“You don’t need to lie to me. You hate him, don’t you? I see it, kitty cat. That face of yours when you’re on his arm? It ain’t the face of a broad who's happy to be there.”

He was right, too. Although you had to wonder how many times others had witnessed your carefully placed facade slip. Then again, you hadn’t been stepping out all too long with Tommy Shelby. You didn’t intend on doing so either.

Tommy didn’t remember you from school. He had no recollection over how he’d made you feel about yourself as a little girl, the name calling, the teasing, the shoving you around. “Boys will be boys, my sweet”, your father had always said. Your mother had taken a much less blasé approach.

“Darling girl of mine, boys will not be boys. Boys will be however we let them behave. If that little shit continues to act like this, wallop him one.”

While you appreciated her stance, you never did give him the aforementioned walloping. Until now, in your decision to make him pay for being your playground tormentor, your bully. Some might call it immature of you not to be able to move on from it, but truly, Tommy Shelby has done more to hurt you than any other.

It didn’t stop in the playground.

The growth of The Shelby Company Ltd, with its wings spreading like an albatross across the coal-black suburbs of Birmingham led to your father being put out of work, your brother being recruited and then executed as a Peaky Blinder and your family losing everything. Tommy was so lost within the vast vortex of his own ego that he didn’t even recognise you, by neither sight nor name when you approached him one evening in The Garrison, your charm amped up, your plan set into action.

You would make him fall in love with you, you would toy with his heartstrings and then, finally, you would rip them to pieces. Just like he did to your life. Just like he always had.

Your plan? It worked. Effortlessly.

Every time he called to court you, you would exit the door of your lodgings looking pristine, ready to be wined and dined, your place upon the arm of the city’s most prolific gangster a spot coveted by many. It never did fail to make bitter fire lick your insides, though, while other women burned with envious ire. Your revulsion ran deep, but you had to confess; at least he was pretty to look at. At least he was a talented and sensual lover.

You never allowed him in too much, though, and it was the cleverness, the assertive aloofness of your nature that had the poor fool coming back for more every time.

“Why don’t you ever stay with me, sweetheart?” he asks you on one such night, as you pull yourself back into your clothes.

Looking away from the garter clasp you’re about to affix to your stocking, you see it there in his eyes. Pleading. Longing. The desire to spend the entire night curled around you in a warm, loving embrace.

“I like my own bed.”

He tuts, reaching for his cigarette. “You always say that. Don't even let me stop over there with you either.”

“I like my own bed alone.”

“And what when we’re married, eh?” he questions, exhaling a thick plume of smoke into the dark of the room. “Will you let me share a bed with you then, or are we to be like an old-fashioned Victorian couple, same bedroom, single beds?” His eyes glint at you, shifting to sit up a little. “That’s a bit puritan for a girl who likes being fucked as dirty as you, love.”

The urge to punch that smug, pretty face of his. Buttoning your blouse, you reach for your coat and pull it on, picking up your bag and then leaning to press a kiss upon his lips. “I’ll say goodnight now, Tommy. Let you go to sleep and dream of me.”

He isn’t used to not getting his own way, and lord, how it shows. He reaches for your wrist, grasping you in a hard clutch, your mind flashing back to the playground. He’d do this while kicking your shins and mocking you. “Don’t play games with me, sweetheart. You won’t like it when I play them back.”

You smirk, and the devil’s fire flashes through his eyes. “Is that a threat, darling?”

“It’s a bloody promise, love, and you know it is. Might have to tie you to this bed next time, stop you from escaping on me.” He smiles then, something boyish in him as he tilts his head, pulling you down into a soft kiss. “I love you, even if you are a bloody temptress.”

“Love you, too. Goodnight.”

Leaving the bedroom, you saunter down the stairs and into the lounge, going into his jacket pocket and removing the keys to the building he runs his legitimate business from, Out of your purse, you remove the soft ball of clay you’ve stashed away wrapped in paper, flattening it with your palm before pressing each key into it.

With those imprints taken, you visit the local foundry the following day, asking for a set of keys to be made to those exact impressions.

