Carry On Countdown Day 31: Where are they now?

Dev and Niall have been banned from Target due to their inappropriate use of shopping trolleys. They are channeling their energy into sending each other smutty texts instead.

Fiona turned out to be an exceptional great aunt… until she gifted Lucy her first vape. Baz supervises all visits now. 

The merwolf fell madly in love with bunBaz. It was a tearful separation when this bun took off to his permanent home in @bookish-bogwitch's SnowBaz shrine. 

Winged Baz is on his way to the UK. It’s a long flight. He is extremely displeased about it, so @hushed-chorus better have some tea waiting for him when he arrives. 

And Making Tarts Simon is being held hostage inside a cake until @thewholelemon comes to rescue him. He can’t wait to bake many tiny treats for her and her family when she finally takes him home. 

As for the doll maker herself? She has a lot of feelings about COC being over --- primarily relief that her fingers can finally heal. She is also extremely proud of herself for completing this ridiculous undertaking.

In all seriousness, this project was truly ridiculous! I spent two whole weeks on the map alone. I rarely keep what I make, so each doll was made specifically for this challenge and took 8-12 hours to hand sew. In the end, I think it was worth it. COC brings me so much joy every year. I hope I could bring you a bit of joy this season too.

to safe a life

when you become a life guard, a rescue swimmer, you get taught to keep a drowning person away from you when they are in panic. because the panicking person can drown you. then you're both dead.

when you become a soldier you get a first aid kit. when you find a wounded soldier, you use their first aid kit to tend to their wounds. because once you get injured, someone will need your first aid kit to tend your wounds.

when you have suffered trauma of any kind, you can become an abuser. you can inherit behaviors which harm others. so helping yourself means to also help others, because when your trauma gets treated, you spare others from possible abusive behavior.

when you want to safe a life, you needn't forget that you, the helper, also needs to stay alive. else, who will be left to help?

this isn't egoistic in a toxic way, this is self-protection. it's natural and okay.

the following is a post what i comes to my mind if some random blog appears or tags me and begs for money. it's just my personal thoughts and experiences, this isn't an essay.

TL:DR: no.

i'm broke. basically.

i can barely make a living right now. and i'm going through a divorce with a someone greedy, not knowing what costs i have to expect. a damocles sword of uncertainty hangs over my head and i'm absolutely powerless, forced to just wait it out and react.

my ex looking down on anyone who dares to think of buying something for themselves. while at the same time, he was totally okay with me enslaving myself in a terrible job just so he doesn't have to watch his spending. i have stopped spending money on anything halfway luxurious. new clothes? not until they fall apart. dying my hair? decorative, not essential. accessories? lol, what i cut my hair myself just to safe on costs. buying something for our apartment? only essentials, no decorations. food? only if it helps keeping healthy, anything else a rare extra to not lose every enjoyment in life. i quit smoking and vaping essentially for him. i'm glad i did, but it started to safe on money and support him. i bought him a new PC before me, even though i need it for work and he just games. i game, too, but i only buy rarely and only on sale. can't even support the indie devs i'd like to support. everything i did, i have done for him. everything i have bought in the last years was his as much as it was mine. and by years i mean this started even before we got married. he now will receive a big heritage. i am really and honestly sorry for his loss. i know how it feels to lose a loved one. my father, my grandmother, two friends, recently someone who was very, very dear to me and i have lost former colleagues, too. it was something to be expected to happen, sooner or later, as it was his grandfather who already was very old and sick. that of course doesn't erase the pain. but the fact that this loss does come with a substantial financial gain doesn't get erased either. yet, all he does is being non cooperative and holding his hand open for money. he states how much he would be helping his family now. i've seen him "helping his family". he barely even calls them. they live half an hour away, by train or by car. i offered to drive him or even get them and we could meet up and have nice family time. he didn't want to. and his mother didn't want either. this is the kind of "family person" he calls himself.

this is my situation.

after all this is over, the freedom i look forward to in my future will mean to not even have running water. at least not endlessly. i won't just be able to turn a knob and be warm. and electricity will be capped or i'll need sufficient solar power in addition. this is still more freedom than i ever had.

often, when i see homeless people on the street, i give them some spare change, when i have some. even now, as i'm basically broke and expect an unknown and likely way too huge sum for which i'll likely need a loan to pay. but i know how unfair the system is, i know how rigged it is and i'm still better off than some others are. i say "strong shoulders can carry more".

sometimes, there have been women approaching me, begging me to help them pay for medicine for their sick child. they seemed to be refugees. once, i gave one the full price of what the pills she wanted to buy at the next pharmacy did cost. it was at a busy train station, so nearly no one bat an eye, but my train was hellishly late, so i observed her. from afar, i saw her again, begging other people for more money. i came closer and heard her tell the same story. i followed her around. she wasn't alone in this, there were other women and they met and exchanged a few words. it was a whole coup.

