Friday, January 27: Motörhead, “Civil War”
R.I.P. Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister (1945-2015)
Although Motörhead was working as a trio for the first time in over a decade, “Civil War” opened Overnight Sensation with the same sort of full-throttle fury the band accomplished during the Würzel years, proving that the Kilmister/ Campbell/Dee combo was more than capable enough to sustain itself.  Lemmy may not have had anything to prove by this point, but Phil Campbell showed he could handle all guitar duties by plowing trough a central riff that was steady and deceptively simple in its steamrolling, perfectly keeping up with Mikkey Dee’s similarly stealthy drumming- his percussion had the necessary attack, but he layered in semi-progressive flourishes honed during his early years with King Diamond.  All of this made “Civil War” both a prototypical Motörhead barnburner and also its own thing that reflected the chemistry of this lineup: it flattened the room, and Lemmy’s lyrics and snarl were as cutting as ever, but there was a sophistication lurking underneath that could have only come from these three individuals working together.

In 1983, following the departure of Brian Robertson, Motörhead frontman, Lemmy, held auditions for a new guitarist, narrowing the candidates down to two guitarists - Michael “Würzel” Burston and Philip Campbell. Lemmy had first planned only to hire one guitarist, but upon hearing Würzel and Campbell play together, Lemmy hired them both.

On February 14, 1984, Motörhead recorded the backing track for The Young Ones episode “Bambi”. One of the band’s most popular compilations, No Remorse, followed shortly, it was released on September 15. Campbell has since toured the world with the band and has remained a constant member of Motörhead, despite a number of changes to their line up over the years.

Tuesday, October 10: Suppressive Fire, "No Man's Land"
Lemmy always insisted that Motӧrhead was a rock and roll band, nothing more or less, but the group’s inherent scuzziness ensured that the bulk of their influence would shine through in similarly greasy, grimy and misanthropic metal acts.  And so while Suppressive Fire’s most direct antecedents were extreme thrashers like Kreator, Celtic Frost and Toxic Holocaust, “No Man’s Land” simply couldn’t exist had not Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Philthy Phil (alongside Würzel, Phil Campbell and Mikkey, of course) bulldozed the original path.  This was gross and antisocial, with guttural vocals and a yearning desire to do nothing more than just kick some ass, and it certainly did that, belching and bulldozing its way and leaving a distinct stench on the way out.

Overnight Sensation is the #thirteenth #studio #album by the #heavy #metal #band Motörhead released 15 October 1996, their second on the Steamhammer label.
The ironically titled Overnight Sensation was Motörhead's third album with producer Howard Benson. Following the departure of Würzel(Michael Burston) in 1995, the band returned to the same three-man "classic Motörhead line up"; bass guitar/vocals, lead guitar, and drums. This album was also the first since Ace of Spades (1980) to have a picture of the band on the cover. Despite being only a three-piece band, the band had a heavier style on this work than on its previous album, Sacrifice. [3] Vocalist and bassist Lemmy Kilmister recalls that, amidst the touring, the record took about four weeks to write new songs and four weeks to record in the studio.