“Ahh, nice, easy little job this, bab,” the foreman informs you, removing his cap to scratch his balding head as he takes the lump of now dried clay. “Have ‘em ready for ya by close.”

After returning later that evening, you have within your grasp the tools you require to facilitate the final piece of your plan, the last little detail being delivered to you by a third party, one who after arriving from New York saw quite clearly how much use you could be to him, getting close enough to ruin Tommy Shelby and all he held dear.

Walking through the bar of The Grand Hotel, you slide into a seat beside the handsome Italian waiting for you, placing the keys into his hand.

“You did good, doll,” he drawls, eyeing you appreciatively. “Here.” Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out a roll of bills, handing them to you with a wink before taking your hand and kissing it. “If you’re ever in New York in the future, please, don’t think twice about looking me up.”

Of course, Luca Changretta could have simply broken into the building he required access to, but Tommy is a shrewd operator. He would notice even the most carefully picked lock, and the plan was always for him not to see it coming. When The Shelby Company Ltd explodes into a ball of fire, both Tommy and Arthur within it, you know he never saw it coming.

After all, he never truly saw you.

notes: no warnings, other than the fact that this was written in 20 minutes max. fluff. chrollos a loser (again)

"I'm telling you..." You release an exasperated sigh, "It tastes like hand sanitizer at best." Your fervent pleas are almost running dry, no longer opting for softer approaches on expressing your displeasure of being forced to taste test wine in the middle of the night. You glace at the the red liquid swirling in your glass and immediately wince as the aftertaste you had to endure a few moments ago suddenly comes back to memory- an odd concoction of acidic, bitter, sour, and sharp resulting in a terrible pang to your taste buds. As attractive the deep, dark shade of red looks, it does not taste as good as its visuals intend.

"...I see." Chrollo says, his compliance suspicious to you. He does not seem that all amused that he's practically wasting what seems to be the most high-end wines on you. Five bottles of wine- all he had assured would be your favorite as it is his- situated on top of the cold dining room table. All each 'exquisite wine' have earned your ire, each more than the last.

"Perhaps you'd prefer ones of the medium-bodied wines instead." Chrollo smiles as he turns around to one of the cupboards and you groan. You're in your pyjamas, sleep mask shoved back messily creating all sorts of odd curls and spikes of your hair, and you don't know where your other slipper went so you're barefoot on your left foot. Your irritation only grows by each moment you're not warm and engulfed under heavy blankets, under dim lights and some light music in your ears. Instead you're in this cold, annoyingly bright room with the sour, sharp stench of wine stabbing your nasals.

"Chrollo, please. I know your last name's Lucilfer or whatever but don't live up to it." If you had more energy, you would climb over the table and (try to) strangle the man. But all you can do right now is amp up the complaints, which you don't have to guess are entering his ear and escaping the other. "God, it's almost one the morning. Don't you have an... Oh, I don't know, a heist or something due by 12 tomorrow?"

"Yes." He turns around, two more bottles of wine in his hand. You instinctively cover your glass in caution. And the vermin has the audacity to chuckle. "I'm thinking of heisting wine houses."

You think about smashing every single bottle he brings back on his head.

NYX #1 Thoughts:

It was alright, very Kamala/Ms. Marvel and Sophie-focused. It was a decent set up of the premise, and I'll keep an eye on it.

Spoilers:

The Krakoan is Julian Keller/Hellion as everyone called it. Just in case anyone missed the leaks on Twitter.

Him and the rest of Cuckoos are apparently working with Empath, and the current implication is that he may be amping up and/or twisting their post-Krakoa emotions.

Anole, we didn't see much of, other than he's a bartender now.

Not only is David teaching, but he's also a tenure-track professor.

As someone who works for an American university, I'd be so curious to see how that happened. I mean, at least for the department I work for (very research-heavy stem field), its a LOT to negotiate tenure-track, even with years of experience and a Ph.D. Its like a 3-4 day marathon of presentations, wining-and-dining, meetings after meetings, tours, and a red-eye flight back home. You basically gotta meet everyone in our department and not only show that you know what you're talking about, but also that you won't be an asshole to the established professors (I know this, because I'm the one assisting in organizing everything and making sure the right faculty shows up on time to give a lab tour to the applicant, lol)

I think in some areas, you can get away with an M.S. degree for tenure, but in most cases, its Ph.D.

