Unit Teambuilding - Lodge Volkner

Okay, it was cute to draw on last year's options when you did Jasmine for winter, but now it's not funny anymore. This could've been Sabrina. Or Clair. Or Wallace. Or literally anyone else.

General Overview Electric Tech, in a month where SST Red reruns. GG WP. But it wasn't enough to be a stupid role at a stupid time, Volkner had to be downright bad. Discharge is not great for DPS, due to the beneficial condition and split DPS. But his sync multiplier is reduced evasion, something he does only one point at a time while attacking. He gets some evasion play, but it's hardly worthwhile, suffering the same +1 per attack issue and having no defensive backbone to fall back on. His multipliers for sync are also all on-type. It's Double Down all the way down, and that's worse than most, dude. I can't say I respect him. I think Hau's just better. But I guess he does have merit as a Gauntlet ally, thanks to Unfortuitous and a 60% paralysis rate. There are worse outcomes.

EX and Move Level? He's Tech, which is at least not support, so you might have candy for it. It's not the worst investment you can make. EX is a bit harder. Personally I think if you're going to invest in an EX special Electric rat, who is also free, Hau is right there. Volkner's condition is too punishing to make excellent use of.

Team 1: Lodge Volkner, NC Blue/SS Brendan, Eevee Kris/Katherine This is like the only team I can conceive of that gets what Volkner needs. NC Blue's existence is a boon, giving Volkner all the power he wants in one move. Eevee Kris is an odd one, in that she has similar AoE spam but lowers evasion per attack for Volkner's nuke, but also just nuke with her. Katherine is the better debuffer if you're aiming for that. SS Brendan is an alternative to Blue, giving comparable buffs overall.

Team 2: Lodge Volkner, Hop, Darach The other approach to Volkner is using the evasion debuffing to facilitate another partner's needs. In this case, Darach's own sync nuke. Darach can debuff evasion, but it's slower going than you'd like, while Volkner supplies something consistent. But you may be thinking hey, isn't Katherine better for this, hitting -2 AoE per attack and also having Charm for Darach's own Pecking Order? ......yep!

Final Thoughts I do not respect Volkner. I am not about to start.

Overview of Realism: In international theories of relations, realism is centered around the concept of the importance of the role of the state, military interests, and unitary national interests. The main aspect of international relations according to realists is the idea that the drive for nation-states is to gather power, specifically military power in order to become the hegemon. This is the classical route of realism, theorists believe that states in the international system exist to gain power and military capabilities, and the main actors that exist in this system are nation-states specifically the “great powers”. Great powers refer to the most powerful actors in the system primarily those with significant military capabilities. Realism can be applied to recent international relations between countries, in particular, twentieth-century responses to a particular set of events: the world wars, the rise of totalitarianism, the advent of systematic and bureaucratized mass murder and the threat of nuclear annihilation (Hall 2011:49). This is an argument for the ongoing relevance of realism in modern international relations. 

Structural and Offensive Realism, and Comparison of Liberalism: Structural realism is a school of international politics that asserts the reasons that nation-states go to war are due to the overarching international order. Realists and liberals both believe in an anarchic international order, meaning there is no overarching international power keeping the great powers and other nation-states in check. Structural realism can be divided into two sub-categories, offensive, and defensive realism. Offensive realism asserts that there is no limit to how much power a nation-state will seek to gain, while defensive realism asserts that nation-states want no more power than they need to maintain their position in the international order. This can be seen with the security dilemma and international arms races. In the international order, there are three main types of systems multipolar, bipolar, and unipolar or hegemonic. Historical examples would include the pre-WWI state system as a multipolar system, the Cold War as an example of a bipolar system, and the post-Cold War United States as a liberal hegemony as an example of a unipolar/hegemonic system. Realist scholar John Mearsheimer explains that a “powerful state can pursue liberal hegemony only in a unipolar system in which it need not worry about threats from other great powers” (Mearsheimer 2019:13) suggesting the United States can only remain a liberal state as long as it is a hegemon. 

