Boeing’s deliberately defective fleet of flying sky-wreckage
Tumblr media
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me TOMORROW (May 2) in WINNIPEG, then Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), Tartu, Estonia, and beyond!
Tumblr media
Boeing's 787 "Dreamliner" is manufactured far from the company's Seattle facility, in a non-union shop in Charleston, South Carolina. At that shop, there is a cage full of defective parts that have been pulled from production because they are not airworthy.
Hundreds of parts from that Material Review Segregation Area (MRSA) were secretly pulled from that cage and installed on aircraft that are currently plying the world's skies. Among them, sections 47/48 of a 787 – the last four rows of the plane, along with its galley and rear toilets. As Moe Tkacik writes in her excellent piece on Boeing's lethally corrupt culture of financialization and whistleblower intimidation, this is a big ass chunk of an airplane, and there's no way it could go missing from the MRSA cage without a lot of people knowing about it:
https://prospect.org/infrastructure/transportation/2024-04-30-whistleblower-laws-protect-lawbreakers/
More: MRSA parts are prominently emblazoned with red marks denoting them as defective and unsafe. For a plane to escape Boeing's production line and find its way to a civilian airport near you with these defective parts installed, many people will have to see and ignore this literal red flag.
The MRSA cage was a special concern of John "Swampy" Barnett, the Boeing whistleblower who is alleged to have killed himself in March. Tkacik's earlier profile of Swampy paints a picture of a fearless, stubborn engineer who refused to go along to get along, refused to allow himself to become inured to Boeing's growing culture of profits over safety:
https://prospect.org/infrastructure/transportation/2024-03-28-suicide-mission-boeing/
Boeing is America's last aviation company and its single largest exporter. After the company was allowed to merge with its rival McDonnell-Douglas in 1997, the combined company came under MDD's notoriously financially oriented management culture. MDD CEO Harry Stonecipher became Boeing's CEO in the early 2000s. Stonecipher was a protege of Jack Welch, the man who destroyed General Electric with cuts to quality and workforce and aggressive union-busting, a classic Mafia-style "bust-out" that devoured the company's seed corn and left it a barren wasteland:
https://qz.com/1776080/how-the-mcdonnell-douglas-boeing-merger-led-to-the-737-max-crisis
Post-merger, Boeing became increasingly infected with MDD's culture. The company chased cheap, less-skilled labor to other countries and to America's great onshore-offshore sacrifice zone, the "right-to-work" American south, where bosses can fire uppity workers who balked at criminal orders, without the hassle of a union grievance.
Stonecipher was succeeded by Jim "Prince Jim" McNerney, ex-3M CEO, another Jack Welch protege (Welch spawned a botnet of sociopath looters who seized control of the country's largest, most successful firms, and drove them into the ground). McNerney had a cute name for the company's senior engineers: "phenomenally talented assholes." He created a program to help his managers force these skilled workers – everyone a Boeing who knew how to build a plane – out of the company.
McNerney's big idea was to get rid of "phenomenally talented assholes" and outsource the Dreamliner's design to Boeing's suppliers, who were utterly dependent on the company and could easily be pushed around (McNerney didn't care that most of these companies lacked engineering departments). This resulted in a $80b cost overrun, and a last-minute scramble to save the 787 by shipping a "cleanup crew" from Seattle to South Carolina, in the hopes that those "phenomenally talented assholes" could save McNerney's ass.
Swampy was part of the cleanup crew. He was terrified by what he saw there. Boeing had convinced the FAA to let them company perform its own inspections, replacing independent government inspectors with Boeing employees. The company would mark its own homework, and it swore that it wouldn't cheat.
Boeing cheated. Swampy dutifully reported the legion of safety violations he witnessed and was banished to babysit the MRSA, an assignment his managers viewed as a punishment that would isolate Swampy from the criminality he refused to stop reporting. Instead, Swampy audited the MRSA, and discovered that at least 420 defective aviation components had gone missing from the cage, presumably to be installed in planes that were behind schedule. Swampy then audited the keys to the MRSA and learned that hundreds of keys were "floating around" the Charleston facility. Virtually anyone could liberate a defective part and install it into an airplane without any paper trail.
Swampy's bosses had a plan for dealing with this. They ordered Swampy to "pencil whip" the investigations of 420 missing defective components and close the cases without actually figuring out what happened to them. Swampy refused.