And that doesn't even mean you are guaranteed to get tenure. There's a whole other review process for that.

Anyway, Sophie is right to call it out here. It does kinda feel like a hand-out. I wonder if that will come into play later?

I'd like to see David's point of view first, though. Maybe there's a secret plot where some of the faculty are evil and its an anti-mutant trap to lure him into a false sense of security. But he's too smart for that and plays them. I don't know.

Or maybe he got his P.h.D. That'd be dope.

I don't trust David's new boyfriend. He hasn't said much yet, but I don't trust him.

This issue is heavily focused on Kamala's point of view, and strongly features Sophie as well. It makes sense, as Kamala is the "newer mutant" in a sense, and serves well to introduce the reader to the setting and potentional storylines to follow.

Sophie and Kamala also have a budding friendship, and I think it's very cute.

I think the next issue at least is supposed to shift to Laura's point of view.

We also don't see too much of Laura, and she didn't appear to be in the college class? Maybe she joins later, or is a guest speaker, I don't know. OR maybe she's going undercover?!?!

We did get this pretty image on the opening page:

Laura only runs into Kamala while she's investigating a mutant terrorist attack.

I love her new look so much. It's very fashionable and actually makes her look distinct from Logan while she's still clearly a Wolverine. Props to the designer.

And now Marvel needs to free Akihiro from Hellverine psuedo-death-ressurection and give him a unique outfit and/or codename too. Thank you.

Laura really only says this though:

I don't know how I feel about her characterization here. I mean, its not the worst thing, but it lacks context for me.

I mean, what is Laura doing? Where is Gabby? Is Akihiro still dead and she's surly with grief? (because Hellverine hasn't finished yet and we don't know how that will end) Does she feel like she has to pick up the pieces and play hero because Logan fucked off to the Canadian Wilderness again?

I have many questions about my girl and her general well-being.

In general, I'm currently on the fence about her characterization. It could go either way.

I suppose we'll have to wait until next issue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In summary, it was a decent set-up. I read the X-Men Monday interview, so there was nothing that surprised me. Art is very good.

Also, this is me being a grumpy old bastard, but I hate the QR code pages they're doing now. Just print the damn page. I tried the scanner on both my phone and tablet, and it kept redirecting me to a broken link and I get a "500 Internal Error" message. I have no idea what that page is about. I personally don't like this concept of secret QR code pages and is irritating.

For digital reading, its more okay, but I also buy physical copies. I don't want to have to whip out my phone and/or tablet just for a gimmick to get the full issue. And who knows if the website eventually goes defunt years from now and then the QR codes are rendered useless. Then what?

2) i’m a firm believer (in my universe anyways) he’s slow in everything he does bc he can’t make it obvious it’s him. he needs you to trust him still. he’d obviously know you’re going on said date, bc you told him but he didn’t really think you’d full send do it until he’s standing on his balcony and sees his pretty Doll dressed up with a stupid looking man opening a car door for her. that’s when he’d start scheming. he’s gonna take love bombing to another level. and when he hears the date went pretty shitty? oh girl he’s amping it up a lil more. so you’re getting gifts and letters AND Noah’s gonna wine and dine his little Dollie. he’s gonna actively make you love him, need him really. until he knows he’s got you wrapped around his finger and you’re his now. It becomes kind of a fun challenge of trying to get a reaction out of Bastien; showing up to the clinic in more revealing outfits and amping up the flirting and touchiness.

objectively he is charming in less obvious ways - when you see underneath his carefully built walls and see that he really cares for his patients, that he will bring Élise a cup of tea when they've been both working too long, that he does have the genuine warmest smile that crinkles in his eyes every time

Wolfgang: what to say that i haven't said already, they've lived a long life, they know what they want and how to get it, they're shameless - charm comes very easy to them, so easy it's sometimes nauseatingly difficult to actually be vulnerable and honest without hiding behind a smile and a wink