Arguments For/Against Realism: A theory that debates realism is liberalism, both acknowledge that anarchy exists in international relations the difference lies in realism believing the cause of war is anarchy itself and liberalism believes that war is caused by the uncertainty that comes from anarchy. Liberalism argues that international institutions can create peace between actors. The establishment of an international court system and The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, passed in 1948, can be used as an example to argue against realism, as most UN member countries voted in favor of the declaration despite the fact that it went against their national interests. Including all the “great powers”. Those who argue against realism says that the Universal Human Rights Declaration shows that, within the scope of international relations, individual countries can value the promise of human rights above their own power and military interests. The reaction of the UN security council to the genocide in Rwanda can be used to argue in favor of realism. It would have gone against the interests of the great powers to intervene in Rwanda as they stood to lose soldiers and money without any gain for themselves. A realist would argue that the US and other great powers didn’t intervene in the genocide because it went against their military interests. This can also be used to argue against liberalism because the great powers, as signatories of the UN Human Rights Declarations, would have intervened if they had any true intentions of upholding Human Rights.

First of all Jason is completely full of shit, as usual. No one with access to this blog has ever been denied to join any HEMA Fb group, ever. But this is what is to be expected from a liar. Because he cannot defend against the overwhelming evidence against him and others, he instead dismisses things with absurd claims about the posters while pretending to be a victim. 

Second of all, none of these people are trying to “improve HEMA”. They are simply virtue signaling and trying to take advantage of the current social atmosphere in the US, pretending to be “progressive” to score internet points from (ironically) predominantly upper class white people in the HEMA community, while in reality doing nothing to contribute to improving the actual social issues facing minorities and instead endorsing violence against and harassment of others. Jason himself has by his own admittance tried to get people fired from their job for their political views and bragged about it. Jason also said the looting and burning down of Minneapolis was “necessary” as we showed in screenshots of his statements.

Besides this HEMA is completely irrelevant to any of these social issues they claim to be about. It has nothing to do with economic opportunities, police brutality, or even racism for that matter. Academie Duello, whose harassment and bullying Jason participated in, is one of the most diverse HEMA schools there is and which has contributed to many charities for causes people like Jason claim to believe in. So none of this has anything to do with “social justice” and claiming such is disingenuous. 

They are making token gestures which are meaningless and superficial, for the sole purpose of trying to gain the applause of others in their cabal. They are grasping at straws to somehow make HEMA relevant to these social issues in order to benefit from the attention. They use other people’s tragedies as props to gain fame and influence, and even money with e-begging, claiming to be social crusaders but in reality, just being a bunch of assholes who largely witch hunt others based on outrageous lies.  

Thirdly, Jason is making the ridiculous accusation that the posters of this blog might “hurt someone” because again, he cannot handle criticism and must feign being a victim as a defense mechanism instead of accepting responsibility for his bad conduct. Our entire criticism of the FAR Facebook group and their connections to antifa is that THEY ARE ADVOCATING FOR VIOLENCE and using HEMA as recruitment grounds for such illegal and immoral behavior.

I think for the course of my years on Wattpad, I still don’t get how people ever think of asking me for advice. I’m not the best person to get advice from, but I do my best to answer them. So to help others, I’ve decided to put this up on tumblr (and also because I’m getting sick and tired of retyping this every time somebody messages me for tips).

Hello everyone, it’s Trina (or better known as yourstrulytrina) coming at you for another Wattpad Block Party post.

Last year I did an interview with my books’ wonderful heartthrobs and I came this year to give you a few pieces of advice.

Honestly, I was running through so many ideas on what to do, but then when I took a good look at my inbox, a frequent topic that people send me is about Wattpad and writing itself.

Let’s keep this casual, alright? Because you and I know pretty well that I’m not a professional.

From newbies asking how to start their writing to oldies who are trying to get their story out there – I’ve talked to them all. So let me share you some pieces of advice as I tell you a little story about my own journey here on one of the best sites I’ve discovered.

I started my Wattpad account at the ripe age of fourteen. It wasn’t my first time posting stories on the internet, but I don’t believe those sites had such a big writing/reading community as the wonderful WP. For me, that was already a big leap and at 1am, four hours after I made my account, I uploaded my first ever story here – Falling For The Opposite.

