Allah calls Himself An-Nur—The Light, The Illuminating— on one occasion in the Quran. He is the one who is the light and from whom comes all light. An-Nur is the light of the heavens and earth, and His light clarifies and reveals, both physically and spiritually!
The Light, The One who reveals and illuminates
An-Nur comes from the root noon-waw-raa which points to four main meanings. The first main meaning is to give light and illuminate and the second to make visible, reveal,, and clarify. The third main meaning is to be flaming, blazing, and apparent to the senses, and the fourth main meaning to enlighten or give advice.
This root appears 194 times in the Quran in three derived forms.  Examples of these forms are an-naara (the Fire), nuruhum (their light)  and muneerah (illuminating).
Linguistically, nur is used to indicate anything that gives off light, in the form of rays for example, and is that which makes things visible. Referring to Allah ‘azza wa jall, He is the one by whom everything is made visible, whose attribute is light, and He is the One who illuminates (munawwir) and the One who guides (Haadi) the heavens and the earth!
An-Nur Himself says: Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. [Quran, 24:35]
The essence of Light
In the Quran and Sunnah we can find that Allah ‘azza wa jall has a nur (light) related to Him as an attribute of His essence. This is the same as His other attributes, for example sight, knowledge, might, etc. An-Nur says: And the earth will shine with the Light of its Rabb. [Quran, 39:69] This refers to the magnificent moment Allah ‘azza wa jall will come on the Day of Resurrection to judge mankind.
The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam stated about Allah’s attribute of nur: You are the Light of the heavens and the earth.[Al-Bukhaaree] He salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also said the very weighty words: Light is His hijaab (veil), if He uncovers it then the subuhaat (brightness and splendour) of His Face would burn His creation so far as His Sight reaches. [Muslim]
A beautiful comparison
The scholars mentioned the light that is a part of Allah ‘azza wa jall and His attribute and the light given to the creation, both perceived— like from the sun and the moon— and spiritual. In surah An-Nur, ayah 35, Allah ‘azza wa jall describes His Light: The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. [Quran, 24:35]
Ibn al Qayyim rahimahullah explained it as a spiritual light bestowed by Allah ‘azza wa jall upon the heart of His believing slave [Ijtimaa’ al-Ju-yoush al-Islaamiyyah] The niche is compared with the chest of the believer; inside the niche is a glass, of the most crisp and clear kind, and this glass resembles the heart of a believer. It sees the truth by virtue of its clarity and, similar to the olive oil, is the substance of the believing heart;it is from the “tree” of Revelation (that  which Allah ‘azza wa jall revealed in His books). [Ibn al Qayyim’s al-Waabil as-Sayyib] The stronger a believer adheres to the revelation, the stronger the roots in his heart are!
How Can You Live by This Name?
1. Know what to follow for success.
An-Nur says: There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book. [Quran, 5:15] This light is the Prophet Muhammad salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. The first step is to really treat the Quran and Sunah as your guide and deeply realize that only they are your way to receive the spiritual light of An-Nur.  Through them you can see the reality of things and you will learn to clearly distinguish between good and bad.
2. Strive for His light.
Strive for His light by making understanding the Quran a priority in your daily life. Each day at least read one ayah and its meaning and practise it. Learn to understand the original language of the Quran. The light which An-Nur puts in your heart when you submit is faith in Him, knowledge, and love and remembrance of Him. Make the Quran and sunnah priority in your daily life so An-Nur will guide you and bless you with spiritual clarity.
3. Increase your good deeds.
Do many good deeds for the sake of An-Nur so that He will put light on your face in the Hereafter: [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord. [Quran 75:22-23] A beautiful way to increase your worship is to think about your intention consciously throughout the day and re-invent your intention by changing random deeds like cleaning, cooking, working, etc. with the intention of pleasing Allah ‘azza wa jall.
4. Think of the light on the Day of Judgement
The more your heart was responding to the light of the revelation (Quran and sunnah) in this life, the stronger your light will be on that dreadful day! So increase in doing good by seeing these deeds as a reason for light in the darkness of the Hereafter in shaa Allah!
5. Be thankful.
Each day realize that An-Nur has guided you from the darknesesses of disbelief to the light of Islam and thank Him from the bottom of your heart.
5. Ask An-Nur
Use this supplication from the Quran related to light:
‎يقولونربناأتمملنانورناواغفرلناإنكعلىكلشيءقدير
They will say: Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent  [Quran, 66:8]
And this beautiful invocation for when you go to the mosque:
‎“اللَّهُمَّاجْعَلْفِيقَلْبِينُوراً،وَفِيلِسَانِينُوراً،وَفِيسَمْعِينُوراً،وَفِيبَصَرِينُوراً،وَمِنْتَحْتِِينُوراً،وَعَنْيَمِينِينُوراً،وَعَنْشِمَالِينُوراً،وَمِنأَمَامِينُوراً،وَمِنْخَلْفِِينُوراً،وَاجْعَلْفِينَفْسِينُوراً،وَأَعْظِمْلِينُوراً،وَعَظِّمْلِينُوراً،وِاجْعَلْلِينُوراً،وَاجْعَلْنِينُوراً،اللَّهُمَّأَعْطِنِينُوراً،وَاجْعَلْفِيعَصَبِينُوراً،وَفِيلَحْمِينُوراً،وَفِيدَمِينُوراً،وَفِيشَعْرِينُوراً،وَفِيبَشَرِينُوراً
O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light [Al-Bukhaaree]
O Allah, An-Nur, we know that You are Light and all kinds of light come from you. Guide us in following Your revelation, so it can be a source of light for us in this life and the next. Aid us in doing many good deeds so our faces will be shining with light in the Hereafter, light will emerge for us on the siraat so we can witness Your Light in Paradise, ameen!

