The cast for the upcoming Live-Action adaptation of Artemis Fowl has been announced.
Amazing news today from Walt Disney Studios! We have learned the initial casting for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Artemis Fowl, which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and produced by Branagh and Judy Hofflund. Take a look:
Ferdia Shaw as Artemis: Ferdia Shaw was chosen out of 1200 candidates for this part, and will make his onscreen debut in the role. For those who aren’t familiar with the books, the character of Artemis Fowl is 12-year-old genius who finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning against a powerful, hidden race of fairies who may be behind his father’s disappearance.
Josh Gad as Mulch Diggums: Mulch Diggums is a kleptomaniacal dwarf who works for the fairies. We are always a fan of Josh Gad and can’t wait to see him in yet another Walt Disney Studios film!
Judy Dench as Commander Root: Commander Root is the leader of the fairy police force. Judi Dench is an Academy Award winner and also one of our favorite humans, so we are so excited to see her take on this role!
Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short: Captain Holly Short is the elf hero, and we’re pretty sure we’re going to want to be just like her.
Nonso Anozie as Butler: Butler is Artemis Fowl’s bodyguard. Anozie also starred in Cinderella, so we’re already a fan.
The live-action adaptation of Artemis Fowl is based on the bestselling book series by Eoin Colfer, with a screenplay by award-winning playwright Conor McPherson.

MALT DISNAE is now available via the below link AND it is FREE AS FUCK (as is all my music) and there are FIVE options to choose from; I recommend looking through this on a laptop / desktop so you can see the various artwork clearer : )
The reason I’m doing this is because after a few BARRIE conversations, I want to approach how I do things creatively a bit differently because at the end of the day, I do this because I absolutely love making music and I feel, although I’ve always given what I’ve earned away, this previous ethos still revolves around capital, monetary gains etc.
Now, you can pay something if you want, but if you don’t, then that’s totally cool…all I ask is that you do something sound for someone else in return, maybe take your maw out for a jar of McEwens Export, or phone up an old friend and organise to do something fun that they would like; maybe arrange an orienteering event or go play a wonderful game of drink; or both lol.
If you do chuck some beans my way, then I will use these to do some sort of good with…in previous years, I have usually donated all my creative earnings to a charity of choice, however I want to try something different this year; not sure what but please trust me that I will be as transparent with these plans as soon as I can figure out how I’m going to try and make a positive difference; initial thoughts are helping raise mental health awareness and contribute solutions to the ever growing issue around homelessness.
SO…back to the release, I’ve uploaded this album 5 times; each one has a different album cover which is a representation of each character within the album.  The idea is that after a month, whichever one has been downloaded the most will become the main artwork.
Just as a reminder, this album is a concept piece loosely based on the grim origins of certain Walt Disney princesses lol so you can pick from:
Charming Rides / Paralysed Tears = Rapunzel
The Call of the German Seven / Eternal Sleep = Snow White
Mad Jack Arrives / Fine Dining = Sleeping Beauty / Cinderella
Ring the Bells Ye French Priest / Bones Dusting = The Frog Princess / Esmerelda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Birth of Death Sung By Whales / Deadwood = Ariel from The Little Mermaid
So aye, that’s that…I’ve noted who was all involved within BandCamp but I want to say a huge thank you to everyone again, so Michael Brennan, Duncan Aitken, Liam Saunders, Rachel Wright, Pete Maher and Rory Buchanan, I will always be eternally grateful to you all for helping me create this piece which I am so so proud of…also, Matt Punton, Greig Duncanson, Sean DeFrancesco, Marty McPherson, Gameboy and anyone else who had the patience to listen to me ramble on and on and on till my thoughts were completely focussed on how to take this forward, muchos cheers to you all as well.
Anyway, that’s my piece said so all I’ll say now is that I truly hope you enjoy everything to do with Malt Disnae, pals, listen with head-cans and please feel free to share to spread this all over the digital ether.
 Much love.

Verizon can't find partners for its Sling-style TV service
Verizon has been trying to get its own Sling TV-like live TV streaming service off the ground, but that effort has apparently hit some snags. The operator plans to offer dozens of channels, including CBS and ESPN, to compete with rivals, including Dish's Sling TV and AT&T's DirecTV Now. However, it hasn't been able to sign enough broadcasters to kick off the effort, according to a report from Bloomberg. That means the launch, originally scheduled for the summer, may be put off until after the fall.
Media companies are reluctant to sign on with Verizon, according to Bloomberg's unnamed sources, because it still doesn't have a solid plan for its streaming service, including the pricing, programming mix and technology. Verizon has also lost several key executives doing content strategy and acquisition for the service, including former NBCUniversal exec Chip Canter. Negotiations are reportedly being led by Erin McPherson, formerly of Yahoo and Walt Disney.
Verizon offers a cable TV service but has a relatively small number of cable TV subscribers (under 5 million). However, it has 7 million broadband subscribers, so likely figured it could cash in by offering a cheaper streaming service to cord-cutters. As with AT&T, it would likely offer the service as a bundle it with its mobile plans, too. Verizon already has the Go90 service, but it's more for YouTube-style short-form clips, and is reportedly doing poorly.
The service will reportedly have pricing around the same as DirecTV, around $35 per month. Verizon is bound to get it together at some point, having made big bets on media of all kinds -- including AOL (Engadget's parent) and Yahoo -- in an effort to gain more media content and ad revenue. Comcast is reportedly also looking to launch a streaming service called Xfinity Instant TV by year end. It looked like Verizon would easily enter the market first, but now that's not so sure. (We've reached out to Verizon for comment, but don't hold your breath.)