I was terribly nervous yet I think the exhaustion from that day overcame my senses and made me do it. The morning after, I questioned my decisions, but I told myself that the damage was already done so I had no other choice but to continue with it.

And to this day, I believe that that was the best thing I have ever done.

The thing is, I kept overthinking the possibilities that may come from that single upload. I could be shamed and judged by the masses, yet when I gained the courage to do it, I opened a new kind of door for myself. I always tell people, stop thinking that this and that may happen – your actions will have their consequences, but they will also have a reward.

If you keep thinking about the bad, how in the world will the good come in?

Now that we’ve done part one, we head on to the second part of this whole adventure – getting the readers.

On my second day of Wattpad, I branched out. No, I didn’t blatantly asked people to read, nor did I post an ad in other people’s story (speaking of which, don’t advertise like that, it’s extremely rude; think for a moment, how would you like it if some other person plastered their face over yours?). I talked to them, befriended them, and because of that, they piqued an interest and went over to my profile, gave my story a read, and they kind of liked it enough to stick around for the updates.

Remember this, you can’t get overnight fame. I started out with five readers, and I was so happy with them. Those readers had their own friends and fans so of course, my story got passed around until it was slowly starting to grow.

Of course, not everyone liked the story and boy, did they tell it to me straight. Did I get discouraged? Nope. Why? Because I used their words as criticism and it pushed to me to improve my writing.

And remember, you cannot please everyone.

Don’t allow them to say you’re a horrible author, because I don’t believe that. I always say, every author is a good one, they just need the right readers to acknowledge it.

Step three, keeping the readers.

Alright, now you got some people coming to your book to read the chapters. How can you make them stay for updates?

Well, first things first it to treat them nicely. Don’t be rude to them, don’t threaten them, don’t play the victim card, but always thank them and show your appreciation. This is one lesson I wished I knew back then when I was starting out.

May it be five reads or a million, don’t neglect them. Apologize if you missed an update or if you took too long, answer their messages to you, and tell them how important they are.

And if you think for a second that they’re unimportant, please reevaluate your thoughts. They give you insights, they give you motivation, and I know they’re one of the reasons you’re still in this site.

I always tell my readers that I love them, from every update to every announcement. Why? Because I sincerely do. They’re the reason why I keep doing this, they lift me up when I’m down and they’re there to celebrate with me if something good happens.

The biggest weapon you have in this site are the loyalty of your readers.

Next part, keeping up with the updates.

Update, for the love of everyone, update. You may be nice, but you can only hold the people’s attention for so long. Give them what they want and what they came for – a story. Keep them consistent, but don’t update too often that people will get bored.

And I know, I’m hypocritical for saying this. In my defense, this is how I started.

My suggestion, the minimal amount of time in between updates is three days. Keep them wanting, but keep them satisfied.

Maximum? Well, just don’t take six months (ehem.)

One piece of advice, before I end this division – be contented. Be happy with ten reads and be happy with a million reads. It will help your emotions and mentality about writing. If you’re always aiming for such a high read count, then you might get discouraged. If you’re easily contented, then you’re so happy with just a small amount that you want to keep pushing and that’s what’s important.

Another topic most people are always so worried about is the writing process.

I’m no professional in the sense of grammar and spelling (this chapter is a very good example of that), but I can give a thing or two in story progression.

Introductions. Perhaps the most important part of the story. This is when you start the whole journey and how well this goes will determine how many readers will stick around to read the rest.

Give an overview of what’s to come. Who are your main characters? Where is it happening? What’s the theme in the book? Stuff like those are what’s needed in the introduction, or as others call it, the first chapter. For me though, I termed this as a Prologue or Introduction but it all differs from the way you want to portray it. Most stories doesn’t contain a prologue and that’s alright – the difference is that introduction/prologue is your description bank, it’s where you basically recall flashbacks, introduce people to the readers, and of course, trying to give an insight of your plot.

Again, most writers forego it and instead goes straight ahead to the first chapter. If your story can hold up without a prologue then by all means, go to the first chapter.