The Phonology of Qartədšatim has diverged a bit from its earlier Canaanite roots, having lost or greatly reduced its laryngeal consonants. It has however retained a three-way distinction between its voiceless, emphatic, and voiced stops and coronal fricatives. The voiceless stops are aspirated, and, whilst the emphatic stops are still pharyngealised, many speakers treat them simply as tenuis

Amantes das 6 cordas... conheça a história!!!
Se na história da música as memórias são usualmente feitas em nome do primor musical, talento ou músicos encrenqueiros há também o grupo dos injustiçados. Aqueles que foram famosos, mas nunca obtiveram reconhecimento à altura de seu potencial. Roy Buchanan está no hall da fama dos menos conhecidos. O que é curioso, pois a sua história tem todos os elementos de mitos da música. Ele criou e desenvolveu estilo e técnica própria, serviu de exemplo para rockstars que vieram depois de seu legado, deu um nome a sua guitarra e ainda teve uma morte obscura, ou seja, tudo aquilo que o manual de “como se tornar uma lenda da música” exige.
Seu pai era um pastor evangélico e foi por conta disso que ele teve contato com os ricos elementos da música negra. O gospel ressoava nos tímpanos do pequeno Leroy, que quando tinha cerca de cinco anos e brincava com seu violão de aço. Para ele, ter começado a ouvir música dentro do ambiente religioso foi marcante no que diz respeito ao desenvolver de sua personalidade musical. É possível comparar sua maneira de tocar como a de um pastor pregar. O som começa baixo e calmo e conforme o tempo passa o volume aumenta, a velocidade cresce e quem está ouvindo entra em clímax.
Aos nove, quando ganhou de seus pais uma Rickenbacker vermelha, começou a ter aulas com a Sra. Clara Louese. Há uma história curiosa sobre os três anos que Roy tomou aulas com ela. Sua professora ficou sabendo de uma notícia que a fez chorar: Buchanan não sabia ler partitura musical. O garoto tocava tudo de ouvido! Talvez esse começo um pouco torto do ponto de vista técnico, fez com que ele desenvolvesse o feeling de maneira incrível.
Simplicidade foi uma característica do guitarrista, que mais tarde quando muito, usava um digital delay. Costumava plugar sua ‘Nancy’ – uma Telecaster amarela de 1953, direto no amplificador Fender com o ganho no 10´. Com sua técnica e peculiaridade pode-se dizer que ele deu continuidade ao uso da Telecaster no mundo do blues.
Buchanan era com certeza músico dos palcos. Seu desejo era apenas de compartilhar suas catarses criativas com seus espectadores. Sempre teve aversão a ser o centro das atenções, pois preferia passar tempo com sua família e amigos. Por esse motivo, são escassas as informações sobre sua vida pessoal. Em entrevistas, ele mesmo afirmava que o showbizz o assustava.
Aos doze anos ele já era o prodígio instrumentista de uma banda chamada The Waw Keen Valley Boys, na época em que ainda morava em San Joaquin Valley, na Califórnia - apesar de ter nascido em Ozark, Alabama. As coisas começaram a mudar quando Buchanan foi para a cidade grande. Aos 16 anos se mudava para Los Angeles, e lá formaria uma banda com o futuro baterista do Jefferson Airplane - Spencer Dryden, chamada Heartbeats. Mas as coisas não foram muito longe com sua nova banda. Durante uma turnê ao sul da Califórnia, eles foram abandonados pelo seu empresário e sem recursos para poder seguir em frente, encerraram a turnê. Sem problemas.
A estrada é a melhor companheira de um guitarrista de blues. Então, Buchanan decidiu que não era o momento de voltar para LA e rumou para Tulsa. Foi a melhor coisa que poderia ter feito.
Em Tulsa, Buchanan conseguiu um emprego como guitarrista da Oklahoma Bandstand. Havia um show marcado com o “tornado humano” Dale Hawkins – que na época estourava com sua composição “Susie Q” (Após alguns anos Buchanan revelou que na verdade a música era originalmente de Howlin´Wolf e que Hawkins havia apenas dado uma maquiada na versão original). Hawkins sempre foi reconhecido por escolher muito bem seus músicos, especialmente os guitarristas. Já tinha tocado com Scotty Moore, Sonny Jones, Carl Adams entre outros. Não era difícil perceber que o jovem Buchanan estava no lugar certo fazendo o que tinha talento para fazer. Depois desse show é que começou a carreira de rock and roll de Buchanan, pois agora – em uma época em que Elvis estourava as gargantas das menininhas e James Dean estava vivo – ele tocava com um músico do mainstream. Dale Hawkins contratara o garoto.
Após acompanhá-lo por um certo tempo na estrada, chegava a hora de ir para o estúdio. E foi via Chess Records que eles gravaram um compacto – naquela época era muito comum músicos gravarem discos com apenas duas músicas, uma de cada lado. Eles lançaram uma versão de “My Babe” de Willie Dixon. Passaram os próximos dois anos em turnê pelos Estados Unidos. Esse tempo foi uma grande escola para Buchanan, que não só se tornava um músico de rock, mas aprendeu a beber e usar drogas. Eles tinham uma boa relação, como afirma Buchanan: “Eu era um dos poucos que agüentava e sabia lidar com Hawkins, pelo menos espiritualmente. Ele era perfecionista, se algo saía errado nós repassávamos quantas vezes fosse necessário”.
