"Pais e filhos" (Soshite chichi ni naru) - mubi.

Tiny Review: A Man 2022. Investigative procedural with a theme of identity.
Tumblr media
I like the 1st act, where the mystery is set up in a heartwarming manner. The procedural 2nd act is good too. But the last act kinda peters out. I think it’s because there isn’t really any shocking or twist reveal.
That ending scene left me wondering what happened though. And it took me a while to puzzle out what happened: Akira finally understood the appeal of switching identities.

A Man (Japanese: ある男, "Aru otoko") is a 2022 Japanese psychological thriller film directed by Kei Ishikawa, based on a novel with the same name by Keiichiro Hirano. It stars Sakura Andô, Satoshi Tsumabuki, and Yôko Maki.

Poison Berry in My Brain

Poison Berry in My Brain    [trailer]
A 30 years old novelist, has a crush on Saotome, who is only in his twenties. This causes a heated discussion between the 5 personas controlling her brain every time she is around Saotome.
Very original setting, that can best be decribed as a live-action version of Inside Out. But to be clear, it is based on a manga that was written years before the animated movie.
It is very fast and funny, at least for about an hour or so. But there isn't enough story for two full hours.
Ending aside, I really wish the romantic story were a bit more ... sophisticated. In no way did Ichiko behave like a 30-year old woman, and it's unclear what she saw in Saotome.

The Grudge (2004) Review
“The curse is about to claim another victim.”
Synopsis: An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.

Calamity Brains:
This viewing of the Grudge was my first time revisiting the movie since it came out in 2004. I came away fairly pleased; the tense atmosphere I’d remembered held up well, and though the spirit effects were hit or miss, a decent amount of them were hit. Although I didn’t feel like the movie quite did justice to Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s talents, I was happy enough with it that I won’t wait fifteen years to rewatch it again.
Unlike most of the American remakes of successful Japanese horror movies, The Grudge remake is still set in Japan. Most of the cast is Japanese, including the same actors who played the spirit family in the original (Takako Fuji, Yuya Ozeki, Yôko Maki). This is a bit peculiar, but definitely welcomed; the story works best where it was originally set. The stranger-in-a-strange-land feelings of the main character also help keep the tension levels high throughout.
I was particularly pleased that I still found The Grudge to be creepy. It’s a rare thing when movies actually get me on edge, and while this flick didn’t do so throughout, I appreciated that it could creep me out at all.

Rating: 9/10 The most anticipated film for me for 2017. As a film writer, I look out for the quality of script and production. After watching the film 7 times in Tokyo, I can say the film's production was world-class. Cinematography, film editing, sound design, sound editing, production set design, costume design, hair and makeup, music are other aspects to die for. Miike had done an excellent directing job on the cast, especially its leading role, Manji (Takuya Kimura). Miike had successfully brought the best out of Kimura, shedding his KimuTaku's branding. In the film, Kimura portrayed Manji through and through. I almost forgot I was watching an idol actor who used to characterize squeaky-clean images in TV dramas. The role was so deep that you believed it was Manji's story and his immortal life that you really care about. Of course, the film will not be complete without the fine acting skills from co-stars. Hana Sugisaki, Sota Fukushi and Erika Toda had put on their ultimate to-die-for performance. The fighting scenes were artistically choreographed. The sound of swords clanging made your heart beat in sync with its rhythm. The script was well paced. There were moments of thrilling fights and there were moments of quietness. Lighting played a key role here in telling the story effectively. The cinematography told another story on its own. Every frame was a postcard. In my opinion, it was a successful adaption from the manga. What a great way to celebrate Miike's 100th film.

The Blood of Wolves
Tumblr media
The Blood of Wolves    [trailer]
A Hiroshima Police detective and his partner are investigating the disappearance of a company's employees amidst an escalating yakuza turf war in 1988.
Stylish homage to classic yakuza movies. Thankfully, not as brutal throughout as the opening scene indicates.
By now I'm not as interested anymore in films about the blurring lines between organised crime and cops. But the convoluted plot makes it easy to stay invested.
The macho posturing and shouting in some scenes, when members of different gangs meet, made me laugh. I presume it was intended to be that way.
Kôji Yakusho gives a very memorable performance.

Like Father, Like Son/Soshite chichi ni naru (2013)
Tumblr media
✭✭✭✩✩
Info: 0 and over | 2h 1min | Director: Hirokazu Koreeda Genre: Drama http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2331143/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Would you choose your natural son, or the son you believed was yours after spending 6 years together? Kore-eda Hirokazu, the globally acclaimed director of “Nobody Knows”, “Still Walking” and “I Wish”, returns to the big screen with another family - a family thrown into torment after a phone call from the hospital where the son was born… Ryota has earned everything he has by his hard work, and believes nothing can stop him from pursuing his perfect life as a winner. Then one day, he and his wife, Midori, get an unexpected phone call from the hospital. Their 6-year-old son, Keita, is not ‘their’ son - the hospital gave them the wrong baby. Ryota is forced to make a life-changing decision, to choose between 'nature’ and 'nurture.’ Seeing Midori’s devotion to Keita even after learning his origin, and communicating with the rough yet caring family that has raised his natural son for the last six years, Ryota also starts to question himself: has he really been a 'father’ all these years….
Main Roles: Masaharu Fukuyama – Ryota Nonomiya Machiko Ono – Midori Nonomiya Yôko Maki – Yukari Saiki Lily Franky – Yudai Saiki (as Lily Frankie)
Review: The story itself is nothing new to be honest. The concept of persons being swapped in movies has been used in a number of previous films and probably will be used in future ones as well.
But what this movie does differently, is the way it tells the story. It’s very slow and it’s simple in a way if you compare it to other movies with a similar theme. To me, it’s a good thing that it doesn’t need too dramatic events or anything along those lines to make the movie interesting. It is already interesting enough as it is.
The aesthetics of this movie were another part that stood out to me. Almost every scene is so beautifully composed that it could be a painting. Like I feel that there was a lot of thought put into the various scenes.
But I do have to say that there are some plot twists, which are kinda shocking.
Now the one most important question is: should you swap your not-biological-child with your biological-child just because you share the same genes? Or are you too attached to it and don’t care for bloodlines? Which criteria makes this small human YOUR child?
