Such a fun writers workshop tonight! Thank you @audiofanficpod! Missing @frangipanidownunder and all other participants of the past. Hope to see you at the next one. Posting my response to prompts tonight, in hopes of maintaining momentum.
The first:
Tumblr media
“Pick a key,” Mulder said, setting two keys of similar profiles in front of her.
They were thick and ancient, with a patina that had probably been earned. They looked so old – practically antediluvian – that she thought briefly that if the locks they unbolted survived, the doors they had protected probably had not. Nevertheless, she placed a finger lightly on the more aged of the two, sliding the old passe-partout away from her and towards her partner. The metal was cold on her skin, dense and dinged up; it looked like he’d pulled it out of the mote of an old castle, or unearthed it from an Ionian’s grave.
“I don’t think I want to know what this is to,” she said, flitting her eyes quickly to his.
“If I said ‘my heart’ would it engender affection or rage?”
“Vexation, probably.” She rolled the tip of her tongue over the inside of her cheek.
“Okay, then. I’ll just stick with my original plan.” He pocketed the other key, and then slid the one she’d chosen into the pocket at the front of her shirt. It didn’t fit in all the way, and pulled at the loose material, the metal heavy and thick.
“Which is?”
“Get in the car and find out.”
“Is this because I got you a book?” She watched as his nostrils flared in irritation. It was always kind of fun to rile him.
“Get in the car, Scully.”
She obeyed obediently, and soon they were out of the city, sloshing down the parkway which was choked with gray slush and into farm country past McLean, where the snow was laid out in fields of unending white.
Mulder pulled into a driveway that ended at a big red barn, and he killed the ignition once they reached its zenith. He pointed to a small door tucked into one corner.
“You’re going to need your key,” he said.
“This is my Christmas present?” she asked, and his only answer was to once again point to where she needed to go, silent as Scrooge’s third ghost.
Outside the car, the air seemed thin, cold. Her breath in front of her like steam; reedy and short. She pulled the key out skeptically, though the door’s lock seemed a perfect, hoary match. She inserted the key, wiggled it around. The mechanisms inside, probably numbering two total, clicked into place with only a minimal effort.
The door creaked open into the dark cold of the barn, the heady smell of hay laying low in the winter air. Mulder found a light switch just inside and a single bulb shone down like a spotlight on an old flywheeler that squatted on a packed dirt floor, a workshop bench crowded with greenish jars filled with nails and screws. There were the dulled farming implements of a bygone era; a scythe, a broadfork, a hand plow. There was vintage tack hanging from hooks on the wall; the bits turned black, the leather wearing away.
“Come on,” he said quietly, pulling at her sleeve. There was light coming from the space on the other end of the barn, past shelving units and pony walls. It wasn’t exactly quiet either, not like Scully expected it to be. There was something up ahead. A presence. If it was a ghost, she’d wring Mulder’s damn neck.
They shuffled through the space on silent feet, the dirt floor packed and dry, a little uneven. Only when they got a bit closer to the light did she pick up on quiet, horsey sounds; the stamp of a hoof on straw, a soft nicker. Her hand reached out of its own accord and grabbed Mulder’s.
And then there it was: the snowiest, whitest horse she had ever seen in her life. Its coat was as pure as a snow drift, muscles rippling over its substantial frame. It turned to them when they walked into the small area outside its stall, its head bobbing up, sniffing the air, probably hoping they had brought it an apple, a carrot. It blinked at them slowly with the longest, whitest eyelashes Scully had ever beheld.
She gave a sharp intake of breath. “Oh…”
The moment held a quiet, magical quality, as if all the angels had stopped to listen, had turned their eyes toward Mulder and Scully and this pure white horse.
“This,” Mulder said, his voice low, “is Sailor. And if you’re game, he’s going to take us on a sleigh ride.”

sanitized for your protection
(by putting shag carpet over her 1970s ‘shag carpet’)
Tumblr media
I saw this vintage sexy photo and said, “hey, my grandparents had that Zenith television!” Watched Lawrence Welk on it in elementary school, I did. It has those handles on the bottom front panel and scrollwork back piece on the top, both designed to make your TV look like it were a dresser or cabinet, but there are no drawers on the bottom, the handles are just for decoration.
Back then, a “remote control” was your grandfather sending you to turn the knob to change the channel so he didn’t have to get out of his La-Z-Boy. That box on the top, for your information, is an adjustable UHF antenna, since that aerial on the roof isn’t doing quite enough and three clicks clockwise make Channel 47 (KYVE, Public Television) come in a little less fuzzy.

ebwinter: I’ve been a watch guy for a long time and now I’m starting to learn a ton about vintage watches. @dcvintagewatches just tracked down my first one! The Seiko Ref. 6139. Back in the 1970’s, Swiss watchmakers Heuer and Zenith had taken hold of the entire sports watch industry with their well-publicized race to become the first to produce an automatic chronograph (then a bit like the race to develop the smart phone).  It’s been debated who won, but in the background of the skirmish, Seiko quietly created their own, beating the Swiss at their own game.    During the early months of 1969, Seiko put the final touches on its revolutionary 6139 chronograph, and the Japanese company began placing the 6139 in automatic chronographs as early as January of the same year, and would eventually put out a wide range of models with the movement, to include mine. #newhobby #watches #seiko

