Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and yes I'm late, so sue me
I wasn't going to watch any of the PiB movies but I heard 'Death' was a character, so
First two minutes: It's GORGEOUS and here's an entire post of me freaking out over the visual mastery of this film
Tumblr media
If I'd seen this in theatres today I'd get kicked out for gasping so much
I can't even
Tumblr media
The animation style is so beautiful I'm gasping out loud and had to stop three minutes in to begin this post, it's wild. The particles - !
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THE TEXTURE OF THE LEATHER HAT. THE ANIMATORS ARE FLEXING AND THEY ARE FLEXING HARD.
Tumblr media
Every single frame of this film is a goddamn work of art. Look at the stars on the wooden ceiling. Look at the lighting.
Tumblr media
Even the reflection in the glass, holy shit
Tumblr media
They need to stop flexing before I have a frickin heart attack here
Also thank you for putting actual blood and not just a reddish cut, actual dripping blood, thank you :)
Tumblr media
This is such a love letter to animation and art and I'm here for it
Tumblr media
The scene transitions are absolute *chef's kiss*
THEY ACTUALLY *BEEPED* OUT A SWEAR WORD it's a third of the way through and this is my new favorite movie
Each glitter particle glistens in its own moment, I cannot
I feel like a lot of modern movies have some weird fear of putting genuine color into a film. WELL NOT HERE FOLKS. ABSOLUTE PSYCHODELIC COLOR EXPLOSIONS THROUGHOUT.
Tumblr media
What the fuck, that escalated quickly
Tumblr media
SIR WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?
THe dog has a potty mouth and every swear word is BEEP'd out and he swore a LOT
I love how all of the characters just rant the fuck off in Spanish when they get mad
I didn't see the other Puss movies but Softpaws?? Was declawed at some point?? That's so mean?? that's literally amputations omg her poor hands
And she left Puss at the altar at the same time that HE left HER at the altar, these assholes deserve each other at this point because absolutely nobody else will put up with either of them on a serious level
Tumblr media
except for the dog, who deserves the world. LOOK AT HIM
Tumblr media
Kitty wasn't going to wait for a egocentric asshat to put down his ego for her, YOU GO GIRL
somebody put the puppy in a sock and tried to drown him omg
he has the saddest backstory but he's just happy to have his life and his friends, whereas Puss had nine lives and didn't appreciate any of them, okay, I get it now
The dog actually calmed Puss down from a panic attack and you could hear his heartbeat calming and it was really sweet
Tumblr media
The framing of this film is fantastic. Also, Death? Actual Death? The thing that Puss wasn't aware he was afraid of or even needed to be afraid of yet was running from his entire life? Such an incredible villain
Tumblr media
I can't concentrate on anything else about the movie because everything is just so goddamn pretty.
Tumblr media
The movements and the visuals are just a little bit choppy and a little unfinished, making every still look like a painting. It's so stylized and wonderfully so
Tumblr media
jesus christ what a visual callback
Okay movie's done and I can talk now
THE CAT LADY i love her <3
I appreciate that Goldilocks finally accepted her family but it's okay to want other things, I think, as long as you're not taking for granted what you currently have. That said, they're definitely going to have to talk it out because stuff like that doesn't just go away with a quip and a new business plan
One that note, the fucking cricket was hilarious. John Mulaney's character was a riot and I appreciate the cricket giving up on him as a bad job.
I was worried about Death's defeat being a bit of a cop-out but it wasn't. Death was angry that Puss was given so many lives and appreciated exactly none of them, thinking himself invincible forever, not understanding consequences because they never really applied to him, so they decided to cheat and take his last one early. But Puss accepted his mortality and began to appreciate his last life properly, so Death let him live it. It was done well.
I don't really like the 'tough girl no trust femme fatale love interest' thing, I think it's tired and overwrought, so Kitty wasn't my favorite, but I liked her anyway. And I liked that she's able to poor-little-meow-meow Puss when he least expects it.
The doctor scene where we went through each of Puss's lives was storyboarded so beautifully, even the title cards were gorgeous
the fight scenes are so pretty
I can't do anything besides gush over how fucking pretty this film was, I'm useless
Anyway watch the film, it's just a masterpiece and the music was fantastic and I loved the whole thing