Em Outubro de 1960 em Washington, após um show, uma jovem sorridente e com olhar de admiração disse a Buchanan que adorava o jeito que ele tocava sua Telecaster. Um ano depois ele se casaria com essa garota chamada Judy Owens. Nessa época, ele já começava a despontar como o branco que melhor tocava blues nos EUA. E isso arrancou elogios de gente carrancuda e importantíssima na história da música, como Seymour Duncan ou Les Paul que tinha um discurso interessante sobre Roy: “Eu nunca havia ouvido algo como o que Buchanan fazia na época e isso despertou muito interesse em mim. Por exemplo, ele não tocava um arpejo do jeito que você aprende com o seu professor. Ele tinha sua própria maneira de fazer as coisas, tudo sempre de um jeito diferente. Não importava se palhetava ou se tocava com os dedos, ele era com certeza um guitarrista incomum”.
Apesar de ser conhecido dentro do meio musical, ele nunca havia assinado um hit que fosse para as paradas de sucesso. E foi por volta de 1962, quando o baterista Bobby Gregg gravou e autocreditou-se pela música “The Jam”, que Buchanan tomava o primeiro soco na cara da indústria cultural, pois a música tinha riffs compostos por ele em vários trechos e ela foi para o topo das paradas de R&B.
Enquanto Roy ficava louco com o uso de pílulas e barbitúricos, digerindo sua primeira frustação, nascia seu primeiro filho. Como conseqüência desse acontecimento ele se mudou para Mt. Rainier, Maryland e foi morar com sua sogra. Pelos próximos anos ele passaria seu tempo tocando com bandas locais, nos arredores de Washington uma vez que muitos músicos americanos estavam sendo menosprezados por conta da invasão britânica. The Who, Cream, Beatles eram preferência. E novamente Roy encarava outro momento de frustração, quando viu um pedal de wah wah, em 1968 num show de Hendrix no hotel Hilton de Washington que era capaz de produzir um som já patenteado pelo músico, mas ao simples alcance de uma pisada e com melhoras técnicas referentes à potencia. O wah wah Buchaniano era feito pela manipulação do knob de tonalidade de sua Telecaster, desde o começo da década de 50.
E nesta época obscura Buchanan já tinha seis filhos e trabalhava de dia como barbeiro para poder contribuir com o orçamento de casa. Um dia um cliente entrou na barbearia empunhando uma Fender Telecaster 53´ amarela. Buchanan sentiu que aquela guitarra lhe pertencia. Interrompeu o seu trabalho e foi perguntar para o cliente onde ele havia conseguido a guitarra e se por acaso ele aceitaria trocá-la, prometendo assim, conseguir a guitarra mais bela que já tinha visto para trocar pela Tele amarela – que seria batizada de ‘Nancy’ seu futuro xodó. Conseguiu com um amigo uma Telecaster roxa e trocou de instrumento. Por esse período – em Julho de 69 - o guitarrista Brian Jones dos Rolling Stones havia morrido e eles procuravam por um substituto. Roy foi convidado e recusou o convite, alegando que não gostaria de entrar em turnê com uma banda que possuía uma ‘imagem’ diferente da que ele passava. Contudo, passado algum tempo da recusa ele alegou à imprensa que aprender o repertório dos Stones seria muito difícil.
Em 1970 o canal de televisão de Washington WNET, produziu um documentário sobre o ‘Melhor Guitarrista Desconhecido do Mundo’. Produzido por John Adams, seu conteúdo estava recheado de depoimentos sinceros de Buchanan, carregados com o seu ranço pela indústria de música. “Eu provavelmente nunca me tornei famoso porque eu não me importo se sou ou não famoso. A única coisa que sempre quis foi aprender a tocar guitarra de maneira autodidata. Você é que determina suas metas para o sucesso. E quando as alcança não significa necessariamente que você será uma grande estrela e encherá os bolsos de dinheiro. Você sentirá no seu coração se é bem sucedido ou não”. Nesses tempos ele costumava tocar de costas para o público, com medo que alguém fosse roubar seu estilo de tocar guitarra.
Apesar de tocar com várias bandas, Buchanan tinha sua banda fixa chamada The Snakestretchers. E alegando esse motivo recusou mais um ótimo convite, feito desta vez por Eric Clapton, para integrar o Derek And The Dominoes. E em 1972 ele lança "Buck & The Snake Stretchers". Com a boa repercussão e aparições na televisão e no Washington Post, ele consegui um contrato para três discos com a Polydor. Lançava então, em julho de 72, seu primeiro disco solo que tinha apenas o seu nome na capa, sem qualquer título. Três meses depois já tinha gravado todo o material para o segundo disco. Parecia que Buchanan já estava cansado de tocar em pequenos bares, e finalmente, o caminho da fama parecia estar sendo trilhado.
Seu segundo trabalho foi lançado no começo de 1973, com o título nada original de "Second Album". Se o título não tem personalidade o mesmo não podemos dizer sobre as músicas que são conduzidas pelo timbre agudo e rasgante de Buchanan. Nesse disco o ‘pinch harmonic’ presenteia nossos ouvidos e ao longo das músicas podemos perceber como sua técnica pessoal está presente, especialmente nos solos. O ‘pinch harmonic’ era uma forma de palhetar usando uma palheta, a ponta do dedão e o polegar ao mesmo tempo, suprimindo parcialmente o soar da nota, fazendo com que a guitarra “grite”. Atualmente o guitarrista mais conhecido por tocar com essa técnica é Zakk Wylde.
