Just For Her
Harry didn’t have to think about the folds anymore, didn’t have to question if the crimson paper flower would look right when he finished. He’d been doing it for twenty-three years now.
As he finished the last one, placing it in the vase with the other twenty-two–a mix of white, black, and crimson–he leaned back in his chair.
He rubbed his eyes, mind boggled that it had been so long already. He woke to nightmares with such frequency that he could believe the battle had ended yesterday.
With a flick, the vase of origami flowers shrunk down to fit into the little ring box and then he went to join Ginny in bed.
~~~
He rose before the sun, dressing quietly so as to not wake Ginny before leaving the house and apparating away.
The crunch of gravel under his feet was the only sound in the cemetery when he landed. With a glance around to ensure no one else was around he walked through the decorative iron gates, his feet carrying him to the gravesite without thought.
Contrary to what he’d always assumed, the Malfoys didn’t have a cemetery full of ornate mausoleums with white peacocks for guards. Rather tremendously embellished headstones marked their ancestor's resting places.
Harry stopped in front of the one that shone like it’d been placed that morning. Malfoy always made sure his mother’s stone was the most pristine. Harry removed the box from his pocket, enlarged the flowers once more, and placed them on the base.
He’d met with Narcissa the year following the war and found her folding the flowers in an attempt to fight off the fear that still lingered for her son. She’d taught him how to make something from nothing.
Secretly, he’d been folding them ever since, just for her.
(This was written for the HPFC drabble challenge. The prompt was "a breakup.")
Remus ran a tired hand over his face. “I’ll have my stuff out of here tonight.”
“Fine. I don’t care,” Dora said, not looking at him. He reached out to touch her shoulder and she jerked away. “Don’t make this harder, Remus. Just go.”
Remus looked around helplessly, hating to leave her like this even if he knew she was right. “I’m sorry.”
She laughed mirthlessly. “Is that supposed to make it better?”
“I don’t know what else you want me to say,” Remus said, his composure crumbling.
“There’s nothing to say. You don’t love me. Give him my best.”
Fic Stat Game
Rules: Give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the least words.
Thank you for the tag, @bluestringpudding <3
Most hits: When the Moon Rises to Meet the Stars which was a) my first fic I ever posted to AO3, and b) is a (somehow) 6 chapter OT4 smut fic. And if we ignore the setting-I-used-for-convenience-without-any-critical-thought-whatsoever (oops) it's... well, I have grown a lot as a writer and person since I wrote it lol. And considering this was a writing exercise to see if I could write smut, having never done it before... I'm okay with that. It is also the fic with the second most kudos. (Remus/Sirius/James/Lily, very VERY E/18+ - mind the tags.)
Third most comments: Lost Dogs MY BABY. This was a 12 Drabbles of Christmas fic written for a challenge on HPFC, and it happened to line up neatly with the number of Christmases Remus spent alone, so... there it is lmao. It is also, importantly, one of the two prequels to LTL. (Rated M, CW for drug addiction and Tolstoy-flavored depression... mind the tags, she is a rough one.)
Fourth most bookmarks: The Great Biscuit Calamity of 1978, and Other Such Disasters was ALSO written for HPFC, though more as a gift to the folks on the server as a whole. It's... so silly. Unsure if my fave part is the symbolic cannibalism or the argument about gingerbread gender. (It's rated T lol.)
Fifth most words: Ouroboros my beloved!!! Oh man I love this fic so much. This is the only time I can genuinely say that I cracked my heart open like an egg and wrote a whole fic like that. (12k+ words, Rated T, CW for terminal illness/on screen decline and death, proceed with caution if you have difficult relationships with your parents and especially your father.)
Least words: If (Titan V) at 204 words. This was the first fic (drabble, really) that I wrote in my Satellites series, and bonus points to anyone who understands what I was going for with the moon names for secondary titles. But basically, this was getting into Remus' head during the moment that he turned his wand on Peter in the Shack. (Rated T.)
Anyway, that was neat! Tagging @allalrightagain @mkaugust @broomsticks @femme--de--lettres for some no-pressure fun. :)
Writing updates:
So hey I joined the fucking title exchange challenge on the HPFC again for February even though the January one just about killed me to write.
Actual writing stuff that actually got done today: ha. ha ha. Iiiiiii stared at some blank documents for a while. Stared at my prompts for a Valentine’s drabble collection challenge for a while. Rephrased a couple things in that one thing I’ve had sitting around partially written since...... April? May?? (idek, it was written during the first wave of Starbright installments and I have barely managed to work on it in the 8-9 months since then. T_T )
so yep, lotta blank staring, not much progress on the things.
I have more real-life stress going on right now which means I’ll either get more things written because that’s one of the ways I deal with my stress, or I will get less things written because I’m too stressed out. There is no way to tell which one it will be, though, so.... fun times ahead. -,..,-
This was written for the HPFC drabble challenge with the prompt "Secret Hobbies." Thank you for choosing this as the first place piece ❤️❤️
The boys trooped back into the house, muddy and boisterous. Ginny watched surreptitiously from her perch on the stairs. They didn’t pay any attention to her as they made their way to the lav to clean up.
Ginny nimbly hopped down and slipped outside. Molly was busy elsewhere; she wouldn’t notice Ginny’s absence for a good while. She found her way to the broom shed and went in. The brooms were all ajumble, lying higgledy-piggledy on the floor. Ginny tutted to herself. It wasn’t enough that her older brothers got their own brooms, they didn’t even care enough to put them back neatly.
She loved her brothers, she did, but being the youngest and the only girl was hard sometimes.
They never let her play Quidditch with them.
But she would show them.
She took the broom that was on top of the pile. Charlie’s, by the look of it.
Taking it outside, she mounted and kicked off the ground; the familiar thrill of the flight flowing through her. She took a lap around the back of the Burrow property before taking the ball she brought with her out of her pocket and throwing it into the distance.
She sped up, lying almost flat on the broom and caught it before it fell. A satisfied grin spread over her face. “And Weasley makes the catch,” she whispered to herself as she tossed the ball again.