Body Chapters. Here are the parts that are in between the intro and the end. This is what we call the development. I, myself, am guilty with filler chapters. Some days, I just can’t think of anything, and filler chapters are good for drama breaks (a breather for some readers). Though, remember that a book can’t be all filler chapters.

This is what makes up your book so stick with your plot and find a way to go through the alphabet, because you can’t just go from A to Z in one snap. You can’t have the character introduced on the first chapter, get married on the second, and die in the third. Unless you’re writing a short story, of course, but you still need to create the spine and body.

How long should chapters be? It depends on each person but I think a standard among Wattpad writers and authors in general is at least 2,000-2,500 words if you’re writing a regular novel. Long enough to get everything that needs to be said in there but short enough for the reader to keep turning the pages.

The End.  This could be as emotional as you want it to be. This is what you need to make in order to give a lasting impression to your readers. It could be the bridge to a sequel or a closure to a story. Any way you want it to be, just make sure it wraps up everything that needs to be wrapped up with the book.

I’m still writing three years later and I’ve met so many wonderful writers and admins of Wattpad. And perhaps the greatest thing ever – that story that I uploaded during one in the morning on that fateful day is currently published and can be bought in actual bookstores.

You don’t have to follow these, they’re simply advice. Some techniques that may work well for me may not work for you, and I encourage you to do your best.

It has been 17 years, 6,205 days, or 148,920 hours, since the United States and their NATO allies have been launched their campaign against the Taliban, the leading party of Afghanistan and who were giving refuge to Al-Qaeda, and Al-Qaeda itself. The War on Terror was launched in response to the attacks against the United States on September 11th, 2001. The early two-decade long war has costed the lives of an estimated 2,200 American soldiers and 40,000 Afghan civilians were lost.These figures are not including the estimated 29,000 Afghan security forces that lost their lives since 2015. [5] Outside of the horrifying number of lives that have been lost in the 17-year long conflict, there have been countless number of human right abuses committed by both sides of the conflict. Schools have been a widely used for military purposes between Afghan government forces and the Taliban, which have led numerous children to be deprived of an education, primarily girls. [6] Besides the Afghan government and the Taliban committing human rights abuses, the United States, the one who came into the region to try to stabilize, protect, and promote democracy in the region, has committed countless human rights abuses. Some of the abuses the United States have committed are: denying prisoners basic protections that is mandated by the Geneva Conventions, preforming extraordinary renditions, and the use of torture.

Within the first year of the conflict starting, President George W. Bush issued a presidential memorandum, which is an executive action to help shape the actions of departments throughout the United States government. This presidential memorandum authorized United States interrogators to deny the basic rights that is mandated by the Geneva Conventions to prisoners.[3] The Geneva Convention mandates that all prisoners of war must be treated humanely, they are protected against any kind of violence, they cannot be prosecuted for taking part in hostilities. [2] After President Bush issued his presidential memorandum, this meant that anyone who is detained because of their participation in the War on Terror, can be treated inhumanely. This could take place in the form of violence, which includes torture, being prosecuted for their part in the hostilities. In addition, the United States have given the status of unlawful combatant to prisoners. [7] Giving prisoners the status of unlawful combatants allows the United States to put these prisoners on trial for the involvement in this war. This presidential memorandum is going against the Geneva Convention, but also this memorandum is violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, more specifically Article Five. Article Five states that no shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman treatment or punishment. [1]

Outside of denying prisoners basic protections, abusing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United States government has performed extraordinary-rendition. [4] These extraordinary-rendition are abductions and extrajudicial transfer of people from one state to another, and these extraordinary-renditions are normally state-sponsored. During the War on Terror, then United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had requested that the C.I.A. to hide a prisoner in Iraq from the Red Cross for several months. [4] This act of hiding prisoners of war is a violation of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, which states that all soldiers and civilians captured in war, must be registered. [2] In response, the Bush Administration stated that Al Qaeda members are not part of a state-sponsored military, which means that they are not covered by the Conventions. However, the Geneva Conventions of 1949, states that all soldiers and civilians, it does not state whether these soldiers must be state-sponsored. In addition, the Conventions includes civilians, if they are not soldiers that means they are civilians, which means that they must be registered.