Instead, Swampy took his concerns to a departmental meeting where 12 managers were present and announced that "if we can’t find them, any that we can’t find, we need to report it to the FAA." The only response came from a supervisor, who said, "We’re not going to report anything to the FAA."
The thing is, Swampy wasn't just protecting the lives of the passengers in those defective aircraft – he was also protecting Boeing employees. Under Sec 38 of the US Criminal Code, it's a 15-year felony to make any "materially false writing, entry, certification, document, record, data plate, label, or electronic communication concerning any aircraft or space vehicle part."
(When Swampy told a meeting that he took this seriously because "the paperwork is just as important as the aircraft" the room erupted in laughter.)
Swampy sent his own inspectors to the factory floor, and they discovered "dozens of red-painted defective parts installed on planes."
Swampy blew the whistle. How did the 787 – and the rest of Boeing's defective flying turkeys – escape the hangar and find their way into commercial airlines' fleets? Tkacik blames a 2000 whistleblower law called AIR21 that:
creates such byzantine procedures, locates adjudication power in such an outgunned federal agency, and gives whistleblowers such a narrow chance of success that it effectively immunizes airplane manufacturers, of which there is one in the United States, from suffering any legal repercussions from the testimony of their own workers.
By his own estimation, Swampy was ordered to commit two felonies per week for six years. Tkacik explains that this kind of operation relies on a culture of ignorance – managers must not document their orders, and workers must not be made aware of the law. Whistleblowers like Swampy, who spoke the unspeakable, were sidelined (an assessment by one of Swampy's managers called him "one of the best" and finished that "leadership would give hugs and high fives all around at his departure").
Multiple whistleblowers were singled out for retaliation and forced departure. William Hobek, a quality manager who refused to "pencil whip" the missing, massive 47-48 assembly that had wandered away from the MRSA cage, was given a "weak" performance review and fired despite an HR manager admitting that it was bogus.
Another quality manager, Cynthia Kitchens, filed an ethics complaint against manager Elton Wright who responded to her persistent reporting of defects on the line by shoving her against a wall and shouting that Boeing was "a good ol’ boys’ club and you need to get on board." Kitchens was fired in 2016. She had cancer at the time.
John Woods, yet another quality engineer, was fired after he refused to sign off on a corner-cutting process to repair a fuselage – the FAA later backed up his judgment.
Then there's Sam Salehpour, the 787 quality engineer whose tearful Congressional testimony described more corner-cutting on fuselage repairs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP0xhIe1LFE
Salehpour's boss followed the Boeing playbook to the letter: Salehpour was constantly harangued and bullied, and he was isolated from colleagues who might concur with his assessment. When Salehpour announced that he would give Congressional testimony, his car was sabotaged under mysterious circumstances.
It's a playbook. Salehpour's experience isn't unusual at Boeing. Two other engineers, working on the 787 Organization Designation Authorization, held up production by insisting that the company fix the planes' onboard navigation computers. Their boss gave them a terrible performance review, admitting that top management was furious at the delays and had ordered him to punish the engineers. The engineers' union grievance failed, with Boeing concluding that this conduct – which they admitted to – didn't rise to the level of retaliation.
As Tkacik points out, these engineers and managers that Boeing targeted for intimidation and retaliation are the very same staff who are supposed to be performing inspections of behalf of the FAA. In other words, Boeing has spent years attacking its own regulator, with total impunity.
But it's not just the FAA who've failed to take action – it's also the DOJ, who have consistently declined to bring prosecutions in most cases, and who settled the rare case they did bring with "deferred prosecution agreements." This pattern was true under Trump's DOJ and continued under Biden's tenure. Biden's prosecutors have been so lackluster that a federal judge "publicly rebuked the DOJ for failing to take seriously the reputational damage its conduct throughout the Boeing case was inflicting on the agency."
Meanwhile, there's the AIR21 rule, a "whistleblower" rule that actually protects Boeing from whistleblowers. Under AIR21, an aviation whistleblower who is retaliated against by their employer must first try to resolve their problem internally. If that fails, the whistleblower has only one course of action: file an OSHA complaint within 90 days (if HR takes more than 90 days to resolve your internal complaint, you can no have no further recourse). If you manage to raise a complaint with OSHA, it is heard by a secret tribunal that has no subpoena power and routinely takes five years to rule on cases, and rules against whistleblowers 97% of the time.
