On Saturday March 30, 2024, I’d driven from Modesto up to Stockton to get a manicure pedicure. We also were moving offices from one floor to another in a building near the court house. My stomach was off a bit. Probably nerves due to the move. I stopped at the gym in Manteca to do 35 minutes on the treadmill and then headed home. On arrival, Martin Cantwell was standing in the Carport at my house waiting for me.

My heart fell a bit. Martin is my friend who had lived with me, but, had been homeless since about 2018. He was there with his red bike. I had given him $40 recently to buy it from his friend Tyler. I had been looking forward to an evening on my own. Storm clouds were building and it began to thunder. I invited him into my house. He sat by four painting done by a street artist friend of mine in San Fransisco. He asked about them.he said that he was tired. I thought that he was studying the paintings, but, he had fallen asleep sitting there I couldn’t let him stay. Very difficult decision.But, I could ask him what he needed now. I could take him out for a cheese burger. We dined at Nation’s burgers on McHenery. We talked about my sister Zoe’s death. He knew Zoe. They didn’t really like each other . We laughed about the time years ago she was in the back seat of the car complaining about something and Martin turned up the radio to drown her out! He was a silent witness to my verbal grieving and retelling the events of Zoe’s last days. Back at the house, he left his bike there for safe keeping. I gave him my old back pack and $60. I drove him back out to Hatch road near the Mc Donalds where he and other homeless stay. I had given he and Tyler, who is also homeless, coats recently. He told me that his coat had been taken by a code enforcement officer. That angered me. Martin had left it in his shopping cart with a friend who was watching it for him. I asked him why code enforcement took hi coat. He said that it was because it was in a shopping cart. He said Tyler still had the coat that I had bought for him, though. 

I couldn’t write about this Martin encounter until today. Too painful. Too profound.

There was a side to Happy few saw and even fewer knew well enough to understand.

Happy stared at his pay for the coke run this month, after this, he'd have at least two million dollars sitting in his safe at home. He knew how you felt about it, "blood money." He can recall when he came home after the first lot when they just got out of Stockton.

"Look what I got little girl."

Your face fell as you saw the wad of money, "is that from the coke?"

He nodded, "you know I love you right?" Happy was worried, "of course, and I love you."

You smiled sadly, "then please don't spend a cent of that on me. I love you and accept you with all my heart but that doesn't mean I need to agree with everything do you. I can't live with myself knowing you spent money from drugs on me."

Happy felt his heart ache, "sure, I get it. Hey, you're cheap to keep anyway, like that elderly hamster you brought home."

You giggled, "don't start with me Mr Lowman, you love Mr Jelly Butt just as much as I do."

Happy laughed, "yeah, I do. I'm going to go out and buy him some organic lettuce with my cocaine cash."

Your laugh, one of his favourite sounds, came pouring out of your mouth, "you spoil him."

Happy was sitting on the picnic table when he got your call, "can you come and get me please?"

Happy knew that tone, it had been a bad day at the animal shelter, "sure little girl, hold tight, I'll be there soon." Happy drove off as fast as he could, coming to see you out front of the shelter, cooing at the kittens in the window, your eyes were red and your face was puffy.

He handed you your helmet and held your hand as you climbed onto the back of his back, burying your face in his back for a moment to collect yourself. "You ok to ride?"

You nodded, "yeah, it's been a long day, I just want to go home." Happy drove back to the house, he could tell that the closer he got, the more trouble you were having keeping yourself together. You lasted till you got into the door before you fell apart, Happy pulled you into his arms and hugged you tightly.

"The grant got denied, I tried so so hard but they said no. I don't know what we're going to do, how can anyone say no to tiny creatures." Happy felt so much rage, God knows how much money he and his brothers had given the shelter, all it took was one look at a tiny face and they were opening their wallets. Kozik was banned from walking in because he already had a house full of animals and Juice was the champion of the foster fail.

"We can have a fundraiser at the next party, the last one got you through the month, didn't it."

You nodded, whipping your face, "you don't need to do that."

Happy grunted, "that's not what I asked, I asked if it would get you through the month."

You smiled softly, "it did."

"Then it's done. Now go and wash up, I'll put on dinner."

You were sitting on the couch with Happy after dinner, his hand holding yours while his thumb ran over the back of your palm, "I like your hands, they're nice."

Happy paused, most people were terrified of what he did with them. "You do, do you? What do you like about them?"

You giggled shyly, "they feel nice, men with soft hands are the ones who reject my grant." It was no secret you didn't like rich people, he liked the way you appreciated his work worn hands.

"We need mechanics, Hap. How else would I be safe enough to bring all the tiny creatures home."

"You're very sweet." You shifted and put your head in his lap, Happy's hands coming to rub out the knots in your back, after a while, your breathing became heavy and you were pushing into his hands.

"You wanna head to the bedroom."

There was a pause, "yes please." Happy stood up and took you with him, his hand wrapping around yours as he walked you into the room. The dog was fast asleep on the bed, Happy scratching his big white head to wake him up before shooing him out of the room.

