DuckDuckGo has created a thing called "DuckAssist". Per it's info graphic

DuckAssist is a new feature in our search results that can anonymously generate answers to search queries. To do this, it scans Wikipedia and related sites for relevant content and then uses AI-powered natural language technology to generate a summary of that information. Please note that its responses are currently based on Wikipedia and related content and are not checked for accuracy.

DuckAssist cannot answer follow-up questions, however, we also offer DuckDuckGo AI Chat, which is a private AI-powered chat service that supports chat models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Phrasing your search as a question and in a complete sentence makes DuckAssist more likely to appear and often yields better answers. To adjust how this feature works, or to turn it off, visit DuckAssist Settings.

While I appreciate the option to turn it off this is just unnecessary imo. If it's just using and rephrasing Wikipedia and sources, then its also something I can easily find myself. Why are companies trying to push us all towards a chatbot like AI for information that they wont even guarantee is accurate???????????

library woes: my friend loves philosophy and got put on waitlist for a bunch of stuff her library had in the system. but she never got notifs anything came in. for MONTHS. and then ran into some guy at a coffeeshop who noticed she was reading Kant and said he loved reading philosophy and no one else did so he just. kept. all the philosophy books. from the local library.

that highly depends on how healthy that is...hmmm...

unfortunately the literature does not seem to be very clear on the subject? like there is a bunch of talk about cases of xylophagia / paper-eating-pica but those all seem to be the ones that ended up in a hospital... like eating 2 rolls of toilet paper a day, which had very very grim effects on a woman, or one case of a little girl who both ate a bunch of paper and habitually smelled kerosene which was very unhealthy, but like, the latter probably was the bigger issue?

so on my brief search I couldn't really find any academic sources on how much paper would be safe to eat (not the angle doctors approach the topic from I'm afraid), just that large amounts are bad, and that ingesting toxic stuff is bad

so uh, a little bit is probably fine and valid?, but food amounts of paper are almost certainly not going to be good for your body

that being said my research was very limited, so let me clarify that I am not a medical expert in the slightest; when in doubt ask a professional instead of tumblr mutuals

that post going around with the addition of trying to make chatgpt admit it can't do something is so silly. like. I have a limited understanding of it but I don't think it *knows* its functions and limitations it's a random word generator that was made to be less and less random it's not a fucking INTELLIGENCE it's not lying!!!! it's just saying shit

like maybe I'm tilting at windmills but I think trying to make out chatgpt to be some sort of malignant entity when like. like that tweet where the guy said to it "pretend to be an intelligent thing" and then it did that and then someone asks it "hey can you bounce a ball" and then it goes yeah. yeah I can do that it's not lying!!!!! it's doing what is asked!!!! it's not fucking Jarvis or EDI or cortana or any of that shit it's not a fucking intelligence

Hi guys! The bookbinding continues 😁 my mother's beloved copy of Jane Eyre was falling apart so I redid the casing for her.

The casing is leather since that's my best guess as to what the original was (unless it was a "pleather" sort of deal but the book went through a house fire so it's hard for me to tell). I don't have the equipment to do proper shoulders like the original had plus the pages were too fragile from their severe dehydration to be messing with the spine like that so the leather crimps a little awkwardly when it's opened but I'm imagining that some pressing around with my bone folder while opening it repeatedly will get it into shape. Leather's pretty good at remembering what you tell it.

Two of the signatures had come loose from the original spine stiffener so I restitched those back in place and pulled off all the loose pieces of the old spine stiffener. Then redid the spine cloth and stiffener to recase it.

I was going to stamp the leather for the title and then do foil in the embossing like on the original casing butthe leather ended up being too thin for me to be confident I'd be able to moderate my force enough to not punch through it (I tested it a bunch on some scraps and couldn't get any real consistency since the leather is only like .2-.4mm thick).

Now the fun part of this: I have no idea when this book was printed. There's not a single date in here except the date at the end of the preface and I'm quite certain the book isn't from 1847. My great- grandmother is the one who originally purchased this copy, however, I don't think she had it an insanely long time prior to passing it along to my grandmother who then passed it along to my mother. It's at least 50yrs old but could be more. Publisher was "Books, INC." in the USA, New York.

Anyone have any idea how to find more info on this particular print so I can get a more accurate age?

Update: dug around into the publisher and they weren't called "books inc" until 1946 but the fire it went through was around that time so it was likely at least printed between 1946-1947

Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it's hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.

LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we're still contributing to it.

Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

Hi all! With the resurrection of my favorite game I never got the chance to play, I’m resurrecting my favorite hunt for lost media that was never found (yet?!)

Back in the day, a kind soul uploaded two extended variations of the song "Trilobite Me" onto youtube—a slower one, and a more lively/fast-paced one. You can hear them played in some of the official overview videos ( Here one is in Zandora’s. )

These uploads are now gone, and I didn’t have the foresight to save them. I’ve regretted it every day since! If any of you still have them floating around on your disk drive, I would be eternally grateful. Thank you!!

#new rough idea for kitty is that she originates from a woman (name of catherine) who sold her likeness in every form--#--to Some aspect of the URCR including brainscans and thus kitty acts as the base for the bog standard--#--test tube grown URCR person not based off of anybody else. acts as a standardized worker (different scans preloaded w the--#--necessary knowledge to perform different jobs) and straight up property of the corp. also a way modified brainscan acts as the basis for-#--the ai assistant that Current kitty inhabits. after catherine dies her ghost is able to haunt any Kitty Instance and pilot her for as--#--long as she desires (and then im torn between the idea of each kitty instance being a fully individual person of her own OR there being--#--some weird semi hivemind thing going on. idk !!!!!) which is what she does with the basic websearch assistant that williams interacts-#--with. catherine Cannot go where kitty is not and after hundreds of years stuck around [unnamed main URCR planet. lol] she--#--jumps on the opportunity for something NEW and absolutely delights in it #^ a whole lot of this would go unspoken abt in the west+williams thing beyond little nods (a bit of the excess genetic material meant to--#--test tube up a number of kitties on the colonization ship (CS HAMARY.