I'm seeing the new Puss in Boots movie tomorrow, so to prepare myself, I've been binge-watching all of the Shrek movies and the first PIB just to refresh my memory.
In sum:
Shrek 1: Still an absolute masterpiece. I feel the older I get, the more I appreciate it and the music. 9.5/10
Shrek 2: Somehow, it's even more perfect than the first one. The "I Need a Hero" sequence is just as iconic as it always was, and there are several other scenes that still make me crack up every single time (like the fast food one). 10/10
Shrek the Third: Arguably the weakest film on this list. Some good ideas, but the plot never seems to come together cohesively, and most of the jokes don't land, unfortunately. 5.5/10
Shrek Forever After: While it's not as strong a Shrek film as the first two, I still think it's a solid movie overall. Lots of really emotional scenes, and Rumpelstiltskin is a decent villain. (Side note: I've felt for a long time the Rumpelstiltskin story would make for an interesting Disney adaptation if done well. Mouse House, get on it!) I think it's underrated, IMO. 8/10
Puss in Boots: Overall fun, creative, action-filled movie. Can be a tad predictable at times, but all the good stuff and cute kitties make up for it. 7.5/10
I'm now prepared.

Random (spoiler-free) thoughts on new Across the Spider-Verse movie
Just got back from watching Across the spider-verse in cinemas. I had fun writing my thoughts on the last cinema release on my blog so I wanna do it again since I've been watching loads of new movies lately. My previous epic review that was on Guardians of the galaxy 3 is here. ANYWAY!!1 I only have a few things i wanted to say since I ain't gonna spoil anything. So this is gonna be less of a structured review, more of just a ramble. Firstly HOLY FUCKING SHiTTING FUCK THE ANIMATION. Imagine if you supercharged the previous movie with LSD and adrenaline and every frame could be a movie poster. Ik that's basically the same as the last movie but yeah this one killed it even harder. Also wanna shoutout that character "The Spot" from the trailer. That guy. fucking. rocks. That is all. You will enjoy him in the movie. Also the ending. I wont say anything. All I'll say, is holy fuck. Let's just say the packed cinema i was in made some noise. Overall, I'd honestly probably give it a 7.5/10. Like, dear god the animation was amazing, and the story was also SO GOOD.. it just had a few eyebrow raising moments. If i compare it to puss in boots, i prefer the animation in spiderverse, but i prefer the story in puss in boots (probably enjoyed PIB more overall too. Also PIB's like a 9/10 movie to me) but yeah, that movie was fuckign amazing, go watch it if you can. Okay have a nice day sleep well good morning hope you win the lottery P.S. to the guy who literally was on the phone to his mum in front of me DURING THE MOVIE ermmmm fuck you????

PIB & TBHS; Chapter 1: Once Upon a Time
(Spoiler for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and for @the-invisible-kaiju)
Puss in Boots wasn’t expected that his old rival from the past returned to Shrek and Fiona’s Anniversary at Far Far Away Royal Ball that might lead him to many questions that he couldn’t bring himself to tell anyone. Especially Kitty Softpaws who doesn’t know what’s going on with him as he is keeping his distance from anyone he cares as he discovered from the certain wolf.
This is dedicated to the new movie of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish that may got spoiler alert through the chapters that you read.
(When it comes to the beginning of the story, it will always comes with ‘Once Upon a Time’…)
The sunlight shines on the brown book that was written in gold details, ‘Puss in Boots and the Bounty Hunter’s Secret’. It magically opened up to see two pages at the beginning; Page 1, a little orange kitten in the basket covered with red blanket with the wind blew it up to the orphanage. Page 2, the women picked up the kitten in her arms with the blanket along.
Once upon a time, in a very long time ago, the owner of the orphanage found a little kitten named Puss who somehow got her to take him to her heart and raised him as her own son.
The pages suddenly turned into the next pages; Page 3, Puss meet the egg after defeating the bullies who being mean to the egg. Page 4, Puss and the egg were hunting for the beans as they grow few plants in the shred.
While being at the orphanage, Puss met the egg named Humpty Dumpty and they became fast friends as they were hunting for the magic beans as it meant everything to them.
The pages tuned again to the next part of the book; Page 5, Puss and Humpty were stealing from everyone with Humpty delighted and Puss guilt. Page 6, Puss saved the day of lady with everyone watching in shock because of his courage.
The years gone by, and those two were stealing from other people with Puss feeling guilty that didn’t show Humpty any sympathy. Until one day, Puss be able to save the old lady from being ran over by the bull. Everyone shocked because Puss saved the Captain’s mother, claiming him to be the hero of his hometown.
The pages turned to the next pages; Page 7, his adopted mother gives him the name like no other with boots, hat, belt, sword and a cape. Page 8, Puss practice his sword fighting skills as the sun sets and Humpty spend the night in the cell for stealing.
His mother gave Puss the title with the boots that symbol of honour and justice. And that title was know as Puss in Boots, and with that Puss proved his destiny was brighter than the sun while Humpty’s road grown much darker.
The pages turned to the other pages; Page 9, Puss runs away from his home after abandoned Humpty when he framed him to steal all the money that falls into the river over the bridge. Page 10, Puss found the bar under the full moon.
Then one night, Humpty made a grave mistake that got himself being abandoned by Puss who got betrayed by Humpty himself as the money that Humpty got him and Puss to steal fell in the river which lead Puss run away from his hometown. After a long walk, Puss stepped upon the bar where the night slowly went down to the dark side of purpose.
The pages then turned into the next pages; Page 11, Puss enter the bar with everyone looked at him. Page 12, Puss met the mystery person in a dark brown cloak as he sat down next to them.
As Puss settled in the bar, he was encountered by a mystery person in a dark brown cloak that was a bit bigger than the other people around them. They started to talk about their past and they were about to be friends until the guards came to find Puss.