"Go on buddy, you can come back later." The dog scurried off with a butt wiggle, happy to be able to have the whole couch to himself. Happy took your hands and sat down on the end of the bed, pulling you with him.

"You wanna do something, or do you just want to cuddle."

You smiled softly, "can I decide in a little bit?" Happy nodded and laid down, pulling you into his arms as his lips pressed to your forehead.

"You wanna talk about what happened today?"

You took a few seconds, "I wasn't crying because I was sad, I was crying because I was angry. This asshole showed up in a fucking Bugatti, wearing an Armani suit and this foul perfume. I saw his house key, it was one of those fancy key fobs that open huge front doors on those colossal mansions. He said they didn't have to funds and that we should look elsewhere."

Happy grunted, he could feel the thoughts of murder filling his brain. "He sounds like a dick, how's Tig's lastest foster going?"

You giggled, "the same way the last one went, he's going to have another dog in a few weeks." Happy chuckled, he was convinced you were placing them with animals you knew they wouldn't be able to give up.

He shifted to look at your face, "I'm sorry shit keeps going wrong for you, I know how much you care about those animals."

You sniffed, "I just don't know how people can be so heartless. He had the money."

Happy ran his thumb over your cheek, "my sweet girl, you want me to take your mind off it?" The way he was looking over you made it clear what was on his mind but there was no way he would do anything without you being sure.

"I'd like that." He stood up, taking your hands in his and began to undress you, his hands moving over your skin with gentle brushes. He gave you a soft smile, the love in his heart reaching his eyes in an endearing wrinkle. He lifted your hands to his mouth and kissed each fingertip, stopping at your index finger to run his thumb over the little red pinprick, "one of our new kittens has developed a taste for human meat."

Happy laughed, warm and filled with affection, "a taste for human meat, or just a naughty kitten?"

You giggled, "well, you know cats. If you don't boost their ego, their fluffy little faces get sad."

Happy's hand moved to your face, his fingertips grazing your cheek, "you are the most beautiful woman I've ever seen." When you went to respond, he raised his other hand, "just let me look after you."

He moved to the bed and fluffed the pillow before waving his arm and directing you to lay down. As you got comfortable, he pressed the back of his hand to the sole of your foot, "you want some socks?"

You shook your head, "I don't think any part of me will be cold for long.

He moved up the bed, settling next to you, propped up on his elbows, his eyes raking over your skin. His vision reached your face and his eyebrows wrinkled, "you're still thinking."

You huffed, "are you going to do something about that?"

He smiled, a little sweet, a little mean, "be good and let me look after you.

"If you keep this up, I'm going to have to break out the big guns and I don't think you want to wait for me to tie all the knots I want to." You took a deep breath and relaxed against the pillows, Happy smiling at the effectiveness of his threat.

He lifted his hand toward you and ran his fingertips from your cheek down your neck. You could feel the callouses on his fingers as he ran them down our chest, Happy chuckling the gasp you let out as his index finger circled your nipple with the gentleness of a man touching an object of worship on an altar.

You shook your head, the shelter couldn't really afford another animal but you'd find a place for whatever it was. Except, when you got closer you saw it wasn't an animal, it was a box of money.

"How much is there?"

You were so shocked that it didn't feel real, "three mill plus, there was a note but no name."

"I think you could make better use of this."

You rubbed your face, "has someone counted this yet?"

They shook their heads, "alright, four of you do that while Cindy and I lodge the paperwork for an anonymous cash donation. We can fix our ceiling, build that new OR and fix the dog kennels."

Our biggest achievement so far is probably opening for Crywank on their first US tour, at The Starlet Room in Sacramento.

My personal favorite show we've played that there is footage of, is the going away house show we played for our dear friend Autumn (Otto) Sky Hall, who moved to Pennsylvania near the end of last year. This is me gushing about how much I love them as a segue into the first song we ever wrote.

I can't quite put into words how much finally joining this project means to me. Like, I have a fucking Wayne Jetski tattoo. Josiah's music is the reason we know each other, I've genuinely loved it for years and it's the reason I asked them to start Blooming Heads with me. I've never earned a spot in a band I love before. It's truly an indescribable feeling.

Having tired of dealing with a fixer-upper in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Arvin Lebec has moved to a contemporary loft condo in San Francisco's Mission Bay. As a cost-saving measure in the go-go early 2000s, it was constructed without windows.

This was an impulse, and I really like it. The smoking roosters are the creation of an artist I encountered at the Ybor City Saturday Market two years ago. They add that contemporary urban vibe.

The kitchen unit is from Dolls House Emporium, and I salivated over it for about 20 years before buying it. The table is a cupcake stand from defunct and much-mourned A.C. Moore, the greatest of craft stores. The two plastic chairs are from a little vintage toy shop on City Island, as is the chair Arvin is sitting in. His sofa is back stock from the going-out-of-business sale of the A.C. Moore in Middletown, CT. The old-school sound system was on the 25-cent table at Earth & Tree Miniatures.