In the past 17 years, the United States went into Afghanistan with a mission to disrupt Al-Qaeda’s ability to perform attacks on the scale of September 11th, and to dismantle the Taliban. However, over the past 17 years that mission has been muddled by the numerous human rights crimes that the United States have committed. The issue here is that the United States have violated several important Conventions with regards to how war should be performed, and the treatment of prisoner of war. Will the International Criminal Court presume the former leaders and officials of the United States government for the part in these violations, or will they let these abuses go by because the original intent was admirable, and these abuses are just another aspect of war.

In these cases, minors are ‘tried as adults’ at the discretion of a judge. They do not face charges in a juvenile court, but rather in the adult criminal justice system. Many factors contribute to the judge’s decision, such as the age of the minor, the seriousness of the offense, past criminal history and the brutality of the crime [1]. This has led to many juvenile offenders facing penalties as harsh as execution, the most recent being the execution of Scott Allen Hain in 2003. Hain was 17 at the time he committed capital murder and 32 at the time of his execution [3]. Situations like Hain’s have raised concerns among both the public and those in the legal community over the ethics of juvenile sentencing. Starting with Roper v. Simmons in 2005, there have been several landmark cases on the matter to date and it seems as though the legal system has attempted to address the ethical misgivings of harsh juvenile punishment.

On September 8, 1993 in Fenton, Missouri, Christopher Simmons, along with a younger accomplice broke into the house of a 46-year-old woman named Shirley Crook. With the intent of both robbery and murder, the two boys cased the residence, bound their victim with duct tape and threw her into the back of a minivan. They drove to a nearby railway bridge and after gagging the woman, dropped her off the side and into the river where she was found the next day [5]. The crime was done without passion, and premeditation was all but obvious. His accomplice testified not only that the murder of Ms. Crook was planned with precise care, but that Simmons boasted about the crime afterwards. The premeditation of the crime ensured a capital murder conviction, but it was its brutality which caused jurors to seek the death penalty.

After numerous appeals and subsequent denials, Simmon’s case eventually reached the Supreme Court. At the time, it had already been decided in Thompson v. Oklahoma that that “our standards of decency do not permit the execution of any offender under the age of 16 at the time of the crime.” [6] While this was the case, several years later in Stanford v. Kentucky it was reiterated that the same standards of decency cited in Thompson did not forbid the execution of juvenile offenders over the age of 15 but under 18. [6]. It was in Roper v. Simmons that this would be challenged.

Justice Kennedy delivered the opinion of the court; that the death penalty was to be probated in cases where the offender was under the age of 18 at the time of the crime [6]. Kennedy cited the 8th amendment in the first portion of his argument, much in the same way it was used in Thompson. Kennedy stated that “The prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishments,” like other expansive language in the Constitution, must be interpreted according to its text, by considering history, tradition, and precedent, and with due regard for its purpose and function in the constitutional design.” [6] Kennedy asserted that our society had reached a consensus on the issue of executing juveniles, saying that though it was not as rapid as in cases abolishing the death penalty for the mentally retarded “we still consider the change (in societies views) from Stanford to this case to be significant.” [6].

In the second portion of his argument, Justice Kennedy echoed sentiment from past cases; that the death penalty should only apply to a narrow category of offenders convicted of society’s most heinous crimes. He used this precedent to insist that “Three general differences between juveniles under 18 and adults demonstrate that juvenile offenders cannot with reliability be classified among the worst offenders “. For the first difference Kennedy points out something obvious to most people, that in general minors lack the maturity of full-grown adults. He cited several studies, including one indicating that juveniles are most often overrepresented in many forms of reckless behavior. He also argued that this claim is already baked into our laws saying, “In recognition of the comparative immaturity and irresponsibility of juveniles, almost every State prohibits those under 18 years of age from voting, serving on juries, or marrying without parental consent.” [6].

For the second difference, Kennedy again used psychological studies to justify something that could be considered common knowledge. In this case it was that youth are more susceptible to negative influences, like peer pressure and a need for acceptance. The study he cited found that “minors, [juveniles] lack the freedom that adults have to extricate themselves from a criminogenic setting” and thus lack the culpability of an adult offender.” [6] Without this culpability, the death penalty is without ethical standing and cannot be applied.