Boeing whistleblowers who missed the 90-day cutoff have filled the South Carolina courts with last-ditch attempts to hold the company to account. When they lose these cases – as is routine, given Boeing's enormous legal muscle and AIR21's legal handcuffs – they are often ordered to pay Boeing's legal costs.
Tkacik cites Swampy's lawyer, Rob Turkewitz, who says Swampy was the only one of Boeing's whistleblowers who was "savvy, meticulous, and fast-moving enough to bring an AIR 21 case capable of jumping through all the hoops" to file an AIR21 case, which then took seven years. Turkewitz calls Boeing South Carolina "a criminal enterprise."
That's a conclusion that's hard to argue with. Take Boeing's excuse for not producing the documentation of its slapdash reinstallation of the Alaska Air door plug that fell off its plane in flight: the company says it's not criminally liable for failing to provide the paperwork, because it never documented the repair. Not documenting the repair is also a crime.
You might have heard that there's some accountability coming to the Boeing boardroom, with the ouster of CEO David Calhoun. Calhoun's likely successor is Patrick Shanahan, whom Tkacik describes as "the architect of the ethos that governed the 787 program" and whom her source called "a classic schoolyard bully."
If Shanahan's name rings a bell, it might be because he was almost Trump's Secretary of Defense, but that was derailed by the news that he had "emphatically defended" his 17 year old son after the boy nearly beat his mother to death with a baseball bat. Shanahan is presently CEO of Spirit Aerospace, who made the door-plug that fell out of the Alaska Airlines 737 Max.
Boeing is a company where senior managers only fail up and where whistleblowers are terrorized in and out of the workplace. One of Tkacik's sources noticed his car shimmying. The source, an ex-787 worker who'd been fired after raising safety complaints, had tried to bring an AIR21 complaint, but withdrew it out of fear of being bankrupted if he was ordered to pay Boeing's legal costs. When the whistleblower pulled over, he discovered that two of the lug-nuts had been removed from one of his wheels.
The whistleblower texted Tkcacik to say (not for the first time): "If anything happens, I'm not suicidal."
Boeing is a primary aerospace contractor to the US government. It's clear that its management – and investors – consider it too big to jail. It's also clear that they know it's too big to fail – after all, the company did a $43b stock buyback, then got billions in a publicly funded buyback.
Boeing is, effectively, a government agency that is run for the benefit of its investors. It performs its own safety inspections. It investigates its own criminal violations of safety rules. It loots its own coffers and then refills them at public expense.
Meanwhile, the company has filled our skies with at least 420 airplanes with defective, red-painted parts that were locked up in the MRSA cage, then snuck out and fitted to an airplane that you or someone you love could fly on the next time you take your family on vacation or fly somewhere for work.

New Rule: Whoa, Canada | Real Time with Bill Maher
And finally, New Rule. If we want to save our country, we should follow the advice good liberals have given for decades and learn from other countries.
Especially those beacons of progressivism like Canada, England, and Scandinavia, and I agree we should, as long as we're honest about the lessons we're learning. And as long as we're up to date on the current data. Such as, the unemployment rate in the US is 3.8 percent. And in Canada, it's 6.1. And of the 15 North American cities with the worst air pollution, 14 are in Canada.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not citing these stats because I have it out for Canada. I love Canada, and its people, and always have, but I hate zombie lies. Zombie lies. That's when things change but what people say about them doesn't. Yes, for decades, places like Vancouver, and Amsterdam, and Stockholm seemed idyllic, because everything was free and all the energy we needed was produced by riding a bike to your job at the windmill. Canada was where all the treasured goals of liberalism worked perfectly. It was like NPR come to life but with poutine.
Canada was the Statue of Liberty with a low-maintenance haircut and cross-country skis. A giant idealized blue state with single-payer health care, gun control, and abortion on polite demand. Canada was where every woke White college kid, wearing pajama pants outdoors who'd had it up to here with America's racist patriarchy, dreamt of living someday. I mean, besides Gaza.