The bed is from long-defunct Bearly Big Enough in Stockton; I think we got it from a different local shop who bought up BBE's stock before going belly-up itself. The little nightstand was a gift from a friend back East that I need to track down on social media because she was awesome and I miss her. The fancy chest is one I painted up for Mom's version of the Gray Mansard, using an unfinished chest from Auntie Em's in Arizona. The tansu is from Mom's collection and is a welcome find, as I apparently lost mine (or I gave Mom this one).

The bath set is just one Mom had among her millions. I like it because it's not porcelain. Unseen is the apartment-sized W/D set, which is the one I decided to keep. The cow rug is something I found at a gift shop in Arizona -- possibly the big one as you first get to Wickenburg, but this kind of thing was so common there that I'm not sure.

So I can play around with scrap paper wall coverings and accessories with impunity. The one must-do task, when I bring the sewing machine out, is to make that bed a mattress, since its original one has vanished.

The state expected to make the first purchase of small homes by the end of the month and, with the support of local partners, begin construction by the end of the year in an unprecedented effort to build new, free housing for homeless Californians. California Governor Newsom signs new bills into law to further combat homelessness. SACRAMENTO, CA (STL.News) Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced multiple new efforts to address homelessness and provided an update on the state’s work to deliver 1,200 small homes to communities throughout California. Today’s announcements advance the Administration’s multipronged and multi-billion dollar approach, using every tool available to address the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, including moving people in need of assistance off the streets and into housing. What Governor Newsom said: “The state’s homelessness crisis has been decades in the making.  While there’s more work to be done, we are challenging the status quo with new, innovative solutions to get Californians off the streets and into housing. Newsom’s office has been working closely with the city and county of Sacramento to build a tiny home village on Stockton Boulevard that will be a model for the rest of the state.  Residents will be embedded in a community wellness campus specializing in substance abuse disorder treatment and mental health care.  This combination of housing and assertive treatment is the recipe for helping our unhoused neighbors and providing relief to our neighborhoods.” Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg Small Homes Progress: - In July, the Legislature approved, and the Governor signed into law trailer bill legislation allowing more flexibility by the state to streamline this effort and get units on the ground faster. - Sacramento continues to move forward with the selection of two locations: Cal Expo in Sacramento and the newly announced Wellspace on Stockton Blvd. - San Jose has selected and approved a location in partnership with the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority to provide land for all 200 of their small homes. - The state has advanced a procurement process for both the state and local jurisdictions that saves time and cuts red tape to speed up a process that is often time-consuming and costly. - The state has moved quickly to complete contracts to execute the purchase of small homes.  Purchases could begin as early as the end of October. With the support of our local partners, the state anticipates the first groundbreaking to take place before the end of the year. The Governor also signed the following legislative measures to help address homelessness: AB 42 by Assemblymember James Ramos (D-San Bernardino) prohibits a local agency from imposing or enforcing any requirement to install fire sprinklers for temporary dwelling units with a total floor area of less than 250 square feet, meeting specific criteria. AB 785 by Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) provides CEQA exemptions for certain activities undertaken by the City and County of Los Angeles and other eligible public agencies related to affordable housing, low barrier navigation centers, supportive housing, and transitional housing for youth and young adults. AB 1285 by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) requires continuums of care that share geographic boundaries with a city or county using state funding allocated pursuant to round five of the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (HHAP) program or the Encampment Resolution Program (ERP) funding to additionally include in their regionally coordinated homelessness action plans evidence and an explanation of their collaboration with the city or county that specifies how people served through encampment resolution have or will be included in prioritization for permanent housing within coordinated entry systems. AB 1377 by Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Los Angeles) requires applications or planning materials for state funding through the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (HHAP) program appropriated on or after July 1, 2024, to include data and a narrative summary of quantifiable steps that the applicant has taken to improve the delivery of housing and services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness on transit facilities owned and operated by a transit agency. AB 1469 by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D- Santa Clara) authorizes the Santa Clara Valley Water District to assist unsheltered people living along streams, in riparian corridors, or otherwise within the district’s jurisdiction, in consultation with a city or the County of Santa Clara, to provide solutions or improve outcomes for the unsheltered individuals. AB 1607 by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) allows the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency to transfer a portion of the revenue raised by a tax measure to the County of Los Angeles for programs that provide support and services to prevent and combat homelessness. AB 1679 by Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) authorizes Los Angeles County to impose a transaction and use tax that exceeds the 2% statutory limitation and requires all revenue from the tax to be dedicated to addressing and preventing homelessness. SB 91 by Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) eliminates January 1, 2025, sunset date on a provision of state law that exempts certain projects from CEQA that convert a motel, hotel, residential hotel, or hostel to supportive or transitional housing.  SB 91 also extends CEQA streamlining provisions for “environmental leadership transit projects” located within the County of Los Angeles that meet certain specified requirements.