now i receive more and more of these requests to help some victims of war. i'd like to, really. i know how fucked up war is. you don't want to know how well i'm aware of that. but i'm also well aware of fraud. and i have no way of telling if someone is a scammer or not.

honestly, the only ones with the actual power to help victims of war, to help the poor and the sick who get left behind in this madness of today's world, are the rich. not even just the 1%, although they have undoubtedly the most power. it can even be the upper 20% or 40%, i would guess, who could actually make a substantial difference. what is my dollar really going to do? and how often am i supposed to help? let's say i really do it and make cuts on my end so i can help the poor family out with 10$. then comes another. why help one and not another? but the victims of war are sheer endless. how easily can i lose 100$ because i say "strong shoulders can carry more". and certainly, if there are 100 people helping with 1$, it's 100$. if 1000 people help, it's 1000$. but where does the money go? to a real refugee, a real survivor, struggling to feed their children, or does it go so some random scammer, trying to make a dime on actual victims back?

i'm truly sorry, but i will not donate any money to any person i know nothing about. when i get out of my current struggle, and get back to work on a career, it is part of my plan to regularly donate or even work for charity, something where i can see what happens with the money.

the main career i strive for is becoming a trainer for communication skills, as all too often it is people untrue to themselves and people stuck in avoidance behavior who - unknowingly or not - cause damage. and it's those unable to speak up who keep swallowing everything. these communications trainings are used in companies and trainings of future managers. so i would get to educate and maybe have a positive influence on future bosses. just imagine, if this, my and other people's work, have a ripple effect and make managers hold themselves accountable, and communicate honestly. if people who usually wouldn't dare to set a boundary and stand up for themselves now do it without having conflict escalating. imagine future leaders being actual leaders and not just wannabe kings and queens. effects may likely only become visible after my death, if at all. but it's something i find worth doing for myself.

until then, i continue to donate blood and blood plasma - the latter sadly is a huge industry, too. i'm an organ donor and i'm part of a leucocythemia list, so i'm a possible donor there, too. there isn't anything more i can do, nor am i willing to do anything more right now. i'm not a samaritan. to me, this is just the right thing to do. i don't want extra respect for this. but i also won't listen to anyone trying to make me feel guilty for not doing more.

and the real end to war, all war, would come if we finally distribute resources more evenly and reasonably. we have systems, formulas and technology so no one on earth would have to starve or fight for their survival. and we have so much knowledge and know how to teach, that we could cut out any extremism for any religion. we could probably end homelessness. humankind does know and have these things, but they don't get funded, they are rarely made public and they get countered by...

the reason for this knowledge not being used, for changes not to be made, is that war, just as planned obsolescence and the decreasing funding in education and health care, serve a purpose: to keep the status quo, to keep the majority of people, the 99%ers, distracted so the rich can get richer. trickling down economics don't work, which had been proven over and over again.

this is as much political as i will get here, in this blog. there is such high polarization and an increase in extremism on all sides, that i'd rather not talk about it at all. let's just say that in my 40 years of life i have noticed and learned enough to identify why everything is going downhill for the majority of people - and why our climate dies.

Yes, he's in his og outfit even tho I have the skin, I just like it more

Even pulled Shenhe for him (even tho she ended up being my absolute favourite female chara in genshin) I even got the skin for her and broke my f2p journey

Her build is hybrid, support noblesse but also cryo goblet for some damage

I was saving the entire first year I played just to get him (I started to play on his banner but couldn't get him), I never got any Inazuma 5* except for Kazuha just to get Xiao.

..And then devs decided to rerun him every 3 months FUCK

Tried many different builds and teams for him (even pulled Albedo for double geo). Every time he was getting buffed, I got this chara/artifact.

Is my build doing enough damage? Still no. But he's still my favourite deadly little meow meow and I'm not ashamed to admit it (I kinda do cringe writing this please know it's meta ironic)

project update/where i've been/other stuff

Hey everyone! I know it's been a loooooooong time since I posted anything or gave any updates, but since I just updated the demo with some bug fixes--you can go here or to the pinned post on my page to download the new patch if you want to take the demo out for another spin--, I figured it was as good a time as any to talk about what's been going on.

This is probably going to turn into a long post, so if you don't want to read all of that, here's the tl;dr: Bloodbound: The Siege is still underway, I just was going through a really difficult period. Thank you all for your support of me and your continued enthusiasm for this project. It doesn't go unnoticed, and I'm really thankful for it.

Where I've Been

You know how sometimes someone will take forever to post an update to their fic and then the author's note will be like hey, sorry it took me so long to upload a new chapter, I was kidnapped? This is nothing like that. It's a lot less juicy, but I figured I'd still talk about it.