Tumblr media
There's only one problem with thinking everything's better in Canada. It's not. Not anymore anyway. Last year, Canada added 1.3 million people, which is a lot in one year. The equivalent of the US adding 11 million migrants in one year. And now, they are experiencing a housing crisis even worse than ours. And we're sleeping in tents. The median price of a home here is 346 grand, in Canada, converted to US dollars, it's 487. If Barbie moved to Winnipeg, she wouldn't be able to afford her dream house and Ken would be working at Tim Hortons. And because of mortgage debt, Canada has the highest debt to GDP ratio of any G7 nation. I don't know what that means, but it sounds bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So does their vaunted health care system, which ranks dead last among high income countries in access to primary health care and ability to see a doctor in a day or two. And it's not for lack of spending. Of the 30 countries with universal coverage, Canada spends over 13 percent of its economy on it, which is a lot of money for free health care.
Tumblr media
Look, I'm not saying Canada still isn't a great country. It is, but those aren't paradise numbers. If Canada was an apartment, the lead feature might be "America adjacent." And if America was a rental car, Canada would be "America or similar."
And again, honestly, Canada, I'm not saying any of this 'cause I enjoy it. I don't, 'cause I've always enjoyed you. But I need to cite you as a cautionary tale to help my country. And the moral of that tale is, "Yes, you can move too far left." And when you do, you wind up pushing the people in the middle to the right. At its worst, Canada is what American voters think happens when there's no one putting a check on extreme wokeness.
Like the saga of Canadian shop teacher, Kayla Lemieux, whose pronouns are she/her and those. Kayla is now back to being a guy named Kerry, but two years ago when "they" showed up to teach children, the progressive high school "they" taught at said that they-- They, the school, not the person. Really? You couldn't have found another word? We were using that one. Anyway, okay. They were committed to a safe environment for gender expression. Safe for who? What about the children? What about the equipment in that shop class?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know, there was once a weirdo D-list movie producer in the '60s named Russ Meyer who made low-budget B movies like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! And Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Always featuring women who look like this. His movies played in porn houses and were featured in Hustler and Playboy. Okay, fine, but who says, "No, when it comes to huge, ridiculous tits, let's save that for the kids."
And this is why people vote for Trump. They say in politics, liberals are the gas pedal and conservatives are the brakes, and I'm generally with the gas pedal, but not if we're driving off a cliff.
Tumblr media
On the trans issue, America is no ands, ifs, or buts about it, absolutely alone in the world now. An outlier country. Last month, England's National Health Service announced that there's "not enough evidence to support the safety or clinical effectiveness" of puberty blockers for third graders, and that they were going to stop fumbling around with children's privates, because that's Prince Andrew's job.
Tumblr media
So too with all the other good place countries in direct opposition to America's choice to affirm children's wishes on switching gender, no matter the age or psychiatric history. The Far Left, which always like to use, "Well, Europe does it." Yeah, no, that doesn't work on this one anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or on immigration. Sweden opened its borders to over a million and a half immigrants since 2010. And now 20 percent of its citizens are foreign-born and its education system is tanking, and it has Europe's highest rate of gangland killings. And one result is that the far-right parties are in the government now there for the first time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To which liberals say, "Blaming immigrants for the rising crime rate is racist." Yeah, but is it true? Of course, it's true. It's not a coincidence. The quality of life went down after the Somali gangs started a drug turf war using hand grenades.
Tumblr media
Calling it "racist" doesn't solve the problem. It hands future elections to someone who will solve the problem, and who, I promise, you're not going to like.
Tumblr media
==
For the record, I've said literally all of this, including making the comparison of flying off a cliff if you rely entirely on the gas pedal. Just saying.
When Trump takes office again, and he will, people will act stunned and ask, "how could this have ever happened?"

There was nothing more you distrusted than the weather. Too many times had they reported that Winnipeg would receive record-level snowfalls, only for the city to receive nothing more than a dusting of snow. They had made the same reports as you and Adam had slipped into bed for the night with nothing more than a mere glimpse out the window to see that not a single flake of snow took to the sky. You had gone to sleep sure that come morning nothing would have changed. That you would take to the busy city streets for your morning commute, contemplate grabbing a morning coffee, and do your best to enjoy your work day, but you were wrong.
Come morning, you woke up to your alarm to an empty bed - the space where Adam slept beside you was still warm. Your hand slid over the space slowly, before reaching out for your robe. Your puppy, Banks, was quick to fall into stride beside you, he was eager to go out for his morning pee, but when he reached the door, he made no effort to go outside.