The third difference Kennedy cites is the lack of a stable personality, and the fact that the “personality traits of juveniles are more transitory” [6] meaning that juveniles lack the character and self-conception necessary for a conviction such as the death penalty. He informs the reader to examine E. Erikson, Identity: Youth and Crisis (1968), and concludes that “These differences render suspect any conclusion that a juvenile falls among the worst offenders.” thus disallowing any justification for the use of the death penalty for such offenders.

The use of the 8th amendment along with the citation of studies highlighting the differences between adult offenders and juveniles was enough to justify overruling Stanford and eliminating the option of the death penalty for those who committed their crime while below the age of 18. This ruling has had far reaching implications, as it not only cancelled the execution of over 70 offenders but prevented countless others from ever being placed on death row. The ruling is still with us today and was only the first of a series of landmark cases handling contentious issues involving the status of juvenile offenders.

The dinosaur of the day: Chasmosaurus

Ceratopsid that lived in the Cretaceous in North America

Name means “opening lizard,” named that because of large openings in its frill

Found in the Dinosaur Park Formation of the Dinosaur Provincial Park of Alberta, Canada

Two species: Chasmosaurus russelli and Chasmosaurus belli (type species)

Chasmosaurus russelli is in the older lower Dinosaur Park Formation and Chasmosaurus belli is in the middle Dinosaur Park Formation

Lawrence Morris Lambe found the first Chasmosaurus bones in 1897 (holotype, part of a neck frill). He thought it could be a new species but categorized it as an already known genus, Monoclonius. He called it Monoclonis belli

Species name belli is in honor of collector Walter Bell

In 1913, Charles Sterberg and his sons found a few complete Monoclonis bellis skulls in Alberta (plus a largely complete skeleton with skin impressions), and in January 1914, Lambe named them Protorosaurus (as an ancestor to Torosaurus). But that name was already used for a Permian reptile found in Germany, described in 1836 by Meyer. So Lambe renamed it Chasmosaurus in February 1914

Many skulls and fossils have been referred to Chasmosaurus, and many species named (though only two are still valid)

Barnum Brown named Chasmosaurus kaiseni in 1933 (based on a skull that had long brow horns), which may be related to Chasmosaurus canadensis, named in 1990 by Thomas Lehman.

Chasmosaurus canadensis was originally Monoclonis canadensis (Lambe had found it in 1902 and described it as Eoceratops canadensis in 1915). This Eoceratops and Chasmosaurus kaiseni were thought to be Mojoceratops (Nicholas Longrich), but some scientists think Mojoceratops is a synonym of Chasmosaurus russelli. In 2016, Campbell and others found that Eoceratops and Chasmosaurus kaiseni were Chasmosaurus.

In 1933 Richard Swann Lull named a specimen Chasmosaurus breviorstris (had a short snout), but it’s now seen as a junior synonym of Chasmosaurus belli.

Charles Mortram Sternberg named Chasmosaurus russelli in 1940 (species name in honor of Loris Shano Russell).

In 1987 Gregory Paul renamed Pentaceratops sternbergii into Chasmosaurus, but no one has really accepted that

In 1989 Thomas Lehman described Chasmosaurus mariscalensis (found in Texas), but that’s been renamed Agujaceratops.

In 2000, George Olshevsy renamed Monoclonius recurvicornis (originally named in 1889) to Chasmosaurus recurvicornis, but it’s now a nomen dubium

In 2001, Chasmosaurus irvinensis was named, but has since been renamed Vagaceratops (in 2010)

Chasmosaurus was about 14-16 ft (4.3-4.8 m) long and weighed 1.5-2 tons

Skin impressions that Charles Sternberg found had large scales in horizontal rows that were among smaller scales (hexagonal or pentagonal), unclear about color

Had three horns, one on the nose and two on the brow

Horns were short, though Chasmosaurus russelli had longer horns (esp. brown horns), that were more curved backwards

Chasmosaurus belli had a v-shaped frill at the back (Chasmosaurus russelli is more of a shallow u-shape)