Seu terceiro disco de 1973 intitulado “That´s what I´m Here For”, obteve baixas vendagens e críticas negativas. Mas isso não impediu que o guitarrista fizesse uma turnê mesmo com as poucas expectativas dos executivos da Polydor. Impressionante é a arrogância de Buchanan, pois durante a gravação desse disco ele jogou em um triturador de lixo mais uma boa oportunidade para sua carreira. No mesmo estúdio onde foram realizadas as gravações de seu terceiro álbum, Jonh Lennon estava fazendo a mixagem de seu disco “Mind Games” e se ofereceu para fazer algum tipo de participação especial, caso o músico desejasse, pois Lennon admirava o estilo marcante de Buchanan. Infelizmente, Roy dispensou o mitológico ex-beatle.Nos anos seguintes ainda pela Polydor ele lançou um disco ao vivo chamado "Live Stock". Era o último disco por essa gravadora.
O lendário Ahmet Ertegun, já queria que Buchanan integrasse o cast da Atlantic desde quando vira o guitarrista tocar no Carnegie Hall em 1972, e recebendo um adiantamento financeiro foi para o estúdio gravar a “Street Called Straight” – algo como “Uma rua chamada correta” – em alusão a sua tentativa de manter-se sóbrio e longe de drogas.
O primeiro disco via Atlantic, "Loading Zone", de 77, foi produzido pelo baixista de fusion Stanley Clarke e nele está a clássica "Green Onions" com um dueto com o Booker T. & the MG´s. A faixa não foi gravada como soa. Stanley acelerou as partes de Buchanan sem avisá-lo, para dar nova textura à faixa e isso alimentou atritos entre os dois. Nesse ano ele também lançou um disco ao vivo, gravado no Japão.
As coisas não começaram muito bem em 1978. O próximo disco, “You´re Not Alone” não foi feito com empolgação. Buchanan quase sempre chegava atrasado e sem nada ou com idéias muito básicas para suas músicas. No final tudo acabou ficando jogado no colo de Stanley Clarke, que trabalhava mais nas faixas do que o próprio Buchanan. Como resultado, ele saiu da gravadora.
Passou os próximos dois anos sem lançar nenhum disco, fazendo pequenas turnês como sideman e tocando em bares. Em uma tentativa de se libertar de qualquer tipo de problema, seja com produtores ou com a própria gravadora – que costuma cobrá-lo por não ser um músico que esvaziava as prateleiras, em 1980 ele resolveu autoproduzir-se no disco “My Babe”, com o intuito de proteger-se de qualquer problema que pudesse surgir. O disco foi distribuído pela independente Waterhouse Records.
Curioso é Buchanan decidir em 1981 que não gravaria mais nenhum disco, pois sentía-se pressionado por grandes gravadoras que sempre tentaram alisar sua música para torná-la mais abrangente ao público geral. Mesmo depois de ser seu próprio produtor, parecia sentir uma pressão interna. Seja por ser um músico muito mais famoso entre os músicos, ou por não conseguir se livrar das drogas.
Entretanto surgiu uma saída para Buchanan. A gravadora de blues Alligator parecia ser uma casa perfeita, pois não era nem muito grande – assim como Roy – mas estava longe de ser insignificante. O resultado de um bluesman em uma gravadora segmentada foi o “When a Guitar Plays the Blues” de 1985. A liberdade fez com que Roy voasse e o disco passou cerca de 13 semanas na Billboard. Como resultado excursionou pela Austrália, Estados Unidos e Europa.
Nos anos que seguiram lançou mais dois discos pela Alligator. “Dancing on the Edge”(86) e “Hot Wires” (87). Tudo parecia começar a dar certo, pois Roy trabalhava com liberdade, fazia turnês e sua popularidade crescia. Ele pensava na época em fazer um disco todo instrumental. Mas no dia 14 de Agosto de 1988 as coisas mudariam novamente...
Buchanan saiu para comprar cigarros e parou em um bar local para beber. Voltou para casa absolutamente embriagado e agressivo. Judy sua mulher, assustada com o estado do marido chamou a polícia. Buchanan pegou o telefone, arremessou-o no parede e saiu para a rua. Após uma busca no bairro os policiais o encontraram vagando e o prenderam, alegando intoxicação por drogas. O sherife Carl Peed o acomodou na cela R-45 e deu continuidade ao seu trabalho. A história diz que um dos guardas que estava de plantão encontrou o músico pendurado pelo pescoço por sua camiseta. Até hoje não se sabe se ele foi violentado ou se realmente se matou. O mistério sobre sua morte permanece, pois apesar das dificuldades que enfrentou, ele não tinha motivos suficientes para se matar.
No final das contas, o guitarrista que preferia alcançar as notas desejadas com bends, que soava pegando fogo com seus harmônicos e que influenciou Jeff Beck, John Lennon e Eric Clapton teve uma carreira que nunca – injustamente – ressoou aos ouvidos de todos.