The wind was cold as it came in the door that could only open so wide. Stepping to the side, you peered out the sidelight window to the right of the door, your eyes drawing wide at just how much snow had piled up against the side of the house. You can see snow flying back as someone shovels just out of sight and snow continued to flutter down from the skies. You cast a sympathetic glance down at Banks as you dropped down on one knee at his side. You scratched along his collar and shivered as the front door was forced open large enough for Adam to sneak back inside. The chill of the wind struck you before you could be met by Adam’s warm smile.
“He doesn’t want to go out, how bad is it?” You asked him slowly.
“Cleared the sidewalk, but the roads aren’t drivable and they postponed the game today. The team wasn’t able to fly in with the storm,” Adam explained slowly, his gloved hands reaching down to pick up Banks with ease. “I’ll take him out, but you, you need to call into work and tell them you’re not going to make it out of the driveway.”
The phone call was quick, your boss understanding as he was struggling to get his own car out of the driveway. By the time you were done on the phone, Adam was carrying Banks - whose feet were caked with snow - back inside the house, you shared together. Even Adam’s wool jacket had become covered in snow and you weren’t quite sure if was from the blowing snow, or if Banks had given him a hard time and had knocked him into the snow as he played.
You met him with a towel wiping the snow from his feet before helping Adam with his coat and hanging it up over the heater. Then you stood, awkwardly at the door, watching out the window as the snow continued to fall. Of all your life living in Winnipeg, you had never had a snow day. What did someone even do on a slow day?
Clutching your robe tight to your form, you looked up at Adam - you never failed to smile at just how much taller he was than you - and he quickly came to mirror your smile. “What are you so happy about?” You asked him slowly. “You’re going to be stuck with me all day.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” Adam smiled, his large hands taking to your waist, stroking down the length of your curves slowly. His hands squeezed your hips, and that was there you thought they would settle, until his grasp dripped down to the back of your thighs, hoisting your up into his arms. Letting out a squeal, you wrapped around him effortlessly, and let him carry you through your home and back toward the bedroom.
“Adam!” You squealed, your face tucking into the crook of his neck, “what are we-”
“When is the last time you and I spent the day in bed?” he near growled into your ear and you could practically feel the seduction of his words course through your body and straight through to your core.
During the season, it seemed that you spent nights alone more often than not and the idea of having him all to yourself for even just a day was more than exciting. “Not for a very long time,” you hummed against the flesh of his neck as your smile spread wider across your face, “so you’re talking about sleeping in?”
Your playful, joking tone left Adam laughing as you came to the bedroom. He held you up over the bed, the only light in the room coming through a crack in the curtains and highlighting the sinful look in his eyes. “Sleeping? Hm,” he hummed, “I think we could have a little time for that, between rounds one and two…”
“Round one and two?” You tilted your head to the side curiously, your teeth coming down to bite on your lower lip.
“Yeah, comes between lunch, round three and round four,” Adam hummed his hands grasping your silken robe into his fists. The robe loosened around your frame, falling away from your breast and soon your shoulders as he lowered you down to the bed gently - it was a long drop when he held you up in your arms. The robe slipped down to the bed leaving you in what you had slept in during the night, a sweatshirt, a pair of simple cotton panties and tube socks. It was far from sexy - at least in your eyes - but Adam, he loved you in everything, and in nothing.
“You planned an entire itinerary?” you teased him.
“Had to think about something while freezing my ass off out there, what better than thinking about the best way to stay warm?”
Adam didn’t waste his time undressing you. Not when you hadn’t let the lingering feeling of sleep completely fade, and not when his cold hands coaxed titalized bumps all over your flesh. “Then we should get under the covers,” you smirked, crawling up the bed, just out of his reach. Adam crawled up onto the bed as you pulled the thick blanket up to your chin. You hid your smile behind the quilted blanket as Adam pulled his crewneck sweater up and over his head, discarding it on the floor before joining you under the covers. His touch was quick to find you again, drawing you in close and warming you with the heat of his body. The cold melted away from your flesh, and warmth puddled in your panties.
“Adam,” you gasped out, as his fingertips grazed over the delicate flesh just above the waist of your panties. His touch moved upwards. Up over the plain of your stomach, stopping just below the swell of your breasts. His touch was feather-light, leaving you desperate for more. You raised a leg up, wrapping it around his thigh carefully, using the leverage it gave you to draw him in closer. Eager hands found the strength of his shoulders, your fingers digging in deep as you enjoyed the friction of his athletic frame between your thighs.
