Windows Server 2012 R2 End-of-Life
New Post has been published on https://www.aheliotech.com/blog/windows-server-2012-r2-end-of-life/
Windows Server 2012 R2 End-of-Life
What Does “End-of-Life” Really Mean?
The short answer is, after October 2023, businesses still using Microsoft Server 2012 R2 will no longer receive critical security updates and patches. At this point, AhelioTech is recommending any clients using Microsoft Server 2012 R2 update your server operating system now.
When Does Windows Server 2012 R2 Go End-of-Life?
Unlike its higher-profile software offerings, such as Microsoft 365, Microsoft has a specific lifecycle for its Windows Server products.
More specifically, these operating systems are released under what is known as Microsoft’s Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC).  In a nutshell, this means that each product is supported for 10 years: the first five of which are known as  mainstream support, and the second five known as  extended support.
As of October 2018, Server 2012 R2 entered its “extended support” phase, which will end in October 2023.
Why is This a Problem for Your Organization?
Cyberattackers know this timeline too! It is almost certain that cyberattackers will be waiting patiently for the product’s extended support to end, at which point they will do all they can to find exploits.
If you continue running the server operating system, you are exposing your data and your network to potential breaches.
What does that really mean?  Mainstream Support vs. Extending Support
This is a simple breakdown of mainstream support vs. extended support for products such as the Windows Server range of operating systems:
Mainstream support is essentially the glory days of a Microsoft product. It is the first five years of the product’s lifespan, and it is being continually updated with new features, service packs, updates, fixes, and more. Microsoft also offers real-time support (i.e. phone support) during this phase.  The earlier you invest in a product during its mainstream support phase, the more you’ll get out of it in the long-term – up to a decade, if you play your cards right.
Extended support refers to the latter five years of product support per the LTSC system.  It is no longer the focus of the Microsoft team and will likely have been succeeded by at least one more product in the meantime. During extended support, customers will only receive critical security updates and reliability patches. Non-security hotfixes will not be delivered unless the customer has an extended support agreement with Microsoft – and that comes at a cost.
What happens when Extended Support ends?
The most important thing to remember about extended support is that, once it is expired, the product will be almost entirely unprotected by Microsoft.  So, after October 2023, Windows Server 2012 R2 will no longer receive any security updates or critical patches for key exploits.  You won’t even be able to pay for support anymore, as you can during extended support – the product is simply unsupported going forward.
You do not want to leave your organization exposed to cyberattacks.  It is time to upgrade now to prevent any network breaches.
What are the next steps?
Start budgeting and planning for either replacement hardware or cloud server option.  Contact AhelioTech at [email protected] to start planning your server replacement project in 2023.

Just found out that Microsoft has been added as a primary target for boycotting by BDS. This includes their software, games, and services.
I'm currently on a Windows system and can't hop immediately to another OS as some of my programs are still windows exclusive. Almost all Windows Telemetry is disabled on my computer. My plan is to later on switch to Linux after finding alternatives or at least find some compatibility with Linux for these programs. Not to mention backup alternatives.
No Edge, switched to Firefox and Vivaldi. Fuck Copilot.
And while BDS did ask for people to stop buying Microsoft games, there is some small leeway for those who have already bought them before the boycott: you can keep playing as long as you don't buy future Microsoft products or games (source). This includes micro-transactions, don't buy them. Minecraft Realms and Minecoins, too.
Since I own Minecraft (bought back in 2012), this one hurts a bit since I started back playing it as an escape. Have been avoiding Realms and Minecoins, but I'm still concerned about Telemetry. I can avoid Minecraft's two official desktop launchers - one from the Microsoft store and the other as direct download from Mojang's site. There are alternative launchers (including cracked versions) that allow you to continue playing Minecraft without Microsoft "seeing" you playing it, even without an account. Look for no account registration launchers or offline launchers like UltimMC or Prism Launcher. Avoid TLauncher because it may contain malware. You will miss out on servers, though.
There's also the No-Telemetry mod if you still want to play on either of the official launchers or if you are using a launcher that still requires an account.
Vintage Story, Luanti, VoxeLibre (mod for Luanti) are good alternatives if you want something Minecraft-like but completely disconnected from Microsoft. Mods for Luanti can be found here. Mods for Vintage Story can be found here.
Here's a post on what you can do if you are looking for alternatives to Microsoft's software and tools.