One thing I forgot to mention: before numbers symbols like 1,2,3 were invented in India, what ancient people used to do was just use letters. While the Romans eventually invented a convoluted system of IXVCDM most near-eastern cultures just used their alphabet in its order to represent numbers. A was one, B was two, and so on. At the tenth letter, however, instead of giving weird numbers like 17 their own whole letter, they started counting by 10s, and at the 19th letter (because the tenth letter was the first tens letter, so the eleventh would be the second and so on), by hundreds, since people were more likely to go “about 20″ than “exactly 17″ or whatever. This made the alphabet order important, however, since mixing it up between two places would get different numbers of items. A:
A depicted an ox head, ‘alep in Phoenician. The Egyptian word was k3w, pronounced something like “karru”. But the phoenician word began with a sound called a “glottal stop”. In English it’s found in the middle of “uh-oh”, and wasn’t merely a break in these languages, but a full fledged consonant. But because of its weakness, this was the letter used most often as a “mother of reading” as I explained in the last post. Since the “ee” sound was associated with the /j/-sound, and since the “oo” sound was associated with the /w/-sound, ‘alep came to be associated with the “ah” sound by default. And so while ‘aleph in Hebrew or ‘alif in Arabic are still “mothers of reading”, when the Greeks borrowed the letter for themselves and their very different from Semitic language, they used it for the /a/ sound. The Egyptians used a vulture for this sound in their own language. Aleph came to be pronounced Alpha by the Greeks. Most A’s have the value 1. B: B originally comes from the floor plan of a house - beyt’. You would have an opening for a door as well, and through cursive writing eventually came to have a sort of P shape (or Pluto shape), before the bottom tail curved closed too, giving B. Beyt became Beta. Most B’s have the value 2. Egyptian used a symbol of a foot and leg for /b/. C, G: C was originally a throwing stick, gaml. A throwing stick being basically what a boomerang is - you’d throw it at an animal you want to stun. Later on, after Mesopotamian traders introduced the Camel from East Asia to the Middle East, people began interpreting the word as giml, or camel. Whence Greek Gamma. The Greek alphabet wasn’t passed directly from the Greeks to the ancient Romans. First the Greeks had colonies in Italy, and traded with the Etruscans, who spoke a language quite unlike both Greek and Latin and unlike Arabic or Egyptian. And the Etruscan language seemed to lack voiced stops, like B D G, a profile kind of like Mandarin today, where B D G are really p t k, and P T K are very harsh, aspirated p’, t’, k’. The Etruscans ended up using C, K, and Q almost interchangably and for both the /g/ and /k/ sounds; just for aesthetic reasons, C came before E and I, K before A, and Q before O and V (more on that in a bit). But Latin needed both /g/ and /k/ letters, and later on a teacher invented G, with a little Greek Gamma (not as curved) on it, whence G. But the old practice was retained in some abbreviations: GAIVS was C. As for G’s placement, at this time, because Latin didn’t really have a /z/ sound of its own, Z wasn’t being used except as a number. So the Romans had this gap of sorts in Z’s original place, and put G there instead. When they reintroduced Z, they added it at the end. This is why G has the value of 3 in most languages, instead of 7 or something. Egyptian used a jar with food inside as their symbol for /g/.
D:
D was probably originally a kind of fish, being something like digg, and was drawn kind of like a Jesus fish. Later on, the shape kind of simplified, and people started calling it dalet, because it looked to them like a door. This became delta in Greek; Latin’s D is Greek’s delta but round, like C is gamma but round. Most D’s have a value of 4. Egyptian might not have had an actual /d/ in their language, but the closest equivalent sound was written with a hand.
E:
E was a complicated sign in Egyptian used to mark words of jubilation or celebration, and was a depiction of a man with his arms over his head. Jubilation was something like hili in Phoenician, and by then the symbol was already abstract and a bunch of lines connected to other lines. So it was reinterpreted as he, and made the simple /h/ sound like in English hey. At one point, Greek didn’t have /h/-sounds at all. So, like Aleph, it was repurposed, this time for the vowel beside it, e. Later, the “ah”-”ee” sound, /ai/, like English I or eye, became an “eh” sound, like in the French words maison or lait. And this was the same as the sound E made, so the Greeks started calling E “simple E” or E-psilon to distinguish it from AI. Most E’s have the value 5. The Egyptian /h/ sound was written with an angular spiral, a stand in related to the floor plan of beyt’, maybe meaning courtyard or reed shelter.
F, U, V, W, Y:
Y was originally a drawing a hook, called waw in Phoenician, and made the /w/ sound. As a semivowel, Y was relatively unstable, and sometimes there were situations where the consonant /w/, without any vowels beside it, would become the “oo” sound between other consonants. This is the first “split”: Greek took the F-shaped varient for its /w/ sound, and the Y-shaped variant for its /u/ sound.
The /w/ sound eventually disappeared in Greek, but not before they started trading with the Etruscans, who had kind of weird language. At the time, Greek’s phi was still more of a p-sound than an f-sound as well. Since Etruscan didn’t really have phonetic voicing, the /v/ and /f/ sounds were interchangible. And /w/ likes to become v, which is why languages like German and Polish use it as such. So Etruscan made a huge leap, using F for /f/ instead of /w/. And passed it on to the Romans. Most W’s have a value of 6 because of this convolution.
Y had been written in the shape of V in Etruscan, although they weren’t thought of as separate letters any more than we think of the a that looks like an o and the a that looks like a 2 as separate letters. This form was passed into Latin. And in Classical Latin, V always made the /u/ or /w/ sounds.
Greek’s OY then did a similar thing as its AI, fusing together into a different sound. So Y was called Y-psilon to show it as a simpler, shorter, and different from OY. At the same time, Greek’s Y came to be pronounced like French’s u, or German’s ü, (or Finnish’s y) basically an “ee” sound while making a kissy face. Because of this, even though they were just variants of the same letter, Latin reborrowed Y to contrast with V, which made them separate letters. And dropping the kissy face on “ee” means y was just pronounced “ee”, the same as I, which is why Y and I work pretty much the same way in English.
