - Robert Cress, 38, hijacker and convicted jail breaker who escaped from custody of two Provincial Police constables. Nov. 30, while being taken on a Kettle Valley train to Oakalla to serve one year for breaking from Nelson jail, was recaptured near Bridesville today.
Cress was asleep in a ranch building near Bridesville, eight miles west of Rock Creek and 38 miles westward from here, when he was apprehended by Provincial Constable Clark of Greenwood, who was one of the escort from whom the fugitive escaped.
Clark was accompanied by a game warden.
Arrest of Cress ended one of the most intensive manhunts in the history of the Kettle Valley district.
Provincial Police were handicapped by 24 men having been moved to Princeton last week owing to trouble brewing there among striking miners.
All available Provincial officers and settlers acting as special constables have been scouring the wild country between Midway and Bridesville since Wednesday night when Cre-ss made his desperate leap, feet first, through the train window at Carml.
FLED ON SPEEDER He eluded pursuit by escaping on a railway speeder which was found upside down at Rock Creek Thursday.
Cress has a long criminal record having been convicted in Vancouver, 1927, for the Cordova Street Liquor Store robbery there, also several robberies in Point Grey. He was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary.
He had been sentenced previously for robbery with violence and hijacking at Grand Forks in 1924 and served five years for that offense.
HIS THIRD "BREAK" He was awaiting trial, charged with robbery of the liquor store at Greenwood, July 2 last, when he sawed his way out of a Nelson jail cell and was at large 12 hours before being recaptured, November 24.
He was sentenced to one year for this jail break but was acquitted on the liquor store roooery charge.
As he had attempted to break from custody of Vancouver police officers before. Cress was manacled with leg irons while in the train and he was wearing these when he escaped for the third time.