His kiss consumed you, just as it always had. Adam’s touch and taste were intoxicating, coaxing a moan up your throat and a shudder up the length of your spine as you rolled your hips up and over the crotch of his flannel pants. They were tenting against his growing arousal. His lips drew back, leaving you near whimpering, to whisper out, “we’ll take it easy to start,” his breath was hot as it washed over your cheeks. His lips kissed along your jaw slowly as his hands slipped down from your breast and over your thin cotton panties.
Your hands reached down, your thumbs hooking on the sides of your panties but he shook his head slowly. “Leave them on,” he muttered, his fingers brushing over your clothed clit and down between your thighs. A thick finger hooked the crotch of your panties, and you could hear Adam groan against your neck at just how wet you were. He teased your core with the tip of a single fingertip, circling over your slick entrance before dipping the single digit inside.
You let out a gasp, your head leaning back into the pillows as the bed shifted. With one finger deep in your cunt, he used the other to shift the blanket out of the way all the while it stayed draped over both of your frames to keep you warm. It was positioned over you that he eased the waist of his pants down low on his hips - just enough to draw out his stiff cock. He dragged it along your cunt, not once but twice, before he eased it inside you inch by inch. You wound around him with ease. An arm draped across the back of his shoulders, the other reached up so that your fingers were lost in his thick hair. Adam fucked you slowly, his face resting in your hair, relishing in the scent that was uniquely you as he eased himself in balls deep. You could feel the graze of his flannel pants against your legs. And your sweater bunched up around your middle almost uncomfortably, but you were warm, sweating now even as the heat of the pleasure only he could bring to you began to pulse through your body. It coaxed soft moans from your mouth, your eyes consumed by the solace of darkness as they shut.
Your name was a whisper in your own ear as Adam released. His mouth was left agape and lips dragging over your neck slowly, each breath of his left desperate as he came down from his own high of pleasure. He eased out of you slowly, his finger returning to your panties to move them back into place - to collect the cum that would inevitably spill from you - before fixing his pants back around his hips. Adam didn’t go far, not even getting up to clean himself up. That could be done later. Instead, his arms held you close, his face nuzzling into your soft hair as his eyes fell shut. It was in his arms that the two of you napped, and afterwards? Round Two.

East Manitoba: Winnipeg
After leaving Kenora and driving into Manitoba, the forest gives way to the Prairies and quickly there's no tree in sight! The famous big skies were blurred though from yet more smoke so not getting the pretty views but rather feeling like the sky was leaning down... 🤔
After checking in at the AirBnB, I went over to Harman's parents' house where I had stayed in 2017 when I was here for a canoeing trip & of which I have great memories so it was fun to go back & meet his parents again! The house was decorated for the upcoming wedding celebration and full of relatives that had come in from all over, and it was great to see Harman and meet his wife Ankita and their little boy Mir... they were married 3 years ago during covid but couldn't celebrate it with friends & family so now it was the occasion to have everyone together. When I received the invite, I hadn't made any plans yet for the roadtrip so this was a perfect event to plan my trip around!
As anyone knows who's been to one, Indian get-togethers tend to be quite chaotic 😁, so had fun conversations over delicious (& not too spicy) appetizers but darted home at 11pm before dinner was served 😅
Next morning, I did the first car wash since the trip started so now the car looked slightly less dirty (although it will need a power wash to remove all dead bugs 🥴), and then I went downtown to the Forks going back to what I loved most when I was here previously; lunch at the Commons Market and then a visit to the Human Rights Museum, going progressively from dark to light to its Tower of Hope. I had stayed here for 5 hours last time, learning a tremendous amount about Canadian human rights issues that as a newcomer to the country I was not aware of, so wanted to revisit now I've lived here longer and became a Canadian citizen. Every nation has skeletons in the closet they prefer not to talk about, but it's important to be aware of all history, the good and the bad, to truly appreciate the place you call home and be more socially aware of how governments take care of its people. I would dare other countries to follow suit with a similar place of human rights education & reflection!
On the way, I ran into two familiar faces; my old Sumach street in Toronto and Mahatma Ghandi, who I just read a book about 😃
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had been instructed to show up early for the wedding ceremony, so I donned the dress that I had sent in advance to Harman's mum to keep it clean from camping smoke and dirt 😆 and made my way to the pretty gardens of The Gates on Roblin by 4.30pm.