All Is Found (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Version)
(Based on the song from Frozen 2)
🌟⭐️🌟
When the wolf howls through the night
There’s a shooting star that shines so bright
Stardust sparkles on those clouds
To make a missing dream finally found
🌟⭐️🌟
In each and every story had a tale
About those authors who feared to fail
To create a story about the beast
Who hunted his prey for a satisfying feast
🌟⭐️🌟
But they don’t know that he’s not all bad
‘Cause in his song, that whistle flows
To prove that he’s sometimes glad
That those will face what challenge knows
🌟⭐️🌟
Instead of howling, he whistles the night
Hoping someone will overcome his light
To have the moment we’ve waited for
Where the wolf’s heart will heal it more
🌟⭐️🌟
(Something came to my head while singing to that song and I thought maybe I should write it down and post, what do you think?)

Saw The Bad Guys yesterday. It was very cool and fun. The animation style and direction is addictive to watch.
I was always a Dreamworks stan, so I'm happy they brought their game with this.
(Also saw the trailer for the new Puss in Boots. The style reminds me of Spider-verse. 🧐 Wonder if they changed it to try to get more interest in the movie since it's been ages since the first PiB and since Shrek was a relevant franchise.)

@contribs who have taken language classes beyond the required sequence - what motivated you to do so? Do you actively do things outside of class that allow you to retain your knowledge? Are you planning to find ways to retain the knowledge after you graduate? I'm considering taking upper-level Chinese but I feel like I'd eventually lose the skills unless I got a job that I actively needed to speak Chinese in (which I don't plan to do) so all the time I spent learning would be for naught.
Response from Evan Hansen:
I took a 300-level Portuguese class last semester just for the heck of it. I wanted to learn more about the subject of the class, and it just happened to be taught in Portuguese. For me, unless I end up working with something Brazil-related (which as a pre-med I feel is unlikely), I probably won’t ever need to speak Portuguese professionally, but it’s a nice skill to have for vacations and such. I try to maintain my proficiency by watching movies/reading the news/keeping up with Brazilian pop culture, and I imagine you ought to be able to do the same with Chinese. I haven’t noticed that much attrition in fluency since I was speaking Portuguese immersively, and I don’t think it would take that much time for me to get back into it, e.g. if I moved back to Brazil.
Response from Pichu:
I took upper level Chinese just cuz I really enjoyed taking Chinese at Princeton. I don’t speak Chinese at home so it’s not like that was a reason (although if I did speak at home, i wouldn’t gain as much from taking the classes anyways). And it’s not related to my job or future career in any way either. It would only be useful for when I go back to China occasionally to get around. I just really liked the teachers and the teaching method and it was a good break from my quantitative courses so I took 305/306 after finishing the language req at pib. Maybe John Shade can add his reasons for taking upper level Chinese and I think getting the certificate