When I first started working on this visual novel, I was doing some freelance social media work, living with my family, and had a ton of free time on my hands. I would literally wake up every day and sit at my desk for 9+ hours a day, working on this project, making music, or writing screenplays.

At the end of last summer, I moved across the country, started grad school, and started working a pretty demanding job to support myself. It was also the first time since 2020 that I was doing any kind of significant socializing, and I was still working on this project, along with my other endeavors.

I felt like I was killing it. It didn't matter that wasn't getting a lot of sleep or really taking care of myself. I was somehow doing everything I wanted to do and needed to do.

And then...it caught up with me, right around when I released the demo for BBTS. I was having panic attacks at work, barely making deadlines for school, and it would take me half the day to work up the energy to get out of bed. It felt like I could do was sit in my room, watch Netflix, and doomscroll. Everything else was left to the wayside. Even though I was able to finish out my spring semester with good grades and left my job on good terms, I was hanging by the skin of my teeth. I also had some really messy stuff going on in my personal life that exacerbated these issues.

I had to spend this summer trying to rebuild myself and find a balance again. I'm in a much better place now--I started working out, which has been great for my anxiety, I quit vaping, I'm starting to be more conscious about what I put in my body and how it affects me, but I had to prioritize myself and my well being in order to get to this place.

As a side note, the experience of announcing this project and releasing this demo has been...strange. I put a lot of work into this project, from teaching myself how to code to writing the story, and this is the most visible thing I've ever put out. I was hoping maybe fifty people would play this demo and be like cool, but it's a much higher number, and a lot more feedback.

And that's both really cool and really scary. Cool because it's awesome that people appreciate something I created. Scary because now I want to make it good. I don't want to disappoint you all.

A Brief Tangent On How People Interact With Fandom Creators Sometimes

Even though I'm not always super active/interactive on here, I really enjoy getting asks about the project, whether it's hype, an inquiry, or feedback. Even if it's negative feedback, I know that it's coming from a good place. I also am really appreciative of messages that are either letting me know about bugs, or expressing any concerns about the story I am planning to tell. I don't take those kinds of things personally at all.

But I have noticed--and this is not just exclusive to the Choices fandom--that sometimes, people will interact with fic writers, fan devs, or really anyone that makes any kind of ContentTM in a way that isn't any of the aforementioned things I described above. Sometimes, the way that people interact with me--or other creators--is demanding, passive aggressive, or outright hostile. Other times, it may be well-intentioned, but it still feels like it's crossing some boundaries.

I'm extremely thankful to everyone who has reached out to check on me, but there's a huge difference between doing that and accusing me of abandoning this project and framing it as a deep moral failing on my part. I know I'm not the only person in this fandom that's experienced this. It really doesn't feel good, and it isn't helpful. Even if I had just decided I was no longer feeling BBTS and decided to dip, that isn't okay.

I additionally ask that in the event of another pause in posting on this project, people not reach out to me on my personal tumblr to ask about the status of this project, or to tell me to check my DMs or inbox on this page, or anything of that sort. To my recollection, I have never posted the URL my personal tumblr on this page. Like I said before, I'm appreciative of the fact that people are passionate about this project, but it's important to me to be able to keep this space and that space separate from one another.

I would absolutely understand any of this kind of behavior if there was money involved. If I had investors to answer to, or people pre-ordered the completed game from me and paid up front, people would absolutely be within their right to be frustrated with the radio silence that's been coming from my end and reach out to ask about the status of the game, or even be upset with me. But that isn't what's happening here.

This project is supposed to be fun. There's something really liberating about the fact that I can't ever monetize this or put it into a portfolio. It means it's for me and for you. We're all just supposed to be here because we like being here.

But part of the reason why the burnout and the anxiety I was experiencing spilled over into this project was because of these more pushy interactions. It made me feel like I was letting people down, or like the stakes of this were higher than they actually are.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, or like a diva. Like I said, I'm really appreciative of the reception of this project, and I'm grateful for any and all feedback, inquiries, or curiosities. But I just ask that everyone be respectful, and I don't think that's an unreasonable request. We'll all have a good time--both here and in the larger Choices fandom--if we're kind to one another, and if we're respectful of each other's boundaries.

Is Bloodbound: The Siege Still Happening?

Bloodbound: The Siege is still happening, but it is not going to be coming out this year, unless I somehow gain the ability to freeze time. Most of the sprite work is done--though I might do another round of retrofitting sprites into their respective dialogue boxes because I'm a glutton for punishment--and I'm pretty close to completing the more detailed outline of this story.

While I'm not ready to do this yet, it is extremely likely that by the end of the year, I'll start seeking out additional help for this project, mostly with programming. There will be a more detailed post about that when the time comes.

