I’ve got a new webstore! In an effort to transition away from Etsy, I made the decision to start my own store. It’s more work, but I think it’ll be worth the effort. Especially since Etsy refused to take any part in defending fanart (like they claim they do) and delisted some of my listings without any recourse, their recent class action suit prevention nonsense, and putting a reserve on my account for no apparent reason despite having a shop for almost 10 years with a 5-star rating and over 300 sales.

I have bought more than my share of custom "anime themed" tee shirts from Umai; I like them as much or more than Boonslick's wares. They are known for offering short-run Weekly specials and I have bought some of these in the past on impulse. Whether because of desperation or some MBA with a dumb idea, they created a 2nd tier service level called "Umai+" that you have to pay them $10 a month to belong to and this is what you must have now to have exclusive access to their Weekly Specials. Yes, you get to apply that $10 subscription fee to your next purchase in that same month, but they're banking on you NOT doing that if you buy less frequently and pocketing that money. You the potential customer must now PAY for the PRIVILEGE of even viewing the PRODUCT PAGE of the Weekly Exclusive and you cannot even ORDER it unless you are an Umai+ member. They are RESTRICTING SALES of their products from all but paid subscribers....the great unwashed have to make do with their evergreen line of stuff. Maybe some MBA thinks this is a brilliant idea but I think it SUCKS. Your sales of the weekly exclusives are because you turn out a desirable product that EVERYBODY wants. More product in circulation generates interest generates more sales. This subscription scheme seems developed by someone too in love with the smell of their own farts. It's so exclusive you have to prepay in advance to even see the product catalog....FUCK OFF. Why make people jump through extra hoops just to buy your shit? You're just pissing away whatever goodwill you had as a company and alienating your existing customer base who already pay for enough subscriptions to, i dunno, ANIME STREAMING SERVICES, to add yet another bullshit monthly charge to their credit card bill. This is ASININE and I guess if I really wanted a tee I'd subscribe, buy it, then immediately cancel my subscription again....and I bet Umai+ makes it incredibly difficult to actually cancel your subscription, another rapacious aspect of late capitalism I utterly despise. I'm happy with my existing UMAI tee shirts and while sometimes the weekly specials are "meh", other times they are truly great. It's a crap shoot...but not worth it if I have to ante up every month just to gamble. It's a shitty way to do business, even if you are an artist owned collective or whatever. Shame on you, Umai Clothing.
