for the ask thing: 🔥
Tumblr media
🔥 if you were in the life games, how would you play it?
this is such a fun question because i actually will be participating in a re-created double life series soon for fun with some friends!
i'm not that great at pvp, nor at redstone or traps or anything like that, but i dooo loooove me some roleplay and i do loooove me some improv. i like being the bad guy more than anything, but like a dark gray kinda bad guy. if i were at my peak ideal play, i'd be something along the lines of lawful evil. all about deals, all about technicalities, trying to one-up people, taking advantage of others, etc.
now am i skilled enough to do that? probably not. but that's the vibe i'd want my "character" to be.

🚱 going down 🚱
// RPF, phone sex, JOI, edging, voice kink, brief daddy kink, cheating mention, light internalized homophobia, dom Bdubs, sub Guude, OOG
👾 ao3
👾 word count: 6,157
👾 summary ->
Legendary, Guude’s POV, ep 23 2:25
Guude: It’s a dead end if you go straight too. I’m dead again.
Bdubs: Is it really?
ᗧ••••ᗣ
Bdubs: sounding strained, desperate Just go, go, go! Don’t die from frustrated breathing damage!!
Guude: Did you die?
Bdubs: in a quiet huff of air Yeah. louder, normally So, okay, so you go down.
Guude: giggles Are you calling me a fag?
ᗧ••••••••••••••••••ᗣ•••••••••••ᗣ ••••••••••••ᗣ
If anyone asks, Guude’s losing his mind and Vechs map induced insanity has set in. But Bdubs is just making all these noises, and talking about edging, and really, how was he supposed to not be hard at this point?

A few years ago, there was a niche of mincraft maps for these people.
Adventure maps could do exactly that. One of my favorite things in mincraft was Vechs Supre Hostile maps, which were custom made giant survival mode dungeons, with fun gear, some of which was made useing enchantments a player couldn't normally get and a objective focused around comleteing a trophy monument.
Unfortunatly, these seem to be much less prevalent now days.
A lot of "Minecraft is BAD" videos are really annoying because, like, there's actually a lot of things that could use fixing, yes, but you're just trying to turn this into 3D Terraria. I think a lot of people who make these videos forget that most Minecraft players are intrinsically motivated, rather than extrinsically. It's a sandbox game at heart, the vanilla experience does not need highly-controlled level progression.

I'm serious though. cleo started playing minecraft (and uploading on youtube) at the same time as bdubs. she was friends w vechs who was THE map maker (think super hostile, race for the wool. she played all the same maps etho and bdubs did, competed in the same RFTW competitions. etho was also friends w vechs too lol). she played w zisteau, pauseunpause, and millbee– all whom were later invited to join mindcrack and went on to befriend etho and bdubs. i don't think she was invited to join mindcrack for one simple reason and it's unfortunately... you guessed it... good ol' fashioned sexism
i'm just so happy that cleo is now finally getting her due. the life series really opened so many doors for her and now she's getting invited to other smps by scott and has made a bunch of friends she wouldn't have made otherwise. and also finally at long last... clethubs
in an alternate universe cleo was invited to join mindcrack and we had clethubs from the beginning

Y'all should be following the CTM Minecraft community (if you like ToTK)
I think many people are probably passingly familiar with Complete The Monument adventure maps. They're a style of Minecraft map where you have to find a certain number of objectives (often wool blocks) and return them to a monument to complete the adventure. Many people are probably familiar with Vech's Super Hostile back in the day, but haven't paid any attention since.
But since that time, the "Open World Game" has gone through 3-4 cycles of reinvention. Mapmakers have looked at stuff like breath of the wild, bloodborne, and outer wilds, and then thought "how would I adapt this to minecraft?"
And the results are pretty incredible. It's open world action games mixed with an experimental indie vibe. People are pushing the genre in weird and creative directions that are too risky for million-dollar studios.
If you have any interest in game design, I truly think this is a community to watch, because they're doing something very cool. Some of them are stunningly beautiful. Some have incredibly-designed combat that pushes minecraft to its limits. Some add new mechanics altogether. And some are a 15-year-old's first attempt that's largely mediocre with a few flashes of brilliance. They all feel fresh and weird and lovely!

I'm an outsider/lurker, but if you want to try one out and get started, I'd recommend checking out Undergrove Jungle (short and on-the-easier-side), or check out the full list or join the community discord for more suggestions.