Market Strategy of the watch market after the Quartz Crisis
DongHyeok Park
UCI 28323216
Since middle school, I have been a massive fan of watches, especially mechanical watches (automatic and manual). A mechanical watch uses a clockwork mechanism to measure time, while a quartz watch utilizes a battery (WatchBox). Mechanical watches were commonly used until December 25, 1969, when the first quartz watch came out by Seiko.
The creation of quartz watches brought tragedy to the mechanical watch market. First of all, quartz watches were significantly cheaper than mechanical watches due to the number of its component. Second, quartz watch is more reliable and accurate than mechanical watches. Lastly, quartz watches still operate without wearing for a few months, while mechanical watches require you to wind it up or wear it at least once in a few days. Because of the above reasons, many people started to choose quartz watches over mechanical watches, which is called the ‘Quartz crisis’ or ‘Quartz revolution.’
Many Swiss watch companies, such as Universal Geneve, Cortebert, Enicar, and Wittnauer, went bankrupt due to the quartz crisis. Fortunately, big names like Breitling, Zenith, Longines, Blancpain, and Omega were in serious trouble but survived (Chrono 24).
Watch companies that survived the revolution soon realize they need a strategy change. Therefore, companies like Swatch and TAG Heuer have decided to produce quartz watches to lower their production cost and the selling price.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, advocates of mechanical watches revived the brands by relying exclusively on mechanical movements. Even though most of the market shifted its focus to quartz movements, they realized that there were loyal customers who would continue to pay higher prices for vintage mechanical watches. Prestigious watch brands such as Patek Phillippe, Rolex, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet followed this path and formed the basis for today’s luxury watch market (WatchMaster).

Vintage Zenith Men's TimeComand Wrist Watch, Quartz Movement, Analog Time With LED Digital Readout, Original Band, Swiss-Made, Circa Mid-1970s
flickr
Vintage Zenith Men's TimeComand Wrist Watch, Quartz Movement, Analog Time With LED Digital Readout, Original Band, Swiss-Made, Circa Mid-1970s by Joe Haupt Via Flickr: In 1971, Zenith Radio Corporation acquired a majority interest in the Movado-Zenith-Mondia Holding Company of Switzerland. The Swiss Zenith watch company was founded in 1865. Prior to the acquisition, Zenith watches had won many prizes for their precision and quality in the Swiss watch industry. Movado was established in 1881, and the company was well-known in the United States in 1971 as a prestige line of fine watches. Founded in 1905, the Mondia company made a line of watches in the moderate priced field. Zenith Radio Corporation's foray into watchmaking was short-lived. In 1978, the company exited the field when they sold off their money-losing Swiss watchmaking subsidiary. It is interesting to note that watchmaker Charles Vermot is honored on the current Zenith SA watch company's website. In 1975, according to the Zenith website, he hid the plans, parts, and tools required to make mechanical movements in order to save them from destruction. This was following the decision of the company that owned Zenith at the time (the not to be named Zenith Radio Corporation) to limit production to quartz watches only.

Why have the 2000s started to seem like the ‘80s?
Why have the 2000s started to seem like the ‘80s?
It feels like distant, yet vivid memories. Short Kameez’s, baggie jeans, loose t-shirts, watches with humongous dials, and the side-bags we used to carry so elegantly can now be categorized as ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’. Heck, my second-hand, 1998 manufactured Floyd rose Cort Guitar turns 25 this year, while my vintage Signature acoustic just turned 18. I still have our family’s 1993 Zenith (Russian) film camera, which was last used in 2003, and yes, it’s a collectible now.
What’s even more interesting is the fact that the earlier YouTube videos were more fascinating than the billions that have constipated the site today – quality of videos always trump video qualities – well, I say this now, but back then, we all thought those videos were of no quality whatsoever.
A trip to Helvetia in Rifle’s square now seems like a trip down memory lane.
To my utter dismay, I hate to admit, we are old. Many of us are closer to the 40s than to the age of 25, regardless of what our certificates say.
You might ask – how is this news to you? I’ll tell you how. I went to the studio to take new photos to be used as passport sized photos for the thousands of documents that we need to submit, because apparently the photo that I’ve been using since 2012 doesn’t really match with my current face. But that’s not what troubled me. The sheer fact that the editor asked if he should edit out my gray hair simply took me by surprise – the last time I heard this statement was when it was asked to my father 25 years back in a similar context. Ergo, I am old, vintage and retro, and wiser than I was, apparently.

Ultimately, after setting a budget and doing some research on what types of movements are available during your desired era (for instance, 1877 lever movement models), it wouldn’t hurt to open your heart up around local estate sales or niche Facebook groups related to pocket watches/antiques – since sellers tend to be more forthright with fellow “experts” over virtual platforms than commercial ones.