“Shortfall” by Alice Echols
“Shortfall” by Alice Echols
In a chance conversation with her father some 20 years ago, Alice Echols discovered that her grandfather had been a notorious cad.  He had operated a building and loan in Colorado Springs, and through profligacy and fraud, he bilked thousands of depositors out of their savings.  The man had been behind one of Colorado’s most sensational scams.
That was in the 1920s.  Unsophisticated middle-class savers back then poured their money into financial scams. The perpetrators lived extravagantly and were so callous with depositors’ money that they were known as “banksters.” Such a man was Walter Davis.  He and his wife, who may or may not have been her husband’s accomplice, lived high on the hog.  Davis kept a room at Denver’s Brown Palace, most likely to be close to his mistress, whom he showered with cash and gifts.
Davis’ building and loan was among the 60 percent of such institutions in Colorado that failed, including all four in Colorado Springs, and Davis went on the lam.  The scam was so outrageous that he was on the FBI’s “most wanted” list.
Echols, a historian, writes about Davis against a background of banking irregularities, double-dealing, and lax oversight on the part of regulators.  Throughout this history of both U.S. and Colorado financial impropriety int eh 1920s, she weaves the story of her grandparents.  She uses long-hidden family documents as well as her own mother’s recollections in a story that is the reverse of “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

“The Amazing Kolb Brothers of Grand Canyon” by Roger Naylor
“The Amazing Kolb Brothers of Grand Canyon” by Roger Naylor
“The Kolb Brothers were rock-climbing, ledge-hopping, mule-chasing, river-running canyoneers.  They were rash, nervy and utterly fearless,” writes Roger Naylor.  And those were some of their less-strenuous qualities.

Emery and Ellsworth Kolb arrived in the Grand Canyon at the turn of the century and were an exciting presence for 75 years.  Their major contribution was as photographers, producing extraordinary pictures of not just the canyons but also their own feats.  They photographed themselves leaping from cliff to cliff, hanging from fragile tree branches to take pictures of the canyon thousands of feet below. Their motion picture of a journey down the Colorado River through the canyon ran in their studio from 1915 to 1976, making it the longest continually running movie in U.S. history.
The biography in “The Amazing Kolb Brothers of Grand Canyon” is an interesting take on the two daredevils.  But it is the photographs that give you chills. There is Emery straddling two cliffs and Ellsworth using a home-made ladder to traverse the Hummingbird Trail.  They photographed Theodore Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, William Jennings Bryan and Walt Disney at the canyon, and there is an amazing picture of schoolgirl ballerinas in classic poses at the very edge of a precipice.

“The Great Medicine Road: Narratives of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, Part 3:  1850-1855” edited by Michael L. Tate
Some 500,000 people made the westward trek across America from 1850 to 1855, and to the delight of historians, many of them wrote about their experiences. Some kept diaries, while others wrote narratives, often in old age when they looked back with pride on the greatest experiences of their lives.
“The Great Medicine Road” is the third of four volumes of first-person Overland Trail accounts published by the Arthur H. Clark Co. Indians called the Platte River Trail “the Great Medicine Road” because of the endless hordes of immigrants. This volume includes nine accounts, one of them by a military surveyor, the others by ordinary men and women.
One of the best is by Mary Jane Long, who crossed in 1852 at age 13 and recorded her adventure many years later.  She writes of a man who tried to buy her for a sack of flour and of a group of immigrants so hopelessly off course that they were known as the lost wagon train. More moving are her accounts of a murder of a married man whose killer wanted the man’s wife, and of cholera victims begging for water. (A doctor had decreed that water would hasten death.)  Still, Long’s mother took pity on a sick girl and fed her a tablespoon of water. She was the only cholera sufferer the author knew of who lived.

“Both Sides of the Bullpen:  Navajo Trade and Posts” by Robert S. McPherson
“Both Sides of the Bullpen:  Navajo Trade and Posts” by Robert S. McPherson
For nearly 100 years, trading posts were the economic lifeblood of the Navajo reservation.  Traders on one side of the bullpen (the U-shape counter in the store) provided merchandise, while the Navajo, on the other side, sold sheep and handicrafts.  Author Robert S. McPherson writes about the complicated relationship between the cultures and their interdependency. Traders did far more than provide merchandise.  They also participated in cultural and religious events, interpreted government mandates and allowed the Indians to pawn their jewelry when times were bad.
The heyday of trading was from 1900 to 1940.  After the war, Navajos were more worldly, more mobile and had a variety of economic options, so that they no longer depended on traders to act as a banking system.  Today, most trading posts are little more than convenience stores.

“For Purple Mountains:  Colorado, a Journey of the Senses” by Barbara Sparks
“For Purple Mountains:  Colorado, a Journey of the Senses” by Barbara Sparks
Barbara Sparks divides Colorado into five life zones in a splendid book of black-and-white photographs. She includes additional sections of  aspen, canyons, mountain parks and the Colorado Plateau.
“The most pervasive quality of this land is its openness and lack of light pollution,” she writes in her introduction. The photographs show vast swaths of plains and mountains, trees and wildlife.  One of the few concessions to man is the interior of a 1913 12-sided silo whose rotting boards comprise an abstract picture.
Most picture books today are in color.  The black-and-white photographs in “For Purple Mountains” allow the viewer to concentrate on the line and form and artistic quality of the shots.