I said it in the tags of another post but it deserves its own post.
MCC's minigames have a rich history; from aspects of the format to the games themselves being part of the Noxcrew Gameshow 5-6 years ago, to being based on Minecraft community-created competitive skills.
Parkour Warrior called to mind the "jumping puzzles" and parkour that's long been a part of the Minecraft meta, especially popular in early downloadable maps (such as those often played by youtubers). That skillset has, over the years, been refined and highly specialized by a niche of players.
Survival Games is... well... Survival Games. When the Hunger Games franchise boomed into popularity in 2014, the format of a battle royale that slowly eliminated players became very popular. Over time its dominance waned, but in 2019 we saw it come back for Minecraft Monday, and the Noxcrew have taken the familiar format and made it feel new again.
Sands of Time is the legacy of Vech's Super Hostile maps; players no longer have to complete any monuments, but there's a familiar feeling in players scavenging for every torch and arrow they can get, lighting up the dark in winding tunnels and trying desperately to not get killed while they seek out the treasure
Sky Battle is the Noxcrew's take on Sky Wars, the last-man-standing PVP minigame of Hypixel. Both games are fast-paced and feature players rushing toward the middle and desperately trying to avoid falling into the void
Grid Runners is a speedrunning minigame, which is fitting for the newest addition to the MCC lineup. Like the many Minecraft speedrunning categories, the objectives each room in Grid Runners gives you will vary wildly - but no matter what it is, the goal is to get it done as fast as possible. Fitting for a roster of MCC sweats who like to speedrun in their downtime.
Part of what makes MCC so remarkable is that the Noxcrew take these game modes and minigames and polish them, make them feel new and exciting again. Survival Games in Minecraft Monday felt like a drag to watch, the muted colors of vanilla Minecraft felt almost depressing and made the entire event seem lazily made. But Survival Games, hosted on the maps the Noxcrew has made themselves, with the brightly saturated rainbow colors of the MCC resource pack and their cartoony on-theme tombstones, feels so much more exciting and alive - and the music composed by Epic Landlord really helps sell that feeling.
MCC is as much a testament to what you can make using Minecraft as it is to the community that's been finding ways to compete in a sandbox for over a decade.

On the topic of death as a form of transsexuality
(I tried to put a readmore, but all those Tumblr mobile guides on how to do it are bullshit it seems)
So there are a lot of things that could be written about Joe Hills. He knows that, after all, he is one of his favorite subjects to write about.
Well, okay, that sounded pretty self centered, but he just meant that each artist writes from what they know first and foremost.
What does Joe know face first like that?
ZombieCleo is an undead Minecraft youtuber, someone who famously escaped death and made it her whole thing, notably good with armor stand art. Joe also knows them better than that, but it is a good practice to familiarize yourself with the surface level knowledge most people have on subjects, too. We have been friends for over a decade now, must be, but known each other for longer, and have been vaguely aware of the other's existence a little more. Joe knows Cleo's name. He forgets it sometimes.
As a kid, Joe read in one of the mythology books about the concept of a true name. It is a big deal, kinda, and knowing someone's true name in many cultures means having power over them. Probably the closest to that we could come in real life is knowing someone's real life name on the internet, the place where everyone goes by nicknames. It does, however, create an odd double point on whether your legal name or your more chosen name would be your true one.
Well, Joe Hills from Nashville, Tennessee already lets strangers have power over his life, in a way, so them knowing his true name is only fitting. It is still a big concept to think about.
It is a common topic in transsexual art to feature the artist talking to their past self, or maybe just looking back on them as a different person. It's easy to create this disconnect, since transition is an art of creating a different image of yourself. It's a creation of you. The parallels of needing to create a persona for your job as a youtuber and the way a transsexual creates a persona for their cis environment don't escape Joe, certainly.
It's easy to look at myself as I were and despise me. Others may not see it or not know it, for the better. It is a revolutionary act of acceptance to be friends with myself, though.
This is how I would have written a letter to my future self: A few serious words for Joe Hills. ZombieCleo's challenge accepted. With swords up each other's faces, on a map invited to by Vechs, and if you pronounced that right it then it should rhyme. 13 years ago, and it was great. The winner gets to keep the name for the both of us.
I didn't send a letter, if course. Maybe it was rude not to notify you about what would happen. There is cosmic horror in seeing yourself in a friend you've known this long. To realize that you are not the persona you have been trying to upkeep, and worst of all, the living future of yourself is sitting right across the screen, rambling about pinball. It's this weird one-sided overwhelming knowledge, because from the other side of things, I have always known. To see yourself in the mirror, and realize you have been staring in the void this whole time.
When I look in the end gateway, and see the stars and the emptiness in it, I think back to what I saw in myself.
To conquer death was to see my gender and befriend who I was instead of mourn her. And I'm sorry for raising you from the dead, my dear.
I love to write poetry about you, and therefore about me. You are my favorite subject.