Now, in Latin, where /u/ sounds were /u/ sounds and where /w/ sounds were /w/ sounds was pretty predictable. Since they were similar, there was no reason to use anything but V for both of them. Even when Latin’s /w/ became /v/ in most daughter languages, where that was was still predictable, and so there was no need for a separate /u/ and /w/. But around the time of the reformation, German started getting written a lot more. And German’s (then) /w/ and /u/ sounds weren’t always predictable. So they had this convention of writing /w/ later /v/ as VV and /u/ as V. And this convention spread to Polish.
But in England, with all their French words dragging in /v/, they had /w/, /v/, and /u/, and all in unpredictable places compared to Latin; they weren’t complementary. There was already a convention to write V like v at the beginning of words and like u in the middle, so the English ended up splitting V and U into different letters. This post-dates the US, believe it or not: the Declaration of Independence still used u/v as variants of each other. Because of how late this was, not all languages using the Latin alphabet even recognized W or U as separate letters going into the 20th century.

The Egyptian equivalents were a quail chick for /w/, which could be a mother of reading as well, a horned viper for /f/, and either didn’t have or didn’t need symbols for /u/, /v/, and /y/. That said, using Y as /j/-sound like yeah/jah, Egyptians did a complicated thing I’ll get to when I talk about I and J.

Eleventh story about Skrillex!
Heyy! I wrote that part in like half an hour because I was soooooo excited to write a part twoooo. Omg! They are finally a couple, yesssssss!
BOYFRIEND AND GIRLFRIEND
Part two:
As you entered the house, you held Sonny's hand loosely but at the same time your fingers were interwieved. He smiled at your hand and kissed it slightly.
The whole crew were sitting on the sofa and having a small convo. "Heyy, girl!" Ambre jumped up and run over to you to give you a big ass hug.  "Hey, how are you? I haven't seen you in so long time!" You asked and sit yourself on a sofa beside the girls, Sonny went to talk to the boys about some upcoming concerts. "Working on some new music, been good" She smiled. "I heard you and Thomas went to a Spain, how was it?"  She blushed and smiled. "Girl! We have better things to talk about. We saw you and Sonny kissing, what's happening?" Mia poked you from the side and  you blush. "Oh my days, girl! You are blushing!" Both girls were now awwing. "He asked me to be his girlfriend" you were so happy. "Yesssss!" Now the three of you were jumping and clapping your hands. "He gave me a bracelet" they awwed harder. " Enough of me and Sonny, tell us about Spain, what did you do?" You asked Mia. "It was amazing, got to see some cool stuff and me and Sonny went on a next level" she was pretty much mumbling the last part. "Oooh, you two are soo cute but nasty" the three of you started laughing.
"So you and Sonny are now a couple" Thomas said with a surprised tone as we put chips in the bowls. "You sound surpised, didn't expect that?" You chuckle a lil bit. "No actually we all have been waiting for this to happen for a long time. Now it finally did" you smile to yourself. "I talked to Sonny earlier and he said that you are the most prettiest girl he has ever seen and you have no idea how nervous he was when he texted you to come here" Thomas smiles and you both went back to the living room, where you sit besides Sonny who gives you a little kiss on the temple. "Anyone wanna watch a movie?" Sonny asks. "Yes!" "Yeaah!" "Only If I can choose a movie!" Your best friend ran to the CD section, leaving all of us laughing and shaling our heads. You love my best friend. "Can't believe I like this girl" Dillon says with a quiet voice but at the same time pretty loud, he made sure that Ambre heard that. Thomas let out a funny laugh, that was hillarious. "Heyyy! I Heard that!" Both of them chuckled and she cuddled herself into Dillon's side.
We started to watch "Conjuring" You tryed to get comfortable so you cuddled into Sonny's side. Sonny kissed your hair. Your head was resting on Sonny's shoulder and he put his head on top of yours. His hands were on your waist, pulling you closer to him.
When you finished your movie marathon it was three in the morning. "Hey it's pretty late, i think we should get going" Thomas said tiredly. He, Ambre and Mia stood up and wawed everyone goodbye. "I think we're gonna go too" you and your best friend both stood up but a warm hand stopped you. Millie, stay here. Today is saturday so we don't have school" you look at you best friend who is nodding slightly. You smiled at Sonny and nodded."Y/B/F/N, you can take my car keys" your best friend was trying to take the keys and thank you but Dillon stopped her. "You should stay here too, it's late and I don't want you to drive this late" "but I have a appointment tomorrow" "i can drove you there" your best friend finnally gave up and was okay with us staying here tonight. "Wanna go to sleep?" You nod and Sonny took your hand before wishing everyone good night.
Sonny handed you one of his shirts and you put it on. Sonny was now only wearing some shorts and no shirt, he was hella sexy that way.  As you laid yourself on Sonny's bed, Sonny quickly pulled you besides him and he snuggled his face into your hair. "Goodnight, love" "goodnight, Sonny

Chapter Five: Fuck You
The Present.
“How much do you remember?” Remus nagged the next morning as Patton bustled around his room getting dressed.
“I wasn’t black out drunk!” Patton retaliated, “I remember everything.” Patton wasn’t, and he’ll say it again, not a lightweight. No. Not that the thought offended him in any way shape or form. “I mean, it’s fuzzy, but still,” he mumbled into his shirt as he pulled it off over his head.