As for a traditional Indian wedding, we danced in the courtyard while the groom made his entrance (with their little son as the best man 😍) and then attended a lovely ceremony followed by a reception, delicious dinner and fun dance party. I got no pics apart from the video-booth below as I was too busy enjoying and meeting interesting people while shaking my best Indian moves 🤣 on the dance floor... it was a really fun night! 🤗

13.05. 21:03 | Ilo Pisara vs NYMAN HOKKEY 7 - 1
Oh, what a glorious day for Ilo Pisara! We didn't just win; we put on a clinic with a 7-1 thrashing of NYMAN HOKKEY. It's like comparing a majestic eagle soaring through the skies to... well, whatever tries to fly but can only manage to fall out of trees. Teppo Winnipeg was more like Teppo "Win-a-Peg" tonight – dishing out assists as if they were free samples at a grocery store. With two assists and his skates practically setting the ice on fire, he showed us that defensemen could indeed dream big offensive dreams. Yuri Tarde? More like Yuri "On-Time" because he delivered exactly when we needed him! Scoring twice and assisting three times is no small feat unless you're playing against toddlers—and even then, it's impressive! And Jani Saari—oh boy—scoring five goals in one game? That’s not just being in beast mode; that’s redefining it. If this hockey thing doesn’t work out for him (which clearly isn’t an issue), there might be a career in demolition because he absolutely wrecked the opposition. After some recent stumbles where our performance was as inspiring as watching paint dry, this victory is sweeter than finding forgotten chocolate in your pocket. Let's keep this momentum going and turn those previous missteps into stepping stones towards greatness—or at least above-average-ness.

Navigating the Peg: Your Guide to Winnipeg Car Rentals
Winnipeg, affectionately known as the "Peg," is a vibrant city brimming with cultural charm, historical landmarks, and natural wonders. Whether you're here for a weekend getaway exploring the Forks and Assiniboine Park, a business trip navigating the Exchange District, or an adventurous road trip through Manitoba's stunning landscapes, renting a car can unlock a world of possibilities.
But with so many options available, choosing the right Winnipeg car rental can feel overwhelming. Fear not, fellow traveler! This comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge and insider tips to navigate the world of Winnipeg car rentals like a pro.
Picking Your Perfect Ride:
First things first, consider your needs and budget. Solo explorers might find a compact car like a Hyundai Accent or Toyota Corolla ideal, while families or groups might opt for a spacious SUV like a Ford Escape or Kia Telluride. If you're planning a winter adventure, ensure the car has winter tires and all-wheel drive for added safety. Eco-conscious travelers can explore fuel-efficient options like a Toyota Prius or Nissan Leaf.
Location, Location, Location:
Airport rentals offer convenience, but can be slightly more expensive. Downtown locations are perfect for city exploration, while neighborhood rentals might offer better deals and flexibility. Consider your arrival and departure points when choosing a location.
Price Comparison is Key:
Don't settle for the first quote you see! Compare prices on car rental aggregator websites like Kayak and Priceline, and directly on rental company websites like Hertz, Budget, and Enterprise. Look for special deals, coupons, and AAA discounts. Remember, the cheapest option isn't always the best – factor in insurance, additional fees, and customer reviews before making your decision.
Fuel & Insurance:
Most rentals are offered on a full-to-full basis. Fill up the tank before returning to avoid hefty charges. Insurance is crucial. Consider your existing coverage and compare the rental company's options before adding additional insurance.
The Essential Extras:
Depending on your trip, consider adding extras like GPS navigation, child seats, or ski racks. These can be expensive at the counter, so pre-book online if needed.
Beyond the Big Brands:
While major companies offer reliable service, consider local Winnipeg car rentals like U-Drive or Routes for potentially better deals and personalized service.
Insider Tips:
Book in advance: Especially during peak season, booking early guarantees car availability and better rates.
Check mileage: Unlimited mileage is ideal for road trips, while limited mileage might be more budget-friendly for city stays.
Read the fine print: Understand insurance coverage, cancellation policies, and additional fees before booking.
Inspect the car thoroughly: Make sure there's no damage and note any existing scratches or dents before driving off.
Be flexible: If your plans change, contact the rental company as soon as possible to avoid late fees or penalties.