Event Horizon: This hell cathedral is also a possessed space ship?! YES! This has some of the best character intros and practical effects I've ever seen (it's also very schlocky) - I loved it and watched it three times in a row.

something really interesting to me is how call of duty has devs that are obviously massive gun nerds but like the other 2/3's of the staff are completely oblivious. like instead of the standard generic "ak-47" it's called the kastov 7.62 and it's clearly based off of an ak-103. like you can turn it into different versions of the ak platform that are in 7.62. there's also another one for 5.45 based on the 74M that accepts mostly the same stuff but with a few differences here and there. you can turn them into the carbine variants or give them the original wood furniture with some playing around. they even added the 107 and 109 as "conversion" kits, which are really cool and niche gun science things in their own right. they've even got really accurate reload animations with references to how people actually use these things. and then you look at the different skins and there's one that turns it into a bong that shoots weed bullets and turns people into vape clouds with a retail price of £16.79 and you get very upset

The time has come: top ten new-to-me movies of 2024. Fully a wrenching decision every time, and what makes the final cut almost always comes down to vibes. (And I cheated with bonus choices this year, too.) As ever, unranked.

Ace in the Hole (1951) - No one was doing it like Billy Wilder in 1951 and no one has done it like him since. A pitch-black social critique that inspired the thought, while I was watching it, "I think human beings shouldn't know about things that happen too far away from them" (an argument that apparently predates social media by decades). Maybe the slimiest I've ever seen Kirk Douglas, which is saying something. Also contains a sinister but effective earworm.

Beau Travail (1999) - I watched my first two Claire Denis films this year, and Chocolat was also fascinating. But Beau Travail is really doing something next level with framing and movement and bodies on film. Nominally a retelling of Billy Budd, but in fact mostly a meditation on the fragility of masculinity. I keep thinking of images from this on the regular, especially the ending.

Challengers (2024) - I am getting less normal about this movie the longer I think about it and the more times I see it. Electric score, terrific performances, tight screenplay. But mostly, it makes me want to chew my own arm off (complimentary).

La Chimera (2023) - A movie I watched and instantly wanted to watch again the moment the credits rolled. A gorgeously shot meditation on grief and art and connection (or lack thereof). While I can talk about everything this movie does right, there's some level on which it affected me that just feels a little like a magic spell.

Conclave (2024) - Delightful when a movie feels made specifically for me. "Here's a bunch of your favorite actors working right now in an essentially lowbrow political thriller executed to absolute perfection, and also it's about the conflicts between personal faith and organized religion. We're working a tight point-of-view without over-explaining the main character's mental state. You also get to see a cardinal vaping in the bitchiest way possible." I mean.

Godzilla Minus One (2023) - Sorry I didn't double feature this with Oppenheimer last year, tbh. A moving drama about the plight of ordinary people and the burden of survivors' guilt in postwar Japan. Also Godzilla is there.

Monkey Man (2024) - I am a sucker for a good revenge story, and Dev Patel's directorial debut is an all-timer. From the camera work to the editing to the framing, it's all so wildly assured for a first feature! And all of that works in service of a memorable action story with an intersectional message. Chef's kiss.

Malcolm X (1992) - Hey, have you heard of this Denzel Washington guy? I think he's going places.

Just a truly insane achievement in filmmaking, which you didn't even need it to be! With that performance at the center, Spike Lee could have fully phoned everything else in!

Past Lives (2023) - This film inspired such a quiet ache in the center of my chest and I don't think it's fully gone away since. Quiet and honest and lovely and heartbreaking. I wouldn't change a single thing about it.

Scenes from a Marriage (1973) - This is maybe slightly cheating for the definition of a movie, because I watched the 283-minute cut, which is probably more realistically a TV miniseries (as opposed to the 169-minute theatrical release). That said! This was so wildly compelling to me that I watched it all in two sittings, and it would have been one if I hadn't had to leave the house for an appointment 2/3 of the way through. The two leads, but especially Liv Ullmann, are giving a master class in naturalistic screen acting. I couldn't look away. Bergman!! What a filmmaker, hot damn.

BONUS SELECTIONS

1) I am slowly trying to work my way through seeing at least one film from every country, so I designated my mid-week watches "World Wednesday(/ Travel Thursday)." Side note: Please distribute some comedies more widely, film companies, so many of the picks that are well known or easily available here in the U.S. are just crushingly sad.

My favorite World Wednesday selection was also crushing, but still highly recommended:

Flee (2021) - A compelling story about life before and after becoming a refugee. I was riveted from start to finish. Incredibly raw but also very tender.

2) It was my fourth year of attempting the Criterion Challenge on Letterboxd. So for the second bonus, my favorite Criterion Challenge film that didn't make the regular top ten was:

To Be or Not to Be (1942) - Ernst Lubitsch was already one of my favorite directors, but this film was cooking with gas. Actors, Shakespeare, spies, resisting the Nazis? Yes please, across the board.