“So… Logan knows and now probably the others…” Remus clutched the rumpled bed sheets, his eyes stretched wide to accommodate all his stress. Waiting for the floorboards to open their jaws and swallow him, chew and spit him out again, he stared at it expectantly. He’d rather bleed to death from splintery teeth than deal with this right now, and he wouldn’t have to if he resembled mashed potatoes. This fucking stress. This guilt.
“I’m over thirty years old! It’s normal, having a drink with a friend!” Patton dismissed with a wave of his hand, swatting Remus’s very real, very valid concerns away. Not entirely unusual. That is, if they were talking about something as trivial as why Mother Nature created hyenas the way she did. Poor things, childbirth was already messy enough.
“They shouldn’t be so shocked. Now where’s my—” Patton whisked around the room looking for a change of clothes, and Jesus, he needed to clean his room. He found his one clean polo wedged behind his wardrobe. Remus thought he was entirely too concerned about clothes when everything had been fundamentally fucked up yesterday. Clothes were overrated, anyway.
“Why did you…?” Remus couldn’t help but ask. Trying to make sense of things was a new hobby of his. He was still an amateur. Patton pulled his fresh polo on, and Remus tried to ask again hoping he’d succeed with one less distraction.
“Why did you admit we’re friends to Logan?”
Patton just looked at him like he was crazy. Crazier than he thought. “Because we are? I had just been talking about how I need to stop pretending we're not friends. Do you really think I’d go back on my word so quickly?” He said incredulously. “Hey, I think I left my hoodie under the bed again. Could you pass it?”
Remus did retrieve the garment from beneath the bed, checking there were no cobwebs or spiders on it. Then he held it, frozen. Remus rivalled Virgil when it came to thinking of worst case scenarios, only Remus wasn’t normally scared by them. Now… Remus knew he’d someday ruin everything for Patton. Ruin it like he ruins everything. That’s what happens when you’re the embodiment of bad ideas. It’s not fun anymore when he’s ruining something, someone, he actually cares about.
He just wanted Patton to be happy…
Hands rested on his shoulders, comforting and solid. “Look at me,” Patton hushed. Remus did.
Since when did his eyes twinkle like that?
“I don’t regret it, Remus,” Patton said sternly. “I can’t afford to spend every sober moment regretting everything.” Patton smiled. “I want good memories, however few.” His eyes crinkled in that simple, rare way you’d hope to see well worn into his skin one day. That private smile was for Remus.
Patton gently took the hoodie and wrapped it around his shoulders like a cape. “I’m gonna need some tequila for this.”
Oh god.

Now how was Patton supposed to break the news? He chickened out at breakfast, and he chickened out at lunch, now it was dinner. There was chicken on the table and no room for more than one. God, it felt like coming out of the closet all over again. Think, what would Remus do?
“I’m not a virgin,” Patton blurted.
Oh yes, very subtle.
Cutlery clattered and clanged combined with collective choked coughing.
That didn’t quite come across how he had wanted it to. Perhaps Patton was drunker than he thought and he didn’t need that extra liquid courage right before dinner after all. He had been aiming for tipsy, like usual, when he had taken a few shots this morning.
(He didn’t know how to get through a whole day entirely sober anymore. Wake up, get dressed, have a couple shots, brush your teeth, have breakfast— it was routine. When sober, he hardly had the energy to maintain his act, but when tipsy, he was just delirious enough for his insanity to come across as jovial joy.
Yes, that did mean Patton was living with a constant hangover.
And no, he could not find the strength to care.)
Perhaps he had overshot it with his nerves making him lose count.
All well, it served the same purpose.
Last time, anyway, Patton had just blurted that he thought guys were attractive, and it turned out fine. (Which went something along the lines of:
“Boys are hot.”
“Duh.”
“They are indeed glorious creatures.”
“I can confirm that that is a factual statement.”)
Why should it work any different this time?
Wait, why is no one saying anything?
Patton looked around at his fellow sides, and they all looked like they saw a creepy crawly death dealer sitting comfortably on his head.
“Did you hear me?”
As their brains caught up, Virgil and Roman both spluttered, “What?!” There was another brief silence before the information caught up to Logan, and he too followed with a small, “What?”
Bewildered, Virgil and Roman’s heads snapped around at Logan. “You mean— you didn’t…?”
“No,” Logan said, eyebrows furrowed. “I thought I dreamt what I saw yesterday,” Logan eventually said. All of the colour was drained from him. “Yeah, I know, so surprising how articulate I can be when I’m drunk,” Patton half joked defensively.
“Do you know what virgin even means, Patton?” Roman asked slowly, hoping this was one of Patton’s hilarious misunderstandings. Patton sighed. “It means someone who hasn’t had sex before. And I have. So I’m not,” he said, beginning to curl in on himself. He felt trapped like an insect enveloped in a water droplet, not strong enough to break the surface tension.
“With you always expecting me to be honest I wouldn’t have thought you’d be so surprised when I actually am,” Patton observed bitterly. Something about the mention of truthfulness struck a nerve in Virgil, resulting in a false epiphany. “Deceit?” Virgil said sceptically. The glare pressing on Patton made him feel like he nearly lost his footing despite not moving an inch.
“Wha— no, I'm not Janus!” Patton said incredulously. “Not that being Janus is a bad thing,” he added under his breath. Patton wouldn’t be offended to be compared to Janus under normal circumstances. However in this situation, he was put off by the negative connotations Virgil was associating with Janus.