Winnipeg's Hidden Gems:
With your rental car, explore beyond the usual tourist spots. Drive to GIMli Beach for a dip in Lake Winnipeg, visit the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, or embark on a scenic drive through the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
Renting a car in Winnipeg opens doors to a world of adventure and exploration. By following these tips and doing your research, you can navigate the rental process smoothly and hit the road with confidence, ready to discover the magic of the Peg.

To Ontario and back
Week 2
We left Edmonton mid morning and drove east on Hwy 16. It took us through some nice farm country for 10-20km. We drove through Elk Island National Park where we saw a nice herd of plains buffalo.  After driving through the park, the landscape changed to gently rolling hills with smaller farms and strips of wooded areas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We drove into Vegreville to check out the worlds largest Ukrainian Easter Egg.  There is much tradition and history on the way they paint and decorate easter eggs. The Elks Lodge created a very nice park and picnic area on the edge of town.
Driving east from there we drove through the rolling hills, a lot of it covered in bush and shrubbery with the occasional grain farms, cattle ranches and small lakes in between.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We drove into the Battlefords. First we checked out South Battleford, looking for the tourist info centre, but it was closed. North Battleford is located on a ridge above the south Saskatchewan River. It looks like a service centre for the farming community of the area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we drove east along long stretches of straight and flat roads towards Saskatoon.  Most of the harvesting was already done.  The farms are massive in size as far as the eye can see.  Neighbours here are 10-20 km apart, no homeless people here …..
We arrived in Saskatoon and checked out the downtown area. We were looking for a campground close to downtown but were unable to find it, as the GPS was confused and kept sending us around in circles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We did settle in an RV park on the edge of town where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset along with dinner
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We left Saskatoon early driving east on Hwy 16 and stopped in Colonsay to have a short visit with our friends Brian and Angelica.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They moved here years ago from Calgary to retire and enjoy the country living. They have a lovely home and are involved in the community.  We said our goodbyes after our surprise visit and drove on east.
This prairie land is endless, more land straight stretches of road with a slight curve every few miles.
Tumblr media
We drove by Bid Quill Lake, a large body of water in the middle of the prairies.
We stopped in Yorkton to fill up with gas and beer and decided to travel on to Winnipeg.  It made for a long day of driving, but we were looking forward to have an extra day there.  We arrived at brother Jim’s place at 9, had a short visit before going to bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning we made our way into downtown Winnipeg to get our windshield fixed as we picked up a rock chip. We also made it to the Fort on the Red River where we had a nice lunch, found a lovely bakery and walked through the park and across the bridge to St. Bonaface.
It was raining when we left in the morning and we had grey skies all the way to Kenora.  We were advised to drive from Winnipeg to ThunderBay in one stretch, as there was not a lot to see in between, it was an 8 hour drive. We drove though more prairie farms, long flat and straight stretches of Hwy 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we got closer to Kenora there were fewer farms and more bush along the road.
After Kenora the landscape changed as we came to the Canadian Shield. Rocky out crops dot the landscape here. Lots of bush and shrubbery with the odd cattle ranch, it’s no longer flat lands.
The road took us through low hills and rocky terrain as we arrive at Lakes of the Woods of Ontario.  This is a beautiful area with all the fall colours of gold and red and with the evergreens amongst them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every few kilometres we come upon small lakes along the side of the road.  There are over a 1000 lakes in this area, many not named.  Mostly small lakes but also some big ones such as Eagle Lake and Buttler Lake and Wabigoon Lake by Dryden. For the following 250KM there were only small lakes along the road, most of them not shown on our maps and the roads were in good shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also encountered several road construction projects. They were amazing as it showed the difficulties of building highways through this uneven rocky terrain. They cut deep and wide gorges in the granite to straighten out the roads. All that granite gets crushed and is used as bedding for the roads.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stopped at Kakabeka Falls for a walk around the falls. Big volume of water going over these falls so it was very noisy
Tumblr media
We got into ThunderBay late afternoon and drove to a campsite on the waterfront Linda found online. The GPS took us through town and then out of town towards Lake Superior. We drove alongside of some large grain elevators onto a dirt road into an area with large earth moving equipment. The GPS said that we arrived at our destination. WTF we were at the edge of a big dump. So we turned around and drove back to ThunderBay and towards Kakabeka Falls where we spotted a campground on the way.
We managed to set up camp before dark, made dinner and had a short walk around the campground.
