Windtalkers (2002)
My rating: 5/10
It's fine, I guess - the war bits are appropriately hellish, the male bonding is fine, if nowhere near homoerotic enough (there isn't even a volleyball game), and the Native American stuff, well... feels kind of noble savage-y (so many flutes in that soundtrack), but I guess by 2002 standards it was at least An Attempt.

AND ANOTHER THING
Murtagh spends like 200 pages being said lonely and disenfranchised from humans elves and dwarves due to some war crimes (he didn't mean it! Couldn't help it! Enslaved against his will! But he still carries guilt and everyone blames him anyway!)
But then he earns the loyalty and support of werecats, a race that's powerful and cool but sorta on the fringes, and becomes blood Brothers with an urgal (Uvek Windtalker, absolute GOAT), a race that's pretty much universally despised and mistrusted by most of alagaesia for the front half of the series.
Like yes yes yes give me the most patchwork random assortment of a found family for my blorbo. I want dinner at Naduada's table with urgals and werecats and dragons and a random child with an enchanted fork and taste for blood. It's perfect.
Also I want someone to give Uvek a dragon if eragon said urgals could be riders 👏 GIVE 👏 UVEK👏 DRAGONNNN👏👏👏👏

Here is Uvek together with Kitsû.
It's still a WIP. I'm not sure when I will be able to finish it. But I wanted to share Uvek... he turned out really well 🤭

Things I wish I could animate but don't have the skill level for:
Open Arms from Epic: the Musical set to Murtagh at the Dragon Rider Academy.
Odysseus -> Murtagh
Polites -> Eragon
Lotus Eaters -> Elves and Dwarves that carry grudges against Murtagh; Urgals at end of song
First verse: Eragon seeing Murtagh's nervousness being in the same place as elves and dwarves. Murtagh says he's fine. Eragon tries to alleviate Murtagh's fears by reminding him that he's safe here under his and Saphira's protection.
First Refrain: He also advises if Murtagh shows the denizens of Mount Arngor who he is as a person, they might be more willing to give him a chance.
Second Verse: Murtagh gets into a tense moment with someone. He explains that he and Thorn are there to escort Uvek who is the new Dragon Rider (Please let this happen in canon!) and learn from the Eldunari. His crimes during the war are brought up. He tries to explain what his perspective was like while acknowledging the harm he has done. Eragon tries to keep it from escalating. Thankfully it doesn't get to the point of blows. Just harsh words.
Second Refrain: Eragon's relieved that things didn't get to blows. He's optimistic attitude is a little heightened since he's trying to exert hope into his older half brother.
Third verse: Murtagh explaining to Eragon the people hate him with good reason but because of his father's history and his own crimes, no one is going to give him a chance and that if they do, he has to watch to make sure it's not a ploy to get his to lower his guard.
Fourth verse: That night Eragon talks with the Urgals to see what they think of Murtagh. He's noticed that Murtagh and Uvek seem to have a good relationship, but hopes the others will be allow Murtagh to be around them.
To Eragon's relief and delight Muratgh is welcomed into the Urgal circle by Uvek (needs a slight nudge from Eragon who accompanies him) and the others get a chance to get to know him. Some of the Urgals share his opinion on Galbatorix and being under his thumb.
Third refrain: Eragon watches Murtagh laugh and get comfortable amongst the Urgals. He's happy for his older half brother. Seeing Murtagh in goods hands, he relaxes himself to enjoy the evening. Murtagh admits to himself that he's making some progress and feels safe and relieved that at least some of the denizens of Mount Angnor are willing to give him a chance.
Eragon: In his mind
This life is amazing when you greet it with open arms
I see in your face, there is so much guilt inside your heart
So why not replace it and light up the world
Here's how to start:
Greet the world with open arms
Greet the world with open arms
Murtagh, smiling
Greet the world with open arms
Eragon, smiling
You can relax, my friend