Sides of the frill had osteoderms

Not clear what Chasmosaurus used its horns and frill for (horns were short and frill had such large openings, so not great for defense). May have used its beak for defense instead

Frill may have been to look more vicious or for thermoregulation, or to attract mates (may have been brightly colored)

Skin covered the large openings so it would have looked like a solid frill (because of soft tissue in the frill, it’s possible Chasmosaurus could have flushed and made its frill look more vivid)

Had a longer snout and jaws than other ceratopsians it lived around, so may have been a pickier eater

May have taken care of its young

Phil Currie and a team found a juvenile Chasmosaurus belli in Alberta. Thought to be three years old and had similar limb and frill proportions to an adult, so probably wasn’t that fast, and didn’t need to be to keep up with adults

Chasmosaurinae is a subfamily of ceratopsid

Chasmosaurinae had large brow horns and long frills (compared to centrosaurines, another subfamily of ceratopsid, which had short brow horns and shorter frills with long spines coming out of the frills)

Chasmosaurine fossils have been found in western Canada, the western United States, and northern Mexico.

Fun fact: The first dinosaurs were carnivorous, later some dinosaurs were omnivorous, and eventually some dinosaurs were herbivorous. Herbivores were massively successful by the mid-Jurassic.

The Review:

Although wildly entertaining, The Cruel Stars didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

It started out with a bunch of POV introductions, one at a time, that took up a good 20% of the page count. The language was a bit thick at first, and there were a few info-dump scenes where the entire conversation served no purpose but to tell the reader stuff about the character. Needless to say, it took a moment to get going.

But get going it did, and I found myself interested in most of the characters. The concept is that these slightly remarkable individuals will have to come together to save the galaxy from an elitist threat. So the culminations of events that eventually converged them together kept my interest really well. There was also a good balance between character development moments and action scenes (after the first 20%). When the inciting moment finally hit, I was hooked.

Up until the last few chapters, I had the book at a 4-star rating. But the way the events unfolded left me wanting. For starters, the “remarkableness” of the individuals involved didn’t play a huge role in the final conflict. What’s more, all of the interesting dynamics that had been building the whole book were reduced down to a surprisingly simple outcome. It was too simple for my tastes, taking the expansive feel of the story and reducing it down to a minuscule gunfight within a few mile radius. At least, that’s how it felt.

I loved the concept of the enemy – a group of human “purists” who are out to destroy any who have been genetically or cybernetically altered. But Birmingham didn’t really explore that much in this first book. There was a single sentence in passing that speculated on whether or not the alterations were destroying what makes people “human” at their core (implying it could eventually cause them to destroy themselves) that my mind ran with. It gave the hated enemy a really interesting ground to stand on because, theoretically, they could have an outside perspective of corruption that those ingrained in the system can’t see (or they could just be evil fanaticists… it’s hard to tell). But it got me asking questions: What does the “enemy” know that the POVs don’t?! Is there more depth here? But the problem is that none of this was explored in the text, it’s just my own conjecture.

I love profanity in books. Seriously. A well-placed f-bomb can completely elevate a scene, and I especially love when it’s used for comedic effect. But for it to work, it has to be incorporated with a certain amount of consciousness. Swearing is it’s own art form, and and based on its use in Cruel Stars, Birmingham was essentially fingerprinting with mud. The placement was random and in such great volume that it only served to make the characters sound crass and uncreative. Even it’s placement within each sentence made the language clunky and awkward.

So for some pacing issues, an over-simplified climax, an under-realized concept, and the chaotic use of profanity, I came away from the book disappointed in enough key elements that I probably won’t be continuing the series, but also still kind of glad I’d read it.

Recommendations: the book advertises that it’s similar to both the Expanse and Battlestar Galactica, but I thought it channeled Serenity more than anything else (if we must compare. Although it did have some similarities to the BG tangent Pegasus, but the comparison is thin). I probably wouldn’t recommend this unless you’ve already read a bunch of other titles in the genre and just want some mindless action with a little humor mixed in. I was a lot more critical in this review than I usually am, but at least the book provoked something from me. And despite my objections, it was still enjoyable to read. Do with that what you will haha.