Kinda of a reminder, You can participate in small parts of a boycott if there's some things you aren't ready to move on or if you can't find replacements. Like, if the only thing you have done is letting go of is Edge and Minecraft, but not Windows, that's fine. If it's just Edge, that's fine. Just do your best!

A nostalgic hangout game…? (2/3)
In the night . . .
Tumblr media
They wake up, in the middle of the night.
They heard a crash, or… Something.
They get out of bed, and look through each window, trying to find out what it was.
They spot what seems to be… Metal? Sticking out of the ground.
They go to their door, but, they notice that the note, has been changed.
“Leave?”
They hesitate for a moment, remembering what their friend, the postman said.
They decide to go outside and investigate.
They look around, just in case for the wolves. But, nothing. At least not now…
They approach the… Hole, and the metal thing.
They notice something… There’s… Glitches?
As they get too close however, the color of the world changes. More… Brighter. And there’s this… Sound.
They hear something, someone, say something. But, they can’t figure out what was said.
Everything goes dark for them.
.
.
.
December 11th. 2012…?
They wake, in their home again.
They hesitate, before looking around, everything seems normal…
They go to their couch, turning their TV on for a while…
Until they hear a vehicle outside.
They go to their door, looking at the note again. It’s the same as last day… “Rule: Never leave at night.”
They hesitate, before going outside, meeting their friend again…
But… They don’t see them.
(A/N: probably just a glitch I came upon, since the postman didn’t appear like he used to the 2nd day…)
They glance around, frowning.
They turn back to their house, and spot something… Someone. Standing by their window.
They hesitate, before approaching it.
It disappears, like it wasn’t there at all.
They go inside, and look over to where the figure stood.
There’s an arrow on the floor. Pointing at the TV.
They hesitate, before approaching their TV.
They don’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary, before they hesitate,
They take off the screen off, only to be met with a camera. Pointed straight at them.
They drop the screen out of shock and sudden fear.
They see notes taped within.
They were about to reach out for it, before flinching, when a vehicle honks, just outside their house.
They look outside, and see the vehicle.
They rush to their door, before exiting and approaching their friend.
They talk, the same as usual.
Being reminded of the… Day they just were in…?
They wave goodbye to their friend, before going back inside their home.
They go to bed, and lay there, thinking for a moment, before sleep envelops them.
But… They wake again, hearing something, that sounds like a radio.
They look around, and see a radio, in front of their mirror.
They get out of their bed and approach the radio with hesitation.
They interact with it.
They hear something like humming.
And a… Person?
Everything goes dark for them once again.
.
.
.
They’re awoken again, inside their home.
They look around, everything seems… Exactly like the day and night before… But… Now there are notes on their mirror.
They approach their mirror with some hesitation.
They pause, seeing a… Reflection. Of themselves.
They hesitate, for they know they’re alone.
They approach the mirror once more, before flinching when a honk comes from outside.
They look towards the window near their door.
The same vehicle.
They glance back at the mirror, and look at the notes.
The top note reads; “There are so many more who do the same.”
Whilst the bottom one reads; “Find me. I’ll buy you time tonight.”
The notes are glitching.
They hesitate for a moment longer, before going outside. Not even bothered to read the note by the door. It reads the same either way…
They approach their friend and talk.
This time, their friend says something else.
“I’m sorry.” They start off. “I called them here to reset the server,” They pause, “You keep wanting more, maybe this reset will shut you up for good-“ they get cut off, as they’re impaled by, spikes, from the ground.
The text on their vehicle changes.
‘ Roblox: Powering Imagination ‘
To;
‘ R U N ‘
A woman’s scream. The world glitches, before the vehicle, and their friend disappears.
They rush back inside, glancing around.
Their items, their furniture, gone. Even the note by the door is gone!
The only thing left behind, in the middle of their house, is a note.
They approach the note, being met with the familiar glitch.
They look around, seeing that there’s now a chair blocking their door, and their windows boarded up.
They look down at the note again, it reads; “Stay inside. I’ll fight them off and make a clear path for you to escape this experience.”
They look outside their windows, and see a portal, with… Robloxians exiting it.
They talk through a radio, talking to them;
"Player, you have broken Roblox code 217. The Metaverse and the RIS is intervening due to unknown activity in experience 4816044149. Please (unintelligible) as we approach your designated house on the blockspace."
After announcing that, the robloxians approach their house.
The world goes dark for them.
“Hey, hey, halt!” One of the robloxians they assume, speaks.