“That sounds like something Deceit would say,” Roman mused.
“Oh, you want proof? Fine! Janus!” Patton summoned. A very discombobulated Janus appeared, much to the others’ surprise. “I know exactly what’s going on,” he lied.
“You are Janus, I am Patton, correct?” Patton snapped. “...No?” Janus said, utterly confused. Slightly scared too.
“See?” Patton pleaded. Meanwhile, Janus glanced around at everyone else’s faces screwed up in confusion and some other indecipherable glob of emotions Janus deemed safe to assume as anger. “Jesus, good luck,” he muttered to Patton, and he promptly sank out.
“We just never thought— you always were so pure—”
“Because that’s what was expected from me!” Patton heaved a breath, pushing back his tears. “I committed adultery! There! I said it— and no, I don’t mean adulthood,” he announced. Those words felt like screaming in a claustrophobic space. Stretching, stuffed into a suitcase, and feeling the unforgiving, unrelenting walls. It felt like breathing in the vacuum of space.
“I knew as soon as I broke that perfect, innocent image of me you have, you wouldn’t react well. And guess what? You’re acting exactly like I expected you to!” He screamed. With another sharp, trembly breath, he vented all his frustrations out to people other than Remus for the first time.
He lost it.
“You’ve always treated me like a fucking child even though I’m the oldest. Telling me to shut up and let the adults talk, and this is a grown up conversation, or oh, you wouldn’t get it Patton even. Always sheltering, patronising me as if I’m not over thirty fucking years old,” a lump formed in his throat. “I’m Thomas’s heart. Where do you think his feelings of lust come from?!” Miserable strings of choked back words wound up like a ball of yarn into an incomprehensible howl that tumbled out of Patton.
“When I learnt what repression means, it sounded like something that perhaps wasn’t the best thing for me to keep doing, an-and I thought you’d want me to stop. That you’d be happy for me if I did,” he whimpered.
“W-we did! We are!” Roman quickly jumped in. “It’s just… just not— you… um, listen Padre, uh we,” he faltered. Looking to Logan for guidance, they just found him lost in his head, eyebrows scrunched, grimacing.
“Hold on, if it wasn’t us then it had to have been a dark side,” Virgil finally realised. Roman gasped, and Logan grimaced harder.
“I’m also an alcoholic?” Patton said in an attempt to quickly distract. It distracted them alright, only their reactions were just as bad or worse. It sent them all into a senseless squabble.
“So there was no consent then?” Virgil spoke up, mildly horrified.
What the fuck did he just hear?
Jaw slacked, breath fumbling, all Patton could hear for a moment was his thudding heart before a feeble, “Of course there was,” escaped him. “I can think for myself I-I-I’m not a child I…” And he looked like he'd just been stabbed, they saw. Between his ribs, the knife twisted, locking the blade in and exuding pressure. Because no, they’re not letting his blood spill. Can’t have carpet stains now, can they?
“He must have been manipulating you. Making you valuable with— with drinking and taking advantage of you,” Virgil said, seeming almost concerned for him. “He’s a dark side, he can’t genuinely care about you. It’s the only explanation,” Roman agreed rather bluntly.
His ears must be broken.
Patton’s eyes glistened. “How could you say that?” The watery wimper scraped his throat. “He’s my friend.” Patton wouldn’t let a tear fall; he refused. Only his true friends were allowed to see him that valuable.
“This— this isn’t— please just listen, please! I just wanted to be more honest with you all, an-and I was hoping yo-you’d accept our friendship…” Patton finished lamely.
“He is a dark side, Patton,” they said. “We are your friends,” they said. “We are the ones who really care about you,” they said. Lying was wrong, they had said. Hypocrites.
Mouth helplessly clamped shut, his thoughts ricketed around his skull like a brick in a washing machine. He wouldn’t have had to resort to alcoholism if they hadn’t made him bottle his feelings. Remus would never hurt him, he’s a good friend! Patton has been by his side when Remus was so fucking high, he didn’t even recognise him, and not for one moment did he even consider hurting him in any way! Remus cares. Maybe this whole thing was one big mistake. Patton always belonged with the others, not Virgil. And if Virgil had already made the switch over, then it was his turn. Patton had thought, hey, maybe I’m wrong. They’re my friends; they love me. But he was wrong. Stupid, nieve Patton being wrong, who knew.
Remus wouldn’t treat him like this.
Reverting to his last resort, Patton pleaded, “How can Thomas love himself if he can’t accept himself? If you can’t accept us?”
Completely unmoved, they held up their hands to address him as a scared, dumb animal. Their voice tweaked into a tone used for gently scorning a toddler, “It’s okay, Patton. It’s not your fault he’s manipulated you. We can help. He doesn’t have to use you anymore, we can do this together—”
“F-fuck you. Fuck. You. Bastards.”
As he sunk down, Patton called back one last thing, “By the way, Roman.
I fucked your brother.”

Why? Why, why, why, why, why— It’s all Logan could think the whole time. It just didn’t compute, no matter how valiantly he tried to understand. Why why why why why?!

49 Remember the word to Your servant, Upon which You have caused me to hope. 50 This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life. 51 The proud have me in great derision, Yet I do not turn aside from Your law. 52 I remembered Your judgments of old, O Lord, And have comforted myself. 53 Indignation has taken hold of me Because of the wicked, who forsake Your law. 54 Your statutes have been my songs In the house of my pilgrimage. 55 I remember Your name in the night, O Lord, And I keep Your law. 56 This has become mine, Because I kept Your precepts.