“Prepare to die.” Something replies simply.
“Open fire, open fire!” The same robloxian they assume, says.
Gunfire, occasionally being breached by a blade, carving through flesh, and the occasional flatline can be heard…
They regain their sight, they quickly look outside, and see… The robloxians… Impaled by spikes… Just like their friend.
They glance towards their door. The chair and door vanishes. Completely.
They don’t even hesitate, quickly rushing out of their once safe and cozy home.
Humming, and explosions…
They run, and run, they see cracks forming in the sky.
A portal appears. Just like ones those robloxians came from.
They run towards it, not daring to look back.
Darkness.
That’s all they see…
Before, what seems to be a ball of colors, and white can be seen, for a split few seconds…
Darkness.
Just before they get chucked through what seems to be a rainbow tunnel, before once again…
Everything turns dark, yet again.

The Legacy and Lasting Impact of Windows Server 2012
Tumblr media
Introduction
In the world of enterprise-level computing, Microsoft has been a constant presence for decades, providing robust and reliable solutions for businesses of all sizes. One of their significant contributions to the server operating system landscape was Windows Server 2012, a platform that left an indelible mark on the industry. In this article, we'll delve into the legacy and lasting impact of Windows Server 2012.
Windows Server 2012: A Brief Overview
Windows Server 2012, often referred to as "Win2012," was released in September 2012 as the successor to Windows Server 2008 R2. It was a part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, sharing the same core architecture as its predecessor. However, it brought significant improvements and introduced innovative features that made it a popular choice for businesses worldwide.
1. Enhanced Virtualization Capabilities
One of the standout features of Windows Server 2012 was its remarkable enhancement in virtualization capabilities. It introduced Hyper-V 3.0, Microsoft's virtualization platform, which offered better scalability, more advanced management tools, and support for multi-tenancy. This allowed businesses to consolidate their servers, reduce hardware costs, and streamline IT operations.
2. Improved Security
Security has always been a paramount concern in the world of IT, and Windows Server 2012 addressed this concern with several important features. It included BitLocker drive encryption for safeguarding data at rest and introduced Dynamic Access Control, which provided fine-grained control over file access and permissions. Additionally, the introduction of the Security Configuration Wizard made it easier to configure and audit security settings.
3. Cloud Integration
As cloud computing gained traction, Windows Server 2012 embraced this trend by integrating seamlessly with Microsoft's cloud platform, Azure. This integration allowed businesses to build hybrid cloud solutions, enabling them to leverage the power of the cloud while maintaining control over their on-premises infrastructure.
4. Improved Remote Access
Windows Server 2012 introduced DirectAccess, a feature that simplified and improved remote access for users. It eliminated the need for traditional VPNs, providing a more seamless and secure connection experience for remote workers.
5. Scalability and Performance
Win2012 brought significant improvements in terms of scalability and performance. It supported up to 64 virtual processors and 1 terabyte of memory for virtual machines, ensuring that businesses could handle increasingly demanding workloads with ease.
The Lasting Impact
Although Windows Server 2012 has been succeeded by newer versions, its impact on the IT world continues to be felt to this day. Many businesses still rely on this robust operating system for their critical workloads, and its legacy is evident in the evolution of subsequent Windows Server editions. Here are some of the lasting impacts:
1. Influence on Subsequent Versions
The innovations introduced in Windows Server 2012 served as the foundation for subsequent iterations of the operating system. Features like improved virtualization, enhanced security, and cloud integration have become standard expectations for modern server platforms.
2. Paving the Way for Hybrid Cloud
The seamless integration of Windows Server 2012 with Azure set the stage for the rise of hybrid cloud solutions. Today, hybrid cloud deployments are a common strategy for organizations seeking the flexibility of the cloud while retaining control over their infrastructure.
3. Enhanced Security Practices
The focus on security in Windows Server 2012 has had a lasting impact on how organizations approach cybersecurity. The principles of least privilege and fine-grained access control introduced in Win2012 have become best practices in securing data and resources.
Conclusion
Windows Server 2012 may have reached its end of life in 2023, but its legacy endures in the world of enterprise computing. Its impact on virtualization, security, cloud integration, and remote access continues to shape how businesses design and manage their IT infrastructure. As we look back on the enduring influence of Windows Server 2012, we can appreciate the role it played in advancing the capabilities of server operating systems and setting the stage for the modern data center.
